Event-based models focus on modelling of peak runoff from rainfall data. Conceptual models indicate simplified models that provide reasonably accurate answers despite their crude nature. Rainfall-runoff models are used to transform a rainfall event into a runoff event. This paper focuses on reviewing computational simulation of rainfall-runoff processes over a catchment. Lumped conceptual, event-based rainfall-runoff models have remained the dominant practice for design flood estimation in Australia for many years due to their simplicity, flexibility, and accuracy under certain conditions. Attempts to establish regionalization methods for prediction of design flood hydrographs in ungauged catchments have seen little success. Therefore, as well as reviewing key rainfall-runoff model components for design flood estimation with a special focus on event-based conceptual models, this paper covers the aspects of regionalization to promote their applications to ungauged catchments. Inference is central to pragmatic theories of meaning and communication, but most studies of inference to date have been undertaken in adjacent fields rather than in pragmatics. The aim of this special issue is to bring together pragmatic perspectives on inference in order to further our understanding of the role that inference - as both a product and a process - plays in pragmatic models of communication. This aim is realised through a set of six papers that collectively address key questions arising when we go beyond the traditional focus in pragmatics on inferences by the hearer about the speaker's intended meaning. These articles draw from a range of different methodological and theoretical standpoints to examine the inferential, interactional, and developmental processes that underpin different types of pragmatic inference. Various factors influence wildfire probability, including land use/land cover (LULC), fuel types, and their moisture content, meteorological conditions, and terrain characteristics. The Adriatic Sea coastal area in Croatia has a long record of devastating wildfires that have caused severe ecological and economic damages as well as the loss of human lives. Assessing the conditions favorable for wildfires and the possible damages are crucial in fire risk management. Adriatic settlements and ecosystems are highly vulnerable, especially during summer, when the pressure from tourist migration is the highest. However, available fire risk models designed to fit the macro-scale level of assessment cannot provide information detailed enough to meet the decision-making conditions at the local level. This paper describes a model designed to assess wildfire risks at the meso-scale, focusing on environmental and anthropogenic descriptors derived from moderate- to high-resolution remote sensing data (Sentinel-2), Copernicus Land Monitoring Service datasets, and other open sources. Risk indices were integrated using the multi-criteria decision analysis method, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), in a GIS environment. The model was tested in three coastal catchments, each having recently experienced severe fire events. Abstracts. Forty-two medication adherence concepts were reported and grouped into 10 domains. Eight forms of medication adherence were reported during interviews, along with 27 drivers of non-adherence, all of which were incorporated into a conceptual model. Participants reported skipping medication doses (n=36/57; 63.2%) or taking medication later in the day than prescribed (n=29/57; 50.9%). Common drivers of non-adherence included forgetfulness (n=35/57; 61.4%), being out of the usual routine (n=31/57; 54.4%) and being busy (n=22/57; 38.6%). US participants were more likely to report non-adherence due to low perceived efficacy (n=6/21, 28.6%) and cost (n=5/21, 23.8%) than German (n=1/18, 5.6%; n=0/18, 0.0%) or Spanish (n=2/18, 11.1%; n=1/18, 5.6%) participants. Conclusion: Findings highlight the diverse forms and drivers of medication non-adherence, informing the development of a comprehensive conceptual model of medication adherence. The conceptual model builds on and advances previous models of medication adherence and can be used by healthcare professionals to understand and interpret barriers to medication adherence and how best to support patients in taking their medication as intended. The richness and complexity of consent present challenges to those aiming to make related contributions to computer information systems (CIS). This paper aims to support consent-related research in CIS by simplifying the understanding of existing literature and facilitating the framing of future consent management research. Firstly, it outlines existing consent management research and shows how it relates to the literature in law and ethics. Secondly, it presents some fundamental explanations and definitions that must be considered for further contributions to the consent management literature. Thirdly, it identifies five types of consent-related stances often taken in the consent management literature and explains each in some detail. Fourth, it explains one of the identified types of stances (i.e., the disciplinary stance) by expanding on the links between consent as a legal construct and its ethical counterpart. Fifth, considering another of the identified types of stances (i.e., the theoretical stances normally adopted in the consent management literature), the paper presents the key requirements for legally and ethically effective consent management based on three prominent theories. As a strategic commitment of manufacturers to enrich their offer by including services, servitization is becoming an increasingly important phenomenon both in practice and in the research community. Considering that this is a young research field spanning different research communities, the aim of this paper is to systematise the existing research results and knowledge and, thus, to offer a unique conceptual framework to cover the phenomenon of servitization. Calibration and regionalization are two key tasks in hydrological modelling, and the availability of increased data and computing resources has enhanced our ability to complete these tasks. This paper addresses both tasks, i.e. (i) it proposes novel model structure-based calibration strategies with the goal to improve estimation of high streamflows, and (ii) it explores the association of soil hydraulic properties with optimal parameters to estimate streamflows in ungauged catchments. Both tasks are demonstrated by employing a conceptual hydrological model, Sacramento Soil Moisture Accounting (SAC-SMA), on multiple catchments in the Narmada River Basin. The initial calibrated model exhibited good model performance, with high flows being underestimated. Seven calibration strategies via revising parameter space are explored, and improvement in high flow performance is observed at nine out of 12 catchments. Estimated streamflows based on soil hydraulic parameters demonstrate regionalization potential. This paper is a continuation of the previous one (Widera, 2024. Acta Geologica Polonica, 74 (1), e2). A new, alternative interpretation of the tectonic development of two lignite-rich deposits in the Lubstów and Kleszczów grabens in central Poland is presented. The maximum thickness of lignite mined from both deposits is >86 and >250 m, respectively. These grabens were selected for detailed tectonic analysis because syn-depositional or post-depositional tectonic uplift is undeniably evident. The current study focuses on the distinction between tectonic subsidence/uplift and autocompactional subsidence, and on the timing of their occurrence. Such a research approach allows for the presentation of new conceptual models of Cenozoic tectonic evolution during the formation of the third, very thick, Ścinawa lignite seam (ŚLS-3) and the second Lusatian lignite seam (LLS-2). As a result, it is shown here that the magnitude of both the downward and upward tectonic movements are significantly smaller than previously thought. This new interpretation is also confirmed by the low rank of lignite coalification and the net calorific value of the ŚLS-3 and LLS-2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although qualitative research is often equated with inductive analysis, researchers may also use deductive qualitative approaches for certain types of research questions and purposes. Deductive qualitative research allows researchers to use existing theory to examine meanings, processes, and narratives of interpersonal and intrapersonal phenomena. Deductive qualitative analysis (DQA; Gilgun, 2005, 2019) is one form of deductive qualitative research that is suited to theory application, testing, and refinement. Within DQA, researchers combine deductive and inductive analysis to examine supporting, contradicting, refining, and expanding evidence for the theory or conceptual model being examined, resulting in a theory that better fits the present sample and accounts for increased diversity in the phenomenon being studied. This paper acts as a primer on DQA and presents two worked examples of DQA studies. Our discussion focuses on the five primary components of DQA: selecting a research question and guiding theory, operationalizing theory, collecting a purposive sample, coding and analyzing data, and theorizing. We highlight different ways of operationalizing theory as sensitizing constructs or as working hypotheses and discuss common pitfalls in theory operationalization. We divide the coding and analyzing process into two sections for parsimony: early analysis, focused on familiarity with the data, code generation, and identification of negative cases, and middle analysis, focused on developing a thorough understanding of evidence related to the guiding theory and negative cases that depart from the guiding theory. Theorizing occurs throughout as researchers consider ways in which the theory being examined is supported, refuted, refined, or expanded. Polythermal glaciers can trap considerable volumes of liquid water with the potential to generate devastating outburst floods. This study aims to identify water‐filled subglacial reservoirs from ambient seismic noise collected by moderate‐cost surveys. The horizontal‐to‐vertical spectral ratio technique is highly sensitive to impedance contrasts at interfaces, thus commonly used to estimate glacier thickness. Here, we focus on the inverse ratio, that is, the V/H spectral ratio (VHSR), whose high values indicate a low impedance volume beneath the surface, suggesting subglacial cavities. We analyze VHSR peaks from a seismic array of 60 nodes installed on the Tête‐Rousse Glacier (Mont Blanc massif, French Alps); data were gathered over 15 days. Mapping the VHSR amplitude over the free surface reveals the main cavity locations and the basal areas affected by melting within the glacier. Results obtained in the field are supported by a conceptual model based on 3D finite‐element simulations. Plain Language Summary: Considerable volumes of liquid water may be trapped within cavities in polythermal glaciers. If these cavities rupture, the resulting outburst flood has the potential to cause devastation in populated mountain areas. With the aim of testing methods to locate such cavities, we installed 60 small 3‐component seismic sensors on the Tête‐Rousse Glacier (Mont Blanc massif, French Alps), which is known to contain such cavities. We used these sensors to test a detection method based on ambient seismic noise. For 3 weeks, the sensors recorded vibrations within the glacier. On a glacier without cavities, these vibrations ought to be predominantly in the horizontal direction. In the presence of a cavity, we expect the ice above the cavity to vibrate mostly vertically—like a bridge. In this paper, we highlight areas on the glacier where vertical vibrations were stronger than horizontal vibrations. These areas fit well with the locations of the main known cavities in this glacier, and with areas affected by basal melting. We supported our field observations with modeling based on 3D simulations, paving the way to a new method to locate water‐filled cavities within glaciers. Background: Various measures have assessed social connection in long-term care (LTC) home residents. However, they use inconsistent terminology, conceptualizations, and operationalizations of social connection. In this systematic review protocol, we propose a study that will characterize measures that assess aspects of LTC home residents' social connection using a unified conceptual model. The objectives are to (1) describe and analyze the measures and (2) evaluate their measurement properties. Methods: A literature search was conducted in MEDLINE ALL (Ovid), Embase Classic and Embase (Ovid), Emcare Nursing (Ovid), APA PsycInfo (Ovid), Scopus, CINAHL Complete (EBSCOhost), AgeLine (EBSCOhost), and Sociological Abstracts (ProQuest). We will include primary research papers with no language limit, published from database inception. We will include studies of a measure of any aspect of social connection in LTC home residents that report at least one measurement property. Independently, two reviewers will screen titles and abstracts, review full-text articles against eligibility criteria, and extract data from included studies. In objective 1, we will analyze identified tools using an adapted framework method. In objective 2, we will evaluate each measure's measurement properties using COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) methodology. We will engage experts and stakeholders to assist with interpreting results and translating knowledge. Global environmental concerns have garnered significant attention in recent times. Concerns about encouraging more ecologically friendly production to lessen the effects of pollution have been raised by industrial operations that cause environmental pollution. The adoption of an environmental management system in Malaysian firms, however, has received little attention. This paper explores the mediating effect of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) framework on the relationship between ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) and ESG performance of Malaysian companies. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) using SmartPLS 4 was employed to assess the relationship through a conceptual model developed for this purpose. A total of 86 completed responses were collected from the targeted respondents in Malaysia of different industries. With ESG framework as a mediator, ISO 14001 EMS has an insignificant relationship with ESG performance, and the R2 value of ESG performance is 0.243. When the ESG framework is removed, ISO 14001 EMS has a significant relationship with ESG performance, and the f-square value is 0.176. This effect size is considered medium. The results provide an empirical proof for Malaysian companies to adopt the ISO 14001 EMS as a business tool, with ESG framework as a mediator in order to enhance their ESG performance. Although there are numerous data modeling tools for relational databases, data modeling for NoSQL databases has seen another perspective. These databases (a) do not define any explicit schema, (b) store data in a denormalized manner, and (c) give many structure alternatives. The decision to structure the data always relies on rules of thumb, which do not guarantee an optimal structural solution. Based on this motivation, this paper offers a workload-driven model for the logical schema design of a NoSQL document database. It consists of Model input, Intermediate transformation, and Final schema generation. The proposed model takes the conceptual schema (EER model) and application workload (queries and anticipated data volume) as input and describes a procedure to convert it into a logical model for NoSQL document stores. The conversion process initially converts the application queries into query graphs. The query graphs, along with the anticipated data volume, are used to generate the query labels. The resulting query labels are assigned on the schema graph designed from the EER model. The schema graph and labels are used to transform the EER model into the appropriate logical schema model based on the actions defined for each label. We evaluate the model using a case study in the eCommerce application domain. The experimental evaluation shows the proposed model outperforms the existing conventional, optimized, and query path graphs models in multiple aspects, including query performance, storage space efficiency, aggregate pipeline efficiency, read–write latency, collection-wise performance, scalability, throughput and latency. By effectively addressing the challenges associated with managing the variety and volume of big data through a well-designed schema, our proposed model significantly reduces the time, cost, and effort required for schema development and repair. Ontology is a significant data model for identifying semantic information for Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) discovery. Large-scale biological and general datasets have recently been more readily available for study and to support the development of COVID-19 repositioning, but efficiently utilizing and standard metadata modeling of these datasets still remains challenging. Coronavirus disease is a deadly disease. Researchers have focused on the different aspects of COVID-19, such as studies about COVID-19, symptoms, treatment, prevention, resources, infected cases, patient information, global impact, and related research. Compilation and analysis of metadata by knowledge gathered in various field studies can help in efficient data sharing and better decision-making of data related to COVID-19. However, considering the heterogeneous nature of data sources, it is challenging and innovative to make the COVID-19 information human and machine understandable and to provide answers to user queries at all possible aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper propose a COVID-19 ontology named as CovidO metadata model that provides a common conceptual model to facilitate interoperability between metadata ontologies from various heterogeneous data sources. The CovidO has the following objectives: (1) The ontology serves as a reference schema for reporting COVID-19 data. (2) It also offer a customized schema of the existing ontologies to build a standard global data model. (3) It covers all the possible aspects/dimensions of COVID-19. (4) the proposed model aims to utilize findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability (FAIR) principles by providing common conceptualization metadata and thereby abstracting from heterogeneous structures of existing sources of (static) data. The experiments are conducted over CovidO using OOPS, OntoMetric, and RDF/SPARQL query to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed model. Geographic modeling is considered as an effective way to solve geographic problems. Geographic conceptual modeling is the first step of geographic modeling, in which modelers can fully exchange modeling ideas, thereby achieving a common understanding of geographic system and guiding subsequent geographic modeling process. However, due to the diverse research backgrounds of modelers, it is challenging for them to exchange modeling ideas with one another. This paper provides a visual cognitive communication method for modelers by constructing a conceptual graph gallery, and then improves the efficiency of geographic conceptual modeling. A multidimensional description method that describes modeling cognition from multiple perspectives, the conceptual graph gallery that includes concept items and conceptual graphs, and the conceptual graph gallery-based cognitive communication methods are designed in this paper. Digital platform ecosystem governance refers to a platform owner's decisions and mechanisms that seek to influence complementors and users to build and sustain an ecosystem. The relevance of digital platform ecosystem governance is broadly acknowledged by researchers. However, the extant body of research is fragmented, and varied terminologies are employed, leading to challenges in identifying and recognizing results across different fields. This article provides a multidisciplinary and systematic literature review with the aim of consolidating knowledge on this important topic. Based on an analysis of 103 journal articles and conference papers, this review synthesizes the literature into a conceptual model with five building blocks of platform ecosystem governance. The model aims to create a robust foundation for researchers approaching the topic for the first time and conducting subsequent research. The conceptual model also offers practical guidance for governing ecosystems in a structured manner. Large wood (LW) and log jams have important implications for sediment dynamics within river systems. Although many case studies explore this topic, far fewer synthesize these results at the reach and basin scales. In this paper, we present a conceptual model that relates valley setting and landscape history of forested, mountain streams to spatiotemporal patterns of sediment storage and transport via the formation and decay processes of logjams. This conceptual model explores the function of logjams as sediment transport moderators, significantly influencing sediment retention, channel morphology, and lateral and longitudinal connectivity. Detailed wood inventories, channel topographic surveys, and channel morphology from four case studies are used to illustrate the range of channel responses to logjam formation, evolution, and decay in different valley contexts. Valley setting is shown to influence logjam formation and dynamics by determining the mechanisms and timing of sediment and wood recruitment. In steep and narrow (and thus coupled, confined) reaches, colluvial processes are the dominant mechanisms of wood and sediment delivery, and logjams grow vertically as sediment is stored in a wedge behind the jam (longitudinal disconnectivity). In contrast, in unconfined reaches (decoupled hillslopes), wood and sediment recruitment occurs primarily through fluvial processes, and logjams grow laterally as the channel shifts across the valley bottom. These logjams have long lifespans, often over a century, and gradually release sediment as the logjam decomposes. Sediment deposits stabilized by riparian vegetation behind these structures may persist long after logjam decay. Mixed sediment beaches are globally commonplace, yet little is understood of the extent and behaviour of their nearshore zones, potentially underestimating total cross-shore change. This paper is the first study to investigate the lateral and vertical extent of the active zone of the gravel-rich mixed beach in Pevensey Bay, a study site on the South East UK coastline. Morphodynamic change in the nearshore zone was studied at a range of timescales (days, months, years) suggesting that the width of the active nearshore zone correlated with the magnitude of the peak morphological change, whilst the depth of closure was influenced by bed slope, grain size and local variation in wave conditions. A conceptual model detailing the physical parameters responsible for local variations in the depth of closure was used to help understand differences between the observed and predicted depths of closure. Achieving the objectives of sustainable development in water and agri-food systems requires the utilisation of decision-support tools in stakeholder-driven processes to construct and simulate various scenarios and evaluate the outcomes of associated policy interventions. While it is common practice to involve stakeholders in participatory modelling processes, their comprehensive documentation and the lessons learned remain scarce. In this paper, we share our experience of engaging stakeholders throughout the entire system dynamics modelling process. We draw on two projects implemented in the Volta River Basin, West Africa, to understand the dynamics of water and agri-food systems under changing environmental and socioeconomic conditions. We outline eight key insights and lessons as practical guides derived from each stage of the participatory modelling process, including the pre-workshop stage, problem definition, model conceptualization, simulation model formulation, model testing and verification, and policy design and evaluation. Our findings demonstrate that stakeholders can actively contribute to all phases of the system dynamics modelling process, including parameter estimation, sensitivity analysis, and numerical simulation experiments. However, we encountered notable challenges, including the time-intensive nature of the process, the struggle to reach a consensus on the modelled problem, and the difficulty of translating the conceptual model into a simulation model using stock and flow diagrams – all of which were addressed through a structured facilitation process. While the projects were anchored in the specific context of West Africa, the key lessons and insights highlighted have broader significance, particularly for researchers employing PSDM in regions characterised by multifaceted human-environmental systems and where stakeholder involvement is crucial for holistic understanding and effective policy interventions. The collapse of glacial, permafrost, and ice-rich moraine slopes in high-altitude mountainous areas not only threatens downstream residents and infrastructure but also displaces ice mass to lower and warmer elevations, accelerating glacial ablation to some extent. Despite being considered rare, ice-rich slopes collapse more frequently than commonly thought due to climate change. For example, two adjacent mountain glaciers in the Aru Range of the Tibetan Plateau, characterized by large volumes (68 × 106 m3 and 83 × 106 m3, respectively) and low surface slope angles (12.3° and 12.9°, respectively), collapsed surprisingly in 2016. While the mechanisms behind these collapses have garnered broad attention, the ability to quantitatively assess the instability of ice-rich slopes remains limited due to the complex interplay of multi-physical processes. Taking the Aru glacier collapses as reference cases, this paper presents a conceptual model, implemented through coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical simulation, to evaluate the stability of high-altitude ice-rich slopes due to climate change, rainfall and ice ablation. Results indicate that the methodology captures the effects of temperature change, rainfall and meltwater on the instability events well, demonstrating promising potential in evaluating potential collapse zones of ice-rich slopes similar to the Aru glaciers. Furthermore, the role of climate change in the well-known Aru events is demonstrated using a state-of-the-art global climate reanalysis dataset. This paper addresses the question of whether and how the development and use of a domain-specific modeling method (DSMM) can increase productivity in the development of technical systems in an industrial setting. This is because an essential prerequisite for DSMMs to become established in operational practice is that productivity increases can be achieved with them and qualitative benefits such as quality assurance, innovation potential, and the like can be exploited. After all, managers' decisions are ultimately based on whether or not the use of a new method pays off. We illustrate our findings using the example of a DSMM development for the design and realization of electric vehicle testbeds, which we carried out as part of a cooperation project.
