This paper presents a brief discussion about Work psychology, in Brazil, and its interfaces with the Work clinics and the Worker's health field. Our starting point is the set of papers presented by Brazilian researchers in the "France-Latin America Symposium". A methodological cut has allowed us to elect these disciplinary fields by reading titles, reviews and paper references. The texts showed a significant convergence between the following themes: social and critical orientation, keeping interest in the working subjects ; the complexity and singularities that lead their work experiences ; the processes of constitution, the psychic and political-social commitments of these workers. We believe that a synthesis of the researches presented in this colloquium reflects the current moment of the Work Psychology in Brazil, in its connections with the Work Clinics and the Worker's Health. We investigated the effects of readymade versus self‐generated graphic organizers (GOs) on learning, comparing the performances of undergraduates (N = 81) tasked with learning a multimedia document. This document was either presented on its own (control group), with a readymade GO, or with a blank GO that students had to fill in either before or during the learning of the document. In line with previous research, adding a readymade GO increased students' memorization and transfer scores, compared with controls. By displaying the main ideas in the text and their hierarchical relations, GOs act as visual aids to learning. Results showed that self‐generating a GO was no more beneficial than viewing a readymade GO when students were placed in a dual‐task situation (generation + learning). However, when the students' information processing was guided by sequencing these tasks (generation then learning), they outperformed the control and readymade groups on memorization and comprehension. Professional road cycling in general and the Tour de France in particular have a tarnished reputation as far as the illegal and illegitimate use of performance enhancing drugs is concerned. Numerous positive dope tests each year are, for some, testament to the insidious corruptness of cyclists, their entourage, and the practice community. For others, it attests to both the strength of the commitment to drug free sport and the rigor of the processes implemented to achieve it. In a recent interview on British TV, Mark Cavendish a winner of 6 Tour de France stages in 2009, claimed that no other sport was as committed to clean competition as road cycling1. Although standard antidoping arguments have been presented, discussed, and widely rehearsed in the literature, consensus on the matter has not been reached neither in the community of sports ethicists nor, as I will suggest, in the practice community of elite road cyclists. In this paper I explore a possible defense of doping in elite cycling which requires us to think carefully about common assumptions about both the nature and purpose of doping. This paper shows how the Rao-Stirling diversity index may be extensively used for positioning and comparing institutions interdisciplinary practices. Two decompositions of this index make it possible to explore different components of the diversity of the cited references in a corpus of publications. The paper aims at demonstrating how these bibliometric tools can be used for comparing institutions in a research field by highlighting collaboration orientations and institutions strategies. To make the method available and easy to use for indicator users, this paper first recalls a previous result on the decomposition of the Rao-Stirling index into multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity components, then proposes a new decomposition to further explore the profile of research collaborations and finally presents an application to Neuroscience research in French universities. Aim: To analyse the health care usage of individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) as a function of age and ambulatory status.Method: In total, 970 self-administered questionnaires relating to health care usage were sent, via a clinical network of professionals and institutions, to children and adults with CP in Brittany, France. Frequency of use of different aspects of health care were analysed as a function of age and ambulatory status. Multivariate logistic regression evaluated differences in the frequency of each health care type with age; the transition from childhood to adulthood was specifically analysed.Results: The response rate was 53% (282 adults, 230 children). Use of medication (particularly psychotropic and analgesic) increased with age, while physical-types of health care (rehabilitation, physical medicine and rehabilitation follow-up, and equipment) decreased with age, independently of ambulatory status. Use of other treatments, such as botulinum toxin injections, was not influenced by age. The provision of rehabilitation was particularly affected by the period of transition.Interpretation: Although health care needs change naturally in adulthood, the large decrease in usage of specific types of rehabilitation after the transition to adulthood suggested individuals had difficulty accessing this type of health care after childhood. Abstract: This paper discusses the nature and aftermath of the May 1968 uprising in France, treating it as symbolically representative of the whole radical movement of the 1960s and 1970s. It explores how that movement and its failure to achieve its goals have affected the psychological atmosphere in which we conduct therapy, and also how some of the ideas which were developed might influence our practice. This paper addresses the working practices of a mobile mental health outreach team in a large French city, one that ‘targets’ homeless people with severe psychiatric disorders who are considered ‘hard to reach’ by the public health authorities and medical services. Analysis of the team's work – where acts of curing and caring are closely tied – reveals the importance of moving beyond a polarized vision ofcureandcare. The paper departs from much of the literature on the medicalization of social problems by arguing that medicalization is not only a means of social control, but has ethical value as well. In examining the practices of frontline health workers, it aims to show that integrating the methods and theoretical approaches of social work in medical practice is necessary to address the specific problems of homeless people, to enable health professionals to pursue medical cures, and to challenge the shortcomings of public policy. Today the name and contributions of Théodule Ribot (1839-1916) are little remembered. The centenary of Ribot's passing is thus a unique occasion to honor him as one of the great figures of psychology. Not only did he play a major role in the development of psychology in France, but he also became a major international figure of psychology at the turn of the 20th century. Since that time, his work has deeply influenced generations of psychologists. At the international level, 1. he can be credited as having held in France the first Chair entitled “Experimental Psychology” (1885: Sorbonne; 1888: Collège de France); 2. he was the acting president of the very first International Congress of Physiological Psychology, held in Paris in 1889; 3. his reputation as a psychological researcher wentmuch beyond the French borders, having introduced the pathological method in psychology, and most of his books were translated, at the time, in English and other languages (Spanish, German, Italian, etc.). Reminiscence, or the process of thinking or telling about past experience, is thought to serve social, instrumental, and integrative functions. Our paper investigated these functions in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Twenty-six participants with a clinical diagnosis of probable mild AD and 28 control older adults filled in a French adaptation of the Reminiscence Functions Scale. Eight specific functions were assessed: death preparation, identity, problem-solving, teaching/informing, conversation, boredom reduction, bitterness revival, and intimacy maintenance. Both older adults and AD participants reported reminiscence about their past to prepare themselves for the idea of their own mortality. All participants also reported reminiscence "to reduce boredom" and "for something to do". However, reminiscence for death preparation and boredom reduction was reported more by AD participants than by older adults. In all participants, the death preparation function of reminiscence was significantly correlated with depression. Individuals with AD seem to reminiscence to cope with thoughts about their own mortality. This helps them to see that they have lived a full life and can therefore accept death more calmly. Individuals with AD also seem to cope with boredom by using reminiscence, probably as a tool to fill time or simply to create ease of conversation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this paper is to understand how the public's beliefs in five countries may change as more families have direct experience with Alzheimer's disease. The data are derived from a questionnaire survey conducted by telephone (landline and cell) with 2678 randomly selected adults in France, Germany, Poland, Spain, and the United States. The paper analyzes the beliefs and anticipated behavior of those in each country who report having had a family member with Alzheimer's disease versus those who do not. In one or more countries, differences were found between the two groups in their concern about getting Alzheimer's disease, knowledge that the disease is fatal, awareness of certain symptoms, and support for increased public spending. The results suggest that as more people have experience with a family member who has Alzheimer's disease, the public will generally become more concerned about Alzheimer's disease and more likely to recognize that Alzheimer's disease is a fatal disease. The findings suggest that other beliefs may only be affected if there are future major educational campaigns about the disease. The publics in individual countries, with differing cultures and health systems, are likely to respond in different ways as more families have experience with Alzheimer's disease. In this paper, the borderlands, in the context of the psychological perception of frontiers, were presented. The common relationships between different nationalities living in border twin towns was a principal point of analysis. During the investigation two main research questions were asked: Is a frontier a barrier or a bridge in the common relationships between nationalities living on both sides of the borderline? and Does the trans-border casual social integration stimulate openness to neighbours? The study was conducted in two double towns: la Jonquera (Els límits) - Le Perthus at the Spanish-French border and Słubice - Frankfurt-am-Oder at the Polish-German border. The data were gathered from surveys by questioning locals and visitors during street polling. The design of the questionnaire included three main groups of questions relating to: 1) the perception of the borderline and the role of the border twin towns, 2) the attitude towards neighbours and identification with the borderlands, and 3) the future of the borderline in the context of the twin towns existence and cross-border linkages. The results showed that the historical circumstances and cultural background play a crucial role in the current bilateral interrelations between nations sharing the common space of the twin towns. These two aspects of the borderland have an influence on the psychological perception of the border that creates mental boundaries in local societies. However, as the results proved, the necessity of living together pushed locals to be more open-minded, which as a consequence supported the establishment of social bonds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

How can one assess the quality of life of older people – particularly those with Alzheimer's disease – from the point of view of their opportunities to do valued things in life? This paper is an attempt to answer this question using as a theoretical framework the capability approach. We use data collected on 8841 individuals above 60 living in France (the 2008 Disability and Health Household Survey) and propose a latent variable modelling framework to analyse their capabilities in two fundamental dimensions: freedom to perform self-care activities and freedom to participate in the life of the household . Our results show that living as a couple, having children, being mobile and having access to local shops, health facilities and public services enhance both capabilities. Age, household size and male gender (for one of the two capabilities) act as impediments while the number of impairments reduces both capabilities. We find that people with Alzheimer's disease have a lower level and a smaller range of capabilities (freedom) when compared to those without, even when the latter have several impairments. Background: The high frequency of suicide attempts during adolescence is a serious public health concern. In particular attempts leading to hospitalization, often due to their severity, require careful consideration.Methods: Participants were drawn from a large adolescent general population survey conducted by the French Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction and the National Service department. The final sample included 39,542 adolescents aged 17. Participants were surveyed during the "one-day session of civic and military information" using a pen and paper self-administered questionnaire.Results: Depressive symptoms, family socio-economic status, familial situation, relationship with parents, school situation, substance use and body image were significant independent predictors of lifetime suicide attempts. Among suicide attempts, hospitalization was independently predicted by daily smoking in both genders, school dropout, grade repetition, absence of relationship with the mother, regular cannabis smoking and lifetime other illicit drug use in girls.Limitations: The main limitation of the present study is the absence of a thorough assessment of psychiatric disorders, depressive symptomatology being the only indicator of mental health status at the time of the survey. Second, the survey was cross-sectional thus limiting the interpretation of the findings.Conclusions: The variables associated with suicide attempts and among them, those associated with hospitalization should be used to identify and provide additional services to adolescents at risk for serious suicidal behavior. This paper analyses the use of the concept of ‘barebacking’ as a risk category in the discourses of French gay men. It discusses how the rise and spread of the term barebacking contributes to reframing gay men’s personal experiences of HIV prevention and their sense of belonging (or a lack thereof) to a gay community. The study is based on 30 qualitative interviews with French gay men conducted between 2005 and 2008. An import from the USA, the term barebacking emerged publicly in France in the late-1990s and was first used to describe intentionally unprotected sexual practices. Debates surrounding this risk category were marked by violent controversy over its use and its definition among HIV prevention actors. There remains a general lack of consensus on the definition of the term, despite its use by activists, in porn culture and in the daily discourses of gay men. This literature review explores how the prison climate influences the mental health of adult prisoners. A thematic synthesis approach was used to elicit data relating to the aspects of the prison climate, which influence the mental health of prisoners. Four primary themes emerged from the synthesis: social, emotional, organizational and physical aspects. Prisoners perceive the prison climate to have a negative influence upon their mental health. However, perceived positively, prison was regarded as a place of respite, which afforded structure and an opportunity to access health services. There is limited research available specifically exploring the potential impact of the prison climate upon those from black and ethnic minorities groups. Nurses must recognize the aspects of the prison environment that may impact upon the mental health of prisoners and demonstrate innovation and imagination in their application of interventions. Career decisions are amongst the most important we make. Unsurprisingly, much published research exists on this particular aspect of career behaviour. However, the overwhelming majority of studies have been carried out on young people making initial career decisions. This paper extends our understanding by examining how mid-career adults in three European countries (Denmark, France and Italy) actually make career decisions. Characteristic patterns of behaviour recur when individuals approach points of transition or of crisis; each of these transitioning styles is illustrated by an iconic case. Emergent findings support the growing body of evidence that challenges the dominant policy and practice orthodoxy, which places rationality at the centre of the process, by recognising the importance of emotion and context. This paper focusses on coping strategies employed by children and adolescents with diagnosed short stature, assesses the impact of socio-demographic and clinical characteristics on coping, examines the relationship between coping and health related quality of life (QoL) and investigates the role of coping strategies in mediating the relationship between height and QoL. Coping with a disease (CODI) and quality of life in short stature youth (QoLISSY-QoL) questionnaires were completed by 137 short-statured children and adolescents between 8 and 18 years, participating in the crosssectional European QoLISSY study. Clinical and socio-demographic data were collected to examine differences in coping via variance and regression analyses, associations between CODI and QoLISSY were inspected using correlation and mediation analyses. Most frequently employed coping strategies in the CODI were 'Acceptance' and 'Wishful Thinking', with 'Emotional Reaction' used least. Significant effects of age, diagnosis and treatment status on coping strategies were detected. CODI scales 'Acceptance' and 'Distance' were associated with higher QoLISSY-QoL scores, 'Emotional Reaction' and 'Wishful Thinking' with lower scores. Coping strategies predicted 60 % of the QoLISSY-QoL variance. Relationships between height deviation and QoLISSY-QoL were mediated by the coping strategies of 'Wishful Thinking' and 'Distance'. Findings suggest that coping efforts vary with socio-demographic and clinical characteristics, that protective coping strategies in terms of QoL can be identified and that coping mediates the relationship between short stature and QoL. Mental health evaluation within a legal setting is widely seen as a power to judge. The aim of this paper is to challenge this current thesis, which was popularised by Michel Foucault, who encapsulated the notion in a brief sentence: "The sordid business of punishing is thus converted into the fine profession of curing" (Foucault, 2003: 23). On the basis of an ethnography of a French district court (between September 2008 and May 2009, n = 60 trials) including interviews with judges (n = 10) and psychiatrists (n = 10), we study the everyday penal treatment of sexual offenders using psychiatric reports. Our findings show how (i.) the expectations of the judges select the psychiatrists' skills (based on the following criteria for their reports: accessibility of knowledge, singularization and individualization of content) and (ii.) reframe the psychiatric report as a moral tool. The clinical reasoning of forensic psychiatrists in their reports offer moral affordances due to their clinical caution regarding the risk of recidivism (therapeutic and criminological reversal, moral prevention). Both the judges' evaluation and the psychiatrists' clinical authority are shaped by a moral economy of dangerousness, which eclipses the idea of lack of criminal responsibility. The arrival of Indian sipahis (or ‘sepoys’) to fight alongside soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force in France in October 1914 was both a victory and a source of concern for the British Raj. It proved to be the zenith of martial race fantasies that had been carefully codified from the 1890s, and birthed fears about the effects that Europe and the rapidly intensifying conflict on the Western Front would have upon the ‘best black troops in the world’. The situation resulted in the appointment of a special military censor to examine the letters sent to and from Indian sipahis and compile a fortnightly summary of Indian letters from France for the duration of the First World War. This paper investigates a portion of the letters contained in these reports. More particularly, it investigates the life of a single chain letter and the effect its chiliastic message had upon Muslim troops of the Indian Army during the First World War. As the letter was read, rewritten, and passed on, it served as a rejoinder to missionary efforts by the Ahmadiyya Movement, reinterpreted as a call for soldiers to purify their own bodies and oppose interracial sexual relationships, before, finally, being used as a critique of the British war effort against the Ottoman empire. French institutions, political culture and history have favoured a very abstract conception of representation: MPs are expected to embody collectively the French Nation, but little is known about citizens’ concrete views on representation. In this paper, data gathered through a citizen mass survey are used. To overcome the usual abstract considerations on representation, respondents were asked their opinion on an MP who would endorse amendments proposed by an interest group. In the questionnaire, two features were changed randomly: the MP's political leaning and the type of interest group. It is shown by means of an original experiment that the ‘general’ conception representation has disappeared from citizens’ attitudes: despite the enduring legitimacy of the general will approach in the public sphere, French citizens appear to promote a conception of representation close to the Madisonian views on pluralism involving a strong attachment to the logic of territorial electoral linkage. This paper describes the founding of the Revue Philosophique de la France et de l 'Étranger by Théodule Ribot (1830--1916) in 1876. Like the English journal Mind, which was launched the same year, this journal introduced the new scientific psychology to France. Its founding increased Ribot's scientific credibility in psychology and led him to be regarded as the most distinguished French specialist in the field. First, we review the state of French philosophy at the time of the journal's founding, focusing on the three main French schools of thought in philosophy and on their relations with psychology. Second, after analyzing the preface written by Ribot in the first issue of the Revue Philosophique, we examine how the journal was received in French philosophical circles. Outside of its national boundaries, studies regarding twentieth-century Italian occultism have been sorely lacking. While the role of occultism and occultists in nations such as England, Germany, France and the United States has been studied in detail, the events and main characters that influenced the esoteric circles in early twentieth-century Italy have been mostly neglected or relegated to very cursory enquiries. It is my intention in this paper to focus on the theme of a Pagan new beginning for the newly reunited Italy, first sketching a historical portrayal of the influence that the idea of Ancient Rome had on both artists and occultists, then utilizing recently discovered archival material, to focus on poet and playwright Roggero Musmeci Ferrari Bravo and his tragedy on the birth of Rome, Rumon Sacrae Romae Origines, viewing the play as an attempt to mass-initiate the audience to the alleged palingenetic virtues of Roman traditionalism, in view of a new Italian renaissance [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In treating illness and suffering, the Akan anti-witchcraft shrine is often presented as a model of unchanging, tightly bounded and antiquated ideals. This fails to acknowledge the extensive repertoire of Ghanaian witchcraft discourses and contemporary divinatory practices uncovered at Akan anti-witchcraft shrines. This paper analyses how one of the most popular Akan anti-witchcraft shrine in Europe, in an eastern banlieue of Paris, diagnoses the seemingly common and innocuous coughs and colds suffered by recently arrived, unskilled female Ghanaian migrants as something more socially and economically malignant, witchcraft. Successful treatment combines divinatory techniques, paracetamol medicines and positive thinking in order to empower clients and present them with the possibility of new social and gainful employment prospects. The way that anthropologists understand the Oedipus complex, in particular, is a good example of how they understand psychoanalysis in general. Indeed, it has crystallized a set of reactions marked by ignorance, misunderstanding, distortion and screening out and at the same time has provoked suspicion among anthropologists as to psychoanalysis, according to the preconceptions of the various schools of thought and authors implied, and this from the very first contacts up to nowadays. In what way did the psychoanalysts contribute to this and what representation did they, in turn, elaborate of anthropology? The purpose of this paper is to expose the epistemological and historical conditions of the emergence of this debate, and then to develop it by following chronology up to the 1950s and 1960s, while differentiating three major cultural areas, Great Britain, the USA and France, in order to get a clearer picture. From that point on, we will try to diversify our inquiry and to formulate some interpretative hypotheses. In particular, we think that a traumatic event may have inaugurated and organized the history of the relationship between the two disciplines, producing a situation of acculturation with multiple impacts, if we identify them with two cultures coming into contact: what is at stake here is Totem and Taboo in which Freud carries through the first major psychoanalytical approach of the interpretation of ethnographic facts, that leads him to transplant the universality of the Oedipus complex to the very root of the first social institutions and to pinpoint the presence of unconscious processes in their genesis. This article is based on the analysis of empirical data collected during eight months of fieldwork-in the provincial town of Kondopoga, St. Petersburg, and Nizhny Novgorod. During this period, 56 individual and 16 collective interviews were conducted. The paper provides the main result of this comparative research on the urban riots in France and Russia, which is related to the media. More precisely, the importance of "global" factors linked to collective violence in these urban spaces was observed. The phenomenon could be called "global circulation of national imaginaries." Indeed, it was detected that the riots of November 2005 in France, due to their widespread international media coverage, became a source for various interpretations for Russian (more or less organized) ultranationalists. Abstract: Morality is one of the most important elements of social actions, specifically in medical settings. Unfortunately, in social science, morality is often undertheorized and can lead to moralism. The aim of the paper is to test the “moral economy theory” which highlights the link between some local moral evaluations and a political context. We focus on “treatment” as therapeutic tool and as moral regulation of patients in a French remand centre. On the basis of an ethnography of forms of care for prisoners (2009–2010), and semi-directed interviews with working mental health professionals (n = 10), we analyse their engagement and their moral expectations of the prisoners under their care. Firstly, we show how prisoners are selected and then converted into patients deserving of attention (expectations of honesty, sincerity and compliance). Secondly, we show how these patients are divided into three main intervention categories, in which the treatment is both therapeutic and moral (expectations of responsibility, recognition of guilt, and self-esteem). René Sudre was an active metapsychist (parapsychologist) from the very beginning of the Institut Métapsychique International (IMI) of Paris. He was well know for his various chronicles on paranormal phenomena, especially his obsession with separating metapsychic research from spiritism. A brief biographical sketch is given that also describes his careers as a journalist and populariser of science. For forty years Sudre pursued a naturalist agenda: examining the scientific enigmas of the 20th century that were the subject-matter of parapsychology. At first he played a key role in the IMI (1921-1926), but he had to leave this metapsychic research foundation after a clash. He went on to have a distinguished international career while remaining one of the most prominent of French psychists. In 1956, he published his Traité de Parapsychologie, which was translated into several langu~ges and is still an impressive textbook. He made valuable contributions to parapsychology on both experimental and theoretical issues; for instance, with his model of prosopopesis-metagnomy, which helped him to counter spiritualist interpretations of the phenomena. Since the second part of the 19th century, there has been a great increase in the number of international scientific congresses, and they appear a necessary step in the maturation of knowledge. The first person to explicitly suggest the necessity of an international congress of psychology was Julian Ochorowicz (1850–1917), who was considered the founder of Polish psychology. In 1881 he sent an article to Théodule Ribot, editor of Revue Philosophique de la France et de l'Étranger , entitled “Project of an International Congress of Psychology,” which was published in Ribot's journal. In it he described the dispersed state of psychology in 1881 and the previous 50 years, including 12 subdisciplines ranging from psychophysics to the psychology of art, and how it should aim for unification. He suggested collective efforts to progress rapidly, with widespread collaboration and the continuous exchange of observations, information, and experiments. Having international congresses would constitute a forum for such exchanges, and in his article he outlined the steps that should be taken for putting together the first international congress of psychology. The proposal was quite extensive and fanciful, making Ribot somewhat doubt its realizability. Nevertheless, the first international psychology congress took place in Paris in 1889, 8 years after the publication of Ochorowicz's article. This quick development could be attributed to the creation of the psychology societies, one of the first being La Société de Psychologie Physiologique , which was created in France in 1885. The creation of this society also contributed to psychology being recognized as a scientific domain. In line with this, the final programme of the congress was less extensive than that proposed in Ochorowicz's article, focusing on physiological aspects and ignoring the philosophical ones. In the present paper, the historical context of Ochorowicz's article is outlined, followed by a translation of his article. According to traditional French historiography, French scientific psychology was born when it differentiated itself from philosophy. This split between the two disciplines is attributed to Taine and Ribot, who, consequently, are considered to be the “founding fathers” of French psychology. In this paper we shall examine the case of Pierre Janet, who, at the turn of the century, was recognized worldwide as the most important French psychologist. It is generally said that he was the follower of Ribot and of Charcot. However, he was also Paul Janet's nephew. Paul Janet was a very well known and influential philosopher of the so-called French “spiritualistic” school, for which psychology was central to philosophy. In 1889, Pierre Janet published his doctoral dissertation, L'Automatisme psychologique, which was immediately considered to be a classic in psychology. We shall argue that this book is as much indebted to the old spiritualistic psychology, which claimed the substantial unity of the self, as to the new psychology at the time, which questioned it. With Pierre Janet, the split between psychology and philosophy in France was reconsidered. Recurrent genital herpes is an incurable disease that may give rise to considerable psychological disturbance. This paper describes the impact of the disease on quality of life in a French population. The population study was also used to provide additional validation data for the French version of the RGHQoL (the Recurrent Genital Herpes Quality of Life) measure. The content of the RGHQoL was derived from patient interviews in the UK. The measure was then developed and tested simultaneously in several countries, including France. Statements in the measure were translated into French by a bilingual panel and then by a lay panel. Field-testing in France took place with 15 patients who judged the instrument to be relevant and easy to complete. The final version of the questionnaire was assessed for reliability and construct validity. The measure was found to have good test-retest reliability (0.94) and internal consistency (0.93) as assessed by Cronbach's alpha. The French RGHQoL was then used with 150 herpes patients obtained from a general population sample. A majority of the respondents completed all questions, indicating a high level of acceptability. Quality of life was found to be lowest in the under 25-year-olds and in those respondents who were most psychologically and sexually disturbed by their outbreaks and found it difficult to discuss the problem with their partner. It is concluded that the French version of the RGHQoL is an acceptable, reliable and valid instrument and that the measure provides valuable information about the impact of the disease. Background: In this paper, we report the results of risk attitudes elicitation of a French general practitioners national representative sample (N=1568).Methods: Willingness to take risks in four different domains (daily life, financial matters, own health and patient health) was collected through a large-scale telephone interview of GPs using self-reported 11-point Likert scale questions.Results: We uncover some specificities of the GPs population regarding their attitudes towards risk. In particular, we detect an important positive gap between their willingness to take risks in the domain of their own health and in the domain of the heath of their patients. This "patient-regarding" risk aversion is discussed with respect to its important consequences regarding medical behavior bias.Conclusions: We confirm the self-other discrepancy found in the medical literature on physicians' behaviors and emphasize the utility of the study and measures of personality traits such as "risk attitudes" for the medical professions and for the population they address.
