Plant-wide oscillation detection is an important task in the maintenance of large-scale industrial control systems, owing to the fact that in an interactive multi-loop environment oscillation generated in one loop may propagate to the different parts of the plant. In such a scenario, it is required that different loops oscillating due to a common cause and hence similar frequency may be grouped together. In this paper an adaptive method for plant-wide oscillation detection based on multivariate empirical mode decomposition (MEMD) along with a grouping algorithm is proposed. The method can identify multiple oscillation groups among different variables as well as variables with random noise only. The proposed method is also applicable to both non-linear and non-stationary time series where the techniques based on the conventional Fourier analysis are prone to errors. Within each group that oscillate due to a common cause, the method can also indicate the location of the probable root cause of oscillations. The block inverse iteration and block Newton’s methods proposed by the authors of this paper for computing invariant pairs of regular linear matrix pencils are generalized to the case of regular nonlinear matrix pencils. This paper is a review of the use of particulate discrete element modeling (DEM) in geomechanics. The overall objective of the paper is to serve as an introduction to researchers and practitioners in geomechanics who are considering adopting DEM in their work or using the results of DEM simulations to guide other studies, for example, the development of constitutive models for continuum-based numerical analysis. It is hoped that prior converts to the use of DEM will also benefit from a relatively objective overview of current DEM use in geomechanics. The introductory sections present the background to the method and give an overview of the evolution of the use of particulate DEM in recent geotechnical research. The general principals of the algorithm are then presented, considering the types of particles typically used, the calculation of contact forces, and formulation of simulation boundary conditions. Some techniques available to interpret and postprocess of DEM results and provide the information to link the particle scale and overall response are outlined. Approaches used to validate and calibrate DEM models to verify that DEM simulation results representative of physical reality are discussed. An overview of the application of DEM modeling to field-scale problems is then presented. gggggAssume that an n × n dot matrix is stored in consecutive n words of a computer with one word being n bit. This paper discusses eight operations to rotate or transpose the dot matrix in horizontal/vertical! slant direction. As is well known, such operations form a group. This paper presents a unified description of the algorithms, and it is shown that all eight algorithms can be derived by suit- ably setting the constants in the unified algorithm. Then it is shown that the algorithms can be transformed to each other by simple transformation rules for the constants, and those transformation rules are shown to form a group. The foregoing algorithms for the dot matrix are not unique, and there can be different descriptions for the algorithm producing the same result. Consequently, there can be various versions of the eight algorithms as well as versions of transformation rules. Abstract: We revisit in this paper the theory of axisymmetric vortex rings in an ideal fluid. The boundary separating the vortex ring from the external (potential) flow is assumed of elliptic shape. For a given distribution of vorticity in the vortex core, we theoretically put into evidence the critical parameter for the existence of non-trivial solutions, thus confirming the numerical observation of Durst et al. [ZAMP 32 (1981) 156]. A sharp estimation of the critical threshold is analytically derived. Theoretical predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations using finite elements. A new numerical algorithm is presented and shown to display better performances compared to previous published algorithms using finite differences. The convergence of the iterative algorithm is proved using the theory of elliptic partial differential equations with discontinuous nonlinearities. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A discrete element code with impact model has been developed and calibrated to simulate the dynamic behavior of rock materials, with special regard to rock fragmentation upon impact during rock-fall analysis. The paper summarizes the discrete element code, the calibration algorithms developed to identify the model microparameters, and the impact model. Experimental work on drop tests is then used to validate the code on modeling impact fragmentation. It has been found that the developed discrete element code and impact model can reasonably simulate rock fragmentation in drop tests. A family of the block matching 3-D (BM3D) algorithms for various imaging problems has been recently proposed within the framework of nonlocal patchwise image modeling refid="ref1"/, refid="ref2"/. In this paper, we construct analysis and synthesis frames, formalizing BM3D image modeling, and use these frames to develop novel iterative deblurring algorithms. We consider two different formulations of the deblurring problem, i.e., one given by the minimization of the single-objective function and another based on the generalized Nash equilibrium (GNE) balance of two objective functions. The latter results in the algorithm where deblurring and denoising operations are decoupled. The convergence of the developed algorithms is proved. Simulation experiments show that the decoupled algorithm derived from the GNE formulation demonstrates the best numerical and visual results and shows superiority with respect to the state of the art in the field, confirming a valuable potential of BM3D-frames as an advanced image modeling tool. This paper explores the use of kurtosis in synchronizing with a QPSK burst transmission. The start and end of the burst are a priori unknown and are detected without the use of pilot signals. After frame level synchronization, signal level synchronization is performed. The symbol timing, carrier frequency and carrier phase are recovered without the assistance of known symbols or synchronization words in the data stream, i.e. totally blind synchronization. Abstract: Phase control may substantially increase the power absorption in point-absorber wave energy converters. This study deals with validation of dynamic models and latching control algorithms for an oscillating water column (OWC) inside a fixed vertical tube of small circular cross-section by small-scale testing. The paper describes experimental and numerical results for the system''s dynamics, using simple and practical latching control techniques that do not require the prediction of waves or wave forces, and which will be relevant to any type of point-absorbing devices. In the experimental set-up, the upper end of the tube was equipped with an outlet duct and a shut-off valve, which could be controlled to give a latching of the inner free surface movement. The pressure drop through the open valve is used as a simplified measure of the energy extraction. The control was realized by using the real-time measurement signals for the inner and outer surface displacement. A mathematical model of the system was established and applied in numerical simulation. In the case the OWC''s diameter is much smaller than the wavelength and the wave amplitude much smaller than the draft, the free surface movement inside the tube can be described as an oscillating weightless piston. For this hydrodynamic problem an analytical solution is known. In addition, the mathematical model includes the effects of viscous flow losses, the air compressibility inside the chamber and the pressure drop across the valve. Experimental results were used to calibrate some of the model parameters, and the total model was formulated as a coupled system of six non-linear, first-order differential equations. Time-domain integration was used to simulate the system in order to test the control strategies and compare with experimental results. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract-Subspace-based estimation of multiple real-valued sine wave frequencies is considered in this paper. A novel data covariance model is proposed. In the proposed model, the dimension of the signal subspace equals the number of frequencies present in the data, which is half of the signal. subspace dimension for the conventional model. Consequently, an ESPRIT-like algorithm using the proposed data model is presented. The proposed algorithm is then extended for the case of complex-valued sine waves. Performance analysis of the proposed algorithms are also carried out. The algorithms are tested in numerical simulations. When compared with ESPRIT, the newly proposed algorithm results in a significant reduction in computational burden without any compromise in the accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
