Abstract: Carbon ligands have long played an important role in organometallic chemistry. However, previous examples of all‐carbon chelating ligands are limited. Herein, we present a novel complex with an eleven‐atom carbon chain as a polydentate chelating ligand. This species was formed by the [2+2+2] cycloaddition reaction of two equivalents of an alkyne with an osmapentalyne that contains the smallest carbyne bond angle (127.9°) ever observed. Density functional calculations revealed that electron‐donating groups play a key role in the stabilization of this polydentate carbon‐chain chelate. This process is also the first [2+2+2] cycloaddition reaction of an alkyne with a late‐transition‐metal carbyne complex. This study not only enriches the chemistry of polydentate carbon‐chain chelates, but also deepens our understanding of the chelating ability of carbon ligands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Highly stable five‐membered metallacycloallenes were synthesized under mild conditions. Calculations revealed that the incorporation of transition‐metal moieties relieves considerable strain and indicates a trend toward ring enlargement in the five‐membered metallacycloallenes. We report herein the first example of the conversion of metallabenzyne II and isometallabenzene III. The osmium hydride vinylidene complex 1 reacts with HCCCH(OEt)2 to give osmabenzyne 3 via isoosmabenzene 2. Compound 3 exhibits high thermal stability in air. Nonetheless, nucleophilic attack at 3 provides isoosmabenzenes 4 a and 4 b, or opens the ring to produce 5 a and 5 b. We propose mechanisms to disclose the intrinsic connection between the six-membered metallacycles, and carry out DFT calculations to rationalize the regioselectivity of the nucleophilic addition reactions. Species with adaptive aromaticity are aromatic in the ground and lowest‐lying triplet excited states and they have normally intermediate singlet‐triplet gaps. Few examples of compounds with adaptive aromaticity are known to date, including 16‐valence‐electron (16e) metallapentalenes. A sweeping search could be conducted to discover new members of this group, but efficient designs with an explicit strategy would facilitate the quest for new members of this elusive family. Density functional theory calculations and aromaticity evaluations have been performed to reveal the nature of triplet‐state aromaticity in 16e metallapentalenes. Our results show that coordination of strong σ‐ or π‐donor ligands helps achieving adaptive aromaticity of 16e metallapentalenes by means of a spin delocalization mechanism. These results have important implications for understanding the unusual properties of the organometallic adaptive aromatics, leading the way to efficient design of new compounds with tunable singlet‐triplet gaps. Aromaticity, an old but still fantastic topic, has long attracted considerable interest of chemists. Generally, π aromaticity is described by π-electron delocalization in closed circuits of unsaturated compounds whereas σ-electron delocalization in saturated rings leads to σ aromaticity. Interestingly, our recent study shows that σ aromaticity can be dominating in an unsaturated three-membered ring (3MR) of cyclopropaosmapentalene. An interesting question is raised: Can the s aromaticity, which is dominant in the unsaturated 3MR, be extended to other cyclopropametallapentalenes? If so, how could the metal centers, ligands, and substituents affect the σ aromaticity? Here, we report a thorough theoretical study on these issues. The nucleus-independent chemical shift calculations and the anisotropy of the current-induced density plots reveal the dominant σ aromaticity in these unsaturated 3MRs. In addition, our calculations show that substituents on the 3MRs have significant effects on the s aromaticity, whereas the ligand effect is particularly small. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aromaticity is one of the most basic concepts in organic chemistry. The planar Möbius aromatic metallapentalynes and metallapentalenes have attracted considerable attention in the past few years. However, the aromaticity of metallapentalenes containing heteroatoms (such as B, N, and O), termed as hetero‐metallapentalenes, is rarely studied. Herein, the stability and aromaticity of a series of hetero‐metallapentalenes are theoretically investigated. The results reveal lower aromaticity in metallaborapentalene, comparable aromaticity in metallazapentalene, and nonaromaticity in metalloxapentalene relative to that of metallapentalene. Moreover, the effect of Lewis bases on the aromaticity and stability of metallaborapentalene is discussed. Abstract: Isolation of the simplest 4π three‐membered heterocycles (1H‐azirine, oxirene, thiirene, and selenirene) remains a big challenge due to their π‐antiaromaticity and significant ring strain. Here we demonstrate that the incorporation of a transition‐metal fragment could stabilize the antiaromatic selenirene and pentalene frameworks simultaneously by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Experimental verification leads to the Se‐containing metallapolycycles, osmapentaloselenirenes, with remarkable thermal stability. The osmaselenirene unit in the metallapolycycle is determined to be the first example of σ‐aromaticity dominating in an unsaturated Se‐containing ring. Our results not only highlight a remarkable stabilization by the transition‐metal but also widen the scope of σ‐aromaticity in unsaturated rings, which is traditionally reserved for the domain of π‐aromaticity. Polycyclic complexes containing a bridgehead transition metal are interesting species because the transition metal is shared by all the rings simultaneously. In this study, we present a novel osmium-bridgehead system with three fused five-membered rings. This novel framework can be viewed as a 10-atom carbon chain coordinating to the osmium center. In sharp contrast to the nonplanar organic analogue, this unique metallacycle exhibits good planarity, which was unambiguously verified by means of X-ray diffraction. Interestingly, preliminary DFT calculations show that the aromaticity in the three 5MRs of these osmatricycles can be easily tuned by the ligand substitution. Metalla-aromatics are attractive species because they exhibit the properties of both organometallics and aromatics. Reported metal-bridged polycyclic aromatic complexes, as well as Möbius aromatic species, are still rare. Herein, we present the construction of two new metal-bridged polycyclic aromatic frameworks, α-metallapentalenofurans and lactone-fused metallapentalynes, by the reactions of osmapentalyne with terminal aryl alkynes in the presence of H2O or HBF4/H2O, respectively. DFT calculations show that the α-metallapentalenofurans possess rare planar Craig-type Möbius aromaticity derived from the 11-center-12-electron dπ-pπ π-conjugation. Antiaromatic species are substantially less thermodynamically stable than aromatic moieties. Herein, we report the stabilization of two classical antiaromatic frameworks, cyclobutadiene and pentalene, by introducing one metal fragment through the first [2+2] cycloaddition reaction of a late-transition-metal carbyne with alkynes. Experimental observations and theoretical calculations reveal that the metal fragment decreases the antiaromaticity in cyclobutadiene and pentalene simultaneously, leading to air- and moisture-stable products. These molecules show broad absorption from the UV to the near-IR region, resulting in photoacoustic and photothermal effects for metalla-aromatic compounds for the first time. These results will encourage further efforts into the exploration of organometallic compounds for photoacoustic-imaging-guided photothermal therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In general, aromaticity can be clarified as π- and σ-aromaticity according to the type of electrons with major contributions. The traditional π-aromaticity generally describes the π-conjugation in fully unsaturated rings whereas σ-aromaticity may stabilize fully saturated rings with delocalization caused by σ-electron conjugation. Reported herein is an example of σ-aromaticity in an unsaturated three-membered ring (3 MR), which is supported by experimental observations and theoretical calculations. Specifically, when the 3 MR in cyclopropaosmapentalene is cleaved by ethane through two isodesmic reactions, both of them are highly endothermic (+29.7 and +35.0 kcal mol−1). These positive values are in sharp contrast to the expected exothermicity, thus indicating aromaticity in the 3 MR. Further nucleus-independent chemical shift and anisotropy of the current-induced density calculations reveal the nature of σ-aromaticity in the unsaturated 3 MR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
