In recent times, video inpainting techniques have intended to fill the missing areas or gaps in a video by utilizing known pixels. The variety in brightness or difference of the patches causes the state-of-the-art video inpainting techniques to exhibit high computation complexity and create seams in the target areas. To resolve these issues, this paper introduces a novel video inpainting technique that employs the Morphological Haar Wavelet Transform combined with the Krill Herd based Criminisi algorithm (MHWT-KHCA) to address the challenges of high computational demand and visible seam artifacts in current inpainting practices. The proposed MHWT-KHCA algorithm strategically reduces computation times and enhances the seamlessness of the inpainting process in videos. Through a series of experiments, the technique is validated against standard metrics such as peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity index (SSIM), where it demonstrates superior performance compared to existing methods. Additionally, the paper outlines potential real-world applications ranging from video restoration to real-time surveillance enhancement, highlighting the technique's versatility and effectiveness. Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a critical problem for cattle populations, affecting both individual cows and the entire herd. Given cattle's critical role in meeting human needs, effective management of this disease is essential to prevent significant losses. The study proposes a deep learning approach using the MobileNetV2 model and the RMSprop optimizer to address this challenge. Tests on a dataset of healthy and lumpy cattle images show an impressive accuracy of 95%, outperforming existing benchmarks by 4–10%. These results underline the potential of the proposed methodology to revolutionize the diagnosis and management of skin diseases in cattle farming. Simple Summary: In recent years, the interest in virtual fencing systems for flexible animal enclosure management has increased. However, implementing such systems requires significant investment due to the need for individual collars, hindering large-scale adoption. This study examines the spatial distribution of a cow herd using GPS locations from the Nofence© system, aiming to minimize the number of collars required by identifying patterns in positions and ranks to derive a hierarchy. Contrary to expectations, no distinct pattern emerged, suggesting future studies should focus on individual interactions rather than viewing the herd as a single unit. Interest in virtual fencing has increased due to its flexibility for agriculture and rewilding. However, systems like Nofence© require large financial investments, and the need for individual collars complicates large-scale use. If cattle herds maintain cohesive groups around leading individuals, fewer collars could be used, thereby enhancing cost efficiency. This study investigates the pattern in spatial distribution in a herd of 17 Angus cows on Fanø in Denmark with GPS locations, using a Nofence© system. The aim of this paper is to determine how individuals position themselves in a herd, spatially, and identify a pattern in ranks. The method used in this study examines the distances between an individual to the rest of the herdmates using nearest neighbour and descriptive statistics. Contrary to expectations, this study did not reveal a distinct pattern in herd distribution. While some tendencies in spatial distribution patterns were observed, only a low concordance could be found ( W = 0.15 , p < 0.001 ), indicating great variability in the cattle's ranks. A cumulative curve of the ranks estimated over the entire periods, however, allowed a rough estimation of the hierarchy and allowed identification of the highest-ranked cows, making the use of a cumulative curve a possible solution to finding the high-ranked cows. This research underscores the complexity of cattle social structures and highlights the need for extended observation periods and alternative methodologies to enhance the cost-effectiveness and scalability of virtual fencing in agricultural and rewilding contexts. The paper explores how beneficiaries of South Africa's land reform programme attempt to navigate the contradictory dynamics of production and social reproduction in collectively owned agricultural enterprises. The Mphuzanyoni Communal Property Association in KwaZulu‐Natal province farms with commercial beef herds and the Mayime Cooperative in the Eastern Cape province is engaged in a joint venture dairy farming scheme in partnership with an agribusiness firm. Severe tensions are evident between the social reproduction of households and the requirements of simple or expanded reproduction of agricultural enterprises. Bernstein's concept of competing 'funds' is used to examine struggles over production and reproduction on the farms, in which members of socially differentiated households contest divergent visions for the collective enterprises. Conflicts centre on how labour and capital should be mobilised, how income and other benefits in kind should be distributed to households and whether or not income should be invested for purposes of simple or expanded reproduction of the enterprise. Context: Managing people outside the farm family unit is a new issue for many Irish dairy farmers. In the context of rapid growth, the demand for employees has increased, creating the need for Irish dairy farmers to have human resource management (HRM) skills. Aims: This paper explores the extent and type of HRM practices adopted by Irish dairy farmers and the factors that influence their adoption. Methods: A questionnaire was developed, piloted, and issued to farmers on the basis of herd size and location. Data from 203 dairy farmers who employ people were analysed to examine the adoption of different HRM practices and the influence of farm characteristics, farmer demographics and farmer attitudes on their adoption. HRM practices included compliance with employment legislation, health and safety, different approaches to recruitment, workforce management and retention. The questionnaire included one or more variables for each of these HRM practices. Where more than one variable was included, an aggregate variable was developed for that practice. Key results: Whereas, overall, there was a low level of adoption of best HRM practices, farm characteristics such as herd size and number of employees had a significant influence on farmers' adoption of compliance with employment legislation, health and safety, recruitment, workforce management and retention practices. Demographic factors such as age, level of education, and average hours worked influenced farmers compliance with employment law legislation, workforce management practices and retention practices. Conclusions: The study highlighted an overall low compliance with employment legislation and low adoption of best practices in managing staff among dairy farmers in Ireland. Implications: This study highlighted that improvement is needed in all areas of HRM on Irish dairy farms. The findings of this study would be useful to farm advisors who support dairy farmers in improving their management of their businesses. Overall, this study has contributed to a greater understanding of the challenges in managing people in agriculture and how certain factors influences the adoption of HRM practices on dairy farms. The dairy industry's recent growth in Ireland has resulted in a high demand for additional workers, increasing the requirement for farmers to be skilled in Human Resource Management (HRM). This study identified that the adoption of HRM practices is influenced by farm characteristics, in particular herd size, the number of employees on the farm. This study has contributed insights into the prevalence of specific HRM practices on Irish dairy farms, and indicated that there is a significant scope for improvement. A novel aspect of this study was the focus on the potential factors that influence the adoption of HRM practices on Irish dairy farms. The most common life-threatening disease, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), can be lethal within a few weeks if untreated. The early detection and analysis of leukemia is a key dilemma in the field of disease diagnosis, and the methods available for the classification process are time-consuming. To overcome the issues, this paper develops a robust classification technique named Horse Herd Whale Optimization-enabled Deep Neuro-Fuzzy Network (HHWO-enabled DNFN method) for ALL classification and severity analysis using the MapReduce framework. The input image is first preprocessed and segmented, and the useful features necessary for improving the classification performance are extracted during the mapper phase, known as HHWO, which incorporates Horse Herd Optimization Algorithm (HOA) and Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA). Finally, severity analysis of ALL is done to classify the levels of leukemia to offer optimal treatment. As a result, the developed method performed better than other existing methods, achieving superior performance with a greater testing accuracy of 0.959, sensitivity of 0.965, and specificity of 0.966, respectively. Since the implementation of herding in the Neolithic period, specialized areas for livestock activities have emerged in the Western Mediterranean region, such as some caves and shelters, which were systematically used for the stabling of herds. By definition, this type of sites has a great potential for the study of the beginning of livestock practices and offer high-resolution information on the exploitation and management of herds. Different disciplines analyze these activities through the analysis of faunal, archaeobotanical or sedimentological remains from these sites. In this paper, we offer a state of the art on the contribution to the study of early husbandry practices of zooarchaeological studies of faunal assemblages from sheepfold caves. Simple Summary: Spontaneous humeral fractures in first- and second-lactation dairy cows are recognized as a serious welfare problem in New Zealand. However, the condition is sporadic, which means that simple epidemiological descriptions and estimates of the extent of the problem are lacking. By combining the data from four independent studies using a multi-method approach, we found that their occurrence is more common than previously thought, with potentially up to 12% of farms and 4,620 dairy cattle affected in the 2013/2014 lactation season. Furthermore, the condition exclusively affects first- and second-lactation spring calving dairy cows, up to 4 months post-partum, and may affect multiple animals on the same farm, in the same season, and over multiple seasons, which are not always consecutive. We suggest that the evidence presented in this paper places an urgent requirement on the New Zealand dairy industry to undertake prompt action to understand the determinants of this epidemic. A multi-method approach integrating data from four independent sources was used to describe some key features of the epidemiology and estimate the herd and within-herd incidence of fractured humeri in New Zealand dairy cattle for the period 2007–2015. The first dataset was from a national case series where cases of humeral fractures in dairy cattle were identified by veterinarians across New Zealand between the 2007/2008 and 2011/2012 lactation seasons. The second dataset was from a pet food company based in the Waikato region, which collated the number of casualty first- and second-lactation cows found to have a fractured humerus post-slaughter in the 2014/2015 lactation season, and the third dataset was a case series conducted by veterinarians employed in a Waikato veterinary business, also from the 2014/2015 lactation season. For the final dataset, 505 randomly selected New Zealand dairy farmers completed a phone survey on the incidence of non-responsive, non-weight-bearing forelimb lameness in first- and second-lactation cows in the 2014/2015 lactation season. Using the telephone survey results, the within-herd and herd-level incidence of cases for first- and second-lactation dairy animals was calculated. The national case series reported 149 cases of humeral fractures in 22 dairy herds; the pet food case series identified 61 cases from 41 farms; and the practice-based case series found 14 cases from 10 farms. Humeral fractures exclusively affected first- and second-lactation dairy cows and had a peak incidence between calving and early mating. The national telephone survey found that non-weight-bearing forelimb lameness requiring euthanasia of first- or second-lactation cows occurred in 11.7% of herds, with a mean within-herd incidence of 2.6% for first lactation cows and 2.8% for second-lactation cows for affected herds. These combined datasets demonstrate that humeral fractures in young, lactating dairy cattle are more common than previously suspected and that they occur nationally and over multiple years on some farms. Simple Summary: Dairy cow behavior detection is of great significance for cattle health management. Through the detection of the four behaviors of dairy cows—standing, lying, eating, and drinking—we can gain valuable insights into the well-being of cows. For example, hoof disease can increase the amount of time a cow lies down, and digestive system issues can cause a decrease in food intake. Visual inspection of cow behavior can keep track of changes in cow behavior, and non-invasive detection can reduce cow discomfort and improve animal welfare. In this study, we employed computer vision-based deep learning techniques for the detection of cow behavior, and experimental results demonstrated its promising application in real farm settings. Dairy cow behavior carries important health information. Timely and accurate detection of behaviors such as drinking, feeding, lying, and standing is meaningful for monitoring individual cows and herd management. In this study, a model called Res-DenseYOLO is proposed for accurately detecting the individual behavior of dairy cows living in cowsheds. Specifically, a dense module was integrated into the backbone network of YOLOv5 to strengthen feature extraction for actual cowshed environments. A CoordAtt attention mechanism and SioU loss function were added to enhance feature learning and training convergence. Multi-scale detection heads were designed to improve small target detection. The model was trained and tested on 5516 images collected from monitoring videos of a dairy cowshed. The experimental results showed that the performance of Res-DenseYOLO proposed in this paper is better than that of Fast-RCNN, SSD, YOLOv4, YOLOv7, and other detection models in terms of precision, recall, and mAP metrics. Specifically, Res-DenseYOLO achieved 94.7% precision, 91.2% recall, and 96.3% mAP, outperforming the baseline YOLOv5 model by 0.7%, 4.2%, and 3.7%, respectively. This research developed a useful solution for real-time and accurate detection of dairy cow behaviors with video monitoring only, providing valuable behavioral data for animal welfare and production management. The return of wolves to Swiss mountains and the damage they cause to sheep and goat herds in the region have raised concerns about a consequent wave of farm closures. In this paper, we examine the relationship between wolf attacks and the decline of Alpine summer farms, a specific high‐altitude farm type. We collected farm structure data and monitoring data on wolf attacks between 2004 and 2021 and analysed them using a causal random forest method, enabling a detailed analysis of the relation between wolf attacks and the number of different types of Alpine summer farms at a regional level. The results show that the farming systems are unaffected by incidental and infrequent wolf attacks, but that a high number of wolf attacks in a region is related to faster decrease in number of grazing systems where sheep are most vulnerable to such attacks. This paper introduces an approach to the automated measurement and analysis of dairy cows using 3D point cloud technology. The integration of advanced sensing techniques enables the collection of non-intrusive, precise data, facilitating comprehensive monitoring of key parameters related to the health, well-being, and productivity of dairy cows. The proposed system employs 3D imaging sensors to capture detailed information about various parts of dairy cows, generating accurate, high-resolution point clouds. A robust automated algorithm has been developed to process these point clouds and extract relevant metrics such as dairy cow stature height, rump width, rump angle, and front teat length. Based on the measured data combined with expert assessments of dairy cows, the quality indices of dairy cows are automatically evaluated and extracted. By leveraging this technology, dairy farmers can gain real-time insights into the health status of individual cows and the overall herd. Additionally, the automated analysis facilitates efficient management practices and optimizes feeding strategies and resource allocation. The results of field trials and validation studies demonstrate the effectiveness and reliability of the automated 3D point cloud approach in dairy farm environments. The errors between manually measured values of dairy cow height, rump angle, and front teat length, and those calculated by the auto-measurement algorithm were within 0.7 cm, with no observed exceedance of errors in comparison to manual measurements. Simple Summary: The authors' aim was to summarise the general concept and approach of the Hungarian National PRRS Eradication Program. However, limits on the length of the paper meant that many important points of the process could not be described in full detail. In some cases, previous publications were cited to guide the readers to a more detailed description of particular eradication parts. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is a widespread infectious disease that is currently a major cause of economic losses in pig production. In Hungary, a National PRRS Eradication Program has been introduced to attain a more efficient, economic, and competitive international market position. The program has been also approved by the EU, but the resulting legal obligations have imposed a burden on Hungarian producers to comply with EU competition rules. The implementation of the program has been carried out by the veterinary authorities with the consent of, continuous support from and monitoring conducted by organisations within the pig sector as well as a scientific committee. The PRRS eradication program in Hungary was based on a regional territorial principle and was compulsory for all pig holdings within the regions. In Hungary, large fattening farms operate as all-in/all-out or continuous flow systems. Large-scale breeding herds are predominantly farrow-to-finish types. Although its significance has decreased in recent decades, 20% of the Hungarian pig population is still kept on small (backyard) farms (<100 animals). All PRRSV-infected large-scale farms had to develop a unit-adapted eradication plan, including external and internal biosecurity measures, vaccinations, etc. It was crucial to render each fattening unit free of the disease, as fattening units play a significant role in spreading the virus within the country. The eradication efforts mainly implemented were depopulation–repopulation methods, but on some farms a testing and removal method has been used. As the eradication progressed over the years, the introduction of infected fattening pigs was restricted. Thanks to these measures, Hungarian large-scale fattening farms became PRRSV-free by the end of 2018. The PRRSV-free status of small-scale herds was achieved by the end of 2015 and was maintained between 2016 and 2021. By 31 December 2021, all breeding pigs in large-scale farms in Hungary were free of wild-type PRRS virus. By 31 March 2022, the total pig population of the country, including all backyard farms and fattening units, achieved PRRSV-free status. The future goal is to ensure and maintain the PRRSV-free status of Hungary via strict import regulations of live animals combined with the continuous and thorough screening of incoming and resident herds for the presence of the virus. A population-based epidemiological study was conducted between 2007 and 2011 and involved 78 northern Australian commercial beef-breeding herds and in excess of 56 000 cattle concurrently monitored. Cow reproductive performance was described from the biannual assessment of fetal age and lactation status. Both novel and well established measures of performance were used within four broad country types and included the following: percentage of lactating cows pregnant within 4 months of calving; percentage of cows pregnant within an approximate 12-month reproductive cycle (annual pregnancy); fetal and calf loss between confirmed pregnancy and weaning; percentage of cows contributing a calf at weaning and percentage of non-pregnant females retained for re-mating. The results from the present study described the variation in reproductive performance of commercial beef herds across northern Australia and defined typical and achievable levels of performance. The results from the study suggest that a weaning rate of 66% is a more realistic target level of performance for the Northern Forest, while weaning rates of at least 75–80% are realistic for other country types. Female-cattle performance was much lower in the Northern Forest than in the other country types. In absolute terms, there were 15–20% fewer surviving mated cows contributing a calf at weaning in an annual production year and ~4% more missing pregnant cows, which was associated with the ~20% higher retention of non-pregnant cows for re-mating. The reproductive performance of herds varied substantially among and within country types, with a 20–30% variation in reproduction rates and 5–15% variation in fetal and calf loss for half of the herds in all regions. Further analyses were performed and identified the major causes of this variation and are reported in subsequent papers within this series. The results from the present study appear to suggest that substantial opportunities to increase the reproductive performance of northern beef herds exist, providing that the causes of this variation are able to be identified and alleviated. Data concerning the practices and policies of collaborating properties for nutritional, breeding and health management of herds were captured by survey of herd owners/managers (n = 78) at the commencement of a large observational study conducted across northern Australia to identify and quantify the effect of major animal-, management group- and property-level risk factors on measures of reproductive performance. The cooperating herds in this study were considered to be broadly representative of north Australian beef breeding enterprises in terms of geography, size and ownership. Using four broad regional categories, this paper presents descriptive summaries of the management practices and nutritional conditions of cooperating herds in what was known as the Cash Cow project. Property sizes were largest within the Northern Downs and Northern Forest, and smallest within the Southern Forest. The expected average annual growth of yearling steers was >50 kg less in the Northern Forest, compared with the other country types, which also appeared to be associated with the identified production system and turnoff animal. Despite the exacerbated nutrition and environmental challenges and likely increased time required for new managers within the Northern Forest to attain an in depth understanding of the cattle and property dynamics, this region had the greatest incidence of management changes. The nutritional information summarised in this study highlights that available phosphorus during the wet season, as indicated by faecal levels in proportion to dietary energy, was likely to limit animal production within the Northern Downs and Northern Forest. During the dry season, pasture digestibilty and protein levels were likely to be approaching maintenance for cows on ~50% of properties in each country type and that responses to rumen degradable protein were also likely on 50% of properties. Despite this finding, low use of dry season supplements was observed for the Northern Downs, which was partially explained by the high incidence of the management systems based on segregating cows on lactation status and pregnancy. In all country types, the ratio of bulls to cows was higher than the 2.5% recommended for extensively managed situations, while limited use of vaccines to control infectious causes of reproductive loss was also observed. The major conclusion of this study is that there was marked variation in the adaption of interventions to specific businesses, indicating considerable opportunity exists for further adaptation in the region. The health of herds that are not within the official Brucellosis control program in the province of Azuay is unknown, and there may be areas with a higher frequency of seropositive herds. This paper aims to determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with bovine brucellosis in dairy farms. An epidemiological study was carried out in 436 farms, for which milk samples were taken from producers in collection centers, collecting trucks and herds. A georeferenced survey was used to collect information on the management of the herds. The milk was analyzed by indirect-ELISA, and thirty-seven farms were seropositive, obtaining a prevalence of 8,5%. The percentages of seropositivity were: Cuenca (14.84%), Girón (23.07%), Nabón (8.21%), Oña (11.53%), San Fernando (33.33%), Sevilla de Oro (7.14%), Sigsig (4.16%). The Rose Bengal and competitive ELISA tests were performed on bovines that contributed to the milk pool in 34 herds, establishing a 100%concordance of indirect ELISA to detect seronegative farms. In the logistic regression analysis, a significant association (P < 0;05) was determined between seropositivity and factors such as: geographic location, extension of the farm, exploitation system, presence of other domestic species, elimination of placental remains, reproduction system, having a higher probability of seropositivity in herds that presented abortions (OR = 2;71), estrus problems (OR = 2;09), birth of weak calves (OR = 3;24) and extensive management (OR = 3;67). Context: A significant opportunity remains to further increase the supply of premium sheepmeat products to Australia's customers, which requires a more rapid rebuilding of the national sheep flock. To help meet this challenge, developing relevant information for sheep producers to assist them to achieve a profitable flock-rebuilding outcome is viewed as highly desirable. Aims: (1) Develop flock-rebuild scenarios that track inventory, cashflow, profit and loss, and the overall balance sheet over a 5-year projection. (2) Model the impact on flock-rebuilding pathways of exposure to variation in supplementary-feed costs, purchase of stock and price received for sale animals and flock structure. (3) Model variation in benefits and costs for a range of production zones, enterprise types and flock-age profiles. Methods: Fourteen flock-rebuilding pathways were assessed for up to nine flock types, using a spreadsheet model that tracked inventory, cashflow, profit and loss, and the overall balance sheet over 5 years. Key results: The top four pathways for profitability and capacity to rapidly rebuild flock numbers include retention of more older ewes, purchasing young ewes, purchasing older ewes (mostly 5–6-year olds) in Merino and Merino-cross flock types only and joining ewe lambs in Maternal and Cleanskin flock types only. These pathways were not sensitive to variation in the cost of supplementary feed, stock prices or flock structure, although joining Merino ewe lambs became one of the top four pathways when feed costs were lower. Conclusions and implications: The well established practices of retaining ewes for longer and purchasing ewes, especially young ewes, have the most potential to both rapidly and profitably rebuild flock numbers. However, joining ewe lambs, particularly in Maternal and Cleanskin flocks, can also profitably contribute to rapid flock rebuilding. While reducing reproductive wastage or increasing reproductive potential were mostly profitable, they could not rapidly rebuild flock numbers. In contrast, accelerated lambing systems can rapidly rebuild flock numbers, but are only marginally profitable. The outlook for Australia's sheepmeat industry is very positive, with a significant opportunity available to further increase the supply of premium sheepmeat products to customers, by more rapidly rebuilding the national flock. This paper presents the findings of a study focussed on providing the confidence and material to sheep producers to choose optimal pathways to rebuild their flocks. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) enable communication among sensor nodes and require efficient energy management for optimal operation under various conditions. Key challenges include maximizing network lifetime, coverage area, and effective data aggregation and planning. A longer network lifetime contributes to improved data transfer durability, sensor conservation, and scalability. In this paper, an enhanced dual-selection krill herd (KH) optimization clustering scheme for resource-efficient WSNs with minimal overhead is introduced. The proposed approach increases overall energy utilization and reduces inter-node communication, addressing energy conservation challenges in node deployment and clustering for WSNs as optimization problems. A dynamic layering mechanism is employed to prevent repetitive selection of the same cluster head nodes, ensuring effective dual selection. Our algorithm is designed to identify the optimal solution through enhanced exploitation and exploration processes, leveraging a modified krill-based clustering method. Comparative analysis with benchmark approaches demonstrates that the proposed model enhances network lifetime by 23.21%, increases stable energy by 19.84%, and reduces network latency by 22.88%, offering a more efficient and reliable solution for WSN energy management. The aim of the paper was to study the lifespan dependence of Ukrainian Red-and-White dairy (URWD) and Ukrainian Black-and-White dairy (UBWD) breeds on the level of linear traits evaluation that characterize the udder morphological qualities in the overall system of linear classification of the conformation type. The experiments were conducted in the herds of Cherkasy and Sumy regions for breeding URWD (n = 465) and UBWD (n = 598) breeds. By the trait fore udder parts attachment, reliable difference between cows, estimated at 1 and 9 scores, was 636 (URWD; P <0.001) and 721 (UBWD; P <0.001) days. The difference between the lowest and highest scores of the height of attachment of the udder rear parts in cows of experimental breeds was 663 (URWD; P <0.001) and 715 (UBWD; P <0.001) days. Animals with an assessment of the development of central udder ligament above 5-8 scores lived longer, according to assessed breeds, from 2,402 to 2,723 (URWD) and from 2,572 to 2,869 (UBWD) days. Cows of the UBWD breed estimated at 5-9 scores lived on 141-170 (P <0.01) days longer compared to the URWD cows. Relative variability between the udder depth and lifespan was curvilinear, as higher lifespan observed in cows with 6-7 scores. Cows of both breeds with an average grade of 7 for the fore teats position were used the longest in the herd. Evaluation of the relative variability of the fore teats length and cow's lifespan of controlled breeds showed that cows had a longer functional life with an average score of 5 and 6. The relative variability established between the evaluation of linear traits that characterize the udder morphological structure and the lifespan of cows testified about the effectiveness of animal selection by type in the direction of longevity. In this paper, we consider predators hunting on prey gathered in groups and in such way exhibiting the possibility of reducing the predators pressure. To model this feature, however, we depart from the Holling type II (HTII) response function, in that we assume that a sufficiently large set of prey could respond to individualistic attacks and therefore induce the predator to renounce. The basic idea is described at first in a simple two‐populations predator‐prey system. It is then expanded considering the generalist predators to deal with two prey. In the first case, both are gathered in herds, and in the second one, one of the two instead behaves individualistically. Simple Summary: African swine fever, as an acute, contact-transmitted infection, has a very high mortality and infectivity, and there are no effective drugs that can treat the disease. Therefore, it is necessary to take biosecurity measures in time at the beginning of the disease outbreak. In this article, media coverage is introduced into the African swine fever model, and the results indicate that real-time media coverage of the African swine fever epidemic is beneficial for breeders to scientifically prevent the spread of the epidemic in a timely manner. Through the evaluation of specific prevention and control measures, we suggest that timely disinfection and sterilization measures taken by breeding personnel after receiving relevant reports of the swine fever epidemic can effectively control the spread of the disease. African swine fever is a highly contagious virus that causes pig disease. Its onset process is short, but the mortality rate is as high as 100%. There are still no effective drugs that have been developed to treat African swine fever, and prevention and control measures are currently the best means to avoid infection in pig herds. In this paper, two fractional order mathematical models with media coverage are constructed to describe the transmission of African swine fever. The first model is a basic model with media coverage, and no control measures are considered. For this model, the reproduction number is obtained by using the next generation matrix method. Then, the sufficient conditions for the existence and stability of two equilibriums are obtained. Based on the first model, the second model is established incorporating two control measures. By using Pontryagin's maximal principle, the optimal control solution is derived. After that, some numerical simulations are performed for the two models to verify the theoretical results. Both the qualitative analysis and numerical results indicate that timely media coverage combined with disinfection control measures is crucial to preventing the spread of disease. The dairy sector in Tunisia is based on small-scale farms, with 81% of the breeders owning less than five cows. On these farms, milk is stored in plastic containers, resulting in post-production losses estimated at 10% in the studied region. Due to high temperatures, the present paper aims to study the implementation of an innovative solar-powered milk cooling system in Central Tunisia and assess its profitability for dairy farmers. The methodology is based on a comparison of three small-scale farm business models: a farm without any milk cooling equipment, a farm using an innovative milk cooling technology, and a farm using an electrical cooling tank. Results showed the significance of milk cooling in reducing milk rejection to 0%, leading to a total production of 6400 L per cow by the fifth year. Additionally, milk sales were found to increase due to the premium of 0.010 TND/L for cooled milk paid. In addition, farms utilizing solar-powered milk cooling technology exhibited superior profitability in terms of financial indicators. The objectives were the collection, the classification and the presentation of data obtained from all these farms through interviews, using a questionnaire and through examination of samples collected during the visits. All the farms enrolled in the study were visited by the investigators. Initially, information was obtained by means of a detailed, structured questionnaire with 442 questions. Moreover, samples of milk were collected from the bulk-tank of each farm and faecal samples were collected from female animals in each farm. The milk samples were processed for cytological and microbiological examination. Staphylococcus spp. and Listeria spp. isolates were recovered and identified at a species level; furthermore, a full antibiotic sensitivity pattern assessment was conducted. Faecal samples were processed by standard parasitological tests for the identification of protozoan, trematode, cestode and gastrointestinal and respiratory nematode parasites. The paper presents the cumulative findings of the study, i.e., the answers to the questions during the interviews and the results of the laboratory examinations performed in the samples; the findings are presented separately for sheep and goat farms. The findings can be used as baseline measurements; individual farms and cohorts of farms can be compared against the current results to draw conclusions against the countrywide situation. In this review, the examination focused on the study of AMSs using various modeling approaches. Our review primarily encompassed published articles addressing cows' health, production, and behavior/management. Within this field, Machine Learning (ML) emerged as the prevailing modeling approach. Most of the studies were aimed at detecting cows' health problems, especially mastitis. However, there is still a lack of a robust methodology for utilizing ML techniques in this domain, and it was also observed that the number of positive and negative cases is often unequal, leading to populations that are not balanced when predicting health issues. Only a small number of studies focused on milk production, even though accurate forecasting of individual cow milk yields could be very useful. Additionally, the study of cow behavior and herd management using AMSs is still not very explored. Automatic milking systems (AMS) have played a pioneering role in the advancement of Precision Livestock Farming, revolutionizing the dairy farming industry on a global scale. This review specifically targets papers that focus on the use of modeling approaches within the context of AMS. We conducted a thorough review of 60 articles that specifically address the topics of cows' health, production, and behavior/management Machine Learning (ML) emerged as the most widely used method, being present in 63% of the studies, followed by statistical analysis (14%), fuzzy algorithms (9%), deterministic models (7%), and detection algorithms (7%). A significant majority of the reviewed studies (82%) primarily focused on the detection of cows' health, with a specific emphasis on mastitis, while only 11% evaluated milk production. Additionally, the combination of Battery Energy Storage (BES) systems, Solar Photovoltaic (SPV), and wind systems in the intelligent grid model provides utilities with excellent efficiency and dependability. However, a coordination grid with PV and other resources frequently results in severe issues, such as outages or power disruptions. A power outage in the grid might result in a power loss in the delivery system. This paper proposes a renewable intelligent grid model to sustain solar power generation. The model incorporates a boost converter to optimize the performance of solar panels by converting the DC power generated by the panels into AC power for use in the grid. In this case, the HOA method is used to optimize the control parameters of the boost converter, such as the duty cycle and the inductor and capacitor values. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the situation of some native game species in Giurgiu County, based on official assessments, using data from the Ministry of Environment. The analysis of the official data from the evaluations of sedentary game will give the possibility to assess if the data presented at the evaluations are correct and if the hunters' fears are justified. The analyses also took into account the creditworthiness keys of the hunting areas in order to perform a comparative analysis between the real and the optimal number. Following the analyses performed, and the resulting conclusions, some recommendations were formulated, among which we mention: the active involvement of the administrator of the national hunting fund by participating and supervising the evaluation actions of the sedentary game herds, or the obligation of the managers of the hunting areas to maintain an ascending trend until the optimum number is reached. Skin cells grow in an orderly and controlled manner, in which old cells are pushed to the skin surface by healthy new cells, wherein they finally perish. However, when several cells damage DNA, new ones may start growing disorderly and can finally create cancer cells mass. Different types of skin cancer have been observed by experts. Although, melanoma, as one of the rarely happened cancers, is the most threatening type. Therefore, early detection of this type of cancer can be so useful for avoiding melanoma dangers and even helps to treat this type of cancer. The present paper proposes a new hierarchical procedure for the optimum diagnosis of melanoma cancer from dermoscopy images. Here, after image preprocessing, image segmentation is applied for the segmentation of the ROI. Then, the selection of features from the segmented images is performed and injected to a radial basis function‐based classifier to provide the final diagnosis of cancer. To deliver efficient results, the feature selection and the classifier have been optimized by a new design of Horse herd optimization algorithm (HHOA). The method is then implemented on the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine‐The International Skin Imaging Collaboration (SIIM‐ISIC) Melanoma dataset to validate its effectiveness and its achievements and also put in comparison with several different latest techniques. Lumpy Skin disease (LSD) is an economically important disease in cattle caused by the LSD virus (LSDV) of the genus Capripoxvirus, while pseudocowpox (PCP) is a widely distributed zoonotic cattle disease caused by the PCP virus (PCPV) of the genus Parapoxvirus. Though both viral pox infections are reportedly present in Nigeria, similarities in their clinical presentation and limited access to laboratories often lead to misdiagnosis in the field. This study investigated suspected LSD outbreaks in organized and transhumance cattle herds in Nigeria in 2020. A total of 42 scab/skin biopsy samples were collected from 16 outbreaks of suspected LSD in five northern States of Nigeria. The samples were analyzed using a high-resolution multiplex melting (HRM) assay to differentiate poxviruses belonging to Orthopoxvirus, Capripoxvirus, and Parapoxvirus genera. LSDV was characterized using four gene segments, namely the RNA polymerase 30 kDa subunit (RPO30), G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), the extracellular enveloped virus (EEV) glycoprotein and CaPV homolog of the variola virus B22R. Likewise, the partial B2L gene of PCPV was also analyzed. Nineteen samples (45.2%) were positive according to the HRM assay for LSDV, and five (11.9%) were co-infected with LSDV and PCPV. The multiple sequence alignments of the GPCR, EEV, and B22R showed 100% similarity among the Nigerian LSDV samples, unlike the RPO30 phylogeny, which showed two clusters. Some of the Nigerian LSDVs clustered within LSDV SG II were with commonly circulating LSDV field isolates in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, while the remaining Nigerian LSDVs produced a unique sub-group. The B2L sequences of Nigerian PCPVs were 100% identical and clustered within the PCPV group containing cattle/Reindeer isolates, close to PCPVs from Zambia and Botswana. A dairy farmer's decision to cull or keep dairy cows is likely a complex decision based on animal health and farm management practices. The present paper investigated the relationship between cow longevity and animal health, and between longevity and farm investments, while controlling for farm-specific characteristics and animal management practices, by using Swedish dairy farm and production data for the period 2009 to 2018. We used the ordinary least square and unconditional quantile regression model to perform mean-based and heterogeneous-based analysis, respectively. Findings from the study indicate that, on average, animal health has a negative but insignificant effect on dairy herd longevity. This implies that culling is predominantly done for other reasons than poor health status. Investment in farm infrastructure has a positive and significant effect on dairy herd longevity. The investment in farm infrastructure creates room for new or superior recruitment heifers without the need to cull existing dairy cows. Production variables that prolong dairy cow longevity include higher milk yield and an extended calving interval. Findings from this study imply that the relatively short longevity of dairy cows in Sweden compared with some dairy producing countries is not a result of problems with health and welfare. This paper aims to investigate the influence of increasing chitosan doses on the relative proportion and abundance of cellulotytic, amylolytic bacteria, and Archaea transcripts for grazing cattle. Five rumen cannulated crossbread steers [3.6 months and 300 ± 25 kg body LW (live weight), mean ± standard deviation] were used in a 5 × 5 latin square design, randomly assigned to treatment sequence containing chitosan added to 0, 400, 800, 1200, or 1600 mg/kg concentrate. There was the effect of chitosan on the population of Fibrobacter succinogenes, Ruminococcus albus, and Archaea. The lowest population of these bacteria of 576.60 mg/kg DM (dry matter), 1010.40 mg/kg DM, and 634.80 mg/kg DM were noted when chitosan was added at levels of 3.87, 4.16, and 3.52. Except for Ruminococcus albus, which was not affected by increasing chitosan doses, supplementation of this additive in the concentrate quadratically increased the relative abundance of Fibrobacter succinogenes and Archaea Supplemental 740 mg CHI/kg concentrate for grazing steers receiving concentrate at 150 grams/100 kg LW is recommended to promote minimal effect on the relative population and abundance of cellulolytics and amylomatics and to restrict Archaea growth. This paper seeks to reconstruct the management of food resources in the early Neolithic site of Cabecicos Negros in southeastern Spain. For this purpose, we have studied 29 potsherds from Cabecicos Negros (Andalusia, Spain). Applying the methods of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry we were able to recompose the daily use of the sherds related to the consumption and storage of food products. Among the results obtained in this work, we were able to show new evidence of the exploitation of dairy products in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, as well as provide information on the exploitation and management of the early domestic animals herds. To improve the archaeological results obtained, isotopic results were compared with a modern reference of 53 fat samples from the adipose tissue of domestic pigs and wild boars. In this paper, we focus on some important aspects of model building. The discussion specifically concerns the case of predator–prey interactions. We introduce here two models whose slight difference lies just in the way predators survive. In the former, they are taken to feed only on the modeled prey, i.e., to be specialists; in the second one, they are generalists, i.e., they can survive on other not explicitly modeled food resources. But our main focus is on the prey, that may disappear due to the Allee effect, if reduced to very low numbers. On the other hand, they also exhibit herd behavior. Our main aim is the discussion of the issues of mathematical modeling of such situation. We show on this example that modeling requires much more than equations patching from different systems. The analysis of the models indicates that the ecosystem may collapse in the case of specialist predators. If the predators have other feeding resources, they instead can thrive. Cattle have been the focus of an intense debate between those concerned about, among other things, the possible negative effects on global warming, land degradation, food competition, and human health and those who are positive toward the possible role of cattle in maintaining global socio-economic and environmental sustainability. This paper reviews the pros and cons in view of a projected increase in demand for animal-based foods and therefore in cattle numbers. Analyses of cattle numbers and foods from various literature sources suggest gross overestimation towards 2050. Although cattle are responsible for a major portion of methane emissions, the atmospheric accumulation of methane from cattle could possibly be overestimated due to methane's short atmospheric lifespan, recent calculations of enteric fermentation, and methane's warming potential, and the role of cattle in carbon sequestration and being a sink. Since carbon sequestration has more potential than emission reduction in limiting global warming, photosynthetic capacity should be maximised. It is concluded that whereas concerns about animal welfare, zoonosis, and antimicrobial resistance should be addressed, the call for a reduction in global cattle numbers because of the perceived negative effects mentioned above may be unwarranted. In Tunisia, the recognition of the possibility of including longevity and disease resistance in dairy cattle selection objectives has been hypothesized as a useful strategy by both researchers and producers. However, in this paper, the state of the art, with a focus on health and longevity, is reviewed. Along the same lines, the heritability for the milk traits, fertility traits, and longevity of Tunisian Holstein dairy cows complies with the literature. Therefore, the influence of genetics on some diseases of the dairy cow was investigated. In addition, a decreasing efficiency in cow fertility has been observed over the last few years. The results showed that the risk of culling increased with common diseases. When analyzed with the Weibull model, functional lifespan was strongly influenced by milk yield; therefore, the risk increased with a reduced milk yield. In her first three lactations, the relative risk of selection increased gradually with lactation. Thus, the risk of thinning is highest at the beginning and end of the first feeding and the end of her second feeding. In conclusion, the risk of culling was reduced in parity. Context: The performance of commercial beef-breeding herds in northern Australia is highly variable. Identifying and understanding the major factors that influence this is critical in determining which management interventions should be implemented to best manage these factors. Aims: This study aimed to describe the occurrence and magnitude of the risk factors identified as being strongly associated with one or more measures of cow performance in northern Australia. Methods: A prospective epidemiological study was conducted in a cross-section of commercial beef-breeding herds in northern Australia, to determine and quantify the major associations of up to 83 candidate herd management, nutritional and environmental risk factors with cow performance. Descriptive analyses of significant risk factors were conducted. Key results: Unfavourable levels of risk factors were observed for all country types and across three cow-age groups. However, generally, adverse property-level nutritional, environmental and management risk factors had a higher incidence in the Northern Forest, which was associated with significantly lower performance of heifers and cows. This was reflected in generally lower body condition of heifers and cows in this country type. Although the performance of heifers and cows was generally higher in the Southern Forest, the irregular incidence of adverse risk factors contributed to the observed quite variable performance. Conclusions: The factors significantly affecting the performance of cows in the major beef-breeding regions of northern Australia are described. These factors were additively more adverse in the Northern Forest. Implications: In this study, the necessary understanding of the factors most likely to be affecting the performance beef cows in this environment has been described. This is required to make appropriate decisions about management interventions to control these factors. Context: High and variable fetal and calf loss in beef herds occurs across northern Australia. Reasons for the majority of these losses, a major cost to the industry, have remained unknown. Aims: The research question was, which of the 58 region-, property-, management group-, and animal-level risk factors measured are associated with pregnant females failing to wean their calf? Methods: An epidemiological study measured fetal and calf loss (consistently expressed as % points) between confirmed pregnancy and weaning and the major associated risk factors using a selected population from 55 commercial beef breeding herds representing 23 166 pregnancies in the mostly dry tropical environment of northern Australia. Key results: Median fetal and calf loss was 9.5% with large variation. Achievable levels appeared to be <10% for Northern Forest herds, and <5% for Southern Forest, Central Forest and Northern Downs herds. The risk factors most strongly associated with fetal and calf loss were low-fertility country type interacting with phosphorus inadequacy (up to 10% increase), low body condition score interacting with phosphorus inadequacy (up to 8% increase), tall cows (up to 4% increase), and high temperature–humidity index around calving interacting with country type (up to 7% increase). These are nutritional and environmental risk factors and had the combined highest individual effect and frequency. Other risk factors associated with fetal and calf loss included first-lactation cows, which interacted with mustering around calving (up to 9% increase), having not reared a calf in the previous year interacting with cow age (up to 8% increase), low mustering efficiency (up to 9% increase), perceived predation by wild dogs (4–5% increase), high prevalence of Campylobacter fetus sp. venerealis antibodies (7% increase), recent infection with bovine viral diarrhoea virus (9% increase), and inadequate dry-season protein (4% increase). Conclusions: The combined effects of environmental, nutritional and management risk factors on fetal and calf loss in northern Australia were large and additive and were much greater, collectively up to 30–40%, and more consistent than that due to either endemic infectious diseases or animal factors. Implications: Opportunity for remedial action is high and, for the effect of non-infectious risk factors, should target milk delivery to neonatal calves. Context: There are multiple reports of high annual cow mortality rates in northern Australia, but no reports clearly indicating the overall rates and the impact of primary risk factors. Aims: The research aimed to determine which measured region-, property-, management group- and animal-level risk factors are associated with missing pregnant females. Methods: Risk factors for the annual rate of pregnant-cow mortality were investigated in an epidemiological study using outcomes for 21 554 cows from 52 beef herds in 2009 and 2010 in four primary country types within the mostly-dry tropical north Australian environment. Modelling of 2001–2011 Australian beef-herd statistics was used to corroborate and further quantify findings. Key results: In the epidemiological study, the overall predicted annual mean incidence of missing pregnant cows, a surrogate for mortality, was 10.9%, including lost tags and unrecorded cow movement that were estimated to constitute up to 9% missing cows. Risk factors associated with higher pregnant-cow mortality were as follows: not having follow-up rainfall more than 30 days after the first wet-season storms (4 percentage point increase); <2 t/ha of available pasture biomass in the early dry season (2–6 percentage point increase); pasture dry-season biomass <2 t/ha interacting with less than moderate mid-dry-season body condition score (3–10 percentage point increase); and, calving between April and September (non-significant trend for a 1–2 percentage point increase). Feed-quality measures did not affect mortality rate. Population modelling of Australian beef herd statistics suggested an average annual cow mortality rate in the Northern Forest region of ~7% compared with 2% in more nutritionally endowed regions. Conclusions: The major risk factor for cow mortality is under-nutrition, related either to generally-low soil fertility, seasonally-dry conditions, or management that exposes animals to poor nutrition. Annual mortality of pregnant cows appears 6–9 percentage points higher in the low-fertility Northern Forest region than elsewhere. Implications: Beef cow mortality is a major business cost in northern Australia. The efficacy of targeted management to achieve high cow performance was demonstrated by losses in a third of studied businesses in the Northern Forest being kept to the same or lower levels as median loss in endowed regions. Context: Sound reproductive efficiency is a key determinant for the overall productivity and profitability of a beef breeding business. Failure of a cow to conceive results in either culling or the cost of carrying non-pregnant animals. Aims: This study aimed to determine and quantify the major factors associated with non-pregnancy in commercial beef breeding herds of northern Australia. Methods: A prospective population-based epidemiological study of the likelihood of non-pregnancy in cows after an annual mating in northern Australian beef breeding cows used data from 73 herds from four broad country types and 62 323 animal years; approximately 80 property-, management-group- and cow-level risk factors were considered. A multivariable model building process was employed to scrutinise the resulting dataset, so as to identify what herd management practices, nutritional, environmental, and individual cow factors were associated with non-pregnancy and estimate their magnitude of effect. Key results: Non-pregnancy was disproportionately high in the Northern Forest (32.1%), compared with the Northern Downs, Central Forest and Southern Forest where it was 17.1%, 16.0% and 13.2% respectively. Time of expected calving had the largest impact on occurrence of non-pregnancy. Parity also had a significant influence, with first-lactation cows typically having 5–12% higher non-pregnancy than did mature cows. Non-pregnancy decreased with an increasing body condition score at the branding/weaning muster for lactating cows. The difference in non-pregnancy when comparing availability of wet-season pasture phosphorus content and digestibility of pasture during the dry season was 13.2 and 10.2 percentage points respectively. Conclusions: This study demonstrated the substantial impact environment, herd management practices, nutrition and disease factors can have on the reproductive performance of females. Implications: To optimise the efficiency of females (through reducing the occurrence of non-pregnancy) under commercial conditions in northern Australia, production systems should support beef herds calving early in the production year, being in at least moderate body condition and having access to more digestible pastures that address the nutritional requirements for both protein and phosphorus. This indicates focus for management, especially in the Northern Forest where the likelihood of non-pregnancy was highest. Context: Sound reproductive efficiency is a key determinant for the overall productivity of a beef breeding business. For beef breeding herds to obtain high levels of reproductive productivity, breeding females need to efficiently become pregnant while lactating. Aims: This study aimed to determine and quantify the major factors associated with lactating cows becoming pregnant within 4 months of calving (P4M) in commercial beef breeding herds of northern Australia. Methods: A prospective epidemiological study was conducted using 78 commercial northern Australian beef breeding herds and involved 78 000 cattle that were monitored for 3–4 years. A multivariable model-building process was employed to scrutinise the resulting dataset to identify what herd-management practices, and nutritional, environmental and individual cow factors were major determinants of lactating cows becoming pregnant within 4 months of calving (P4M) and to estimate their magnitudes of effect. Key results: Overall, 41.6% of cows per production year were successful for P4M. Country type was strongly associated with 65.4%, 57.5%, 61.8% and 16.4% P4M for the Southern Forest, Central Forest, Northern Downs, and Northern Forest respectively. Between-year variability ranged between 3.3 and 11.7 percentage points. Cows calving in December–January (61%) had a substantially higher occurrence of P4M than did cows calving between July and September (15%). The difference in P4M when comparing availability of wet-season pasture protein and phosphorus was 12.7 and 20.3 percentage points respectively. Modelling of the impact of group seroprevalence and management group prevalence of recent infection with several infectious diseases was estimated, with a large negative association between group bovine viral diarrhoea seroprevalence and P4M suggested. Conclusions: This study further demonstrated the substantial impact that environment, herd management practices, nutrition and disease factors can have on the reproductive performance of females. Implications: To optimise the performance of females (through increasing the occurrence of cows contributing calves in consecutive years) under commercial conditions in northern Australia, herd managers should focus on maximising the proportion of cows within a herd calving at the desired time of the year, ensuring that any nutritional deficiencies and herd health issues are managed, and that cows are managed such that they are of good body condition score at the time of calving. The paper aims to present the situation of animal husbandry activity in the counties with mountain area in Romania, in 2019, in relation to the activity of milk collection and processing in the 27 counties with mountain area. This paper is based on statistical data provided by the National Sanitary-Veterinary and Food Safety Authority, the National Institute of Statistics and the National Agency for Mountain Area (ANZM). These data were statistically processed within the National Agency for Mountain Area in the following indicators: number of counties with mountain area, number of administrative-territorial units in the mountain area, total area of the mountain area (km²), number of animals in the mountain area (cattle, sheep, goats) in 2019, the total area of permanent meadows in the mountain area (ha), number of milk collection centers in the counties with mountain area, number of milk processing units in the counties with mountain area. The statistically processed data show that in counties with large herds of animals there are milk processing centers and units compared to counties with small herds of animals that do not have centers and units of milk processing or are few. This study assesses the practices and views of Scottish dairy farmers relating to pasture-based and indoor systems. There are the debates about the environmental, economic and animal welfare implications of these systems. Indoor dairy farming is a contentious practice among the public. While this controversy is sometimes represented as a lack of public understanding, there is a need for more research on farmers' views to facilitate discussion in the industry. A survey was posted to 909 dairy farmers in Scotland with questions about their grazing practices and attitudes to grazing and indoor systems. 254 surveys were completed, online and in paper form. There was a 26% response rate to the paper version of the survey. The results showed that 19% of respondents housed some or all the cows all year-round. 68% agreed or strongly agreed that cows should graze for part of the year and 51% agreed or strongly agreed that welfare was better if cows grazed for part of the year. These views coexisted with the view that management was more important than the type of system for determining profitability or welfare outcomes (83% and 82% strongly agree or agree respectively). Respondents whose system involved grazing and respondents who had spent longer in farming were moderately more likely to agree that cows should have access to pasture, and slightly less likely to agree that management was more important than system for determining welfare outcomes. The results indicate that the picture is more complicated than the public rejecting indoor dairy farming and those in the industry accepting it. The results showed that a majority preference for cows to graze co-existed with the view that management was more important than system. In terms of industry and policy recommendations, the research suggests that measures should be taken to safeguard farmers' ability to graze through for instance research and advisory support on grazing; ensuring different systems are not penalised in the development of dairy sector environmental measures and recommendations; and potentially supply chains that financially rewards farmers for grazing. In this paper, we are proposing two novel swarm intelligence approaches for solving discrete problems. Two different continuous evolutionary algorithms inspired by the behaviour of elephants, namely elephant herding optimization and elephant swarm water search algorithm, are studied and analysed in order to propose discrete versions of the latter called discrete elephant herding optimization and discrete elephant swarm water search algorithm. As an illustration of how our proposals can work on discrete problems, a case study on association rule mining is carried out where the proposed discrete algorithms are modelled and applied on the problem in order to extract interesting association rules from large‐scale databases. Extensive experiments on eight different real‐life and relevant datasets with various sizes showed that both our proposals yield good results that compete and sometimes outperform state of the art algorithms. Mastitis is one of the most common issues for milk producers around the world. Antibiotic therapy is often ineffective, and therefore, scientists must find a new solution. The aim of this paper is to estimate the influence of common and well-known cosmetic substrates and mixtures of nanoparticles (NPs) and cosmetic substrates on the viability of frequently occurring mastitis pathogens, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The obtained results suggest that only collagen + elastin and glycerine influenced and increased bacteria viability. In case of the rest of the cosmetic substrates, the viability of E. coli and S. aureus was decreased, and the results were statistically significant (p ≤ 0.01). Prepared pre-dipping and dipping mixtures decrease (p ≤ 0.01) the viability of the mentioned pathogens. The obtained results of the in vitro analysis are very promising. In the next step, prepared mixtures should be tested in different herd conditions if they can be used in mastitis prevention or decrease the number of subclinical mastitis cases. Furthermore, these mixtures could become an interesting alternative for organic milk production where conventional preparations and antibiotics are forbidden. The Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) enables analysis and comparison of farms business data, and the dairy sector has been selected because of its great importance in the European Union (EU). This paper analyses the economic characteristics of Croatian dairy farms divided into three types (based on herd size), in the period from the year 2014 to 2018. While the number of smaller farms is declining, there is a slight increase in the largest farm type. The amount of milk produced per farm is also growing, but it is still significantly lower than the European average. According to the realized net value added per unit of labour, small and medium-sized dairy farms are below, while large ones are above the European average. The share of direct payments in net value added is higher for all farm types compared to the European average. Relatively low milk yield and selling price, with high operating costs results in lower net production margins and affects the lower competitiveness of smaller farms with lower yields. According to the results of the FADN analysis, the largest Croatian dairy farms Type 3 (with 50 or more cows in the herd) are fully competitive to European farms in terms of economic results. The problem of Croatian dairy farming is that there are only few competitive farms, so different agricultural and rural development measures should support the empowerment of smaller farms, as well as strengthen the competitiveness of the whole dairy sector. The development and optimization of reproductive biotechnology – specifically semen cryopreservation, spermatological diagnostics, and intraspecies cloning by somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) – have become essential techniques to conserve the genetic resources and establish genetic reserves of endangered or vanishing native Polish livestock breeds. Moreover, this biotechnology is necessary for perpetuating biological diversity and enhancing genetic variability as well as for restoring and reintroducing breeds into anthropogenic agricultural ecosystems. On the one hand, the purpose of our paper is to interpret recent efforts aimed at the ex situ conservation of native cattle and pig breeds. On the other, it emphasizes the prominent role played by the National Research Institute of Animal Production (NRIAP) in maintaining biodiversity in agricultural environmental niches. Furthermore, our paper provides an overview of the conventional and modern strategies of the banking and cryopreservation of germplasm-carrier biological materials and somatic cell lines, spermatological diagnostics, and semen-based and SCNT-mediated assisted reproductive technologies (ART s). The era of rapid industrialization succeeded by a shift in organizational focus on research and technology development which has fueled many industries along with the dairy industry to grow at an exponential rate. The dairy industry has achieved remarkable growth in the last decade in India. Waste produced by dairy industry consists of a high organic load thus cannot be discharged untreated. Even though treatment and management of waste are well documented, but the main problem is concerned with sludge produced after treatment. There is a gap in the application of various methods for effective treatment of the waste, hence there is a need for technology-oriented research in this area because of a paradigm shift in perspectives towards sustainable management of waste to recover value added products including energy as energy demand is also rising. Sludge which is generally land spread can also be used for energy generation. This paper discusses the environmental effects of waste generated due to dairy industrial activities; various methods used for the advanced treatment of dairy waste. This review article aims to present and discuss the state-of-art information for recovery of value-added products (single cell protein, biofertilizers, biopolymers and biosurfactants) from dairy waste with emphasis on integration of technologies for environmental sustainability.
