The paper aims to critically analyse the development dichotomies and socio-ecological concerns inherent in a controversial megaproject in Kerala – the Semi High-Speed Rail Corridor, also known as the Silverline Project – through a political ecology lens. The mainstream discourses of development in an extractivist political economy focus on economic growth and technological advancement without a critical social and ecological security assessment. Megaprojects are presented as dream projects and symbols of modernity, even when fragmentation and degradation of socio-ecological systems are apparent. The paper explores the multiple strategies used by the State to legitimising the project, which includes overriding or diluting the regulatory framework for conservation, greenwashing, manipulative reductionism etc. It argues that an inclusive development discourse should go beyond perceiving environment and development as a binary opposition and thrive for a critical and reflexive conceptualisation and practice. Ecological networks are an effective strategy to maintain regional ecological security. However, current research on ecological network construction in areas with large-scale resource extraction is limited. Moreover, classic ecological network construction methods do not perform satisfactorily when implemented in heavily damaged mining landscapes. Taking the example of Liaoning Province, China, a framework for stepwise renewal of ecological networks was proposed, which integrates basic ecological sources and other sources that include mining areas. The framework was based on multi-source ecological environment monitoring data, and all potential ecological sources were extracted and screened using an MSPA model and the area threshold method. Further, ecological sources were classified into two types and three levels based on the influence of abandoned mines and the characteristics of ecosystem services in the ecological sources. Ecological corridors were extracted using the MCR model. An ecological corridor optimization process based on combining the gravity model with addition and removal rules of corridors was proposed. The results indicated that the basic ecological network in Liaoning Province included 101 ecological sources and 162 ecological corridors, and the supplementary ecological network included 28 ecological sources and 67 ecological corridors. The ecological sources were divided into two types, and corridors were divided into three types. The basic ecological network exhibited a spatial distribution of discrete connections in the west and close connections in the east. Changes in ecological network topological indicators indicated that a supplementary ecological network strengthened the structural performance of the regional ecological network, expanding spatial coverage, filling hollow areas, and enriching local details of the regional ecological network. Regulation strategies were proposed for ecological sources with different connection modes. The number of ecological sources implementing restrictive development, pattern optimization, and protective development were 101, 12, and 16, respectively. This paper provides a constructing framework of ecological networks adapted for resource-based regions. With the world's rapid urban development, it has been observed that space for sociability has decreased. To overcome the impact of the same, streets should develop as an urban space along transit corridors. These spaces encourage meaning and identity creation by offering visual quality to everyone. This paper focuses on assessing parameters through which an urban streetscape along transit corridor can be analyzed to enhance visual quality. Ecoepidemiology is an emerging field that attempts to explain how biotic, environmental, and even social factors influence the dynamics of infectious diseases. Particularly in vector-borne diseases, the study under this approach offers us an overview of the pathogens, vectors, and hosts that coexist in a given region and their ecological determinants. As a result of this, risk predictions can be established in a changing environment and how it may impact human populations. This paper is aimed at evaluating some ecoepidemiological characteristics of Chagas disease in a natural reserve in southeastern Mexico that borders human settlements. We carry out a cross-sectional study in 2022 where we search insects manually and with light traps. We set traps for small mammals and bats and conducted interviews with the inhabitants living around the study site. We identified the presence of Triatoma dimidiata and T. huehuetenanguensis species with a percentage of TcI T. cruzi infection of 68.4% (95% CI: 66.9-69.9). Temperature and humidity were not determining factors for the probability of insect capture. Of the 108 wild mammals (Chiroptera, Rodentia, and Didelphimorphia), none was infected with T. cruzi. Knowledge about Chagas disease in nearby inhabitants is poor, and some characteristics were found on the periphery of dwellings that could offer a refuge for insect vectors. With this information, surveillance strategies can be generated in the study area that reduce the risk of transmission of T. cruzi parasite to humans, and it is expected to motivate the use of this field in future research. In the field of world heritage conservation, there has been broad consensus on carrying out heritage conservation research on the basis of spatial integration and interregional and international cooperation. However, there are still many deficiencies in the integration of culture with the environment, regional economic and social development, and the regional, holistic and multimodal conservation and utilization of cultural heritage sites. In China, the Dongjiang-Hanjiang River Basin is a representative area of substantial cultural and ecological value for both Guangdong Province and the whole country. This paper uses the morphological spatial pattern analysis and the minimum cumulative resistance model to integrate cultural ecology sources and establish a cross-regional and large-scale cultural ecology network system that includes 1 main corridor, 22 important corridors and 17 secondary corridors. In addition, based on identified cultural landscape nodes and cultural ecology services, the economy of the cultural ecology corridor could be developed with large-scale co-construction, co-governance and shared working mechanisms to overcome administrative limits and realize the conservation and utilization of multimodal and large-scale heritage sites. This approach has strong theoretical and practical significance for innovative methods in cultural ecology research, as well as for new content in the research of Lingnan culture, ecosystem restoration, and the economic and social development of towns and villages. The loess hilly and gully areas have broken terrain, vertical and horizontal ravines and fragile ecological environments. Improving the resilience of the regional ecological space is conducive to improving the quality of the local ecological environment. With the ecological space of the Yanhe River Basin selected as the research object, this paper constructs a research framework of "network identification topology-resilience evaluation-spatial optimization" and uses morphological spatial pattern analysis (MSPA) and the minimum cumulative resistance model (MCR) to identify ecological spatial networks. Based on circuit theory, the ecological pinch point is identified, the ecological spatial network is optimized, and scenario simulation is performed. Through complex network theory and related indicators, the ecological spatial resilience of the basin is evaluated, and the hierarchical optimization strategy of the ecological space is confirmed. According to the ecological function of the source area and the results of the resilience evaluation, the boundaries of the protected control area, guidance development area, remediation area, and maintenance and improvement area of the basin are delineated. The importance of ecological source and corridor protection is classified, and corresponding protection strategies are proposed. The research results can provide theoretical support and practical guidance for the territorial spatial planning and ecological space construction of the Yanhe River Basin and provide a reference for the ecological restoration, resource development and environmental governance of the Yanhe River Basin. Jianghan Plain is an important grain-producing area in China, and the transformation of the natural environment by the long-term polder activities of the people in this area has created a characteristic polder landscape. After 2000, urbanization has led to the destruction of ecosystems in these polder landscapes, especially in sensitive areas at the urban–rural interface. ESP can help mitigate this threat by systematically identifying and connecting ecologically significant areas to enhance ecosystem stability and sustainability. In this paper, taking Dongxihu Polder as an example, we apply multi-source remote sensing data to develop LER and LUC models. Combining these with MCR model, we construct an ESP for Dongxihu Polder. The study shows that (1) the growth of LER and LUC in Dongxihu Polder is characterized by "strong dynamics, high complexity and weak protection", which is closely related to the urban expansion of the urban–rural boundary area; (2) Watersheds, woodlands, and farmlands play an important role in controlling LERs and LUCs, so we identified 33 ecologically important source areas that are mainly concentrated in these regions; (3) In this paper, 46 ecological strategic nodes and 16 ecological corridors were extracted to construct the Dongxihu Polder ESP of "one ring, five axes, multiple points and multiple chains", and suggested specific optimization strategies. • A practical and feasible protection strategy for EC maintaining in highly urbanized areas was proposed. • Key patches for EC maintaining were identified by using stepping stone and complex network theories. • The protection rate for key patches by the new policies were assessed. Maintaining and restoring ecological connectivity (EC) are important measures of mitigating habitat isolation caused by urbanization. Considering the prominent contradiction of land use in highly urbanized areas, the EC protection measures proposed in the previous studies, such as expanding the ecological sources and widening the ecological corridors, are unrealistic. By using the stepping-stone and complex network theories, this paper simulated the ecological network (EN), evaluated the centrality of each ecological source and stepping-stone, and analysed the network robustness under different damage scenarios, then identified the optimal strategy and key patches for EC maintaining. Meanwhile, this paper evaluated whether the key patches are protected by China's new policies, which are, Ecological Protection Red Line (EPRL) and the Three Lines One Permit (TLOP). The results were as follows: (1) The EN is composed of 53 ecological sources and 291 stepping-stones, with 591 links between them. (2) The network stability can be optimally maintained by prioritizing the protection of stepping-stones with high centrality. (3) The 53 ecological sources and 51 stepping-stones with the highest centrality can ensure the stable operation of the EN, that is, they are key patches for EC maintaining. (4) Compared with EPRL, the protection rate for ecological sources and stepping-stones are significantly improved by TLOP; however, stepping-stones with high centrality require stronger protection. Urban ecological corridors are essential for sustainable urban development, but determining their width remains challenging. This paper addresses this issue by focusing on the unique habitat requirements of urban undercanopy bird species. We employ Species Distribution Model to simulate their potential living spaces in Shanghai and quantify their functional connectivity in urban mobility. We then use segmented linear regression models to identify turning points in functional connectivity within different buffer zones, which represent the physical width of the corridor. Our findings show that urban undercanopy birds are less sensitive to human activity and building distribution compared to surface temperature, land cover types, and vegetation canopy height. We also find that conventional linear weighting methods tend to overestimate the impact of environmental factors on undercanopy birds, leading to subtle deviations in corridor path recognition. Finally, we demonstrate that employing segmented linear regression helps to quantify the turning points of functional connectivity for each urban ecological corridor, allowing us to determine their physical width range. • To understand the carbon sequestration capacity of vegetation in Southeast Tibet over the past ten years, laying a scientific foundation for addressing ecological issues, landscape patterns, and developing ecological networks in Southeast Tibet. • The number of ecological nodes and corridors has been decreasing annually. • Ecological construction in the western regions should continue to be strengthened. • Ecological stepping stones should be added, and the length of corridors should be reduced to improve ecosystem CUE. Currently, with the gradual advancement of urbanization and industrialization, ecological patches are severely fragmented and corridors are cut off, leading to the construction of regional ecological networks that can connect fragmented patches and corridors with regional characteristics. However, there is limited research on the relationship between ecological networks and Carbon Utilization Efficiency (CUE) based on complex network theory. This paper takes the ecologically fragile Southeast Tibet as the research area and investigates the variation patterns of CUE through the establishment of ecological spatial networks. The Graphab Model is employed to extract the ecological space network of Southeast Tibet. The Graphab Model integrates the complex network with the ecological space network to compute the topological index of ecological nodes and the overall ecological network. Later, MOD17A2HGF GPP and MOD17A2HGF PSN net data from 2013 to 2021 are used as the primary data for calculating the CUE of ecological nodes. The connection between topological index and ecological nodes is analysed. The results indicate that, with interannual variations, ecological nodes dropped by 15, and the number of ecological galleries decreased by 7. However, the average values of various topological indices showed an increasing trend, suggesting that the ecological remediation items in Southeast Tibet have made some achievements. Nevertheless, the analysis of CUE in Southeast Tibet reveals a downward trend in the carbon fixation rate of vegetation in recent years. Through correlation analysis, it was found that the correlation between various topological indices and CUE was the lowest and insignificant in 2013, while from 2015 to 2021, all topological indices were significantly positively correlated with CUE. Through Principal Component Analysis (PCA), It is recommended to reduce and shorten redundant ecological corridors by aggregating small ecological patches and increasing stepping stone patches, and increase ecological galleries to enhance the carbon fixation ability of plants. Existing methods for constructing Landscape Ecological Networks (LEN) either focus on functional attributes or structural attributes and also do not address the dynamic impact of urban development on ecological spaces. To address these limitations, this paper proposed evaluating the maximum connectivity (k) of potential LEN, composed of existing ecological spaces, using a network fault tolerance index. We then used graph-based networking technology to construct the optimal LEN structure based on this index. Specifically speaking, first, we identified the existing LEN with the highest ecosystem service capacity and lowest ecological cost in the study area. Using four landscape pattern metrics, we comprehensively evaluated the fault tolerance index as the maximum connectivity k of potential LEN and determined that k = 7. We then modeled the existing LEN as a weighted graph and transformed the network optimization problem into a k-edge addition problem. This calculation yielded seven LEN schemes, each corresponding to different priority orders of new ecological corridors based on k value. This index captures changes in ecological space patterns and offers diverse LEN optimization solutions. This paper proposes a network structure that simulates regions' dual positive and negative ecological linkages based on ecological protection and risk management perspectives. This network structure model simulates positive and negative ecological flows between regions by establishing ecologically discrete, isolated, structurally and functionally interconnected regions. We first define the concepts related to ecological networks and risk networks. Taking Shaanxi Province as a case study, we construct a comprehensive ecological security pattern based on identifying ecological and risk networks. (1) Our results show 30 ecological and 34 risk source patches in our study area. These patches are connected through 103 ecological and 77 risk corridors, respectively. (2) Most of the ecological nodes, ecological corridors, risk nodes, risk corridors, and integrated ecological and risk nodes in the ecological security pattern of our study area are distributed along the watershed. Additionally, some risk nodes and risk corridors are distributed along the transportation network. Our study area shows a comprehensive ecological security pattern of protection and control with emphasis on protection in the south, protection in the center, and control in the north. (3) Further analysis showed that the intersection of ecological corridors and risk corridors with different degrees of importance would form four types of integrated ecological and risk nodes. The first type of integrated node has a strong isolation effect on both ecological and risk sources; the second type of integrated node has a weak isolation effect on ecological source sites but a strong isolation effect on risk source sites; the third type of integrated node has a strong isolation effect on ecological source sites but a weak isolation effect on risk source sites; and the fourth type of integrated node has a weak isolation effect on both ecological and risk sources. Our research contributes to the existing scholarship by providing a scientific basis for the comprehensive management of ecological security. It is of great necessity to monitor the ecological impacts with time going and explore ecological restoration strategies for wind power development. The research case of Zhongying Wind Farm is selected based on investigation and interviews regarding its ecological impact in the prior study. It employs a comparative methodology by comparing the ecological quality before and after the construction of Zhongying Wind Farm. Raw data from Landsat 8, the Digital Elevation Model (DEM), the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and wind turbine statistics originating from open data platforms are analyzed and visually represented with ArcGIS. This paper establishes an ecological network based on morphological spatial pattern analysis (MSPA) and the Minimum Cumulative Resistance (MCR) model to quantify wind farms' impacts on ecological corridors. The circuit theory and Pajek software are used to identify and categorize the ecological nodes into weak and obstacle points. The results reveal that ecological impacts on ecological corridors decay with distance, reflecting changes in length, connection strength and cumulative values of corridors. While the impacts on ecological nodes depend on nodes' attributes: the number of weak points increased by 18.5 %, and obstacle points increased by 350 %, with their locations shifting from the edges of urban construction sites to the edges of wind farm. Differentiated strategies are proposed according to the impact magnitude of each ecological corridor and node: such as dynamic inspection mechanism, construction prohibition for protection; corridor structure and function recovering, stepping stones addition for restoration; buffer belts, warning radar, and monetary schemes for compensation. This research fills the gap of ecological impact assessment under the challenges of wind energy expansion. The construction of an ecological security pattern (ESP) is an important undertaking in ensuring the stability of the ecosystem and the long-term growth of humanity. Existing research, However, existing research often overlooks the quantification of policy implications in ESP development. The objective of this paper was to bridge this gap by integrating policy quantification analysis (PQA) with nature, society and into ESP construction and providing targeted ecological management recommendations. The policy texts were quantified into reusable research data, which served as a foundation for the selection of indicators and the optimization of ecological security patterns, by using machine learning techniques. The methodology "Patch-matrix-corridor" was used to create a spatially correlated ecological security pattern. Through factor analysis and Random Forest (RF), the impact of each indicator on ecological security was thoroughly examined, offering substantial support for policy development and ESP construction planning. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area(GBA) was selected as the study area, the study found that: (1) The proposed framework PQA based-ESP could provide a useful eco-management tools. (2) Policy adaptability had a substantial impact on environmental security in the GBA, but the ecosystem service index has the highest impact. (3) Applying the framework, we identified a total of 1,993 km2 of ecological sources, 23 key ecological corridors, 58 general ecological corridors, and 31 ecological nodes. An improved ESP, characterized as "one circle, two bays, three rivers, multiple areas, corridors, and nodes," was constructed in the GBA. (4) Given the multi-scale analysis, tailored ecological management policy recommendations were proposed for each city in the GBA. Recent years have witnessed a reignition of the debate about free public transport, especially after a wider implementation due to the pandemic. However, most implementations have consisted of eliminating the fare without further structural adjustments, and one of the main reported concerns is that they seem to primarily attract commuters from active modes rather than car drivers. In this paper, we develop an analytical model to investigate how the design of a representative public transport line, situated in a corridor where it competes with both walking and cars, should be adjusted in response to fare reductions. We first conduct a detailed analysis of the effect of frequency and spacing on mode choice, showing that while increased frequencies attract both walkers and drivers, an increased spacing tends to attract long-distance commuters (often drivers) and discourage short-distance ones (which are more likely to walk). Hence, spacing can play a crucial role in inducing a desired mode choice. Afterwards, we study the optimal response of public transport design under two possible objectives. If the aim is to minimise users' plus operator's costs in public transport, a decrease in the fare should be joined by an increased frequency and, potentially, a reduced spacing. If the objective is to induce a more sustainable mode split, the measures are the opposite: increase spacing and reduce frequencies. These divergent findings show that it is crucial to have a clear goal when reducing the fare, as no singular policy can achieve all of the objectives. We remark that an increased spacing and reduced frequency reduce the financial burden of the system, although it is most likely not enough to compensate for the loss of revenue when fares go free. • A single public transport (PT) line considering fare, frequency, and stops spacing. • Users can choose between walking, PT, or car. • Study the optimal changes in frequency and spacing when fare becomes zero. • Spacing can be increased so that a free PT fare attracts only car drivers. Most previous researches on the construction of ESP have directly utilized extensive regions of forestland, grassland, water area or nature reserves as ecological sources (ESs) without weighing the habitat quality (HQ) and ecological protection red line (EPRL). The ES of the Dawen River basin (DRB) was identified through morphological spatial pattern analysis (MSPA) and landscape connectivity index. By employing the minimum cumulative resistance model (MCR), the potential ecological corridor (EC) was identified, and its importance was evaluated by gravity model. Simultaneously, the spatial properties of HQ and ecological resistance (ER) were analyzed. Finally, this paper proposed an optimization strategy for ESP in accordance with the EPRL. The results indicate that: (1) The DRB contained 15 important ESs, mainly concentrated in water and mountain forest areas. (2) 105 ECs were extracted by MCR and gravity model, including 35 level 1 corridors and 70 level 2 corridors, which were primarily concentrated in the eastern region of the basin. (3) Based on the spatial characteristics of HQ and ER, as well as the EPRL in the research, the ESP of "one axis, two belts and five zones" in the DRB was constructed and control strategies were proposed. The expansion of human activities has significantly increased ecological risks, which threaten the security of ecosystems. This paper takes Northeast China, a national typical ecological barrier region, as a case study to explore the evolution of the ecological environment under various future development scenarios. Considering the complexity of ecological assessments, a comprehensive approach integrating various methods is employed. This includes the Patch-based Land Use Simulation (PLUS) model, Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs (InVEST) model, a landscape ecological risk assessment index system, the Space Minimum Cumulative Resistance (MCR) model, among others. These methods are used to dynamically assess changes in land use, landscape ecological risk (LER), and the layout of ecological networks. An integrated framework is proposed for identifying, constructing, and optimizing the ecological security network (ESN). The results show that the LER in Northeast China presents a "high in the middle, low around" distribution characteristic. High risk areas are mainly distributed in water bodies and construction lands with high landscape fragmentation and isolation, while low risk areas are primarily in the Northeast forest belt and Inner Mongolia grassland areas with lower landscape vulnerability and separation. From 2000 to 2020, the LER in the Northeast China has increased, primarily manifested in the Greater and Lesser Khingan Range areas in the northern part of the study region. Forecast results indicate significant differences in the evolution of LERs and the layout of the ESN under different socio-economic development scenarios. Under the ecological protection (EP) scenario, the average LER in Northeast China is 0.2215. The area of ecological source lands is 302,405.56 km2, the length of ecological corridors is 179,024.71 km, with 339 ecological nodes and 410 ecological breakpoints identified. Compared with the natural development (ND) and urban construction (UC) scenarios, the EP scenario in Northeast China shows the lowest LER and the most ideal layout of the ESN. In recent years, wetland resources have been threatened by human activities such as mining, agriculture and construction land expansion, and problems such as shrinkage of wetland area and deterioration of water quality have emerged, impeding the exchange of materials between wetlands and reducing the ecological function of wetlands. Water systems are important channels for material exchange between wetland sources, and evaluating the ecological safety of wetland–water system ecological corridors can aid in efficiently delineating ecological restoration areas and identifying ecological problems. In this paper, the ecological safety of wetland–hydrological ecological corridors in the Han River Basin was evaluated, and ecological restoration areas were delineated by adopting the method of "identification of source areas - construction of resistance surfaces - extraction of wetland–hydrological ecological corridors" with the watershed as the research unit. The study identified wetland–hydrological ecological corridors with a total length of 7,589.77 km and delineated 31 sections of wetland–hydrological ecological corridors with a total length of 1,076 km; these corridors were located in the Hanzhong Canyon area, tributaries of the Danjiang River and Tangbai River, and tributaries of the main streams below Danjiangkou. Among them, 8 sections of the primary corridor account for 27 %, 14 sections of the secondary corridor account for 33 %, and 9 sections of the tertiary corridor account for 39 %. This study breaks administrative boundaries, emphasizes the correlation between wetlands and water bodies, highlights the integrity of ecosystems, and establishes a multidimensional systematic restoration methodology of "points, lines and surfaces", which provides guidelines for the long-term planning of ecological corridors of wetlands and water systems in large-scale regions. • A watershed ESPs construction method integrating MCR model and circuit theory from the perspectives of ecosystem services and ecological sensitivity was proposed. • The ecological sensitivity weights of different regions were applied for constructing the ESPs of the YRB. • The distributions of ECs and EPPs presented spatial differences in the ecological environment of the YRB. • The proposal of optimizing ESPs can promote the ecological protection and high-quality development of the basin. Safeguarding ecological security is one of China's important development strategies. Identifying ecological security patterns (ESPs) is an effective way to collaboratively develop ecological and environmental security in different regions. Currently, studies on the construction of regional ESPs mainly focus on the innovation of ecosystem service functions, ignoring the differences in ecological sensitivities of different ecological environments on a large scale. In this paper, taking the Yellow River Basin (YRB) as an example, six important ecosystem service functions were selected to identify ecological sources (ESs), ecological sensitivity weights were set according to the ecological environment characteristics of different regions, and the ecological resistance surfaces (ERSs) were determined. And the ESPs of the YRB were further investigated based on the Minimum Cumulative Resistance (MCR) model and circuit theory. The research findings indicate:(1) We had identified 218 ESs on the YRB, covering an area of 387,165 km2, which was 19.36 % of the entire study area and highly concentrated in the upstream areas. There were 532 ecological corridors (ECs) identified with a total length of 39,015.95 km, with less distribution in the lower reaches of the YRB. There were 201 ecological pinch points (EPPs) mainly in forests and grasslands. (2) ERSs constructed with different sensitivities weights had a significant impact on the distribution of ECs and EPPs. There were significant variations in the ESPs of the YRB. The upstream areas were notably more secure than the middle and lower reaches, indicating an overall lower level of ecological security. (3) Different ecological sensitivity weights were adopted in different regions, which was more suitable for the construction of ESPs with regional environmental differences.
