Recently, network error correction coding (NEC) has been studied extensively. Several bounds in classical coding theory have been extended to NEC, especially the Singleton bound. In this paper, following the research line using the extended global encoding kernels proposed by Zhang in 2008, the refined Singleton bound of NEC can be proved more explicitly. Moreover, we give a constructive proof of the attainability of this bound and indicate that the required field size for the existence of network maximum distance separable (MDS) codes can become smaller further. By this proof, an algorithm is proposed to construct general linear network error correction codes including the linear network error correction MDS codes. Finally, we study the error correction capability of random linear NEC. Motivated partly by the performance analysis of random linear network coding, we evaluate the different failure probabilities defined in this paper in order to analyze the performance of random linear NEC. Several upper bounds on these probabilities are obtained and they show that these probabilities will approach to zero as the size of the base field goes to infinity. Deadline guaranteed packet scheduling for switches is a fundamental issue for providing guaranteed QoS in digital networks. It is a historically difficult NP-hard problem if three or more deadlines are involved. All existing algorithms have too low throughput to be used in practice. A key reason is they use packet deadlines as default priorities to decide which packets to drop whenever conflicts occur. Although such a priority structure can ease the scheduling by focusing on one deadline at a time, it hurts the throughput greatly. Since deadlines do not necessarily represent the actual importance of packets, we can greatly improve the throughput if deadline induced priority is not enforced. This paper first presents an algorithm that guarantees the maximum throughput for the case where only two different deadlines are allowed. Then, an algorithm called iterative scheduling with no priority (ISNOP) is proposed for the general case where k > 2 different deadlines may occur. Not only does this algorithm have dramatically better average performance than all existing algorithms, but also guarantees approximation ratio of 2. A Bloom filter is a simple but powerful data structure that can check membership to a static set. As Bloom filters become more popular for network applications, a membership query for a dynamic set is also required. Some network applications require high-speed processing of packets. For this purpose, Bloom filters should reside in a fast and small memory, SRAM. In this case, due to the limited memory size, stale data in the Bloom filter should be deleted to make space for new data. Namely the Bloom filter needs aging like LRU caching. In this paper, we propose a new aging scheme for Bloom filters. The proposed scheme utilizes the memory space more efficiently than double buffering, the current state of the art. We prove theoretically that the proposed scheme outperforms double buffering. We also perform experiments on real Internet traces to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. Privacy is becoming a major issue in ad hoc networks. In this paper, using pseudonimity for achieving communication anonymity in networks that apply geographic-routing algorithms is explored. An Anonymous Receiver-Contention POsitioning (ARCPO) routing algorithm is proposed. Node identities (IDs) are kept anonymous. Pseudonyms, i.e., the positions of destinations, are used for data-packet delivery. The anonymity for a destination relies on the difficulty of matching its position to its ID by any observer. Position servers that provide node position information act as trusted third parties and handle identity management. Node mobility makes the use of the pseudonym momentary, and therefore can further improve privacy. The anonymity for the source and intermediate nodes in the path is also achieved because they are not required to reveal any identity information. A receiver-contention mechanism is proposed so that a next hop can be generated without local position information exchange, which otherwise may lead to severe privacy degradation. Analysis and simulation show that while ARCPO guarantees anonymous communication in ad hoc networks, its routing performance degrades moderately compared with other position routing algorithms.
