Transformer oil is widely used in high‐voltage transformers as a cooling and insulation medium. Electrical and thermal stresses expose transformer oil to degradation, which may produce dissolved decay products (DDPs) that are partially adsorbed on the insulation paper and accelerate the degradation of oil and paper. An evanescent field D‐shaped plastic optical fibre (POF) sensor was fabricated using the side‐polishing technique to detect DDPs in transformer oil. A laser light source and power meter were used in the prototype to measure the output power of the POF sensor. The measurement of DDPs was conducted on seven samples of insulating oil collected from the field. The sensor performance was evaluated based on different sensing areas, and the sensor sensitivity was measured. Results show an excellent correlation between the output power and DDPs. A correlation analysis was conducted amongst sensor output power, transformer oil refractive index and area under the absorbance curve. The performance of the sensor demonstrates improved linearity and sensitivity of 97.49% and 26.6779 µW/RIU, respectively. The measurement of water inside a transformer is essential to maintain its reliable operation, as the water content can increase as the transformer ages. This measurement is frequently performed by a utility as a part of its periodic maintenance activities. In this paper, the application of optical fiber sensors as an online method to measure water content of paper inside an operating transformer is presented. There are several advantages of using these sensors, including their size, lightweight, flexibility, multiplexing, no-electromagnetic interference, etc. A unique benefit of fiber optic technology is that sensors can be embedded into the winding structure and operate in areas of high electric field strength. For this work, fiber optic water and temperature sensors are investigated by comparing their measurements to a commercial water activity probe immersed in oil. The study found that the determination of water content by fiber optic sensors compared closely with other techniques, which lead to the conclusion that they can be an effective technology for water measurement in an operational transformer. Nowadays, reliability of power system is of great importance. Therefore, the condition of transformers as the expensive and critical components of a power system should be monitored and assessed. The dominant factor that causes limitation in transformers lifetime is the paper insulation. This paper aims to investigate the conspicuous influence of moisture content, especially in low oxygen and temperature on lifetime estimation under constant conditions, based on the results of previous experiments. Degree of polymerization (DP) is employed to quantify the effects of detrimental parameters with respect to their time-varying nature. This paper proposes a novel lifetime estimation-approach considering a yearly moisture growth for transformers. The results indicate different trend of DP profiles, which lead to an accurate lifetime estimation in comparison with DP obtained through ideal conditions. Furthermore, oscillations in the hot-spot temperature of transformers are demonstrated to have a negative effect on the lifetime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mechanical strength of insulation paper was the key factor for the life of large oil-immersed transformer. To more accurately assess the life of the insulation paper, the aging mechanisms of transformer insulation paper were analysed and a new method using the activation energy was proposed to access the paper's life. Then the life prediction model was defined. Accelerated aging tests of transformer oil-paper insulation samples were executed under different temperatures. According to the test results, the parameters of life prediction model were found out. So, the life of insulation paper under the working condition could be calculated. The application of vibration-based condition monitoring methods to power transformers has shown the potential for detecting mechanical transformer failures. The ageing of winding insulation paper, which is a common problem in long-serving power transformers, affects both the electrical and mechanical strength of the windings. This paper is concerned with the vibration features of winding disks with aged insulation paper. The vibration characteristics of single-layer winding disks wrapped with insulation paper are investigated. By examining the vibration frequency responses of winding disks with different degrees of ageing of insulation paper, the effects of aged paper on the vibration behaviors of winding disks are demonstrated. The experimental results show that changes in the vibration responses of winding disks can be related to the ageing of insulation paper, and thus it is possible to detect this failure mode in a power transformer using a vibration-based method. A qualitative explanation for these changes is presented, using the degradation of the mechanical strength of the insulation paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The degradation of oil-impregnated paper induced by partial discharge (PD) seriously affects the life of power equipment. In order to investigate the relationship between partial discharge and the degradation of oil-impregnated paper, PD characteristics and trap parameters of the impregnated paper are measured. In this work, a cavity discharge model is adopted and samples with different degrees of polymerization (DP) are fabricated using thermally accelerated aging to simulate transformers with different lifetimes. For each sample, phase resolved partial discharge (PRPD) spectrograms are recorded for various partial discharge times. The characteristics of partial discharge are analyzed, and the trap parameters of specimens are obtained by the thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) method. Following this, the microstructures of the samples are observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). It is found that the damaging breakdown process of oil-immersed paper can be divided into three stages: initial stage, developing stage and pre-breakdown stage. There also exist two levels of trap on the surface of oil-impregnated paper: shallow (0.10-0.59 eV) and relatively deep (0.60-0.90 eV) energy. Importantly, the thermal aging makes the trap energy deeper while electrical aging makes the trap energy shallower. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Heretofore, unlike HVAC transformers, there is not much experience in both insulation design guides and test methods for ultra HV converter transformers. This special insulation phenomenon is very prominent due to the complication of voltage applied on valve-side windings of converter transformers. There is a severe lack of empirical research on partial discharge in oil-paper insulation under the combined ACDC voltage. The study in this paper provides a timely research into the issues. Nine possible configurations, which intent to simulate different defects in the transformer, have been investigated. The PD inception voltages varied ratios of combined AC-DC voltages were conducted. The discharge magnitude and its relation with the applied voltage for selected four common configurations were obtained during voltage increasing and decreasing respectively, which presented the PD initiating process and also reflected the insulation behavior of dielectrics. Besides, the Finite Element Analysis Soft was used to propose the effect of morphology of electrode surface (3 dimensional roughness is approximately 0.03 mm) on PD characteristics, which is very lacking in the previous references. Managing a large fleet of ageing assets has become a technical challenge faced by many electricity utilities in developed countries. Asset managers are increasingly interested in techniques that can help extend the useful lifetime of a transformer. Oil regeneration is one of such techniques. In this paper, oil regeneration experiments were performed on a 6.4/0.4 kV retired distribution transformer to investigate the effect of oil regeneration on improving paper conditions. Oil regeneration was conducted in two stages, with the first stage aimed at 'cleaning the oil' and the second stage targeted at 'cleaning the paper'. Oil samples were collected at regular intervals throughout the process and paper samples were obtained from the transformer before and after each oil regeneration stage. It was found that oil regeneration restores oil parameters, including moisture and acidity, similar to those of new oils at the end of stage 1. Analysis of paper samples indicated a reduction in paper moisture at the end of stage 2 by nearly 40%, while low molecular weight acids (LMA) in paper exhibited a reduction by around 30% on average. It is found that the extended oil regeneration period, i.e., stage 2, is necessary to improve the paper condition and hence to reduce the paper ageing rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
