In many areas, such as speech processing, communication, and measurement systems, where the actual signal is not directly available, Wiener deconvolution is a widely used signal restoration technique. The accuracy of the estimated signal in Wiener deconvolution is determined by the unknown filter parameter. To compute this unknown parameter, complex and time-consuming numerical as well as iterative computation approaches were proposed in the literature, which also often compute an unoptimized unknown filter parameter. To address the computational problem and estimate a more accurate unknown filter parameter, the authors reported an analytical solution in a prior work for a given signal to noise ratio. However, it was revealed that the actual optimum parameter value also varies with noise also. In this paper, the authors propose a new analytical solution for optimum parameter estimation that includes noise as well. The authors compared the modified analytical solution to existing numerical computation methods for different values of Signal to Noise Ratio and demonstrated that the proposed methods’ optimum parameter estimation is always close to the actual optimum value, which resulted in more accurate signal deconvolution. This paper proposes the Modified Light GBM to classify the Malicious Users (MUs) and legitimate Secondary Users (SUs) in the cognitive-radio network. The proposed method is to avoid the consequences of malicious users in Cooperative Spectrum Sensing (CSS) without the detection of MUs. The method is tested against the occurrence of Always No Malicious User (ANMU), always yes malicious user (AYMU), the Random Malicious User (RMU), and Opposite Malicious User (OMU) transmitting spectrum sensing data to the Fusion Center (FC) by normal secondary users. A new composite model called shadowed Beaulieu-Xie (BX) is used in terahertz and millimeter-wave wireless communication systems. This model characterizes an environment with an arbitrary number of non-line-of-sight and line-of-sight signals. In this paper, an analysis of the average bit error rate (ABER) is done. The analysis is carried out for different coherent and non-coherent modulation techniques. The mathematical expressions of ABER are obtained using the probability density function of the output signal to noise ratio of the shadowed BX fading channel. A new closed-form ABER expression for gray-coded rectangular quadrature amplitude modulation over the shadowed BX channel is also evaluated. In wireless networks, the link connectivity may be intermittent due to shadowing, burstiness of data arrival, or uncoordinated resource allocation. In this paper, we model the intermittence of links as Bernoulli distributed random channel states, termed intermittence channel states, and study the impact of the corresponding channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) in a two-user Gaussian broadcast channel (BC). Moreover, due to the heterogeneous timeliness of intermittence channel states, the CSIT considered in this paper is hybrid. More specifically, the CSIT of each link can be perfectly (causally or non-causally) available, delayed, or not available. When the links are connected, we adopt a general setting that the received signal-to-noise ratios can be different. Our contribution is the characterization of the capacity regions of intermittent Gaussian BC to within bounded gaps for all combinations of hybrid CSIT, except for scenario DN (delayed CSIT of receiver 1, no CSIT of receiver 2). For scenario DN, we propose an opportunistic physical layer network coding scheme that achieves a strictly larger degree-of-freedom (DoF) region than the no-CSIT DoF region. As a corollary, single-user CSIT is able to increase the sum DoF for intermittent Gaussian BC (also the capacity region for the erasure BC, as a by-product). This result is in sharp contrast to the recent negative result by Davoodi and Jafar, where it is shown that for fast-fading multiple-input single-output BC with continuous channel states, single-user CSIT does not help at all in terms of sum DoF. It is well known that the variances of the least squares estimates are large and they can be far away from their true values in the case of multicollinearity. Therefore, the ridge regression method can be used as an alternative to the least squares method. However, the ridge estimator has a disadvantage that its distribution is unknown, so only asymptotic confidence intervals are obtained. The purpose of this paper is to study the impact of several ridge regularization parameters on the mean interval lengths of the confidence intervals and coverage probabilities constructed by the ridge estimator. A bootstrap method for the selection of ridge regularization parameter is used as well as the parametric methods. In order to compare the confidence intervals, standard normal approximation, student-t approximation and bootstrap methods are used and comparison is illustrated via real data and simulation study. The simulation study shows that the bootstrap choice of ridge regularization parameter yields narrower standard normal approximated confidence intervals than the PRESS choice of ridge regularization parameter but wider standard normal approximated, student-t approximated and bootstrap confidence intervals than the GCV choice of ridge regularization parameter. In order to improve the problem of poor signal separation and large deviation in the process of sea level height inversion, this paper proposes a new method of sea level height inversion based on Gaussian multipeak fitting + sliding window, which can obtain high-quality signal-to-noise ratio sequence. The SNR (signal to noise ratio) of BDS (Beidou Navigation Satellite System) satellite B2, B6 and B7 bands at MAYG station was selected to invert the sea level height by Gaussian multi-peak fitting + sliding window method, and the inversion results of polynomial and wavelet filtering methods and tide station data were compared and verified. The results show that the accuracy of Gaussian fitting inversion results is 29 % and 19 % higher than that of polynomial and wavelet filtering methods, respectively, and the correlation is better. After combining the sliding window, the effective point of the inversion result is increased to 4.5 times before the windowing, and the time resolution is greatly improved. Compared with the single-frequency data inversion results, the effective point of the joint multi-frequency data inversion results is increased by more than 3 times, and the resolution is further improved while ensuring the accuracy. The results show that the GNSS-R(global navigation satellite system reflectometry) sea level height inversion method combining Gaussian fitting and sliding window can better reflect the sea level height. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly applied to surveillance tasks, thanks to their excellent mobility and flexibility. Different from existing works using UAVs for video surveillance, this paper employs a UAV team to carry out collaborative radio surveillance on ground moving nodes and disguise the purpose of surveillance. We consider two aspects of disguise. The first is that the UAVs do not communicate with each other (or the ground nodes can notice), and each UAV plans its trajectory in a decentralized way. The other aspect of disguise is that the UAVs avoid being noticed by the nodes for which a metric quantifying the disguising performance is adopted. We present a new decentralized method for the online trajectory planning of the UAVs, which maximizes the disguising metric while maintaining uninterrupted surveillance and avoiding UAV collisions. Based on the model predictive control (MPC) technique, our method allows each UAV to separately estimate the locations of the UAVs and the ground nodes, and decide its trajectory accordingly. The impact of potential estimation errors is mitigated by incorporating the error bounds into the online trajectory planning, hence achieving a robust control of the trajectories. Computer-based simulation results demonstrate that the developed strategy ensures the surveillance requirement without losing disguising performance, and outperforms existing alternatives. Note to Practitioners—The paper is motivated by the covertness requirement in the radio surveillance (also called eavesdropping) by UAVs. In some situations, the UAV user (such as the police department) wishes to disguise the surveillance intention from the targets, and the trajectories of UAVs play a significant role in the disguising. However, the typical UAV trajectories such as standoff tracking and orbiting can easily be noticed by the targets. Considering this gap, we focus on how to plan the UAVs’ trajectories so that they are less noticeable while conducting effective eavesdropping. We formulate a path planning problem aiming at maximizing a disguising metric, which measures the magnitude of the relative position change between a UAV and a target. A decentralized method is proposed for the online trajectory planning of the UAVs based on MPC, and its robust version is also presented to account for the uncertainty in the estimation and prediction of the nodes’ states. This study is motivated by the fact that localization in millimeter wave(mmWave) Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication becomes a more critical problem because both the terminals of the communication link are in motion. The positional awareness merely based on GPS or local sensors has an error margin of around 10 meters, which can worsen in uncertain real-time conditions such as road topology and highway traffic. The paper analyses the relation between vehicle dynamics, beamforming, and beam alignment for highly directive antennas. When the subsystem models presented in this paper are taken into consideration, the joint vehicle dynamics-beamforming approach will optimize the link connectivity and SNR. The vehicle dynamics model is designed to be more realistic considering the non-linear acceleration based on the throttle-brake jerks due to induced noises. The Unscented Kalman Filter based prediction subsystem predicts the alignment values even during non-linear acceleration and jerks. This paper presents a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-assisted full-duplex (FD) cooperative spectrum sharing protocol to achieve full-rate at a cell-edge primary user, where the secondary receiver helps the primary network relay the information to the cell-edge primary user. Unlike other FD cooperative schemes, the FD relay in the proposed system is not transmitting while receiving symbols from the primary transmitter. Hence, the proposed scheme can achieve full-rate at a primary user without degrading its outage performance. Further, it guarantees every alternate time-slots to the secondary network for accessing the licensed spectrum by employing a secondary receiver as a cooperative relay. In this paper, we derive the analytical expression for the outage probability and ergodic capacity. Moreover, we validate the derived expression through simulation and asymptotic results. In concurrent spectrum sharing scenarios between radars and wireless communication systems, one strict approach to protect the radar from undesired interference is locating the base stations outside a guard (or exclusion) zone of the radar. As a result, users inside that zone experience bad communication coverage. This paper uses Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) to improve the base station coverage of users in the radar exclusion zone. The paper shows, through analysis and simulation, that joint optimization of base station and RIS locations improves the probability of coverage in the exclusion zone over the shared spectrum without disturbing the radar operation. In the scalar dirty multiple-access channel, in addition to Gaussian noise, two additive interference signals are present, each known non-causally to a single transmitter. It was shown by Philosof et al. that for strong interferences, an independent identically distributed ensemble of codes does not achieve the capacity region. Rather, a structured-codes approach was presented that was shown to be optimal in the limit of high signal-to-noise ratios, where the sum capacity is dictated by the minimal (“bottleneck”) channel gain. In this paper, we consider the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) variant of this setting. In order to incorporate structured codes in this case, one can utilize matrix decompositions that transform the channel into effective parallel scalar dirty multiple-access channels. This approach, however, suffers from a “bottleneck” effect for each effective scalar channel and, therefore, the achievable rates strongly depend on the chosen decomposition. It is shown that a recently proposed decomposition, where the diagonals of the effective channel matrices are equal up to a scaling factor, is optimal at high signal-to-noise ratios, under an equal rank assumption. In this paper, two different timing-mismatch compensation strategies for two-channel time-interleaved analog-to-digital converters are comprehensively analyzed and compared. In the first strategy (SA), one channel serves as a reference channel, and the other channel is compensated to match the reference channel using the timing mismatch between the channels. In the second strategy (SB), both channels are compensated to match each other, using half the value of the channel mismatch with different signs. For SB, the paper introduces a novel compensation structure that utilizes parallel differentiator-multiplier (PDM) branches. Expressions for the spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) after compensation are derived for both strategies. These expressions reveal that the novel PDM structure achieves a remarkably greater SFDR than the existing cascaded differentiator-multiplier (CDM) compensation structure which can be used for both SA and SB. This is because, after compensation, the remaining aliasing distortion in the proposed PDM structure is shown to be of higher approximation order (in terms of the mismatch value) and thus substantially smaller than in the CDM structure. In this study, we investigate the operation of a user-number threshold-based base station (BS) on/off control, in which the BS turns off when the number of users is less than a specific threshold value. This paper presents a space-based analysis of the BS on/off control system to which a stochastic geometric approach is applied. In particular, we derive the approximated closed-form expression of the coverage probability of a homogeneous network (HomNet) with the user-number threshold-based BS on/off control. Moreover, the optimal user-number threshold for maximizing coverage probability is analytically derived. In addition to HomNet, we also derive the approximated closed-form expression of the coverage probability and the optimal user-number thresholds for a heterogeneous network (HetNet). The results show that HetNet, the analysis of which seems intractable, can be analyzed in the form of a linear combination of HomNets with weighted densities. In addition, the optimal user-number threshold of each tier is obtained independently from other tiers. The modeling and analysis presented in this paper are not only limited to the case of user-number threshold-based on/off control, but also applicable to other novel on/off controls with minor modifications. Different from conventional wired line connections, industrial control through wireless transmission is widely regarded as a promising solution due to its reduced cost, increased long-term reliability, and enhanced reliability. However, mission-critical applications impose stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements that entail ultra-reliability low-latency communications (URLLC). The primary feature of URLLC is that the blocklength of channel codes is short, and the conventional Shannon’s Capacity is not applicable. In this paper, we consider the URLLC in a factory automation (FA) scenario. Due to densely deployed equipment in FA, wireless signal are easily blocked by the obstacles. To address this issue, we propose to deploy intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to create an alternative transmission link, which can enhance the transmission reliability. In this paper, we focus on the performance analysis for IRS-aided URLLC-enabled communications in a FA scenario. Both the average data rate (ADR) and the average decoding error probability (ADEP) are derived under finite channel blocklength for seven cases: 1) Rayleigh fading channel; 2) With direct channel link; 3) Nakagami-m fading channel; 4) Imperfect phase alignment; 5) Multiple-IRS case; 6) Rician fading channel; 7) Correlated channels. This paper proposes a novel bit loading algorithm to multicarrier non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems to maximize the system total throughput while satisfying the users’ individual quality of service (QoS) constraints. Although bit loading is generally a non-deterministic polynomial-time (NP)-hard problem, even for orthogonal multiple access (OMA), the mutual interference between the users, and the dependence of power coefficients and modulation orders are additional challenges that add substantial complexity to the optimization problem. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an efficient bit loading algorithm for multicarrier NOMA systems and compare the complexity and throughput with a corresponding OMA system. The obtained results show that for the case of NOMA, bit loading provides an additional degree of freedom that allows non-uniform spectrum sharing among the users. In particular scenarios, the system may experience hybrid modes of operation, where the system switches between NOMA and OMA. The obtained numerical results show that NOMA can outperform OMA by 100% in terms of spectral efficiency, for a two-user scenario. The complexity of the loading process for NOMA is noticeably higher than OMA, which is due to the high complexity associated with the bit error rate (BER) computation in the case of NOMA. This paper proposes a novel scalable reinforcement learning approach for simultaneous routing and spectrum access in wireless ad-hoc networks. In most previous works on reinforcement learning for network optimization, the network topology is assumed to be fixed, and a different agent is trained for each transmission node—this limits scalability and generalizability. Further, routing and spectrum access are typically treated as separate tasks. Moreover, the optimization objective is usually a cumulative metric along the route, e.g., number of hops or delay. In this paper, we account for the physical-layer signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) in a wireless network and further show that bottleneck objective such as the minimum SINR along the route can also be optimized effectively using reinforcement learning. Specifically, we propose a scalable approach in which a single agent is associated with each flow and makes routing and spectrum access decisions as it moves along the frontier nodes. The agent is trained according to the physical-layer characteristics of the environment using a novel rewarding scheme based on the Monte Carlo estimation of the future bottleneck SINR. It learns to avoid interference by intelligently making joint routing and spectrum allocation decisions based on the geographical location information of the neighbouring nodes. This paper considers the $\mathscr{L}_{2}$ string stability analysis and controller synthesis for vehicle platooning under jamming attacks and interferences from other communication channels. Jamming attacks and interferences for vehicle platooning systems are modeled as periodic denial of service attacks. Further, the vehicle platooning with denial of service attacks is modeled as a distributed switching system where an average dwell time approach is adopted for the stability analysis. Under the distributed switching system framework, this paper presents a co-design paradigm for the vehicle platooning. The distributed event-triggered method (ETM) and controllers are presented to guarantee $\mathscr{L}_{2}$ string stability, which can ensure that the output cannot be amplified along the vehicle platooning. Sufficient conditions for $\mathscr{L}_{2}$ string stability are then provided to guide the co-design of the ETM and controllers, which can be efficiently obtained by solving LMIs. As a noise-enhanced signal processing method, stochastic resonance has been widely applied in the field of condition detection and fault diagnosis. To further consummate the application of stochastic resonance in practical engineering, a high-dimensional space model based on coupled bistable stochastic resonance system is proposed in this paper. Firstly, taking the three-dimensional space coupled bistable stochastic resonance system as the research object, the influence of system parameters on the output signal-to-noise ratio is analyzed. Then, the output signal-to-noise ratio of the high-dimensional space coupled bistable stochastic resonance system are analyzed in different dimensions. It is found that the output signals of these coupling ends with the same system parameters are identical, and there is always an optimal dimension for a given input so that the output signal-to-noise ratio reaches the maximum. Moreover, simulation results indicate that the proposed model has good feature enhancement ability and anti-noise robustness. Finally, the proposed approach is employed to diagnose fault signals of two different bearing types. The optimal output of the system is determined by establishing the best dimension value. The bigger output signal-to-noise ratio demonstrates that the proposed method outperforms the one-dimensional bistable stochastic resonance and two-dimensional coupled bistable stochastic resonance in weak fault signal detection, which improves the engineering practicability of stochastic resonance theory. In this paper, we study the estimation of a rank-one spiked tensor in the presence of heavy tailed noise. Our results highlight some of the fundamental similarities and differences in the tradeoff between statistical and computational efficiencies under heavy tailed and Gaussian noise. In particular, we show that, for $p$ th order tensors, the tradeoff manifests in an identical fashion as the Gaussian case when the noise has finite $4(p-1)$ th moment. The difference in signal strength requirements, with or without computational constraints, for us to estimate the singular vectors at the optimal rate, interestingly, narrows for noise with heavier tails and vanishes when the noise only has finite fourth moment. Moreover, if the noise has less than fourth moment, tensor SVD, perhaps the most natural approach, is suboptimal even though it is computationally intractable. Our analysis exploits a close connection between estimating the rank-one spikes and the spectral norm of a random tensor with iid entries. In particular, we show that the order of the spectral norm of a random tensor can be precisely characterized by the moment of its entries, generalizing classical results for random matrices. In addition to the theoretical guarantees, we propose estimation procedures for the heavy tailed regime, which are easy to implement and efficient to run. Powerful solar storms emit plasma that may travel towards the earth. Interactions between the plasma and the earth magnetic field cause geomagnetic disturbances (GMDs), which in turn induce quasi-dc voltage along long conductors in power systems. The induced electric field can be calculated by magnetic field data measured by magnetometers at several stations. In this paper, a set of online processing methods are proposed to improve signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the calculated electric field signals. In the first step, magnetic field signals are denoised inside a sliding window by a wavelet transform. The sliding window width is optimized and the introduced transients are compensated. Time derivative of magnetic field signals are estimated by a continuous wavelet transform in the next step, and the size of the sliding window is minimized for optimal computational speed. Ultimately, a method is proposed to further enhance the SNR by updating the previously processed data points. The magnetic and electric field signals obtained by the online and offline processing methods are compared with each other. It is demonstrated that the online processing methods can decrease the noises to a level comparable to that obtained by the offline methods. Uplink-downlink duality refers to the fact that under a sum-power constraint, the capacity regions of a Gaussian multiple-access channel and a Gaussian broadcast channel with Hermitian transposed channel matrices are identical. This paper generalizes this result to a cooperative cellular network, in which remote access-points are deployed as relays in serving the users under the coordination of a central processor (CP). In this model, the users and the relays are connected over noisy wireless links, while the relays and the CP are connected over noiseless but rate-limited fronthaul links. Based on a Lagrangian technique, this paper establishes a duality relationship between such a multiple-access relay channel and broadcast relay channel, under the assumption that the relays use compression-based strategies. Specifically, we show that under the same total transmit power constraint and individual fronthaul rate constraints, the achievable rate regions of the Gaussian multiple-access and broadcast relay channels are identical, when either independent compression or Wyner-Ziv and multivariate compression strategies are used. The key observations are that if the beamforming vectors at the relays are fixed, the sum-power minimization problems under the achievable rate and fronthaul constraints in both the uplink and the downlink can be transformed into either a linear programming or a semidefinite programming problem depending on the compression technique, and that the uplink and downlink problems are Lagrangian duals of each other. Moreover, the dual variables corresponding to the downlink rate constraints become the uplink powers; the dual variables corresponding to the downlink fronthaul constraints become the uplink quantization noises. In steady-state visual-evoked potential (SSVEP) based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), existing detection algorithms utilizing spatial filters like task-related component analysis (TRCA) derive the spatial filters mainly through maximizing the inter-trial similarity between the combined signals over the training set. Although they achieve by far the best classification performance in SSVEP-based BCIs, some important problems are still unresolved. Especially, the mechanism of how spatial filters cancel the background noise in brain signals and optimize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of SSVEPs is still not figured out. Therefore, to solve these problems, in this paper a new perspective of spatial filter design is proposed. Specifically, a linear generative signal model of SSVEP is adopted and the spatial filters are obtained automatically through maximum likelihood estimation of source signals and channel vectors. In the same time, the relation between maximum likelihood estimation and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) maximization is discussed. Through a step-by-step formulation, this paper provides a theoretical justification for those conventional algorithms utilizing spatial filters. As for the classification performance, the proposed scheme is tested on a benchmark dataset of 35 subjects. Experiment results show that the classification performance of the proposed scheme is competitive against three benchmark algorithms, which include TRCA. Especially, the proposed scheme achieves a fair performance improvement over the benchmark methods in the cases where a shorter time window, or a larger number of electrodes, or a smaller number of training blocks are adopted. This paper proposes a high-speed deterministic digital technique to calibrate the errors due to capacitance mismatch and finite op-amp gain. Unlike other calibration techniques, this technique requires neither forcing the inputs of the intermediate stages being calibrated to exact voltages, nor reducing the gains of each stage to avoid saturation of output digital codes. A 1.5 bits/stage, 10 stages, 9 bits pipeline ADC with the three most significant stages calibrated is demonstrated in this paper. For a 10% mismatch in capacitances in the 3 MSB stages of the pipelined ADC, the calibration technique improved SNDR by more than 20 dB and SFDR by around 27 dB. The technique can also be slightly modified to calibrate algorithmic ADCs. For a 7% mismatch in capacitances of the algorithmic ADC, the proposed calibration technique improved SNDR by 18 dB and SFDR by around 28 dB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, an antenna synthesis process is investigated for Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) application. The wireless communication between Road Side Units (RSUs) and On Board Units (OBUs) located in the vehicles enables smart mobility. However, to support high speed vehicles and high data rates, a wider coverage area by the RSU antennas projected on the highway is required. This is defined by the radiation patterns of the RSU antennas. On a multi-lane highway, interference from the adjacent lanes is a critical issue which determines the communication reliability in terms of Single-to-Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR). Hence, in this paper, an interference-aware antenna synthesis process is proposed and a planar array is optimized based on the objective function of obtaining a wide coverage area in terms of SINR distribution for a given modulation scheme. The proposed antenna array enhances the reliable communication area and provides improved SINR distribution across the lane for misaligned vehicles from the center of the lane. Intelligent transport systems (ITS) rely upon the connectivity, cooperation and automation of vehicles aimed at the improvement of safety and efficiency of the transport system. Connectivity, which is a key component for the practical implementation of vehicular light communications (VeLC) systems in ITS, must be carefully studied prior to design and implementation. In this paper, we carry out a performance evaluation study on the use of different vehicle taillights (TLs) as the transmitters in a VeLC system. We show that, the transmission coverage field of view and the link span depend on TLs illumination patterns and the transmit power levels, respectively, which fail to meet the typical communication distances in vehicular environments. This paper proposes an infrared-based VeLC system to meet the transmission range in daytimes under Sunlight noise. We show that, at the forward error correction bit error rate limit of 3.8 × 10−3, the communication distances of the proposed link are 63, 72, and > 89 m compared with 4.5, 5.4 and 6.3 m for BMW's vehicle TL at data rates of 10, 6, and 2 Mbps, respectively. This paper derives the asymptotic distribution of the normalized $k$ -th maximum order statistics of a sequence of non-central chi-square random variables with non-identical non-centrality parameters. We demonstrate the utility of these results in characterizing the signal-to-noise ratio in three different applications in wireless communication systems where the statistics of the $k$ -th maximum channel power over Rician fading links are of interest. Furthermore, we derive simple expressions for the asymptotic outage probability, average throughput, achievable throughput, and average bit error probability. In conventional multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems with frequency division duplexing (FDD), channel acquisition and precoder optimization processes have been designed separately although they are highly coupled. This paper studies an end-to-end design of downlink MU-MIMO systems which include pilot sequences, limited feedback, and precoding. To address this problem, we propose a novel deep learning (DL) framework which jointly optimizes the feedback information generation at users and the precoder design at a base station (BS). Each procedure in the MU-MIMO systems is replaced by intelligently designed multiple deep neural networks (DNN) units. At the BS, a neural network generates pilot sequences and helps the users obtain accurate channel state information. At each user, the channel feedback operation is carried out in a distributed manner by an individual user DNN. Then, another BS DNN collects feedback information from the users and determines the MIMO precoding matrices. A joint training algorithm is proposed to optimize all DNN units in an end-to-end manner. In addition, a training strategy which can avoid retraining for different network sizes for a scalable design is proposed. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is regarded as a promising technology with great potential to boost wireless networks. Affected by the “double fading” effect, however, conventional passive RIS cannot bring considerable performance improvement when users are not close enough to RIS. Recently, active RIS is introduced to combat the double fading effect by actively amplifying incident signals with the aid of integrated reflection-type amplifiers. In order to reduce the hardware cost and energy consumption due to massive active components in the conventional fully-connected active RIS, a novel hardware-and-energy efficient sub-connected active RIS architecture has been proposed recently, in which multiple reconfigurable electromagnetic elements are driven by only one amplifier. In this paper, we first develop an improved and accurate signal model for the sub-connected active RIS architecture. Then, we investigate the joint transmit precoding and RIS reflection beamforming (i.e., the reflection phase-shift and amplification coefficients) designs in multiuser multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) communication systems. Both sum-rate maximization and power minimization problems are solved by leveraging fractional programming (FP), block coordinate descent (BCD), second-order cone programming (SOCP), alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), and majorization-minimization (MM) methods. Extensive simulation results verify that compared with the conventional fully-connected structure, the proposed sub-connected active RIS can significantly reduce the hardware cost and power consumption, and achieve great performance improvement when power budget at RIS is limited. The successive cancellation (SC) process in which symbols are decoded sequentially by processing some intermediate information is an essential component of various decoding algorithms used for polar codes and their variants. In some decoding schemes, we may need to redo this process from some specific symbol or from the first symbol. This operation is called rewinding. Rewinding the SC process seems trivial if we have access to all intermediate log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) and partial sums. However, as the block length increases, retaining all of the intermediate information becomes inefficient and impractical. Rewinding the SC process in a memory-efficient way is a problem that we address in this paper. As we store a fraction of all the intermediate information in the memory-efficient scheme, we may not be able to rewind the SC process to the target symbol index. The reason is that some of the stored intermediate information needed to decode the target symbol may have been overwritten. To recompute the lost information, we may need to rewind the process further. Before proposing the formal scheme for the rewinding process, we explore the known properties of the SC process based on the binary representation of the bit indices. Then, we introduce a new operator used for grouping the bit indices. This special grouping helps us in finding the closest bit index to the target index for rewinding. We also analytically prove that this approach gives access to the untouched intermediate information stored in the memory which is essential in resuming the SC process. Finally, we adapt the proposed approach to multiple rewinds and apply it to SC-flip decoding and shifted-pruning-based list decoding. The numerical evaluation of the proposed solution shows a significant reduction of ≥50% in the complexity of the additional decoding attempts at medium and high SNR regimes for SC-flip decoding and less for shifted-pruning based list decoding. The use of 1-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) is seen as a promising approach to significantly reduce the power consumption and hardware cost of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receivers. However, the nonlinear distortion due to 1-bit quantization fundamentally changes the optimal communication strategy and also imposes a capacity penalty to the system. In this paper, the capacity of a Gaussian MIMO channel in which the antenna outputs are processed by an analog linear combiner and then quantized by a set of zero threshold ADCs is studied. A new capacity upper bound for the zero threshold case is established that is tighter than the bounds available in the literature. In addition, we propose an achievability scheme which configures the analog combiner to create parallel Gaussian channels with phase quantization at the output. Under this class of analog combiners, an algorithm is presented that identifies the analog combiner and input distribution that maximize the achievable rate. Numerical results are provided showing that the rate of the achievability scheme is tight in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. Finally, a new 1-bit MIMO receiver architecture which employs analog temporal and spatial processing is proposed. The proposed receiver attains the capacity in the high SNR regime. The existing relay-assisted terahertz (THz) wireless system is limited to dual-hop transmission with pointing errors and short-term fading without considering the shadowing effect. This paper analyzes the performance of a multihop-assisted backhaul communication mixed with an access link under the shadowed fading with antenna misalignment errors. We derive novel probability density and distribution functions of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the multihop link employing channel-assisted (CA) and fixed-gain (FG) amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying for each hop by considering independent but not identically distributed (i.ni.d) $\alpha $ - $\mu $ fading channel with pointing errors. We present analytical expressions for the outage probability and average bit-error-rate (ABER) and develop asymptotic analysis in high SNR regime to derive the diversity order for both CA-multihop and FG-multihop backhaul links. We use the derived results of the multihop systems to analyze the statistical performance of the integrated backhaul-access relaying for both uplink and downlink transmission considering the generalized- $K$ shadowed fading model in the access link. We also present exact and asymptotic expressions of the outage probability for the considered mixed system. Covert communications is critical in many application scenarios for ensuring transmission security and privacy. Two-way protocols are widely adopted in intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted relaying networks to enable covert communications and prevent wireless signals from being overheard. To quantify the performance of covert communications in this special scenario, we derive the closed-form expression of outage probability and its asymptote in this paper. Considering the worst-case of covert communications, the optimal normalized power threshold of warden's detector is analyzed under a complex Gaussian distribution approximation. To meet the requirement of the detection error probability, the ratio of the transmission power between the covert nodes is investigated. This paper considers the downlink of an ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) system in which a base station (BS) serves multiple single-antenna users in the short (finite) blocklength (FBL) regime with the assistance of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). In the FBL regime, the users' achievable rates are complex functions of the beamforming vectors and of the RIS's programmable reflecting elements (PREs). We propose the joint design of the transmit beamformers and PREs to maximize the geometric mean (GM) of these rates (GM-rate) and show that this approach provides fair rate distribution and thus reliable links to all users. Direction-of-arrival (DOA) information is vital for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems to complete localization and beamforming tasks. Switched antenna arrays have recently emerged as an effective solution to reduce the cost and power consumption of MIMO systems. Switch-based array architectures connect a limited number of radio frequency chains to a subset of the antenna elements forming a subarray. This paper addresses the problem of antenna selection to optimize DOA estimation performance. We first perform a subarray layout alignment process to remove subarrays with identical beampatterns and create a unique subarray set. By using this set, and based on a DOA threshold region performance approximation, we propose two antenna selection algorithms; a greedy algorithm and a deep-learning-based algorithm. The performance of the proposed algorithms is evaluated numerically. The availability of LED-based headlights and taillights makes possible the use of visible light communication (VLC) as a wireless access technology for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications. A critical concern to establish a reliable VLC link between two moving vehicles is the number of photodetectors and their locations on the destination vehicle. In this paper, we experimentally investigate the usage of dual photodetectors for a vehicular VLC system with selection combining to enhance signal reception in mobile conditions. We measure the electrical receive signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for each individual photodetector as well as at the output of selection combiner in two different tracks involving straight and curved roads. Through data fitting to experimental data, we obtain a probability density function (PDF) to describe the instantaneous SNR. Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) is an emerging flexible and powerful multiple access for downlink multi-antenna networks. In this paper, we introduce the concept of RSMA into short-packet downlink communications. We design optimal linear precoders that maximize the sum rate with Finite Blocklength (FBL) constraints. The relations between the sum rate and blocklength of RSMA are investigated for a wide range of network loads and user deployments. Numerical results demonstrate that RSMA can achieve the same transmission rate as Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) and Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) with smaller blocklengths (and therefore lower latency), especially in overloaded multi-antenna networks. With low-cost energy consumption, the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technique is a potential solution to the real-time data processing for intelligent transportation systems (ITSs). In this paper, an intelligent transmissive surface is introduced into the vehicular communications, enabling vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) signals to penetrate the intelligent RIS to access the base station (BS) on the opposite side of the vehicle. Considering that the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication reuses the spectrum spanned for V2I link, we investigate the ergodic capacity optimization problem for the vehicle performing V2I communications with the assistance of RIS, while meeting the low-latency and high-reliability requirements of the V2V link. The RIS transmission coefficients and power allocation of vehicles are jointly optimized, for the management of the desired and undesired vehicular communication links. Moreover, the expression of optimal phase shifts is derived in a closed-form, which reveals that the performance gain brought by RIS is proportional to the number of intelligent elements, while inversely proportional to the distance from vehicle-to-BS, in a quadratic form. Moreover, in the case of discrete phase shifts, an intelligent algorithm is proposed for the beamforming design at RIS. Afterwards, with the objective to maximize the ergodic capacity of the V2I link, the optimal power allocation is also proposed. Simulation results confirm the accuracy of the proposed resource allocation strategy, and that the system performance in terms of the ergodic V2I capacity can be significantly improved by the RIS. The new Fifth generation (5G) of wireless communications and beyond 5G (B5G) networks are required to provide connectivity for massive number of devices at high speed and low latency. Within this context, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been involved and emerged in recent research since it is considered as an enabling technology for 5G and B5G networks. NOMA allows several users to share the same resources of time and frequency, making it an excellent candidate to provide impressively large connectivity with high spectral efficiency. In this paper, we study the performance of NOMA systems assuming independent but not necessarily to be identical $N$ -Nakagami-m multipath fading channels. This channel model subsumes the double Nakagami-m, which was investigated in the context of intervehicular communications and keyhole multiple input multiple output systems, as special cases. To this end, we derive exact analytical and asymptotic expressions for the probability density function of the overall signal to noise ratio, system capacity, and the pairwise error probability (PEP) for each user. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have emerged as a promising technology for millimeter wave (mmWave) networks. In this paper, we utilize tools from stochastic geometry to study the performance of a RIS-assisted mmWave cellular network. Specifically, the locations of the base stations (BSs) and the midpoints of the blockage are modeled as two independent Poisson point processes (PPPs), where the blockages are modeled by a Boolean model and a fraction of the blockages are coated with RISs. The particular characteristics of mmWave communications, i.e., directional beamforming and different path loss laws for line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation, are incorporated into our analysis. We derive analytical expressions for the success probability and the area spectral efficiency. The success probability under the special case where the blockage parameter is sufficiently small is also derived. Numerical results demonstrate that better coverage performance and higher energy efficiency can be achieved by a large-scale deployment of RISs. In addition, the tradeoff between the BS and RIS densities is investigated and the results show that the RISs can indeed enable the traditional networks to improve the success probability, especially for the cell-edge region, with limited power consumption. The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology that is anticipated to enable high spectrum and energy efficiencies in future wireless communication networks. This paper investigates optimum location-based RIS selection policies in RIS-aided wireless networks to maximize the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio for product-scaling and sum-scaling path-loss models where the received power scales with the product and sum of the transmitter-to-RIS and RIS-to-receiver distances, respectively. These scaling laws cover the important cases of end-to-end path-loss models in RIS-aided wireless systems. The random locations of all available RISs are modeled as a Poisson point process. To quantify the network performance, the outage probabilities and average rates attained by the proposed RIS selection policies are evaluated by deriving the distance distribution of the chosen RIS node as per the selection policies for both product-scaling and sum-scaling path-loss models. We also propose a limited-feedback RIS selection framework to achieve distributed network operation. The outage probabilities and average rates obtained by the limited-feedback RIS selection policies are derived for both path-loss models as well. Multi-numerology transmission is a promising multiple access scheme for flexible communication systems, which can simultaneously support users with different service requirements. To this end, both inter- and intra-numerology interference (inter-NI and intra-NI) should be suppressed, which is not straightforward. This paper proposes a novel zero-forcing (ZF) precoding design, which perfectly eliminates all the interference, for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with multi-numerology. First of all, we express the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of the multi-numerology system with spectrum sharing. From the SINR representation, we identify the channels that precoders must nullify to suppress inter-NI. After that, we propose a ZF precoder suppressing both inter-NI and intra-NI perfectly. The lower bound of ergodic achievable rate with perfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is analyzed. Based on the lower bound of ergodic achievable rate, we present the feasible rate region. Also, we propose two power allocation schemes: user fairness and the ergodic sum rate maximization. This article studies the transmit beamforming security in the dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) system, where the radar beam also serves as the artificial jamming to suppress potential eavesdropper channels. Unlike previous researches, which assumed that the lone target might be a potential eavesdropper on the adversary side, this paper analyses a more generic scenario in which the eavesdroppers’ channel state information (CSI) is unknown. The eavesdropping rate should be limited to guarantee transmission confidentiality, which is intractable owing to the unknown CSI. To address this issue, we present the long-term eavesdropping signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) as a more tractable security metric. Based on the long-term eavesdropping SINR, the sum rate maximization (SRM) and jamming power maximization (JPM) transmission scheme are investigated. For the SRM scheme, we propose a zero-forcing (ZF) suboptimal algorithm to solve the non-convex fractional programming (FP) problem, and for the JPM scheme, the resultant problem is solved via the semidefinite relaxation (SDR) technique. In this paper, we propose a reference-free artificial noise (AN) waveform design and cancellation scheme for single-input-single-output (SISO) wireless secure transmission. First, a system structure with the aid of AN is presented, where we provide a specific method extracting the sign information of each symbol from the desired signal (DS) to form AN at the transmitter. Then, we notice that the legitimate receiver enable to reconstruct the AN from the received signal by almost the same method as the transmitter without AN reference, which reduces the system complexity in practice. Subsequently, the AN cancellation performance and the secrecy capacity at the receiver are analyzed, and their upper bounds are also derived. Finally, simulation results confirm that the proposed reference-free AN design and cancellation scheme can effectively suppress the AN at legitimate receiver, while degrades the signal to noise ratio (SNR) at eavesdropper seriously, which provides impressive secure performance in terms of secrecy capacity. In this paper, the extended $\eta$ - ${\mathcal F}$ composite fading distribution is proposed. This new distribution is simple, characterized in terms of physical parameters, able to model environments where the multipath fading coexists with shadowing and takes into account the clustering imbalance between the in-phase and quadrature components. For the aforementioned distribution, new expressions are derived for the probability density function (PDF); cumulative distribution function, higher-order moments and moment generating function of the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio; joint envelope-phase PDF and amount of fading. Subsequently, expressions are deduced for the outage probability, average symbol error probability and average channel capacity. An asymptotic analysis is also provided. Several curves are presented and the theoretical results are corroborated by Monte-Carlo simulations. Target detection is an important problem in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. Many existing target detection algorithms were proposed without taking into consideration the quantization error caused by analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). This paper addresses the problem of target detection for MIMO radar with one-bit ADCs and derives a Rao’s test-based detector. The proposed method has several appealing features: 1) it is a closed-form detector; 2) it allows us to handle sign measurements straightforwardly; 3) there are closed-form approximations of the detector’s distributions, which allow us to theoretically evaluate its performance. Moreover, the closed-form distributions allow us to study the performance degradation due to the one-bit ADCs, yielding an approximate 2 dB loss in the low-signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) regime compared to $\infty$ -bit ADCs. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been introduced as a promising emerging paradigm to design a smart radio environment for improving wireless capacity. It has the potential to reshape wave propagation via its tunable and low-cost reflecting elements. Therefore, it is regarded as a propitious solution that provides alternative paths for the propagation of high-frequency signals, which are vulnerable to blockages and suffer from penetration losses. Because of those features, RIS has been considered to be integrated into the wireless vehicular network (WVN), which is characterized by high mobility and high quality of service (QoS) requirements. Hence, similar to relaying systems, a vehicle needs to select the best available RIS that maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver. Inspired by that, in this paper, we introduce the partial RIS selection for enhancing capacity and reducing error rate. We derive closed-form expressions for the ergodic capacity, symbol error probability (SEP), and energy efficiency for a partial RIS selection design. Besides, we compare its performances to the partial relaying design while considering: decode-and-forward (DF) and amplify-and-forward fixed gain (AF). Moreover, we consider a wireless attack scenario, where an eavesdropper intends to overhear the transmitted signal at the receiver’s end. Then, we compare partial RIS to partial relay selection from this security perspective, where we derive closed-form expressions for the average secrecy capacity. This paper investigates the capacity gain of full duplex (FD) self-backhauling over the half duplex (HD) counterpart in downlink cellular systems, and then proposes an opportunistic FD scheme. The first step is to derive the capacity gain of FD self-backhauling over the HD counterpart as a function of the system parameters in a computationally tractable form. Unlike previous studies on the capacity of FD self-backhauling, a practical constraint is imposed so that the end-to-end link achieves a target signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) for a successful link connection. Also, a condition under which FD is more beneficial than HD is derived. Specifically, the minimum allowable self interference cancellation factor and the maximum allowable cell radius for the benefit of FD are derived as an explicit function of system parameters. Their dependencies on the system parameters are investigated and compared with counterparts derived for single-hop point-to-point links. Lastly, to overcome the weak points of FD and HD, this paper proposes a user-wise opportunistic FD (OFD) self-backhauled scheme. To this end, an instantaneous channel gain-based FD/HD switching rule is derived from a condition under which FD cannot instantaneously satisfy the target SINR. We confirm the substantial capacity gain of the proposed user-wise instantaneous OFD over a cell-wise static duplex switching scheme, as well as the fixed duplex (HD or FD) schemes. When compared to the static duplex switching scheme, the proposed OFD is most beneficial at the boundary of HD-preferred and FD-preferred regions. Based on this, a system-level guideline is proposed for selecting the most practical scheme among OFD, FD, and HD by trading off capacity gain and switching overhead.
