The 'rain use efficiency' (RUE) may be defined as the ratio of above-ground net primary productivity (ANPP) to annual precipitation, and it is claimed to be a conservative property of the vegetation cover in drylands, if the vegetation cover is not subject to non-precipitation related land degradation. Consequently, RUE may be regarded as means of normalizing ANPP for the impact of annual precipitation, and as an indicator of non-precipitation related land degradation. Large scale and long term identification and monitoring of land degradation in drylands, such as the Sahel, can only be achieved by use of Earth Observation (EO) data. This paper demonstrates that the use of the standard EO-based proxy for ANPP, summed normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Global Inventory Modeling and Mapping Studies 3rd generation (GIMMS3g)) over the year (ΣNDVI), and the blended EO/rain gauge based data-set for annual precipitation (Climate Prediction Center Merged Analysis of Precipitation, CMAP) results in RUE-estimates which are highly correlated with precipitation, rendering RUE useless as a means of normalizing for the impact of annual precipitation on ANPP. By replacing ΣNDVI by a 'small NDVI integral', covering only the rainy season and counting only the increase of NDVI relative to some reference level, this problem is solved. Using this approach, RUE is calculated for the period 1982-2010. The result is that positive RUE-trends dominate in most of the Sahel, indicating that non-precipitation related land degradation is not a widespread phenomenon. Furthermore, it is argued that two preconditions need to be fulfilled in order to obtain meaningful results from the RUE temporal trend analysis: First, there must be a significant positive linear correlation between annual precipitation and the ANPP proxy applied. Second, there must be a near-zero correlation between RUE and annual precipitation. Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and the change of climate variables will eventually have a great impact on vegetation cover and agricultural practices, especially in the arid area Xinjiang in China, whose agriculture and ecosystems are heavily vulnerable to climate change. In this paper, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was used to study the vegetation growth and its response to climate change in Xinjiang. Firstly, two NDVI datasets (Global Inventory Modeling and Mapping Studies (GIMMS) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)) were merged through a pixel-wise regression analysis to obtain a long time series of NDVI data, and then, relationships between yearly NDVI and yearly climate variables, and monthly NDVI and monthly climate variables were extensively investigated for grassland and cropland in northern and southern Xinjiang, respectively. Results show the following: (1) there was an increasing trend in NDVI for both grassland and cropland in both northern and southern Xinjiang over the past decades and trends were significant except that for grassland in northern Xinjiang; (2) precipitation and evaporation were more important than temperature for grassland in northern Xinjiang, while precipitation and temperature were more important than evaporation for grassland in southern Xinjiang and cropland in both northern and southern Xinjiang; (3) NDVI was highly correlated with accumulated monthly precipitation instead of monthly precipitation, and there was a lagged effect of precipitation, temperature, and evaporation on NDVI change. However, lagged effects were only significant in specific months. The impact of human management, in particular livestock grazing, on the vegetation cover of the Sahel is still debated. In a range of studies, satellite images have been used to analyze the development of the Sahelian vegetation cover over time. These studies did not reveal any significant degradation of the Sahel in the last two decades. In this paper, we examine the ecological assumptions underlying the use of satellite imagery to analyze degradation of the Sahel. Specifically, we analyze the variability of the rain-use efficiency (RUE), which is often used as an indicator for the state of the vegetation cover. We detect a fundamental flaw in the way RUE has been handled in most remote sensing studies; they ignored the relation between annual rainfall variation and RUE. Because of the upward trend in annual rainfall that occurred during the 1980s and 1990s, this leads to a bias in the interpretation of the satellite images. In this paper, we show the importance of the variability in RUE for the analysis of remote sensing imagery of semiarid rangelands. Our analysis also shows that it is likely that there has been anthropogenic degradation of the Sahelian vegetation cover in the last two decades. This has important consequences for the debate on the impacts of grazing on semiarid rangelands. Furthermore, the occurrence of anthropogenic degradation is relevant to explain the magnitude of 20th century Sahelian droughts. This paper is based on an integrated assessment of abandoned farmland in the Iberian Southeast, a representative area of rich-biodiversity landscapes subject to strong physical stress and highly sensitive to environmental change. It is framed within the concept of natural reforestation and seeks an integration of physical and biodiversity features relevant for management. In pilot areas of different lithology (marly, limestone, and metamorphic) and abandonment age (< or >20 years), several physical (soil characteristics, evidences of erosion) and biodiversity (flora and birds) indicators have been assessed. It is concluded that these two sets of indicators often follow divergent or contrasting trajectories, particularly in the less coherent substrates where soil degradation and erosion concur with steppic physiognomy and high ornithological value. Lithology conditions the compositional and structural development of woody vegetation, but local landscape degradation can also reduce the pool of potential colonizers. Ecosystem development can be described as the interplay of positive and negative forces acting on physical evolution and biodiversity change. Abandonment per se is not a widely applicable management option but in many instances it can naturally improve soil and vegetation conditions. In more resistant lithologies, succession could lead to landscape homogenization, although recovery is usually slow and can eventually be arrested in stages dominated by a few woody species. Although our results are not generalizable to all semiarid land abandonment, they provide a framework for selecting management measures and for setting the scale and intensity of their application. Abstract: It is commonly accepted that, following the end of the Pleistocene, semi-arid deciduous oak woodlands did not spread in the Irano-Anatolian region of Southwest Asia as quickly as they did in the Levantine Mediterranean littoral, despite the fact that climatic improvement occurred broadly at the same time in both regions. Prehistoric impacts on woodland vegetation (such as woodcutting, burning and clearance for cultivation), the harsh continental climate of inland Southwest Asia and its distance from late Pleistocene arboreal refugia have all been discussed in the literature as likely causes of the delay. In this paper we argue that semi-arid deciduous oak woodlands should not be viewed as part of the “natural” vegetation of the Irano-Anatolian region that has been progressively destroyed by millennia of human activities since the Neolithic. They represent instead one of the earliest anthropogenic vegetation types in Southwest Asia, one that owes its very existence to prehistoric landscape practices other scholars commonly label as “destructive”. Drawing on anthracological, pollen and modern vegetation data from central Anatolia we describe how the post-Pleistocene species-rich and structurally diverse temperate semi-arid savanna grasslands were gradually substituted by low-diversity, even-aged Quercus-dominated parklands and wood pastures in the course of the early Holocene. Economic strategies that encouraged the establishment and spread of deciduous oaks included sheep herding that impacted on grass and forb vegetation, the controlling of competing arboreal vegetation through woodcutting, and woodland management practices such as coppicing, pollarding and shredding that enhanced Quercus vegetative propagation, crown and stem growth. Understanding the origin and evolution of the Irano-Anatolian semi-arid oak woodlands of Southwest Asia is of critical importance for reconstructing the changing ecologies and geographical distributions of the progenitors of domesticated crop species, and the nature and scale of early agricultural impacts on the landscape. The article presents a response to a comment to the article "The Inappropriate Use of Crop Transpiration Coefficients (Kc) to Estimate Evapotranspiration in Arid Ecosystems: A Review." The authors asserted that the objective of the article is to critically examine the Kc method in general perspective. The authors specifically cited that the comments to the article were based on two published papers. And that the common problems in these two papers are overestimating the role of groundwater, assuming that vegetation responds linearly to changes in depth to water, and presuming that higher water tables represent unstressed environments for plants. The concerns of the authors on the oversimplification involved in the Kc method are discussed.

Abstract: In this paper we explore the evidence for Holocene Rapid Climate Changes (RCCs) in Western Mediterranean records, examining similarities and differences in the timing and nature of impacts on different components of the natural environment (vegetation, fluvial and coastal sedimentation, fire activity, soil formation). Marine, lacustrine, and fluvial archives of the Western Mediterranean (Iberian Peninsula and Northwest Africa) provide evidence for both pervasive millennial-scale climatic variability and abrupt (decadal- to centennial-scale) transitions. We focus in particular on three RCCs characterised by high-latitude cooling, glacier advances and North-Atlantic ice-rafting events: the mid-Holocene RCC interval 6–5calka BP, the late-Holocene RCC interval 3.5–2.5calka BP, and the historical RCC interval known as the Little Ice Age (LIA, 1300–1950AD). Evidence from multiple records indicates wide-ranging impacts of RCCs in the Western Mediterranean region. The three RCC intervals were characterised, however, by contrasting hydrological situations in the Western Mediterranean, with prevailing dry conditions including marked aridification events during the RCC intervals 6–5 and 3.5–2.5calka BP, and prevailing or recurrent wet conditions during the LIA. We examine issues of proxy sensitivity in palaeoecological and geomorphological records and evaluate examples of contrasting geomorphological responses to regional climatic triggers between humid and semi-arid sectors of the Western Mediterranean. Finally, we consider the long-term sensitivity of the region to rapid climate change, the role of threshold changes, and the extent to which this region represents a “fragile” landscape. Abstract: An oasis is defined here as an efficient eco-geographical landscape that allows flourishing vegetation or human settlement due to a stable water supply in an arid region. The water resource is the major limiting factor impacting the oasis scale in arid regions. For discussion of the suitable scale of an oasis supported by a specific quantity of water resource, the Manas River Basin, a typical continental river basin in the arid region of China, was taken as the study object. Based on the remote sensing images and socio-economic data, the stability and suitable scale of oasis in 1976, 1987, 1998, 2010, and 2020 were analyzed using an oasis water-heat balance model. The results indicated that (1) the respective stability index (H 0) of 1976, 1987, 1998, and 2010 was 0.10, 0.15, 0.40, and 0.38, respectively, changing from an unstable level into a metastable level. (2) Under the guarantee of natural oasis ecosystem stability, the suitable scales of natural oasis in 1976, 1987, 1998, and 2010 were 697.2–1045.7 km2, 942.2–1413.3 km2, 2042.0–3063.0 km2, and 1428.2–2142.3 km2, respectively. The suitable scales of the total oases were 3681.3–4030.3 km2, 5259.1–5730.2 km2, 7654.5–8675.5 km2, and 8130.3–8844.4 km2, respectively. (3) If the artificial oasis scale remained unchanged from 2010, the suitable scale of the natural oasis in the Manas River Basin in 2020 would be 1695.8–2543.8 km2, and the suitable scale of the total oases would be 8398–9246 km2. With a reasonable proportion between natural and artificial oases, the suitable scales of each would be 3400.3–5100.5 km2 and 2266.9–3400.4 km2. This paper not only provides data for reasonable oasis planning of the Manas River Basin, but also provides a new direction for studies on the suitable scale of oases in arid regions. Abstract: This paper presents a combination of techniques suitable for remotely sensing foliar Nitrogen (N) in semiarid shrublands – a capability that would significantly improve our limited understanding of vegetation functionality in dryland ecosystems. The ability to estimate foliar N distributions across arid and semi-arid environments could help answer process-driven questions related to topics such as controls on canopy photosynthesis, the influence of N on carbon cycling behavior, nutrient pulse dynamics, and post-fire recovery. Our study determined that further exploration into estimating sagebrush canopy N concentrations from an airborne platform is warranted, despite remote sensing challenges inherent to open canopy systems. Hyperspectral data transformed using standard derivative analysis were capable of quantifying sagebrush canopy N concentrations using partial least squares (PLS) regression with an R 2 value of 0.72 and an R 2 predicted value of 0.42 (n =35). Subsetting the dataset to minimize the influence of bare ground (n =19) increased R 2 to 0.95 (R 2 predicted=0.56). Ground-based estimates of canopy N using leaf mass per unit area measurements (LMA) yielded consistently better model fits than ground-based estimates of canopy N using cover and height measurements. The LMA approach is likely a method that could be extended to other semiarid shrublands. Overall, the results of this study are encouraging for future landscape scale N estimates and represent an important step in addressing the confounding influence of bare ground, which we found to be a major influence on predictions of sagebrush canopy N from an airborne platform. Abstract: This paper analyzes the potential of the radar altimeter onboard ENVISAT for estimating surface soil moisture in the semi-arid Gourma region in Northern Mali. To this end, the relationships between observed backscattering coefficients derived from 4 retracking algorithms, namely Ocean, Ice-1, Ice-2 and Sea-Ice, and ground data, including soil type, topography, vegetation and soil moisture are investigated. The considered period is 2002–2010. Results show a strong linear relationship between the backscattering coefficients and surface soil moisture measured at six different stations along the satellite track. The best results are obtained with the Ice-1 and Ice-2 algorithms. In these cases, correlation coefficients are higher than 0.8 with RMSE smaller than 2%. Vegetation effects are found to be small due both to the nadir-looking configuration of the radar altimeter and to the low vegetation cover. Finally, the relationship between soil moisture and normalized backscattering coefficient is used to retrieve soil moisture from the altimeter data. These estimates are then compared to soil moisture estimations obtained from the METeorological Operational (METOP) Advanced SCATterometer (ASCAT). These results highlight the high capabilities of Ku-band altimeters to provide an accurate estimation of surface soil moisture in semiarid regions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Although numerous factors influence soil-water content, it is considered a key indicator of rangeland health. This paper investigates the effect of grazing on soil-water content using three treatments within the same soil association. The treatments, simulated holistic planned grazing (SHPG), rest-rotation (RESTROT), and total rest (TREST) applied stocking rates of 36, 6, and 0 animal days/hectare respectively. Soil-water content was measured continuously from 2006 to 2008 using 36 capacitance sensors. Statistical analyses revealed differences in percent volumetric-water content (%VWC) and in all treatments, the SHPG pasture had the highest %VWC. Mixed procedures models indicate strong environmental and treatment effects as explanatory variables for the observed difference in %VWC. Although results of vegetation cover analyses indicated no difference in percent shrub cover in the two production pastures (SHPG and RESTROT), percent litter cover differed in the latter years of this study. It was concluded that in addition to a variety of other factors, management decisions (grazing and rest) can have substantial influence upon soil-water content and that soil-water content can vary substantially as a result of animal impact and the duration of grazing. Abstract: In the Tarim River Basin, the desert riparian forest vegetation is under high-temperature and aridity stress. However, the vegetation can grow continuously because of deep rooting that can reach groundwater, which can thus redistribute water into the upper soil profile. This paper describes patterns of hydraulic lift by Populus euphratica Oliv. and discusses its ecological effects. Our results show that the tap root sap velocity of P. euphratica Oliv. is positive during the day and night. However, a reverse sap flow was observed in the lateral roots during the night. The soil water content of the subsoil was higher than that of the topsoil at depths of 0–120cm. When the sap flow of the lateral roots was reversed at night, the soil water content clearly increased. In particular, at depths of 60–120cm, the soil water content at 4:00 was 28–38% greater than that at 16:00. The vapor pressure deficit was a factor that predominantly affected the root sap velocity, and the smaller vapor pressure deficit often facilitated a reverse sap flow in the lateral roots. Abstract: Australia has not always been arid, and the central desert was once well watered. This paper traces the changes in climate and vegetation, leading to the present aridity. At the beginning of the Cenozoic, continental Australia had a warm and humid climate, and the vegetation was mainly meso–micro-thermal (warm to cool temperate) rainforest. Central Australia experienced seasonal rainfall and there may have been limited aridity in the northwest. By the mid–late Eocene, rainforest in central Australia was restricted to the well-watered valley bottoms, with sclerophyll vegetation on the slopes and ridges. In the latest Eocene–earliest Oligocene, there was an abrupt cooling of ocean waters and the diversity of megathermal angiosperms decreased. The early–mid-Miocene was warm–humid and there was a considerable diversity of forest types. Woodlands and Casuarinaceae forests became more common. Central Australia was seasonal, with a very warm season of high evaporation. In Western Australia, regular flows in the palaeodrainage systems had stopped by the mid-Miocene and this marked the first major step towards aridity. The late Miocene was cool and dry, with a major reduction of rainforests and an increase of Eucalyptus/casuarinaceous sclerophyll forests in inland southeastern Australia. Regular burning became a feature of the eucalypt forests. Rainforest persisted, however, along the east coast and highlands of Australia. Central Australia became more arid with dry woodland and chenopod shrublands. Rainforests continued to decrease during the Pliocene and grasslands developed in central northern Australia. By the early Pleistocene, the modern climatic regime had been established, but precipitation was higher than today. Cycles of open, shrubland/grasslands/herbfields and wooded vegetation accompanied the arid glacial and humid interglacial cycles (respectively). About 0.5Ma, there was a change to a drier climate, but it was still wetter than today. The last glacial period was particularly harsh, and the present interglacial period is drier than the previous interglacial. Aridity has thus increased in a number of steps, following the first major step towards aridity in the early Miocene. Distinctive elements of the vegetation can be traced back to times when the arid zone was humid and supported rainforest. The elements, which have remained in arid regions, are the few that could tolerate or adapt to the drier climates. Abstract: This paper analyses the role of climatic aridity on the spatial differences of vegetation activity and its inter-annual variability in a semi-arid region of the North East of the Iberian Peninsula. The vegetation activity was quantified by means of a monthly Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) database from NOAA–AVHRR satellite images (1987–2000) at 1km2 of spatial resolution. Coefficients of variation (CoV) from temporal NDVI series were also calculated. The greater temporal variability of NDVI was recorded in areas with low vegetation cover (steppe and dry farming lands), whereas the lowest temporal variability of NDVI was recorded in the irrigated lands and forests located in the most humid areas. There is a strong and negative relationship between the CoV and the NDVI distribution, but we recorded important differences among land uses. Using maps of annual precipitation and temperature obtained by means of a regression-based method, we studied the influence of aridity on spatial patterns of NDVI and CoV values. The results show the high influence of aridity on the spatial distribution of vegetation activity in the Middle Ebro Valley. Aridity causes a general decrease of NDVI and an increase of CoV. Nevertheless, non-linear relationships between aridity and NDVI and CoV were recorded for the whole of the study area and for the different land uses. Abstract: Science is frequently touted as the solution to dryland management problems, yet most management decisions are, by necessity, based primarily on expert knowledge and experience. This paper describes an integrated framework for organizing, synthesizing, and applying our growing understanding of aridland ecosystems using a flexible, multi-objective assessment, monitoring, and management approach. The framework is dual-purpose: (1) to coordinate the use of existing tools, resources, and diffuse knowledge, and (2) to facilitate the integration and application of new knowledge as it is developed. In particular, this framework must facilitate the integration of new knowledge about linkages among landscape units across scales. The framework includes five elements: (1) an ecological site-based approach for categorizing land based on soils and climate, (2) a repository for organizing existing data and knowledge about each ecological site, (3) conceptual models that organize information on the impacts of management and climate variability, and protocols for (4) assessing and (5) monitoring key ecosystem attributes fundamental to a variety of management objectives. Within this framework, basic and applied research are explicitly linked to management of arid and semi-arid ecosystems to more effectively articulate research questions and set research priorities. Abstract: The objective of this paper is to illustrate the importance of variation in water availability to temporal variation in vegetation dynamics in arid and semi-arid ecosystems. We hypothesize that fine-scale pulses of precipitation interact with longer scale variation in climate and weather to generate temporal variation in plant community composition. Arid and semi-arid regions exhibit great temporal variability in water availability as a result of variation in climate and weather at multiple scales and vegetation-soil water feedbacks. The scales of variation include: shifting climate regimes over centuries and decades, inter-annual variation in weather patterns, seasonal differences in winter and summer precipitation, and within-season variability in precipitation frequency and magnitude. In arid and semi-arid regions, pulses of rainfall are separated by intervening dry periods of variable lengths. This situation results in fluctuating availability of water that limits plant production and controls other ecological processes, such as rates of nutrient cycling. In some semi-arid and arid systems, temporal variation in water availability may create positive feedbacks that facilitate encroachment of C3 woody plant species into areas formerly dominated by C4 grasses. Our ability to predict these complex shifts in vegetation composition may be improved by including temporal variation in climate, weather, and ecosystem processes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

1. This paper explores soil seed bank composition and its contribution to the vegetation dynamics of a hydrologically variable desert floodplain in central Australia: the Cooper Creek floodplain. We investigated patterns in soil seed bank composition both temporally, in response to flooding (and drying), and spatially, with relation to flood frequency. Correlations between extant vegetation and soil seed bank composition are explored with respect to flooding. 2. A large and diverse germinable soil seed bank was detected comprising predominantly annual monocot and annual forb species. Soil seed bank composition did not change significantly in response to a major flood event but some spatial patterns were detected along a broad flood frequency gradient. Soil seed bank samples from frequently flooded sites had higher total germinable seed abundance and a greater abundance of annual monocots than less frequently flooded sites. In contrast, germinable seeds of perennial species belonging to the Poaceae family were most abundant in soil seed bank samples from rarely flooded sites. 3. Similarity between the composition of the soil seed bank and extant vegetation increased following flooding and was greatest in more frequently flooded areas of the floodplain, reflecting the establishment of annual species. The results indicate that persistent soil seed banks enable vegetation in this arid floodplain to respond to unpredictable patterns of flooding and drying. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes a practical technique, tested experimentally, for rehabilitating degraded semiarid landscapes in Australia. This rehabilitation technique is based on the ecological principle that semiarid landscapes are spatially organized as patchy, sourcesink systems; this patchy organization functions to conserve limited water and nutrients within the system. The aim was to rebuild vegetation patchiness, lost through decades of utilization of these landscapes as rangelands. Patches were reconstructed from large tree branches and shrubs obtained locally and placed in elongated piles along contours. These piles of branches were very effective in recreating productive soil patches within the landscape, as described in part I of this study. These new patchy habitats promoted the establishment and growth of perennial grasses. Although the foliage cover of these grasses declined into a drought, which started before the end of the experiment, plant survivorship remained high. This suggests that patches also function as refugia for organisms during droughts. The patches of branches remained robust and functional, even under grazing impacts, although plant growth and survival were significantly higher within an ungrazed paddock than in a grazed paddock. The minimal ecological requirements for the fomation of regular vegetation patterns in semiarid systems have been recently questioned. Against the general belief that a combination of facilitative and competitive interactions is necessary, recent theoretical studies suggest that, under broad conditions, non-local competition among plants alone may induce patterns. In this paper, we review results along this line, presenting a series of models that yield spatial patterns when finite-range competition is the only driving force. A preliminary derivation of this type of model from a more detailed one that considers water-biomass dynamics is also presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
