Abstract
The article discusses author Eric Foner's work on the book “Gateway to Freedom: The Hidden History of the Underground Railroad," which focuses on antislavery efforts in New York City from the early 18th century through the American Civil War. Topics addressed include Foner's use of the papers of abolitionist editor Sydney Howard Gay, as well as Foner's efforts to separate fact from fiction regarding the Underground Railroad.
