Urban surfaces play a crucial role in shaping the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect by absorbing and retaining significant solar radiation. This paper explores the potential of high-resolution satellite imagery as an alternative method for characterizing urban surfaces to support UHI mitigation strategies in urban redevelopment plans. We utilized Landsat images spanning the past 40 years to analyze trends in Land Surface Temperature (LST). Additionally, WorldView-3 (WV3) imagery was acquired for surface characterization, and the results were compared with ground truth measurements using the ASD FieldSpec 4 spectroradiometer. Our findings revealed a strong correlation between satellite-derived surface reflectance and ground truth measurements across various urban surfaces, with Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values ranging from 0.01 to 0.14. Optimal characterization was observed for surfaces such as bituminous membranes and parking with cobblestones (RMSE < 0.03), although higher RMSE values were noted for tiled roofs, likely due to aging effects. Regarding surface albedo, the differences between satellite-derived data and ground measurements consistently remained below 12% for all surfaces, with the lowest values observed in high heat-absorbing surfaces like bituminous membranes. Despite challenges on certain surfaces, our study highlights the reliability of satellite-derived data for urban surface characterization, thus providing valuable support for UHI mitigation efforts. With the development of urban built-up areas, accurately extracting the urban built-up area and spatiotemporal pattern evolution trends could be valuable for understanding urban sprawl and human activities. Considering the coarse spatial resolution of nighttime light (NTL) data and the inaccurate regional boundary reflection on point of interest (POI) data, land surface temperature (LST) data were introduced. A composite index method (LJ–POI–LST) was proposed based on the positive relationship for extracting the boundary and reflecting the spatial-temporal evolution of urban built-up areas involving the NTL, POIs, and LST data from 1993 to 2018 in this paper. This paper yielded the following results: (1) There was a spatial-temporal pattern evolution from north-east to south-west with a primary quadrant orientation of IV, V, and VI in the Hefei urban area from 1993–2018. The medium-speed expansion rate, with an average value of 14.3 km2/a, was much faster than the population growth rate. The elasticity expansion coefficient of urbanization of 1.93 indicated the incongruous growth rate between the urban area and population, leading to an incoordinate and unreasonable development trend in Hefei City. (2) The detailed extraction accuracy for urban and rural junctions, urban forest parks, and other error-prone areas was improved, and the landscape connectivity and fragmentation were optimized according to the LJ–POI–LST composite index based on a high-resolution remote sensing validation image in the internal spatial structure. (3) Compared to the conventional NTL data and the LJ–POI index, the LJ–POI–LST composite index method displayed an extraction accuracy greater than 85%, with a similar statistical and landscape pattern index result. This paper provides a suitable method for the positive relationship among these LST, NTL, and POI data for accurately extracting the boundary and reflecting the spatial-temporal evolution of urban built-up areas by the fusion data. The operational Simplified Surface Energy Balance (SSEBop) model has been utilized to generate gridded evapotranspiration data from Landsat images. These estimates are primarily driven by two sources of information: reference evapotranspiration and Landsat land surface temperature (LST) values. Hence, SSEBop is limited by the availability of Landsat data. Here, in this proof-of-concept paper, we utilize the Continuous Change Detection and Classification (CCDC) algorithm to generate synthetic Landsat data, which are then used as input for SSEBop to generate evapotranspiration estimates for six target areas in the continental United States, representing forests, shrublands, and irrigated agriculture. These synthetic land cover data are then used to generate the LST data required for SSEBop evapotranspiration estimates. The synthetic LST, evaporative fractions, and evapotranspiration data from CCDC closely mirror the phenological cycles in the observed Landsat data. Across the six sites, the median correlation in seasonal LST was 0.79, and the median correlation in seasonal evapotranspiration was 0.8. The median root mean squared error (RMSE) values were 2.82 °C for LST and 0.50 mm/day for actual evapotranspiration. CCDC predictions typically underestimate the average evapotranspiration by less than 1 mm/day. The average performance of the CCDC evaporative fractions, and corresponding evapotranspiration estimates, were much better than the initial LST estimates and, therefore, promising. Future work could include bias correction to improve CCDC's ability to accurately reproduce synthetic Landsat data during the summer, allowing for more accurate evapotranspiration estimates, and determining the ability of SSEBop to predict regional evapotranspiration at seasonal timescales based on projected land cover change from CCDC. Research on the temporal and spatial changes of the urban heat island effect can help us better understand how urbanization, climate change, and the environment are interconnected. This study uses a spatiotemporal analysis method that couples the Emerging Hot Spot Analysis (EHSA) technique with the Mann–Kendall technique. The method is applied to determine the intensity of the heat island effect in humid subtropical climates over time and space. The data used in this research include thermal bands, red band (RED) and near-infrared band (NIR), and Landsat 7 and 8 satellites, which were selected from 2000 to 2022 for the city of Sari, an Iranian city on the Caspian Sea. Pre-processed spectral bands from the 'Google Earth Engine' database were used to estimate the land surface temperature. The land surface temperature difference between the urban environment and the outer buffer (1500 m) was modeled and simulated. The results of this paper show the accuracy and novelty of using Emerging Hotspot Analysis to evaluate the effect of vegetation cover on the urban heat island intensity. Based on the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), the city's land surface temperature increased by approximately 0.30 °C between 2011 and 2022 compared to 2001 to 2010. However, the intensity of the urban heat island decreased during the study period, with r = −0.42, so an average −0.031 °C/decade decrease has been experienced. The methodology can be transferred to other cities to evaluate the role of urban green spaces in reducing heat stress and to estimate the heat budget based on historical observations. The air temperature changes in the Palu MW7.5 earthquake in Indonesia on 28 September 2018 were analyzed, based on the additive tectonic stress caused by celestial tidal-generating forces (ATSCTF) and air temperature data from the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). This paper explored the variation characteristics of three-dimensional stratified of air temperature caused by seismic activity and the coupling relationship between air temperature changes and the tidal force. The background information for air temperature calculation was obtained from the tidal force changes, and the air temperature increment method was used to study the temperature evolution process of different periods in the study area. The results found that the tidal force acting on the critical state earthquake faults may be an important external factor inducing earthquakes, and there was indeed a significant air temperature increase anomaly during the Palu MW7.5 earthquake. The paper also summarized the abnormal characteristics of air temperature caused by seismic activity: the air temperature closer to the land's surface has greater anomaly amplitude and a wider anomaly area than that of the upper air. Soil moisture (SM), as a crucial input variable of land surface processes, plays a pivotal role in the global hydrological cycle. The aim of this paper is to examine the spatiotemporal variability in SM in the Heihe River Basin using all-weather land surface temperature (LST) and reanalysis land surface data. Initially, we downscaled and generated daily 1 km all-weather SM data (2020) for the Heihe River Basin. Subsequently, we investigated the spatial and temporal patterns of SM using geostatistical and time stability methods. The driving forces of the monthly SM were studied using the optimal parameter-based geographical detector (OPGD) model. The results indicate that the monthly mean values of the downscaled SM data range from 0.115 to 0.146, with a consistently lower SM content and suitable temporal stability throughout the year. Geostatistical analysis revealed that months with a higher SM level exhibit larger random errors and higher variability. Driving analysis based on the factor detector demonstrated that in months with a lower SM level, the q values of each driving factor are relatively small, and the primary driving factors are land cover and elevation. Conversely, in months with a higher SM level, the q values for each driving factor are larger, and the primary driving factors are the normalized difference vegetation index and LST. Furthermore, interaction detector analysis suggested that the spatiotemporal variation in SM is not influenced by a single driving factor but is the result of the interaction among multiple driving factors, with most interactions enhancing the combined effect of two factors. This paper presents a semi-supervised change detection optimization strategy as a means to mitigate the reliance of unsupervised/semi-supervised algorithms on pseudo-labels. The benefits of the Class-balanced Self-training Framework (CBST) and Deeplab V3+ were exploited to enhance classification accuracy for further analysis of microsurface land surface temperature (LST), as indicated by the change detection difference map obtained using iteratively reweighted multivariate alteration detection (IR-MAD). The evaluation statistics revealed that the DE_CBST optimization scheme achieves superior change detection outcomes. In comparison to the results of Deeplab V3+, the precision indicator demonstrated a 2.5% improvement, while the commission indicator exhibited a reduction of 2.5%. Furthermore, when compared to those of the CBST framework, the F1 score showed a notable enhancement of 6.3%, and the omission indicator exhibited a decrease of 8.9%. Moreover, DE_CBST optimization improves the identification accuracy of water in unchanged areas on the basis of Deeplab V3+ classification results and significantly improves the classification effect on bare land in changed areas on the basis of CBST classification results. In addition, the following conclusions are drawn from the discussion on the correlation between ground object categories and LST on a fine-scale: (1) the correlation between land use categories and LST all have good results in GTWR model fitting, which shows that local LST has a high correlation with the corresponding range of the land use category; (2) the changes of the local LST were generally consistent with the changes of the overall LST, but the evolution of the LST in different regions still has a certain heterogeneity, which might be related to the size of the local LST region; and (3) the local LST and the land use category of the corresponding grid cells did not show a completely consistent correspondence relationship. When discussing the local LST, it is necessary to consider the change in the overall LST, the land use types around the region, and the degree of interaction between surface objects. Drought is a complex natural hazard that affects various regions of the world, causing significant economic and environmental losses. Accurate and timely monitoring and forecasting of drought conditions are essential for mitigating their impacts and enhancing resilience. Satellite-based drought indices have the advantage of providing spatially continuous and consistent information on drought severity and extent. A new drought product was developed from the thermal infrared observations of the Fengyun (FY) series of satellites. We proposed a data fusion algorithm to combine multiple FY satellites, including FY-2F, FY-2G, and FY-4A, to create a long time series of a land surface temperature (LST) data set without systematic bias. An FY drought index (FYDI) is then derived by coupling the long-term LST data set with the surface–atmospheric energy exchange model at 4 km spatial resolution over China from 2013 to present. The performance and reliability of the new FYDI product are evaluated in this study by comparing it with the Meteorological-drought Composite Index (MCI), one of the authoritative drought monitoring indices used in the Chinese meteorological services. The main objectives of this paper are: (1) to evaluate the performance of the FYDI in capturing the spatiotemporal patterns of drought events over China; (2) to quantitively analyze the consistency between the FYDI and MCI products; and (3) to explore the advantages and limitations of the FYDI for drought monitoring and assessment. The preliminary results show that the FYDI product has good agreement with the MCI, indicating that the FYDI can effectively identify the occurrence, duration, severity, and frequency of drought events over China. These two products have a strong correlation in terms of drought detection, with a correlation coefficient of approximately 0.7. The FYDI was found to be particularly effective in the regions where ground observation is scarce, with the capability of reflecting the spatial heterogeneity and variability of drought patterns more clearly. Land surface temperature (LST) is one of the most important parameters of the interface between the earth surface and the atmosphere, and it plays a significant role in many research fields, such as agriculture, climate, hydrology, and the environment. However, the thermal infrared band of remote sensors is easily affected by clouds and aerosols, leading to many data gaps in LST products, which restricts the subsequent application of these products. In this paper, Beijing, China, is selected as the study area, and the LST data retrieved from Fengyun 4A (FY-4A) Advanced Geosynchronous Radiation Imager (AGRI) are reconstructed based on the two-point machine learning method. Firstly, the two-point machine learning model is built to reconstruct the theoretical clear-sky LST from simulated and actual images, and the accuracy of the reconstruction results is evaluated compared with the random forest algorithm and the inverse distance weighted method. Secondly, the actual LST under the influence of clouds is reconstructed by using the ERA5 reanalysis LST data as the auxiliary data, and the reconstruction accuracy is then evaluated by the field measurement LST data. The experimental results show that (1) the prediction accuracy of the two-point machine learning method is higher than that of the random forest method in both simulated data and actual data experiments; (2) the R2 of reconstructed LST under theoretical clear-sky conditions is 0.6860 and the root mean square error (RMSE) is 2.9 K, while the R2 of the reconstructed accuracy of actual LST under clouds is 0.7275 and the RMSE is 2.6 K, i.e., the RMSE decreases by 10.34%; (3) the two-point machine method combined with the auxiliary ERA5 LST data can well reconstruct LST under cloudy conditions and present a reasonable LST distribution. Accurate inventories of grasslands are important for studies of greenhouse gas (GHG) dynamics, as grasslands store about one-third of the global terrestrial carbon stocks. This paper develops a framework for large-area grassland mapping based on the probability of grassland occurrence and the interactive pathways of fractional vegetation and soil-related endmember nexuses. In this study, grassland occurrence probability maps were produced based on data on bio-climate factors obtained from MODIS/Terra Land Surface Temperature (MOD11A2), MODIS/Terra Vegetation Indices (MOD13A3), and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM 3B43) using the random forests (RF) method. Time series of 8-day fractional vegetation-related endmembers (green vegetation, non-photosynthetic vegetation, sand land, saline land, and dark surfaces) were generated using linear spectral mixture analysis (LSMA) based on MODIS/Terra Surface Reflectance data (MOD09A1). Time-series endmember fraction maps and grassland occurrence probabilities were employed to map grassland distribution using an RF model. This approach improved the accuracy by 5% compared to using endmember fractions alone. Additionally, based on the grassland occurrence probability maps, we identified extensive ecologically sensitive regions, encompassing 1.54 (104 km2) of desert-to-steppe (D-S) and 2.34 (104 km2) of steppe-to-meadow (S-M) transition regions. Among these, the D-S area is located near the threshold of 310 mm/yr in precipitation, an annual temperature of 10.16 °C, and a surface comprehensive drought index (TVPDI) of 0.59. This Special Issue focuses on the data, methods, techniques, and empirical outcomes of urban heat island studies from a time and space perspective. We showcase research papers, empirical studies, conceptual or analytic reviews, and policy-related tasks to help achieve urban sustainability. We are interested in target methodologies and datasets capturing urban heat island phenomena, including novel techniques for urban heat island monitoring and forecasting with the integration of remote sensing and GIS, the spatial relationship between urban heat island intensity and land use/cover distribution in metropolitan areas, the geographical patterns and processes of urban heat island phenomena in large cities, spatial differences in urban heat island intensity between developing and developed countries, urban heat island disaster mitigation and adaptation for future urban sustainability, and prediction and scenario analysis of urban heat island formation for policy and planning purposes. Geothermal energy is an eco-friendly, renewable source of underground thermal energy that exists in the interior of the earth. By tapping into these formations, fluids can be channeled to heat the rock formations above, resulting in a significantly higher land surface temperature (LST). However, LST readings are influenced by various factors such as sun radiation, cyclical variations, and precipitation, which can mask the temperature anomalies caused by geothermal heat. To address these issues and highlight the LST anomalies caused by geothermal heat, this paper proposes a methodology to efficiently and quickly calculate the multi-temporal LST leveraging of the Google Earth Engine (GEE) in the Damxung–Yangbajain basin, Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. This method incorporates terrain correction, altitude correction, and multi-temporal series comparison to extract thermal anomaly signals. The existing geothermal manifestations are used as a benchmark to further refine the methodology. The results indicate that the annual mean winter LST is a sensitive indicator of geothermal anomaly signals. The annual mean winter LST between 2015 and 2020 varied from −14.7 °C to 26.7 °C, with an average of 8.6 °C in the study area. After altitude correction and water body removal, the annual mean winter LST varied from −22.1 °C to 23.3 °C, with an average of 6.2 °C. When combining the distribution of faults with the results of the annual mean winter LST, this study delineated the geothermal potential areas that are located predominantly around the fault zone at the southern foot of the Nyainqentanglha Mountains. Geothermal potential areas exhibited a higher LST, ranging from 12.6 °C to 23.3 °C. These potential areas extend to the northeast, and the thermal anomaly range reaches as high as 19.6%. The geothermal potential area makes up 8.2% of the entire study area. The results demonstrate that the approach successfully identified parts of known geothermal fields and indicates sweet spots for future research. The paper took Guang'an City in Sichuan Province of China as a research region, and it built an evaluation index system based on 14 evaluation indices according to four criteria, namely, ecological background, ecological structure, ecological benefits, and ecological stress. The Delphi algorithm and entropy weight (a combination of subjective and objective methods) were used to calculate the weight value of each evaluation index, and an ideal point model was used to calculate the ideal point value. The ideal point ecological grade was classified, and the principal component analysis method was used to obtain the main control factors of each year, which revealed the relationship between the ecological distribution of ideal points and the environmental impact factor, with the changing characteristics of the ecology in the research region according to the hotspot model of the spatial differentiation of land ecological quality as the main control factor. Lastly, the paper also analyzed the land ecological quality of Guangan City in 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015. The study results show that the overall land ecological quality in Guang'an City generally increased from 2005 to 2015. The proportion of forest land area and the temperature were the most important main control factors. The air temperature and the land ecological quality were positively correlated. The land surface temperature (LST) images obtained by thermal infrared remote sensing sensors are of great significance for numerous fields of research. However, the low spatial resolution is a drawback of LST images. Downscaling is an effective way to solve this problem. The traditional downscaling methods, however, have various drawbacks, including their low temporal and spectral resolutions, difficult processes, numerous errors, and single downscaling factor. They also rely on two or more separate satellite platforms. These drawbacks can be partially compensated for by the Sentinel-3 satellite's ability to acquire LST and multispectral images simultaneously. This paper proposes a downscaling model based on Sentinel-3 satellite and ASTER GDEM images—D-DisTrad—and compares the effects of the D-DisTrad model with DisTrad model and TsHARP model over four sites and four seasons. The mean bias (MB) range of the D-DisTrad model is −0.001–0.017 K, the mean absolute error (MAE) range is 0.103–0.891 K, and the root mean square error (RMSE) range is 0.220–1.235 K. The Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) and R2 ranges are 0.938–0.994 and 0.889–0.989, respectively. The D-DisTrad model has the smallest error, the highest correlation, and the best visual effect, and can eliminate some "mosaic" effects in the original image. This paper shows that the D-DisTrad model can improve the spatial resolution and visual effects of LST images while maintaining high temporal resolution, and discusses the influence of the terrain and land cover on LST data. The land surface temperature (LST), defined as the radiative skin temperature of the ground, plays a critical role in land surface systems, from the regional to the global scale. The commonly utilized daily Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LST product at a resolution of one kilometer often contains missing values attributable to atmospheric influences. Reconstructing these missing values and obtaining a spatially complete LST is of great research significance. However, most existing methods are tailored for reconstructing clear-sky LST rather than the more realistic cloudy-sky LST, and their computational processes are relatively complex. Therefore, this paper proposes a simple and effective real LST reconstruction method combining Thermal Infrared and Microwave Remote Sensing Based on Temperature Conservation (TMTC). TMTC first fills the microwave data gaps and then downscales the microwave data by using MODIS LST and auxiliary data. This method maintains the temperature of the resulting LST and microwave LST on the microwave pixel scale. The average Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and R2 of TMTC were 3.14 K, 4.10 K, and 0.88 for the daytime and 2.34 K, 3.20 K, and 0.90 for the nighttime, respectively. The ideal MAE of the TMTC method exhibits less than 1.5 K during daylight hours and less than 1 K at night, but the accuracy of the method is currently limited by the inversion accuracy of microwave LST and whether different LST products have undergone time normalization. The thermal infrared data of Fengyun 4A (FY-4A) geostationary meteorological satellite can be used to retrieve hourly land surface temperature (LST). In this paper, seven candidate algorithms are compared and evaluated. The Ulivieri (1985) algorithm is determined to be optimal for the algorithm of FY-4A LST official products. The refined algorithm coefficients for distinguishing dry and moist atmosphere were established for daytime and nighttime, respectively. Then, FY-4A LST official products under clear-sky conditions are produced. The validation results show that: (1) Compared with in-situ measured LST data at the HeBi crop measurement network, the root mean square errors (RMSE) were 2.139 and 2.447 K. Compared with in-situ measured LST data at Naqu alpine meadow site of Tibet plateau, the RMSE was 2.86 K. (2) When compared with the MODIS LST product, the RMSE was 1.64, 2.17, 2.6, and 1.73 K in March, July, October, and December, respectively. By the bias long-time change at a single site, RMSE of the XLHT (city) and GZH (desert) sites were 2.735 and 2.97 K, respectively. Remote sensing can represent an important instrument for monitoring landfills and their evolution over time. In general, remote sensing can offer a global and rapid view of the Earth's surface. Thanks to a wide variety of heterogeneous sensors, it can provide high-level information, making it a useful technology for many applications. The main purpose of this paper is to provide a review of relevant methods based on remote sensing for landfill identification and monitoring. The methods found in the literature make use of measurements acquired from both multi-spectral and radar sensors and exploit vegetation indexes, land surface temperature, and backscatter information, either separately or in combination. Moreover, additional information can be provided by atmospheric sounders able to detect gas emissions (e.g., methane) and hyperspectral sensors. In order to provide a comprehensive overview of the full potential of Earth observation data for landfill monitoring, this article also provides applications of the main procedures presented to selected test sites. These applications highlight the potentialities of satellite-borne sensors for improving the detection and delimitation of landfills and enhancing the evaluation of waste disposal effects on environmental health. The results revealed that a single-sensor-based analysis can provide significant information on the landfill evolution. However, a data fusion approach that incorporates data acquired from heterogeneous sensors, including visible/near infrared, thermal infrared, and synthetic aperture radar (SAR), can result in a more effective instrument to fully support the monitoring of landfills and their effect on the surrounding area. In particular, the results show that a synergistic use of multispectral indexes, land surface temperature, and the backscatter coefficient retrieved from SAR sensors can improve the sensitivity to changes in the spatial geometry of the considered site. Recent global warming has led to increased coastal disturbances through a significant transfer of heat between the land and the ocean surface. The polar regions show excessive temperature changes resulting in massive ice sheet melting. Mid-latitudinal storms pull heat away from the equator towards the poles; therefore, the global sea level is rising, making coastal cities the most vulnerable. In last few decades, rapid urbanization in big cities has drastically changed the land cover and land use due to deforestation, which has led to increased land surface temperatures (LSTs). This eventually leads to urban flooding due to oceanic storm surges frequently created by low pressure over the ocean during summer. This paper considered factors such as drastic unplanned urbanization to analyze coastal cities as the focal point of the generation of heat yielding the annihilation of the natural topography. Urban heat pockets (UHP) were studied for nine megacities, which were selected at an interval of 5° of latitudinal difference in the northern hemisphere (NH) since 70% of densely populated megacities are located in coastal regions. A comparative surface temperature analysis was effectively carried out with the same latitudinal reference for nine mid-sized cities using the derived LST data from Landsat 8. The results provide a comparative classification of surface temperature variations across the coastal cities over the NH. This study infers that the issues pertaining to growing urbanization are very important for analyzing the proportional impact caused by the settlement hierarchy and lays a robust foundation for advanced studies of global warming in coastal urban environments. As one of the best indicators of the periglacial environment, ice-wedge polygons (IWPs) are important for arctic landscapes, hydrology, engineering, and ecosystems. Thus, a better understanding of the spatiotemporal dynamics and evolution of IWPs is key to evaluating the hydrothermal state and carbon budgets of the arctic permafrost environment. In this paper, the dynamics of ground surface deformation (GSD) in IWP zones (2018–2019) and their influencing factors over the last 20 years in Saskylakh, northwestern Yakutia, Russia were investigated using the Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) and Google Earth Engine (GEE). The results show an annual ground surface deformation rate (AGSDR) in Saskylakh at −49.73 to 45.97 mm/a during the period from 1 June 2018 to 3 May 2019. All the selected GSD regions indicate that the relationship between GSD and land surface temperature (LST) is positive (upheaving) for regions with larger AGSDR, and negative (subsidence) for regions with lower AGSDR. The most drastic deformation was observed at the Aeroport regions with GSDs rates of −37.06 mm/a at tower and 35.45 mm/a at runway. The GSDs are negatively correlated with the LST of most low-centered polygons (LCPs) and high-centered polygons (HCPs). Specifically, the higher the vegetation cover, the higher the LST and the thicker the active layer. An evident permafrost degradation has been observed in Saskylakh as reflected in higher ground temperatures, lusher vegetation, greater active layer thickness, and fluctuant numbers and areal extents of thermokarst lakes and ponds. It has become undeniable that global land surface temperature (LST) has continued to rise in recent years. The threat of extreme heat to humans has become self-evident, especially in arid regions. Many studies have clarified the temperature rise/fall mechanism of LST from the perspective of influencing factors. However, there are few studies on mitigating LST from the standpoint of regional networks. This paper first combines Landsat 8 with Sentinel-2 imagery for LST downscaling based on the Google Earth engine as a way to match local climate zone (LCZ) with 17 classification types. Then, the thermal environment resistance surface is constructed according to LCZ, and the essential cold sources are identified using morphological spatial pattern analysis (MSPA) and circuit theory to form the thermal environment green corridor and obtain the pinch point and barrier point areas. The results show that (1) The downscaling of LST based on random forest (RF) for the Urumqi–Changji–Wujiaqu metropolitan area has an R2 of 0.860 and an RMSE of 3.23, with high downscaling accuracy. (2) High temperature (HT), medium temperature (MT), and low temperature (LT) have the largest proportions in the study area; HT dominates in Urumqi, LT in Changji, and MT in Wujiaqu. (3) The natural types (LCZ-D, LCZ-C, and LCZ-F) in the LCZ classification occupy a large area, and the building types are mainly concentrated in Urumqi; LCZ-D, LCZ-G, and LCZ-A contribute the most to the cooling of LST, and LCZ-F, LCZ-C, and LCZ-10 contribute the most to the warming of LST. (4) After identifying critical cold source patches according to MSPA to arrive at 253 green corridors, subsensitive corridors and sensitive corridors need to take certain measures to prevent corridor blockage; pinch point areas, as well as barrier point areas, need to be protected and repaired according to their respective characteristics. In summary, corresponding cooling measures to specific areas can improve the connectivity between cooling sources and slow down the temperature increase of the whole area. The coming years will see the launch of several missions (TRISHNA, LSTM, SBG), which will acquire images in four or more spectral bands in thermal infrared (TIR) at high spatial resolution (~50–60 m) and with high temporal revisit (~2–3 days). The derivation of surface temperature and emissivity values from top-of-atmosphere radiances is not straightforward, as it is a non-deterministic process requiring additional information. In this paper, we propose the algorithm DirecTES to efficiently separate surface temperature and emissivity. This algorithm is based on the use of a comprehensive spectral database of emissivity, resulting in a well-posed deterministic problem while not assuming strong hypotheses. The algorithm can also benefit from non-TIR information, such as the acquisitions from the same satellite but in the visible and near-infrared domains, or exogenous data—land/sea mask or soil-occupation map. These would help identify the nature of the surface and therefore improve the temperature and emissivity retrievals. After the complete description of the method, we evaluate the performances of DirecTES on theoretical landscapes in TRISHNA's context under a large range of atmospheric conditions. The retrievals of surface temperature reach RMSEs of 0.8 K over vegetation and 0.5 K over water, including both sensor and atmospheric uncertainties. We then evaluate DirecTES on ECOSTRESS images on sites where the ECOSTRESS Land Surface Temperature (LST) performance has been documented; DirecTES surface temperature retrievals are consistent with the ECOSTRESS LST product and the in-situ data. The land surface temperature obtained from remote sensing was widely used in the simulation of permafrost mapping instead of air temperature with the rapid development of remote sensing technology. The land surface freezing and thawing index (LFI and LTI), which is commonly regarded as the ground surface freezing and thawing index (GFI and GTI), can produce certain errors in the simulation of permafrost distribution on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. This paper improved the accuracy of the thermal condition of the surface soil in the Qinghai–Tibet Engineering Corridor (QTEC) by calculating the LFI (or LTI) and N-factors. The environmental factors affecting the spatial distribution of the GFI and GTI were detected by the GeoDetector model. Finally, the multiple linear relationships between the GFI (or GTI) and the environmental factors were established. The results from 25 monitoring sites in the QTEC show that the Nf (ratio of GFI to LFI) is 1.088, and the Nt (ratio of GTI to LTI) is 0.554. The explanatory power of the interaction between elevation and latitude for the GFI and GTI is 79.3% and 85.6%, respectively. The multiple linear regression model with six explanatory variables established by GFI (or GTI) has good accuracy. The estimation of urban irrigation water requirements has often been approached from an agricultural perspective. This approach is flawed, as the intention of estimating agricultural water is to optimize yield. Recent studies have reported that urban irrigation systems waste about 34% of water, an alarming number for arid cities. The intention for urban irrigation is complex and dependent on the microclimates created by the development of the landscape. In this paper, we investigate the role of the urban landscape on the irrigation water requirements in arid cities. The role of the landscape in determining the irrigation water requirements is examined through the changes in surface-heat energy exchanges. The effects of landscapes are examined through land use change, buildings' geometry and orientation, and vegetation types. The irrigation water requirement is assessed as the function of urban evapotranspiration and irrigation efficiency. The development of land use characteristics includes the transition from undeveloped (natural) surfaces to residential, commercial, road surfaces, or vegetated surfaces. The orientation and geometry of the streets are assessed by changes in sky view factor values due to building geometry. Three landscapes varying in vegetation type and water use are investigated. The study focuses on understanding the heat exchanges and their effects on irrigation water requirements in arid climates. Two major cities were studied: Las Vegas Valley and Phoenix metropolitan. The study concludes that the development of hardscapes, including commercial and road infrastructures, increases the overall surface temperature by 2 °C per unit change in albedo, thereby increasing evapotranspiration and urban irrigation water requirement. In addition, landscape diversity also plays a crucial role in changing the irrigation water requirement. This study highlights the importance of making development decisions in urban settings and their effects on water resources. In the rapid urbanization process, climate change has a huge impact on the urban thermal environment, and the urban heat island has attracted widespread attention from society. How to better detect, analyze, and evaluate the urban heat island effect has become a hot issue in current urban environmental research. However, the correlation analysis of heat island factors mostly adopts the conventional least square method, without considering the correlation of and the interaction between spatial elements. At the same time, the single analysis method makes it difficult to analyze environmental problems scientifically, which leads to great bias. Therefore, in this paper, the spatial autoregressive confusion model was used to analyze the satellite data of Beijing, and a preliminary temperature model of Beijing for all seasons was established. The regression results show that the surface temperature of Beijing has a strong spatial autocorrelation, and that the modified normalized difference water index and the normalized differential vegetation index have a strong negative effect on the land surface temperature. The prediction models established in this study can provide accurate and sustainable data support in the urbanization process and aid in the creation of a sustainable and effective urban environment. Satellite thermal infrared remote sensing has received worldwide attention in earthquake-precursors exploration. Meanwhile, it has also encountered great controversy due to the lack of quantitative interpretation of the observations, despite the existing qualitative physical mechanisms being able to greatly help us understand thermal infrared anomalies. Here, we report a potential mechanism to quantitatively analyze co-seismic thermal infrared anomalies based on temperature change caused by stress variation through theoretical, experimental, and field investigations. This paper firstly deduces theoretically the temperature variation during elastic deformation of rock on the basis of the thermodynamic theory. Secondly, three laboratory experiments on rock samples are conducted to verify the theoretical estimates of the temperature changes caused by stress variations using an infrared camera with the spectral range of 8~12 μm. Thirdly, a mechanical model on thrust faults is built to evaluate the co-seismic temperature drop as a result of thrust faulting. The model shows that the co-seismic temperature drop in rocks should be in the order of 0.18 K. This variation in rock temperature may cause a change in heat equivalent to changes in shallow atmospheric temperatures of 3.0–6.0 K, which is in accordance with the temperature anomalies observed by satellite thermal infrared remote sensing. In addition, the temperature change caused by crustal stress variation may involve a large spatial scale, covering the whole focal area, which has characteristics of regional distribution and is conducive to satellite observation. High temporal resolution and spatially complete (seamless) land surface temperature (LST) play a crucial role in numerous geoscientific aspects. This paper proposes a data fusion method for producing hourly seamless LST from Himawari-8 Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) data. First, the high-quality hourly clear-sky LST was retrieved from AHI data by an improved temperature and emissivity separation algorithm; then, the hourly spatially complete China Land Data Assimilation System (CLDAS) LST was calibrated by a bias correction method. Finally, the strengths of the retrieved AHI LST and bias-corrected CLDAS LST were combined by the multiresolution Kalman filter (MKF) algorithm to generate hourly seamless LST at different spatial scales. Validation results showed the bias and root mean square error (RMSE) of the fused LST at a finer scale (0.02°) were −0.65 K and 3.38 K under cloudy sky conditions, the values were −0.55 K and 3.03 K for all sky conditions, respectively. The bias and RMSE of the fused LST at the coarse scale (0.06°) are −0.46 K and 3.11 K, respectively. This accuracy is comparable to the accuracy of all-weather LST derived by various methods reported in the published literature. In addition, we obtained the consistent LST images across different scales. The seamless finer LST data over East Asia can not only reflect the spatial distribution characteristics of LST during different seasons, but also exactly present the diurnal variation of the LST. With the proposed method, we have produced a 0.02° seamless LST dataset from 2016 through 2021 that is freely available at the National Tibetan Plateau Data Center. Thermal infrared hyperspectral imager is one of the frontier payloads in current hyperspectral remote sensing research. It has broad application prospects in land and ocean temperature inversion, environmental monitoring, and other fields. However, due to the influence of the production process of the infrared focal plane array and the characteristics of the material itself, the infrared focal plane array inevitably has blind pixels, resulting in spectral distortion of the data or even invalid data, which limits the application of thermal infrared hyperspectral data. Most of the current blind pixels detection methods are based on the spatial dimension of the image, that is, processing single-band area images. The push-broom thermal infrared hyperspectral imager works completely different from the conventional area array thermal imager, and only one row of data is obtained per scan. Therefore, the current method cannot be directly applied to blind pixels detection of push-broom thermal infrared hyperspectral imagers. Based on the imaging principle of push-broom thermal infrared hyperspectral imager, we propose a practical blind pixels detection method. The method consists of two stages to detect and repair four common types of blind pixels: dead pixel, dark current pixel, blinking pixel, and noise pixel. In the first stage, dead pixels and dark current pixels with a low spectral response rate are detected by spectral filter detection; noise pixels are detected by spatial noise detection; and dark current pixels with a negative response slope are detected by response slope detection. In the second stage, according to the random appearance of blinking pixels, spectral filter detection is used to detect and repair spectral anomalies caused by blinking pixels line by line. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, a flight test was carried out, using the Airborne Thermal-infrared Hyperspectral Imaging System (ATHIS), the latest thermal infrared imager in China, for data acquisition. The results show that the method proposed in this paper can accurately detect and repair blind pixel, thus effectively eliminating spectral anomalies and significantly improving image quality. This paper aims to better understand why there was a global warming pause in 2000–2015 and why the global mean surface temperature (GMST) has risen again in recent years. We present and statistically analyze substantial time-series observed datasets of global lower-stratospheric temperature (GLST), troposphere–stratosphere temperature climatology, global land surface air temperature, GMST, sea ice extent (SIE) and snow cover extent (SCE), combined with modeled calculations of GLSTs and GMSTs. The observed and analyzed results show that GLST/SCE has stabilized since the mid-1990s with no significant change over the past two and a half decades. Upper-stratospheric warming at high latitudes has been observed and GMST or global land surface air temperature has reached a plateau since the mid-2000s with the removal of natural effects. In marked contrast, continued drastic warmings at the coasts of polar regions (particularly Russia and Alaska) are observed and well explained by the sea-ice-loss warming amplification mechanism. The calculated GMSTs by the parameter-free quantum-physics warming model of halogenated greenhouse gases (GHGs) show excellent agreement with the observed GMSTs after the natural El Niño southern oscillation and volcanic effects are removed. These results have provided strong evidence for the dominant warming mechanism of anthropogenic halogenated GHGs. In recent years, the conversion of saline-alkali land to rice fields has become the most dominant land use change feature in western Jilin, leading to significant surface greening. Saline–alkali land and paddy fields have distinct surface biophysical properties; however, there is a lack of systematic assessment of the moderating effect of planting rice on saline–alkali land on regional climate by changing surface properties. In this paper, multiscale data on the surface temperature of saline–alkali land and paddy fields were obtained using 1 km MODIS product, 30 m Landsat 8 satellite imagery and centimeter-scale UAV imagery in Da'an City, western Jilin as the study area, and the various characteristics of the surface temperature of saline-alkali land and paddy fields in different months of the year and at different times of the day were analyzed. Furthermore, the effect of rice cultivation in saline–alkali land on the local surface temperature was assessed using a space-for-time approach. The results based on satellite observations including both MODIS and Landsat showed that the surface temperature of saline–alkali land was significantly higher than that of paddy fields during the crop growing season, especially in July and August. The high temporal resolution MODIS LST data also indicated the paddy fields cool the daytime surface temperature, while warming the nighttime surface temperature, which was in contrast for saline–alkali land during the growing season. High-resolution UAV observations in July confirmed that the cooling effect of paddy fields was most significant at the middle of day. From the biophysical perspective, the reclamation of saline–alkali land into paddy fields leads to an increase in leaf area index, followed by a significant increase in evapotranspiration. Meanwhile, rice cultivation in saline–alkali land reduces surface albedo and increases surface net radiation. The trade-off relationship between the two determines the seasonal difference in the surface temperature response of saline–alkali land for rice cultivation. At the same time, the daily cycle of crop evapotranspiration and the thermal insulation effect of paddy fields at night are the main reasons for the intraday difference in surface temperature between saline–alkali land and paddy field. Based on the multiscale assessment of the impact of rice cultivation in saline-alkali land on surface temperature, this study provides a scientific basis for predicting future regional climate change and comprehensively understanding the ecological and environmental benefits of saline–alkali land development. Surface urban heat islands are widely focused on due to their close relationship with a series of environmental issues. Obtaining a precise footprint is an important prerequisite for heat island research. However, the land surface temperature curves used for calculating footprint are affected by factors such as the complexity of land-use types, thereby affecting the accuracy of footprint. Therefore, the rotational-scan exponential decay model is developed in this paper, which first takes the gravity center of an urban area as the origin of polar coordinates, specifies due north as the starting direction, and rotationally scans the suburbs that are within 20 km outside urban areas in a clockwise direction at an angle of 1°. The eligible suburbs are screened out according to the built-up area rate, water body rate, and merge tolerance. Then, exponential decay fitting of the temperature curve is performed to obtain the extension distance of the heat island and the background temperature, which are used to determine the final footprint. Based on the method, the footprints of 15 cities were calculated and compared with those of the traditional method. The results show that: (1) this method could effectively eliminate the influence of a large number of contiguous built-up areas and water bodies in the suburbs on the footprint calculation, thus greatly improving the accuracy of the temperature curve and footprint. (2) Three of four cities had the largest footprint boundary in spring. All four cities had the strongest heat island intensity in summer and the smallest footprint boundary and intensity in winter. (3) Coupling effect would aggravate the negative impact of heat islands in the suburbs and threaten the suburban environment. As a state-of-the-art method, it can enhance the calculation accuracy and precisely reflect the spatial pattern of footprint, which is of great significance for the sustainable development of cities. Land surface temperature (LST) is a vital parameter in the surface energy budget and water cycle. One of the most important foundations for LST studies is a theory to understand how to model LST with various influencing factors, such as canopy structure, solar radiation, and atmospheric conditions. Both physical-based and empirical methods have been widely applied. However, few studies have compared these two categories of methods. In this paper, a physical-based method, soil canopy observation of photochemistry and energy fluxes (SCOPE), and two empirical methods, random forest (RF) and long short-term memory (LSTM), were selected as representatives for comparison. Based on a series of measurements from meteorological stations in the Heihe River Basin, these methods were evaluated in different dimensions, i.e., the difference within the same surface type, between different years, and between different climate types. The comparison results indicate a relatively stable performance of SCOPE with a root mean square error (RMSE) of approximately 2.0 K regardless of surface types and years but requires many inputs and a high computational cost. The empirical methods performed relatively well in dealing with cases either within the same surface type or changes in temporal scales individually, with an RMSE of approximately 1.50 K, yet became less compatible in regard to different climate types. Although the overall accuracy is not as stable as that of the physical method, it has the advantages of fast calculation speed and little consideration of the internal structure of the model. Remotely sensed land surface temperature (LST) is often used as a proxy for air temperature in urban heat island studies, particularly to illustrate relative temperature differences between locations. Two sensors are used predominantly in the literature, Landsat and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). However, each has shortcomings that currently limit its utility for many urban applications. Landsat has high spatial resolution but low temporal resolution, and may miss hot days, while MODIS has high temporal resolution but low spatial resolution, which is inadequate to represent the fine grain heterogeneity in cities. In this paper, we overcome this inadequacy by combining high spatial frequency Environmental Services (ES), Landsat-driven Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and MODIS low spatial frequency background LST at different spatial frequency bands (spatial spectral composition). The method is able to provide fine scale LST four times daily on any day of the year. Using data from Paris in 2019 we show that (1) daytime cooling by vegetation reaches a maximum of 30 °C, above which there is no further increase in cooling. In addition, (2) the cooling is relatively local and does not extend further than 200 m beyond the boundary of the NBS. As China's railways continue to expand into the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, the number of deep-buried long tunnels is increasing. Tunnel-damaging geothermal disasters have become a common problem in underground engineering. Predicting the potential geothermal disaster areas along the Yunnan–Tibet railway project is conducive to its planning and construction and the realization of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—specifically, the industry, innovation and infrastructure goal (SDG 9). In this paper, the Yunnan–Tibet railway project was the study area. Landsat-8 images and other spatial data were used to investigate causes and distributions of geothermal disasters. A collinearity diagnosis of environmental variables was carried out. Twelve environmental variables, such as land surface temperature, were selected to predict potential geothermal disaster areas using four niche models (MaxEnt, Bioclim, Domain and GARP). The prediction results were divided into four levels and had different characteristics. Among them, the area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and kappa values of the MaxEnt model were the highest, at 0.84 and 0.63, respectively. Its prediction accuracy was the highest and the algorithm results are more suitable for the prediction of geothermal disasters. The prediction results show that the geothermal disaster potential is greatest in the Markam-Deqen, Zuogong-Zayu and Baxoi-Zayu regions. Through jack-knife analysis, it was found that the land surface temperature, active faults, water system distribution and Moho depth are the key environmental predictors of potential geothermal disaster areas. Vegetation phenology and its spatiotemporal driving factors are essential to reflect global climate change, the surface carbon cycle and regional ecology, and further quantitative studies on spatiotemporal heterogeneity and its two-way driving are needed. Based on MODIS phenology, meteorology, land cover and other data from 2001 to 2019, this paper analyzes the phenology change characteristics of the Yangtze River Delta from three dimensions: time, plane space and elevation. Then, the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of phenology and its driving factors are explored with random forest and geographic detector methods. The results show that (1) the advance of start of season (SOS) is insignificant—with 0.17 days per year; the end of season (EOS) shows a significant delay—0.48 days per year. The preseason temperature has a greater contribution to SOS, while preseason precipitation is main factor in determining EOS. (2) Spatial differences of the phenological index do not strictly obey the change rules of latitude at a provincial scale. The SOS of Jiangsu and Anhui is earlier than that of Zhejiang and Shanghai, and EOS shows an obvious double-clustering phenomenon. In addition, a divergent response of EOS with elevation grades is found; the most significant changes are observed at grades below 100 m. (3) Land cover (LC) type is a major factor of the spatial heterogeneity of phenology, and its change may also be one of the insignificant factors driving the interannual change of phenology. Furthermore, nighttime land surface temperature (NLST) has a relatively larger contribution to the spatial heterogeneity in non-core urban areas, but population density (PD) contributes little. Realistic modeling of high-resolution earth radiation signals in the visible-thermal spectral domain remains difficult, due to the complex radiation interdependence induced by the heterogeneous and rugged features of land surface. To find the trade-off between accuracy and efficiency for image simulation, this paper established a unified simulation framework for the entire visible-thermal spectral domain, based on the energy balance between solar-reflected and thermal radiation components over rugged surfaces. Considering the joint contributions of atmospheric and topographic adjacency effects, three spatial–spectral convolution kernels were uniformly designed to quantify the topographic irradiance, the trapping effect, and the atmospheric adjacency effect. Radiation signal simulation was implemented in three forms: land surface temperature (LST), bottom of atmosphere (BOA) radiance, and top of atmosphere (TOA) radiance. The accuracy was validated with onboard data from China's Gaofen-5 visual and infrared multispectral sensor (VIMS) over rugged desert. The simulation results demonstrate that the root mean square of relative deviations between the simulated and onboard TOA radiance are related to terrain, as 3–17% and 6–38% for the summer and winter scene, respectively. The evaluation of radiance components indicates the utility of the simulation framework to quantify the uncertainty associated with atmosphere and terrain coupling effects, in the sensor design and operation stages. Narrowband-to-broadband conversion is a critical procedure for mapping land-surface broadband albedo using multi-spectral narrowband remote-sensing observations. Due to the significant difference in optical characteristics between soil and vegetation, NTB conversion is influenced by the variation in vegetation coverage on different surface types. To reduce this influence, this paper applies an approach that couples NTB coefficient with the NDVI. Multi-staged NDVI dependent NTB coefficient look-up tables (LUT) for Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Polarization and Directionality of Earth's Reflectance (POLDER) and Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) were calculated using 6000 spectra samples collected from two typical spectral databases. Sensitivity analysis shows that NTB conversion is affected more by the NDVI for sensors with fewer band numbers, such as POLDER and AVHRR. Analysis of the validation results based on simulations, in situ measurements and global albedo products indicates that by using the multi-staged NDVI dependent NTB method, the conversion accuracies of these two sensors could be improved by 2%-13% on different NDVI classes compared with the general method. This improvement could be as high as 15%, on average, and 35% on dense vegetative surface compared with the global broadband albedo product of POLDER. This paper shows that it is necessary to consider surface reflectance characteristics associated with the NDVI on albedo-NTB conversion for remote sensors with fewer than five bands. As an important parameter in recent and numerous environmental studies, soil moisture (SM) influences the exchange of water and energy at the interface between the land surface and atmosphere. Accurate estimate of the spatio-temporal variations of SM is critical for numerous large-scale terrestrial studies. Although microwave remote sensing provides many algorithms to obtain SM at large scale, such as SMOS and SMAP etc., resulting in many data products, they are almost low resolution and not applicable in small catchment or field scale. Estimations of SM from optical and thermal remote sensing have been studied for many years and significant progress has been made. In contrast to previous reviews, this paper presents a new, comprehensive and systematic review of using optical and thermal remote sensing for estimating SM. The physical basis and status of the estimation methods are analyzed and summarized in detail. The most important and latest advances in soil moisture estimation using temporal information have been shown in this paper. SM estimation from optical and thermal remote sensing mainly depends on the relationship between SM and the surface reflectance or vegetation index. The thermal infrared remote sensing methods uses the relationship between SM and the surface temperature or variations of surface temperature/vegetation index. These approaches often have complex derivation processes and many approximations. Therefore, combinations of optical and thermal infrared remotely sensed data can provide more valuable information for SM estimation. Moreover, the advantages and weaknesses of different approaches are compared and applicable conditions as well as key issues in current soil moisture estimation algorithms are discussed. Spatially-detailed forest height data are useful to monitor local, regional and global carbon cycle. LiDAR remote sensing can measure three-dimensional forest features but generating spatially-contiguous forest height maps at a large scale (e.g., continental and global) is problematic because existing LiDAR instruments are still data-limited and expensive. This paper proposes a new approach based on an artificial neural network (ANN) for modeling of forest canopy heights over the China continent. Our model ingests spaceborne LiDAR metrics and multiple geospatial predictors including climatic variables (temperature and precipitation), forest type, tree cover percent and land surface reflectance. The spaceborne LiDAR instrument used in the study is the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS), which can provide within-footprint forest canopy heights. The ANN was trained with pairs between spatially discrete LiDAR metrics and full gridded geo-predictors. This generates valid conjugations to predict heights over the China continent. The ANN modeled heights were evaluated with three different reference data. First, field measured tree heights from three experiment sites were used to validate the ANN model predictions. The observed tree heights at the site-scale agreed well with the modeled forest heights (R = 0.827, and RMSE = 4.15 m). Second, spatially discrete GLAS observations and a continuous map from the interpolation of GLAS-derived tree heights were separately used to evaluate the ANN model. We obtained R of 0.725 and RMSE of 7.86 m and R of 0.759 and RMSE of 8.85 m, respectively. Further, inter-comparisons were also performed with two existing forest height maps. Our model granted a moderate agreement with the existing satellite-based forest height maps (R = 0.738, and RMSE = 7.65 m (R² = 0.52, and RMSE = 8.99 m). Our results showed that the ANN model developed in this paper is capable of estimating forest heights over the China continent with a satisfactory accuracy. Optical remotely sensed images in mountainous areas are subject to radiometric distortions induced by topographic effects, which need to be corrected before quantitative applications. Based on Li model and Sandmeier model, this paper proposed an improved physics-based model for the topographic correction of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images. The model employed Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) thresholds to approximately divide land targets into eleven groups, due to NDVI's lower sensitivity to topography and its significant role in indicating land cover type. Within each group of terrestrial targets, corresponding MODIS BRDF (Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function) products were used to account for land surface's BRDF effect, and topographic effects are corrected without Lambertian assumption. The methodology was tested with two TM scenes of severely rugged mountain areas acquired under different sun elevation angles. Results demonstrated that reflectance of sun-averted slopes was evidently enhanced, and the overall quality of images was improved with topographic effect being effectively suppressed. Correlation coefficients between Near Infra-Red band reflectance and illumination condition reduced almost to zero, and coefficients of variance also showed some reduction. By comparison with the other two physics-based models (Sandmeier model and Li model), the proposed model showed favorable results on two tested Landsat scenes. With the almost half-century accumulation of Landsat data and the successive launch and operation of Landsat 8, the improved model in this paper can be potentially helpful for the topographic correction of Landsat and Landsat-like data. Multi-angular observation of land surface thermal radiation is considered to be a promising method of performing the angular normalization of land surface temperature (LST) retrieved from remote sensing data. This paper focuses on an investigation of the minimum requirements of viewing angles to perform such normalizations on LST. The normally kernel-driven bi-directional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) is first extended to the thermal infrared (TIR) domain as TIR-BRDF model, and its uncertainty is shown to be less than 0.3 K when used to fit the hemispheric directional thermal radiation. A local optimum three-angle combination is found and verified using the TIR-BRDF model based on two patterns: the single-point pattern and the linear-array pattern. The TIR-BRDF is applied to an airborne multi-angular dataset to retrieve LST at nadir (Te-nadir) from different viewing directions, and the results show that this model can obtain reliable Te-nadir from 3 to 4 directional observations with large angle intervals, thus corresponding to large temperature angular variations. The Te-nadir is generally larger than temperature of the slant direction, with a difference of approximately 0.5-2.0 K for vegetated pixels and up to several Kelvins for non-vegetated pixels. This paper proposes a practical split-window algorithm (SWA) for retrieving land surface temperature (LST) from Landsat-8 Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) data. This SWA has a universal applicability and a set of parameters that can be applied when retrieving LSTs year-round. The atmospheric transmittance and the land surface emissivity (LSE), the essential SWA input parameters, of the Landsat-8 TIRS data are determined in this paper. We also analysed the error sensitivity of these SWA input parameters. The accuracy evaluation of the proposed SWA in this paper was conducted using the software MODTRAN 4.0. The root mean square error (RMSE) of the simulated LST using the mid-latitude summer atmospheric profile is 0.51 K, improving on the result of 0.93 K from Rozenstein (2014). Among the 90 simulated data points, the maximum absolute error is 0.99 °C, and the minimum absolute error is 0.02 °C. Under the Tropical model and 1976 US standard atmospheric conditions, the RMSE of the LST errors are 0.70 K and 0.63 K, respectively. The accuracy results indicate that the SWA provides an LST retrieval method that features not only high accuracy but also a certain universality. Additionally, the SWA was applied to retrieve the LST of an urban area using two Landsat-8 images. The Landsat program has been producing an archive of thermal imagery that spans the globe and covers 30 years of the thermal history of the planet at human scales (60-120 m). Most of that archive's absolute radiometric calibration has been fixed through vicarious calibration techniques. These calibration ties to trusted values have often taken a year or more to gather sufficient data and, in some cases, it has been over a decade before calibration certainty has been established. With temperature being such a critical factor for all living systems and the ongoing concern over the impacts of climate change, NASA and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) are leading efforts to provide timely and accurate temperature data from the Landsat thermal data archive. This paper discusses two closely related advances that are critical steps toward providing timely and reliable temperature image maps from Landsat. The first advance involves the development and testing of an autonomous procedure for gathering and performing initial screening of large amounts of vicarious calibration data. The second advance discussed in this paper is the per-pixel atmospheric compensation of the data to permit calculation of the emitted surface radiance (using ancillary sources of emissivity data) and the corresponding land surface temperature (LST). The analysis of the spatial and temporal characteristics of urban built-up area is conducive to the rational formulation of urban land use strategy, scientific planning and rational distribution of modern urban development. Based on the remote sensing data in four separate years (1999, 2004, 2010 and 2014), this research identified and inspected the urban built-up area boundary based on the temperature retrieval method. Combined with the second land investigation data and Google map data in Jingzhou, this paper used the qualitative and quantitative analysis methods to analyze the spatial-temporal characteristics of Jingzhou urban built-up area expansion over the past 15 years. The analysis shows that the entire spatial form of the urban built-up area has been evolving towards a compact and orderly state. On this basis, the urban area-population elasticity coefficient and algometric growth model were used to determine the reasonability of the urban sprawl. Incoming surface solar irradiance (SSI) is essential for calculating Earth's surface radiation budget and is a key parameter for terrestrial ecological modeling and climate change research. Remote sensing images from geostationary and polar-orbiting satellites provide an opportunity for SSI estimation through directly retrieving atmospheric and land-surface parameters. This paper presents a new scheme for estimating SSI from the visible and infrared channels of geostationary meteorological and polar-orbiting satellite data. Aerosol optical thickness and cloud microphysical parameters were retrieved from Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) system images by interpolating lookup tables of clear and cloudy skies, respectively. SSI was estimated using pre-calculated offline lookup tables with different atmospheric input data of clear and cloudy skies. The lookup tables were created via the comprehensive radiative transfer model, Santa Barbara Discrete Ordinate Radiative Transfer (SBDART), to balance computational efficiency and accuracy. The atmospheric attenuation effects considered in our approach were water vapor absorption and aerosol extinction for clear skies, while cloud parameters were the only atmospheric input for cloudy-sky SSI estimation. The approach was validated using one-year pyranometer measurements from seven stations in the SURFRAD (SURFace RADiation budget network). The results of the comparison for 2012 showed that the estimated SSI agreed with ground measurements with correlation coefficients of 0.94, 0.69, and 0.89 with a bias of 26.4 W/m-2, -5.9 W/m-2, and 14.9 W/m-2 for clear-sky, cloudy-sky, and all-sky conditions, respectively. The overall root mean square error (RMSE) of instantaneous SSI was 80.0 W/m-2 (16.8%), 127.6 W/m-2 (55.1%), and 99.5 W/m-2 (25.5%) for clear-sky, cloudy-sky (overcast sky and partly cloudy sky), and all-sky (clear-sky and cloudy-sky) conditions, respectively. A comparison with other state-of-the-art studies suggests that our proposed method can successfully estimate SSI with a maximum improvement of an RMSE of 24 W/m-2. The clear-sky SSI retrieval was sensitive to aerosol optical thickness, which was largely dependent on the diurnal surface reflectance accuracy. Uncertainty in the pre-defined horizontal visibility for 'clearest sky' will eventually lead to considerable SSI retrieval error. Compared to cloud effective radius, the retrieval error of cloud optical thickness was a primary factor that determined the SSI estimation accuracy for cloudy skies. Our proposed method can be used to estimate SSI for clear and one-layer cloud sky, but is not suitable for multi-layer clouds overlap conditions as a lower-level cloud cannot be detected by the optical sensor when a higher-level cloud has a higher optical thickness. Rugged terrain, including mountains, hills, and some high lands are typical land surfaces around the world. As a physical parameter for characterizing the anisotropic reflectance of the land surface, the importance of the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) has been gradually recognized in the remote sensing community, and great efforts have been dedicated to build BRDF models over various terrain types. However, on rugged terrain, the topography intensely affects the shape and magnitude of the BRDF and creates challenges in modeling the BRDF. In this paper, after a brief introduction of the theoretical background of the BRDF over rugged terrain, the status of estimating land surface BRDF properties over rugged terrain is comprehensively reviewed from a historical perspective and summarized in two categories: BRDFs describing solo slopes and those describing composite slopes. The discussion focuses on land surface reflectance retrieval over mountainous areas, the difference in solo slope and composite slope BRDF models, and suggested future research to improve the accuracy of BRDFs derived with remote sensing satellites. Lake Chad, located in the middle of the African Sahel belt, underwent dramatic decreases in the 1970s and 1980s leaving less than ten percent of its 1960s surface water extent as open water. In this paper, we present an extended record (dry seasons 1988-2016) of the total surface water area of the lake (including both open water and flooded vegetation) derived using Land Surface Temperature (LST) data (dry seasons 2000-2016) from the NASA Terra MODIS sensor and EUMETSAT Meteosat-based LST measurements (dry seasons 1988-2001) from an earlier study. We also examine the total surface water area for Lake Chad using radar data (dry seasons 2015-2016) from the ESA Sentinel-1a mission. For the limited number of radar data sets available to us (18 data sets), we find on average a close match between the estimates from these data and the corresponding estimates from LST, though we find spatial differences in the estimates using the two types of data. We use these spatial differences to adjust the record (dry seasons 2000-2016) from MODIS LST. Then we use the adjusted record to remove the bias of the existing LST record (dry seasons 1988-2001) derived from Meteosat measurements and combine the two records. From this composite, extended record, we plot the total surface water area of the lake for the dry seasons of 1988-1989 through 2016-2017. We find for the dry seasons of 1988-1989 to 2016-2017 that the maximum total surface water area of the lake was approximately 16,800 sq. km (February and May, 2000), the minimum total surface water area of the lake was approximately 6400 sq. km (November, 1990), and the average was approximately 12,700 sq. km. Further, we find the total surface water area of the lake to be highly variable during this period, with an average rate of increase of approximately 143 km² per year. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Interest has been growing with regard to the use of remote sensing data characterized by a fine spatial resolution and frequent coverage for the monitoring of land surface dynamics. However, current satellite sensors are fundamentally limited by a trade-off between their spatial and temporal resolutions. Spatiotemporal fusion thus provides a feasible solution to overcome this limitation, and many blending algorithms have been developed. Among them, the popular spatial and temporal adaptive reflectance fusion model (STARFM) is based on a weighted function; however, it uses an ad hoc approach to estimate the weights of surrounding similar pixels. Additionally, an uncertainty analysis of the predicted result is not provided in the STARFM or any other fusion algorithm. This paper proposes a rigorously-weighted spatiotemporal fusion model (RWSTFM) based on geostatistics to blend the surface reflectances of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery. The RWSTFM, which is based on ordinary kriging, derives the weights in terms of a fitted semivariance-distance relationship and calculates the estimation variance, which is a measure of the prediction uncertainty. The RWSTFM was tested using three datasets and compared with two commonly-used spatiotemporal reflectance fusion algorithms: the STARFM and the flexible spatiotemporal data fusion (FSDAF) method. The fusion results show that the proposed RWSTFM consistently outperformed the other algorithms both visually and quantitatively. To extract quantitative land information accurately and monitor the air pollution at city scale from moderate to high spatial resolution (MHSR) with a resolution no coarser than 30 m, optical remotely sensed imagery and aerosol parameters, especially aerosol optical depth (AOD), are a necessary step. In this paper, we introduce a new algorithm that can effectively estimate the spatial distribution of atmospheric aerosols and retrieve surface reflectance from moderate to high spatial resolution imagery under general atmosphere and land surface conditions. This algorithm has been improved in the following three aspects: (i) it has been developed for most of the moderate to high spatial resolution remotely sensed imagery; (ii) it can be applied to all kinds of land surface types including bright surface; and (iii) it is completely automatic. This algorithm is therefore suitable for operational applications. The derived AOD in Beijing from Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+), and Huan Jing 1 (HJ-1/CCD) data is validated with AErosol Robotic NETwork (AERONET) ground measurements at Beijng and Xianghe stations. The relationship between urban land surface material fractions (ULSMFs) and brightness temperature has long attracted attention in research on urban environments. In this paper, a multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis (MESMA) method was applied to extract vegetation-impervious surface-soil (V-I-S) fractions in each pixel, and the surface brightness temperature was derived by using the radiation in the upper atmosphere, on the basis of Landsat 8 images. Then, a clustering analysis, ternary triangular chart (TTC), and a multivariate statistical analysis were applied to ascertain the relationship between the fractions in each pixel and the land surface brightness temperature (LSBT). The hypsometric TTC, as well as the geographical distribution features of the LSBT, revealed that the changes in LSBT were associated with the high fractions of impervious surfaces (or vegetation), in addition to the temperature distribution differences across locations with varying land-cover types. The data fitting results showed that the comprehensive endmember fractions of V-I-S explained 98.6% of fluctuating LSBT, and the impervious surface fraction had a positive impact on the LSBT, whereas the fraction of vegetation had a negative impact on the LSBT.
