Travelers often change their behavior in reaction to adverse weather conditions. This paper seeks to conduct an empirical evaluation of both ordered and unordered discrete outcome frameworks for examining the adaptive behavior decisions of intercity travelers and investigate the varying effects of explanatory factors on different alternatives of adaptive behavior during adverse weather. The data from 754 respondents in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration, China are collected by a two-phase survey instrument. To capture the unobserved heterogeneity more effectively, this paper develops three advanced models to investigate the variations in intercity travel behavior during adverse weather. Four alternative adaptive behaviors are determined as outcome variables: maintaining original travel plans, changing only the intercity mode, changing the departure date, and canceling the trip, while potential influencing factors including adverse weather conditions, trip-related characteristics, individual attributes and urban agglomeration attributes are statistically assessed. The results indicate that the unordered models consistently outperform their ordered counterparts, and the incorporation of multilayer heterogeneity enhances the model fit. Furthermore, significant factors and their coefficient values vary across the different adaptive behavior alternatives. Intercity travelers demonstrate a higher probability of changing departure dates or canceling trips during snowy and windy days compared to rainy and foggy days. Trains exhibit higher flexibility and reliability during adverse weather, and access attributes significantly affect intercity travel adaptive behavior. Additionally, the analysis of individual and urban agglomeration attributes uncovers variations in adaptive behavior among individuals and cities. Urbanization and the release of carbon emission are two significant features of contemporary economic and social progress in China. However, there are few studies that consider how urbanization policy goals affect carbon emission. This paper aims to study the nonlinear effects of urbanization policy goals on carbon emission in 13 cities of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. In this paper, a multi-dimensional spatial disturbance grey model is proposed. Based on matrix perturbation theory, this paper explores the spatial perturbation bounds of the novel model and verifies that the spatial property of the model is consistent with the viewpoint of the First Law of Geography. Then, the novel model is used to predict the urban carbon emission under different urbanization policy goal scenarios. The results showed that the novel model has spatial regional correlation in spatial region prediction. With the development of urbanization level, carbon emissions show a downward trend in more than 50% of cities from 2022 to 2025. In addition, the improvement of urbanization policy goals will promote the carbon peak time of most cities. The carbon emission intensity will exhibit an inverted U-shaped trend distribution in space. To examine the long-run trend of China's energy efficiency, this paper employs a distribution dynamics approach to analyze the convergence of total-factor energy efficiency (TFEE) across 286 Chinese cities between 2002 and 2014. The result suggests the existence of convergence, which comes more from the efficiency declines in the high TFEE cities rather than the efficiency gains in the low TFEE cities. Despite the fact that a few cities have performed well in energy efficiency, the majority of cities have converged to a low-efficiency point. Further analyses show that the inefficiency was attributed to inefficient energy use in small- and medium-sized cities. Governments have implemented many regulations to solve traffic congestion and pollutant emissions. Traffic restriction (TR) policy is the most common and widely used traffic regulation. However, it is difficult to alleviate traffic pollution through TR policies. Only a few studies focus on TR policies in multiple cities. In this paper, we classify traffic restrictions by geographical factors and evaluate the impact of different policies based on PSM-DID first. Then, we classify the mixed restrictions and test their effects on air pollution. The results show that TR policy improves air quality regardless of the season. Moreover, the effect of TR policy is not affected by the superposition of the type of traffic restriction. For cities implementing the same TR policy, geographic factors can lead to different outcomes. The identification of the technical cooperation mode in the field of hydrogen energy is of great importance in guiding technological innovation. Based on the social network analysis (SNA) and spatial network method, this paper constructs the technical cooperation graph of China's industry-university-research (IUR) tripartites in the field of hydrogen technology. Based on the performed graphs, it shows the game and evolution of hydrogen technology innovation in three stages, respectively 2000–2010, 2011–2015 and 2016–2019. Meanwhile, this paper calculates the changes of network indicators and found that: (1) the network density showed a downward trend, from the initial 0.062 to 0.003. (2) The degree centrality of the network decreased from 14.7% to 5.7%. (3) The average path length and clustering coefficient indicate that the internal connections within the network were relatively close from 2000 to 2010, and had small-world characteristics. From 2016 to 2019, although the clustering coefficient increased, the average path length also increased significantly, indicating that the internal connections of the network did not become closer. From the network characteristics, the collaborative innovation network of China's hydrogen energy industry continues to expand in scale and scope, and the cooperation relationship is stable. However, it shows the characteristics of low network density and loose cooperation relationship, gradually developing into a scale-free network. Observation-based method for O 3 formation sensitivity research is an important tool to analyze the causes of ground-level O 3 pollution, which has broad application potentials in determining the O 3 pollution formation mechanism and developing prevention and control strategies. This paper outlined the development history of research on O 3 formation sensitivity based on observational methods, described the principle and applicability of the methodology, summarized the relative application results in China and provided recommendations on the prevention and control of O 3 pollution in China based on relevant study results, and finally pointed out the shortcomings and future development prospects in this field in China. The overview study showed that the O 3 formation sensitivity in some urban areas in China in recent years presented a gradual shifting tendency from the VOC-limited regime to the transition regime or the NO x -limited regime due to the implementation of the O 3 precursors emission reduction policies; O 3 pollution control strategies and precursor control countermeasures should be formulated based on local conditions and the dynamic control capability of O 3 pollution control measures should be improved. There are still some current deficiencies in the study field in China. Therefore, it is recommended that a stereoscopic monitoring network for atmospheric photochemical components should be further constructed and improved; the atmospheric chemical mechanisms should be vigorously developed, and standardized methods for determining the O 3 formation sensitivity should be established in China in the near future. Improving total factor productivity is an important driving force for achieving high-quality economic development. Based on the panel data of 256 cities in China from 2009 to 2019, this paper investigates the effect of transportation and information infrastructure on urban productivity. The results show that transportation and information infrastructure promote urban productivity, and the effect in eastern regions and megacities is more obvious. The mechanism analysis shows that transportation infrastructure enhances urban productivity by promoting economic agglomeration, and information infrastructure enhances urban productivity by promoting labor mobility, economic agglomeration, financial agglomeration and industrial agglomeration. The spatial spillover effect shows positive spatial autocorrelation of urban productivity. Transportation and information infrastructure have significant positive spatial spillover effects on urban productivity. In contrast to previous studies by using provincial data, this paper employs city-level data from 260 prefecture-level cities in China between 2011 and 2020 to explore the underlying mechanism of how digital inclusive finance promotes the realisation of common prosperity in China. In addition, this paper incorporates financial deepening theory, financial exclusion theory, long tail theory, digital divide theory and technology driven theory to examine the proposed research questions. Through system-GMM and IV estimation, the results show that common prosperity is composed of development, sharing and sustainability. The high level of the weight of the first-level indicators for development and sharing reflects the importance of "prosperity" and "sharing" in common prosperity. Digital inclusive finance plays a significant role in promoting the development of urban common prosperity, with a more pronounced effect in the Eastern cities when compared to the Central and Western cities. In addition, digital inclusive finance is found to promote urban common prosperity by overcoming the digital divide and by improving the activity of urban innovation and entrepreneurship. This paper examines how local industrial structure changes after bureaucratic transfers across Chinese cities. Utilizing firm-level data within the manufacturing sector, we show a positive and significant effect of transferred local leaders on the industrial similarity between cities connected by them, and this response arises 3 years after the transfers. However, when transferring between cities with notable disparities in resource endowments, local leaders induce diminished industrial similarity among connected cities. Our mechanism analyses then find that, after transferred leaders arrive, new superstar firms are more likely to be attracted to their current jurisdictions and new industries in which their previous jurisdictions have already superstar firms tend to be developed in the current jurisdictions, thus making the industrial structure between the connected cities more similar. Challenges to social, economic, and environmental sustainability are global in scale, yet sustainable development policies must be implemented locally. There has been a tendency for sustainable urbanism projects to engage in the conspicuous sustainability of spatially bounded and highly visible sustainability achievements, rather than spatially expansive, long-term achievements. China's complex system of multilevel governance encourages policy experimentation, but it is also frequently productive of entrepreneurial urbanism and intercity competition. This paper analyses spatial planning documents concerning Hengqin (Zhuhai Municipality, Guangdong Province), an island adjacent to Macao SAR, to show how the ambitions for a new-build district's contributions to sustainable development have become more spatially expansive and ambitious over time. This has occurred alongside changes in project leadership (from city, to provincial, to central government leadership) as well as a deepening awareness of the Greater Bay Area as a region for crossborder policymaking. In the domain of global socio-economic dynamics, the pivotal role of food production (FP) cannot be overstated. It constitutes the bedrock of fundamental human necessities while being inexorably linked with critical aspects such as economic expansion, societal equilibrium, and geopolitical interplays. The multifaceted nature of FP appears through its direct impact on macroeconomic indicators and its latent influence on international relations and policy-making. This critical nexus underscores the imperative for a comprehensive understanding and strategic management of food production processes to sustain and enhance global socio-economic stability and growth. Investigating the nexus between green finance (GF) and FP is pivotal for ensuring national security and promoting sustainable economic development. This research thus paper examines GF's impact on FP in China as outlined in the 2017 green finance policies. It employs the difference-in-differences (DID) method and analyzes a balanced panel dataset comprising 282 cities in China from 2009 to 2020. The results show that GF has an inhibitory effect on FP, and this remains valid after a range of reliability checks, including parallel trend assessments and placebo tests. Further findings of transmission mechanism analysis indicate that non-agricultural factors and financial exclusion are critical for GF's inhibitory effect on FP. Heterogeneity analyses show that GF's inhibitory effect on FP is more pronounced in the main food-producing areas, the main food-marketing areas, and cities with better infrastructure. In recent years, urban shrinkage, as one of the phenomena revealed in the process of new urbanisation development in China, has gradually attracted the attention of many scholars. To address the question of whether urban shrinkage has an impact on the level of local basic public services supply, this paper uses panel data from 298 prefecture-level cities in China from 2010 to 2018 to empirically analyse the impact of urban shrinkage on the level of basic public services supply by dividing shrinking cities into different regions and dividing basic public services into different dimensions. The results show that the impact of urban shrinkage on the supply level of basic public services is an 'inverted U-shaped' non-linear process that first promotes and then inhibits the level of basic public services supply; the impact of urban shrinkage on various dimensions of the level of basic public services supply varies, and generally shows a positive and then negative trend. Regarding regional heterogeneity, urban shrinkage has a more significant negative impact on the central region's basic public services supply level, followed by the western region and, to a lesser extent, the northeastern region. Therefore, local governments should make Smart Shrinkage according to local conditions, improve the basic public services supply system to enhance residents' happiness and satisfaction, introduce corresponding policies for the introduction of talents and focus on employee training and education activities to achieve the goal of equalising of basic public services supply in China. To attain China's target of carbon neutrality by 2060, the implementation of the Energy Consumption Trading (ECT) system serves as an effective approach to improve energy efficiency and mitigate CO 2 emissions. Nevertheless, it is crucial to consider not only the importance of carbon reduction effect caused by ECT system but also the associated cost. Therefore, this paper applies the spatial difference-in-differences (SDID) model to assess the direct and spillover impacts of the ECT policy on the carbon abatement cost, which is measured by shadow price of CO 2 emissions and calculated using SBM-DEA model. Panel data encompassing 279 Chinese cities from 2010 to 2019 are employed for analysis, with additional insights provided through heterogeneity and mechanism analyses. The results show that ECT policy increases the local carbon abatement cost in pilot cities but decreases the cost of surrounding cities. Meanwhile, such a declination effect in neighboring cities with a spatial attenuation boundary of 1000 km. The heterogeneity analysis suggests that the implementation of ECT policy leads to an increase in the carbon abatement cost in cities located in non-Eastern Coastal regions, cities with abundant natural resources and cities with small populations. The mechanism analysis indicates that the ECT policy implementation facilitates the improvement of green technology in the neighboring cities of the pilot project, consequently lowering the carbon abatement cost. Besides, this policy also results in a decrease in the carbon intensity of the pilot cities. However, large inequalities in regional emissions within a country may hinder progress toward a carbon–neutral future, as the unequal distribution of reduction responsibilities among regions could impair just transition and exacerbate uneven development, which necessitates an in-depth understanding of the mechanism of multi-scale carbon inequalities within country, region, and city. Yet, the evolution of carbon inequalities within urban agglomerations and the differences between adjacent or distant urban agglomerations have not been well understood, especially in countries undergoing rapid urbanization. Using the data of 89 cities in China's Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) during 2006–2021, this paper quantifies carbon emissions inequality (CEI) at different scales in a systematic regional-urban agglomeration-city hierarchical structure. Then, under the integrated mean logarithmic deviation-logarithmic mean Divisia index (MLD-LMDI) decomposition framework, multi-scale CEIs are perfectly decomposed into six interrelated drivers, i.e., industrial emission structure, energy emission intensity, industrial energy mix, energy intensity, industrial structure, and economic development. The results show that economic development, energy intensity, and industrial energy mix disparities are the main determinants accounting for CEIs at different scales. The decreasing CEI in YREB is mainly due to the changes in industrial structure and economic development, while the energy intensity effect partially hinders the mitigation of CEI. In the upper reaches of the YREB, the energy intensity effect accounts for over 94% growth of CEI during 2006–2021, while the decline in CEIs in middle and lower reaches is primarily caused by the effects of industrial energy mix and industrial structure, respectively. Further spatial decomposition analysis reveals more refined city-level heterogeneous effects and emphasizes the prioritized emission reduction direction for each city. Resilience is an important aim of climate adaptation in urban development planning. Since 2015, sponge city (SC) pilot construction in China has highlighted the importance of urban water systems, but has paid insufficient attention to extreme and long-term climate change risks. This paper aims to provide a new method for evaluating the urban water system climate resilience (UWSCR), classify China cities in combination with climate hazards, conduct case studies on SC pilots, and propose ways to improve the UWSCR in SCs. Firstly, Taking heavy rain and drought as hazards, an evaluation index system of UWSCR is established, including engineering resilience (ENR), ecological resilience (ECR) and evolutionary resilience (EVR). A combination model based on the analytic hierarchy process and entropy weight method is used to measure the UWSCR of 27 SC pilot cities and 253 non-pilot cities at or above the prefecture level in China. Secondly, coordinating hazard index and UWSCR index, cities are divided into four types. The results show that the ENR and EVR of SC pilots exhibited an increasing trend from 2010 to 2020 and were greater than those of non-pilots. Among the four types, Resilient Cities and Low Risk Cities with high climate resilience (CR) were mainly distributed in the eastern and central regions of China. High Risk Cities and Vulnerable Cities with low CR were mostly distributed in the central and western regions. Among the cities of high CR, SC pilots accounted for 63.0% of the pilot samples, while non-pilots only accounted for 26.5% of the non-pilot samples. Finally, this paper analyzes the typical cases of SC pilots, and puts forward some suggestions, such as considering the UWSCR systematically and holistically, improving the ECR of UWSCR, making medium-term to long-term adaptation planning and providing differentiated policy support. Carbon lock-in has become a major obstacle to green development in all countries, and carbon unlocking (CUL) is of great significance in accelerating the process of carbon neutrality worldwide. Based on the panel data of 292 prefecture-level cities in China from 2006 to 2020, this paper constructs a PSM-DID model based on machine learning to empirically test the impact of LCCP policy on urban CUL. The regression result shows that the low carbon city pilot (LCCP) policy significantly increases the level of CUL by 1.25 % in the pilot cities, which is still valid after range of robustness tests, and the mechanism analysis shows that green innovation and green habits are important ways for the policy to affect CUL. Based on the generalized random forest (GRF) algorithm, we further find that the policy can increase the CUL level by 0.6 %, and the average treatment effect (ATE) of the sample is concentrated between 0.004 and 0.006, which exhibits obvious heterogeneity. This paper chooses population quality, openness level and industrial structure as heterogeneous factors, which are finally found to have a U-shaped or inverted U-shaped relationship with ATE. Understanding the evolution of the urban spatial structure is of great significance for clarifying the stage and trajectory of urban development and formulating future urban development plans. Given that previous studies have marginally explored the long-term evolution of the urban employment spatial structure, this paper proposes a theoretical model hypothesizing five sequential stages of a complete evolution cycle from the perspective of mono- and polycentricity: mono-centralization, main-centralization, multi-centralization, de-centralization and re-centralization. Further empirical results based on 292 prefecture-level cities in China from 1997 to 2017 support the model and demonstrate that most cities present an evolution in line with the hypothesis, except a few cities experiencing short-term fluctuations, and approximately 60 % of cities are in the stage of multi-centralization, where subcenters have a growth advantage, and the main center has a scale advantage. Environmental protection and sustainable development are now profoundly ingrained in the public consciousness in the modern era of the global green revolution. First, this paper uses an evolutionary game model to theoretically analyse the impact of environmental regulation and green finance on enterprises by dissecting the game behaviour between local governments, banks and enterprises. Then, we incorporate entrepreneurial spirit into the model to determine whether entrepreneurial spirit accelerates the achievement of green sustainability objectives. Environmental regulation and green finance are found to contribute substantially to the innovation of green technologies by local enterprises, while entrepreneurial spirit accelerates this process. Finally, we empirically test the findings based on a prefecture-level panel dataset from 2007 to 2020. We find that green finance has a positive impact in Central and Western cities of China, while Eastern cities are in greater need for government environmental regulation controls. For entrepreneurial spirit, the incentive effect of entrepreneurial spirit on the level of green technology innovation is more significant in Central and Western regions of China. The low-carbon transformation is the key to China's high-quality economic development. This paper uses the panel data of 278 Chinese cities to measure low-carbon total factor productivity (LCTFP) and examines the impact of environmental protection tax (EPT) reform on LCTFP. EPT significantly promotes LCTFP. The promotion effect is more significant in the lower administrative level and resource-based cities in central and western regions. EPT promotes LCTFP through three channels including green technology innovation (GTI) effect, industrial structure upgrading effect and forcing effect. EPT has a negative spatial spillover effect on LCTFP in neighboring areas. The financialisation of rental housing (FRH) has been recognised as a major force behind neighbourhood change and a threat to the right to adequate housing worldwide in/after the 2010s. However, the differentiation of FRH and its impact on housing rents across countries, cities, and neighbourhoods remain understudied. This paper fills this gap by taking China as a case. First, through the lens of state entrepreneurism, we conceptualise how the interplay between the state and financial investors caused the shift of the FRH economy from the venture capital-led asset-light business model to the state-orchestrated asset-heavy business model. Second, we examine how FRH affects local housing rent differently across business models and cities using the housing economics approaches and big data analytics. The analysis results suggest that the differentiation of the socio-spatial consequences of FRH is caused not only by financial investors' motivation to capitalise on the local population and neighbourhoods but also by the state's motivation to employ financialisation to serve its policy objectives. This paper advances the understanding of the variegated FRH under state entrepreneurialism. In this paper, we assessed size of the shadow economy for 198 prefecture-level cities in China from the years 2000 to 2018 using a method called MIMIC, which stands for multiple indicators and multiple causes. The goal of the paper is to investigate temporal-spatial characteristics of evolution in the shadow economy. The results manifest that percentage of the total commerce that is hidden from view all over China first increases and then decreases over time, with an average of 17.08 %. The increase in taxation will likely trigger a massive expansion in the business conducted in the shadows, while the increase in government regulation and self-employment rates all have produced negative effects on it. The locations that have a significant amount of unreported economic activity are basically centralized in southeast coastal area, southwest area, northeast of China, and three provinces of central China. Moreover, the difference in shadow economy between resource-based and non-resource-based cities tends to widen gradually after 2013. This study delves into the nexus between the efficiency of carbon emission allocation and the efficiency of green development within the context of innovative city construction. Leveraging data from 283 prefecture-level cities and corresponding provincial-level panel data spanning the period from 2005 to 2019 in mainland China, the research employs the zero-sum gain DEA model to compute provincial carbon emission allocation efficiency and allocate allowances. Furthermore, it utilizes the all-factor non-radial directional distance function and the SBM-DEA model to gauge the green development efficiency of prefecture-level cities. The double-difference method is applied to evaluate the impact of innovative city construction on regional green development efficiency. The results indicate that an imbalance between carbon emission allocation efficiency and emission quotas detrimentally affects urban green development. However, technological progress, factor accumulation, and the institutional environment associated with innovative city building mitigate this negative impact. Heterogeneity analysis reveals a differentiated effect of innovative city building on regional green development efficiency. This paper focuses on energy poverty dynamics by answering one question: Does energy poverty trap exist in Chinese cities? For this purpose, we examine the co-evolution between per capita energy consumption and income for 286 prefectural-and-above level cities in China over the period 2002 to 2014. A nonparametric joint-distribution dynamics approach is employed in the analysis. Both static and dynamic distribution analyses demonstrate significant evidence of club convergence in energy consumption across Chinese cities, and there are multiple equilibria between per capita energy consumption and income in the long-run distribution. The results also suggest that considerable cities fall into energy poverty trap, a chronic state with low income and low energy consumption. Therefore, we can argue that energy poverty is not a transitory state for those cities and support the existence of energy poverty trap in China. Urban housing demolition has been a core Chinese policy to deal with poor quality and substantial residential units in cities in China. The policy operated to compensate individuals who were displaced when demolition projects were undertaken. Now the compensation for demolition in the shanty towns may be the largest transfer payment to households in the history of China. However, the large amount of compensation for demolition has also aroused social concerns that demolition will exacerbate wealth inequality. This study uses data from the China Household Finance Survey (CHFS) data in 2013 and 2019 to analyze the impact of urban housing demolition on wealth inequality within cities. The results show that for cities with relatively lower levels of initial wealth inequality, the relatively wealthier households who experienced demolition had a rapid increase in their wealth. Thus, demolition increased the intra-city wealth inequality. In contrast, for cities with relatively higher levels of initial wealth inequality, demolition reduced the intra-city wealth inequality by removing low value housing units. Significantly, with the majority of tier 3 and tier 4 cities exhibiting greater initial wealth inequality compared to their tier 1 and tier 2 counterparts, the demolition policy has, in essence, curbed wealth disparities in these smaller urban areas. The implementation of new-type infrastructure plays a crucial role in driving low-carbon economic development in China and worldwide. This work employs fixed-effects model, mediated-effects model, spatial Durbin model, and meta-analysis to thoroughly examine the influence of new-type infrastructure on total factor carbon productivity using panel data of 274 Chinese cities spanning from 2011 to 2021. The findings indicate that: firstly, new-type infrastructure has a notable and beneficial impact on total factor carbon productivity, but there is heterogeneity in resource endowment, city scale, and policy intensity. New-type infrastructure can only promote total factor carbon productivity enhancement in non-resource cities and large cities. Under the influence of smart city policies, new-type infrastructure has a stronger effect on total factor carbon productivity enhancement. Secondly, digital finance and marketization are important ways for new-type infrastructure to improve total factor carbon productivity. Thirdly, via spatial spillover effect, new-type infrastructure may boost total factor carbon productivity not only in the local region but also in places that are spatially connected. Prefabricated buildings (PB) are assembled using prefabricated components, known for their cost-effectiveness and high efficiency. They are seen as an effective means to achieving sustainable development goals and mitigating climate change. This paper examines the impact of prefabricated buildings on urban green total factor energy efficiency (GTFEE) using panel data from 278 cities in China. The analysis is conducted through the application of a super-efficiency slack-based measure (SBM) model and a difference-in-differences model. The results of the study indicate that the promotion of PB can significantly improve urban GTFEE; there is heterogeneity in the improvement of urban GTFEE by PB; the innovation effect, industrial effect and marketization effect of PB are the main ways to improve urban GTFEE. Specifically, PB exerts an innovation effect by promoting technological innovation. It influences consumer and investor demand, leading to increased activity in the secondary industry, thereby creating an industrial effect. Moreover, PB facilitates the marketization effect by phasing out outdated industries, encouraging autonomous enterprise innovation, and fostering the growth of new advanced enterprises. COVID-19 can be considered as the largest public health incident since 2019, posing disturbances to the medical, economic, and social systems. Understanding different levels of city resilience to the impact of COVID-19 on sustainable urban development is therefore essential. In this paper, we analyzed the evolution of the pandemic, the recovery of urban activities and major drivers of urban resilience to COVID-19 based on urban activity patterns derived from NO 2 monitoring stations from 217 cities in China. It is observed that nearly all urban activities have been affected by the epidemic with a reduced NO 2 emission, indicating a significant decline in the intensity of urban activity. The recovery patterns of human activity among different cities show that: (1) northern cities where low-resilience cities agglomerated have been severely affected. As of April 31, 2020, 12 northern cities have not recovered to pre-epidemic levels; (2) about three-quarters of the cities went through multiple stages to return to the pre-pandemic level, which related to both pandemic stress and prevention measures; (3) about 46.04% of the cities experienced increasing activity patterns that exceeded the pre-epidemic activity level. It is also observed that urban resilience can behave quite differently driven by variations in green coverage, economic aggregate, employment security, and medical system. Our study highlights the potential of an elevated urban resilience by optimizing the urban layout, improving the quantity and quality of green space, and enhancing the medical system. Synergistic regional emission reduction (SRER) is an important part of the strategy to achieve carbon neutrality. In this paper, a system efficiency value-added model is proposed to measure the strength of SRER network relationships for 40,186 sets of city pairs and the SRER levels of 284 cities in China from 2011 to 2021. Subsequently, the evolution characteristics of the SRER network, the spatial and temporal characteristics of urban SRER levels, and the driving factors of the SRER network evolution are further analyzed. The results are as follows: SRER network is shifting from a fan-shaped network pattern of "three-region clustering and sporadic coverage" to a shuttle-shaped nested network pattern of "east-west linkage and multi-region support". Time series analysis found that urban SRER level in China showed fluctuating growth characteristics during the study period. Spatial analysis reveals that the spatial autocorrelation of urban SRER level is decreasing, and the spatial distribution range is expanding towards the southwest. Emission reduction comparative advantages (CAER), green innovation division of labor (GIDL) and urban economic linkages (LCEL) are driver factors of SRER network evolution. This study proposes an evaluation method for the urban SRER level from network relationships perspective. Subsequently, network evolution characterization, spatial and temporal characterization, and driving factor analysis were conducted. Emissions from ships stand as one of the principal contributors to air pollution in coastal areas. China has implemented the Domestic Ship Emission Control Area (DECA) policy progressively since 2016 to alleviate sulfur oxide and particulate matter pollution in coastal cities by limiting the sulfur content in marine fuel oil. This study utilizes Synthetic Difference-in-Differences model to construct a counterfactual framework for evaluating the DECA policy effect on air quality of cities in the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta, and the Bohai Rim region. Results revealed that DECA policy significantly reduced the urban sulfur dioxide (SO 2) concentrations of YRD, BR, and PRD regions by 9.93 %, 8.64 %, and 7.09 %, respectively. However, the policy's efficacy in restraining fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) concentrations was found to be non-significant. This study further estimated the dynamic changes in SO 2 concentration in coastal cities of different regions in the DECA coverage. The results showed that the DECA policy generally began to significantly reduce SO 2 concentration levels in the second year after implementation, and with the tightening of the DECA policy, the reduction effect followed a growing-and-then-falling trend. With the establishment of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals in China, developing low-carbon cities has become crucial. Previous studies primarily focus on the quantitative structure of land use to achieve low carbon optimization, while ignoring the spatial integration between urban form and carbon emissions. To fulfill this gap, this paper proposed a dual-scale low carbon oriented multi-objective land use allocation (DOLA) optimization model, utilizing idea-point multi-objective linear programming (IMLP) and non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) to optimize the low-carbon-emission pattern of the city at both the structural and spatial scales respectively. By innovatively linking the urban shape index with carbon emissions, this model aims to minimize urban carbon emissions, while maximizing economic development, urban development suitability, and the compactness of city. The proposed method is applied to Wuhan's main urban area in China, the DOLA model shows significant improvements in target values across all scenarios. Among them, the scenario that prioritized low carbon emissions at both the structural and spatial scales achieved the most significant reduction of 6.43 % in carbon emissions. The DOLA effectively contributes to achieving multiple spatial targets, thereby aiding in reducing carbon emissions. This paper explores how green fiscal expenditure affects G reen T otal F actor E nergy E fficiency (GTFEE) from both non-spatial and spatial perspectives based on selected panel data of 254 cities in China. The results of the non-spatial panel model indicate that green fiscal expenditure has a significant positive impact on GTFEE. A comparative study of different econometric models shows that the main parts of the results are largely consistent, which indicates that the conclusions are robust. The spatial autocorrelation findings indicate a statistically significant presence of positive spatial spillover effects in the GTFEE of Chinese cities. Spatial Durbin Model (SDM) and Dynamic Spatial Durbin Model (DSDM) indicate that green fiscal expenditure has a similarly significant positive effect on GTFEE, which will increase over time. High-speed rail (HSR) has emerged as a significant mode for intercity transport in several countries, particularly China, setting an environment that may promote integration between air and HSR networks. To better measure the current level of integration of China's air-HSR intermodal network and identify implementation issues, this paper establishes a novel assessment framework that considers three primary areas: service capability, network connectivity and transfer potential. The framework is based on a comprehensive literature review of network measurement and assessment methodologies. Then, fractal theory is used to establish an assessment model that associates the fractal dimension to the level of intermodal integration, which can serve as an important complement to traditional weighting methods. The model and framework are applied to the 10 cities in China with the potential for air-HSR integration. The results show that international hub airports, together with their closest HSR station, do not necessarily perform at a higher integration level than regional hubs. The paper also proposes policy and practical recommendations to enhance air-HSR network integration levels from service supply, network coordination and transfer design perspectives. Based on 196 prefecture-level cities in China from 2006 to 2021, this paper constructs a weight matrix of urban economic geography and uses the spatial differential model to verify the impact of smart city policies on urban green energy efficiency. The results show that the efficiency value of green energy fluctuates in Chinese cities. Different test results show that smart city policies can effectively improve urban green energy efficiency, but mainly from the time effect rather than the individual effect. It means the improvement in urban green energy efficiency comes more from the fast-growing of the Chinese economy and urban construction in this period than from the country's smart city pilot policy. In addition, from the spatial spillover effect result, China needs to design a better urban spatial development plan to improve the capacity of smart city energy services and vigorously develop intelligent technology represented by information and communication science. The business environment is becoming a yardstick for assessment of local governments in China, and thus the question of how to evaluate the business environment of urban agglomerations has become an important new issue. This paper proposes a quantitative method for the assessment of business environments in urban agglomerations for purposes of city ranking. First, a business environment evaluation index system for urban agglomerations, including the four dimensions of market, government, law, and humanistic, was established. Second, A hybrid model combined entropy weight method (EWM), genetic algorithm (GA), and back propagation (BP) neural network was constructed to quantise the business environment. Then, the Chengdu-Chongqing and Beibu Gulf urban agglomerations in China, the two most important urban agglomerations of the new western land-sea corridor, were selected as cast study. The results are as follows: (1) The business environments of the two most important urban agglomerations of the new western land-sea corridor have been improved, but the differences between them are significant. The level of development of the business environment of Chengdu-Chongqing is higher than that of Beibu Gulf; specifically, the biggest gap is of the rule of law environment. The gap in the governmental business environment is the smallest. (2) From 2015 to 2020, the difference in business environment between the two most important urban agglomerations in the new western land-sea corridor decreased. However, intra-group differences were the largest. (3) The spatial pattern of the business environment in the new western land-sea corridor shows a "northwest-southeast" distribution, with the center of gravity of the business environment moving to the southeast from 2015 to 2020. [Display omitted] Particulate matter (PM) is an important air pollutant in subway systems. Exposure to high PM concentrations poses a threat to human health and raises concerns. Piston effect can provide the outdoor fresh air to subway stations through station exits, but it also brings PM from tunnels to platforms when the train enters the station. In this paper, a transient numerical model is developed according to an actual subway station and validated by field tests. The model is used to investigate PM 10 concentration at platform induced by train movement. The cumulative PM 10 concentration at platform in one day is calculated according to the train schedule. Platform screen door (PSD) with adjustable vents is studied to control the PM 10 level at platform and energy saving in 27 cities of five climatic zones in China are discussed. The results show that adjustable vent height should be less than 0.70 m to ensure that PM 10 concentrations at platform can be maintained at an acceptable level and the requirement of fresh air can be met. Moreover, energy consumption can be reduced by more than 70 % in different cities compared with the conventional mechanical ventilation system. The optimized adjustable vent can provide an important reference for improving indoor air quality (IAQ) and saving energy consumption of ventilation systems in underground facilities. Actively promoting city's energy transition is crucial for achieving SDG-7 and SDG-13. Taking the establishment of New Energy Demonstration Cities (NEDC) in China as a quasi-natural experiment, this paper employs difference-in-difference model to empirically test the impact of the NEDC policy on city's energy transition and its underlying mechanisms. The results demonstrate that the NEDC policy has significantly accelerated regional energy transition. Through an analysis of the internal motivation for energy transition, we find that this positive effect is predominantly driven by green demand-side rather than supply-side. Further examination of the external impetus for energy transition reveals that government governance, technology innovation, and the associated human and financial supports are key factors in propelling local energy transition. With the rapid development of transportation systems and increased connectivity between cities, the capacity of regional cities to propagate risks and cooperate with each other has a great impact on regional resilience. Given that a region can be seen as a networked and multidimensional system with complex interactions of cities, it is necessary to assess regional resilience based on the complex network thinking. This paper views the region as a two-layer coupled city network with risk propagation and cooperative recovery and propose the regional resilience assessment framework. Then, a network of 337 prefecture-level cities in mainland China is used as the study area to assess the impact of different cities on the regional resilience after a sudden public health disaster. The results show that cities in western China have less impact on regional resilience, while cities in central and eastern China have more impact. In addition, we found that each indicator under the three dimensions of regional network resilience has different degrees of correlation with influencing factors. Meanwhile, the changes in the same influencing factor may cause indicators under different dimensions of resilience to increase or decrease. This paper utilizes the "Broadband China" policy as a quasi-natural experiment, employing panel data from 279 prefecture-level cities spanning from 2006 to 2019. By constructing a spatial difference-in-differences (SDID) model, it examines the impact of digital infrastructure (DI) on industrial ecology (IE). The study finds that DI enhances both local and neighboring IE, with a spatial attenuation boundary of 600 km for IE impacts on neighboring cities. DI primarily facilitates the transformation of IE by promoting green technology innovation and expediting factor mobility. Heterogeneity analysis conducted using a spatial difference-in-difference-in-differences (SDDD) model reveals that DI has a greater impact on IE in resource-based cities, highly marketized regions, small-scale cities, and eastern regions. The temporal and geographic varieties of entrepreneurial urban governance have sparked considerable debate. A key research gap that remains unfilled is the role of national states in the transition of urban governance from a singular logic of growth. This paper attempts to reveal how the national state and its top-down territorial logic shape this transition in China. Based on a theoretical engagement between political and economic geographers' approaches to city-regional development, we conceptualise a 'central-local state strategic coupling' between national geopolitical goals and local entrepreneurial strategies. We argue that municipalities endeavour to plug their city-regions into national geopolitical strategies to unlock the resources (e.g., land and financial capital) necessary for the implementation of local entrepreneurial strategies. The central state strategically selects certain city-regions to develop by privileging their municipalities' access to key resources to facilitate local entrepreneurial strategies. Thus, the central state aligns city-regional development/transformation to its geopolitical goals/strategies in a subtle and depoliticised manner. We substantiate this argument by taking local economic space production as a lens, with a comparative analysis of the emerging urban entrepreneurial/economic space production strategies in three Chinese inland cities. It remains unclear whether a polycentric city can support more and higher-order consumer amenities. This paper presents new evidence from shopping malls in China and includes the effect of urban spatial structure on the order of consumer amenities and the moderating effect of transportation infrastructure, both of which have been neglected in previous empirical studies. We find that a monocentric city can provide a greater number and higher order of shopping malls than a polycentric city. Additionally, better transportation infrastructure can compensate for the disadvantage of polycentricity in the provision of low-order shopping malls, while it reinforces the merit of monocentricity in higher-order shopping malls. The aim of the paper is to evaluate empirically the main implications of digital technology (DT) on carbon emissions (CE). Our sample focuses on 283 cities of China over the period from 2003 to 2019, and the effect of DT on CE is examined with a threshold spatial effect model. Empirical results show that DT has a negative impact on carbon emissions and the transmission mechanism contains both a direct impact on local region and a spillover effect across regions. There is empirical evidence of a threshold effect in the relationship between DT and CE, with stronger carbon reduction effect for DT values larger than the established threshold. Moreover, CE reduction effect of DT appear to be amplified by the level of marketization. Regions with a higher level of marketization thus show a more significant manifestation of CE reduction effect attributed to DT. • A framework is proposed to analyze compound floods with multiple driving factors. • Local rainfall has a larger impact on the flooding levels of the GBA, China. • Flooding area is about 50 km2 and 1.3 m flooded depth for the worst scenario. • Findings have important implications to GBA's flooding control and management. Low-lying coastal cities are vulnerable to compound floods caused by many factors including river flows, tides and local rainfall. Many previous studies focus on the impacts of rainfall and tidal levels (two driving factors) on estuaries or regions near the main single river, while research about the three influencing factors on the floods for complex urban river networks remain relatively scarce. This paper proposes a framework to simulate the coastal compound flooding process, with a series of scenarios designed to explore the main flooding drivers and their worst possible combination. The approach is used to quantify the induced flooding consequences, in which a two-dimensional model is employed to conduct a case study for a city with complex river networks. The Qianshan River basin in Zhuhai City, located in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) of China is used as the case study. Application results show that: (i) the occurrence and properties of flooding in this coastal area are jointly affected by upstream river flows, downstream tidal levels and local rainfall intensity with different contribution levels, (ii) compared to tidal levels, local rainfall intensity has a larger impact on the flooding levels of the study region, and (iii) the worst scenario where a 50-year return period upstream river flow co-occurring with high tide and a 100-year return period rainfall can produce a flooding area up to 50 km2 for the study region, with an average of 1.3 m flooded depth. A sustainable economy through the rational spatial expansion of coastal areas is an increasingly essential global topic. This paper aims to explore the mechanism by which supporting cities influence the spatial expansion of economic development zones (EDZs) in 264 coastal EDZs of China during 1995–2020. Meanwhile, the effects of variations in the distance between supporting cities and coastal EDZs and different city scales are considered. The results provide new explanations for realizing the sustainable development of the coastal economy by planning EDZs at a suitable location from the supporting city. The supporting cities' economic strength can significantly contribute to the spatial expansion of coastal EDZs. The influence shows a distance decay law when the distance is less than 47.692 km, between 47.692 and 58.039 km, and greater than 58.039 km, with impact coefficients of 0.479, 0.393, and 0.212, respectively. The average spatial scale of coastal EDZs varies in an "inverted U–shape" with increasing distance. The average spatial scale of the urban general radiation type (47.692 km ≤ distance <58.039 km) is the largest. Supporting cities' scale affects the economic radiation range of supporting cities. The results suggest three implications for the future development of coastal EDZs. 1) Building the EDZ while incorporating practical development needs; 2) Scientifically planning the spatial layout of EDZs; 3) The synergistic development of supporting cities, transportation hubs, and EDZs. Considering the constraints on urban land expansion, improving the efficiency of existing urban land becomes a key factor in promoting resource sustainability and environmental protection. This paper examines the impact mechanism and threshold effect of urban land use efficiency (ULUE) on resources and environment carrying capacity (RECC) using panel data covering 282 Chinese cities from 2007 to 2018. The empirical results show that: (1) ULUE enhances RECC in China, and the rationalization and advancement of industrial structure are important transmission mechanisms; (2) The impact of ULUE on RECC is heterogeneous, showing significant differences in different regions, periods, administrative levels, and resource endowments; (3) With industrial rationalization and industrial advancement as threshold variables, ULUE exhibits a "gradient-style" enhancement with significant threshold characteristics in improving RECC. In order to understand the spatial variations of students' active school travel (AST) across different regions in mountain cities, this paper examines the spatial variations in the influence of socio-economic, topographic, and built environment characteristics on the active mode choice of students in Guiyang, a typical mountainous city in China. Using the data collected from 2021 Guiyang household travel survey, the travel characteristics of 2585 primary and secondary school students distributed in different regions within the city are analyzed. In addition, a semiparametric geographically weighted logistic regression model is employed to examine whether the determinants of students' AST vary across the studied areas. The results show that noticeable spatial variations exist in the relationship between the choice of AST and the selected explanatory variables, with different student groups exhibit sensitivity to these variables in different geographic areas. For example, among students aged 6–12 living in suburban areas, there is a higher likelihood of choosing AST as the school travel distance increases. However, students with long-distance travel in suburban areas are less inclined to choose AST as the terrain slope increases. Conversely, students aged 13–18 in urban areas are more prone to choose AST as the slope increases. To promote equitable access to AST among urban and rural students, several policy recommendations are proposed after considering their socio-economic attributes and travel environment. These recommendations primarily focus on improving school bus services, creating an active travel-friendly environment, enhancing public transit accessibility, and implementing staggered shifts for parents and students. Revealing the spatial differences and the convergence mechanisms of Green Transition of Urban Land Use (GTULU) in the context of industrial integration is of great significance for formulating differentiated industrial development strategies, accelerating the process of industrial integration, and exploring synergistic enhancement paths of GTULU. In this paper, 107 prefecture-level and above cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) are taken as research objects, and the entropy value method, exploratory spatial data analysis model and spatial convergence model are comprehensively applied to analyze the spatio-temporal differences and spatial convergence of the GTULU under the background of industrial integration. The study shows that: (1) from 2003 to 2021, the level of GTULU in the YREB has been increasing, with the mean value growing from 0.09 to 0.14, but there are still significant spatial differentiation and spatial correlation characteristics, and the regional imbalance phenomenon of GTULU is more and more obvious as time goes by. (2) The GTULU of the YREB and its upstream, midstream, and downstream regions all exhibit a temporal evolution characteristic of increasing fluctuations. (3) There is no σ-convergence in GTULU in the YREB and its upstream, middle-stream, and downstream regions. However, there are all significant absolute β convergence and conditional β convergence. Moreover, under the combined influence of government management, technological input, industrial structural adjustment, and spatial impact, the convergence rate of the YREB has significantly accelerated, from 1.98% to 2.31%, and the convergence effect exhibits marked heterogeneity. Environmental regulation (EnR) is essential for the government to guide the eco-efficient use of land resources, solve environmental problems, and promote ecological civilization construction. Utilizing a dataset comprising 266 cities in China from 2011 to 2021, this paper studies the intermediary effect of green technology innovation (GTI) and industrial structure optimization (ISO) in EnR affecting urban land use eco-efficiency (ULUEE). The results show that: (1) The EnR significantly promotes the improvement of ULUE, reaching 0.354; (2) EnR also promotes GTI and ISO to 0.653 and 0.189, respectively; (3) From the results of mediating effect, GTI and ISO are mediating variables that affect the level of ULUEE. GTI also affects ULUEE through ISO. From the perspective of the path coefficient of the chain mediating effect, the influence coefficient of path① (EnR → GTI → ULUEE) is 0.107, path② (EnR → ISO → ULUEE) is 0.111, and path③ (EnR → GTI → ISO → ULUEE)) is 0.043; (4) There is an inverted U-shaped relationship between the effects of EnR on ULUEE; (5) In the heterogeneity analysis, the effect of EnR on ULUEE is more evident, but the impact is less pronounced in eastern cities and large cities of scale. China's new town and ghost city phenomenon has attracted interest from academics and the media since the 2010s. There is, however, little research on the lived experiences of people in new towns, or of the transformation of these new towns. This paper uses Lefebvre's spatial triad to examine how the spaces of the new town are produced and transformed by interactions between multiple actors. Using an analytical framework based on the spatial triad, we explore the interactive mechanisms and the dialectical relationships within the triad. Taking Kangbashi, a new town in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, as a case study, we explore how the spatial production of a new town is co-created by multiple actors, and local government-led conceived space plays a dominant role in that creation. Through interactions in the dynamic nexus of conceived-perceived-lived space, the new town space is in the process of transformation from an empty "ghost city" to a comfortable habitable city. This research deepens our understanding of new towns and production of space by connecting state-led and capital-driven urban construction with the lived practices of residents. We try to expand the political promotion tournaments in Chinese local governments from raising GDP to the level of increasing fiscal revenues. From the vantage point of officials' performance appraisal, we investigate the impact of local government officials' political ambitions, represented by the ex-ante commitment level of fiscal revenue targets, on carbon emission intensity (CEI). Utilizing a sample of 209 prefecture-level cities in China spanning 2006 to 2019, this paper empirically scrutinizes the influence of local government political ambition on CEI. The findings reveal that the greater the political ambition of local government officials, the more pronounced the reduction in CEI. Furthermore, our study demonstrates that political ambition contributes to the decline of CEI by elevating the levels of environmental attention and green innovation. This research not only aids in comprehending the rationale and necessity of the political promotion tournaments implemented by the Chinese central government but also offers valuable insights for other developing countries seeking to mitigate CEI. This paper chooses 98 mining cities in China from 2007 to 2021 as research samples. It investigates the policy practice of green development in mining cities according to the point of view of policy combination. We establish a super-efficiency model considering undesirable output to measure the green development level of mining cities and further construct a dynamic panel model based on the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) to test the transmission mechanism and heterogeneous effect of different types of environmental regulation to promote the green development of mining cities. The findings demonstrate that environmental regulations about command control, market incentives, and public participation can all help mining cities develop more sustainably. Additionally, there is a nonlinear relationship of an inverted "U" shape between the degree of green development in mining cities and environmental regulations related to command control. Combining policies can encourage the green development of mining cities, but there are crowding-out and substitution effects when environmental regulations are combined with market forces. Environmental regulation promotes urban green development by improving the energy consumption structure of mining cities. In this process, the level of digital development positively regulates the impact of environmental regulation on urban green development.
