A scalable papermaking process was employed herein to manufacture cellulosic papers from native and phosphorylated cellulose microfibers (referred to as CMF and PCMF, respectively) impregnated with polyethyleneimine (PEI) for Direct Air Capture (DAC) applications. These papers were analyzed in terms of their physico-chemical properties using several techniques. The impact of PEI content on desorbing the co-adsorbed H 2 O and CO 2 from the air, as well as on the anisotropic microporous network, was explicitly analyzed. The results indicated that phosphorylation promotes the uptake of both CO 2 and H 2 O in the corresponding neat and PEI-loaded papers, reaching a superior CO 2 adsorption capacity of ∼0.7–0.9 mmol.g−1 for PCMF papers versus 0.07–0.3 mmol.g−1 for CMF papers. Furthermore, the CMF and PCMF papers exhibited H 2 O adsorption capacities in the range of 1.5–1.8 mmol.g−1 and 2.2–3.8 mmol.g−1, respectively. This work further highlights the combined role of phosphorylation and favorable PEI impregnation in tuning the cellulose CO 2 adsorption properties under humid conditions, facilitating the rapid release of the adsorbed CO 2 under mid conditions. A completely lab-made paper/graphene-based 3D pop-up device (3D-PP) for the analysis of carbaryl (CBR), a pesticide widely used in crop production, is proposed. The device is composed of a nitrocellulose sensor equipped with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and a foldable 3D paper pop-up. The rationale of the device is based on 3D and 2D configurations to allow the whole analytical procedure. In the 3D arrangement sample pre-concentration and hydrolysis occur; after folding (2D), contact with the complementary nitrocellulose-based sensor is ensured. The sensor, constituted by nanostructured graphene film, allows to obtain the necessary electroanalytical performance. 3D-PP has been shaped and nanostructured using a CO 2 -laser plotter and finished using low-cost benchtop instruments, ensuring in-series manufacturing of the device modules. 3D-PP includes the main steps required for CBR determination, i.e. (i) pre-concentration/purification, (ii) hydrolysis, (iii) medium neutralization, and (iv) electrochemical detection. 3D-PP was challenged for CBR quantification in model solutions and different grain samples. The response linearity (1.5–33 μM) and LOD (0.4 μM) obtained ensures CBR determination at the European-law admitted maximum residue levels (MRL). The present study investigated the fresh, hardened, and physicochemical properties of CO 2 -cured belite-rich cement (BRC) paste incorporating hygiene tissue paper (HTP) as an additive. HTP was added at 0.5% and 1.0% by wt. of BRC paste. The BRC paste was prepared at a water-to-cement ratio of 0.4 and cured under water and carbonation. The results demonstrated that upon carbonation, the incorporation of HTP at 1.0% increases the CO 2 uptake and compressive strength of specimens by 18.60% and 22.29%, respectively. A pore structure analysis shows a decrease in the threshold pore size diameter with an increase in the HTP content for CO 2 -cured samples. An SEM analysis revealed precipitation and impregnation of calcites in and around the HTP microfiber particles. The incorporation of HTP under water curing on the other hand did not significantly influence the strength or the physicochemical properties. It was observed that HTP contributes to improving the properties of CO 2 -cured BRC paste in two ways; the porous structure of HTP provides pathways for the deep permeation of CO 2 into the matrix, and the surface of HTP offers an additional area for calcite precipitation. Currently, developing highly active and low-cost electrocatalytic materials for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an enormously grand challenge. Herein, we developed a novel and highly active Mn doped Co 2 Fe layer double hydroxide (LDH) electrocatalyst for OER. We discovered that these electrocatalytic materials can be directly grown on carbon papers to construct high-specific-surface-area electrode, which shows the lowest overpotential of 266 mV at 10 mA cm−2. Furthermore, after introducing Mn element, DFT + U calculation found that the ∗OOH of Fe-site on Co 2 Fe 0.67 Mn 0.33 LDH could draw more electrons than Co 2 Fe LDH due to the electronegativity differences between Fe-site on Co 2 Fe 0.67 Mn 0.33 LDH and Fe-site on Co 2 Fe LDH, which is reason that the energy level of Fe 3d (e g) was obviously downshifted by d-d repulsion of Mn 3d and Fe 3d in the neighboring sites of Co 2 Fe 0.67 Mn 0.33 LDH after doped Mn element, which leads to reduce charge-transfer energy from O 2p to Fe 3d (e g) to promote oxygen evolution processes for OER. Meanwhile, the band gap is also decreased after doped Mn element in Co 2 Fe LDH due to the downshifted e g orbital energy of Fe 3d. The paper reviews and evaluates a 30-year-long atmospheric CO2 data series measured at the Hegyhátsál tall-tower greenhouse gas monitoring site, a member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW), US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and pan-European Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) networks. The paper also gives the technical description of the monitoring system and its changes over time and introduces the environment of the station. This low-elevation (248 m above mean sea level – m a.m.s.l.), mid-continental central European site shows a 3.90 ± 0.83 µmolmol-1 offset relative to the latitudinally representative marine boundary layer reference concentration, presumably due to European net anthropogenic emissions. The long-term trend (2.20 µmolmol-1yr-1) closely follows the global tendencies. In the concentration growth rate, the ENSO effect is clearly detectable with a 6–7-month lag time. The summer diurnal concentration amplitude is slightly decreasing due to the faster-than-average increase in the nighttime concentrations, which is related to the warming climate. The warming climate also caused a 0.96 ± 0.41 dyr-1 advance at the beginning of the summer CO2 -deficit season in the first half of the measurement period, which did not continue later. Since reservoirs with permeability less than 10 mD are characterized by high injection difficulty, high-pressure drop loss, and low pore throat mobilization during the water drive process, CO2 is often used for development in actual production to reduce the injection difficulty and carbon emission simultaneously. However, microfractures are usually developed in low-permeability reservoirs, which further reduces the injection difficulty of the driving medium. At the same time, this makes the injected gas flow very fast, while the gas utilization rate is low, resulting in a low degree of recovery. This paper conducted a series of studies on the displacement effect of CO2-soluble foaming systems in low-permeability fractured reservoirs (the permeability of the core matrix is about 0.25 mD). For the two CO2-soluble blowing agents CG-1 and CG-2, the effects of the CO2 phase state, water content, and oil content on static foaming performance were first investigated; then, a more effective blowing agent was preferred for the replacement experiments according to the foaming results; and finally, the effects of the blowing agents on sealing and improving the recovery degree of a fully open fractured core were investigated at different injection rates and concentrations, and the injection parameters were optimized. The results show that CG-1 still has good foaming performance under low water volume and various oil contents and can be used in subsequent fractured core replacement experiments. After selecting the injection rate and concentration, the blowing agent can be used in subsequent fractured cores under injection conditions of 0.6 mL/min and 2.80%. In injection conditions, the foaming agent can achieve an 83.7% blocking rate and improve the extraction degree by 12.02%. The global energy system is in transition. It is attempting to reach net‐zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The systemic changes mean that the role of bioenergy will change. The potential of bioenergy to make a flexible contribution to the energy system is key for the achievement of global emission reduction ambitions and the functioning of the low‐carbon energy system and economy. As the volume of sustainably available biomass resources is limited, defining the contributions from bioenergy to a low‐carbon energy system and finding balances – and ideally synergies – between the different possible energy and climate system services that biomass can provide will be very important. The recognized system services include, among others, the flexible operation of bioenergy plants to integrate variable renewable energy sources and to provide negative carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Interest in flexible operation of bioenergy value chains, bioenergy with carbon capture and utilization as well as synergies with renewable hydrogen‐based value chains has increased recently. The objective of this paper is to present a holistic definition of flexible bioenergy as a system service based on the work conducted in International Energy Agency (IEA) Bioenergy Technology Collaboration Programme's Task 44 Flexible Bioenergy and System Integration, and to provide some practical examples. The paper also presents the different bioenergy system services and considers their definitions and interactions, as this is important in energy system design. The definition of flexible bioenergy shows that the flexibility provision from bioenergy goes far beyond the traditional definition of providing short‐term flexibility in the power sector. Indicators to demonstrate the value of services as well as further quantitative assessment of synergies and trade‐offs are needed to valorize the different services from bioenergy and create viable business cases. This study provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements in photocatalytic and electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction using titanium dioxide catalysts. The basic concepts of light absorption, electron transport, and reduction processes are introduced in this paper, which also delves into the specifics of photocatalytic and electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide. The paper highlights the key applications and benefits of titanium dioxide, including its strong stability, outstanding light absorption capacity, and good electron transport performance, in the photocatalytic and electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide. Furthermore, it examines the impact of various surface modification techniques on catalytic performance, as well as the effects of various titanium dioxide catalyst forms on catalytic activity and selectivity in carbon dioxide reduction. The in‐depth analysis exhibit promising catalytic properties and hold significant potential for future advancements. However, some obstacles still need to be overcome, such as increasing catalytic activity and selectivity while minimizing energy dissipation. In order to improve catalytic performance and efficiency, future research should prioritize the optimization of structural design and surface modification techniques for catalysts. Additionally, the paper provides a scientific foundation for accomplishing sustainable carbon conversion, it also calls for additional experimental and theoretical research into the mechanism of action for titanium dioxide catalyst. The synergistic effect between metals is of great significance for improving the performance of materials, but the mechanism of synergistic catalytic of bimetallic has rarely been reported in the hydrolysis of sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 , SB). In this paper, a flower shaped Co 2 FeO 4 catalyst with high catalytic performance was selected from a series of Co x M 3-x O 4 (M = Fe, Ni, Cu) catalysts by controlling the composition. Based on the results of XPS characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculation, the influence of component control on catalytic performance was discussed and explained from the perspective of electronic structure, and the "valence band center" and "D-band center" descriptors were introduced into the SB hydrolysis reaction. The simulation analysis results showed that the synergistic effect between Co–Fe elements resulted in the smallest center shift of the D band, the smallest binding energy of the hydrolysis reaction, and the best promoting effect on the electronic structure, manifested as the best catalytic performance. The calculation results were consistent with the XPS characterization results and the experimental results of hydrolysis performance testing, revealing the principle of bimetallic synergistic effect on catalytic performance. Atmospheric emissions from anthropogenic hotspots, i.e., cities, power plants and industrial facilities, can be determined from remote sensing images obtained from airborne and space-based imaging spectrometers. In this paper, we present a Python library for data-driven emission quantification (ddeq) that implements various computationally light methods such as the Gaussian plume inversion, cross-sectional flux method, integrated mass enhancement method and divergence method. The library provides a shared interface for data input and output and tools for pre- and post-processing of data. The shared interface makes it possible to easily compare and benchmark the different methods. The paper describes the theoretical basis of the different emission quantification methods and their implementation in the ddeq library. The application of the methods is demonstrated using Jupyter notebooks included in the library, for example, for NO 2 images from the Sentinel-5P/TROPOMI satellite and for synthetic CO 2 and NO 2 images from the Copernicus CO 2 Monitoring (CO2M) satellite constellation. The library can be easily extended for new datasets and methods, providing a powerful community tool for users and developers interested in emission monitoring using remote sensing images. Through extensive data research and analysis, this paper comprehensively summarizes the status and key insights of global carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) development. It aims to gain a comprehensive understanding of the relevant policies, technologies, and security measures adopted by major countries in their CCS development processes. Furthermore, it explores the existing status and limitations of China's offshore development efforts, while providing valuable recommendations for enhancing China's offshore CCS initiatives, as well as serving as a reference for other nations worldwide. Offshore CCS plays a crucial role for China to achieve the development target of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, due to its energy structure and industrial distribution. While China possesses significant offshore CCS potential, achieving commercialization still requires substantial efforts. To facilitate the process and draw insights from successful experiences in other countries, this paper illustrates the characteristics and generalizes the experience of offshore CCS industry practices in America, Europe and Japan, respectively. Furthermore, it is recommended that a new round of investigation into offshore CCS potential be conducted, while promoting integrated collaboration between geological surveying and marine scientific research. Key long-lived greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, and N2O) are perhaps among the best-studied components of the Earth's atmosphere today; however, attempts to predict or explain trends or even shorter-term variations of these trace gases are not always successful. Infrared spectroscopy is a recognized technique for the ground-based long-term monitoring of the gaseous composition of the atmosphere. The current paper is focused on the analysis of new data on CO2, CH4, and N2O total columns (TCs) retrieved from high resolution IR solar spectra acquired during 2009–2022 at the NDACC atmospheric monitoring station of St. Petersburg State University (STP station, 59.88°N, 29.83°E, 20 m asl.). The paper provides information on the FTIR system (Fourier-transform infrared) installed at the STP station, and an overview of techniques used for the CO2, CH4, and N2O retrievals. Trends of key greenhouse gases and their confidence levels were evaluated using an original approach which combines the Lomb–Scargle method with the cross-validation and bootstrapping techniques. As a result, the following fourteen-year (2009–2022) trends of TCs have been revealed: (0.56 ± 0.01) % yr−1 for CO2; (0.46 ± 0.02) % yr−1 for CH4; (0.28 ± 0.01) % yr−1 for N2O. A comparison with trends based on the EMAC numerical modeling data was carried out. The trends of greenhouse gases observed at the STP site are consistent with the results of the in situ monitoring performed at the same geographical location, and with the independent estimates of the global volume mixing ratio growth rates obtained by the GAW network and the NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory. There is reasonable agreement between the CH4 and N2O TC trends for 2009–2019, which have been derived from FTIR measurements at three locations: the STP site, Izaña Observatory and the University of Toronto Atmospheric Observatory. A paper-based electrochemical dual-function biosensor capable of determining pH and TCO2 was synthesized for the first time using an iridium oxide pH electrode and an all-solid-state ion electrode (ASIE). In the study, to obtain highly reliable results, the biosensor was equipped with a real-time pH correction function before TCO2 measurements. Compared to traditional liquid-filling carbon dioxide detection sensors, the utilization of ferrocene endows our novel sensor with abundant positive sites, and thus greatly improves its performance. Conversely, the introduction of MXene with conductivity close to that of metals reduces electrode resistance, which is beneficial for accelerating the electrochemical reaction of the sensor and reducing LOD. After optimization, the detection range of TCO2 is 0.095 nM–0.66 M, with a detection limit of as low as 0.023 nM. In addition, the sensor was used in real serum sample-spiked recovery experiments and comparison experiments with existing clinical blood gas analyzers, which confirmed the effectiveness of its clinical application. As the second most predominant greenhouse gas, methane-targeted emission mitigation holds the potential to decelerate the pace of global warming. Satellite remote sensing is an important monitoring tool, and we review developments in the satellite detection of methane. This paper provides an overview of the various types of satellites, including the various instrument parameters, and describes the different types of satellite retrieval algorithms. In addition, the currently popular methane point source quantification method is presented. Based on existing research, we delineate the classification of methane remote sensing satellites into two overarching categories: area flux mappers and point source imagers. Area flux mappers primarily concentrate on the assessment of global or large-scale methane concentrations, with a further subclassification into active remote sensing satellites (e.g., MERLIN) and passive remote sensing satellites (e.g., TROPOMI, GOSAT), contingent upon the remote sensing methodology employed. Such satellites are mainly based on physical models and the carbon dioxide proxy method for the retrieval of methane. Point source imagers, in contrast, can detect methane point source plumes using their ultra-high spatial resolution. Subcategories within this classification include multispectral imagers (e.g., Sentinel-2, Landsat-8) and hyperspectral imagers (e.g., PRISMA, GF-5), contingent upon their spectral resolution disparities. Area flux mappers are mostly distinguished by their use of physical algorithms, while point source imagers are dominated by data-driven methods. Furthermore, methane plume emissions can be accurately quantified through the utilization of an integrated mass enhancement model. Finally, a prediction of the future trajectory of methane remote sensing satellites is presented, in consideration of the current landscape. This paper explores green hydrogen-based carbon dioxide (CO 2) hydrogenation for the production of oxygenates, presenting it as a pivotal strategy for mitigating carbon emissions and advancing sustainable energy solutions. The conversion of CO 2 into oxygenates through hydrogenation emerges as a promising avenue, particularly in the context of transportation applications where the storage of hydrogen poses challenges. The substitution of fossil diesel and gasoline fuels with green hydrogen-derived dimethyl ether, or methanol/ethanol, is advantageous from a life cycle analysis (LCA) CO 2 emission perspective even without the capture of the CO 2. However, the greatest sustainability appeal is contingent on the crucial aspect of capturing CO 2 when utilizing these fuels, which is an aspect currently absent in the literature. This narrative review comprehensively explores catalytic processes, mechanisms, sustainability perspectives, and the current state of research in this evolving area. It encompasses both the production of oxygenates through CO 2 hydrogenation and the subsequent utilization of these oxygenates in fuel cells or combustion systems, emphasizing the integration of CO 2 capture technologies. The paper contributes to the discourse surrounding the environmental and technological dimensions of energy storage ecosystems, providing a holistic view of their potential to foster sustainable energy solutions. Coal-based chemical looping gasification (CCLG) has been proposed as an emergent type of coal gasification technology that produces high-quality syngas by using lattice oxygen from oxygen carrier instead of molecular oxygen. In this paper, the Fe–Ni composite oxygen carrier was synthetized using sol-gel method and the gasification performance of the prepared sample was analyzed by a fixed-bed reactor. The results indicated that the Fe–Ni composite oxygen carrier presented a high carbon conversion of fuel and syngas selectivity during the CCLG process. Additionally, the cycle stability test showed that the carbon conversion of fuel and syngas selectivity did not change significantly with the increase of cyclic frequency. To further study the influence of volatiles released from coal on the gasification performance of oxygen carrier, the interactions between the oxygen carrier samples and char obtained at different pyrolysis temperatures were investigated by a fixed-bed reactor and TG-MS, respectively. The results suggested that the gas products (H 2 , CO, CO 2 and CH 4) yields of char-oxygen carrier were significantly lower than those of coal-oxygen carrier. This paper utilized the hydrothermal method and freeze-drying technology to prepare the macroscopic aerogel structure and powder structure of MOF-808/RGO. Through comparative analysis of aspects such as photocatalytic CO 2 reduction performance, electron transfer efficiency, macroscopic structure, and microstructure, it has been discovered that aerogel structure can provide favorable conditions for mass transfer of CO 2 and water molecules, and light propagation. The introduction of RGO successfully captures electrons and the reduction reaction occurs on the surface of the material. Three-dimensional (3D) macroscopic aerogels have emerged as a critical component in the realm of photocatalysis. Maximizing the integration of materials can result in enhanced efficiency and selectivity in photocatalytic processes. In this investigation, we fabricated MOF-808/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) 3D macroscopic aerogel composite materials employing the techniques of hydrothermal synthesis and freeze-drying. The results revealed that the macroscopic aerogel material exhibited the highest performance in CO 2 reduction to CO, particularly when the concentration of RGO was maintained at 5 mg mL−1. In addition, we synthesized powder materials of MR-5 composite photocatalysts and conducted a comparative analysis in terms of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction performance and electron transfer efficiency. The results show that the macroscopic aerogel material boasts a high specific surface area, an abundant internal pore structure, and increased active sites. These attributes collectively enhance light energy utilization, and electron transfer rates, thereby, improving photothermal and photoelectric conversion efficiencies. Furthermore, we conducted in-situ FT-IR measurements and found that the M/R-5 aerogel exhibited the best CO 2 adsorption capacity under a CO 2 flow rate of 10 mL min−1. The density functional theory results demonstrate the correlation between the formation pathway of the product and the charge transfer pathway. The sintering temperature of an oxide/oxide composite, comprising a barium aluminosilicate (BaAl 2 Si 2 O 8 or BAS) matrix reinforced with alumina fibers, is constrained to avoid a decrease in the mechanical properties of the fibers. This paper highlights the potential of sintering additives in lowering the sintering temperature of the hexagonal BAS (hexacelsian), thereby safeguarding the integrity of the fibers. Consequently, the role of sintering additives, MgO, TiO 2 , and B 2 O 3 , is investigated to determine their impact on the BAS matrix sintering. The addition of 1 wt% of these additives successfully achieved this objective, as confirmed through thermal and microstructural analyses. MgO and TiO 2 facilitated sintering kinetics through a solid-phase mechanism. Concerning the addition of B 2 O 3 , its effect on BAS sintering accelerated densification through a transient liquid-phase mechanism. Another consequence of incorporating these sintering additives is the destabilization of the hexagonal BAS. Rising levels of carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions due to human activities exert a substantial adverse effect on the environment. The conversion of CO 2 into methanol (CH 3 OH) through hydrogenation is a promising way to utilize this greenhouse gas, thus maintaining carbon in the cycle. In terms of sustainability, methanol is of particular interest because of its dual utilization potential as a fuel or base material to produce different chemicals. The versatility of the latter allows it to be used directly as a precursor to produce numerous compounds, including dimethyl ether (DME), olefins, formaldehydes, and hydrocarbon fuels. This paper first reviews the latest developments in catalyst design, focusing on the relationship between catalyst structure and performance. In addition, recent advances in understanding the reaction mechanisms, optimizing catalyst architectures, innovating membrane reactors, and reaction conditions have been discussed. Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage (CCS) is frequently identified as a potential component to achieving a decarbonized power system at least cost; however, power system models frequently lack detailed representation of CO2 transportation, injection, and storage (CTS) infrastructure. In this paper, we present a novel approach to explicitly represent CO2 storage potential and CTS infrastructure costs and constraints within a continental-scale power system capacity expansion model. In addition, we evaluate the sensitivity of the results to assumptions about the future costs and performance of CTS components and carbon capture technologies. We find that the quantity of CO2 captured within the power sector is relatively insensitive to the range of CTS costs explored, suggesting that the cost of CO2 capture retrofits is a more important driver of CCS implementation than the costs of transportation and storage. Finally, we demonstrate that storage and injection costs account for the predominant share of total costs associated with CTS investment and operation, suggesting that pipeline infrastructure costs have limited influence on the competitiveness of CCS. The heat exchanger plays a key role in the S-CO2 power cycle of power generation systems based on waste heat and has a large impact on their cost control and compactness. In this paper, we take the channel shape of a microchannel heat exchanger as the research object and combine orthogonal tests and numerical simulation, taking the microchannel cross-section length/short-axis ratio, volume ratio and filling rate as independent variables, to numerically study multi-channel thermal–fluid–solid coupling and explore the effects of different microchannel cross-section length/short-axis ratios, volume ratios and filling rates on the thermal hydraulic and mechanical properties of the heat exchanger. The results show that a change in the channel volume ratio has a greater impact on the thermal hydraulic performance of the heat exchanger and that its heat transfer performance is only marginally affected by a change in the channel filling rate. Additionally, when other geometric parameters are kept to a certain level, the closer the shape of the channel is to a circle, the better its mechanical properties are. Within the range of permissible designs, a change in the channel volume ratio does not have an obvious impact on the mechanical properties of the microchannels, while the channel filling rate has the most significant impact. Direct air capture (DAC) systems that capture carbon dioxide (CO2) directly from the atmosphere are garnering considerable attention for their potential role as negative emission technologies in achieving net-zero CO2 emission goals. Common DAC technologies are based either on liquid–solvent (L-DAC) or solid–sorbent (S-DAC) to capture CO2. A comprehensive multi-factor comparative economic analysis of the deployment of L-DAC and S-DAC facilities across various United States (U.S.) cities is presented in this paper. The analysis considers the influence of various factors on the favorability of DAC deployment, including local climatic conditions such as temperature, humidity, and CO2 concentrations; the availability of energy sources to power the DAC system; and costs for the transport and storage of the captured CO2 along with the consideration of the regional market and policy drivers. The deployment analysis in over 70 continental U.S. cities shows that L-DAC and S-DAC complement each other spatially, as their performance and operational costs vary in different climates. L-DAC is more suited to the hot, humid Southeast, while S-DAC is preferrable in the colder, drier Rocky Mountain region. Strategic deployment based on regional conditions and economics is essential for promoting the commercial adoptability of DAC, which is a critical technology to meet the CO2 reduction targets. Numerical simulations of the leakage and diffusion behavior of liquid CO2 vessels and security analyses were conducted in this paper, based on a CO2 compression energy storage system. With isentropic choking model, the leakage of vessels under specific conditions was numerically simulated. The influence of different wind speeds on leakage in near-zone field was studied. Meanwhile, the diffusion characteristics of CO2 under three different influencing factors were investigated with the UDM (Unified Dispersion Model) diffusion model, and the diffusion ranges of certain concentrations were detected in the far-zone field. The results show that the low-temperature zone of the 50 mm leak aperture can reach 0.74 m downwind, and basically does not change with wind speed. In the leakage direction, the maximum damage zone of high-speed flow can reach 7.70 m. For the far-zone field, the diffusion area and downwind distance of a dangerous concentration decrease with the increasing of wind speed, and the hazardous area of the low concentration is greatly affected. Based on specific conditions, the maximum diffusion area is 78.46 m2 at 1 m/s wind speed, and the dangerous range reaches 36.32 m downwind. The larger the leakage aperture, the faster the growth trend of the low concentration area under the same conditions. As the equivalent radius of the leakage aperture is less than 50 mm, the maximum diffusion area is proportional to the cubic of the leakage aperture radius. The higher the height of the leakage source, the smaller the concentration range at 1.5 m, which is the average human breathing height. The overall cloud moves upward, meaning that the ground risk decreases. When the leakage aperture is 50 mm and the wind speed is 1 m/s, the maximum cloud diffusion range is 857.35 m2 at the leakage height of 2 m, and the dangerous range reaches 109.53 m downwind, where the maximum concentration is 14.65%. In order to study the cruise safety of aircraft under high altitude and low pressure, the combustion characteristics of protective cover and insulation layer of waxy aviation cable FXL under normal pressure and low pressure are studied in this paper. The minimum ignition time (TTI), the maximum radiation temperature, the flue gas density and the mass loss rate of the protective cover and insulation layer of the waxy FXL aviation cable under 96 kPa and 61 kPa were studied. It is found that the minimum radiation temperature and TTI of the cable at 61 kPa are slightly higher than those at 96 kPa, but the activation energy is basically not affected by the air pressure. The smoke density and smoke composition under 96 kPa and 61 kPa were further studied, and it was found that the smoke density of the cable under 61 kPa sheath and insulation layer was lower than that under 96 kPa. The oxygen, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide components in the flue gas were studied. It was found that the O2 concentration of 96 kPa and 61 kPa cable protective sleeve and insulation layer decreased steadily at first and then increased. The change trend of CO2 concentration was opposite, and the CO concentration showed a double-peak phenomenon. In addition, the mass loss rate (MLR) at different O2 concentrations increases linearly with the increase in O2 concentration. This paper examines the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis in Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) over the period 1981–2018. The link between economic growth and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is analysed. The study includes causality analysis and controls for cross-sectional dependence (CSD), slope heterogeneity, stationarity and cointegration patterns. Mars has nearly ideal conditions for CO2 dissociation by glow discharge plasmas. The directly generation of O2 and CO on Mars was considered to be feasible and practical for in situ resource utilization of Martian atmosphere to get respirable O2 and fuel. In this paper, we conduct several experiments under simulated Martian conditions to investigate the process and how the key parameters effect the generation of O2 and CO in CO2 glow discharge reactions. The yields of new products (i.e., O2 and CO) under various gas discharge work parameters (i.e., discharge power, frequency, voltage, gap between the discharge plane electrodes and gas pressure) were systematically investigated. The reaction mechanism and reaction path of CO2 glow discharge has been discussed. In our study the max yield of O2 by CO2 discharge dissociation was got about 21.8 g/h at 168 W which is very close to that of NASA MOXIE (Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment) at the same power. Decarbonizing the building sector to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs) is a complex issue that poses significant challenges to the scientific community. In this context, the current paper aims to assess the viability of employing incinerated by-products as a sustainable mineral resource to produce sustainable geopolymers. To this end, the study focuses on the formulation of geopolymer binders using fly ash with various proportions (ranging from 0 % to 50 %) of metakaolin (MK), investigating their physico-mechanical, microstructural analysis as well as their sealing capacity. The results indicate that incorporating 30 % MK not only preserves good workability but also significantly improves mechanical strength, ensuring long-term durability by increasing bulk density and concurrently reducing water absorption and harmful porosity. Moreover, the results of the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) demonstrated that the released contaminants remained within the regulatory limits established by the USEPA. The geopolymer binder developed exhibited a significant reduction of 77.23 % and 57.92 % in terms of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO 2 -e) emissions and energy demand compared to conventional cement. In order to guide the operation of the actual cascade system, this paper takes the cascade system as the research object and compares the use of six refrigerant pairs. Unlike the previous single-objective optimization of refrigeration system carbon emissions and other indicators, this research uses a multi-objective optimization algorithm, that is, we consider the cascade system's exergy efficiency and carbon emissions at the same time. We reduce carbon emissions while improving the system's exergy efficiency, and finally find out the specific operating conditions under which the system can realize low-carbon and high-efficiency operation, which further promotes the process of achieving energy saving and emission reduction in factories. The optimization results show that among the six refrigerant pairs, the use of R744-R134a and R744-R290 refrigerant pairs can make the system operate better, but considering the high global warming potential (GWP) of R134a refrigerant, the use of R744-R290 combination is more recommended. Time series of radiative cooling of the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere (UMLT) by carbon dioxide (CO2) are examined for evidence of trends over 20 years. Radiative cooling rates in K day−1 provided by the SABER instrument are converted to time series of infrared power radiated from three distinct layers between 0.1 hPa and 0.0001 hPa (65–105 km). Linear regression against time and a predictor for solar variability provides estimates of the trend in exiting longwave radiation (ELR) from these layers. Trends in ELR are not significantly different from zero at 95% or 99% confidence in each layer. These results demonstrate energy conservation in the UMLT on decadal time scales and show that the UMLT continues to radiate the same amount of energy it receives despite cooling and contracting over two decades. These results are enabled by the long‐term stability of the SABER instrument calibration. Plain Language Summary: The Earth's upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere (UMLT) is the region between approximately 65 and 105 km in altitude. Infrared radiation emitted by CO2 is a fundamental component of the energy budget of the UMLT. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is increasing in this region. The amount of infrared energy emitted by CO2, over time, must balance the amount of energy from sunlight that is absorbed in the UMLT. Observations from orbiting satellites over the past two decades have shown that the temperature in the UMLT is decreasing due to the increasing CO2. A decreasing temperature implies a decrease in infrared energy emitted by an object. Energy conservation, however, requires that the amount of infrared energy radiated from the UMLT balance the amount of energy received, regardless of the temperature. In this paper we show that there is no significant long‐term change with time (i.e., zero trend) in the infrared energy emitted from the UMLT even though the UMLT temperature has been decreasing for the last 20 years (and longer) due to increasing CO2. This result confirms that energy is conserved in a cooling and contracting UMLT. Hydrogenating CO2 to produce light olefins is a highly promising route for olefin synthesis. However, the premise of achieving a high yield is to develop a catalyst with a high conversion rate, selectivity, and stability. This paper reports a Ca2−xKxFe2O5 catalyst with an CO2 conversion of up to 46%, a light olefin selectivity of 34.59%, and an olefin-alkane molar ratio of 8.31. Ca addition increased the oxygen vacancy concentration and strong basic sites of the catalyst, resulting in improved HCOO* intermediate formation, better CO selectivity, and higher CO2 conversion rates. Meanwhile, the addition of K further enhanced the rate of CO2 conversion while also improving the selectivity of light olefins by promoting C–C coupling. Furthermore, the Ca1.0K1.0Fe2O5 catalyst demonstrated no notable deactivation over a period of 72 h, indicating the strong industrial potential of this catalyst. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ecofuels and their feedstock come in three main product classes: electrofuels (e-Fuels), biofuels, and non-biowaste-derived fuels. Ecofuels originate from non-fossil sources, derived from circular raw materials such as non-food organic waste, renewable hydrogen, and captured CO2 through a rapid process of carbon fixation. Proposed regulation drafts under discussion indicate that new fuels would need to reach a substantial degree of climate neutrality. The manufacture of all ecofuels, however, requires energy input to accomplish the conversion of the initial feedstock; their climate neutrality claims stem from the use of renewable electric energy and/or biomasses in the production process, but fossil fuels are still the main primary sources of global (and the EU's) electric power, and most biofuels consumed in the EU transport mix are still crop-based, with potential conflicts with food and land use. Furthermore, entirely neglecting GHG emissions from renewable energy generation is scientifically debatable, as the impact of the energy (and the related GHG emissions) embedded in the materials used to build renewable energy facilities is small, but not nil. As the main contributor of carbon emissions, the low-carbon transition of the industrial sector is important for achieving the goal of carbon dioxide peaking. Hydrogen-enabled industrial energy systems (HIESs) are a promising way to achieve the low-carbon transition of industrial energy systems, since the hydrogen can be well coordinated with renewable energy sources and satisfy the high and continuous industrial energy demand. In this paper, the long-term capacity expansion planning problem of the HIES is formulated from the perspective of industrial parks, and the targets of carbon dioxide peaking and the gradual decommissioning of existing equipment are considered as constraints. The results show that the targets of carbon dioxide peaking before different years or with different emission reduction targets can be achieved through the developed method, while the economic performance is ensured to some extent. Meanwhile, the overall cost of the strategy based on purchasing emission allowance is three times more than the cost of the strategy obtained by the developed method, while the emissions of the two strategies are same. In addition, long-term carbon reduction policies and optimistic expectations for new energy technologies will help industrial parks build more new energy equipment for clean transformation. A carbon paper‐based gas diffusion electrode (GDE) is used with a bismuth(III) subcarbonate active catalyst phase for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 in a gas/electrolyte flow‐by configuration electrolyser at high current density. It is demonstrated that in this configuration, the gas and catholyte phases recombine to form K2CO3/KHCO3 precipitates to an extent that after electrolyses, vast amount of K+ ions is found by EDX mapping in the entire GDE structure. The fact that the entirety of the GDE gets wetted during electrolysis should, however, not be interpreted as a sign of flooding of the catalyst layer, since electrolyte perspiring through the GDE can largely be removed with the outflow gas, and the efficiency of electrolysis (toward the selective production of formate) can thus be maintained high for several hours. For a full spatial scale quantitative monitoring of electrolyte penetration into the GDE, (relying on K+ ions as tracer) the method of inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP–MS) assisted energy dispersive X‐ray (EDX) tomography is introduced. This new, cheap and robust tomography of non‐uniform aspect ratio has a large planar span that comprises the entire GDE surface area and a submicrometer depth resolution, hence it can provide quantitative information about the amount and distribution of K+ remnants inside the GDE structure, in three dimensions. To reveal the deflagration hazard and propagation law of hydrogen-enriched natural gas (H 2 NG) in closed spaces, this paper studied the deflagration characteristic parameters under different H 2 blended ratio (λ) and inert gas dilution fraction (X dilution) in slender closed pipelines with steel circular hole obstacles. The results indicate that the positive feedback mechanism's sustained effect, failure, and re-action leads to a "three-zone" distribution of H 2 NG explosion overpressure along the pipeline, namely the acceleration, attenuation, and rebound zones. The maximum explosion overpressure (P max), maximum pressure rise rate ((dP/dt) max), and peak shock wave propagation velocity (V p) all increase with the increase of λ. The rise of λ has the most significant enhancement effect on (dP/dt) max , while the enhancement effect on V p is the smallest. This is because the main reasons affecting their increase are different. P max , (dP/dt) max , and V p exhibit exponential decay with increased N 2 and CO 2. However, CO 2 has a more significant inhibitory effect on the H 2 NG deflagration process. Climatologies, which depict mean fields of oceanographic variables on a regular geographic grid, and atlases, which provide graphical depictions of specific areas, play pivotal roles in comprehending the societal vulnerabilities linked to ocean acidification (OA). This significance is particularly pronounced in coastal regions where most economic activities, such as commercial and recreational fisheries and aquaculture industries, occur. In this paper, we unveil a comprehensive data product featuring coastal ocean acidification climatologies and atlases, encompassing the fugacity of carbon dioxide, pH on the total scale, total hydrogen ion content, free hydrogen ion content, carbonate ion content, aragonite saturation state, calcite saturation state, Revelle factor, total dissolved inorganic carbon content, and total alkalinity content. These variables are provided on 1° × 1° spatial grids at 14 standardized depth levels, ranging from the surface to a depth of 500 m, along the North American ocean margins, defined as the region between the coastline and a distance of 200 nautical miles (∼370 km) offshore. The climatologies and atlases were developed using the World Ocean Atlas (WOA) gridding methods of the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) based on the recently released Coastal Ocean Data Analysis Product in North America (CODAP-NA), along with the 2021 update to the Global Ocean Data Analysis Project version 2 (GLODAPv2.2021) data product. As the conventional inert gas, it is used for the prevention and control of coal's spontaneous combustion, mainly N2 and CO2. However, there is limited research focusing on the inerting effect of composite inert gas. This paper studied the impact of using a premixed inert gas (N2 accounted for 50%, 60%, 70%, and 80%) instead of CO2 on the inerting effect of nearly horizontal and gently inclined goaf by building a physical similarity simulation experiment platform. The experimental results showed that the inerting effect of premixed inert gas was better than that of CO2. For instance, in a nearly horizontal goaf, the inerting effect of the premixed inert gas was optimal when the N2 accounted for 70%. The average O2 concentration in the monitored area decreased from 9.7% with CO2 to 6.4%. In addition, in the gently inclined goaf, the premixed inert gas exhibited an accumulation state similar to CO2, primarily occurring in the lower part region adjacent to the working face. Furthermore, the accumulation state of premixed inert gas was inversely proportional to its inerting effect. The urgent need to find mitigating pathways for limiting world CO2 emissions to net zero by 2050 has led to intense research on CO2 sequestration in deep saline reservoirs. This paper reviews key advancements in lab- and simulation-scale research on petrophysical, geochemical, and mineralogical changes during CO2–brine–rock interactions performed in the last 25 years. It delves into CO2 MPD (mineralization, precipitation, and dissolution) and explores alterations in petrophysical properties during core flooding and in static batch reactors. These properties include changes in wettability, CO2 and brine interfacial tension, diffusion, dispersion, CO2 storage capacity, and CO2 leakage in caprock and sedimentary rocks under reservoir conditions. The injection of supercritical CO2 into deep saline aquifers can lead to unforeseen geochemical and mineralogical changes, possibly jeopardizing the CCS (carbon capture and storage) process. There is a general lack of understanding of the reservoir's interaction with the CO2 phase at the pore/grain scale. This research addresses the gap in predicting the long-term changes of the CO2–brine–rock interaction using various geochemical reactive transport simulators. Péclet and Damköhler numbers can contribute to a better understanding of geochemical interactions and reactive transport processes. Additionally, the dielectric constant requires further investigation, particularly for pre- and post-CO2–brine–rock interactions. For comprehensive modeling of CO2 storage over various timescales, the geochemical modeling software called the Geochemist's Workbench was found to outperform others. Wettability alteration is another crucial aspect affecting CO2–brine–rock interactions under varying temperature, pressure, and salinity conditions, which is essential for ensuring long-term CO2 storage security and monitoring. Numerical simulation based on CO2-EOR plays an indispensable role in the study of the mechanism of CO2 flooding and buried percolation, allowing for technical indicators to be selected and EOR/EGR prediction to be improved for reservoir engineers. This paper discusses the numerical simulation techniques related to CO2 flooding and storage, including mathematical models and solving algorithms. A multiphase and multicomponent mathematical model is developed to describe the flow mechanism of hydrocarbon components–CO2–water underground and to simulate the phase diagram of the components. The two-phase P-T flash calculation with SSI (+DEM) and the Newton method is adopted to obtain the gas–liquid phase equilibrium parameters. The extreme value judgment of the TPD function is used to form the phase stability test and miscibility identification model. A tailor-made multistage preconditioner is built to solve the linear equation of the strong-coupled, multiphase, multicomponent reservoir simulation, which includes the variables of pressure, saturation, and composition. The multistage preconditioner improves the computational efficiency significantly. A numerical simulation of CO2 injection in a carbonate reservoir in the Middle East shows that it is effective for researching the recovery factor and storage quantity of CO2 flooding based on the above numerical simulation techniques. In this work, we focus on the prediction of the influence of CO2 laser parameters on the kerf properties of cut spruce wood. Laser kerf cutting is mainly characterized by the width of kerf and the width of the heat-affected zone, which depend on the laser power, cutting speed, and structure of the cut wood, represented by the number of cut annual rings. According to the measurement results and ANN prediction results, for lower values of the laser power (P) and cutting speed (v), the effect of annual rings (ARs) is non-negligible. The results of the sensitivity analysis show that the effect of v increases at higher energy density (E) values. With P in the range between 100 and 500 W, v values between 3 and 50 mm·s−1, and AR numbers between 3 and 11, the combination of P = 200 W and v = 50 mm·s−1, regardless of the AR value, leads to the best cut quality for spruce wood. In this paper, the main goal is to show how changes in the input parameters affect the characteristics of the cutting kerf and heat-affected zones for all possible input parameter values. In this paper, we propose a new extension of the Vasicek model to the multivariate case and analyze its characteristics, including its probability density function, marginal trends, and correlation functions. We also conduct statistical estimation on the model, including likelihood parameter estimation and estimation of the marginal trend and correlation functions. To validate the effectiveness of our proposed model, we use simulation studies and examine the goodness of fit. Additionally, we apply our model to a bivariate case involving the analysis of CO 2 and N 2 O concentrations. We describe the data, fit the bivariate Vasicek stochastic diffusion model, and compare it with the univariate case. This paper presents and analyzes a finite volume scheme for a fully degenerate parabolic system modeling the compressible two-phase flow, such as water-gas, problem in porous media considering the effects of temperature. The problem is written in terms of the phase formulation, i.e. the saturation of one phase, the pressure of the second phase and the temperature are primary unknowns. We use a first-order time implicit Euler scheme. The spatial discretization uses a fully coupled fully implicit cell-centered two-point flux approximation scheme where upwinding of the flux across an interface between two control volumes is performed for each fluid phase. Under physically relevant assumptions on the data, we prove the maximum principle for both saturation and temperature. We obtain a priori estimates and we show that the discrete problem is well posed. Also, we exploit various a priori estimates as well as compactness arguments to establish the convergence of the numerical scheme toward the weak solution. The open-source platform DuMu X was employed for the implementation of the developed algorithm based on the above scheme. Numerical result are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of this scheme. The test addresses the evolution in 2D of CO 2 injection into a layered aquifer. The algorithm's convergence with first order is validated by our numerical results, which support the theoretical results. Chemical equilibrium represents the highest efficiency achievable by a thermochemical cycle under specific operational conditions. This study delves into two-step thermochemical water splitting cycles, which dissociate water into hydrogen (H 2) and oxygen (O 2) via sequential thermal reduction and re-oxidation processes. Building on the thermal reduction analysis presented in Part 1, this paper zeroes in on the re-oxidation reaction within the optimal reactor framework – the counter-current reactor. It elucidates the equilibrium pathway, delineating the progression of chemical equilibrium at each incremental stage of re-oxidation. Using ceria (CeO 2) as a model redox-active metal oxide, the investigation analyzes the influence of operational parameters on the re-oxidation reaction. Findings reveal the theoretical feasibility of maintaining near constant temperature (±2.5 °C) during re-oxidation, achieving a total extent of reduction of 0.038 and a hydrogen conversion yield of 32%. While near adiabatic operation is also achievable, practicality is constrained by a maximum total extent of reduction of 6.5·10−3. The study also explores the economic implications of thermochemical water splitting, particularly focusing on the steam-to-hydrogen output ratio. It highlights the severe economic hurdles associated with hydrogen yields below approximately 1%. Furthermore, the investigation reveals that the addition of inert gas to the re-oxidation step offers no significant advantages. Concluding the analysis, a comparative assessment exposes negligible differences in outcomes when substituting carbon dioxide (CO 2) for water (H 2 O) as the oxidant in low-temperature scenarios (800 °C). Utilizing carbon dioxide in chemical processes is one of the suggested remedies for reducing its atmospheric concentration. In this paper, the simulation of the propylene carbonate production process using 1,2-propanediol and carbon dioxide has been performed. The impact of temperature was examined between 75 and 400°C. It has been found that as temperature rises, reaction conversion increases. Additionally, the impact of recycling ratio was examined in the range of 0.1–0.5, which demonstrates that a rise in the recycle ratio results in a fall in conversion. Furthermore; it was observed that the pressure initially increases the solubility of carbon dioxide in 1,2-propanediol and improves the conversion of the reaction, but when enough carbon dioxide is supplied in the reaction, increasing the pressure does not affect the corresponding reaction. The effect of all studied parameters depends on the residence time of the reactants in the reactor. Investigating the interaction of parameters and optimizing the process has shown several optimal point of the process such as temperature of 295 °C, a recycle ratio 0.1, feed ratio 0.8 and a residence time of 12.61 h, with the related conversion being 59.6%. The objective of this paper was to study the sCO2 cycle as a waste heat recovery system for a 180 kW biogas engine. The research methodology adopted was numerical simulations through two models built in different programs: Aspen HYSYS and GT Suite. The models were used to optimize the design and thermodynamic parameters of a CO2 cycle in terms of system power, system efficiency, expander, and compressor efficiency. Depending on the objective function, the sCO2 cycle could provide additional power ranging from 27.9 to 11.3 kW. Based on the calculation performed, "Recuperated cycle at maximum power" was selected for further investigation. The off-design analysis of the system revealed the optimum operating point. Syngas, which is used as both a fuel and a raw material, presents numerous safety risks during its utilization. In this paper, the effects of H 2 /CO ratio (R = 0%, 30%, 50%, 70% and 100%) and CO 2 dilution ([CO 2 ] = 0%–20%) on the explosion behaviors of syngas/air mixtures with different equivalence ratios (φ = 0.8, 1.0, 1.6, and 2.5) are examined via experiments and numerical calculations. The results show that the peaks of explosion pressure and OH* spectral intensity are significantly influenced by the H 2 percentage in the syngas. The introduction of CO 2 notably decreases these parameters in oxygen-rich and severe oxygen-poor states. Additionally, the flame propagation speed noticeably increases with increasing H 2 proportion in the syngas. The influence of CO 2 on the buoyancy instability of the spherical flame of syngas is considered negligible when compared to that of other combustible gases, such as CH 4. Nevertheless, the presence of CO 2 decreases the density ratio between the unburned gas and burned gas and increases the flame thickness of syngas/air mixtures. This trend reduces the cellular instability of the spherical flame, particularly in severe oxygen-poor states. Notably, there is a definite correlation between the formation of cellular flames and the rise rate of explosion pressure. The cellular structure on the flame surface becomes more pronounced when the rise rate of explosion pressure increases. Conversely, it develops later or is noticeably inhibited. Furthermore, the main reaction pathways are H 2 → ∙OH → H 2 O 2 → H 2 O and H 2 → ∙OH → CO → CO 2 during the syngas explosion process. ∙OH is critical in the entire chain reaction because it promotes the conversion of H 2 to H 2 O and acts as a vital connection between the reactants H 2 and CO in the explosion process. • The P max and I max were investigated with H 2 addition and CO 2 dilution. • The cellular instability of the spherical flame was analyzed. • The interaction of flame development and explosion pressure was revealed. • The main reaction pathways during the syngas explosion process were examined. Legislation regulating the sustainability requirements for hydrogen technologies relies more and more on life cycle assessments (LCAs). Due to different scopes and development processes, different pieces of EU legislation refer to different LCA methodologies, with differences in the way multifunctional processes (i.e., co-productions, recycling, and energy recovery) are treated. These inconsistencies arise because incentive mechanisms are not standardized across sectors, even though the end product, hydrogen, remains the same. The goal of this paper is to compare the life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of hydrogen from four production pathways depending on the multifunctional approach prescribed by the different EU policies (e.g., using substitution or allocation). The study reveals a large variation in the LCA results. For instance, the life-cycle GHG emissions of hydrogen co-produced with methanol is found to vary from 1 kg CO 2 -equivalent/kg H 2 (when mass allocation is considered) to 11 kg CO 2 -equivalent/kg H 2 (when economic allocation is used). These inconsistencies could affect the market (e.g., hydrogen from a certain pathway could be considered sustainable or unsustainable depending on the approach) and the environment (e.g., pathways that do not lead to a global emission reduction could be promoted). To mitigate these potential negative effects, we urge for harmonized and strict guidelines to assess the life-cycle GHG emissions of hydrogen technologies in an EU policy context. Harmonization should cover international policies too, to avoid the same risks when hydrogen will be traded based on its GHG emissions. Emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) from municipal solid waste (MSW) in North Macedonia are a serious issue for the environment and major efforts are needed to mitigate climate change. In order to determine the current situation with the GHG emissions in North Macedonia, several calculations were made and results and proposals for reduction of GHG emissions, related with waste, are presented in this paper. Municipal solid waste (MSW) management, primarily through landfilling, is a major contributor to GHG emissions in North Macedonia. The anaerobic decomposition of organic waste in landfills generates methane (CH4), a strong greenhouse gas with a high global warming potential, even 25 times more than carbon dioxide (CO2). Furthermore, open waste burning and inadequate waste management techniques lead to the release of CO2, nitrous oxide (N2O), and other pollutants. Despite efforts to mitigate GHG emissions from waste, challenges persist due to inadequate waste management infrastructure, limited waste reduction and recycling initiatives, and failure to implement regulatory frameworks. These challenges exacerbate the environmental impacts of waste management and hinder progress towards sustainable development goals. To tackle GHG emissions from waste in North Macedonia, a comprehensive approach is required that includes legislative interventions, technological advances, and public engagement techniques. Improving waste management infrastructure, promoting waste reduction and recycling, investing in waste-derived renewable energy, and enhancing regulatory enforcement are among the key recommendations. This paper provides an educational tool to help the public better understand the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the food they choose to eat on a daily basis. Using balloons filled with the representative volume of GHGs emitted through the growth, harvest, production, and transportation of various food choices, participants are able to visualize the impact of their food choices without the burden of analyzing a graph or table. Additionally, displaying the typical GHG metric of equivalent kilograms of carbon dioxide (kg CO2e) in the volume this gas would occupy at standard pressure and temperature allows for greater clarity in these results. Distribution methods for this visualization tool described herein range from science classrooms to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) outreach events and to restaurants and grocery stores. Several tools are provided as part of this research, including a spreadsheet that incorporates these calculations, presentation slides, a worksheet for the in-class method, and poster images for eateries. For each method, participants are asked to select a protein, vegetable, and starch option to fill their plate and the resulting GHG volume is then calculated based on their selections. The preparation of CO2-containing polymers with improved degradation properties is still very challenging. An elegant method for preparing these polymers is to use CO2-containing monomers in ring-opening polymerizations (ROP) which are particularly gentle and energy-saving methods. However, cyclic carbonates are required for this which are not readily available. This paper therefore aims to present the optimization and comparison of two synthesis methods to obtain cyclic carbonates for ROP. Within this work, cyclic styrene carbonate was synthesized from readily available raw materials by using a Jacobsen catalyst for the reaction of styrene oxide and carbon dioxide or an organocatalyst for the transesterification of methyl carbonate with 1-phenyl-1,2-ethanediol. The latter performed with 100% selectivity to the desired styrene carbonate, which was succesfully tested in ROP, producing an amorphous thermoplastic polymer with a TG of 185 °C. Increased warming in the Arctic is of great concern. This is particularly due to permafrost degradation, which is expected to accelerate microbial breakdown of soil organic carbon, with its further release into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide (CO2). The fine-scale variability of CO2 fluxes across highly mosaic Arctic tundra landscapes can provide us with insights into the diverse responses of individual plant communities to environmental change. In the paper, we contribute to filling existing gaps by investigating the variability of CO2 flux rates within different landscape units for dominant vegetation communities and plant species across typical tundra of the southern part of the Taimyr Peninsula, Siberia. In general, the variability of soil CO2 flux illustrates a four-fold increase from non-vascular vegetation, mainly lichens and mosses (1.05 ± 0.36 µmol m−2 s−1), towards vascular plants (3.59 ± 0.51 µmol m−2 s−1). Barren ground ("frost boils") shows the lowest value of 0.79 ± 0.21 µmol m−2 s−1, while considering the Arctic "browning" phenomenon, a further substantial increase of CO2 flux can be expected with shrub expansion. Given the high correlation with top soil temperature, well-drained and relatively dry habitats such as barren ground and non-vascular vegetation are expected to be the most sensitive to the observed and projected temperature growth in the Arctic. For mixed vegetation and vascular species that favor wetter conditions, soil moisture appears to play a greater role. Based on the modeled seasonal pattern of soil CO2 flux and precipitation records, and applying the rainfall simulations in situ we outlined the role of precipitation across enhanced CO2 emissions (i.e., the "Birch" effect). We found that a pulse-like growth of soil CO2 fluxes, observed within the first few minutes after rainfall on vegetated plots, reaches 0.99 ± 0.48 µmol m−2 s−1 per each 1 mm of precipitation, while barren ground shows 55–70% inhibition of CO2 emission during the first several hours. An average additive effect of precipitation on soil CO2 flux may achieve 7–12% over the entire growing season, while the projected increased precipitation regime in the Arctic may strengthen the total CO2 release from the soil surface to the atmosphere during the growing season.
