Traffic congestion in freeway network is a prevalent transportation problem and leads to a strong degradation of freeway network facilities. This paper proposes a new coordinated optimization approach for freeway network, aiming to relieve the traffic congestion in freeway network equipped with the coordinated traffic controllers. The challenge is how to solve the problem between the traffic control goals of each path and those of the network. In this paper, the bi-level programming theory is used to address this problem. More exactly, in the path level, the optimal control model is designed to relieve congestion in each path of the test network. Furthermore, in the network level, the optimal model considers the traffic equilibrium and cost optimization. The efficiency of the proposed approach is tested on a well-known traffic network calibrated by the field test data of freeway network. SUMMARY Roadside trees in Singapore are regularly trimmed for the purpose of traffic safety and roadside tree-trimming project is one typical type of short-term work zone projects. To implement such a short-term work zone project, contractors usually divide an entire work zone into multiple subwork zones with the uniform length. This paper aims to determine an optimal subwork zone strategy for the short-term work zone projects in four-lane two-way freeways with time window and uniform subwork zone length constraints. The deterministic queuing model is employed to estimate total user delay caused by the work zone project by taking into account variable traffic speeds. Based on the user delay estimations, this paper proceeds to build a minimization model subject to time window and uniform length constraints for the optimal subwork zone strategy problem. This paper also presents a variation of the minimization model to examine the impact of unequal subwork zone length constraint. Since these minimization models belong to the mixed-integer non-differentiable optimization problems, an iterative algorithm embedding with the genetic simulated annealing method is thus proposed to solve these models. Due to relatively low passenger demand, headways of suburban bus route are usually longer than those of urban bus route. Actually it is also difficult to balance the benefits between passengers and operators, subject to the service standards from the government. Hence the headway of a suburban bus route is usually determined on the empirical experience of transport planners. To cope with this problem, this paper proposes an optimization model for designing the headways of suburban bus routes by minimizing the operating and user costs. The user costs take into account both the waiting time cost and the crowding cost. The feasibility and validity of the proposed model are shown by applying it to the Route 206 in Jiangning district, Nanjing city of China. Weightages of passengers' cost and operating cost are further discussed, considering different passenger flows. This paper presents an integrated model and its solution algorithm for freeway corridor control during incident management. With a parallel arterial as the detour route, the proposed model aims at producing the optimal diversion rates from the freeway mainline to relieve the congestion at the incident segment and concurrently adjust signal timings at the arterial intersections to best accommodate the detour traffic. Different from previous studies, the presented model and algorithm have the following two critical features: 1) modeling explicitly the evolution of detour traffic along the ramps and surface streets with a set of dynamic network flow formulations to capture the local bottlenecks caused by demand surge due to diversion operations and to properly set the responsive signal timing plans and 2) developing a multiobjective optimization framework to maximize the utilization of the available corridor capacity via detour operations but not to incur excessive congestion on the arterials and ramps. This study employs a genetic algorithm (GA)-based heuristic to efficiently yield the reliable solution, depending on the decision maker's preference. Extensive numerical tests on a segment along the I-95 corridor with its neighboring arterials have demonstrated the potential of the developed model for integrated freeway corridor control. This paper proposes different "dynamic" estimators using time-varying traffic counts to obtain (discrete) time-varying OD flows or average OD flows. All the estimators can combine counts with other available information, e.g., out-dated matrices and surveys, on a general network and can be formulated as optimization problems. In the case of time-varying OD flows, two types of estimators are proposed. Simultaneous estimators produce joint estimates of the whole set of OD matrices, one for each time slice, whereas sequential estimators produce a sequence of OD estimates for successive time slices. A particular type of simultaneous and sequential estimator (namely Generalized Least Squares) was tested on the Italian Brescia-Padua motorway for which "true" OD flows over a whole day were available.
