In the production of paper cups in industrial factories, it is tried to print high quality cups with less waste loss with the help of sensors and heating resistances mounted on the paper cup machine. In this study, a system that detects faulty products based on image processing and removes it by controlling the machine with servo motors, asynchronous motors and programmable logic controller (PLC) is designed. For fault product detection, classification has been performed using real-time Haarcascade algorithm and You Only Look Once (YOLO) algorithm which is a deep learning methods, and real-time object detection has been carried out using the OpenCv library. With this study, an effective faulty product detection and removing hardware system was realized by adapting artificial intelligence algorithms to a machine used in industry. Based on the results, a whole system can be applied to systems that involve removing a faulty product from a band in any production, packaging etc. facility is proposed. A hardware consisting of servo motors, asynchronous motors and PLC was designed to separate faulty cups from the existing paper cup production machine in this study. Then, a data set composed of 1068 images was created with images taken from the camera for faulty and faultless paper cups. Using this dataset, the effect of different deep learning methods on performance in the real-time system has been examined and successful results have been obtained. Significant Wave Height (SWH) is crucial in many aspect of ocean engineering. The accurate prediction of SWH has therefore been of immense practical value. Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) time series prediction methods have been widely used for single-point short-term SWH time-series forecasting, resulting in many AI-based models claiming to achieve good results. However, the extent to which these complex AI models can outperform traditional methods has largely been overlooked. This study compared five different models - AutoRegressive (AR), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and WaveNet - for their performance on SWH time series prediction at 16 buoy locations. Surprisingly, the results suggest that the differences of performance among different models are negligible, indicating that all these AI models have only "learned" the linear auto-regression from the data. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and automated robotics will profoundly influence space operations. By utilising machine learning and deep learning approaches, AI-enabled systems may accomplish tasks as well as improve their own performance. These capabilities are useful in the often-remote settings of outer space and will grow in value as automated space operations become more widespread. As AI extends throughout the space domain, automated algorithms will take on many of the roles that have historically been handled by humans. Artificial intelligence is progressing from theory to implementation in the space environment by exposing new satellites and orbital autonomous vehicles to new data. Even though all initial computational parameters are provided, such systems' outputs can be very unpredictable, putting people, property, and the environment at risk. This paper investigates the application of United Nations space treaties, selected regional AI regulations, and various 'soft-law' instruments and industry initiatives focusing on responsible AI system development to space-based AI systems. Following that, reforms are proposed to clarify the practical relationship between AI systems and the international legal regime that governs space, as well as a 'bottom-up' regulatory approach to better facilitate the future development of regulation governing the use of AI by the global space sector. While this work does not purport to provide a conclusive resolution to these multifaceted matters, its objective is to underscore significant obstacles that arise at the convergence of space law and AI, serving as a preliminary foundation for subsequent discussions on this issue. • Advances in AI and automated robotics will have a profound impact on space operations. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has become a major source of disability worldwide, increasing the interest in algorithms that use artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize the interpretation of imaging studies, prognosis estimation, and critical care issues. In this study we present a bibliometric analysis and mini-review on the main uses that have been developed for TBI in AI. The results informing this review come from a Scopus database search as of April 15, 2023. The bibliometric analysis was carried out via the mapping bibliographic metrics method. Knowledge mapping was made in the VOSviewer software (V1.6.18), analyzing the "link strength" of networks based on co-occurrence of key words, countries co-authorship, and co-cited authors. In the mini-review section, we highlight the main findings and contributions of the studies. A total of 495 scientific publications were identified from 2000 to 2023, with 9262 citations published since 2013. Among the 160 journals identified, The Journal of Neurotrauma, Frontiers in Neurology , and PLOS ONE were those with the greatest number of publications. The most frequently co-occurring key words were: "machine learning", "deep learning", "magnetic resonance imaging", and "intracranial pressure". The United States accounted for more collaborations than any other country, followed by United Kingdom and China. Four co-citation author clusters were found, and the top 20 papers were divided into reviews and original articles. AI has become a relevant research field in TBI during the last 20 years, demonstrating great potential in imaging, but a more modest performance for prognostic estimation and neuromonitoring. Cameras are rapidly becoming the choice for on-board sensors towards space rendezvous due to their small form factor and inexpensive power, mass, and volume costs. When it comes to docking, however, they typically serve a secondary role, whereas the main work is done by active sensors such as lidar. This paper documents the development of a proposed AI-based (artificial intelligence) navigation algorithm intending to mature the use of on-board visible wavelength cameras as a main sensor for docking and on-orbit servicing (OOS), reducing the dependency on lidar and greatly reducing costs. Specifically, the use of AI enables the expansion of the relative navigation solution towards multiple classes of scenarios, e.g., in terms of targets or illumination conditions, which would otherwise have to be crafted on a case-by-case manner using classical image processing methods. Multiple convolutional neural network (CNN) backbone architectures are benchmarked on synthetically generated data of docking manoeuvres with the International Space Station (ISS), achieving position and attitude estimates close to 1 % range-normalised and 1 deg, respectively, an established rule of thumb for the navigation measurement accuracy during final approach. Recently, computer vision and artificial intelligence are being used as enabling technologies for plant phenotyping studies, since they allow the analysis of large amounts of data gathered by the sensors. Plant phenotyping studies can be devoted to the evaluation of complex plant traits either on the aerial part of the plant as well as on the underground part, to extract meaningful information about the growth, development, tolerance, or resistance of the plant itself. All plant traits should be evaluated automatically and quantitatively measured in a non-destructive way. This paper describes a novel approach for identifying plant roots from images of the root system architecture using a convolutional neural network (CNN) that operates on small image patches calculating the probability that the center point of the patch is a root pixel. The underlying idea is that the CNN model should embed as much information as possible about the variability of the patches that can show chaotic and heterogeneous backgrounds. Emotional intelligence (EI) involves recognizing, regulating, and understanding emotions in oneself and others, enabling effective relationship management. Emotional Intelligence acts as a differentiator in both personal and professional lives. Nevertheless, many people lack the ability of conveying and interpreting human emotions efficiently due to which they fall short in their social and professional lives. However, this can be improved if people know their Emotional Quotient (EQ) score and work towards improving it by implementing certain skills. Although traditional methods for measuring EQ exist, majority of them are manual and are built on self-efficacy based questionnaire which are often susceptible to faking. In order to overcome these lacuna, this paper proposes a digital approach that can be used for an automatic evaluation of EQ of a person via audio visual signal input. The paper devises four major factors self-awareness, self-regulation, self-motivation and social relationships with their weightages that can be utilised for automatic evaluation through the use of technology. The paper also proposes quantifiable parameters for measuring these factors. Both the ABO and Rhesus (Rh) blood groups play crucial roles in blood transfusion medicine. Herein, we report a simple and low-cost paper-based analytical device (PAD) for phenotyping red blood cell (RBC) antigens. Using this Rh typing format, 5 Rh antigens on RBCs can be simultaneously detected and macroscopically visualized within 12 min. The proposed Rh phenotyping relies on the presence or absence of hemagglutination in the sample zones after immobilizing the antibodies targeting each Rh antigen. The PAD was optimized in terms of filter paper type, antibodies, and distance of the visualization zone. In this study, the optimal conditions were Whatman filter paper Grade 4; anti-D, –C, -E, -c, and -e antibodies; RBC suspension of 30%; and a visualization zone of 1 cm above the sample zone. The accuracy of simultaneously phenotyping the five Rh RBC antigens in the blood samples (n = 4692) was 99.19%, comparable with the accuracy of the gold-standard tube method used by blood bank laboratories in several regions of Thailand. Furthermore, decision making based on this method can be assisted by deep learning. After implementing a two-stage objective detection algorithm (YOLO v4-tiny) and classification model (DenseNet-201), the ambiguous images (n = 48) were interpreted with 100% accuracy. Artificial Intelligence has found wide application, but also poses risks due to unintentional or malicious tampering during deployment. Regular checks are therefore necessary to detect and prevent such risks. Fragile watermarking is a technique used to identify tampering in AI models. However, previous methods have faced challenges including risks of omission, additional information transmission, and inability to locate tampering precisely. In this paper, we propose a method for detecting tampered parameters and bits, which can be used to detect, locate, and restore parameters that have been tampered with. We also propose an adaptive embedding method that maximizes information capacity while maintaining model accuracy. Our approach was tested on multiple neural networks subjected to attacks that modified weight parameters, and our results demonstrate that our method achieved great recovery performance when the modification rate was below 20%. • In clinical needle EMG interpretation, conventional machine learning methods were more often studied than deep learning methods. • Most studies developed models for classification of contraction signals and a few addressed the classification of rest signals. • Current research has methodological shortcomings, which prevent clinical implementation, but are surmountable. This scoping review provides an overview of artificial intelligence (AI), including machine and deep learning techniques, in the interpretation of clinical needle electromyography (nEMG) signals. A comprehensive search of Medline, Embase and Web of Science was conducted to find peer-reviewed journal articles. All papers published after 2010 were included. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed with CLAIM (checklist for artificial intelligence in medical imaging). 51 studies were identified that fulfilled the inclusion criteria. 61% used open-source EMGlab data set to develop models to classify nEMG signal in healthy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and myopathy (25 subjects). Only two articles developed models to classify signals recorded at rest. Most articles reported high performance accuracies, but many were subject to bias and overtraining. Current AI-models of nEMG signals are not sufficient for clinical implementation. Suggestions for future research include emphasizing the need for an optimal training and validation approach using large datasets of clinical nEMG data from a diverse patient population. The outcomes of this study and the suggestions made aim to contribute to developing AI-models that can effectively handle signal quality variability and are suitable for daily clinical practice in interpreting nEMG signals. Geographic spaces is a vast and complex system involving multiple elements and nonlinear interactions of these elements, and rich in geographical phenomena, processes and patterns. Artificial intelligence methods (AI) are increasingly utilized to extract information of interest, patterns and insights from massive remote sensing (RS) images. Among them, two representative paradigms for RS interpretation are knowledge-driven symbolism and data-driven connectionism. Knowledge-driven approaches are certain and theoretically sound, which consider the regularities, formulae with accompanying theorems, and expert knowledge. However, it is difficult to address huge-scale RS data and complex nonlinear problems. The data-driven paradigm has stronger data learning and representation ability, yet poor interpretability, low trustworthiness of interpretation results, and reliance on massive labeled data. To address these limitations, we argue that current RS intelligent interpretation requires the guidance of geographic ideas and a unified theoretical framework rather than the independent use of remotely sensed data, duplicative development of interpretation models, or isolated applications of geographic information extraction. Thus, we introduce the concepts of trustworthy RS interpretation (TRSI) with multi-granularity of space, time, and attribute to facilitate the understanding of the morphology, types, and indicators (visual perception) and the perspective of the structure, evolution, and trends (geographical cognition) of complex geographical space. Second, integrated technologies of the TRSI with multiple scales and stages are developed, including a pixel-level visual perception, a geo-parcel-level quantitative inversion, and a scene-level geographical cognition. Finally, a RS big data interpretation system with quantitative semantic parsing is designed to support precise applications with cloud–edge-end collaboration. Rather than a simple overview and accumulation of traditional RS intelligent interpretation methods, this paper analyzes current challenges in RS interpretation and proposes new concepts, technologies, and applications of TRSI. It will empower us to perceive the complex geographical space comprehensibly and reveal its structural composition and evolutionary mechanism, serving geospatial decision applications such as evaluation, planning, and forecasting. Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning have been widely used in various fields of mathematical computing, physical modeling, computational science, communication science, and stochastic analysis. Approaches based on Deep Artificial Neural Networks (DANN) are very popular in our days. Depending on the learning task, the exact form of DANNs is determined via their multi-layer architecture, activation functions and the so-called loss function. However, for a majority of deep learning approaches based on DANNs, the kernel structure of neural signal processing remains the same, where the node response is encoded as a linear superposition of neural activity, while the non-linearity is triggered by the activation functions. In the current paper, we suggest to analyze the neural signal processing in DANNs from the point of view of homogeneous chaos theory as known from polynomial chaos expansion (PCE). From the PCE perspective, the (linear) response on each node of a DANN could be seen as a 1st degree multi-variate polynomial of single neurons from the previous layer, i.e. linear weighted sum of monomials. From this point of view, the conventional DANN structure relies implicitly (but erroneously) on a Gaussian distribution of neural signals. Additionally, this view revels that by design DANNs do not necessarily fulfill any orthogonality or orthonormality condition for a majority of data-driven applications. Therefore, the prevailing handling of neural signals in DANNs could lead to redundant representation as any neural signal could contain some partial information from other neural signals. To tackle that challenge, we suggest to employ the data-driven generalization of PCE theory known as arbitrary polynomial chaos (aPC) to construct a corresponding multi-variate orthonormal representations on each node of a DANN. Doing so, we generalize the conventional structure of DANNs to Deep arbitrary polynomial chaos neural networks (DaPC NN). They decompose the neural signals that travel through the multi-layer structure by an adaptive construction of data-driven multi-variate orthonormal bases for each layer. Moreover, the introduced DaPC NN provides an opportunity to go beyond the linear weighted superposition of single neurons on each node. Inheriting fundamentals of PCE theory, the DaPC NN offers an additional possibility to account for high-order neural effects reflecting simultaneous interaction in multi-layer networks. Introducing the high-order weighted superposition on each node of the network mitigates the necessity to introduce non-linearity via activation functions and, hence, reduces the room for potential subjectivity in the modeling procedure. Although the current DaPC NN framework has no theoretical restrictions on the use of activation functions. The current paper also summarizes relevant properties of DaPC NNs inherited from aPC as analytical expressions for statistical quantities and sensitivity indexes on each node. We also offer an analytical form of partial derivatives that could be used in various training algorithms. Technically, DaPC NNs require similar training procedures as conventional DANNs, and all trained weights determine automatically the corresponding multi-variate data-driven orthonormal bases for all layers of DaPC NN. The paper makes use of three test cases to illustrate the performance of DaPC NN, comparing it with the performance of the conventional DANN and also with plain aPC expansion. Evidence of convergence over the training data size against validation data sets demonstrates that the DaPC NN outperforms the conventional DANN systematically. Overall, the suggested re-formulation of the kernel network structure in terms of homogeneous chaos theory is not limited to any particular architecture or any particular definition of the loss function. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to simplify and optimize various steps of the brachytherapy workflow, and this literature review aims to provide an overview of the work done in this field. We conducted a literature search in June 2022 on PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane for papers that proposed AI applications in brachytherapy. A total of 80 papers satisfied inclusion/exclusion criteria. These papers were categorized as follows: segmentation (24), registration and image processing (6), preplanning (13), dose prediction and treatment planning (11), applicator/catheter/needle reconstruction (16), and quality assurance (10). AI techniques ranged from classical models such as support vector machines and decision tree-based learning to newer techniques such as U-Net and deep reinforcement learning, and were applied to facilitate small steps of a process (e.g., optimizing applicator selection) or even automate the entire step of the workflow (e.g., end-to-end preplanning). Many of these algorithms demonstrated human-level performance and offer significant improvements in speed. AI has potential to augment, automate, and/or accelerate many steps of the brachytherapy workflow. We recommend that future studies adhere to standard reporting guidelines. Auto-contouring could revolutionise future planning of radiotherapy treatment. The lack of consensus on how to assess and validate auto-contouring systems currently limits clinical use. This review formally quantifies the assessment metrics used in studies published during one calendar year and assesses the need for standardised practice. A PubMed literature search was undertaken for papers evaluating radiotherapy auto-contouring published during 2021. Papers were assessed for types of metric and the methodology used to generate ground-truth comparators. Our PubMed search identified 212 studies, of which 117 met the criteria for clinical review. Geometric assessment metrics were used in 116 of 117 studies (99.1%). This includes the Dice Similarity Coefficient used in 113 (96.6%) studies. Clinically relevant metrics, such as qualitative, dosimetric and time-saving metrics, were less frequently used in 22 (18.8%), 27 (23.1%) and 18 (15.4%) of 117 studies, respectively. There was heterogeneity within each category of metric. Over 90 different names for geometric measures were used. Methods for qualitative assessment were different in all but two papers. Variation existed in the methods used to generate radiotherapy plans for dosimetric assessment. Consideration of editing time was only given in 11 (9.4%) papers. A single manual contour as a ground-truth comparator was used in 65 (55.6%) studies. Only 31 (26.5%) studies compared auto-contours to usual inter- and/or intra-observer variation. In conclusion, significant variation exists in how research papers currently assess the accuracy of automatically generated contours. Geometric measures are the most popular, however their clinical utility is unknown. There is heterogeneity in the methods used to perform clinical assessment. Considering the different stages of system implementation may provide a framework to decide the most appropriate metrics. Diagnostic histopathology faces increasing demands due to aging populations and expanding healthcare programs. Semi-automated diagnostic systems employing deep learning methods are one approach to alleviate this pressure. The learning models for histopathology are inherently complex and opaque from the user's perspective. Hence different methods have been developed to interpret their behavior. However, relatively limited attention has been devoted to the connection between interpretation methods and the knowledge of experienced pathologists. The main contribution of this paper is a method for comparing morphological patterns used by expert pathologists to detect cancer with the patterns identified as important for inference of learning models. Given the patch-based nature of processing large-scale histopathological imaging, we have been able to show statistically that the VGG16 model could utilize all the structures that are observable by the pathologist, given the patch size and scan resolution. The results show that the neural network approach to recognizing prostatic cancer is similar to that of a pathologist at medium optical resolution. The saliency maps identified several prevailing histomorphological features characterizing carcinoma, e.g., single-layered epithelium, small lumina, and hyperchromatic nuclei with halo. A convincing finding was the recognition of their mimickers in non-neoplastic tissue. The method can also identify differences, i.e., standard patterns not used by the learning models and new patterns not yet used by pathologists. The present paper proposes such a computational framework based on deep learning techniques that, on the base of its automatic determination of the chemical concentration of the predominant metal from a microscope image, can subsequently independently also recognize and delineate the corrosion spots of the products specific to that metal. The experiments have been performed on iron and copper heritage items from the Oltenia Museum, Romania. The results suggest that, even with an economic training information in terms of microscope images and annotations, the artificial intelligence framework can provide on-site support for an early examination of metal heritage assets. In current deep learning architectures, each of the deeper layers in networks tends to contain hundreds of unorganized neurons which makes it hard for humans to understand how they interact with each other. By organizing the neurons using correlation as the criteria, humans can observe how clusters of neighbouring neurons interact with each other. Research in Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) aims to all alleviate the black-box nature of current AI methods and make them understandable by humans. In this paper, we extend our previous algorithm for XAI in deep learning, called Locality Guided Neural Network (LGNN). LGNN preserves locality between neighbouring neurons within each layer of a deep network during training. Motivated by Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs), the goal is to enforce a local topology on each layer of a deep network such that neighbouring neurons are highly correlated with each other. Our algorithm can be easily plugged into current state of the art Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models to make the neighbouring neurons more correlated. A cluster of neighbouring neurons activating for a class makes the network both quantitatively and qualitatively more interpretable when visualized, as we show through our experiments. This paper focuses on image processing with CNNs, but can theoretically be applied to any type of deep learning architecture. However, traditional methods of fracture identification rely on visual inspection by experts and manual extraction which are often time-consuming and labor-intensive. To address the problems and deficiencies of traditional methods, this study establishes a deep learning method based on the idea of transfer learning, namely Mask R-CNN, to achieve intelligent recognition and segmentation of fractures in ultrasonic logging images. The paper selects ultrasonic imaging logging images containing different types of fractures and expands the data through artificial synthesis, obtaining a large amount of high-quality data for model training to learn the semantic features of fractures. The results indicate that the Mask R-CNN model achieves 93.75% recognition accuracy and 92.92% recall rate for fracture identification in well logging images, which benefits from the idea of transfer learning. Moreover, the segmentation pixel accuracy and intersection over union reach 86.75% and 85.96% respectively. Finally, we further validated the recognition and segmentation performance of the Mask R-CNN model by conducting a comparative analysis with mainstream deep learning image segmentation models, including U-net, DeepLabv3+, and YolACT. The Mask R-CNN model based on transfer learning can effectively identify almost all continuous fractures, demonstrating outstanding detection performance. It is believed that this method can replace manual operations and achieve intelligent, accurate, and efficient automatic recognition and segmentation of fractures in ultrasonic logging images. To comprehend the developmental trends within this field, this study employs bibliometric and content analysis methods to comprehensively review and analyze DL research in the field of CF identification from various perspectives. Initially, 93 relevant literature pieces were retrieved and screened from two databases, the Web of Science Core Collection and the Chinese Science Citation Database, for review. The previous studies underwent quantitative analysis using bibliometric software across five dimensions: publication year, literature type and publication journal, country, author, and keyword. Subsequently, we analyze the current status and trends of employing DL in the field of CF identification from four perspectives: remote sensing data sources, DL models, types of CF extraction results, and sample datasets. Simultaneously, we combed through current publicly available sample datasets and data products that can be referenced to produce sample datasets for CFs. Property valuation research, evolving with Automated Valuation Models (AVMs) using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), encounters challenges in handling dynamic market conditions. While the market approach is a practical solution to complement the AVMs, it also suffers from different deficiencies, particularly in relying on subjective valuer judgment. In Australia's diverse real estate market, complete and up-to-date market data derived from recent transactions of the different property types within various suburbs can be crucial for valuers. However, accessing such data often comes at a high cost, and the availability of transaction data is limited, mainly when market analysis necessitates the consideration of property valuation across various property types and bedroom counts. Accordingly, this paper presents a novel multi-step method to estimate the median prices of different property types considering their bedroom counts at the suburban level in the Melbourne Metropolitan area to benefit valuers when adopting the market approach. Nine distinct and ensembled spatially-based imputation techniques of K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW), Weighted KNN, Weighted IDW, Weighted KNN-IDW, Random Forest (RF), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), RF-IDW-KNN and XGBoost-IDW-KNN are first employed to impute missing data on six market-related parameters obtained from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV). These parameters include median price (with no consideration of bedroom counts), price change, median rent, rental yield, clearance rate and days on market for houses and units. Next, based on these parameters, three ML algorithms—RF, Support Vector Regression (SVR) and XGBoost—are developed to estimate the median prices. Subsequently, the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) technique is employed for Deep Learning (DL)-based spatiotemporal analysis, clustering suburbs based on property value fluctuations. Finally, these clusters are integrated into the ML models developed in the previous step as an auxiliary feature to assess their potential impact on enhancing price estimation accuracy. The results demonstrate promising accuracies for different property types based on different performance assessment metrics. Post-hoc explaining approaches for deep learning (DL) models has attracted much attention in safety–critical applications such as rotating machinery intelligent fault diagnosis (IFD). However, with the help of the explanation techniques, the models are still fragile to domain shifts caused by varying speeds and loads without help for improving their cross-domain performance. Since humans in the decision-making loop are essential for a reliable diagnostic system to determine the reliability of diagnosis, this paper proposes a causal explaining guided domain generalization (CXDG) method to realize trust worthy IFD with human in the decision loop. Specifically, an explaining model is trained with the conditional mutual information, which is a causal strength metric, and utilized to tell the causal features in the input data as the attributions of the diagnostic model. A translation process of the attributions is proposed to make the explaining process understandable. Furthermore, the aim of this paper is not only explaining but also beyond that the diagnostic model is guided to focus on the causal features to improve its generalization ability in unseen domains. The effectiveness of the method is validated on two experiment datasets. Introduction: The research described in this paper explored the factors contributing to the injury severity resulting from the male and female older driver (65 years and older) at-fault crashes at unsignalized intersections in Alabama. Method: Random parameter logit models of injury severity were estimated. The estimated models identified a variety of statistically significant factors influencing the injury severities resulting from older driver at-fault crashes. Results : According to these models, some variables were found to be significant only in one model (male or female) but not in the other one. For example, variables such as driver under the influence of alcohol/drugs, horizontal curve, and stop sign were found significant only in the male model. On the other hand, variables such as intersection approaches on tangents with flat grade, and driver older than 75 years were found significant only in the female model. In addition, variables such as making turning maneuver, freeway-ramp junction, high speed approach, and so forth were found significant in both models. Estimation findings showed that two parameters in the male model and another two parameters in the female model could be modeled as random parameters, indicating their varying influences on the injury severity due to unobserved effects. In addition to the random parameter logit approach, a deep learning approach based on Artificial Neural Networks was introduced to predict the outcome of the crashes based on 164 variables that are listed in the crash database. The artificial intelligence (AI)-based method achieved an accuracy of 76% indicating the role of the variables in deciding the final outcome. Practical Applications: Future plans are set to study the use of AI on large sized datasets to achieve a relatively high-performance, and hence to be able to identify which variables contribute the most to the final outcome. To develop a high-accuracy low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lung nodule diagnosis system by combining artificial intelligence (AI) technology with the Lung CT Screening Reporting and Data System (Lung-RADS), which can be used in the future AI-aided diagnosis of pulmonary nodules. The study comprised the following steps: (1) the best deep-learning segmentation method for pulmonary nodules was compared and selected objectively; (2) the Image Biomarker Standardization Initiative (IBSI) was used for feature extraction and to determine the best feature reduction method; and (3) a principal component analysis (PCA) and three machine learning methods were used to analyse the extracted features, and the best method was determined. The Lung Nodule Analysis 16 dataset was applied to train and test the established system in this study. The competition performance metric (CPM) score of the nodule segmentation reached 0.83, the accuracy of nodule classification was 92%, the kappa coefficient with the ground truth was 0.68, and the overall diagnostic accuracy (calculated by the nodules) was 0.75. This paper summarises a more efficient AI-assisted diagnosis process of pulmonary nodules, and has better performance compared with the previous literature. Acute alcohol intoxication impairs cognitive and psychomotor abilities leading to various public health hazards such as road traffic accidents and alcohol-related violence. Intoxicated individuals are usually identified by measuring their blood alcohol concentration (BAC) using breathalyzers that are expensive and labor intensive. In this paper, we developed the Audio-based Deep Learning Algorithm to Identify Alcohol Inebriation (ADLAIA) that can instantly predict an individual's intoxication status based on a 12-s recording of their speech. ADLAIA was trained on a publicly available German Alcohol Language Corpus that comprises a total of 12,360 audio clips of inebriated and sober speakers (total of 162, aged 21–64, 47.7% female). ADLAIA's performance was determined by computing the unweighted average recall (UAR) and accuracy of inebriation prediction. ADLAIA was able to identify inebriated speakers – with a BAC of 0.05% or higher – with an UAR of 68.09% and accuracy of 67.67%. ADLAIA had a higher performance (UAR of 75.7%) in identifying intoxicated speakers (BAC > 0.12%). Deep learning models have achieved high performance across different domains, such as medical decision-making, autonomous vehicles, decision support systems, among many others. However, despite this success, the inner mechanisms of these models are opaque because their internal representations are too complex for a human to understand. This opacity makes it hard to understand the how or the why of the predictions of deep learning models. There has been a growing interest in model-agnostic methods that make deep learning models more transparent and explainable to humans. Some researchers recently argued that for a machine to achieve human-level explainability, this machine needs to provide human causally understandable explanations, also known as causability. A specific class of algorithms that have the potential to provide causability are counterfactuals. This paper presents an in-depth systematic review of the diverse existing literature on counterfactuals and causability for explainable artificial intelligence (AI). We performed a Latent Dirichlet topic modelling analysis (LDA) under a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework to find the most relevant literature articles. This analysis yielded a novel taxonomy that considers the grounding theories of the surveyed algorithms, together with their underlying properties and applications to real-world data. Our research suggests that current model-agnostic counterfactual algorithms for explainable AI are not grounded on a causal theoretical formalism and, consequently, cannot promote causability to a human decision-maker. Furthermore, our findings suggest that the explanations derived from popular algorithms in the literature provide spurious correlations rather than cause/effects relationships, leading to sub-optimal, erroneous, or even biased explanations. Timely monitoring of abnormal vibration of machinery in highly harsh environments is essential to ensure the safe operation of mechanical systems. This paper uses a self-charging power module to harvest energy to provide sustainable power for monitoring multidirectional ultra-low frequency mechanical vibrations. The power generation unit consists mainly of a spherical electromagnetic triboelectric hybrid nanogenerator (SETE-HNG). It is equipped with advanced sensing functions to support deep learning to identify signals with different directions of vibration, different frequencies, and different amplitudes of vibration, thereby enhancing the high-precision perception function. The accuracy of the prediction results is as high as 98.6622%, 100%, and 99.3333%, respectively. A Power Management Circuitry (PMC) has been meticulously crafted to maximize the utilization of vibrational energy. It efficiently charges a 40 mAh lithium polymer battery to 3.3 V in just 26 min, all without the requirement of an external power source. This advancement facilitates self-powered Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking of vibrational signals. Moreover, the stored energy is harnessed to energize a microcontroller and a low-power Bluetooth module. This enables real-time monitoring of mechanical vibrations via a mobile phone. Industrial products typically lack defects in smart manufacturing systems, which leads to an extremely imbalanced task of recognizing surface defects. With this imbalanced sample distribution, machine learning and deep learning algorithms preferentially learn features from the majority classes, potentially leading to inaccurate results. Addressing the issue of sample imbalance has thus emerged as a critical area of research within the field of industrial intelligent manufacturing. This paper discusses the imbalanced sample problem of industrial product surface defect detection algorithms, and proposes the existence of "four imbalances and two uncertainties". It also summarizes the industrial product surface dataset and innovatively adds the imbalance rate comparison to the dataset. In this study, data re-sampling, data expansion, feature extraction and identification, and re-weighting of category weights are elaborated at the level of data and algorithm respectively. Subsequently, in ascending order of algorithmic advancement, the application of improved heuristic algorithms, deep learning (DL) algorithms structured around artificial neural networks (ANNs), and deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms in the DNVC domain are sequentially introduced, and the relationships among the three AI technologies in framework, control principles, and performance are systematically analyzed. Additionally, attention is directed toward the algorithmic progress made in addressing specific challenges within the DNVC process. Lastly, building upon extant research, the paper summarizes four prominent developmental directions for AI in DNVC: safety exploration, information privacy, multi-feeder collaboration, and heightened uncertainty. The fault management process is facilitated by equipping power distribution systems with automated devices, especially remote-controlled switches (RCSs). Although RCS plays a key role in improving the system's reliability, it imposes significant investment, installation, and maintenance costs. Hence, RCSs should be optimally located in distribution feeders for the highest profit. In previous works, reliability-oriented mathematical optimization models have been formulated to reach this goal. However, the number of test solutions exponentially grows with the problem size to find the globally optimal solution. This paper uses machine learning to propose a scalable and easy-to-implement model for optimal switch placement in real power distribution systems. At first, the features of candidate points for installing RCSs are introduced. Then, a learning model is applied to deeply explore the relationship between these features and optimal locations for installing RCSs. After training, the learning-based surrogate model directly determines the optimal RCS placement strategy in real power distribution systems by leveraging knowledge gained from past experiences. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed surrogate model is approximately 29 times faster than the integer programming-based mathematical model, without a significant loss of accuracy, when implemented on a modified 11 kV network connected to Bus 4 of the Roy Billiton test system. Radioactive particle tracking is a nuclear technique that tracks a sealed radioactive particle inside a volume through a mathematical location algorithm, which is widely applied in many fields such as chemical and civil engineering in hydrodynamics flows. It is possible to reconstruct the trajectory of the radioactive particle using a traditional mathematical algorithm or artificial intelligence methods. In this paper, the traditional algorithm is based on solving a minimization problem between the simulated events and a calibration dataset, and it was written using C++ language. The artificial intelligence method is represented by a deep neural network, in which hyperparameters were defined using a Python optimization library called Optuna. This paper aims to compare the potentiality of both methods to evaluate the accuracy of the radioactive particle tracking technique. This study proposes a simplified model of a concrete mixer, six NaI(Tl) detectors, and a137Cs sealed radioactive particle. The simulated measurement geometry and the dataset (3615 patterns) were developed using the MCNPX code, which is a mathematical code based on the Monte Carlo Method. The results show a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 20.81%, 10.33%, and 16.84% for x, y and z coordinates, respectively, for the traditional algorithm. For the deep neural network, MAPE is 6.87%, 2.70%, and 22.79% respectively for x, y and z coordinates. Advancements in structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques have spiked in the past few decades due to the rapid evolution of novel sensing and data transfer technologies. This development has facilitated the simultaneous recording of a wide range of data, which could contain abundant damage-related features. Concurrently, the age of omnipresent data started with massive amounts of SHM data collected from large-size heterogeneous sensor networks. The abundance of information from diverse sources needs to be aggregated to enable robust decision-making strategies. Data fusion is the process of integrating various data from heterogeneous sources to produce more useful, accurate, and reliable information about system behavior. This paper reviews recent developments in data fusion techniques applied to SHM systems. The theoretical concepts, applications, benefits, and limitations of current methods and challenges in SHM are presented, and future trends in data fusion methods are discussed. Although fully automated, operation of the District Heating Systems (DHS) is considered reactive and simplistic since control decisions are most often made based on the real-time ambient temperature. The research presented in this paper is aiming at facilitating proactive DHS control, by using predictive modeling techniques based on modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) architectures, namely the Deep Learning (DL)-based multivariate time-series forecasting. Proactive approach involves controlling fluid temperature in the DHS supply line, based on relevant meteorological features, heat demand in the past and weather forecast. In this paper, we evaluate state-of-the-art DL architectures for multivariate one-step and multi-step prediction based on Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) approach, namely, stacked LSTM, bi-directional LSTM, encoder-decoder and attention models. The initial results of forecasting heat demand and local explanations are provided for the case of small 8MW DHS. Precision Agriculture (PA) promises to boost crop productivity while reducing agricultural costs and environmental footprints, and therefore is attracting ever-increasing interests in both academia and industry. This management strategy is underpinned by various advanced technologies including Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) sensing systems and Artificial Intelligence (AI) perception algorithms. In particular, due to their unique advantages such as a low cost, high spatio-temporal resolutions, flexibility, automation functions and minimized risk of operation, UAV sensing systems have been extensively applied in many civilian applications including PA since 2010. In parallel, AI algorithms (deep learning since 2012 in particular) are also drawing ever-increasing attention in different fields, since they are able to analyse an unprecedented volume/velocity/variety of data (semi-) automatically, which are also becoming computationally practical with the advancements of cloud computing, Graphics Processing Units and parallel computing. In this survey paper, therefore, a thorough review is performed on recent use of UAV sensing systems (e.g., UAV platforms, external sensing units) and AI algorithms (mainly supervised learning algorithms) in PA applications throughout the crop life-cycle, as well as the challenges and prospects for future development of UAVs and AI in agriculture sector. It is envisioned that this review is able to provide a timely technical reference, demystifying and promoting research, deployment and successful exploitation of AI empowered UAV perception systems for PA, and therefore contributing to addressing future agricultural and human nutrition challenges. Background Context: The field of artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly advancing, especially with recent improvements in deep learning (DL) techniques. Augmented (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are finding their place in healthcare, and spine surgery is no exception. The unique capabilities and advantages of AR and VR devices include their low cost, flexible integration with other technologies, user-friendly features and their application in navigation systems, which makes them beneficial across different aspects of spine surgery. Despite the use of AR for pedicle screw placement, targeted cervical foraminotomy, bone biopsy, osteotomy planning, and percutaneous intervention, the current applications of AR and VR in spine surgery remain limited.Purpose: The primary goal of this study was to provide the spine surgeons and clinical researchers with the general information about the current applications, future potentials, and accessibility of AR and VR systems in spine surgery.Study Design/setting: We reviewed titles of more than 250 journal papers from google scholar and PubMed with search words: augmented reality, virtual reality, spine surgery, and orthopaedic, out of which 89 related papers were selected for abstract review. Finally, full text of 67 papers were analyzed and reviewed.Methods: The papers were divided into four groups: technological papers, applications in surgery, applications in spine education and training, and general application in orthopaedic. A team of two reviewers performed paper reviews and a thorough web search to ensure the most updated state of the art in each of four group is captured in the review.Results: In this review we discuss the current state of the art in AR and VR hardware, their preoperative applications and surgical applications in spine surgery. Finally, we discuss the future potentials of AR and VR and their integration with AI, robotic surgery, gaming, and wearables.Conclusions: AR and VR are promising technologies that will soon become part of standard of care in spine surgery. The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of various well known medical image registration techniques with a special focus on registration between anatomical and functional medical images. Examples of anatomical medical images (AMI) are Computer Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI), X-ray radiographs and ultrasound etc. whereas Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Single Photon Emission Tomography (SPECT) and fMRI are examples of functional medical images (FMI). Irrespective of such types (AMI or FMI), every case can be considered as a medical imaging modality. All these modalities are widely used by clinicians to study the structure/functionality of human body parts for diagnosis and treatment. It is frequently required to combine PET/SPECT with CT/MRI to simultaneous study the metabolic and molecular information received through PET/SPECT with fine anatomical details observed by CT/MRI. This concurrent study will help in the diagnosis and localization of many diseases like cancer, blockage in coronary arteries and brain-related diseases like Parkinson, Alzheimer etc. Further, in many cases, clinicians are required to co-register one or more anatomical images with functional images, for example, ultrasound-guided biopsy fused with PET and MRI. This registration can be done either at the hardware level or at the software level. The introduction of integrated PET-CT machine increases the acceptability of hardware-based registration systems as compared to software-based methods among the medics. One possible reason for this is the lack of validation of results achieved through software-based registration methods. On the other hand, software-based registration methods also have many advantages over the hardware-based registration systems like lesser exposure to radiation and no need for new investment on hardware etc. In this paper, both the methods with their merits and demerits are discussed in detail. [Display omitted] In recent years, with the improvement of artificial intelligence technology, it has become possible to reconstruct high-precision 3D human body models based on ordinary RGB images. The current 3D human body reconstruction technology requires complex external equipment to scan all angles of the human body, which is complicated to be implemented and cannot be popularized. In order to solve this problem, this paper applies deep learning models on reconstructing 3D human body based on monocular images. First of all, this paper uses Stacked Hourglass network to perform convolution operations on monocular images collected from different views. Then Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLPs) are used to decode the encoded high-level images. The feature codes in the two views(main and side) are fused, and the interior and exterior points are classified by the fusion features, so as to obtain the corresponding 3D occupancy field. At last, the Marching Cube algorithm is used for 3D reconstruction with a specific threshold and then we use Laplace smoothing algorithm to remove artifacts. This paper proposes a dense sampling strategy based on the important joint points of the human body, which has a certain optimization effect on the realization of high-precision 3D reconstruction. The performance of the proposed scheme has been validated on the open source datasets, MGN dataset and the THuman dataset, provided by Tsinghua University. Brain diseases threaten hundreds of thousands of people over the world. Medical imaging techniques such as MRI and CT are employed for various brain disease studies. As artificial intelligence succeeded in image analysis, scientists employed artificial intelligence, especially deep learning technologies, to assist brain disease studies. The AI applications for brain disease studies can be divided into two categories. The first category is preprocessing, including denoising, registration, skull-stripping, intensity normalization, and data augmentation. The second category is the clinical application that contains lesion segmentation, disease detection, grade classification, and outcome prediction. In this survey, we reviewed over one hundred representative papers on how to apply AI to brain disease studies. We first introduced AI-based preprocessing for brain disease studies. Second, we reviewed the influential works of AI-based brain disease studies. At last, we also discussed three development trends in the future. Shrimp production is one of the fastest growing sectors in the aquaculture industry. Despite extensive research in recent years, stocking densities in shrimp systems still depend on manual sampling which is neither time nor cost efficient and additionally challenges shrimp welfare. This paper compares the performance of automatic shrimp counting solutions for commercial Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) based farming systems, using eight Deep Learning based methods. The entire dataset includes 1379 images of shrimps in RAS farming tanks, taken at a distance using an iPhone 11 mini. These were manually annotated, with bounding boxes for every clearly visible shrimp. The dataset was partitioned into training (60 %, 828 samples), validation (20 %, 276 samples) and test (20 %, 275 samples) splits for purposes of training and evaluating the models. The present work demonstrates that state-of-the-art object detection models outperform manual counting and achieve high performance across the entire production range and at various circumstances known to be challenging for object detection (dim light, overlapping and small animals, various acquisition devices and image resolutions and camera distance to object). Highest counting performance was obtained with models based on YOLOv5m6 and Faster R–CNN (as opposed to neural network autoencoder architecture to estimate a density map). The best model generalizes well on an independent test set and even shows promising performance when tested with different taxa. The model performs best at densities below 200 shrimps per image with an overall error of 5.97 %. It is assumed that this performance can be improved by increasing the dataset size, especially with images at high shrimp stocking density, and it is strongly believed that a performance below the 5 % error threshold is close to being achieved, which will allow for deployment of the model in an industrial setting. In this paper, a novel Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) method for Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzers is presented. The challenge of limited availability of labeled fault data is addressed through the utilization of Bond Graphs (BG) and Self-Supervised Learning (SSL). The Linear Fractional Transformation-Bond Graph (LFT-BG) model is employed to generate uncertain residuals and pseudo labels, enabling the training of a deep neural network through self-supervised learning. Additionally, the BG-XAI method is introduced, leveraging eXplainable AI (XAI) and structural equations from Bond Graphs to provide explanations for the decisions made by the deep learning model. The superior performance of the proposed approach, particularly in dealing with limited labeled data, is demonstrated through comparative assessments against various state-of-the-art SSL methods. Artificial Intelligence (AI) models in radiation therapy are being developed with increasing pace. Despite this, the radiation therapy community has not widely adopted these models in clinical practice. A cohesive guideline on how to develop, report and clinically validate AI algorithms might help bridge this gap. A Delphi process with all co-authors was followed to determine which topics should be addressed in this comprehensive guideline. Separate sections of the guideline, including Statements, were written by subgroups of the authors and discussed with the whole group at several meetings. Statements were formulated and scored as highly recommended or recommended. The following topics were found most relevant: Decision making, image analysis, volume segmentation, treatment planning, patient specific quality assurance of treatment delivery, adaptive treatment, outcome prediction, training, validation and testing of AI model parameters, model availability for others to verify, model quality assurance/updates and upgrades, ethics. Key references were given together with an outlook on current hurdles and possibilities to overcome these. 19 Statements were formulated. A cohesive guideline has been written which addresses main topics regarding AI in radiation therapy. Deep learning has advanced the development of automated cervical cytology, yet limited studies have delved into methods for incorporating medical domain knowledge, and model interpretability has not been thoroughly investigated. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel, explainable detection method for abnormal cervical cells, called dual-stream self-attention based feature fusion and origin grouping network (DSA-FFOGNet). To encourage the model to focus more on lesion cells and cell nuclei of diagnostic significance, the dual-stream self-attention (DSA) module is introduced to enhance the learning of lesion-specific features. In view of the complex background, cell dense distribution, cell overlap, or clumps existing in the actual cervical cytology images, multi-scale features are extracted and fused by using the path aggregation network (PAN) to enhance the feature representation ability. By integrating biomedical insights regarding cell provenance and formulating an origin grouping loss, DSA-FFOGNet adjusts the penalties for cervical cells originating from different groups, thereby enhancing the optimization of the model training process. To further improve the detection performance, the classification and localization tasks are decoupled via the use of double detection heads. Extensive experiments validate the robustness of the proposed DSA-FFOGNet. The visualization of class activation maps (CAMs) showcases the model's interpretability.
