Power control is becoming increasingly essential for the fifth-generation (5G) and beyond systems. An example use-case, among others, is the unmanned-aerial-vehicle (UAV) communications where the nearly line-of-sight (LoS) radio channels may result in very low signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs). The authors in (Chiang et al., 2007) proposed to efficiently and reliably solve this kind of non-convex problem via a series of geometrical programmings (GPs) using condensation approximation. However, it is only applicable for a small-scale network with several communication pairs and practically infeasible with more (e.g., tens of) nodes to be jointly optimized. We therefore in this paper aim to provide new insights into this problem. By properly introducing auxiliary variables, the problem is transformed to an equivalent form which is simpler and more intuitive for condensation. A novel condensation method with linear complexity is also proposed based on the form. The enhancements make the GP-based power control feasible for both small- and especially large-scale networks that are common in 5G and beyond. The algorithm is verified via simulations. This paper studies how to apply game theory to realize a well-function device-to-device enabled vehicular (D2D-V) communication system, where the uplink channel allocated to the cellular user (CU) is reused by multiple D2D-V users. Considering a non-cooperative setting where the CU and D2D-V users are selfish and profit-driven, a novel Stackelberg game framework is proposed to model the single-leader-multiple-follower hierarchical competition, where the CU and D2D-V users act as the leader and the followers, respectively. For the current D2D-V networks, the interference in the dense vehicle scene often leads to extremely poor communication quality. Moreover, a vehicle's mobility leads to an uncertain channel state and further affects the stability of communication. To achieve effective communication, robust Stackelberg game-based resource allocation is developed, and a price-penalty mechanism is further proposed. Unlike previous Stackelberg games, the robust game is highlighted by handling the channel uncertainty which is embedded in the interference probability constraints. Besides, a game equilibrium (GE) is considered to be the solution and its existence and uniqueness are investigated. Also, a distributed robust power control and nonuniform price bargaining algorithm is proposed to approach the GE. Numerical simulations are performed to evaluate the algorithm performances, and the results indicate that the proposed algorithm is effective in high mobility vehicular networks under uncertain channel environments. In this paper, the joint spectrum sensing and resource allocation problem is investigated in a multi-band-multi-user cognitive radio (CR) network. Assuming imperfect spectrum sensing information, our goal is to jointly optimize the sensing threshold and power allocation strategy such that the average total throughput of secondary users (SUs) is maximized. In Addition, the power of SUs is constrained to keep the interference introduced to primary users under certain limit, which gives rise to a nonconvex mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) optimization problem. Our contribution in this paper is threefold. First, it is illustrated that the dimension of the nonconvex MINLP problem can be significantly reduced, which helps to re-formulate the optimization problem without resorting to integer variables. Second, it is demonstrated that the simplified formulation admits the canonical form of a monotonic optimization, and an $\epsilon $ -optimal solution can be achieved using the polyblock outer approximation algorithm. Third, a practical low-complexity spectrum sensing and resource allocation algorithm is developed to reduce the computational cost. Both Device-to-device (D2D) and full-duplex (FD) have been widely recognized as spectrum efficient techniques in the fifth-generation (5G) networks. By combining them, the FD-D2D aided underlaying networks (FN) has exhibited considerable technical advantages in terms of both spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). Considering the fact that the performance of FN may be severely affected by users’ workload, the workload-driven FN (WFN) must be investigated. In this paper, a deep learning based transmit power allocation (TPA) method is proposed for automatically determining the optimal transmit powers of co-spectrum cellular users (CUs) and D2D users (DUs) relying on a deep neural network. Unlike the conventional transmit-power-control schemes, in which complex optimization problems must be addressed in an iterative manner (it usually requires a relative longer computational time), the proposed scheme enables each DU to determine its transmit power with a relatively shorter time. Furthermore, an improved iterative subspace-pursuit algorithm, as the performance benchmark, is formulated for WFN. In addition, to reflect the influence imposed by the workload, the penalty-based statistical sum-date-rate (PSS) can be employed as the performance metric of WFN. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme is capable of achieving a PSS comparable with that of the traditional iterative-based algorithms even under heavy-workload scenarios, but the computational complexity of the former can be significantly reduced. This paper investigates subchannel allocation based on clustered interference alignment in dense small cell networks when all small cell user equipments (SUEs) have differentiated requirements for data streams. By imposing the condition that each cluster has a size not exceeding the maximum value achieved when each SUE needs only one data stream, we maximize the number of SUEs with guaranteed requirements for data streams, which is NP-hard. Hence, we propose a two-phase efficient solution with much lower complexity and reduced feedback overhead. First, similarity clustering is performed by graph partition, and then, subchannel allocation is done through a coloring algorithm. In multi-user downlink small cell networks, cooperative resource allocation (RA) within a small cell cluster is a key technique to enhance network capacity. However, capacity-maximizing RA in frequency-selective fading channels requires global channel state information (CSI) of users within a small cell cluster, which makes it infeasible in practical networks with limited direct link capacity. To circumvent this global CSI assumption, most of the existing studies on RA have been based on several CSI assumptions such as local CSI and local CSI at the transmitters (CSIT). Nevertheless, cost functions with local CSI or local CSIT in the literature rely on heuristic formulations, because the sum-rate cannot be computed if without global CSI. In this paper, we propose a deep reinforcement learning-based RA algorithm to maximize the sum-rate for any given limited information on instantaneous CSI or sum-rate at the previous period. The proposed scheme is not restricted to certain CSI assumptions, but attempts to find the best RA for any given information such as quantized local CSI and quantized local CSIT; thus, it is applicable to any given direct link capacity. The proposed algorithm is self-adaptive in time-varying channels, since it is not divided into training and test phases. We modify the target neural network (TNN) scheme to enhance the sum-rate and the convergence speed. Numerical simulations confirm that: i) the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional algorithms even under the same CSI assumption such as local CSI and local CSIT; ii) a flexible trade-off between the amount of CSI and the sum-rate is realizable in practical systems. In this paper, we present a civil aircrafts augmented space-air-ground integrated networks (CAA-SAGIN) architecture, where each mobile user can access multiple platforms simultaneously. With the target of ensuring fairness, we put forward the fair optimization strategies including resource allocation and resource auction. In the resource allocation, we formulate a service-oriented fair (SOF) resource allocation problem in order to minimize the difference between the allocated and required data rate. After introducing convex-relaxation and logarithmic approximation, the joint optimal solutions of subchannel and power allocation can be obtained by SOF iteration algorithm. Aiming at managing the terrestrial network overload, we present a user update mechanism. After applying SOF resource allocation for selected original users in sky access platforms, we propose a resource auction scheme so as to maximize the utility for both sides. First, we decompose the original problem into several subproblems and transform them into their lower bound by first-order approximation. Then, we can obtain the joint optimal solution with an alternating descent iterative method. From simulation results, we can find that CAA-SAGIN can bring great benefits to traditional terrestrial networks. To be differentiated from the literature, in this paper, we aim to alleviate the impact of pilot contamination (PC) on the massive MIMO systems by cooperatively scheduling users (rather than just assigning) among neighboring cells to share the limited orthogonal pilots. To this end, we develop the multi-cell cooperative scheduling (MCCS) algorithm together with the cooperative scheduling indexes (COSIs) for maximizing the data rate, maximizing the Jain's fairness index and reaching a better tradeoff in-between. For convenience, they are denoted by the COSIs for the CMDR, CMMF and CPF schedulers, respectively. However, its high computational complexity may somehow resists its from practical applications. Thus, a low-complexity cooperative proportional fairness (LC-CPF) algorithm is designed to well approach the MCCS algorithm using the CPF COSI; and at the meantime, the order of computational complexity can be significantly reduced. Moreover, its ability to reach a better tradeoff can still be maintained under the impact of high spectrum-sharing interference. In addition, it is interesting to find that using the proposed cooperative scheduling methods, the open-loop power control mechanism is no longer required for compensating the differences of received signal quality between users. The technology of static user-centric virtual cell (VC) has been designed in the fifth-generation (5G) ultra-dense networks (UDNs) for alleviating both frequent handover and inter-cell interference. However, to provide the user-centric services, the fairness of resource management must be involved when the common vehicular-to-X (V2X) messages are multicast to the vehicle groups. In this paper, a dynamic user-centric virtual cell (DUVC) scheme is proposed for updating adaptively the VC through the mobile tracking of the vehicles. Furthermore, an approximation algorithm is proposed for solving the max-min-fair problem of resource management in V2X communication in order to better support V2X services throughout the service VC. Numerical results are provided for demonstrating that the proposed DUVC scheme is suitable for implementing in the V2X communication. In the incoming communication system, especially for the battery constrained Internet of Things devices, consumption of power resources will be a critical performance metric. This point shows importance when throughput minimal requirement and interference limit have been carried out. This paper investigates such a power allocation problem in a multiple-parallel-channel wireless system to minimize the sum power consumed by the entire system, while meeting the sum power constrains for each group of channels and the whole system as well as meeting the throughput constraints for each of the groups and the system. Sum power minimization itself is also a key issue for margin-adaptive loading. Resorting to geometric concepts, an algorithm named as the group virtual bottom power water-filling (GVB-PWF) is proposed to solve the problem, including the large-scale problems, which computes the exact solution with a low degree of the polynomial computational complexity. Optimality of the proposed algorithm is also proved strictly. To the best of our knowledge, no prior algorithm in the open literature offered such an optimal solution to the proposed problem, with the merit of exactness and efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed power allocation algorithm uses less power about 25%, compared with the popular primal-dual interior-point method with the same amount of computations. LoRa has been recognized as one of the most promising low-power wide-area (LPWA) techniques. Since LoRa devices are usually powered by batteries, energy efficiency (EE) is an essential consideration. In this paper, we investigate the energy efficient resource allocation in LoRa networks to maximize the system EE (SEE) and the minimal EE (MEE) of LoRa users, respectively. Specifically, our objective is to maximize the corresponding EE by jointly exploiting user scheduling, spreading factor (SF) assignment, and transmit power allocations. To solve them efficiently, we first propose a suboptimal algorithm, including the low-complexity user scheduling scheme based on matching theory and the heuristic SF assignment approach for LoRa users scheduled on the same channel. Then, to deal with the power allocation, an optimal algorithm is proposed to maximize the SEE. To maximize the MEE of LoRa users assigned to the same channel, an iterative power allocation algorithm based on the generalized fractional programming and sequential convex programming is proposed. Numerical results show that the proposed user scheduling algorithm achieves near-optimal EE performance, and the proposed power allocation algorithms outperform the benchmarks. The approach of factor-graphs (FGs) is applied in the context of power control and user pairing in Device-to-Device (D2D) communications as an effective underlay concept in wireless cellular networks. D2D communications can increase the spectral efficiency of wireless cellular networks by establishing a direct link between devices with limited help from the evolved node base stations (eNBs). A well-designed user pairing and power allocation scheme with low complexity can remarkably improve the system's performance. In this paper, a simple and distributed FG based approach is utilized for power control and user pairing implementation in an underlay cellular network with D2D communications. A max-min criterion is proposed to maximize the minimum rate of all active users in the network, including the cellular and multiple D2D co-channel links in the uplink direction. An associated message-passing (MP) algorithm is presented to distributedly solve the resultant NP-hard maximization problem, with a guaranteed convergence compared to game theoretic and Q-learning based methods. The complexity and convergence of the proposed method is analyzed and numerical results confirm that the proposed scheme outperforms alternative algorithms in terms of complexity, while keeping the sum-rate of users nearly the same as centralized counterpart methods. In the heterogeneous networks (HetNets), the downlink-uplink decoupled (DUDE) user association is a very promising technology that can employ different association strategies for uplink and downlink. The DUDE mode has great potential for improving system capacity and frequency efficiency. However, interference between the DUDE user equipment (DUDE UE), macro user equipment (MUE) and small user equipment (SUE) still needs to be considered and properly tackled. Therefore, this paper presents an optimization scheme of frequency allocation and power control to improve the communication quality of users. Firstly, the multiple region frequency allocation (MRFA) scheme is proposed for non-uniform user distribution to alleviate interference among users and allocate spectrum resources equally to dense users. This scheme is modelled as a sub-region partition problem with maximum sum rate, which can disperse densely distributed users to different sub-bands for transmission. Secondly, the convergent power control (CPC) algorithm is considered to improve the transmission performance of each user. It can converge the transmit power to the optimal transmit power for reducing interference among co-channel users when there is no disturbance in the network. The CPC algorithm can also make the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) of each active user always greater than the target threshold until the end of communication by dynamically adjusting the transmit power of users. Simulation results show that the joint scheme of MRFA and CPC achieves a higher system throughput and better user performance than existing frequency allocation schemes or power control schemes. Femtocell is a promising technology for wireless service networks to facilitate sustainable and efficient services for users. This paper deals with a downlink joint channel assignment and power allocation problem with multiple channels, users, constraints, and uncertainties in the orthogonal frequency division of a multiple-access hierarchical femtocell network system. Specifically, a hierarchical robust Stackelberg game, which aims to achieve robust equilibrium, is first proposed for resource allocation with uncertainties. Then, a low-complexity, low-interference, high-efficiency, and high-performance algorithm is presented to handle the complex robust joint allocation problem. Considering the demand capacity of macro-base stations, an efficient fitness function in conjunction with particle swarm optimization-constriction factor, is utilized to yield the best response in the upper game to satisfy multiple constraints. Meanwhile, an iterative waterfilling algorithm is exploited to achieve the best response of femto-base stations in the lower game. Lastly, a stop protocol is established for two-tier users to accomplish an efficient robust Stackelberg equilibrium. In this paper, we investigate the multiple input multiple output (MIMO)-non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) transmission with the aid of location information. We first consider two users separated in both the distance and angle domains. With different access distances, NOMA could be used to serve the near-user and the far-user simultaneously, whereas spatial division multiple access (SDMA) would be applied if the two users have largely-separated angles of departure (AOD) that guarantees spatial orthogonality. Comparing the ergodic sum rates of these two multiple access (MA) schemes, we first characterize the preferable MA regions in the angle-distance plane. Analytical expression of the region boundary between NOMA and SDMA is derived. Moreover, NOMA-preferable regions are expressed in terms of the maximum distance difference and the minimum angle difference between the two users, respectively. On basis of these results, we further propose a location-based low-complexity user pairing algorithm for the general multiuser scenario. Numerical results confirm the accuracy of the derived region boundaries, and the simulations show that the proposed user pairing algorithm can effectively improve the resource utilization rate, compared to the conventional MA and user pairing schemes. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has emerged as a new multiple access paradigm for wireless networks. Although many results have been produced for NOMA, most of them are limited to theoretical exploration and performance analysis in cellular networks. Very limited progress has been made so far in the design of practical NOMA schemes for wireless local area networks (WLANs). In this paper, we propose a practical downlink NOMA scheme for WLANs and evaluate its performance in real-world wireless environments. Our NOMA scheme has three key components: precoder design, user grouping, and successive interference cancellation (SIC). On the transmitter side, we first formulate the precoding design problem as an optimization problem and then devise an efficient algorithm to construct precoders for downlink NOMA transmissions. We further propose a lightweight user grouping algorithm to ensure the success of SIC at the receivers. On the receiver side, we propose a new SIC method to decode the desired signal in the presence of strong interference. In contrast to existing SIC methods, our SIC method does not require channel estimation to decode the signals, thereby improving its resilience to interference. We have built a prototype of the proposed NOMA scheme on a wireless testbed. Experimental results show that, compared to orthogonal multiple access (OMA), the proposed NOMA scheme can significantly improve the weak user’s date rate (93% on average) and considerably improve WLAN’s weighted sum rate (36% on average). This paper considers a method for improving physical layer security of wireless networks with full-duplex radio. In particular, fast algorithms are developed to compute power allocations in subcarriers, subject to power and rate constraints, to maximize the secrecy capacity of a three-node network consisting of a source, a full-duplex destination, and an eavesdropper. A residual level of radio self-interference channel is considered. The optimal power allocation at the destination is found to be significant especially when its power budget is high. Also studied in this paper are a network with multiple full-duplex destinations and another network with multiple sources. Using the algorithms developed in this paper, we are able to show that a multiuser strategy that optimizes the power distributions among the users (in terms of either the sources or the destinations) can yield a substantial gain of secrecy capacity over a single-user strategy. By blending the concepts of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, in this paper, a novel hybrid scheme is conceived for supporting diverse services in future wireless systems. Motivating to maximize energy efficiency (EE), the joint resource management of user clustering (UC) and power allocation is investigated for the downlink hybrid NOMA systems. Under two different power consumption cases, the optimal resource allocation (Opt-RA) algorithm is developed with the help of converting the original mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem to the tractable decoupled problems. For practical implementation, the heuristic resource allocation (Heur-RA) algorithm is also proposed, and it includes a low-complexity UC algorithm based on the candidate search-and-allocation approach. Our simulation results show that, both the Opt-RA and Heur-RA algorithms achieve significantly higher EE performance than other existing algorithms. Further, the results also prove that, the hybrid NOMA conceived is able to exploit the advantages of NOMA scheme, and is superior to conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) in terms of EE, as well as achieving higher flexibility for system configuration than NOMA. The deployment of large-scale UAV clusters for cluster advantages will lead to high competition and excessive congestion of spectrum resources, which results in mutual interference. This paper investigates the interference-aware online spectrum access problem for multicluster Flying Ad-Hoc Network (FANET) under different network topologies, i.e., the locations of UAV clusters are varying. First, the problem is formulated as a data-assisted multistage channel access game with the goal of mitigating interference of all UAV clusters and decreasing channel switching cost during each slot. As we prove that the game is an exact potential game that guarantees at least one pure-strategy Nash equilibrium and interference-aware online channel preserving based concurrent best response (IOCPCBR) algorithm, an online distributed algorithm is proposed to achieve the desirable solution. This paper proposes a widely linear processing framework for multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) downlink systems. In the framework, a widely linear MIMO-NOMA (WL-MIMO-NOMA) model is derived by assuming that the base station transmits real-valued downlink signals. WL-MIMO-NOMA adopts complex-valued power allocation coefficients to stagger the user signals in phase. The main features of WL-MIMO-NOMA are the following: first, in general case, WL-MIMO-NOMA can remove all the inter-cluster interference and at least half of the intra-cluster interference; and second, in user pairing case, both interferences can be completely eliminated. This is distinct from the existing work where real power coefficients are used, which cannot guarantee the complete separation of the paired user signals because the signals transmitted to the paired users are overlapped in phase. In addition, the closed-form expressions of outage probabilities are derived. The phase difference of the complex power coefficients is optimized to minimize the outage probability. It is proven that, with the optimal phase difference, successive interference cancellation is unnecessary in user pairing case. Finally, the framework is extended to the mixed case of real/complex circular signals. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a promising scheme for the fifth generation (5G) of mobile communication systems. In this scheme, transmission to multiple users is performed on the same subchannel using superposition coding and successive interference cancellation. In this paper, we focus on a multi-cell network with two users’ data traffic models, namely elastic and streaming. We exploit the NOMA scheme in order to maximize the download elastic traffic rate at cells, without degrading the download streaming traffic rates. Since elastic traffic rates at different cells are interactive, we maximize the total elastic traffic rates assuming either perfect or partial channel state information available at each base station subject to a target rate for streaming users. Because of the interference due to NOMA as well as the interference among different cells, subchannel assignment and power allocation affect the system performance significantly. For this reason, we propose an iterative algorithm to jointly solve the subchannel assignment and the power allocation problem via the Hungarian algorithm and successive convex approximation, respectively. Energy efficiency (EE) and spectrum efficiency (SE) have received significant attentions on optimizing the network performance in cognitive radio networks. In this paper, an EE+SE tradeoff based target is considered for the primary users (PUs) and the secondary users (SUs). First of all, considering the orthogonal frequency division multiple access-based resource allocation (RA) for the underlying SUs, we formulate an objective function through minimizing a weighted sum of the secondary interference power, where the network performance of both PUs and SUs are guaranteed by the constraints on quality of service, power consumption and data rate. However, it is a NP-hard problem. In order to solve it, we propose a damped three dimensional (D3D) message-passing algorithm (MPA) based on deep learning. Specifically, a feed-forward neural network is devised and an analogous back propagation algorithm is developed to learn the optimal parameters of the D3D-MPA. To improve the computational efficiency of the allocation and the learning, a suboptimal RA scheme is deduced based on a damped two dimensional MPA. Radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting technique has received high attention as a promising technology for Internet of Things (IoT) based industrial systems due to its flexibility of energy supply. When multiple IoT gateways are used as directional RF energy sources, the direction and phase of RF energy transmissions influence the RF energy transmission efficiency. In this paper, we propose a phase-aware directional energy transmission algorithm (PA-DETA) where directional RF energy sources (e.g., IoT gateways) are connected to a controller and their operation parameters (i.e., RF energy transmission direction and initial phase) are decided by the controller to maximize the total harvested energy while maintaining the energy consumption in RF energy sources and the number of discarded packets due to energy depletion of harvesting nodes below certain levels. To optimize the performance of PA-DETA, we formulate a constraint Markov decision process and the optimal policy on the direction and initial phase of RF energy transmissions is obtained by a linear programming. Evaluation results demonstrate that PA-DETA with the optimal policy outperforms the comparison schemes in terms of the total harvested energy, the energy consumption in RF energy sources, and the packet discard rate. This paper considers a heavy loaded full-duplex (FD) small cell consisting of one FD base station and multiple half-duplex users where the number of subchannels is less than the number of uplink and downlink users. With the objective of maximizing the total sum-rate, a joint power allocation, and user pairing problem is formulated. To solve this problem, a novel decomposition method is proposed, which decouples the power allocation and user pairing problem into two subproblems. It is proven that the optimal solution of subproblems is the optimal solution of the original problem. Then, optimal algorithms are developed for the two subproblems. Traffic offloading via device-to-device communications is expected to play a major role to meet the exponential data traffic growth in wireless networks. In this paper, we focus on the problem of user capacity maximization in ultra-dense heterogeneous networks with device-to-device cooperation, where a large number of users in a given geographical area request common data content, such as video on demand streaming, with strict quality of service guarantees. We aim at finding the best strategy for delivering the content either over long range connectivity from the access points or short range connectivity from peer mobile terminals while meeting a target rate per served user. We formulate the multiuser resource management problem as an optimization problem including traffic offloading and channel allocation considering a very high user density reaching up to 1.75 users per square meter. We extend the system model to include mobile terminals acting as content owners by having the content cached locally, in order to further enhance the network capacity and coverage. We then propose an iterative resource management solution, which first solves the optimization subproblem of traffic offloading with orthogonal channels, and then optimally allocates channels to the transmitters with minimized interference due to channel reuse. We also propose efficient suboptimal hierarchical tree-based algorithms that operate in real time with dynamic and fast solutions for ultra-dense networks. For performance evaluation, we consider a realistic scenario consisting of a stadium topology with thousands of mobile terminals active simultaneously. This paper explores the problem of joint mode selection, spectrum management, power control, and interference mitigation for device-to-device (D2D) communication underlaying a Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) network. We consider a dynamic mode selection scenario, in which the modes (D2D or cellular) of the devices depend on optimal allocations. To improve the quality of service (QoS) for the users, the optimization objective in a corresponding problem is formulated in terms of buffer size of user equipments (UEs), which is estimated based on buffer status information collected by the UEs. The realizations of a resource allocation approach presented in the paper include its real-time and non-real-time implementations, as well as two modifications applicable to a standard LTE-Direct (LTE-D) network. Multiple linear constraint water filling problem (MLWFP) is solved innovatively in this paper, in which powers allotted to the $T$ resources of the transmitting user maximize the capacity of the transmitting user while controlling the interference to all the surrounded users of the wireless network. MLWFP is solved previously using iterative algorithms that take more number of iterations, thus, increasing the computational complexity. Unlike prior algorithms, the uniqueness of the proposed algorithm is in detecting the tight bounds for the number of nonzero powers $S$. Subsequently, $S$ is calculated from its bounds. This makes it possible for the proposed algorithm to compute $S$ nonzero powers alone (using the closed-form solution), whereas all the prior algorithms find powers iteratively for all $T$ ( $>$ $S$ ) resources. Thus, the worst case computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is reduced manyfold and is considerably lower than that of the prior algorithms by a factor of $O(T^2)$. In this correspondence paper, an underlay cognitive radio multicast network, consisting of a cognitive base station (CBS) and multiple multicast groups of secondary users (SUs), is considered. All SUs, belonging to a particular multicast group, are served by the CBS using a common primary user (PU) channel. The goal is to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of the system, through dynamic adaptation of target rate and transmit power for each multicast group, under the PUs’ individual interference constraint. The optimization problem formulated for this is proved to be nonquasi-concave with respect to the joint variation of the CBS's transmit power and target rate. A cognitive radio is a smart software-defined radio that can adapt its transmission parameters, such as transmit power level and modulation type, based on the wireless channel conditions. In this paper, we introduce a joint power allocation and constellation design algorithm for cognitive radios assuming spectrum sensing imperfections. The proposed algorithm minimizes the symbol error rate of the secondary user by designing optimized 2-D constellation points and assigning transmit power levels. The constellation points are assumed to be equally probable with zero-mean and unit average symbol energy. The transmit power levels are assigned such that they do not exceed a predefined maximum transmit power threshold, and that the interference resulting from the secondary user to the primary user does not exceed a predefined value. The outcomes of the proposed algorithm, which are constellation points and transmit power levels, can be stored in a lookup table that the secondary user can access to adapt its transmission parameters to the environment based on sensing decisions, maximum transmit powers, and interference levels allowed by the primary user. In this paper, the performance of an underlay multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cognitive radio system is analytically studied. In particular, the secondary transmitter operates in a spatial multiplexing transmission mode, while a zero-forcing detector is employed at the secondary receiver. Additionally, the secondary system is interfered by multiple randomly distributed single-antenna primary users (PUs). To enhance the performance of secondary transmission, optimal power allocation is performed at the secondary transmitter with a constraint on the interference temperature (IT) specified by the PUs. The outage probability of the secondary receiver is explicitly derived in an exact closed-form expression. Also, some special cases of practical interest, including colocated PUs and massive MIMO, are discussed. Further, to mitigate instantaneous excessive interference onto PUs caused by the time-average IT, an iterative antenna reduction algorithm is developed for the secondary transmitter and, accordingly, the average number of transmit antennas is analytically computed. In this paper, we investigate the energy efficiency of downlink transmissions in heterogeneous networks. Our objective is to satisfy the rate requirement of users while maximizing the energy efficiency of the network. We employ the fractional frequency reuse (FFR) scheme to increase the energy efficiency of downlink transmissions and to eliminate outages for the cell-edge users. We formulate the joint cell-center boundary selection for FFR, scheduling, and power allocation problems. This formulation gives us a mixed discrete (selection of the cell-center boundary selection for FFR and scheduling) and continuous (power allocation) optimization problem which is hard to solve jointly. In order to solve this problem, we propose a three-stage resource allocation algorithm. In the first stage, we propose a dynamic method to determine the cell-center region boundaries. In the second stage, we employ the Lagrangian-directed scheduler algorithm to incorporate the rate requirements of users. The third stage solves the power allocation subproblem using the Levenberg–Marquardt method combined with dual decomposition. In order to make the base stations further reduce intercell interference, interference pricing mechanism is applied. This scheme penalizes the utility of a base station with the interference it creates. The performance of the proposed algorithm is simulated in a long-term evolution (LTE) network simulation tool. Multicarrier low-density-spreading multiple access (MC-LDSMA) is a promising multiple access technique that enables near-optimal multiuser detection. In MC-LDSMA, each user's symbol is spread over a small set of subcarriers, and each subcarrier is shared by multiple users. The unique structure of MC-LDSMA makes the radio resource allocation more challenging compared with some well-known multiple access techniques. In this paper, we study the radio resource allocation for a single-cell MC-LDSMA system. First, we consider the single-user case and derive the optimal power allocation and subcarriers partitioning schemes. Then, by capitalizing on the optimal power allocation of the Gaussian multiple-access channel, we provide an optimal solution for MC-LDSMA that maximizes the users' weighted sum rate under relaxed constraints. Due to the prohibitive complexity of the optimal solution, suboptimal algorithms are proposed based on the guidelines inferred by the optimal solution. The performance of the proposed algorithms and the effect of subcarrier loading and spreading are evaluated through Monte Carlo simulations. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithms significantly outperform conventional static resource allocation, and MC-LDSMA can improve the system performance in terms of spectral efficiency and fairness in comparison with orthogonal frequency-division multiple access. To efficiently trade off system sum rate and link fairness, power allocation in wireless spectrum-sharing networks often concentrates upon proportional fairness. The corresponding problem has been proved to be convex for a single tone but NP-hard for more than two tones. However, in the two-tone case, the complexity of the problem for achieving proportional fairness has not been addressed yet. In this paper, we prove that the issue of proportional-fairness optimization for the two-tone situation is NP-hard by reducing the problem of finding the maximum independent set in an undirected graph to it. Deploying femtocells underlaying macrocells is a promising way to improve the capacity and enhance the coverage of cellular systems. However, such a two-tier network also gives rise to a cross-tier and intratier interference issue that should be properly addressed to acquire the potential performance gain. In this paper, we study the resource-allocation (RA) problem in a two-tier orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) access-based heterogeneous cellular network, where the femtocells that employ a closed access strategy are equipped with a cognitive radio (CR) function to identify radio environment so that they can share subchannels with the macrocells without generating excessive interference to the macrocell users (MUs), which fall into the coverage of the femtocells. We formulate an optimization task to maximize the sum throughput of the femtocell users (FUs) under the consideration of imperfect spectrum sensing and channel uncertainty while controlling the interference to the MUs below their bearable thresholds in the sense of probability. We introduce a conservative convex approximation to the formulated problem and develop a fast algorithm to solve it by exploiting its structure. Recent advances in loop interference cancelation techniques enable full-duplex relaying (FDR) systems, which transmit and receive simultaneously in the same band with high spectrum efficiency. Meanwhile, wireless virtualization has attracted a lot of attention from both academia and industry because it can provide more flexibility, diversity, and other benefits in the process of wireless network design, construction, operation, and management. In this paper, we introduce the idea of wireless virtualization into FDR cellular networks. We present in this paper a novel proactive interference avoidance scheme for mobile-to-mobile (M2M) communication as an underlay in Long-Term Evolution (LTE) downlink networks. The proposed scheme introduces an intelligent user-selective resource allocation algorithm that aims to proactively avoid interference between M2M pairs and LTE regular users while achieving a satisfactory link budget for both M2M and LTE regular links. The proposed resource allocation algorithm is based on a novel low-complexity interference estimation approach that requires only channel quality indicator (CQI) information (CSI). Since the CQI reporting mechanism has been already implemented in current LTE systems, the proposed algorithm is indeed practical and standard compatible, compared with the existing works that require perfect knowledge of the channel state information (CSI). In this research, achievable data throughput with LTE-compliant adaptive modulation and coding has been adopted as the optimization measurement, rather than the information-theoretic capacity. Therefore, the performance of the proposed scheme is practically realizable in LTE communication systems. Since the performance of the proposed scheme highly relies on the accuracy of CQI feedback, we also carry out performance analysis to evaluate the impact of CQI estimation error and delay. In this paper, we study the energy-efficient resource allocation problem for device-to-device (D2D) communication underlaying cellular networks, which aims to maximize the minimum weighted energy efficiency of D2D links while guaranteeing minimum data rates for cellular links. We first characterize the optimal power allocation of the cellular links to transform the original resource allocation problem into the joint subchannel and power allocation problem for D2D links. We then propose three resource allocation algorithms with different complexity levels, namely, dual-based, branch-and-bound (BnB), and relaxation-based rounding (RBR) algorithms. While the dual-based algorithm solves the problem by using the dual decomposition method, the BnB and RBR algorithms tackle the problem by employing the relaxation approach. In this paper, we consider the coordinated multipoint (CoMP) transmission design for the downlink cloud radio access network (Cloud-RAN). Our design aims to optimize the set of remote radio heads (RRHs) serving each user and the precoding and transmission power to minimize the total transmission power while maintaining the fronthaul capacity and users' quality-of-service (QoS) constraints. The fronthaul capacity constraint involves a nonconvex and discontinuous function that renders the optimal exhaustive search method unaffordable for large networks. To address this challenge, we propose two low-complexity algorithms. The first pricing-based algorithm solves the underlying problem through iteratively tackling a related pricing problem while appropriately updating the pricing parameter. In the second iterative linear-relaxed algorithm, we directly address the fronthaul constraint function by iteratively approximating it with a suitable linear form using a conjugate function and solving the corresponding convex problem. For performance evaluation, we also compare our proposed algorithms with two existing algorithms in the literature. Finally, extensive numerical results are presented, which illustrate the convergence of our proposed algorithms and confirm that our algorithms significantly outperform the state-of-the-art existing algorithms. Direct device-to-device (D2D) links are proposed as a possible enabler for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, where the incurred intracell interference and the stringent latency and reliability requirements are challenging issues. In this paper, we investigate the radio resource management problem for D2D-based V2V communication. First, we analyze and transform the latency and reliability requirements of V2V communication into optimization constraints that are computable using only the slowly varying channel information. This transformation opens up the possibility of extending certain existing D2D techniques to cater to V2V communication. Second, we propose a problem formulation that fulfills the different requirements of V2V communication and traditional cellular communication. The cross-layer utility maximization problem, which is subject to stability constraints for a multicommodity wireless network where all links share the same number of orthogonal channels, is considered in this paper. We assume a time-slotted network, where the channel gains randomly change from one slot to another. The optimal cross-layer network control policy can be decomposed into the folloing three subproblems: 1) flow control; 2) next-hop routing and in -node scheduling; and 3) power and rate control, which is also known as resource allocation (RA). These subproblems span the layers from the physical layer to the transport layer. In every time slot, a network controller decides the amount of each commodity data admitted to the network layer, schedules different commodities over the network's links, and controls the power and rate allocated to every link in every channel. To fully exploit the available multichannel diversity, we consider the general case, where multiple links can be activated in the same channel during the same time slot, and the interference is controlled solely through power and rate control. Unfortunately, the RA subproblem is not yet amendable to a convex formulation, and in fact, it is NP-hard. The main contribution of this paper is to develop efficient RA algorithms for multicommodity multichannel wireless networks by applying complementary geometric programming and homotopy methods to analyze the quantitative impact of gains that can be achieved at the network layer in terms of end-to-end rates and network congestion by incorporating different RA algorithms. Although the global optimality of the solution cannot be guaranteed, the numerical results show that the proposed algorithms perform close to the (exponentially complex) optimal solution methods. Moreover, they efficiently exploit the available multichannel diversity, which provides significant gains at the network layer in terms of end-to-end rates and network congestion. Interference alignment (IA) is a promising technique for interference management and can be applied to spectrum sharing in cognitive radio (CR) networks. However, the sum rate may fall short of the theoretical maximum, particularly at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and the quality of service (QoS) of the primary user (PU) may not be guaranteed. In addition, power allocation (PA) in IA-based CR networks is largely ignored, which can further improve its performance. Thus, in this paper, PA in IA-based CR networks is studied. To guarantee the QoS requirement of the PU, its minimal transmitted power is derived. Then, we propose three PA algorithms to maximize the throughput of secondary users (SUs), the energy efficiency (EE) of the network, and the requirements of SUs, respectively, while guaranteeing the QoS of the PU. To reduce the complexity, the closed-form solutions of these algorithms are further studied in detail. The outage probability of the PU according to its rate threshold is also derived to analyze the performance of these algorithms. Moreover, we propose a transmission-mode adaptation scheme to further improve the PU's performance when its QoS requirement cannot be guaranteed at low SNR, and it can be easily combined with the proposed PA algorithms. Coordinated tethering over a white-space spectrum is investigated herein to increase mobile broadband spectrum efficiency in densely populated areas. This paper proposes an algorithm for operator-controlled tethering over white spaces. The proposed approach does not add to the existing infrastructure but instead allows the individual nodes to act as “hotspots” and to tether data to and from other nodes. The proposed algorithm iteratively clusters the nodes into hotspots and slaves and allocates resources to maximize spectrum utility. The proposed method's dynamic characteristics allow cellular systems to hierarchically evolve in dense areas as necessary. A signaling framework for node-to-node and base-station-to-node communication that enables such operator-controlled tethering is also presented. In this paper, we consider the problem of power control for sum-rate maximization on multiple interfering links [transmitter–receiver pairs (Tx–RX)] under a sum power constraint. We consider a single-frequency network, where all pairs are operating in the same frequency band, thereby creating interference with each other. We study the power-allocation problem for sum-rate maximization with and without quality-of-service (QoS) requirements on individual links. When the objective is only sum-rate maximization without QoS guarantees, we develop an analytic solution to decide optimal power allocation for a two-TX–RX-pair problem. We also develop a low-complexity iterative algorithm for a three-TX–RX-pair problem. For a generic N>\3 TX–RX pair problem, we develop two low-complexity suboptimal power-allocation algorithms. The first algorithm is based on the idea of making clusters of two or three TX–RX pairs and then leveraging the power-allocation results obtained for the two- and three-TX–RX-pair problems. The second algorithm is developed by using a high signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) approximation, and this algorithm can be also implemented in a distributed manner by individual TXs. We then consider the same problem but with additional QoS guarantees for individual links. Device-to-device (D2D) communications bring significant benefits to mobile multimedia services in local areas. However, these potential advantages hinge on intelligent resource sharing between potential D2D pairs and cellular users. In this paper, we study the problem of energy-efficient uplink resource sharing over mobile D2D multimedia communications underlaying cellular networks with multiple potential D2D pairs and cellular users. We first construct a novel analytical model of energy efficiency for different sharing modes, which takes into account quality-of-service (QoS) requirements and the spectrum utilization of each user. Then, we formulate the energy-efficient resource sharing problem as a nontransferable coalition formation game, with the characteristic function that accounts for the gains in terms of energy efficiency and the costs in terms of mutual interference. Moreover, we develop a distributed coalition formation algorithm based on the merge-and-split rule and the Pareto order. The distributed solution is characterized through novel stability notions and can be adapted to user mobility. From it, we obtain the energy-efficient sharing strategy on joint mode selection, uplink reusing allocation, and power management. One of the key challenges in wireless networking is allocating the available radio resources to maximize key service delivery parameters such as the aggregate throughput and the multimedia quality of experience (QoE). We propose a novel and effective scheduling policy that allocates resource blocks, such that interference power is shifted toward capacity-saturated users, while improving the throughput of unsaturated users. The highlight of this paper is that the proposed scheme can dramatically improve the performance of cells that have a high discrepancy in its signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) distribution, which is typical in urban areas. The results show that a free-lunch (FL) solution is possible, whereby for negligible performance degradation in the saturated users, a large improvement in the nonsaturated users can be obtained. However, on average, the number of FL user pairings is low. By relaxing the degradation constraints, the non-FL (NFL) solution can yield a greater multiuser throughput gain. Motivated by a surge in mobile multimedia traffic, we further demonstrate that the proposed scheduling may have a profound impact on both energy efficiency and QoE of multimedia service delivery. Recently, operators have resorted to femtocell networks to enhance indoor coverage and increase system capacity. Nevertheless, to successfully deploy such solution, efficient resource-allocation algorithms and interference mitigation techniques should be deployed. The new applications delivered by operators require large amounts of network bandwidth. Although, some customers may want to pay more in exchange for a better quality of service (QoS), some others need fewer resources and can be charged accordingly. Hence, we consider an orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access (OFDMA) femtocell network serving both QoS-constrained high-priority (HP) and best-effort (BE) users. Our objective is to satisfy a maximum number of HP users while serving BE users as well as possible. This multiobjective optimization problem is NP-hard. For this aim, we propose in this paper a new resource-allocation and admission control algorithm, which is called QoS-based femtocell resource allocation (Q-FCRA), based on clustering and taking into account QoS requirements. In cognitive networks, the cooperative transmission between primary user and secondary user has been regarded as an effective method to promote harmonious coexistence between themselves where how to balance user's benefits and improve the system throughput is a key issue. In this paper, we study the joint pricing and power allocation strategy for the cognitive relay transmission by using the Stackelberg model which is a classical dynamic game model. We first give presentations of a cognitive relay model over Rayleigh fading channels and then investigate the primary benefits in power saving during this cooperation. According to the profits of primary user (as a game leader) and secondary user (as a follower), corresponding utility functions which describe their overall profits in the cognitive relay transmission are derived one by one. Then, optimal strategies for interference pricing and power allocation are fixed by resolving the objective functions. This paper investigates the resource-sharing problem in vehicular networks, including both vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication links. A novel underlaying resource-sharing communication mode for vehicular networks is proposed, in which different V2V and V2I communication links are permitted to access the same resources for their individual data transmission. To solve the resource-sharing problem in vehicular networks, we, for the first time, apply graph theory and propose the following two interference graph-based resource-sharing schemes: 1) the interference-aware graph-based resource-sharing scheme and 2) the interference-classified graph-based resource-sharing scheme. In this paper, we consider power allocation in multiband cognitive radio (CR) networks, where multiple secondary users (SUs) transmit via a common relay and compete for the transmit power of the relay. We employ a hybrid overlay/underlay spectrum sharing scheme, allowing the SU to adapt its way of accessing the licensed spectrum to the status of the primary user (PU). If the PU is detected to be idle at the selected channel, the SU works in an overlay mode; else, it works in spectrum underlay. In addition, an auction-based power-allocation scheme is proposed to solve power competition of multiple SUs. In this paper, we propose two cross-layer algorithms, namely, the Power-optimal Scheduling Algorithm (PSA) and the Throughput-optimal Scheduling Algorithm (TSA), to minimize energy consumption and to maximize throughput, respectively, in multihop wireless networks. Our algorithms guarantee a flow-based minimum data rate and jointly integrate congestion control, power allocation, routing, and link rate scheduling. Different from traditional algorithms that assume infinite buffers, the proposed algorithms deterministically upper bound the flow-based packet queue length and thus can be employed in multihop networks with finite buffers. In addition, the algorithms achieve a power expenditure/throughput “\epsilon-close” to the optimal value, with a tradeoff of order O(\1/\epsilon) in buffer size. The average end-to-end delay upper bound can also be derived from the finite buffer property.
