Deep learning is the predominant method used in artificial intelligence for addressing computer vision challenges. However, deep learning on three-dimensional data presents distinct obstacles and is now in its nascent phase. There have been significant advancements in deep learning specifically for three-dimensional data, offering a range of ways to address these issues. This study offers a comprehensive examination of the latest advancements in deep learning methodologies. We examine many benchmark models for the tasks of 3D object registration, augmentation, and reconstruction. We thoroughly analyse their architectures, advantages, and constraints. There is a growing trend of using artificial intelligence, particularly deep learning algorithms, in medical diagnostics, revolutionizing healthcare by improving efficiency, accuracy, and patient outcomes. However, the use of artificial intelligence in medical diagnostics comes with the critical need to explain the reasoning behind artificial intelligence‐based predictions and ensure transparency in decision‐making. Explainable artificial intelligence has emerged as a crucial research area to address the need for transparency and interpretability in medical diagnostics. Explainable artificial intelligence techniques aim to provide insights into the decision‐making process of artificial intelligence systems, enabling clinicians to understand the factors the algorithms consider in reaching their predictions. This paper presents a detailed review of saliency‐based (visual) methods, such as class activation methods, which have gained popularity in medical imaging as they provide visual explanations by highlighting the regions of an image most influential in the artificial intelligence's decision. We also present the literature on non‐visual methods, but the focus will be on visual methods. We also use the existing literature to experiment with infrared breast images for detecting breast cancer. Towards the end of this paper, we also propose an "attention guided Grad‐CAM" that enhances the visualizations for explainable artificial intelligence. The existing literature shows that explainable artificial intelligence techniques are not explored in the context of infrared medical images and opens up a wide range of opportunities for further research to make clinical thermography into assistive technology for the medical community. Image semantic segmentation technology is one of the core research contents in the field of computer vision. With the improvement of computer performance and the continuous development of deep learning technology, researchers have more and more enthusiasm to study the actual effect and performance of image semantic segmentation. The results of deep semantic segmentation allow computers to have a more detailed and accurate understanding of images, and have a wide range of application needs in the fields of autonomous driving, intelligent security, medical imaging, remote sensing images, etc. However, the existing image semantic segmentation algorithms have the disadvantages of easy discontinuous results and insufficient prediction accuracy. In this paper, we take deep learning-based image semantic segmentation technology as the research object to explore the improvement of the image semantic segmentation algorithm and its application in road scenarios. First, this paper proposes MCU-Net method based on residual fusion and multi-scale contextual information. MCU-Net uses residual fusion module to deepen the network structure and improve the ability of U-Net to acquire deeper features. Then a top-down and bottom-up path is constructed for feature information between different levels, and the spatial and semantic information contained in shallow and deep features in the network is fully utilized by fusing features from different levels. In addition, an enhanced void space pyramid pooling module is added for feature information between the same levels, which enables the output features to have a larger range of semantic information. Second, this paper proposes the DAMCU-Net method based on attention mechanism and edge detection based on MCU-Net. DAMCU-Net extracts global contextual information by the attention mechanism optimization module, while fusing features using dense jump connections to facilitate the network to recover more spatial detail information during upsampling, and uses the FReLU activation function to improve the segmentation capability of the network for complex targets. For the edge information lost in the feature extraction process, the edge detection branch is added to supplement the feature information of the main path by feature fusion to achieve the optimization of the edge information. Recently, computer vision and artificial intelligence are being used as enabling technologies for plant phenotyping studies, since they allow the analysis of large amounts of data gathered by the sensors. Plant phenotyping studies can be devoted to the evaluation of complex plant traits either on the aerial part of the plant as well as on the underground part, to extract meaningful information about the growth, development, tolerance, or resistance of the plant itself. All plant traits should be evaluated automatically and quantitatively measured in a non-destructive way. This paper describes a novel approach for identifying plant roots from images of the root system architecture using a convolutional neural network (CNN) that operates on small image patches calculating the probability that the center point of the patch is a root pixel. The underlying idea is that the CNN model should embed as much information as possible about the variability of the patches that can show chaotic and heterogeneous backgrounds. Simple Summary: Breast cancer is a significant cause of female cancer-related deaths in the US. Checking how severe the cancer is helps in planning treatment. Modern AI methods are good at grading cancer, but they are not used much in hospitals yet. We developed and utilized ensemble deep learning algorithms for addressing the tasks of classifying (1) breast cancer subtype and (2) breast cancer invasiveness from whole slide image (WSI) histopathology slides. The ensemble models used were based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) known for extracting distinctive features crucial for accurate classification. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive analysis of these models and the used methodology for breast cancer diagnosis tasks. Cancer diagnosis and classification are pivotal for effective patient management and treatment planning. In this study, a comprehensive approach is presented utilizing ensemble deep learning techniques to analyze breast cancer histopathology images. Our datasets were based on two widely employed datasets from different centers for two different tasks: BACH and BreakHis. Within the BACH dataset, a proposed ensemble strategy was employed, incorporating VGG16 and ResNet50 architectures to achieve precise classification of breast cancer histopathology images. Introducing a novel image patching technique to preprocess a high-resolution image facilitated a focused analysis of localized regions of interest. The annotated BACH dataset encompassed 400 WSIs across four distinct classes: Normal, Benign, In Situ Carcinoma, and Invasive Carcinoma. In addition, the proposed ensemble was used on the BreakHis dataset, utilizing VGG16, ResNet34, and ResNet50 models to classify microscopic images into eight distinct categories (four benign and four malignant). For both datasets, a five-fold cross-validation approach was employed for rigorous training and testing. Preliminary experimental results indicated a patch classification accuracy of 95.31% (for the BACH dataset) and WSI image classification accuracy of 98.43% (BreakHis). This research significantly contributes to ongoing endeavors in harnessing artificial intelligence to advance breast cancer diagnosis, potentially fostering improved patient outcomes and alleviating healthcare burdens. Deep learning has achieved immense success in computer vision and has the potential to help physicians analyze visual content for disease and other abnormalities. However, the current state of deep learning is very much a black box, making medical professionals skeptical about integrating these methods into clinical practice. Several methods have been proposed to shed some light on these black boxes, but there is no consensus on the opinion of medical doctors that will consume these explanations. This paper presents a study asking medical professionals about their opinion of current state-of-the-art explainable artificial intelligence methods when applied to a gastrointestinal disease detection use case. We compare two different categories of explanation methods, intrinsic and extrinsic, and gauge their opinion of the current value of these explanations. The results indicate that intrinsic explanations are preferred and that physicians see value in the explanations. Based on the feedback collected in our study, future explanations of medical deep neural networks can be tailored to the needs and expectations of doctors. Remote sensing datasets usually have a wide range of spatial and spectral resolutions. They provide unique advantages in surveillance systems, and many government organizations use remote sensing multispectral imagery to monitor security-critical infrastructures or targets. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has advanced rapidly in recent years and has been widely applied to remote image analysis, achieving state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance. However, AI models are vulnerable and can be easily deceived or poisoned. A malicious user may poison an AI model by creating a stealthy backdoor. A backdoored AI model performs well on clean data but behaves abnormally when a planted trigger appears in the data. Backdoor attacks have been extensively studied in machine learning-based computer vision applications with natural images. However, much less research has been conducted on remote sensing imagery, which typically consists of many more bands in addition to the red, green, and blue bands found in natural images. In this paper, we first extensively studied a popular backdoor attack, BadNets, applied to a remote sensing dataset, where the trigger was planted in all of the bands in the data. Our results showed that SOTA defense mechanisms, including Neural Cleanse, TABOR, Activation Clustering, Fine-Pruning, GangSweep, Strip, DeepInspect, and Pixel Backdoor, had difficulties detecting and mitigating the backdoor attack. We then proposed an explainable AI-guided backdoor attack specifically for remote sensing imagery by placing triggers in the image sub-bands. Our proposed attack model even poses stronger challenges to these SOTA defense mechanisms, and no method was able to defend it. The emergence of data-driven analytics and intelligent monitoring systems is radically transforming the world of competitive sports. However, robust real-time activity recognition remains elusive for rapid-paced sports like table tennis due to the complexity of strokes and quick maneuvering. This paper tries to overcome this challenge through an innovative cloud-supported system integrating the Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning, and wearable sensors for automated analysis of table tennis gameplay. We strategically set up a multi-camera IoT system around a table tennis court to compile a rich labeled image dataset encapsulating over 15,000 frames. To improve model generalization, the images captured various playing styles, lighting conditions, and camera angles. We developed tailored SVM and CNN architectures optimized for table tennis activity classification. The models were trained on GPU-accelerated platforms using the curated dataset. After hyperparameter tuning and cross-validation, the CNN model achieved 96.2% accuracy, a precision value of 96.3%, a recall value of 95.2%, and an F1-score of 96.3% in classifying standard strokes and serves. Additionally, the models exhibited impressive processing speeds of 22–34 fps, enabling real-time utilization. Our proposed model outperformed the latest models in this field with higher accuracy, recall values, F1-score, and precision. While expanding the dataset diversity and testing variations of deep network architectures could further enhance performance, this paper demonstrates a crucial leap toward helping real-time analytics in table tennis using an AI-powered computer vision approach. Photovoltaic (PV) fault detection is crucial because undetected PV faults can lead to significant energy losses, with some cases experiencing losses of up to 10%. The efficiency of PV systems depends upon the reliable detection and diagnosis of faults. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques has been a growing trend in addressing these issues. The goal of this systematic review is to offer a comprehensive overview of the recent advancements in AI-based methodologies for PV fault detection, consolidating the key findings from 31 research papers. An initial pool of 142 papers were identified, from which 31 were selected for in-depth review following the PRISMA guidelines. The title, objective, methods, and findings of each paper were analyzed, with a focus on machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) approaches. ML and DL are particularly suitable for PV fault detection because of their capacity to process and analyze large amounts of data to identify complex patterns and anomalies. This study identified several AI techniques used for fault detection in PV systems, ranging from classical ML methods like k-nearest neighbor (KNN) and random forest to more advanced deep learning models such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Quantum circuits and infrared imagery were also explored as potential solutions. The analysis found that DL models, in general, outperformed traditional ML models in accuracy and efficiency. This study shows that AI methodologies have evolved and been increasingly applied in PV fault detection. The integration of AI in PV fault detection offers high accuracy and effectiveness. The manufacturing sector is a fundamental pillar of worldwide economies, contributing markedly to global economic growth. However, the manufacturing industry is persistently confronted with issues impeding its development and expansion, such as manpower shortages, safety concerns, high initial investment for installation, and long return on investment. Within this context, machine tending has become a crucial component of the manufacturing process and potentially serves as a viable solution to the afore-mentioned predicaments. Over the past 5 years, implementing automated machine-tending systems has widely extended from simulation or laboratory environments to practical applications in manufacturing workshops as robotics and artificial intelligence develop rapidly. To fully benefit from the potential of machine-tending applications, it is necessary to comprehend and tackle its associated challenges. Therefore, this paper aims to contribute to the evolution of machine-tending applications by investigating the impacts of emerging trends of advanced technologies, such as autonomous mobile robots, computer vision, machine learning, and deep learning. This systematic literature review is based on the Protocol of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses to analyze the 50 scientific literature related to machine tending in the last five years. Although some progress has been made through the application of artificial intelligence algorithms, several challenges remain. First, existing algorithms exhibit weak nonlinear feature extraction capabilities and noticeable limitations. Second, they overlook the intrinsic noise and redundant interference present in microscopic images. To address these issues, this paper investigates the automatic recognition of metallographic tissues by leveraging residual structures in deep neural networks. An enhanced residual network model based on transfer learning is proposed, which utilizes the pre-trained weights from the ImageNet dataset to facilitate learning with small sample data. This network offers higher classification accuracy and higher F1 scores. In addition, a deep residual shrinkage network model based on an attention mechanism is proposed. This model incorporates an attention sub-network into the original residual module and employs a soft threshold function to eliminate redundant features, including noise. The proposed algorithms are evaluated against various convolutional neural networks using 20 types of metallographic test sets. The experimental results showed that both methods have high accuracy rates of 95% and 94.44%, respectively, and F1 scores of 0.9464 and 0.9419. While maintaining the complexity of the model, there has been a significant improvement in accuracy, and the models exhibit strong generalization capabilities. In recent years, developments in the fields of computer vision and artificial intelligence have created new opportunities for studying sports performance. With advancements in computer vision and artificial intelligence, it is now possible to use massive volumes of video data to get deeper insights into sports dynamics, especially in precision-based video sports like table tennis. To develop skills, a thorough examination of player movements is required. With the development of vision-based human posture recognition, computers can function like humans and derive intelligent judgments from outside data. This paper presents a novel method that uses graph convolutional neural networks (GCNNs) to detect and identify improper postures and movements in table tennis players. In addition to conventional methods, the proposed method dissects the human skeleton into finely detailed head, trunk, and leg features. Deep-level features that offer a more comprehensive understanding of athlete movements are extracted after feeding these features into the network. The softmax classifier combines these features to produce the final recognition result. The effectiveness of this approach has been evaluated through extensive experimentation. The GCN model performs remarkably well, with accuracy rates of 86.4% on the NTU-RGB + D dataset and 79.1% on the COCO dataset. This accomplishment is significant because the model consistently yields accurate detection results, even in complex and occlusion-filled scenes. In comparison tests, the proposed model performs better than GraphSAGE, GAT, ChebNet, GIN, and GC-LSTM in identifying relevant body part movements in table tennis players while ignoring irrelevant ones. The Internet of Things (IoT) provides a collaborative infrastructure to communicate smart devices with cloud-edge healthcare applications, medical devices, wearable biosensors, etc. On the other hand, crowd counting as one of computer vision approaches is an emerging topic to detect any objects with static or dynamic mobility in the IoT environments. Smart crowd counting enables pattern recognition for many intelligent applications such as microbiology, surveillance, healthcare systems, crowdedness estimation, and other environmental case studies. According to complicated capturing systems in the IoT environments, crowd counting methods can influence on performance of object detection in the critical case studies using Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based approaches such as machine learning, deep learning, collaborative learning, fuzzy logic and meta-heuristic algorithms. This paper provides a new comprehensive technical analysis for existing AI-based crowd counting approaches in healthcare and medical systems, biotechnology and IoT environments. Increasing computational power and improving deep learning methods have made computer vision technologies pervasively common in urban environments. Their applications in policing, traffic management, and documenting public spaces are increasingly common (Ridgeway 2018, Coifman et al. 1998, Sun et al. 2020). Despite the often-discussed biases in the algorithms' training and unequally borne benefits (Khosla et al. 2012), almost all applications similarly reduce urban experiences to simplistic, reductive, and mechanistic measures. There is a lack of context, depth, and specificity in these practices that enables semantic knowledge or analysis within urban contexts, especially within the context of using and occupying urban space. This paper will critique existing uses of artificial intelligence and computer vision in urban practices to propose a new framework for understanding people, action, and public space. This paper revisits Geertz's (1973) use of thick descriptions in generating interpretive theories of culture and activity and uses this lens to establish a framework to approach evaluating the varied uses of computer vision technologies that weigh meaning. By discussing cases of implemented examples of urban computer vision—from LinkNYC and Numina's urban measurements to the Detroit Police's use of DataWorks Plus's facial recognition technology—it proposes a framework for evaluating the thickness of the algorithm's conclusions against the computational method's complexity required to produce that outcome. Further, we discuss how the framework's positioning may differ (and conflict) between different users of the technology, from engineer to urban planner and policymaker, to citizen. This paper also discusses how the current use and training of deep learning algorithms and how this process limits semantic learning and proposes three potential methodologies toward gaining a more contextually specific, urban-semantic, description of urban space relevant to urbanists. This paper contributes to the critical conversations regarding the proliferation of artificial intelligence by challenging the current applications of these technologies in the urban environment by highlighting their failures within this context while also proposing an evolution of these algorithms that may ultimately make them sensitive and useful within this spatial and cultural milieu. Computer Vision (CV) has become an essential field in Artificial Intelligence applications. Object detection and recognition (ODR) is one of the fundamental tasks of computer vision implementations. However, developing an efficient ODR model is still a significant problem. The model's execution time and speed are the most critical features during the inference or detection and recognition process, which need to be improved using the latest object detection architectures. In this paper, the handwritten detection and recognition (HDR) model is developed based on previously known algorithms with their efficiency, such as Faster R-CNN and YOLOv4 in the first hand. On the other hand, two new models capable of detecting and recognizing handwritten digits using the latest ODR algorithm are proposed, one based on the latest YOLO family architecture (YOLOv5-HDR) with high speed and accuracy and the other using the transformers architecture (DETR). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to achieve a details comparison between YOLOv5 and transformers-based models in handwritten digit detection. Finally, the detailed performance analysis achieved by the paper proves that the YOLOv4-based model achieved the testing inference 13% faster than Faster R-CNN. However, the proposed YOLOv5-based model outperformed the YOLOv4 and the transformers-based one as it increased the testing execution time 25% faster than the YOLOv4, three times faster than the DETR model. A further adversarial attack test has been conducted to ensure the robust performance of the proposed model. Furthermore, numerical experiment results and their analyses demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed YOLOv5-based model being the most stable for handwritten digit detection and recognition tasks. Anomaly detection in video surveillance is a highly developed subject that is attracting increased attention from the research community. There is great demand for intelligent systems with the capacity to automatically detect anomalous events in streaming videos. Due to this, a wide variety of approaches have been proposed to build an effective model that would ensure public security. There has been a variety of surveys of anomaly detection, such as of network anomaly detection, financial fraud detection, human behavioral analysis, and many more. Deep learning has been successfully applied to many aspects of computer vision. In particular, the strong growth of generative models means that these are the main techniques used in the proposed methods. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the deep learning-based techniques used in the field of video anomaly detection. Specifically, deep learning-based approaches have been categorized into different methods by their objectives and learning metrics. Additionally, preprocessing and feature engineering techniques are discussed thoroughly for the vision-based domain. This paper also describes the benchmark databases used in training and detecting abnormal human behavior. With the rapid development of object detection technology for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), it is convenient to collect data from UAV aerial photographs. They have a wide range of applications in several fields, such as monitoring, geological exploration, precision agriculture, and disaster early warning. In recent years, many methods based on artificial intelligence have been proposed for UAV object detection, and deep learning is a key area in this field. Significant progress has been achieved in the area of deep-learning-based UAV object detection. Thus, this paper presents a review of recent research on deep-learning-based UAV object detection. This survey provides an overview of the development of UAVs and summarizes the deep-learning-based methods in object detection for UAVs. In addition, the key issues in UAV object detection are analyzed, such as small object detection, object detection under complex backgrounds, object rotation, scale change, and category imbalance problems. Then, some representative solutions based on deep learning for these issues are summarized. Finally, future research directions in the field of UAV object detection are discussed. Over the last decades, the field of medicine has witnessed significant progress in artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), and deep learning (DL) systems. Otorhinolaryngology, and imaging in its various subspecialties, has not remained untouched by this transformative trend. As the medical landscape evolves, the integration of these technologies becomes imperative in augmenting patient care, fostering innovation, and actively participating in the ever-evolving synergy between computer vision techniques in otorhinolaryngology and AI. To that end, we conducted a thorough search on MEDLINE for papers published until June 2023, utilizing the keywords 'otorhinolaryngology', 'imaging', 'computer vision', 'artificial intelligence', and 'deep learning', and at the same time conducted manual searching in the references section of the articles included in our manuscript. Our search culminated in the retrieval of 121 related articles, which were subsequently subdivided into the following categories: imaging in head and neck, otology, and rhinology. Our objective is to provide a comprehensive introduction to this burgeoning field, tailored for both experienced specialists and aspiring residents in the domain of deep learning algorithms in imaging techniques in otorhinolaryngology. With the continuous development of artificial intelligence research, computer vision research has shifted from traditional "feature engineering"-based methods to deep learning-based "network engineering" methods, which automatically extracts and classifies features by using deep neural networks. Traditional methods based on artificial design features are computationally expensive and are usually used to solve simple research problems, which is not conducive for large-scale data feature extraction. Deep learning-based methods greatly reduce the difficulty of artificial features by learning features from large-scale data and are successfully applied in many visual recognition tasks. Video action recognition methods also shift from traditional methods based on artificial design features to deep learning-based methods, which is oriented to building more effective deep neural network models. Through collecting and sorting related research results found that academic for timing segment network of football and basketball video action research is relatively rich, but lack of badminton research given the above research results, this study based on timing segment network of badminton video action identification can enrich the research results, provide reference for follow-up research. This paper introduces the lightweight attention mechanism into the temporal segmentation network, forming the attention mechanism-timing segmentation network, and trains the neural network to get the classifier of badminton stroke action, which can be predicted as four common types: forehand stroke, backhand stroke, overhead stroke and pick ball. The experimental results show that the recognition recall and accuracy of various stroke movements reach more than 86%, and the average size of recall and accuracy is 91.2% and 91.6% respectively, indicating that the method based on timing segmentation network can be close to the human judgment level and can effectively conduct the identification task of badminton video strokes. Deep learning, which is a subfield of machine learning, has opened a new era for the development of neural networks. The auto-encoder is a key component of deep structure, which can be used to realize transfer learning and plays an important role in both unsupervised learning and non-linear feature extraction. By highlighting the contributions and challenges of recent research papers, this work aims to review state-of-the-art auto-encoder algorithms. Firstly, we introduce the basic auto-encoder as well as its basic concept and structure. Secondly, we present a comprehensive summarization of different variants of the auto-encoder. Thirdly, we analyze and study auto-encoders from three different perspectives. We also discuss the relationships between auto-encoders, shallow models and other deep learning models. The auto-encoder and its variants have successfully been applied in a wide range of fields, such as pattern recognition, computer vision, data generation, recommender systems, etc. Then, we focus on the available toolkits for auto-encoders. Overhead transmission line detection based on deep learning of aerial images taken by UAVs has been widely investigated. Despite its success, it is limited by several factors, including inappropriate evaluation criteria and dramatic scaling of components in the images. To mitigate these issues, a relative mean Average Precision evaluation index is proposed to accurately measure the model's detection performance for smaller objects. A data enhancement strategy including multi‐scale transformation is adopted to alleviate the problem of drastic scaling. The existing Cascade RCNN target detection technology is enhanced by incorporating Swin‐v2 and a balanced feature pyramid to improve feature characterization capabilities, while side‐aware boundary localization is utilized to improve the positioning accuracy of the model. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state‐of‐the‐art methods on CPLID and achieves 7.8%, 11.8%, and 5.5% higher detection accuracy than the baseline for mAP50, relative small and medium mAP, respectively. Artificial intelligence (AI) systems utilizing deep neural networks and machine learning (ML) algorithms are widely used for solving critical problems in bioinformatics, biomedical informatics and precision medicine. However, complex ML models that are often perceived as opaque and black-box methods make it difficult to understand the reasoning behind their decisions. This lack of transparency can be a challenge for both end-users and decision-makers, as well as AI developers. In sensitive areas such as healthcare, explainability and accountability are not only desirable properties but also legally required for AI systems that can have a significant impact on human lives. Fairness is another growing concern, as algorithmic decisions should not show bias or discrimination towards certain groups or individuals based on sensitive attributes. Explainable AI (XAI) aims to overcome the opaqueness of black-box models and to provide transparency in how AI systems make decisions. Interpretable ML models can explain how they make predictions and identify factors that influence their outcomes. However, the majority of the state-of-the-art interpretable ML methods are domain-agnostic and have evolved from fields such as computer vision, automated reasoning or statistics, making direct application to bioinformatics problems challenging without customization and domain adaptation. In this paper, we discuss the importance of explainability and algorithmic transparency in the context of bioinformatics. We provide an overview of model-specific and model-agnostic interpretable ML methods and tools and outline their potential limitations. We discuss how existing interpretable ML methods can be customized and fit to bioinformatics research problems. Further, through case studies in bioimaging, cancer genomics and text mining, we demonstrate how XAI methods can improve transparency and decision fairness. Deep learning (DL) has dramatically pushed the previous limits of various tasks, ranging from computer vision to natural language processing. Despite its success, the lack of model explanations thwarts the usage of these techniques in life-critical domains, e.g., medical diagnosis and self-driving systems. To date, the core technology to solve the explainable issue is explainable artificial intelligence (XAI). XAI methods have been developed to produce human-understandable explanations by leveraging intermediate results of the DL models, e.g., gradients and model parameters. While the effectiveness of XAI methods has been demonstrated in benign environments, their privacy against model extraction attacks (i.e., attacks at the model confidentially) requires to be studied. To this end, this paper proposes DMEAE, a data-free model extraction attack using explanation-guided, to explore XAI privacy threats. Compared with previous works, DMEAE does not require collecting any data and utilizes model explanation loss. Specifically, DMEAE creates synthetic data using a generative model with model explanation loss items. Extensive evaluations verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed attack strategy on SVHN and CIFAR-10 datasets. Due to the huge amount of data and the different computing power of different devices in practical application scenarios, it is important to maximize the computing power of edge computing devices without sacrificing accuracy. This paper proposes a high-precision federated learning-based model that can be applied to edge computing scenarios. In order to accommodate different computing power in different scenarios, this paper proposes a dual-ended adaptive federated learning framework; in order to adapt to low computing power scenarios, this paper performs lightweighting operations on the mainstream model; and in order to verify the effectiveness of the model, this paper conducts a number of targeted experiments. Compared with AlexNet, VGG, ResNet and GoogLeNet, this model improves the classification accuracy to 96.1%, which is 14.4% better than the baseline model and improves the Recall and Precision by 14.8% and 14.2%, respectively. In addition, by lightening the network, our methods reduce the inference latency and transmission latency by 24.4 ms and 10.5 ms, respectively. Background: The planetary rover is an essential platform for planetary exploration. Visual semantic segmentation is significant in the localization, perception, and path planning of the rover autonomy. Recent advances in computer vision and artificial intelligence brought about new opportunities. A systematic literature review (SLR) can help analyze existing solutions, discover available data, and identify potential gaps. Methods: A rigorous SLR has been conducted, and papers are selected from three databases (IEEE Xplore, Web of Science, and Scopus) from the start of records to May 2022. The 320 candidate studies were found by searching with keywords and bool operators, and they address the semantic terrain segmentation in the navigation vision of planetary rovers. Finally, after four rounds of screening, 30 papers were included with robust inclusion and exclusion criteria as well as quality assessment. Results: 30 studies were included for the review, and sub-research areas include navigation (16 studies), geological analysis (7 studies), exploration efficiency (10 studies), and others (3 studies) (overlaps exist). Five distributions are extendedly depicted (time, study type, geographical location, publisher, and experimental setting), which analyzes the included study from the view of community interests, development status, and reimplementation ability. One key research question and six sub-research questions are discussed to evaluate the current achievements and future gaps. Conclusions: Many promising achievements in accuracy, available data, and real-time performance have been promoted by computer vision and artificial intelligence. However, a solution that satisfies pixel-level segmentation, real-time inference time, and onboard hardware does not exist, and an open, pixel-level annotated, and the real-world data-based dataset is not found. As planetary exploration projects progress worldwide, more promising studies will be proposed, and deep learning will bring more opportunities and contributions to future studies. In this paper, 1,538 papers retrieved with the keywords "sports artificial intelligence (AI)" on the Web of Science database since 2007 were taken as the data source, and the Cite Space V software was used to visualize and analyze them. A visual knowledge graph was used to streamline the countries, institutions and authors conducting sports AI research, discipline distribution, research hotspots and development trends in the past 15 years. Subsequently, its development direction and research progress were discussed. Sports AI was widely distributed, with the US, China and the UK leading the way. The most prolific authors and teams in research on sports AI were concentrated in American universities. Their main research direction is to develop and improve smart wearable devices based on machine learning and deep learning technologies for different groups of people. Research on sports AI involved multiple disciplines, which mainly applied and referred to research methodologies and theories on engineering, computer science and sports science. It could be seen from the frequency and centrality of keywords that in the current field of sports AI, machine learning is the main direction, artificial neural networks is the main algorithm, and practical and empirical research based on data mining is the focus. Recent advancements in Natural Language Processing (NLP), particularly in Large Language Models (LLMs), associated with deep learning-based computer vision techniques, have shown substantial potential for automating a variety of tasks. These are known as Visual LLMs and one notable model is Visual ChatGPT, which combines ChatGPT's LLM capabilities with visual computation to enable effective image analysis. These models' abilities to process images based on textual inputs can revolutionize diverse fields, and while their application in the remote sensing domain remains unexplored, it is important to acknowledge that novel implementations are to be expected. Thus, this is the first paper to examine the potential of Visual ChatGPT, a cutting-edge LLM founded on the GPT architecture, to tackle the aspects of image processing related to the remote sensing domain. Among its current capabilities, Visual ChatGPT can generate textual descriptions of images, perform canny edge and straight line detection, and conduct image segmentation. These offer valuable insights into image content and facilitate the interpretation and extraction of information. By exploring the applicability of these techniques within publicly available datasets of satellite images, we demonstrate the current model's limitations in dealing with remote sensing images, highlighting its challenges and future prospects. Facial Expression Recognition (FER) is a prominent research area in Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence that has been playing a crucial role in human–computer interaction. The existing FER system focuses on spatial features for identifying the emotion, which suffers when recognizing emotions from a dynamic sequence of facial expressions in real time. Deep learning techniques based on the fusion of convolutional neural networks (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) are presented in this paper for recognizing emotion and identifying the relationship between the sequence of facial expressions. In this approach, a hyperparameter tweaked VGG-19 skeleton is employed to extract the spatial features automatically from a sequence of images, which avoids the shortcoming of the conventional feature extraction methods. Second, these features are given into bidirectional LSTM (Bi-LSTM) for extracting spatiotemporal features of time series in two directions, which recognize emotion from a sequence of expressions. The proposed method's performance is evaluated using the CK+ benchmark as well as an in-house dataset captured from the designed IoT kit. Finally, this approach has been verified through hold-out cross-validation techniques. The proposed techniques show an accuracy of 0.92% on CK+, and 0.84% on the in-house dataset. The experimental results reveal that the proposed method outperforms compared to baseline methods and state-of-the-art approaches. With the increasing volume of collected Earth observation (EO) data, artificial intelligence (AI) methods have become state-of-the-art in processing and analyzing them. However, there is still a lack of high-quality, large-scale EO datasets for training robust networks. This paper presents AgriSen-COG, a large-scale benchmark dataset for crop type mapping based on Sentinel-2 data. AgriSen-COG deals with the challenges of remote sensing (RS) datasets. First, it includes data from five different European countries (Austria, Belgium, Spain, Denmark, and the Netherlands), targeting the problem of domain adaptation. Second, it is multitemporal and multiyear (2019–2020), therefore enabling analysis based on the growth of crops in time and yearly variability. Third, AgriSen-COG includes an anomaly detection preprocessing step, which reduces the amount of mislabeled information. AgriSen-COG comprises 6,972,485 parcels, making it the most extensive available dataset for crop type mapping. It includes two types of data: pixel-level data and parcel aggregated information. By carrying this out, we target two computer vision (CV) problems: semantic segmentation and classification. To establish the validity of the proposed dataset, we conducted several experiments using state-of-the-art deep-learning models for temporal semantic segmentation with pixel-level data (U-Net and ConvStar networks) and time-series classification with parcel aggregated information (LSTM, Transformer, TempCNN networks). With the rapid development of artificial intelligence and computer vision, deep learning has become widely used for aircraft detection. However, aircraft detection is still a challenging task due to the small target size and dense arrangement of aircraft and the complex backgrounds in remote sensing images. Existing remote sensing aircraft detection methods were mainly designed based on algorithms employed in general object detection methods. However, these methods either tend to ignore the key structure and size information of aircraft targets or have poor detection effects on densely distributed aircraft targets. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-task aircraft detection algorithm. Firstly, a multi-task joint training method is proposed, which provides richer semantic structure features for bounding box localization through landmark detection. Secondly, a multi-task inference algorithm is introduced that utilizes landmarks to provide additional supervision for bounding box NMS (non-maximum suppression) filtering, effectively reducing false positives. Finally, a novel loss function is proposed as a constrained optimization between bounding boxes and landmarks, which further improves aircraft detection accuracy. Experiments on the UCAS-AOD dataset demonstrated the state-of-the-art precision and efficiency of our proposed method compared to existing approaches. Rock classification provides vital information to geosciences and geological engineering practices. Reaping the benefits of the advances of computer vision-based deep learning artificial intelligence (AI) technology, this study aims to develop a next-generation convolutional neural network (CNN) to perform automatic rock classification. Two major challenging issues have been particularly addressed. First, most of the previous rock classifications are simply transfer learning of CNNs that are trained by life-like scenarios. Second, classifying rock types with similar textures leads to severe overfitting of CNNs. In this study, a novel CNN called HKUDES_Net is proposed and implemented to classify seven common Hong Kong rock types, namely fine-grained granite, medium-grained granite, coarse-grained granite, coarse ash tuff, fine ash tuff, feldsparphyric rhyolite, and granodiorite. With the aid of dynamic expansion, squeeze and excitation, and other strategies, HKUDES_Net can classify rock types with similar texture patterns/colors but different grain sizes. As compared with the other ten landmark CNNs and seven feature-based algorithms, HKUDES_Net has the best performance in precision (90.9%), recall (90.4%), and f1-score (90.5%). By implementing the alerting level, which restricts the training loss hovering above a small constant and prevents the validation loss from rising, the overfitting has been efficiently eliminated. The proposal and implementation of HKUDES_Net highlight the value of interdisciplinary research and will continuously pave the way for better coupling AI and geosciences. A systematic review of the literature was conducted following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines to identify relevant research work on anti-collision systems for underground mining. The selected studies were analyzed and categorized based on the types of sensors used and their advantages and limitations in deep underground environments. This study provides an overview of the anti-collision systems used in underground mining, including cameras and lidar sensors, and their effectiveness in detecting pedestrians in deep underground environments. Anti-collision systems based on computer vision are effective in reducing accidents and fatalities in underground mining operations. However, their performance is influenced by factors, such as lighting conditions, sensor placement, and sensor range. The findings of this study have significant implications for the mining industry and could help improve safety in underground mining operations. In the field of medical imaging, the division of an image into meaningful structures using image segmentation is an essential step for pre-processing analysis. Many studies have been carried out to solve the general problem of the evaluation of image segmentation results. One of the main focuses in the computer vision field is based on artificial intelligence algorithms for segmentation and classification, including machine learning and deep learning approaches. The main drawback of supervised segmentation approaches is that a large dataset of ground truth validated by medical experts is required. Road condition monitoring (RCM) has been a demanding strategic research area in maintaining a large network of transport infrastructures. With advancements in computer vision and data mining techniques along with high computing resources, several innovative pavement distress evaluation systems have been developed in recent years. The majority of these technologies employ next-generation distributed sensors and vision-based artificial intelligence (AI) methodologies to evaluate, classify and localize pavement distresses using the measured data. This paper presents an exhaustive and systematic literature review of these technologies in RCM that have been published from 2017–2022 by utilizing next-generation sensors, including contact and noncontact measurements. The various methodologies and innovative contributions of the existing literature reviewed in this paper, together with their limitations, promise a futuristic insight for researchers and transport infrastructure owners. These technologies can create virtual facilities and environments for patients, physicians, and researchers to access a variety of medical services. Experiencing an immersive interaction between doctors and patients can be another considerable advantage of these technologies, which can dramatically improve the efficiency of the healthcare system. In addition, offering these amenities through a blockchain system enhances reliability, safety, openness, and the ability to trace data exchange. It also brings about cost savings through improved efficiencies. In this paper, a digital twin of cervical vertebral maturation (CVM), which is a critical factor in a wide range of dental surgery, within a blockchain-based metaverse platform is designed and implemented. A DL method has been used to create an automated diagnosis process for the upcoming CVM images in the proposed platform. This method includes MobileNetV2, a mobile architecture that improves the performance of mobile models in multiple tasks and benchmarks. The proposed technique of digital twinning is simple, fast, and suitable for physicians and medical specialists, as well as for adapting to the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) due to its low latency and computing costs. One of the important contributions of the current study is to use of DL-based computer vision as a real-time measurement method so that the proposed digital twin does not require additional sensors. Furthermore, a comprehensive conceptual framework for creating digital twins of CVM based on MobileNetV2 within a blockchain ecosystem has been designed and implemented, showing the applicability and suitability of the introduced approach. The high performance of the proposed model on a collected small dataset demonstrates that low-cost deep learning can be used for diagnosis, anomaly detection, better design, and many more applications of the upcoming digital representations. Using artificial intelligence (AI) and the IoT (Internet of Things) is a primary focus of applied engineering research to improve agricultural efficiency. This review paper summarizes the engagement of artificial intelligence models and IoT techniques in detecting, classifying, and counting cotton insect pests and corresponding beneficial insects. The effectiveness and limitations of AI and IoT techniques in various cotton agricultural settings were comprehensively reviewed. This review indicates that insects can be detected with an accuracy of between 70 and 98% using camera/microphone sensors and enhanced deep learning algorithms. However, despite the numerous pests and beneficial insects, only a few species were targeted for detection and classification by AI and IoT systems. Not surprisingly, due to the challenges of identifying immature and predatory insects, few studies have designed systems to detect and characterize them. The location of the insects, sufficient data size, concentrated insects on the image, and similarity in species appearance are major obstacles when implementing AI. Similarly, IoT is constrained by a lack of effective field distance between sensors when targeting insects according to their estimated population size. It is considered that 1 in 10 adults worldwide have diabetes. Diabetic foot ulcers are some of the most common complications of diabetes, and they are associated with a high risk of lower-limb amputation and, as a result, reduced life expectancy. Timely detection and periodic ulcer monitoring can considerably decrease amputation rates. Recent research has demonstrated that computer vision can be used to identify foot ulcers and perform non-contact telemetry by using ulcer and tissue area segmentation. However, the applications are limited to controlled lighting conditions, and expert knowledge is required for dataset annotation. This paper reviews the latest publications on the use of artificial intelligence for ulcer area detection and segmentation. The PRISMA methodology was used to search for and select articles, and the selected articles were reviewed to collect quantitative and qualitative data. Qualitative data were used to describe the methodologies used in individual studies, while quantitative data were used for generalization in terms of dataset preparation and feature extraction. Publicly available datasets were accounted for, and methods for preprocessing, augmentation, and feature extraction were evaluated. It was concluded that public datasets can be used to form a bigger, more diverse datasets, and the prospects of wider image preprocessing and the adoption of augmentation require further research. The acceptance of railway systems as a frontier transportation infrastructure can be attributed to their reliability, safety, and support for green technology. With the recent advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML), the maintenance of railroad transportation systems has taken a different direction, especially in the analysis of railroad big data, leading to real-time processing and detection of railway problems. However, using limited track data may result in overfitting, hindering the accurate implementation of robust models. In this paper, the authors consider generative adversarial networks (GANs) with keen consideration for possible covariate shifts to improve track defect detection and decrease data imbalance.
