In recent years, Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA) is a kind of meta-heuristic optimization algorithm with simple structure, simple parameters and trigonometric function principle. It has been proved that it has good competitiveness among the existing optimization algorithms. However, the single mechanism of SCA leads to its insufficient utilization of the information of the whole population, insufficient ability to jump out of local optima and poor performance at solving complex objective function. Therefore, this paper introduces social learning strategy (SL) and elite opposition-based learning (EOBL) strategy to improve SCA, and proposes novel algorithm: enhancing Sine Cosine Algorithm based on elite opposition-based learning and social learning (ESLSCA). Social learning strategy takes full advantage of information from the entire population. The elite opposition-based learning strategy provides a possibility for the algorithm to jump out of local optima and increases the diversity of the population. To demonstrate the performance of ESLSCA, this paper uses 22 well-known benchmark test functions and CEC2019 test function set to evaluate ESLSCA. Salp swarm algorithm (SSA) is one of the efficient recent meta‐heuristic optimization algorithms, where it has been successfully utilized in a wide range of optimization problems in different fields. In the research process, it is found that it is very difficult to maintain the balance between the exploration and exploitation capabilities of a certain algorithm. Therefore, one of the main purposes of this article is to provide an algorithm that can intelligently balance between exploration and exploitation, so that it can balance exploration and exploitation capabilities. Later, in the research process, it was found that the sine and cosine function and the salp foraging trajectory have a high mathematical similarity, which greatly improves the optimization ability of the algorithm. In addition, the variable neighbourhood strategy can appropriately expand the optimization range of the algorithm. So in this paper, a novel golden sine cosine salp swarm algorithm with variable neighbourhood search scheme (GSCSSA‐VNS) is proposed, the another objective of proposing this algorithm is as a new optimization method for shape matching. As a relatively new branch, atomic potential matching (APM) model is inspired by potential field attractions. Compared to the conventional edge potential function (EPF) model, APM has been verified to be less sensitive to intricate backgrounds in the test image and far more cost effective in the computation process. The Sine-Cosine algorithm (SCA) is a population-based metaheuristic algorithm utilizing sine and cosine functions to perform search. To enable the search process, SCA incorporates several search parameters. But sometimes, these parameters make the search in SCA vulnerable to local minima/maxima. To overcome this problem, a new Multi Sine-Cosine algorithm (MSCA) is proposed in this paper. MSCA utilizes multiple swarm clusters to diversify & intensify the search in-order to avoid the local minima/maxima problem. Secondly, during update MSCA also checks for better search clusters that offer convergence to global minima effectively. To assess its performance, we tested the MSCA on unimodal, multimodal and composite benchmark functions taken from the literature. Experimental results reveal that the MSCA is statistically superior with regards to convergence as compared to recent state-of-the-art metaheuristic algorithms, including the original SCA. The Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) is a new advanced algorithm that is based on the humpback whale chasing process. The main problem addressed by Whale Optimization Algorithm, similar to other metaheuristic algorithms, is premature convergence. This paper introduces the Sine Cosine Algorithm in the Whale Optimization Algorithm optimization process to enhance global convergence and to improve enactment. The proposed algorithm, called WOA-SCA, has local optima evasion of Whale Optimization Algorithm and high capability to increase the exploration. The implementation of the proposed WOA-SCA algorithm is investigated through a series of tests on common benchmark test functions, with the results compared to those of six alternative algorithms. The results of the investigations show that the proposed WOA-SCA algorithm works better in concert with the outputs of the benchmark functions. Also, to validate the proficiencies of the WOA-SCA, it has been used to resolve the real-world problem of Facial Emotion Recognition (FER). The field of facial emotion recognition is a fascinating new area of research that gives us the ability to identify the human face's expression in natural settings. A large part of the standard methodologies certainly does not indicate the looks because the attitudes depend on the human face sections' behaviors. The paper proposes the efficient Facial Emotion Recognition method using MultiSVNNN based on WOA-SCA (the proposed WOA-SCA based Multi-Support Vector Neural Network). Using the ADFES dataset for the disgust expression, our results demonstrate that the proposed work yields average emotion recognition accuracy of 98% associated to 80% and 96% based on BBPSO and MFOPSO, respectively. Finding feasible solutions to real-world problems is a crucial task. Metaheuristic algorithms are widely used in many fields due to the variety of solutions they can produce. The grey wolf optimizer (GWO) is a relatively novel population-based metaheuristic algorithm that has been shown to have good optimization performance. However, due to the insufficient diversity of wolves in some cases, this approach can lead to locally optimal situations. Therefore, this paper proposes a grey wolf optimization method based on a beetle antenna strategy (BGWO) that gives the leader wolf a sense of hearing to improve the global search ability and reduce unnecessary searches. In addition, to balance exploration and exploitation, a nonlinear dynamic control parameter update strategy based on the cosine function is proposed. To evaluate the performance of the proposed BGWO, this paper uses 23 standard benchmark functions to test the method in different dimensions. Moreover, four well-known engineering problems are used to evaluate the ability of the proposed algorithm to obtain real-world problem solutions. The experimental results show that BGWO has superior performance and is competitive with many state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of solution accuracy, convergence rate, and stability. Sine cosine algorithm (SCA) is a recently developed and widely used metaheuristic to perform global optimization tasks. Due to its simplicity in structure and reasonable performance, it has been utilized to solve several real-world applications. This paper proposes an alternate version of the SCA by adopting the greedy approach of search, crossover and exponentially decreased transition control parameter to overcome the issues of low exploitation, insufficient diversity and premature convergence. The proposed algorithm, called ECr-SCA, is validated and compared with the original SCA using computational time, diversity, performance index, statistical and convergence analysis on a set of 23 standard benchmark problems. Later, the proposed ECr-SCA is compared with seventeen other algorithms including improved versions of the SCA and state-of-the-art algorithms. Furthermore, the ECr-SCA is used to train multi-layer perceptron and the results are compared with variants of SCA and other metaheuristics. Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA) that is one of the population-based metaheuristic optimization algorithms basically consists of the updating mechanism based on sine and cosine functions. In this algorithm, a few random and adaptive variables are also utilized for more effective motions of the candidate solutions. SCA has some drawbacks like other some metaheuristic algorithms. SCA tends to be stuck into the local regions in the search space and this affects negatively on the computational effort required to find the best solution point in the search space. This paper presents four different improved versions of SCA. The proposed improvements on original SCA are the innovations on the updating mechanism of SCA. To evaluate the performances of Improved Sine Cosine Algorithms (ImpSCAs), well-known numerical optimization problems including CEC 2014 test suite are used. Firstly, different analyses of the proposed ImpSCAs are dealt with such as the convergence analysis, search history analysis, trajectory analysis, average distance analysis, and computational complexity analysis. Secondly, the proposed four versions of ImpSCAs are compared with the original SCA for CEC 2014 benchmark problems with dimension sizes of 10D, 30D and 50D. Finally, original SCA and ImpSCAs are adapted to select optimal feature combination and they are tested for 10 feature selection datasets taken from the UCI machine learning repository. The benchmark results show that the performances of the ImpSCA 1 , ImpSCA 2 , and ImpSCA 4 are better than that of the original SCA. From the feature selection results, it is observed that three versions of ImpSCAs (except ImpSCA 3) outperform the original SCA in 80% of the datasets. Feature selection plays a vital role in building machine learning models. Irrelevant features in data affect the accuracy of the model and increase the training time needed to build the model. Feature selection is an important process to build Intrusion Detection System (IDS). In this paper, a wrapper feature selection algorithm for IDS is proposed. This algorithm uses the pigeon inspired optimizer to utilize the selection process. A new method to binarize a continuous pigeon inspired optimizer is proposed and compared to the traditional way for binarizing continuous swarm intelligent algorithms. The proposed algorithm was evaluated using three popular datasets: KDDCUP 99, NLS-KDD and UNSW-NB15. The proposed algorithm outperformed several feature selection algorithms from state-of-the-art related works in terms of TPR, FPR, accuracy, and F-score.
