Abstract: Background: In a study to establish the interrater reliability of the Irish Nursing Minimum Data Set (I-NMDS) for mental health difficulties relating to the choice of reliability test statistic were encountered. Objectives: The objective of this paper is to highlight the difficulties associated with testing interrater reliability for an ordinal scale using a relatively homogenous sample and the recommended kw statistic. Method: One pair of mental health nurses completed the I-NMDS for mental health for a total of 30 clients attending a mental health day centre over a two-week period. Data was analysed using the kw and percentage agreement statistics. Results: A total of 34 of the 38 I-NMDS for mental health variables with lower than acceptable levels of kw reliability scores achieved acceptable levels of reliability according to their percentage agreement scores. Conclusion: The study findings implied that, due to the homogeneity of the sample, low variability within the data resulted in the ''base rate problem'' associated with the use of kw statistic. Conclusions point to the interpretation of kw in tandem with percentage agreement scores. Suggestions that kw scores were low due to chance agreement and that one should strive to use a study sample with known variability are queried. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• Violence against older people is one of the least known forms of violence, despite being significantly represented worldwide. • Nowadays, the most common types of violence are neglect and psychological or emotional abuse. • The keywords "elderly abuse" led to a low number of results, showing low interest in this topic. • This type of abuse is little reported and not adequately addressed. Social and structural changes are of primary importance. • This paper is a call to the scientific community to study epidemiological and medico-legal aspects of older people abuse. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes gender violence as a real global health problem with a major impact not only on the victims' physical and mental health, but also on the economics of the National Health System. Gender-based violence has been also extended to all types of subjects defined as fragile: children, elderly, women, men and disabled people. Older people abuse, more frequent in women, is a far less socially debated issue, with many forms: physical, sexual, psychological, abandonment, neglect, economic-financial, pharmaceutical, discriminatory, institutional. An electronic literature research was carried out search using the keywords "elderly abuse" on various online sources. The research showed low number of results and little attention to this topic in the scientific literature. The paper highlights how the theme of older people abuse is little reported and not adequately addressed in scientific literature and in real life, being a form of violence certainly underestimated by the public. Historically, nature has been considered central to healing and recovery in institutional mental health settings, with inpatient spaces designed to mirror the restorative forces nature may afford. Within contemporary healthcare architecture, the discourse surrounding nature's role has once again become prominent, especially in the concept of 'healing architecture'. While the literature on 'healing architecture' primarily considers how to connect recovery to nature through interventions in the built environment, less interest has been directed towards how nature is configured in design processes and what implications that has for the everyday experiences of patients and staff. In this paper we consider the design and implementation of one particular psychiatric hospital in Denmark to show that the 'nature' brought into this healthcare space can be experienced as anything but 'natural' and may reduce rather than enhance a felt sense of 'vitality' amongst patients. • This study reviewed forced family separation as the result of migration policies. • Forced family separation is linked to negative mental health outcomes for children. • Forced family separation is linked to adverse health among parents/caregivers. • There is racial and ethnic discrimination in punitive immigration policies. This paper aims to systematically look at the impacts of child separation from the primary caregiver as the result of migration policies from a racial and ethnic equity perspective. An online systematic search of Web of Science Core Collection, PsycINFO, PubMed, and Sociological Abstracts with keywords relevant to migration, family separation, and health outcomes was conducted in January 2022. The studies retrieved through the search were independently reviewed by two of the authors using the PRISMA checklist for scoping reviews and Covidence systematic review software. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study, 14 papers were included in the scoping review. We found that none of the studies were centered on a racial and ethnic equity framework. The reviewed studies showed that forced separation was associated with negative mental health outcomes including anxiety, depression, emotional and behavioral problems, post-traumatic stress or post-traumatic stress disorder, sleep disturbance, and stress among children. Similar adverse health outcomes were reported among caregivers. Background: Rumination and worry represent two types of repetitive negative thinking (RNT), and their predictive and maintaining roles are well-established in depression and anxiety, respectively. Furthermore, there is an emerging literature on the link between RNT and psychological wellbeing in the perinatal period.Methods: We conducted a scoping review of studies that have investigated the relationship between RNT and perinatal depression and anxiety. We identified 87 papers eligible for inclusion in the review; they included cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, as well as treatment evaluations (pilot trials and randomised controlled trials).Results: Cross-sectional studies provided evidence of an association between RNT (i.e., rumination and worry) and depression and anxiety, in both pregnancy and postpartum. Longitudinal findings were mixed. Whilst antenatal worry consistently predicted subsequent depression and anxiety (both later in pregnancy and postpartum), rumination did not consistently predict depression. However, there was some evidence that rumination interacted with other processes to predict later psychopathology. Three randomised controlled trials evaluated whether psychological treatments reduce RNT in the perinatal period, only one of which included a clinical sample.Limitations: No experimental investigations were eligible for inclusion in the review.Conclusions: Further studies are needed to further our understanding of the nature and role of RNT in pregnancy and postpartum, and its consequences for maternal mental health. These include (but are not limited to) experimental investigations, studies with large clinical samples, and RCTs evaluating the effectiveness of psychological interventions targeting RNT to prevent and treat perinatal depression and anxiety. Although the existing literature states that MVAs cause substantial negative mental health effects, summarizing and comparing these effects to understand their consequences could be more explored. This systematic literature review provides an overview of the literature surrounding the psychological consequences of MVAs to summarize and quantify their effects on mental health. The studies published in an English-language journal in the last 20 years (2001–2021) that present psychological consequences of MVAs were included. Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed databases were used for the literature search. The systematic literature search found 23 eligible studies. After identifying all relevant studies on the topic, we synthesized the applied psychological assessment methods and the psychological consequences of MVAs. Current gaps in the reviewed papers and what future research are needed are also discussed. Results indicated that negative psychological consequences following an MVA are substantial, with all studies pointing to negative consequences in at least one psychopathology. La spiritualité et la religion sont des domaines importants de la vie humaine qui suscitent l'intérêt des chercheurs en psychologie et en médecine à propos de leurs possibles effets sur la santé mentale. Depuis près de quarante ans, un nombre croissant de recherches ont montré les effets positifs du couple spiritualité/religion sur la santé mentale par l'intermédiaire de différents processus comme le coping, l'optimisation du lien social, le pouvoir des croyances et les bienfaits de certaines approches thérapeutiques utilisant la spiritualité. Cependant, au niveau des thérapies complémentaires et alternatives qui utilisent la spiritualité comme vecteur de soins ou qui s'inscrivent dans le champ de la spiritualité, on retrouve beaucoup de recherches qui se caractérisent par des biais méthodologiques importants ne permettant pas de valider la pertinence et l'efficacité systématique de ces thérapies. De ce fait, cette recherche a pour objectif d'étudier l'impact des approches thérapeutiques basées sur la spiritualité, sur la santé mentale au niveau de l'anxiété en suivant une démarche méthodologique rigoureuse de sélection des travaux de recherche. Nous avons effectué une revue de la littérature sur le sujet, de recherches contrôlées et randomisées. Quinze recherches ont été sélectionnées et ont montré des effets positifs des approches psycho-spirituelles sur la santé mentale, qu'il convient toutefois de nuancer en raison de limites méthodologiques importantes qui seront développées. Les approches de types TCC (Thérapies Comportementales et Cognitives) ayant la spiritualité comme thématique de base ressortent nettement de cette étude. Cela souligne la pertinence d'utilisation de la spiritualité dans une optique comportementale et cognitive dans le traitement de la relation entretenue avec les pensées et les émotions dans une optique de changements adaptatifs et de style de vie permettant une meilleure gestion de l'anxiété. La dimension de la spiritualité est riche en perspective d'accompagnement thérapeutique et les approches cognitives et comportementales de la 3e vague des TCC travaillant sur les relations entretenues avec les cognitions, les valeurs de vie et les émotions sont une piste sérieuse à exploiter dans le cadre de traitements psychothérapeutiques complémentaires pour le soin de l'anxiété. Spirituality and religion are important areas of human life that have aroused the interest of researchers in psychology and medicine with respect to their potential effects on mental health. A growing body of research for nearly 40 years has demonstrated the positive effects of spirituality/religion on mental health through different processes such as coping, optimization of social bonding, the power of beliefs, and the benefits of certain therapeutic approaches using spirituality. However, at the level of complementary and alternative therapies which use spirituality as a vector of care or which fall within the field of spirituality, we find considerable research which is characterized by significant methodological biases that do not allow us to validate the relevance and the systematic effectiveness of these approaches. Therefore, the objective of this study is to examine the effectiveness of therapeutic approaches based on spirituality in treating anxiety. We carried out a review of the literature on the subject that used randomized controlled trials. Fifteen studies that demonstrated positive effects of psycho-spiritual approaches on mental health were selected. These studies should, however, be put into perspective because of significant methodological limitations. Cognitive Based Therapies (CBT)-type approaches with spirituality as a basic theme clearly stand out from this study and underline the relevance of using spirituality from a behavioral and cognitive perspective in the treatment of the relationship maintained with thoughts and emotions in a context of adaptive and lifestyle changes, allowing for better management of the pathologies studied. The dimension of spirituality is rich with respect to therapeutic support, and the cognitive and behavioral approaches of the 3rd wave of CBT relying on the relationships maintained with cognition, life values and emotions are a serious avenue to be exploited within the framework of complementary psychotherapeutic treatments for anxiety. In this paper, we propose a structure hypergraph and an emotional lexicon for word representation. Our method can solve problems related to vocabulary size, grammatical representation of words, and the lack of an emotional lexicon. Natural Language Processing (NLP) and attention-based curriculum learning are then used in the developed model. The goal is to achieve semantic word representations using a graph model. Later, embedding is used to label the text using clinical procedures. The experimental results show the emotional word representation with the structure hypergraph. The bidirectional Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) architecture with an attention mechanism achieved a Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) value of 0.96. National guidance in the UK advises that psychosocial screening is completed for all inpatients admitted to burns services for over 24 h. Acceptable methods of psychosocial screening have been nationally agreed. However, little is known about how different services conduct psychosocial screening. Moreover, data related to validity and reliability are lacking. This paper describes a tiered approach to inpatient psychosocial screening in a UK adult burns service and considers implications for services. Data collected over a seven-year period was analysed retrospectively. Of 891 patients, almost half (48%; n = 431) were screened face-to-face by a graduate level assistant psychologist. Almost one quarter (23%, n = 205) were screened face-to-face by a qualified clinical psychologist. Around a fifth (22%, n = 193) were screened indirectly through psychological discussions at multi-disciplinary team meetings with a member of the burns clinical psychology team present. A minority of patients were screened face-to-face by liaison psychiatry, or by both liaison psychiatry and a clinical psychologist. Screening and delivery of low-level psychological interventions by a graduate level assistant psychologist appeared to protect resources of qualified clinical psychologists for the most distressed patients. Results highlight the value and cost-effectiveness of a tiered approach to psychosocial screening and in guiding subsequent intervention. Future study is needed in relation to inpatient psychosocial screening and its validity and reliability. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with a host of psychiatric and neurobehavioral problems. As mortality rates have declined for severe TBI, attention has turned to the cognitive, affective, and behavioral sequelae of injuries across the severity spectrum, which are often more disabling than residual physical effects. Moderate and severe TBI can cause personality changes including impulsivity, severe irritability, affective instability, and apathy. Mild TBI, once considered a largely benign phenomenon, is now known to be associated with a range of affective symptoms, with suicidality, and with worsening or new onset of several psychiatric disorders including posttraumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder. Repetitive head impacts, often in athletic contexts, are now believed to be associated with a number of emotional and behavioral sequelae. The nature and etiology of mental health manifestations of TBI (including a combination of brain dysfunction and psychological trauma and interrelationships between cognitive, affective, and physical symptoms) are complex and have been a focus of recent epidemiological and mechanistic studies. These findings underscore the mental health repercussions of online racial discrimination, the role of these exposures in driving racial inequities, and the need for additional research, as well as improved policy and clinical practice, to address these issues. In this paper, we highlight 3 key considerations for further advancing research on online racial discrimination: (1) implementation of an intersectional framework; (2) examination of vicarious experiences of online racial discrimination; and (3) identification of protective factors (eg, racial socialization). • A systematic literature review was undertaken to critically synthesise the literature related to the personality, well-being and mental health of social, domestic, pleasure and commuting car drivers. • Findings reveal that in parallel with the research pertaining to professional drivers, anxiety, stress and depression were predictive of poor driving outcomes. • A qualitative study revealed that driving discourtesy by others not only induced stress reactions, but also led to riskier driving practice. • Higher levels of well-being and life satisfaction appear to safeguard against engagement with deliberate driving violations. • There are several lacunas in the existing literature. Longitudinal, multivariate research is required to provide causal attributions, whilst controlling for the established predictors of unfavourable driving outcomes. The purpose was to provide a systematic review of the literature related to the personality and well-being of social, domestic, pleasure and commuting (SDP&C) car drivers. The following databases were searched: PsychINFO (PsychNET), Scopus (Elsevier), Web of Science (Social Sciences Index; WoS), ORCA (Online research at Cardiff University), Science Direct (Elsevier), Taylor and Francis Online, and PubMed. Grey literature was sourced using the Transport Research International Database (TRID) as well as conference proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and Driver Assessment. In parallel, an internet search of Google Scholar was undertaken. Two researchers reviewed papers suitable for inclusion. Eligible papers were those published in the English language, during the last decade; the latter to allow for a more contemporary appraisal of the literature. The search yielded thirty peer reviewed articles and ten reports relevant to the personality and well-being of SDP&C road users. The findings show that anxiety, stress and depression were predictive of unfavourable driving outcomes (e.g. risk-taking, aggression, poor driving behaviour.) Further, driving discourtesy by others was found to not only induce stress reactions in drivers, but also led to riskier driving practice, such as deliberately engaging in intimidating driving behaviour. Negative personality traits were related with negative driving behaviours, whilst higher levels of well-being and life satisfaction appear to safeguard drivers against deliberate driving violations. There was a dearth of literature focusing on UK drivers, as well as research examining the impact of driving itself on the well-being of the driver. Further longitudinal, multivariate research is required to examine all well-being/personality predictors, whilst controlling for established predictors (such as fatigue) such that the factors underpinning unsafe driving behaviour (in isolation and in combination) may be revealed. Traditional methods for PARM relies on designing and utilising Data fusion or machine learning techniques in processing ambient and wearable sensing data for classifying types of physical activity and removing their uncertainties. Yet they mostly focus on controlled environments with the aim of increasing types of identifiable activity subjects, improved recognition accuracy and measure robustness. The emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) enabling technology is transferring PARM studies to an open and dynamic uncontrolled ecosystem by connecting heterogeneous cost-effective wearable devices and mobile apps and various groups of users [35]. Little is currently known about whether traditional Data fusion techniques can tackle new challenges of IoT environments and how to effectively harness and improve these technologies. In an effort to understand potential use and opportunities of Data fusion techniques in IoT enabled PARM applications, this paper will give a systematic review, critically examining PARM studies from a perspective of a novel 3D dynamic IoT based physical activity collection and validation model. It summarized traditional state-of-the-art data fusion techniques from three plane domains in the 3D dynamic IoT model: devices, persons and timeline. The paper goes on to identify some new research trends and challenges of data fusion techniques in the IoT enabled PARM studies, and discusses some key enabling techniques for tackling them. Our field has come a long way in establishing cognitive-behavioral therapy as the empirically supported treatment of choice for a wide range of mental and behavioral health problems. Nevertheless, most individuals with mental disorders do not receive any care at all, and those who do often have difficulty accessing care that is consistently high in quality. Addressing these issues is complex and costly and thus progress has been slow. We are entering an exciting stage in which emerging technologies might offer novel solutions to the treatment gap. This paper discusses a number of technology-enabled solutions to our field's challenges, including Internet-based and smartphone-based cognitive-behavioral therapy. Nevertheless, we must remain attentive to potential pitfalls of these emerging technologies. The paper incorporates suggestions for how the field may approach these potential pitfalls and provides a vision for how we might develop powerful, scalable, precisely timed, personalized interventions to enhance global mental health. Different types of high-rise residential buildings have proliferated in different countries at least since the 1940s, for a range of reasons. This paper aims to provide an overview of the current state of evidence on how planning, urban design and architectural aspects of high-rise residential buildings may influence social well-being and mental health. A systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines was conducted. Searches for peer-reviewed papers were conducted in MEDLINE, Embase, PsycInfo, Scopus, SciELO, and Web of Science; 4100 papers were assessed. 23 empirical studies published between 1971 and 2016 were included. The review found that house type, floor level, as well as spaces intrinsic to high-rise residential buildings (e.g. shared stairwells) are associated with social well-being and mental health. However, conceptual gaps and methodological inconsistencies still characterise most of the research in this field. We expect that research about and policy attention to this subject may intensify due to its strategic relevance in the face of global challenges such as increasing urbanization and loneliness. • Compared to passive control, dance improves mental health and quality of life in individuals with Parkinson's disease. • Non-partnered dance is more effective in improving mental health than partnered dance. • Higher total dosage of dance intervention negatively correlates with the effects on mental health. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects millions of individuals worldwide. Dance has emerged as a comprehensive intervention for enhancing well-being in this population. This meta-analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness of dance on mental health and quality of life among individuals with PD. Three databases were searched in December 2022. Research papers comparing the effects of dance with a non-dance control on the quality of life or mental health of individuals with PD were included. Two authors independently screened the studies, extracted data, and assessed methodological quality of eligible studies. To address the interdependence of effect sizes within studies, the three-level meta-analysis approach was employed to analyze the data. Thirteen trials involving a total of 496 participants were included, with 11 being subjected to statistical analysis. The results indicated that dance had a positive impact on mental health (g = 0.43, 95 % CI = [0.11, 0.75]) and quality of life (g = 0.46, 95 % CI = [-0.04, 0.95]) when compared to passive control groups. Moderator analyses revealed that non-partnered dance and dance interventions with lower total dosages were particularly beneficial for mental health. Dance interventions are an effective lifestyle activity for enhancing mental health and quality of life in individuals with PD. Ramos et al. paper offers a narrative review of Spanish Organic Law 3/2021, which regulates euthanasia, focusing on its application to individuals with mental disorders. Ramos et al. examine the application of legal prerequisites from an ethical-legal perspective to ascertain the conditions under which psychiatric euthanasia might be considered legitimate and compliant with legal stipulations. Nevertheless, it is apparent that the core ethical inquiries linked to this matter have not been exhaustively investigated. The criteria laid out are, in our assessment, still open to further debate and broader deliberation. Our article emphasizes the need for a comprehensive ethical and legal debate in Spain regarding psychiatric euthanasia. Competency assessment is central to the legislation, but there are concerns about the validity of assessment tools and the subjective nature of interviews. Furthermore, defining irreversible suffering in mental health contexts poses challenges. The article advocates for a deeper understanding of the needs of individuals with mental disorders before considering euthanasia and emphasizes the importance of comprehensive care and psychosocial interventions in reducing the desire for euthanasia. People with impaired decision-making capacity enjoy the same rights to access technology as people with full capacity. Our paper looks at realising this right in the specific contexts of artificial intelligence (AI) and mental capacity legislation. Ireland's Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act, 2015 commenced in April 2023 and refers to 'assistive technology' within its 'communication' criterion for capacity. We explore the potential benefits and risks of AI in assisting communication under this legislation and seek to identify principles or lessons which might be applicable in other jurisdictions. We focus especially on Ireland's provisions for advance healthcare directives because previous research demonstrates that common barriers to advance care planning include (i) lack of knowledge and skills, (ii) fear of starting conversations about advance care planning, and (iii) lack of time. We hypothesise that these barriers might be overcome, at least in part, by using generative AI which is already freely available worldwide. Bodies such as the United Nations have produced guidance about ethical use of AI and these guide our analysis. One of the ethical risks in the current context is that AI would reach beyond communication and start to influence the content of decisions, especially among people with impaired decision-making capacity. For example, when we asked one AI model to 'Make me an advance healthcare directive', its initial response did not explicitly suggest content for the directive, but it did suggest topics that might be included, which could be seen as setting an agenda. One possibility for circumventing this and other shortcomings, such as concerns around accuracy of information, is to look to foundational models of AI. With their capabilities to be trained and fine-tuned to downstream tasks, purpose-designed AI models could be adapted to provide education about capacity legislation, facilitate patient and staff interaction, and allow interactive updates by healthcare professionals. These measures could optimise the benefits of AI and minimise risks. Similar efforts have been made to use AI more responsibly in healthcare by training large language models to answer healthcare questions more safely and accurately. The conceptual basis of psychopathology within cancer survivorship is critical, as the chosen conceptualisation informs assessment and explanatory models, as well as interventions and supportive care approaches. The validity of a chosen conceptualisation of psychopathology is therefore paramount for ensuring cancer survivors receive high-quality and efficacious care and support that can be iteratively improved via coordinated research efforts. In this paper, we discuss the traditional diagnostic approach to conceptualising psychopathology within cancer care, including the diagnostic system the 'Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders' (DSM) [1], and the significant issues it presents within cancer survivorship. We detail and discuss how an alternate conceptualisation of psychopathology may enhance both research and practice within psycho-oncology. Fierce competition in China's basic education system results in students spending too much time on homework. However, few studies have explored the mental health effects of homework time. Using data from the China Education Panel Survey (CEPS), this paper empirically examines the impact of homework time on adolescent mental health through the fixed-effects model and instrumental variables regression. Additionally, this study explores the moderating effects of teacher support and parent involvement. The results indicate that homework time has a negative effect on adolescent mental health, but only when the amount of time spent on homework exceeds about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Overall, there is a non-linear relationship between homework time and adolescent mental health. Teacher support, particularly emotional support, can mitigate the adverse mental health effects of excessive homework time, whereas parental involvement does not show the same positive effect. The analysis of heterogeneity reveals that adolescents from rural schools or medium family economic backgrounds experience a more pronounced negative impact from excessive homework time compared to those from urban schools, poorer or richer family backgrounds. Furthermore, students with outstanding academic performance are affected more significantly than their peers with poor academic performance. The empirical results echo the targets of the Chinese "double reduction policy" which requires strict control of homework time. Parental difficulties, including mental ill health, substance misuse, domestic violence and learning disability have been associated with children entering out-of-home care. There is also evidence that these issues may co-occur within families. Understanding how the co-occurrence of these difficulties is associated with care entry is complex because they may co-occur in the same or different household members and have different impacts on the likelihood of care entry when they occur in mothers, fathers or in single parent households. Administrative data from local authority children's services in Wales were linked with demographic data to identify households in which children lived prior to entering care. Linkage to birth data identified biological mothers. Linkage with primary care, emergency department, hospital admissions and substance misuse services data enabled indicators of substance misuse, mental health, assaults in the home, learning disability and neurodivergence in the adults in those households to be identified. A series of multilevel binary logistic regression models were used to explore the odds of a household having one or more children entering care if risk factors were present. These considered the effects of individual risks, and cumulative risk both in individual adults in the household, and across the whole household. The effects of the number of adults, having adults with no risks and the differential impacts of risks in biological mothers, other women or men were also explored. Additional models explored these factors in single adult households. Cumulative risks increased the likelihood of care entry, however this effect disappeared when individual risks were controlled for. The presence of an individual with no risks in the household acted as a protective factor. Overall, the impact of the risks on the odds of care entry was substantially greater if the risks were present in the biological mother than if they occurred in other adults (men or women) in the household. In single adult households risk factors had a much greater impact when they occurred in households headed by women as opposed to men. Substantial differences in the effects of risk factors in female and male adults are apparent and further research is needed to understand why this is occurring to ensure that parents are treated equally in terms of support and statutory intervention regardless of their sex. 1 1 Throughout this paper we refer to the "sex" of the parents /adults in households, as opposed to their "gender." Autistic adults are at increased risk of mental health difficulties; however Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) often struggle to offer appropriate support to this group. Within England, Government initiatives, such as the 'Transforming Care' programme which included 'Building the Right Support' (NHS England, 2015) have promoted the need for AMHS to consider how they can better provide autism-informed support to autistic adults. Here, we describe the first two years of work of the Transforming Care in Autism (TCA) Team; a specialist service that supports autistic adults, without a moderate or severe intellectual disability or presenting significant risk to others, experiencing a mental health crisis. The service model is described, and descriptive data is presented over the two years of the service operation. Results: Between February 2019 and February 2021, 110 referrals were received; 52 (47%) were accepted. Support offered to autistic adults included psychoeducation, psychological interventions, family-focused interventions, and consultation with professionals about specific individuals. Seventy autism training sessions were delivered to professionals working in medical health settings, AMHS, social care and residential services. Developing more autism-informed community and inpatient AMHS is vital for improving care. Further research about the experiences and needs of autistic adults using AMHS is needed, along with improved awareness of autism and provision of tailored intervention within these settings. Autistic people have mental health problems more often than people who are not autistic. When autistic people need help from mental health services, often these services do not know how to help autistic people. The Government says mental health services must do more to help autistic people. In this paper we write about a new team, called the Transforming Care in Autism team. In its first two years the team was asked to help 110 people and worked with 52 of them. Help included talking to autistic people about how autism affects them and offering therapy. We also worked with families and professionals supporting autistic adults and offered 70 training sessions. More work is needed to make sure mental health services work well with autistic people. In recent years, university students have reported increased symptoms of stress and anxiety, which can negatively impact their mental well-being and academic performance. However, many students do not seek or receive support for these challenges. With recent technological advances in intelligent agents and their expanding capabilities, there is a potential for intelligent agents to extend and complement mental health care interventions and enhance access to care. Recognizing that there are many further steps to developing user-centred evidence-based approaches for mental health challenges, as a first step to developing effective interventions using intelligent agents, it is important to identify design elements and functionalities that are perceived as engaging and useful by students. In this paper, we present the findings of an online survey with 1054 undergraduate students to explore students' perceptions of, and preferences for, using different types of intelligent agents (e.g., virtual agents, social robots, etc.) to support their mental well-being, specifically to cope with feelings of stress and anxiety in social situations typically encountered within a university context (e.g., engaging in a group discussion, delivering presentations, expressing opinions, etc.). Students were asked to complete a questionnaire to explore their experience of stress and anxiety in the university context, as well as their perceptions of, and preferences for using different intelligent agents as assistive tools to cope with such feelings. Mobile apps for mental health and wellness (MH apps) have the potential to support youth mental health, expanding access to the large proportion of youth with mental health concerns who do not access formal treatment. Survey data suggest that young people are highly interested in MH apps, with minoritized youth (eg, LGBTQ individuals) and youth with elevated depressive symptoms reporting especially high rates of downloading MH apps.1 In addition, systematic reviews and meta-analyses suggest that MH apps can be effective.2 Although many popular MH apps do not have direct empirical evidence supporting their efficacy,3 they often include elements of empirically supported treatments for children and adolescents.4 The MH app space moves at a fast pace, making it difficult to stay up-to-date. More than 10,000 MH apps exist, with hundreds released each year.5 Even interested clinicians may, understandably, not have time to sort through the large number of apps, scientific papers, and app directories. Furthermore, these resources are rarely designed to offer clear, actionable advice for clinicians. Clinicians could benefit from information and guidance to help patients safely navigate MH apps and to best use MH apps in treatment. Here, we provide 3 key points about youth MH apps ("takeaways"), each with an actionable implication for clinicians ("action items"). Since, obtaining a large-scale labelled dataset for mental health conditions is a big challenge; the self-supervised contrastive learning frameworks are more suitable for developing such systems. This paper presents a novel Quantum Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) based Contrastive Learning framework for continuous mental health monitoring by leveraging LSTM's strengths in time series data analytics aiding it with the benefits of quantum computation, contrastive learning, and transfer learning. In the pretext task of the contrastive learning framework, a quantum guided LSTM base-encoder is developed for effective representational learning. The learnt model is then fine-tuned by training it with a small labelled dataset to further enhance its prediction capability. Experiments were carried out on seven benchmark datasets related to mental health conditions. With the enhanced representational and prediction abilities, the proposed model has shown superior performance over traditional ones. On heart rate variability dataset collected from (Schmidt et al., 2018), it achieves the greatest F1-score of 0.99. We offer a framework for the design and use of Ambient Smart Environments (ASEs) for preventive mental health care support. Drawing from Complex Systems Theory (CST) and 'E' Cognitive Science (ECS), we claim that ASEs have the potential to act in a preventive capacity in support of good mental health, i.e. supporting dynamics that avoid so-called "struck states" (which are, according to CST, thought generally to underpin forms of psychopathology). Here, we frame our discussion with what has recently been termed the "mind-technology problem". We define and characterise ASE systems, present some examples, and briefly survey some existing theoretical work. After introducing the essential CST terminology, the paper goes on to apply CST to explain developmental adaptation to continuously changing (smart) environments. Understanding the ASE's navigation in terms of a dynamic geometry between attracting and repelling points (or local minima/local maxima), allows us to develop neurotechnology that can augment clinical interventions by predicting upcoming shifts for good symptomatic outcomes, i.e. when a preventive intervention (i.e. destabilisation) should take place. Online social networks can be used for mental healthcare monitoring using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques for detecting various mental health disorders and corresponding risk assessment. Recent research in this domain has primarily been focused on leveraging deep neural networks and various Transformer based Large Language Models, which have now become state-of-the-art for most natural language processing and computational linguistic tasks due to their unmatched prediction accuracy. Unlike conventional machine learning algorithms, these deep neural networks are black box architectures, where it is difficult to interpret and explain their predicted outcome. However, a black box classification outcome is insufficient for healthcare applications. Such systems will not be widely adopted and trusted by healthcare practitioners if they are not able to understand and explain the reasoning behind the predicted decisions made by an AI and ML based healthcare diagnostic system. The key objective of our research is to demonstrate the applications of model agnostic, post hoc surrogate XAI techniques for providing explainability to classification decisions of pretrained LLMs (Transformers) based mental healthcare diagnostic systems fine-tuned (or trained) to detect depressive and suicidal behavior using UGC from online social networks. For this, we have used the two most recent and popular techniques, SHAP and LIME. We have conducted extensive and in-depth experiments with four datasets and six pretrained LLMs, three of which have already been domain-adapted using mental health related datasets. We have also performed Few Shot Learning experiments with these three pretrained mental health domain-adapted LLMs. The results of qualitative and descriptive data analysis in this paper demonstrate that in order to build a comprehensive understanding of a person's psychological state, emotion, and behavior and to discover the causes, symptoms, and triggers of mental health issues, it is essential to utilize e X pl AI nable (XAI) techniques with Transformer based LLMs (supervised). Alternatively, Transformer based unsupervised topic modeling technique BERTopic may be used for mental health risk monitoring and cause or symptom extraction when supervised training of LLMs is not feasible due to dataset annotation or availability challenges. Through a systematic review and meta-analysis of research on individual health and well-being outcomes this paper examines the consequences of witnessing, and thereby being a bystander to, workplace bullying. The review was limited to peer-reviewed primary observational studies with cross-sectional or prospective research design which included findings on outcomes among witnesses to bullying. The review identified 24 relevant studies from 13 countries. Eighty-eight percent of the studies were published from 2010 and onwards. Most studies used cross-sectional single source data from non-probability samples, mainly comprising female respondents from Western countries. Although cross-sectional findings indicated significant associations between witnessing bullying and outcomes such as mental health, job dissatisfaction, and turnover intent, the review show that we need to consider reverse causation, the witness's own exposure to bullying, their proximity and identification with the target, as well as their helping behavior, to understand the true magnitude of the association. Witnessing and being a bystander to bullying is a complex phenomenon and the magnitude of the outcomes relies on a range of third variables and indirect relationships. • Socio- cultural aspects should be considered for adequate prevention of femicide. • The cause of femicides is not to be attributed to mental disorder factors but to socio-culturally oriented aspects. • A shared definition of femicide will allow a further systematically homogeneous investigation of this phenomenon. • Further quantitative research is warranted to disentangle the root causes of femicide. • It is important create international policy strategies to contrast violence in relationships. A shared definition of femicide would help to distinguish it from the murder of a woman and understand its root causes favoring prevention. We conducted a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to assess how (and if) femicide cases were related to mental disorders. Articles papers that explicitly define or discuss femicides or articles that, albeit not expressly mention femicides, thoroughly compare generic homicides and homicides with female victims. We analyse 3546 articles were retrieved from the databases, and 75 studies fulfilled the eligibility criteria and were included in the SLR. Many forms of femicide emerge worldwide as people's values, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours evolve (intimate partner femicide, femicide-suicide, religious femicide, honour, revolt femicide) and state of vulnerability. A tiny percentage of femicides occur at the hands of subjects with diagnosed mental disorders, and controversies exist regarding the possible link between femicide and the use of drugs and/or alcohol and other factors. The complex problem of violence against women must be addressed with a transdisciplinary approach and targeted interventions for both the victims and the perpetrators. The present SLR shows that it is not possible to link femicides to mental disorders and that socio and cultural factors appear to be more relevant. Further quantitative research is warranted to disentangle the root causes of this heinous phenomenon plaguing our times. Our studies show that using the proposed definition of feminicide would help to delimit and adequately recognise violence in courtrooms, promote the culture of equality, and identify adequate policy strategies for prevention. In this multi-study paper, we adopted a mixed methods approach to examine the motivational profiles of sub-elite student footballers participating in UK university sport, in relation to their wellbeing, burnout, and drop-out intentions. In Study 1 we used a cross-sectional survey design to collect quantitative measures of motivational regulations, wellbeing, burnout, and drop-out intentions in 260 (n = 129 female) and (n = 131 male) sub-elite university footballers from UK universities (M age = 20.7 y, SD = 1.5 y). Latent profile analysis revealed five distinct motivational regulation profiles that we deemed ranged from less to more motivationally adaptive in the following order: High-controlled, Amotivated (n = 27), Very-low Motivation (n = 32), Average Motivation (n = 104), High-autonomous, High-controlled (n = 38), and High-autonomous, Low-controlled (n = 59). Wald chi-square tests revealed between-profile differences in wellbeing (χ2 = 115, p <.001), burnout (reduced accomplishment: χ2 = 74, p <.001, exhaustion: χ2 = 34, p <.001, devaluation: χ2 = 121, p <.001), and drop-out intentions (university football: χ2 = 40, p <.001, football in general: χ2 = 91, p <.001). Pairwise comparisons suggested more adaptive motivational profiles had higher wellbeing, and lower burnout and drop-out intentions, than less adaptive profiles. Subsequently, in Study 2 we qualitatively explored the experiences of footballers from the different motivational profiles. We purposefully sampled 2–4 participants from each of the five motivational profiles to take part in focus groups, resulting in a total of 15 participants (M age = 21.6 y, SD = 1.41 y; n = 8 female, n = 7 male). Results revealed commonalities across the motivational profiles, including that while motivation was complex, individualized, dynamic and interactive in nature; a central, underlying motivator for all players was their passion for football. However, results also suggested that compared to those from less motivationally adaptive profiles, those from more adaptive profiles tended to perceive the environment more positively and tended to feel more valued by those around them. Researchers and policymakers have identified adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) like abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction as a contributing factor to poor mental health outcomes for children. Positive childhood experiences (PCEs) like open family communication styles, having the ability to live and play in a safe, stable, and protective environment, having constructive opportunities for social engagement, and receiving mentorship from adults have been found to improve the mental health of children. This paper explores the role of ACEs and PCEs on the mental health outcomes of children. A sample of 22,628 children ages 6–17 from the National Survey of Children's Health (2017–2020) was used to explore the relationship between PCEs and ACEs and the mental health of children. Logistic regression analysis is used to model the effect of PCEs and ACEs on the odds of child mental health diagnoses. Findings indicate that with each additional ACE, there was a significant increase in the odds of reporting a MH condition (OR = 1.25, 95 % CI 1.09–1.43). Conversely, with each additional PCE, there is a significant decrease in the odds or reporting a MH condition (OR = 0.76, 95 % CI 0.68–0.84). There was also evidence that PCEs moderate the relationship between ACEs and reports of mental health conditions. When counts of ACEs are low, PCEs provide a protective effect on reports of mental health. But when the count of ACEs are high, children with higher numbers of PCEs have similar reports of mental health conditions. This study provides information about the moderating effect of PCEs on the relationship between ACEs and child mental health diagnosis with the goal of informing policies and interventions focused on ameliorating the growing crisis of children's negative mental health and well-being. Adverse childhood events (ACEs) like abuse, neglect and household dysfunction are known to negatively impact the mental health and well-being of children. Positive childhood experiences (PCEs), on the other hand, can positively influence the mental health and well-being of children. This study examines the association between adverse and positive childhood experiences to understand how they impact the mental health outcomes of children ages 6–17. Pollution is harmful to human physical health and wellbeing. What is less well established is the relationship between adolescent mental health – a growing public health concern – and pollution. In response, we systematically reviewed studies documenting associations between pollution and mental health in adolescents. We searched Africa Wide, Medline, PsycArticles, PsycInfo, PubMed, CINAHL, ERIC, SciELO, Scopus, and Web of Science Core Collection for studies published up to 10 April 2020 that investigated exposure to any pollutant and symptoms of anxiety; depression; disruptive, impulse-control, and conduct disorders; neurodevelopmental disorders; psychosis; or substance abuse in 10–24-year-olds (i.e., adolescents as per expanded and more inclusive definition of adolescence). This identified 2291 records and we assessed 128 papers for inclusion. We used a narrative synthesis to coalesce the studies' findings. This review is registered on PROSPERO, CRD42020176664. Seventeen studies from Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America were included. Air and water pollution exposure was associated with elevated symptoms of depression, generalised anxiety, psychosis, and/or disruptive, impulse control and conduct disorder. Exposure to lead and solvents was associated with neurodevelopmental impairments. Most studies neglected factors that could have supported the mental health resilience of adolescents exposed to pollution. Notwithstanding the limited quality of most reviewed studies, results suggest that pollution exposure is a risk to adolescent mental health. High-quality research is urgently required, including the factors and processes that protect the mental health of pollution-exposed adolescents. The first Transplant Games took place in 1978 in Portsmouth, England. Since then, numerous Olympic-style sporting 'Games' have been established, each aiming to increase public awareness of organ donation, demonstrate the benefits of transplantation, and encourage patient fitness. Despite this, there is limited research exploring the psycho-social and health impacts of the Games. Drawing on qualitative research conducted at the 2022 British Transplant Games and the 2022 European Transplant and Dialysis Games, this paper explores the Games through a therapeutic landscapes framework, a concept that examines the ways in which environments contribute to health and wellbeing. Building upon work that acknowledges the relational and contingent nature of health-in-place, I argue that the Games are a therapeutic landscape of social relations for transplant recipients in three ways: providing a landscape of belonging , a landscape of hope , and a landscape of motivation. Through this therapeutic landscapes perspective, the Transplant Games are presented as a peer-to-peer clinic – a care space where individuals are more actively involved in their health on a reciprocal level than in the traditional hospital clinic. In turn, this paper emphasises the crucial role of affective peer support in producing health-promoting environments. Mental health is a basic need for a sustainable and developing society. The prevalence and financial burden of mental illness have increased globally, and especially in response to community and worldwide pandemic events. Children suffering from such mental disorders find it difficult to cope with educational, occupational, personal, and societal developments, and treatments are not accessible to all. Advancements in technology have resulted in much research examining the use of artificial intelligence to detect or identify characteristics of mental illness. Therefore, this paper presents a systematic review of nine developmental and mental disorders (Autism spectrum disorder, Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Schizophrenia, Anxiety, Depression, Dyslexia, Post-traumatic stress disorder, Tourette syndrome, and Obsessive–compulsive disorder) prominent in children and adolescents. Our paper focuses on the automated detection of these developmental and mental disorders using physiological signals. This paper also presents a detailed discussion on signal analysis, feature engineering, and decision-making with their advantages, future directions and challenges on the papers published on mental disorders of children. We have presented the details of the dataset description, validation techniques, features extracted and decision-making models. The challenges and future directions present open research questions on signal or availability, uncertainty, explainability, and hardware implementation resources for signal analysis and machine or deep learning models. This paper estimates the wellbeing effects of the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires, the deadliest wildfire event in Australia's known history. Using subjective wellbeing data from a nationally representative longitudinal study and adopting an individual fixed-effects approach, our results identify a significant reduction in life satisfaction for individuals residing in close proximity of the wildfires. Last year, we wrote to you of our dedication and vision for this journal "to be antiracist at every level," outlining the following 6 initiatives "to reshape the Journal to pursue this vision:" (1) Issuing a Call for Papers "on racism and its impacts on child development and children's mental health;" (2) updating our Guide for Authors "to emphasize that we will evaluate articles submitted to the Journal on whether their study designs and discussions consider and address human diversity in the context of their research questions and hypotheses; (3) assembling a special collection of "Journal articles on bias, bigotry, racism, and mental health disparities;" (4) accelerating "our efforts to make our editorial board inclusive and representative of our community of scientists and practitioners as well as the communities we all serve;" (5) engaging in "continuing education and dialogue as an Editorial Board that will include antiracism training;" and (6) critically examining "our editorial and peer review process to ensure it is antiracist.1 In this Editors' Note, we write to update you on our progress. Diagnostically defined insomnia is prevalent, persistent, and associated with a range of negative outcomes in childhood and adolescence. To inform prevention and treatment, we need to identify relevant predictors that can be addressed in such intervention efforts. Therefore, a systematic search for longitudinal studies involving child and adolescent samples (ages 4 to 19) examining predictors of diagnostically defined insomnia adjusted for previous insomnia was conducted. The search identified 6419 studies, resulting in six included papers involving five samples (n = 9949) conducted in five different countries (the US, New Zealand, Norway, China, and Japan). Few longitudinal studies investigated the predictors of diagnostically defined insomnia in children and adolescents, and insomnia is rarely defined according to diagnostic manuals. The results suggested that poor mental health (most notably depression) and female sex may be involved in the etiology of diagnostically defined insomnia. Stress might be the most modifiable factor identified. However, the diversity of the predictors studied in previous reports combined with the lack of replication prevent any firm conclusions from being drawn. There is great interest in understanding who in the population is resilient in the face of major life events, and who is not. In this paper we construct a revealed measure of adulthood psychological resilience by modelling individuals' responses to ten adverse life events using a dynamic finite mixture regression model applied to 17 years of panel data. Our methodology accounts for non-random selection into events, and differences between individuals in anticipation, immediate response, and speed of adaptation. We find considerable heterogeneity in individuals' responses to events such as major financial shocks, redundancy and bereavement. We also find that our measure of resilience is correlated with clinical measures of mental health, and that it significantly predicts the psychological response to out-of-sample events. The strongest predictor of our measure of resilience is internal locus of control, which is an individual's belief that life outcomes are under their control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the past decade, psychiatric research has been on an important hunt for biomarkers of psychiatric disease. In psychiatry, the term "biomarker" is a broad umbrella term used to identify any biological variable that can be objectively measured and applied to a diagnosis; this includes genetic and epigenetic assessments, hormone levels, measures of neuro-anatomy and many other scientific modalities. However, despite hundreds of studies on the topic being published yearly and other medical specialties having success in discovering biomarkers, clinical psychiatric practice has not had the same success. This paper aims to consolidate the many opinions on the search for psychiatric biomarkers to suggest key methodological and clinical challenges that psychiatric biomarker research faces. Psychiatry as a specialty has many fundamental differences compared to other medical specialties in methods of diagnosing, underlying etiology and disease pathologies that may be limiting the success of biomarker research in itself and puts strict requirements on the research being conducted. The academic and clinical environment in which the research is being conducted also heavily influences the translation of the findings. Finally, once biomarkers are identified, more often than not they are inapplicable to clinical settings, unable to integrate into clinical practice and fail to outperform current diagnostic practices and guidelines. We also make six recommendations for more promising future research in psychiatric biomarkers. • For biomarker research to be successful, multiple techniques must be combined. • There are intricacies unique to psychiatry that make successful biomarker identification difficult. • Improved research methodologies that are easily combined are needed. • Multidisciplinary teams should be involved at all stages of biomarker research. This paper focuses on the stancetaking formats used to express personal thoughts, namely Finnish mä aattelen/aattelin 'I think/thought', mä mietin 'I think/wonder', and mun mielestä/musta 'I think/in my opinion'. We study how these first-person formats are used in mental health rehabilitation group meetings, which aim to promote joint decision-making. In particular, we analyze whether the institutional asymmetry between support workers and clients is reflected in the use of these thought expressions. Our data comprise 23 video-recorded rehabilitation meetings, and the adopted methods are conversation analysis and interactional linguistics. Most of the stancetaking formats in our data are produced by support workers (106/129). The results of a sequential analysis conducted in this study demonstrate that support workers' thought expressions are embedded in their institutional actions, which are beyond the clients' authority. Moreover, our data suggest that support workers' and rehabilitants' thought expressions generate different participation dynamics. Although previous research has considered I think -formats typically as calls for other views, in institutional settings such as ours, these formats can also be interpreted as highlighting an institutional agent's controlling position. Introduction: This paper describes the co-creation and delivery of an integrated training programme in communication and depression assessment & management for Japanese GPs.Methods: Experts in communication and depression from EACH and WONCA developed a framework and filled it with content. Through iterative discussions with the Japanese participants and experts during delivery, the training was further adjusted to match local needs. It included didactic and experiential training methods with an emphasis on practicing and feedback. A "train-the-trainer" component helped participants develop their own trainer skills to enhance dissemination of the training in Japan.Results: Six Japanese GPs participated in two one week training-modules in May and November 2018. To aid implementation participants received online supervision on depression management and on teaching between the two modules and after the second module. Evaluation of the content of the training, the teaching methods and the participatory approach was positive. More than two years after the training, many elements of the training continue to be used in daily practice with the GPs teaching communication as well as depression management skills.Conclusion: The method of co-creation is promising. • A sequential fusion approach is proposed for facial depression recognition. • The correlation and complementarity between facial appearance and dynamics are well exploited. • Evaluations on the benchmark show the improvement over several competitive solutions. In mental health assessment, it is validated that nonverbal cues like facial expressions can be indicative of depressive disorders. Recently, the multimodal fusion of facial appearance and dynamics based on convolutional neural networks has demonstrated encouraging performance in depression analysis. However, correlation and complementarity between different visual modalities have not been well studied in prior methods. In this paper, we propose a sequential fusion method for facial depression recognition. For mining the correlated and complementary depression patterns in multimodal learning, a chained-fusion mechanism is introduced to jointly learn facial appearance and dynamics in a unified framework. We show that such sequential fusion can provide a probabilistic perspective of the model correlation and complementarity between two different data modalities for improved depression recognition. Wayfinding uses a range of skills including recalling information from memory, interpreting information from the environment, and taking decisions based on this information. Mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression can adversely affect these skills. A significant proportion of the population has one or more mental health conditions. This paper discusses the issues that these people face when wayfinding. It is based on a descriptive study which uses the results from an on-line survey of domestic travel by people with mental health conditions. The anxieties associated with wayfinding such as feeling disorientated and becoming lost are examined. The roles that mobile phone apps and information play in wayfinding are discussed. Many of the respondents indicated that initiatives such as clearer information about bus and train services, the provision of information on board buses and trains and travel training would encourage them to travel more. The aim of this paper is to develop understandings of how meaning-making processes apply to moral injury in military populations. Moral injury is an emerging clinical construct recognized as a source of mental health morbidity. Meaning-making processes, especially following highly stressful events, have far-reaching applicability to ensuring favorable mental health outcomes. This paper examines meaning-making processes in the context of moral injury: meaning and morality in times of war, morally injurious experiences, moral emotions and cognitions, the importance of meaning-making in general mental health, and how meaning-making plays into the expressions and/or symptoms of MI. We apply these understandings in a case vignette of a Veteran affected by moral injury. We end by offering suggestions on how meaning-making can be applied in the development of clinical support strategies in cases of moral injury. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores how distinctions between 'intended' and 'side' effects are troubled in personal narratives of taking psychotropic medications. Grounded in interviews with 29 participants diagnosed with mental illness in Victoria, Australia between February and December 2014, we consider how people interpret pharmaceutical compounds beyond their desired or intended effects, and how such effects shape and transform subjectivity and their relationship with their bodies. This paper contributes to recent discussions of mental illness and medication effects, informed by feminist science studies. It emphasises the co-constitution of social, affective and material relations in the context of 'taking' psychotropic medication. This paper discusses three key themes as important to the phenomenology of the nexus of illness and psychotropic medication: movement, ambivalence, and sociality.
