Allergy and respiratory disorders are common in young athletic individuals. In the context of elite sport, it is essential to secure an accurate diagnosis in order to optimize health and performance. It is also important, however, to consider the potential impact or consequences of these disorders, in recreationally active individuals engaging in structured exercise and/or physical activity to maintain health and well‐being across the lifespan. This EAACI Task Force was therefore established, to develop an up‐to‐date, research‐informed position paper, detailing the optimal approach to the diagnosis and management of common exercise‐related allergic and respiratory conditions. The recommendations are informed by a multidisciplinary panel of experts including allergists, pulmonologists, physiologists and sports physicians. The report is structured as a concise, practically focussed document, incorporating diagnostic and treatment algorithms, to provide a source of reference to aid clinical decision‐making. This paper presents interdisciplinary research exploring the development of inclusive multisensory science books, communicating immunology data for blind, low‐vision and diverse‐needs audiences. The research adopted an inductive theory‐building approach, practice‐based art methods and music and design methods, leveraging the lived experience of a legally blind artist. The research also involved designers and scientists in a cocreation process, producing books that incorporate tactile artworks, Braille‐inspired protein models, image sonification and interaction. Two multisensory book titles, "The Heroes Within You: A Multisensory Exploration of Infection and Immunity" and "My Goodness: A Multisensory Exploration of Nutrition and Immunity", were developed for the Monash Sensory Science 2023 Exhibition Day. The books offer an innovative way to make science and art more accessible and engaging, addressing the limitations of traditional museum methods. Feedback from audiences has been positive, emphasizing the fascination, sensory engagement and ease of understanding. This paper highlights the potential for an interdisciplinary and inclusive approach to science and art, demonstrating the value of multisensory books as tools for science communication. Art is a powerful tool for conveying scientific discovery. Despite the perceived gap between art and science, as highlighted by CP Snow and others, examples of art communicating science can be found in the ancient world, the Renaissance and contemporary data visualization, demonstrating an enduring and historic connection. However, much of science relies on visual elements, excluding those with blindness, low vision and diverse needs, resulting in their low representation in STEM discourse. This paper introduces a novel science and art collaboration in the form of an exhibition program exploring the concepts of Immunology and Biomedicine to blind and vision‐impaired audiences, capitalizing on the lived experience of a legally blind artist. Employing multisensory design, art and co‐creation methodologies, it transcends traditional vision‐based science communication, showcasing the potential for multisensory art to bridge the gap at the intersection of science and inclusion. In a number of applied problems (immunology, epidemiology, virology, etc.), there is a need to study the dynamics of the trajectories of the compositions of the Lotka-Volterra mappings. In this paper, some variants of these compositions are considered, in particular, the dynamics of the trajectories of the compositions of the Lotka-Volterra mappings acting in a two-dimensional simplex, with transitive tournaments, which can be applied in the study of these processes. Objective: To review the literature comparing functional endoscopic sinus surgery to dupilumab for the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, in terms of symptom control, cost-effectiveness and complications. Method: A literature review was conducted using PubMed, ScienceDirect and Cochrane databases. Data were extracted manually. Results: A total of six papers relevant to the main objective were found. Conclusion: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps has a significant impact on patients' quality of life. Both functional endoscopic sinus surgery and dupilumab achieve comparable disease control and result in good symptom relief. Dupilumab is far more expensive than functional endoscopic sinus surgery and is not considered cost-effective for the time being. This is expected to change after 10 years when the drug patent expires. More research is needed to compare the complications of both treatment modalities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The nasopharyngeal tonsil, or often just simply the adenoids, form a pair of lymphatic tissue foci that are a component of Waldeyer's ring and are situated on the superoposterior side of the nasopharynx. Objective: This review's objective was to outline the anatomy and physiology of and immunology of the adenoids to understand the diseased states. Methods: We searched Science Direct, Google Scholar, and PubMed for Nasopharyngeal tonsil and Adenoids physiology, immunology and anatomy. The authors also reviewed references from pertinent literature, however only the most recent or comprehensive studies from 1999 to 2023 were included. Documents in languages other than English were disqualified due to lack of translation-related sources. Papers such as unpublished manuscripts, oral presentations, conference abstracts, and dissertations that were not part of larger scientific studies were excluded. Conclusion: Tonsillectomy and/or adenoids may be necessary for patient care if medical therapy fails. Even though tonsil and/or adenoidectomy are common operations, it is important to fully comprehend the architecture of these lymphoepithelial organs in order to reduce the possibility of uncommon but potentially dangerous consequences. Immunology courses are offered in the majors of biology, medicine, animal husbandry and food in Chinese colleges and universities. Due to the characteristics of multi-dimensional composition of immunology knowledge, most students are not easy to understand the logical relationship between key points and knowledge points in learning, and will encounter problems such as unable to keep up with the teaching pace, lack of confidence in learning, feeling complex association between the knowledge points of chapters, and not fully understanding the immunology knowledge points. The field of transplantation, including the specialized area of vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA), has been transformed since the first hand transplant in 1998. The major challenge in VCA comes from the need for life-long immunosuppressive therapy due to its non-vital nature and a high rate of systemic complications. Ongoing research is focused on immunosuppressive therapeutic strategies to avoid toxicity and promote donor-specific tolerance. This includes studying the balance between tolerance and effector mechanisms in immune modulation, particularly the role of costimulatory signals in T lymphocyte activation. Costimulatory signals during T cell activation can have either stimulatory or inhibitory effects. Interfering with T cell activation through costimulation blockade strategies shows potential in avoiding rejection and prolonging the survival of transplanted organs. This review paper aims to summarize current data on the immunologic role of costimulatory blockade in the field of transplantation. It focuses on strategies that can be applied in vascularized composite allotransplantation, offering insights into novel methods for enhancing the success and safety of these procedures. There is significant variation in practice when managing couples with recurrent miscarriage (RM), with guidelines differing on the definition of RM, recommended investigations, and treatment options. In the absence of evidence‐based guidance, and following on from a paper by the authors—FIGO Good Practice Recommendations on the use of progesterone in the management of recurrent first‐trimester miscarriage—this narrative review aims to propose a global holistic approach. Artificial intelligence (AI) plays a more and more important role in our everyday life due to the advantages that it brings when used, such as 24/7 availability, a very low percentage of errors, ability to provide real time insights, or performing a fast analysis. AI is increasingly being used in clinical medical and dental healthcare analyses, with valuable applications, which include disease diagnosis, risk assessment, treatment planning, and drug discovery. This paper presents a narrative literature review of AI use in healthcare from a multi-disciplinary perspective, specifically in the cardiology, allergology, endocrinology, and dental fields. The paper highlights data from recent research and development efforts in AI for healthcare, as well as challenges and limitations associated with AI implementation, such as data privacy and security considerations, along with ethical and legal concerns. The regulation of responsible design, development, and use of AI in healthcare is still in early stages due to the rapid evolution of the field. However, it is our duty to carefully consider the ethical implications of implementing AI and to respond appropriately. Immunology is a notoriously complex field with distinct concepts and terminology. Yet immunologists regularly and effectively collaborate with other researchers, notably clinicians and experts in population health. How does such "collaboration without convergence" work? This paper offers an answer. Immunology exhibits three features that support collaboration in the absence of major consensus on theories, methods, or concepts. These are a multifaceted target of inquiry, therapeutic aspirations, and a clear interdisciplinary pathway. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a lung disease caused by limited airflow that leads to difficulty breathing. It is a major chronic disease that affects human quality of life and even endangers life. However, the exact cause of COPD is still unclear. The present study aimed to identify characteristic genes in COPD, assess the level of immune cell infiltration in COPD samples, and explore the association between characteristic genes and infiltrating immune cells. In this paper, we used dataset GSE76925 to identify 452 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) (including 407 downregulated and 45 upregulated DEGs). Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis showed that the functions mainly include leukocyte migration, protein folding, negative regulation of cell activation, transcription regulator complex, collagen−containing extracellular matrix, RNA polymerase II transcription regulator complex, guanyl nucleotide binding, guanyl ribonucleotide binding, ubiquitin protein ligase binding, etc. In the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis, pathways identified by DEGs mainly focused on Basal transcription factors, Arachidonic acid metabolism, Nucleocytoplasmic transport, Glutamatergic synapse, Ether lipid metabolism, alpha−Linolenic acid metabolism, etc. Next, we constructed a weighted gene co-expression network, identified six gene modules, found that the module with the highest correlation was the MEturquoise, and obtained 51 hub module genes. Further, 43 overlapping genes were obtained after the intersection of 452 DEGs and 51 hub genes in MEturquoise module, and seven characteristic DEGs (C-DEGs) (LOC649214, LOC440563, LOC643431, LOC642585, KRT18P17, LOC648057 and UBASH3B) were identified by the Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression method. In addition, we assessed the infiltration of 28 immune cells in 111 COPD samples and 40 NC samples, calculated and visualized the correlation between the expression of 7 C-DEGs and the infiltration level of 28 immune cells. These results will contribute to our further understanding of the molecular immunopathogenesis of COPD and have potential reference value for the development of molecular drug targets in the future. This study is a follow-up to the analysis of an inquiry-based learning activity applied to students in a public university in Brazil. We advocate that an effective education in immunology must incorporate elements that are essential to research in the area, such as generating and analysing data. These elements would empower students to apply science reasoning to face professional challenges. Our protocol included two of these elements: experimentation and abstraction. The utmost aim was to examine the production of argument by groups engaged in three different activities: 1) performing experiments and analysing the data generated; 2) reading papers on the subject (activation of complement) prior to the activities in (1), and 3) reading papers on the subject and analysing data generated by others. Our analysis reveals that guided scientific paper presentation was more influential than performing an experiment in terms of production of complex arguments. Additionally, we found that some groups merely described the data rather than relating the obtained data to the original question that led to the experiments. The findings described herein show the importance of engaging students in procedures that actually generate knowledge and thus incorporate scientific reasoning and discourse in higher immunology education. Pain and mechanical stimulation are thought to be alarm systems that alert the brain to physical abnormalities. When we experience unpleasant feelings in infected or traumatized tissues, our awareness is directed to the afflicted region, prompting activities such as resting or licking the tissue. Despite extensive research into the molecular biology of nociceptors, it was unclear whether their role was limited to the generation and transmission of unpleasant feelings or whether they actively modulate the pathogenesis of infected or traumatized tissues. Recently, it has become clear how the sensory and immune systems interact with one another and share similar receptors and ligands to modify the pathogenesis of various diseases. In this paper, we summarize the mechanisms of crosstalk between the sensory and immune systems and the impact of this new interdisciplinary field, which should be dubbed 'senso-immunology,' on medical science. Pathways to tenured teaching positions are fraught with obstacles and require a combination of luck, perseverance and a competitive track record. Despite this, there are strategies that one can employ to increase your chances of success but, first and foremost, one must be an excellent communicator. Excellent communicators make for talented teachers, but one must also enjoy teaching or risk energy, i.e. your students will lack (co)stimulation. Academics who are new to teaching immunology need support from their community of practise (such as ASI Education Special Interest Groups) given that immunology can be challenging to teach. For every rule that we teach our students, there are equally many exceptions that confuse and confound. The complexity of our discipline also owes to the highly conceptual curriculum and abstract discipline language. To this end, this work seeks to provide advice to current and aspiring early‐career immunology educators, utilising lessons learnt from my experience as an academic over the last decade. Topics include: understanding the needs of the student cohort; active learning strategies to engage students; ethical dilemmas for publishing pedagogical papers and the attainability of tenure. Like exogenously processed antigens, there is no hard and fast rule about one's pathway to academia; some take the canonical road (MHC class II) and others break the rules (cross‐presentation). Objective: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic precipitated a major shift in the use of telehealth in Australia. The changes highlighted gaps in our knowledge regarding the efficacy of, and clinician attitudes to, the use of telehealth. The current study expands and deepens the available evidence as a result of being collected in unique circumstances that removed one of the major barriers (lack of Medicare rebates) and also one major enablers (willingness) of telehealth uptake. Methods: Using a semi-structured interview, we invited clinicians (N = 39) to share their perspectives, attitudes and experiences of using telehealth. Topics covered included perceptions of the strengths and challenges of telehealth, and how experience of using telehealth during the COVID-19 pandemic had influenced clinicians' views and intentions regarding their future practice. Participants included clinicians from five disciplines across public and private practice: paediatrics, neurology, immunology, rural general practice, and orthopaedics. Results: We found three key dimensions for consideration when assessing the suitability of telehealth for ongoing practice: the attributes of the patient population, the attributes of the clinical context and environment, and the risks and benefits of a telehealth approach. These findings map to the existing literature and allow us to infer that the experiences of clinicians who previously would have chosen telehealth did not differ significantly from those of our 'pandemic-conscripted' clinicians. Conclusions: Our findings map clearly to the existing literature and allow us to infer that the experiences of the clinicians who have chosen telehealth (and are already represented in the literature) did not differ significantly from those trying out telehealth under the unique circumstances of the removal of the Medicare Benefits Scheme barrier and external pressure that over-rides the 'willingness' enabling factor in uptake decisions. What is known about the topic? Clinician and patient experiences of telehealth use have already been documented in contexts where both clinician and patient have opted-in to that process. What does this paper add? The paper adds data on clinician experience across a range of specialities, from a context (pandemic public-heath measures) where the choice element was reduced for both patient and clinician. Introduction: The mechanisms of action of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) for multiple sclerosis (MS) are complex and involve an interplay of immune system components. People with MS (PwMS) may lack a clear understanding of the immunological pathways involved in MS and its treatment; effective communication between healthcare professionals (HCPs) and PwMS is needed to facilitate shared decision-making when discussing the disease and selecting DMTs and is particularly important in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) era. Methods: In this patient-authored two-part review, we performed a targeted literature search to assess the need for better communication between HCPs and PwMS regarding treatment selection, and also conducted a qualitative survey of four patient and care-partner authors to obtain insights regarding their understanding of and preferences for the treatment and management of MS. Results: Following a search of the Embase and MEDLINE databases using Ovid in June 2020, an analysis of 40 journal articles and conference abstracts relating to patient empowerment and decision-making in DMT selection for MS showed a preference for safety and efficacy of treatments, followed by autonomy and convenience of administration. A need for better communication between HCPs and PwMS during treatment selection to improve patient satisfaction was also identified. The open survey responses from the patient authors revealed a need for greater involvement in decision-making processes and desire for improved communication and information tools. Conclusions: This targeted literature search and phenomenological review confirms PwMS preferences for empowered decision-making in disease management and treatment selection, to optimize independence, safety, and efficacy. It also identifies an unmet need for improved communication and information tools that convey MS information in a relatable manner. Furthermore, this review seeks to address this unmet need by providing plain language figures and descriptions of MS immune mechanisms that can be used to facilitate discussions between HCPs and PwMS. Plain Language Summary: In multiple sclerosis (MS), there are different cells in the immune system that contribute to the disease. The main cells in the immune system are T and B cells. People with MS (PwMS) might not be familiar with details about the immune system, and healthcare professionals might not always communicate details about how treatments work clearly to PwMS when choosing treatments with them. It is important for PwMS to have all the information they need to help make decisions about treatments. This information needs to be given in a way they can understand. This is especially important during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. In this paper, we first looked at what research has already been published about what is most important to PwMS when making treatment decisions. The existing research says that safety and effectiveness are the most important things and that PwMS prefer treatments that they can take themselves. PwMS also need better communication and information from doctors to make decisions and to help explain how MS treatments work in the body. Next, we gave a survey to the patients who are authors of this paper to ask about what is important to them when making treatment decisions. Their answers were very similar to the existing research. Overall, PwMS need better communication from healthcare professionals about the immune system. This paper also includes plain language descriptions and figures to help healthcare professionals explain and discuss the importance of the immune system in MS with PwMS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At every level, the study of organic life underlies the relational nature of its subject. Whether one looks at an organism as a whole and its relationship to its environment or other members of its species, or at the component parts of the organism at an organ system, cellular or even molecular level, there is an externally referential and thus relational nature to lived beings. There is perhaps no place as fruitful to illustrate this relationality than the field of immunology. This paper argues that close attention to the phenomenon of relationality that is evidenced by natural scientific research provides an important occasion to demonstrate the wide-ranging validity of the sort of relational ontology defended by the tradition of phenomenological personalism. Such intersections as one discerns in interdisciplinary engagement between personalist phenomenology and immunology, moreover, can provide a basis for further clarification of the relation of person to the world of nature and vice versa in ways that call into question the dominance of reductive philosophies of nature. Background: Circadian rhythms are important for all aspects of biology; virtually every aspect of biological function varies according to time of day. Although this is well known, variation across the day is also often ignored in the design and reporting of research. For this review, we analyzed the top 50 cited papers across 10 major domains of the biological sciences in the calendar year 2015. We repeated this analysis for the year 2019, hypothesizing that the awarding of a Nobel Prize in 2017 for achievements in the field of circadian biology would highlight the importance of circadian rhythms for scientists across many disciplines, and improve time-of-day reporting. Results: Our analyses of these 1000 empirical papers, however, revealed that most failed to include sufficient temporal details when describing experimental methods and that few systematic differences in time-of-day reporting existed between 2015 and 2019. Overall, only 6.1% of reports included time-of-day information about experimental measures and manipulations sufficient to permit replication. Conclusions: Circadian rhythms are a defining feature of biological systems, and knowing when in the circadian day these systems are evaluated is fundamentally important information. Failing to account for time of day hampers reproducibility across laboratories, complicates interpretation of results, and reduces the value of data based predominantly on nocturnal animals when extrapolating to diurnal humans. Objective: Bioinformatics analyses have been becoming important research tools in the field of life science since 2000. New tools have been developed for the detection of allergens in food sources. This study investigated potential allergen proteins similar to the endochitinase class 1(Pers a 1) protein found in avocado using bioinformatics analysis tools. Materials and Methods: The potential allergens were examined with four different in silico tools: Clustal W for multiple sequence comparison, Swiss-MODEL for homology modeling, ProtParam for comparing protein parameters, and AlgPred for allergen prediction. Results: In silico analyses revealed high rates of similarities in protein sequences among the studied species. The highest percent identity was found in Cinnamomum micranthum f. kanehirae as 97.55 while the lowest percent identity was found in Diospyros kaki as 70.23. It is very important to note that 9 of the 10 potential allergen species investigated are plats consumed in daily life and these species were identified as allergens. According to the algorithm of BLAST search on allergen representative peptides (ARPs), ARPs were found in eight potential allergen proteins except for Prunus avium and Citrus unshiu. The ARP sequence related to Persea americana is LQLTWNYNYGAAGNSIGFNGLSNP. Conclusion: People who are allergic to avocado (Persea americana) may be advised to be careful while consuming foods such as Phoenix dactylifera, Allium sativum, Citrus unshiu, Diospyros kaki, and Spinacia oleracea. The initiation and progression of tumors are complex. The cancer evolution-development hypothesis holds that the dysregulation of immune balance is caused by the synergistic effect of immune genetic factors and environmental factors that stimulate and maintain non-resolving inflammation. Throughout the cancer development process, this inflammation creates a microenvironment for the evolution and development of cancer. Research on the inflammatory tumor microenvironment (TME) explains the initiation and progression of cancer and guides anti-cancer immunotherapy. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) can detect the transcription levels of cells at the single-cell resolution level, reveal the heterogeneity and evolutionary trajectory of infiltrated immune cells and cancer cells, and provide insight into the composition and function of each cell group in the inflammatory TME. Erythema multiforme (EM) also known as polymorph erythema is an acute skin disease of immunological nature with or without mucous membrane involvement, which may behave as chronic recurrent. It presents with distinctive targets like skin lesions, often together with ulcers or bullae in mucous membranes (oral, genital or ocular). Among its clinical forms are: a minor form characterized by a mild skin syndrome and its major form that manifests as a skin disease with marked mucosal damage. Among its main differential diagnoses are Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Lyell Syndrome (Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEC)). It has an estimated incidence < 1%, with its major form being slightly more frequent than its minor form (0. 8-6 per million/year). It can occur at any age, presenting a peak incidence at the age between 20 and 30 years, with a slight predominance of males with a 3:2 ratio, without racial predilection. Its presentation in pediatric age is rare, even more so in early childhood. Minor recurrent EM is more common in this population. This paper reports a case of EM in the pediatric population as a rare form of exanthematic presentation, addressed at the Department of Pediatrics of the Complejo Asistencial Victor Rios Ruiz (CAVRR) in the city of Los Angeles, Chile this year. This paper presents a mathematical model for tumour-immune response interactions in the perspective of immunotherapy by immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). The model is of the nonlocal integro-differential Lotka-Volterra type, in which heterogeneity of the cell populations is taken into account by structuring variables that are continuous internal traits (aka phenotypes) present in each individual cell. These represent a lumped "aggressiveness", i.e., for tumour cells, malignancy understood as the ability to thrive in a viable state under attack by immune cells or drugs – which we propose to identify as a potential of de-differentiation–, and for immune cells, ability to kill tumour cells, in other words anti-tumour efficacy. We analyse the asymptotic behaviour of the model in the absence of treatment. By means of two theorems, we characterise the limits of the integro-differential system under an a priori convergence hypothesis. We illustrate our results with a few numerical simulations, which show that our model reproduces the three Es of immunoediting: elimination, equilibrium, and escape. Periparturient diseases continue to be the greatest challenge to both farmers and dairy cows. They are associated with a decrease in productivity, lower profitability, and a negative impact on cows' health as well as public health. This review article discusses the pathophysiology and diagnostic opportunities of mastitis, the most common disease of dairy cows. To better understand the disease, we dive deep into the causative agents, traditional paradigms, and the use of new technologies for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mastitis. This paper takes a systems biology approach by highlighting the relationship of mastitis with other diseases and introduces the use of omics sciences, specifically metabolomics and its analytical techniques. Concluding, this review is backed up by multiple studies that show how earlier identification of mastitis through predictive biomarkers can benefit the dairy industry and improve the overall animal health. Pernicious anemia is a megaloblastic type of anemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency, mediated by intrinsic factor deficiency, associated with atrophic body gastritis, confirmed by the presence of gastric body atrophy and parietal cells pathology in the stomach. It shares with helicobacter pylori gastritis the autoimmune character and in both exist some autoantibodies. Methods: A search for papers on epidemiology and pathophysiology of pernicious anemia was conducted using the keywords: Helicobacter pylori, gastritis, anemia, vitamin B12, pathophysiology, epidemiology. Then snowballing technique was used to find more references. Results: Shared features of both types of gastritis and evidence from the published papers confirmed that helicobacter pylori play a role in the pathophysiology of pernicious anemia. Conclusion: There is some evidence in the literature that some individuals with specific susceptibility could develop pernicious anemia when infected by helicobacter pylori gastritis. Introduction: Bone loss is a common feature in several autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Indeed, the high levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines seem to enhance bone resorption and to diminish bone formation, thus producing an uncoupling between osteoclast and osteoblast function and favoring the onset of juxtarticular as well as systemic osteoporosis. Many papers underline the high prevalence of osteoporosis in RA, as well as the negative correlation between interleukin 6 (IL-6) serum levels and bone mineral density (BMD). The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of one-year treatment with tocilizumab (TCZ), the first approved IL-6 receptor inhibitor, in reducing bone loss in RA. Material and methods: We enrolled 18 patients fulfilling 2010 ACR and EULAR criteria for RA from our arthritis outpatient clinic, assessing clinical and biochemical parameters during a 12-month period. The patients received TCZ 8 mg/kg i.v. every 4 weeks and underwent dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) for the measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) at baseline and at the end of study. Serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocytes sedimentation rate (ESR), IL-6, serum CrossLaps, osteoprotegerin (OPG), receptor activator of nuclear factor κβ ligand (RANK-L) and dickkopf-1 (DKK-1) were measured at baseline, at 6 months and 1 year. Results: No significant difference in IL-6, RANK-L, DKK-1, OPG and serum CrossLaps levels between baseline, 6 months and 1 year were found. A significant increase of lumbar spine BMD was evidenced after 1 year of TCZ treatment. No difference in total body and femoral neck BMD was documented the end of the study. Introduction: An evidence synthesis approach compiling biological/laboratory data is effective in advancing health‐related knowledge. However, this approach is still underused in the oral health field. Methods: This commentary discusses the opportunities and challenges of systematic and scoping reviews of laboratory data in dentistry. Special focus is on the potential of these reviews to elucidate etiological and treatment concepts of oral diseases, such as periodontitis and peri‐implantitis. Results: The following difficulties associated with such studies are discussed: (i) selection of ideal study design, (ii) assessment of "risk of bias" and definition of "certainty of evidence", (iii) evidence assembly and summary, and (iv) the paper review process. Discussion: Despite those challenges, high‐quality reviews integrating laboratory data may generate relevant scientific information and help identify new avenues for future investigations. Epitopes are short amino acid sequences that define the antigen signature to which an antibody or T cell receptor binds. In light of the current pandemic, epitope analysis and prediction are paramount to improving serological testing and developing vaccines. In this paper, known epitope sequences from SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2, and other Coronaviridae were leveraged to identify additional antigen regions in 62K SARS-CoV-2 genomes. Additionally, we present epitope distribution across SARS-CoV-2 genomes, locate the most commonly found epitopes, and discuss where epitopes are located on proteins and how epitopes can be grouped into classes. The mutation density of different protein regions is presented using a big data approach. It was observed that there are 112 B cell and 279 T cell conserved epitopes between SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV, with more diverse sequences found in Nucleoprotein and Spike glycoprotein. Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is currently an urgent public health problem as high morbidity from the virus leaves populations with negative physical, social, and economic impacts. CHIKV has the potential to affect every organ of an individual, leaving patients with lifelong impairments which negatively affect their quality of life. In this review, we show the importance of CHIKV in research and public health by demonstrating the immunopathology of CHIKV as it presents in different organ systems. Papers used in this review were found on PubMed, using "chikungunya and [relevant organ system]". There is a significant inflammatory response during CHIKV infection which affects several organ systems, such as the brain, heart, lungs, kidneys, skin, and joints, and the immune response to CHIKV in each organ system is unique. Whilst there is clinical evidence to suggest that serious complications can occur, there is ultimately a lack of understanding of how CHIKV can affect different organ systems. There have been unprecedented advances in the identification of new treatment targets for chronic hepatitis B that are being developed with the goal of achieving functional cure in patients who would otherwise require lifelong nucleoside analogue treatment. Many of the new investigational therapies either directly target the immune system or are anticipated to impact immunity indirectly through modulation of the viral lifecycle and antigen production. While new viral biomarkers (HBV RNA, HBcAg, small, middle, large HBs isoforms) are proceeding through validation steps in clinical studies, immunological biomarkers are non-existent outside of clinical assays for antibodies to HBs, HBc and HBe. To develop clinically applicable immunological biomarkers to measure mechanisms of action, inform logical combination strategies, and guide clinical management for use and discontinuation of immune-targeting drugs, immune assays must be incorporated into phase I/II clinical trials. This paper will discuss the importance of sample collection, the assays available for immunological analyses, their advantages/disadvantages and suggestions for their implementation in clinical trials. Careful consideration must be given to ensure appropriate immunological studies are included as a primary component of the trial with deeper immunological analysis provided by ancillary studies. Standardising immunological assays and data obtained from clinical trials will identify biomarkers that can be deployed in the clinic, independently of specialised immunology laboratories. Simple Summary: This paper presents an extended version of the Cox regression model to examine heterogeneous effects of risk factors on disease subtypes defined by a continuous biomarker. This approach can be easily applied to cancer studies and is accessible to researchers via user-friendly R scripts. Molecular pathologic diagnosis is important in clinical (oncology) practice. Integration of molecular pathology into epidemiological methods (i.e., molecular pathological epidemiology) allows for investigating the distinct etiology of disease subtypes based on biomarker analyses, thereby contributing to precision medicine and prevention. However, existing approaches for investigating etiological heterogeneity deal with categorical subtypes. We aimed to fully leverage continuous measures available in most biomarker readouts (gene/protein expression levels, signaling pathway activation, immune cell counts, microbiome/microbial abundance in tumor microenvironment, etc.). We present a cause-specific Cox proportional hazards regression model for evaluating how the exposure–disease subtype association changes across continuous subtyping biomarker levels. Utilizing two longitudinal observational prospective cohort studies, we investigated how the association of alcohol intake (a risk factor) with colorectal cancer incidence differed across the continuous values of tumor epigenetic DNA methylation at long interspersed nucleotide element-1 (LINE-1). The heterogeneous alcohol effect was modeled using different functions of the LINE-1 marker to demonstrate the method's flexibility. This real-world proof-of-principle computational application demonstrates how the new method enables visualizing the trend of the exposure effect over continuous marker levels. The utilization of continuous biomarker data without categorization for investigating etiological heterogeneity can advance our understanding of biological and pathogenic mechanisms. The human microbiota functions at the interface between diet, medication-use, lifestyle, host immune development and health. It is therefore closely aligned with many of the recognised modifiable factors that influence bone mass accrual in the young, and bone maintenance and skeletal decline in older populations. While understanding of the relationship between micro-organisms and bone health is still in its infancy, two decades of broader microbiome research and discovery supports a role of the human gut microbiome in the regulation of bone metabolism and pathogenesis of osteoporosis as well as its prevention and treatment. Pre-clinical research has demonstrated biological interactions between the microbiome and bone metabolism. Furthermore, observational studies and randomized clinical trials have indicated that therapeutic manipulation of the microbiota by oral administration of probiotics may influence bone turnover and prevent bone loss in humans. In this paper, we summarize the content, discussion and conclusions of a workshop held by the Osteoporosis and Bone Research Academy of the Royal Osteoporosis Society in October, 2020. We provide a detailed review of the literature examining the relationship between the microbiota and bone health in animal models and in humans, as well as formulating the agenda for key research priorities required to advance this field. We also underscore the potential pitfalls in this research field that should be avoided and provide methodological recommendations to facilitate bridging the gap from promising concept to a potential cause and intervention target for osteoporosis. Bibliometricians emphasize on international collaboration to enhance the citation impact of research publications. However, Mathew Effect for Countries brings out that the citation impact is not uniformly distributed to all country affiliations. The present study explores whether international collaboration helps in neutralizing the origin of country bias. The study explores this with productivity, author affiliation and citation data from Scopus for the immunology papers for the year 2018. The data considered pertain to India and four comparator countries which are high on international collaboration, namely Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Furazolidone (FZD) is a widely used drug in human and veterinary medicine, and has antibacterial and antiprotozoal action. Although it is widely used as a therapy in various pathological conditions, studies on the efficacy of FZD associated with immune responses are still limited. In this review, we seek to describe which immunopharmacological responses are caused by the administration of FZD. The study followed the recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). A systematic review of clinical trials and in vitro and in vivo experimental studies was carried out, which resulted in 943 papers, of which 35 were considered eligible and, of these 35, 4 were selected for analysis. The studies listed indicated that administration of FZD can modulate pro- or anti-inflammatory pathways, with a probable increase in the expression of reactive oxygen species and a modulation of apoptotic pathways. Background: Childhood maltreatment confers higher risk of adulthood mental disease. However, the biological mechanism mediating this association remains largely unknown, with evidence suggesting dysregulation of the immune system as a possible biological mediator. The present paper conducted a case-control study to establish whether early-life adversity contributes to potentially pathogenic pro-inflammatory phenotypes in adult Panic Disorder (PD) individuals.Methods: Eighty-four PD patients and seventy-eight matched healthy controls were assessed for peripheral serum levels of interleukin (IL)-2R, IL-1β, IL-10, and for specific trauma types through child trauma questionnaire evaluation.Results: Analyses for specific types of trauma (sexual, physical or emotional abuse or neglect) revealed that these impact differentially the single inflammatory markers, and a significant association between physical abuse and the inflammatory marker IL-2R in PD patients was observed (β = 0.40, p = 0.013). The analysis demonstrates that childhood trauma contributes to a proinflammatory state in adulthood, with specific inflammatory profiles counting on the specific type of traumatic event.Conclusion: This study is unique in providing inflammatory biomarkers evidence of distinct biological modifications in PD in the presence or absence of exposure to childhood abuse. These results contribute to a better understanding of the extent of influence of differences in trauma exposure on pathophysiological processes in PD and may have implications for personalized medicine. Flow-cytometry has become increasingly popular to assess the haemocytes morphology and functions of marine molluscs. Indeed, haemocytes are the first line of defence of the immune system in molluscs and are used as a proxy for oyster health. Authors publishing in the field of flow-cytometry and molluscs health seemed to utilise the same methods for all model species used, independently of their geographical location in the world (temperate, tropical, etc.). Hence, this paper dived into flow-cytometry methodology and investigated if using different plates, different thresholds, different incubation times and temperatures as well as different fluorochromes concentrations affected the results. This study revealed that the cell count did not change when using different thresholds on the FSC-H parameter of the instrument but was affected by the plate type, the temperature of incubation, and the time of incubation. Indeed, non-adherent plates yielded the highest cell count and lower cell counts were associated with a higher temperature and a longer time of incubation. Furthermore, the haemocytes functions such as the phagocytosis, the lysosomal content, the intracellular oxidative activity, and the mitochondria activity were also affected by the temperature and the time of incubation. An increase in the phagocytosis capacity, lysosomal content and mitochondria activity was observed with a higher temperature. At the exception of the phagocytosis rate, all the other parameters such as the phagocytosis capacity, the intracellular oxidative activity, and the lysosomal content increased with a longer incubation time. We also showed that it is best to optimise the amount of fluorochromes used to avoid unnecessary background or non-specific staining. • The concentration of fluorochromes needs to be optimised for each new mollusc species. • The time of incubation influences the haemocytes count and functions. • The temperature of incubation influences the haemocytes count and functions. • The type of plate used can influence the haemocytes count. Controlling Salmonella in poultry is an ongoing food safety measure and while significant progress has been made, there is a need to continue to evaluate different strategies that include understanding Salmonella -poultry interaction, Salmonella -microbiota interactions, Salmonella genetics and response to adverse conditions, and preharvest and postharvest parameters that enable persistence. The purpose of this symposium is to discuss different strategies to consider from feed milling to the farm to the processing environment. This Poultry Science Association symposium paper is divided into 5 different sections that covers 1) immunological aspects of Salmonella control, 2) application of Salmonella genetics for targeted control strategies in poultry production, 3) improving poultry feed hygienics: utilizing feed manufacture techniques and equipment to improve feed hygienics, 4) practical on farm interventions for controlling Salmonella —what works and what may not work, and 5) monitoring and mitigating Salmonella in poultry. These topics elucidate the critical need to establish control strategies that will improve poultry gut health and limit conditions that exposes Salmonella to stress causing alterations to virulence and pathogenicity both at preharvest and postharvest poultry production. Charcot-Leyden crystal formation is closely associated with eosinophil extracellular trap cell death. As Harboe had done earlier, Natvig went to Kunkel's laboratory after his PhD. Harboe was involved when the Institute of Immunology and Rheumatology, Rikshospitalet, was established in 1967 with Natvig as its first director. Harboe became interested in the complement system quite early in his career and published his first paper on the topic in 1961.8 However, his major interest in complement returned when Tom Eirik Mollnes came to Harboe as a dr med. fellow in 1983.
