The Manta Ray Foraging Optimization Algorithm (MRFO) is a metaheuristic algorithm for solving real-world problems. However, MRFO suffers from slow convergence precision and is easily trapped in a local optimal. Hence, to overcome these deficiencies, this paper proposes an Improved MRFO algorithm (IMRFO) that employs Tent chaotic mapping, the bidirectional search strategy, and the Levy flight strategy. Among these strategies, Tent chaotic mapping distributes the manta ray more uniformly and improves the quality of the initial solution, while the bidirectional search strategy expands the search area. The Levy flight strategy strengthens the algorithm's ability to escape from local optimal. To verify IMRFO's performance, the algorithm is compared with 10 other algorithms on 23 benchmark functions, the CEC2017 and CEC2022 benchmark suites, and five engineering problems, with statistical analysis illustrating the superiority and significance of the difference between IMRFO and other algorithms. Metaheuristic algorithms, widely applied across various domains due to their simplicity and strong optimization capabilities, play a crucial role in problem-solving. While the Aquila Optimizer is recognized for its effectiveness, it often exhibits slow convergence rates and susceptibility to local optima in certain scenarios. To address these concerns, this paper introduces an enhanced version, termed Tent-enhanced Aquila Optimizer (TEAO). TEAO incorporates the Tent chaotic map to initialize the Aquila population, promoting a more uniform distribution within the solution space. To balance exploration and exploitation, novel formulas are proposed, accelerating convergence while ensuring precision. The effectiveness of the TEAO algorithm is validated through a comprehensive comparison with 14 state-of-the-art algorithms using 23 classical benchmark test functions. Additionally, to assess the practical feasibility of the approach, TEAO is applied to six constrained engineering problems and benchmarked against the performance of the same 14 algorithms. All experimental results consistently demonstrate that TEAO outperforms other advanced algorithms in terms of solution quality and stability, establishing it as a more competitive choice for optimization tasks. This paper presents an effective approach for solving economic load dispatch problems contemplating the scheduling a set of thermal generating units to produce a specific power at low consumption costs. These problems can be thought of as nonlinear, non-convex, and highly constrained optimization problems with a large number of local minima. To cope with the above issues in solving such problems, a new meta-heuristic named capuchin search algorithm was adopted. To boost the search performance of this algorithm as well as to mitigate its early convergence and regression to the local optimum, it was hybridized with another algorithm and improved using several positive amendments. First, a memory element was added to this algorithm to ameliorate its position and velocity update mechanisms in order to exploit the most encouraging candidate solutions. Second, two adaptive parametric functions were used to manage the exploration and exploitation features of this algorithm and balance them appropriately. Finally, the hybridization was made using the gradient-based optimizer to strengthen the intensification ability of this algorithm and balance its searching ability to fulfill sensible search performance. The proficiency of the proposed algorithm was divulged by assessing it on computationally difficult economic load dispatch problems under 6 different tests with a generator of 3, 13, 40, 80, and 140 units, each with different constraints and load conditions. The proposed algorithm provided the best performance among many other competitors. Cooperation search algorithm (CSA) is a new metaheuristic algorithm inspired from the team cooperation behaviors in modern enterprises and is characterized by fast convergence. However, for complex multimodal problems, it may get trapped into local optima and suffer from premature convergence for the shortcoming of population updating guided only by leading individuals. In this paper, the issue of low convergence efficiency and convergence accuracy of the CSA algorithm on complex multimodal problems is dramatically alleviated by integrating the mutation and crossover operators in DE algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate the better performance of CCSA on convergence speed and accuracy as compared to other existing optimizers. Furthermore, aiming at the problem that there is no universal approach for the multi-degree reduction in Ball Bézier surfaces under different interpolation constrains, we propose a new method to solve this problem by introducing metaheuristic methods, where the change of interpolation constrains is treated as the change of decision variables. The modeling examples show that the proposed method is effective and easy to implement under different interpolation constrains, which can achieve the multi-degree reduction in Ball Bézier surfaces at one time and can simplify the degree reduction procedure significantly. Harris hawks optimization (HHO) is a new meta-heuristic algorithm that builds a model by imitating the predation process of Harris hawks. In order to solve the problems of poor convergence speed caused by uniform choice position update formula in the exploration stage of basic HHO and falling into local optimization caused by insufficient population richness in the later stage of the algorithm, a Harris hawks optimization based on global cross-variation and tent mapping (CRTHHO) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the tent mapping is introduced in the exploration stage to optimize random parameter q to speed up the convergence in the early stage. Secondly, the crossover mutation operator is introduced to cross and mutate the global optimal position in each iteration process. The greedy strategy is used to select, which prevents the algorithm from falling into local optimal because of skipping the optimal solution and improves the convergence accuracy of the algorithm. In order to investigate the performance of CRTHHO, experiments are carried out on ten benchmark functions and the CEC2017 test set. In this paper, a new stochastic optimization algorithm is introduced, called Driving Training-Based Optimization (DTBO), which mimics the human activity of driving training. The fundamental inspiration behind the DTBO design is the learning process to drive in the driving school and the training of the driving instructor. DTBO is mathematically modeled in three phases: (1) training by the driving instructor, (2) patterning of students from instructor skills, and (3) practice. The performance of DTBO in optimization is evaluated on a set of 53 standard objective functions of unimodal, high-dimensional multimodal, fixed-dimensional multimodal, and IEEE CEC2017 test functions types. The optimization results show that DTBO has been able to provide appropriate solutions to optimization problems by maintaining a proper balance between exploration and exploitation. The performance quality of DTBO is compared with the results of 11 well-known algorithms. This paper addresses a new multi-level serial closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) model with an integrated formulation of batch deliveries, quality-dependent return rate, random defective rate, rework process, and learning effects. The vendor managed inventory contract has motivated companies to cope with the bullwhip effect and its associated shortages. However, getting precise information on manufacturing/remanufacturing time is a challenge owing to human learning. Accordingly, this paper tries to incorporate the learning effect on the inventory control problem. This is a bridge to fill the gaps in the literature by considering how the learning process affects the production time and system costs in a CLSC problem. Moreover, the mean-standard deviation utility function is used in order to take the random defective rate into account, to minimize mean system costs with respect to the standard deviation. Due to the complexity of the proposed mixed-integer nonlinear programming model, three metaheuristic algorithms named, genetic algorithm, invasive weed optimization algorithm, and moth flame optimization algorithm are used to solve the problem, and Fibonacci algorithm will examine the validity of the applied methods. Two sets of numerical examples in small, medium, and large sizes are presented to illustrate the performance of the algorithms in terms of objective function values and required CPU-time. Afterward, a statistical analysis is utilized in order to evaluate the proposed algorithms. The rapid growing number of web services has posed new challenges for service composition computing. How to combine services that meet the needs of users in the least amount of time from a huge number of candidate services is a hot topic of research today. As a meta-heuristic algorithm for solving optimization problems, salp swarm algorithm (SSA) has been widely applied to case scenarios in different fields due to its simple structure and high performance. However, QoS-aware service composition is a discrete problem and existing methods are not suitable for it. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an improved SSA integrating chaotic mapping method for QoS service composition selection, named CSSA. Through the randomness and ergodicity of chaos, reducing the possibility of falling into local optimum and strengthening the exploitation capability of the algorithm. In addition, a fuzzy continuous neighborhood search method is used to enhance the local search capability of the algorithm which makes the discrete space of service composition in a way similar to continuous space. Finally, two well-known datasets are used to verify the effectiveness of CSSA compared to three advanced algorithms and original SSA. The weapon target assignment (WTA) problem is an important task to tactical arrangements in military commitment operations. It describes the optimal method to allocate defense in opposition to threats in fighting situations. It is an NP-complete issue in which no accurate outcome for all conceivable situations is known. The time performance of created algorithms is a major challenge in modeling the WTA problem, which has only been lately considered in related papers. This article improves the recently developed algorithm called improved Tunicate Swarm Algorithm (iTSA) which is inspired by the natural behavior of tunicates to solve the WTA problem. The suggested method is compared with well-known metaheuristic approaches. The experimental findings show that the method presented works better than previous competing metaheuristic approaches. The metaheuristic optimization algorithms are relatively new optimization algorithms introduced to solve optimization problems in recent years. For example, the firefly algorithm (FA) is one of the metaheuristic algorithms inspired by the fireflies' flashing behavior. However, its weakness in terms of exploration and early convergence has been pointed out. In this paper, two approaches were proposed to improve the FA. In the first proposed approach, a new improved opposition-based learning FA (IOFA) method was presented to accelerate the convergence and improve the FA's exploration capability. In the second proposed approach, a symbiotic organisms search (SOS) algorithm improved the exploration and exploitation of the first approach; two new parameters set these two goals, and the second approach was named IOFASOS. The purpose of the second method is that in the process of the SOS algorithm, the whole population is effective in the IOFA method to find solutions in the early stages of implementation, and with each iteration, fewer solutions are affected in the population. The experiments on 24 standard benchmark functions were conducted, and the first proposed approach showed a better performance in the small and medium dimensions and exhibited a relatively moderate performance in the higher dimensions. In contrast, the second proposed approach was better in increasing dimensions. In general, the empirical results showed that the two new approaches outperform other algorithms in most mathematical benchmarking functions. Thus, The IOFASOS model has more efficient solutions. The introduction of cloud computing has brought about significant developments in information technology. Users can benefit from the multitude of cloud technology services only by connecting to the internet. In cloud computing, load balancing is the fundamental issue that has challenged experts in this research area. Load balancing helps increase user satisfaction and enhance systems' productivity through efficient and fair work assignments between computing resources. Besides, maintaining a load balancing among resources would be difficult because the resources are usually distributed in a heterogeneous way. Many load-balancing methods try to solve this problem by the metaheuristics algorithm, and each of them attempted to enhance the operation and efficiency of systems. In this paper, Grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm has been used based on the resource reliability capability to maintain proper load balancing. In this method, first, the GWO algorithm tries to find the unemployed or busy nodes and, after discovering this node, try to calculate each node's threshold and fitness function. Cloud providers deliver heterogeneous virtual machines to run complicated jobs submitted by users. The task scheduling issue is formulated to a discrete optimization problem which is well-known NP-Hard. This paper presents a hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm based on genetic and thermodynamic simulated annealing algorithms to solve this problem. In the proposed algorithm, the genetic and simulated annealing algorithms have respective global and local search inclinations covering each other's shortcomings. A novel theorem is presented and applied to produce a semi-conducted initial population. In a used genetic algorithm with a global trend, the crossover operator is performed to explore search space. The thermodynamic simulated annealing algorithm is utilized to improve the efficiency, which considers entropy and energy difference concepts in the cooling schedule process. After obtaining a suitable solution, one of the three novel neighbor operators is randomly called to enhance the given solution potentially. In this way, the efficient balance between exploration and exploitation in the search space is achieved. Simulation results prove that the proposed hybrid algorithm has 10.17%, 9.31%, 7.76%, and 8.21% dominance in terms of makespan, schedule length ratio, speedup, and efficiency against other comparative algorithms. The different communications of users in social networks play a key role in effect to each other. The effect is important when they can achieve their goals through different communications. Studying the effect of specific users on other users has been modeled on the influence maximization problem on social networks. To solve this problem, different algorithms have been proposed that each of which has attempted to improve the influence spread and running time than other algorithms. Due to the lack of a review of the meta-heuristic algorithms for the influence maximization problem so far, in this paper, we first perform a comprehensive categorize of the presented algorithms for this problem. Then according to the efficient results and significant progress of the meta-heuristic algorithms over the last few years, we describe the comparison, advantages, and disadvantages of these algorithms. In this paper, an evolutionary optimization procedure is presented to generate band-pass metasurface-based filters in terahertz regime. As a measure of novelty, pass-band, transition, and out-band characteristics are investigated separately, all of which result in different metasurfaces for filtering applications. The presented approach is defined based on random hill climbing algorithm, regarding the established link between Matlab and HFSS software. A metasurface-based filter with specific properties is considered as the main problem to be solved by the optimization method. Moreover, the fuzzy theory, mean square method, and weighting coefficient procedure are considered to define an efficient fitness function evaluation approach. Also, a step-by-step procedure is used to generate desired structures with a great note of efficiency. The final generated structure has magnificent characteristics including sharp transitions together with transmittance around 0.68 and less than 0.04 at pass-band and out-band regions, respectively. The existing engineering structural system is featured by complicated limit state functions of high nonlinearity, resulting in the conventional reliability analysis approach that is unable to evaluate these problems accurately or even unavailable. Various analytical methods have been presented by researchers over the past decades. However, these methods have difficulties in striking a balance between accuracy and computational efficiency. This paper proposes a relatively efficient and accurate procedure to estimate the failure probability of the parallel system based on the FORM and a new metaheuristic algorithm, chaotic enhanced colliding bodies optimization algorithm (CECBO). The CECBO has shown robustness, high accuracy, and implementation simplicity for solving optimization problems from previous work. Thus, the CECBO is employed to search the point of maximum likelihood (PML), a point that yields the highest value of the probability density function in the failure domain, through solving an optimization model and then approximates the failure domain of the parallel system to estimate the failure probability accurately. The results of the test examples indicate that the proposed procedure is promising for the estimation of the failure probability of a parallel system in terms of accuracy and efficiency. The cell formation problem determines decomposition of the manufacturing cells of a production system. Machines are assigned to the cells to process one or more part families so that each cell is operated independently and the inter-cellular movements are minimized. This paper proposes a new algorithm for grouping problems (bin packing, graph coloring, scheduling, etc.) which is a grouping version of an almost new algorithm (league championship algorithm (LCA)), and we used it to solve benchmarked instances of cell formation problem posing as a grouping problem. To evaluate the effectiveness of our approach, we borrow a set of 35 most widely used benchmark problem instances from literature and compare the performance of grouping LCA (GLCA) and several well-known algorithms published. The proposed algorithm can reach the best solution for 29 of the 35 benchmark problems and differs with the best-known solution of three benchmark problems only with 0.7 % average gap. We also used a new method to find the number of initial cells. The results show that GLCA may hopefully be a new approach for such kinds of difficult-to-solve problems. Moreover, a real-world industrial case is provided to show how the proposed algorithm works. Reducing expensive raw material waste is an important goal in the industry. In this paper, two-dimensional irregular cutting stock problem-a nesting problem that differs from other in their irregular shape of the pieces-with demand is studied, in which the required pieces has to be produced from large rectangular sheet minimizing material waste. Structure of this problem made it intractable for practical applications such that exact algorithms are not able to solve it in a reasonable time. Greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP) meta-heuristic algorithm is adapted to tackle the problem by providing high-quality solution in an appropriate time. The algorithm does not depend on the shape (convexity and regularity) of pieces and is able to deliver an optimum solution for instances up to 30 pieces of 7 different types.
