Driving data and physical parametrizations can significantly impact the performance of regional dynamical atmospheric models in reproducing hydrometeorologically relevant variables. Our study addresses the water budget sensitivity of the Weather Research and Forecasting Model System WRF (WRF-ARW) with respect to two cumulus parametrizations (Kain-Fritsch, Betts-Miller-Janjić), two global driving reanalyses (ECMWF ERA-INTERIM and NCAR/NCEP NNRP), time variant and invariant sea surface temperature and optional gridded nudging. The skill of global and downscaled models is evaluated against different gridded observations for precipitation, 2 m-temperature, evapotranspiration, and against measured discharge time-series on a monthly basis. Multi-year spatial deviation patterns and basin aggregated time series are examined for four globally distributed regions with different climatic characteristics: Siberia, Northern and Western Africa, the Central Australian Plane, and the Amazonian tropics. The simulations cover the period from 2003 to 2006 with a horizontal mesh of 30 km. The results suggest a high sensitivity of the physical parametrizations and the driving data on the water budgets of the regional atmospheric simulations. While the global reanalyses tend to underestimate 2 m-temperature by 0.2-2 K, the regional simulations are typically 0.5-3 K warmer than observed. Many configurations show difficulties in reproducing the water budget terms, e.g. with long-term mean precipitation biases of 150 mm month and higher. This research examines the suitability of four land surface schemes (LSSs) in Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model over different West Africa's (WA) climatological zones, namely Guinea, Savanna, and Sahel. The four LSSs include Noah, Noah (Multiparameterization) MP, Noah MP with the groundwater option (Noah GW), and Community Land Model Version 4 (CLM4). A 3-month simulation was carried out with each LSS during July–September 2012. Temperature and dew point temperature (Dpt) were evaluated using the ERA5 dataset, while precipitation was evaluated using the TRMM product. Based on the three variables, CLM4 is most suitable for the Guinea zone; Noah, Noah MP, and CLM4 perform equally well for Savanna; and Noah MP is most suitable for the Sahel zone. In general, and over all zones, Noah MP is most suitable for precipitation simulation, while CLM4 is the best for dew point temperature as Noah MP and Noah GW are equally suitable for 2 m temperature. Noah GW overestimates surface moisture, altering surface fluxes, increasing evaporative fraction, and increasing convective activities (especially in semi-arid areas), which led to a significant bias in temperature and precipitation. Also, over the Savanna and Sahel zone, a strong African Easterly Jet (AEJ) with a weak Tropical Easterly Jet (TEJ) in Noah led to lower rainfall. In contrast, weak AEJ with strong TEJ in Noah MP and Noah GW caused higher rainfall. While weather forecasts are used for the warning of flood events and climate projections for long-term climate adaptation measures, it is the knowledge of the coming months that is crucial for the management and control of water reservoirs, e.g. for power generation or for irrigation. This is particularly relevant in regions characterized by dry seasons, i.e. semi-arid areas. In semi-arid regions, unlike in arid regions, much can be achieved with sustainable and science-based water resources management. Our study addresses the regionalization of globally available seasonal forecasts to support local water resources management and decision-makers in semi-arid regions. We investigate the performance of the global seasonal predictions of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF SEAS5) with forecast horizons up to 7 months in advance for selected semi-arid target regions. These include the catchments of the Rio Sao Francisco in northeastern Brazil, the Rio Chira in Ecuador / Peru and the Karun in Iran. The uncertainties in the global seasonal forecasting system are covered by ensemble predictions. As a measure of the quality of the seasonal ensemble predictions of precipitation and temperature, we analyze accuracy (mean absolute error skill score), overall performance (continuous ranked probability skill score), sharpness (interquantile range skill score) and reliability. The ensemble forecasts are bias corrected with a quantile-quantile transformation and compared with global gridded satellite data (GPM) and station observation data. Results generally show higher performance measures for the retrospective precipitation forecasts of the Rio Sao Francisco area than for the Rio Chira or the Karun area. For the Rio Sao Francisco area, the seasonal predictions of the rainfall over the four main months of the rainy season are even more efficient than statistical reference forecasts up to two months ahead.One reason for the limited performance of the global seasonal forecasts in the catchment areas of the Rio Chira and the Karun can be the complex topography and the inadequate horizontal resolution of 35 km of the global forecasting system for regional applications. We therefore use the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to dynamically downscale the global forecasts. Our dynamical downscaling is progressively nesting from 35 km to 9 km and finally to 3 km. Finally, these refined seasonal predictions will not only serve for hydrometeorological drought forecasts in the catchment areas, but also serve as driving data in further subsequent impact modelling for hydrological-, sediment- and ecosystem modeling within the international framework of this study. The number of solar power plants has increased in West Africa in recent years. Reliable reanalysis data and short-term forecasting of solar irradiance from numerical weather prediction models could provide an economic advantage for the planning and operation of solar power plants, especially in data-poor regions such as West Africa. This study presents a detailed assessment of different shortwave (SW) radiation schemes from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model option Solar (WRF-Solar), with appropriate configurations for different atmospheric conditions in Ghana and the southern part of Burkina Faso. We applied two 1-way nested domains (D1 = 15 km and D2 = 3 km) to investigate four different SW schemes, namely, the Community Atmosphere Model, Dudhia, RRTMG, Goddard, and RRTMG without aerosol and with aerosol inputs (RRTMG_AERO). The simulation results were validated using hourly measurements from different automatic weather stations established in the study region in recent years. The results show that the RRTMG_AERO_D01 generally outperforms the other SW radiation schemes to simulate global horizontal irradiance under all-sky condition [RMSE = 235 W m−2 (19%); MAE = 172 W m−2 (14%)] and also under cloudy skies. Moreover, RRTMG_AERO_D01 shows the best performance on a seasonal scale. Both the RRTMG_AERO and Dudhia experiments indicate a good performance under clear skies. However, the sensitivity study of different SW radiation schemes in the WRF-Solar model suggests that RRTMG_AERO gives better results. Precipitation change is critical for the Three-River Headwaters (TRH) region, which serves downstream communities in East Asia. The spring (March–May) precipitation over the TRH region shows an increasing trend from 1979 to 2018, as revealed by a Chinese gridded precipitation product (CN05.1). However, the physical processes responsible for this precipitation change are still unclear. This study investigated the characteristics of spring precipitation and the water budget over the TRH region using the ERA5 global reanalysis and the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) Model. The WRF version employed in this study includes online calculations of the atmospheric water budget and an evapotranspiration (ET) tagging procedure to trace evapotranspired water in the atmosphere. Both ERA5 and WRF reproduce the spring precipitation increase. Moreover, WRFD02 (with a 3-km domain) reduces the wet bias by around 60% and 77% compared to WRFD01 (9 km) and ERA5 (30 km). Both ERA5 and WRF demonstrate that the increase of spring precipitation is dominated by moisture convergence, especially the atmospheric water fluxes from the southern boundary. The enhanced moisture inflow is sustained by enhanced mass flux while the enhanced moisture outflow is sustained by increased moisture. The ET-tagging results further demonstrate the weakened precipitation recycling process because of the significant increase of precipitation produced by external moisture. Compared to ERA5, the reduced wet bias with WRF is attributed to a better spatial resolution of orographic barrier effects, which reduce the southerly water fluxes. Numerical climate models have been upgraded by the improved description of terrestrial hydrological processes across different scales. The goal of this study is to explore the role of terrestrial hydrological processes on land–atmosphere interactions within the context of modeling uncertainties related to model physics parameterization. The models applied are the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model and its coupled hydrological modeling system WRF-Hydro, which depicts the lateral terrestrial hydrological processes and further allows their feedback to the atmosphere. We conducted convection-permitting simulations (3 km) over the Heihe River Basin in Northwest China for the period 2008–2010, and particularly focused on its upper reach area of complex high mountains. In order to account for the modeling uncertainties associated with model physics parameterization, an ensemble of simulations is generated by varying the planetary boundary layer (PBL) schemes. We embedded the fully three-dimensional atmospheric water tagging method in both WRF and WRF-Hydro for quantifying the strength of land–atmosphere interactions. The impact of PBL parameterization on land–atmosphere interactions is evaluated through its direct effect on vertical mixing. Results suggest that enabled lateral terrestrial flow in WRF-Hydro distinctly increases soil moisture and evapotranspiration near the surface in the high mountains, thereby modifies the atmospheric condition regardless of the applied PBL scheme. The local precipitation recycling ratio in the study area increases from 1.52 to 1.9% due to the description of lateral terrestrial flow, and such positive feedback processes are irrespective of the modeling variability caused by PBL parameterizations. This study highlights the non-negligible contribution of lateral terrestrial flow to local precipitation recycling, indicating the potential of the fully coupled modeling in land–atmosphere interactions research. Accurate global horizontal irradiance (GHI) forecasting is critical for integrating solar energy into the power grid and operating solar power plants. The Weather Research and Forecasting model with its solar radiation extension (WRF-Solar) has been used to forecast solar irradiance in different regions around the world. However, the application of the WRF-Solar model to the prediction of GHI in West Africa, particularly Ghana, has not yet been investigated. The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of the WRF-Solar model for predicting GHI in Ghana, focusing on three automatic weather stations (Akwatia, Kumasi and Kologo) for the year 2021. We used two one-way nested domains (D1 = 15 km and D2 = 3 km) to investigate the ability of the fully coupled WRF-Solar model to forecast GHI up to 72-hour ahead under different atmospheric conditions. The initial and lateral boundary conditions were taken from the ECMWF high-resolution operational forecasts. Our findings reveal that the WRF-Solar model performs better under clear skies than cloudy skies. Under clear skies, Kologo performed best in predicting 72-hour GHI, with a first day nRMSE of 9.62 %. However, forecasting GHI under cloudy skies at all three sites had significant uncertainties. Additionally, WRF-Solar model is able to reproduce the observed GHI diurnal cycle under high AOD conditions in most of the selected days. This study enhances the understanding of the WRF-Solar model's capabilities and limitations for GHI forecasting in West Africa, particularly in Ghana. A computationally efficient and inexpensive approach for using the capabilities of large-eddy simulations (LES) to model small-scale local weather phenomena is presented. The setup uses the LES capabilities of the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF-LES) on a single domain that is directly driven by reanalysis data as boundary conditions. The simulated area is an example for complex terrain, and the employed parameterizations are chosen in a way to represent realistic conditions during two 48-h periods while still keeping the required computing time around 105 CPU hours. We show by evaluating turbulence characteristics that the model results conform to results from typical LES. A comparison with ground-based remote sensing data from a triple Doppler-lidar setup, employed during the "ScaleX" campaigns, shows the grade of adherence of the results to the measured local weather conditions. The representation of mesoscale phenomena, including nocturnal low-level jets, strongly depends on the temporal and spatial resolution of the meteorological boundary conditions used to drive the model. Small-scale meteorological features that are induced by the terrain, such as katabatic flows, are present in the simulated output as well as in the measured data. This result shows that the four-dimensional output of WRF-LES simulations for a real area and real episode can be technically realized, allowing a more comprehensive and detailed view of the micrometeorological conditions than can be achieved with measurements alone. Numerical weather- and climate prediction models rely on soil data to accurately model land surface processes. However, as soil data are produced using soil profiles and maps with multiple sources of uncertainty, wide discrepancies prevail in global soil datasets. Comparison of four commonly used soil datasets in Earth system climate models, i.e., Food and Agriculture Organization soil data, Harmonized World Soil Database, Global Soil Dataset for Earth System Model, and global gridded soil information system SoilGrids, yields widespread differences in southern Africa. This study investigates the simulated land-atmosphere interactions in southern Africa in the context of the uncertainties from applying different global soil datasets. We conducted ensemble simulations using the fully coupled Weather Research and Forecasting Hydrological Modeling system (WRF-Hydro) incorporated with each of the global soil datasets mentioned above. Model simulations were performed at 4-km convection-permitting scale from January 2015 to June 2016. By quantifying model's internal variability and comparing the modeling results, results show that the simulated temperature, soil moisture, and surface energy fluxes are largely impacted by soil texture differences. For instance, changes in soil texture and associated hydrophysical parameters result in large differences in air temperature up to 1.7°C and surface heat flux up to 25 W/m2, and disparities in averaged surface soil moisture differ up to 0.1 m3/m3 in austral summer months. Differences in soil texture characteristics also regulate local climatic conditions differently in the wet and dry seasons as well as in different climatic regions. Furthermore, the thermodynamic differences in surface energy fluxes caused by soil texture demonstrate physical feedback perspective on atmospheric processes, resulting in distinct changes in planetary boundary layer height. This study demonstrates the non-negligible impact of soil data on land surface-atmosphere coupled modeling and highlights the need for consistent consideration of modeling uncertainties from soil data in modeling applications. • The spatiotemporal continuity of droughts was explored using a three-dimensional clustering algorithm. • Droughts can migrate hundreds of kilometers from the source sites in the agro-pastoral ecotone of northern China. • The more severe and longer duration of meteorological drought, the more likely it is to trigger agricultural drought. Understanding the spatiotemporal evolution of droughts is critical for food security and water allocation. In this study, we propose an approach to construct the linkage of the propagation from meteorological drought to agricultural drought to explore the simultaneous spatiotemporal evolution of droughts based on a 3-dimensional clustering algorithm. We first evaluate the improvement of the downscaled high-resolution outputs from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to reanalysis data in detecting wet-dry variations in the agro-pastoral ecotone of northern China (APENC). The WRF simulation results well characterize the evolution of droughts with a high correlation coefficient of 0.82 (p <0.05), which implies that the WRF downscaling model provides reliable hydrometeorological results for assessing and analyzing long-term wet-dry variations. Subsequently, we identify and track the spatiotemporal evolution of each individual drought event in the APENC for the first time. Based on the standardized precipitation index calculated from the WRF outputs, a total of 185 drought clusters were identified during 2000–2017, with 28 drought events lasting at least 3 months duration occurring in the APENC. The characteristics of the different drought events vary considerably. Droughts in the APENC have a larger percentage of propagation to the northeast and northwest and migrated hundreds of kilometers from the source sites. The results of the propagation of meteorological droughts to agricultural droughts indicate that 53.75% of the meteorological drought events progressed further to agricultural droughts. Agricultural droughts exhibit spatial variations consistent with meteorological droughts. Agricultural droughts have 1.69 months onset lag time, 2.12 months termination lag time, and overall longer duration than meteorological droughts in the APENC. The credibility of regional climate simulations over West Africa stands and falls with the ability to reproduce the West African monsoon (WAM) whose precipitation plays a pivotal role for people's livelihood. In this study, we simulate the WAM for the wet year 1999 with a 27-member multi-physics ensemble of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. We investigate the inter-member differences in a process-based manner in order to extract generalizable information on the behavior of the tested cumulus (CU), microphysics (MP), and planetary boundary layer (PBL) schemes. Precipitation, temperature and atmospheric dynamics are analyzed in comparison to the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) rainfall estimates, the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC) gridded gauge-analysis, the Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN) gridded temperature product and the forcing data (ERA-Interim) to explore interdependencies of processes leading to a certain WAM regime. We find that MP and PBL schemes contribute most to the ensemble spread (147 mm month) for monsoon precipitation over the study region. Furthermore, PBL schemes have a strong influence on the movement of the WAM rainband because of their impact on the cloud fraction, that ranges from 8 to 20 % at 600 hPa during August. More low- and mid-level clouds result in less incoming radiation and a weaker monsoon. Ultimately, we identify the differing intensities of the moist Hadley-type meridional circulation that connects the monsoon winds to the Tropical Easterly Jet as the main source for inter-member differences. The ensemble spread of Sahel precipitation and associated dynamics for August 1999 is comparable to the observed inter-annual spread (1979-2010) between dry and wet years, emphasizing the strong potential impact of regional processes and the need for a careful selection of model parameterizations. Intense precipitation events frequently occur in the Hanjiang River Basin (HRB) in China, causing major economic losses and affecting human security. Accurate precipitation simulations are sensitive to the choice of physical schemes in numerical weather prediction models. Therefore, in this study the performance of the different combinations of physical schemes in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model was investigated for the HRB. Five intense precipitation events in summer during the period 2008–2011 were selected. For simulating each intense precipitation event, an 18-member multi-physics ensemble was designed by using three cumulus (CU) schemes and four microphysics (MP) schemes. The temporal dynamics and spatial patterns of the simulated precipitation were evaluated systematically by a comparison to the China precipitation analysis reference data. A quantitative analysis using the Euclidean distance metric to synthesize the evaluation results was performed. The performed uncertainty analysis suggests that the skill of precipitation simulation is more sensitive to the choice of the CU scheme and less sensitive to the choice of the MP scheme. Our analysis shows that a suitable WRF physical configuration consists of Kain-Fritsch and WRF Single-Moment 6-class, which reaches a performance similar to that of the ensemble mean method. To our knowledge, this multi-physics ensemble study is the first effort to comprehensively evaluate the applicability of the WRF model to intense precipitation simulations over the HRB. Mountain regions with complex orography are a particular challenge for regional climate simulations. High spatial resolution is required to account for the high spatial variability in meteorological conditions. This study presents a very high-resolution regional climate simulation (5 km) using the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) for the central part of Europe including the Alps. Global boundaries are dynamically downscaled for the historical period 1980–2009 (ERA-Interim and MPI-ESM), and for the near future period 2020–2049 (MPI-ESM, scenario RCP4.5). Model results are compared to gridded observation datasets and to data from a dense meteorological station network in the Berchtesgaden Alps (Germany). Averaged for the Alps, the mean bias in temperature is about −0.3 °C, whereas precipitation is overestimated by +14% to +19%. R 2 values for hourly, daily and monthly temperature range between 0.71 and 0.99. Temporal precipitation dynamics are well reproduced at daily and monthly scales (R 2 between 0.36 and 0.85), but are not well captured at hourly scale. The spatial patterns, seasonal distributions, and elevation-dependencies of the climate change signals are investigated. Mean warming in Central Europe exhibits a temperature increase between 0.44 °C and 1.59 °C and is strongest in winter and spring. An elevation-dependent warming is found for different specific regions and seasons, but is absent in others. Annual precipitation changes between −4% and +25% in Central Europe. The change signals for humidity, wind speed, and incoming short-wave radiation are small, but they show distinct spatial and elevation-dependent patterns. On large-scale spatial and temporal averages, the presented 5 km RCM setup has in general similar biases as EURO-CORDEX simulations, but it shows very good model performance at the regional and local scale for daily meteorology, and, apart from wind-speed and precipitation, even for hourly values. Water resources management requires an accurate knowledge of the behavior of the regional hydrological cycle components, including precipitation, evapotranspiration, river discharge and soil water storage. Atmospheric models such as the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model provide a tool to evaluate these components. Recent model developments have focused on coupled atmospheric-hydrological modeling systems, such as WRF-Hydro, in order to account for subsurface, overland and river flow and potentially improve the representation of land-atmosphere interactions. The aim of this study is to investigate the contribution of lateral terrestrial water flow to the regional hydrological cycle, with the help of a joint soil-atmospheric moisture tagging procedure newly developed in the so-called WRF-tag and WRF-Hydro-tag models. An application of both models for the high precipitation event on 15 August 2008 in the German and Austrian parts of the Danube river basin (94,100 km2) is presented. The precipitation having fallen in the basin during this event is considered as a moisture source, is tagged and tracked for a 40 month-period until December 2011. At the end of the study period, in both simulations, approximately 57% of the tagged moisture has run off, while 41% has evaporated back to the atmosphere, including 2% that has recycled in the Danube river basin as precipitation. In WRF-Hydro-tag, the surface evaporation of tagged moisture is slightly enhanced by surface flow infiltration, and slightly reduced by subsurface lateral water flow in areas with low topography gradients. It is expected that global climate change will increase the probability of extreme hydrometeorological events like droughts and floods. In order to adapt to this changing climate and to maintain basic water-, power-, and food supply, especially water-scarse regions require reliable knowledge about the available freshwater resources and potential extreme events during the next season. However, the headwaters of semi-arid catchments are often characterized by complex terrain and strong topographic gradients. To predict seasonal extreme events in such regions, hydrological models require high-resolution forecasts of precipitation and temperature. A 35 km horizontal resolution of the latest global seasonal forecast products is not suited for regional hydrological applications in such catchments. Therefore, it is mandatory to improve the spatial resolution of the hydrometeorological information to better represent the regional conditions in river basins with complex terrain. In particular, if such information is used as driving data in a one-way coupled model chain with subsequent hydrological models, a high-resolution and high-quality meteorological input is a key factor.In this study, we demonstrate the concept of achieving this improved and regionalized meteorological input. For eight river basins in semi-arid regions like Iran, Brazil, Sudan, and West-Africa, we perform a dynamical downscaling of the global atmospheric fields with the use of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The best possible regionalization of the global fields is identified by testing up to 32 parameterization combinations of the WRF model for different representations of subgrid-scale convection, cloud microphysics, radiation physics and boundary layer physics for each individual region. For these configuration runs we use ERA-Interim re-analyses which also serve as the initialization for the latest seasonal predictions of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF SEAS5) re-forecasts. Five consecutive years for each of the 32 parameterization combinations are simulated and their performance is analyzed with the use of local station data for identifying an optimized model setup for each region. Preliminary results already indicate that this identified configuration does not only depend on the performance of the modeled meteorological information, but also on the required computation time that strongly differs between the individual configurations. With this optimized WRF setup for each region, we finally downscale the global SEAS5 forecasts and thereby provide the regionalized input for the subsequent hydrological model systems. Our study is the first step towards an one-way coupled model chain that finally allows to provide high-resolution hydrometeorological and hydrological forecasts for the next season. In the end, this derived information has the potential to significantly improve the regional water management, especially in semi-arid regions and in the context of extreme events like e.g. droughts. Understanding, modeling, and predicting hydrometeorological extreme events are major topics in geoscience. But since, in particular, extreme events depend on various factors and hydrometeorological parameters as well as their interactions and feedbacks, it is crucial to analyze and understand their spatial and temporal dependencies. However, simple metrics like spatial correlation coefficients only consider the linear relationship between variables and therefore neglect significant non-linear dependencies. Therefore, we propose Copula-based dependency-metrics, with which we can analyze the full dependency structure of variables, including the statistical relationship of extreme events. In this study, we use the proposed approach for analyzing the spatial dependency structures of atmospheric wet refractivity, which is a key parameter in GNSS-tomography and hence the reconstruction of a local tropospheric model. Therefore, the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model has been applied, with which high-resolution fields of atmospheric pressure, temperature and water vapor were simulated. We used the model results for deriving pixel-based wet refractivities on multiple pressure levels in high spatial and temporal resolution. The model was run with a spatial resolution of 3km for a domain in Central Europe during the period April to October 2016. The dynamic patterns and spatial correlations of pixel-based hourly wet refractivity on different pressure levels were then evaluated using several Copula-based dependency measures. While we currently focus on the analysis of wet refractivity, the dependency measures can be easily applied to other hydrometeorological quantities and therefore provide an innovative approach for analyzing spatial correlations including the spatial dependencies of extreme events. In our presentation, we show the different steps for deriving the dependency measures as well as first results which show the advantages compared to classical correlation-based analyses.
