An adaptive variable step-size algorithm is proposed in this paper to address the impact of the real-time acoustic feedback and the real-time secondary path identification on the overall noise reduction performance of an active noise control system. An automated adjustment weight factor is introduced in the algorithm to accelerate the convergence of the acoustic feedback path as well as the secondary path identification, and to prevent possible system divergence. It is shown in this study that the proposed algorithm can resolve the trade-off between a fast convergence and a low misalignment of the virtual and the actual control paths typically found in conventional algorithms. An optimized control structure is also proposed in the study by enabling an adaptive gain adjustment based on the output of the auxiliary filter to enhance the practicality of the control system. The effectiveness of the algorithm is tested using two simulated multi-component signals and a broadband noise signal, and the results confirm that the proposed algorithm can achieve a good noise reduction with only a few iterations. Recent studies on diffusion adaptation for distributed active noise control (DANC) systems have attracted significant research interest due to their balance between computational burden and stability compared to conventional centralized and decentralized adaptation schemes. The conventional multitask diffusion FxLMS algorithm assumes that the converged solutions of all control filters are consistent to each other, which is unrealistic in practice hence results in inferior performance in noise reduction. An augmented diffusion FxLMS algorithm has been proposed to overcome this problem, which adopts a neighborhood-wide adaptation and node-based combination approach to mitigate the bias in the converged solution of the multitask diffusion algorithms. However, the improvement comes at the expense of a higher computational burden and communication cost. All existing DANC systems, including the multitask and augmented diffusion algorithms, assume one-way communication between nodes. By contrast, this paper proposes a bidirectional communication scheme for the augmented diffusion algorithm to further reduce the memory requirement, computational burden, and communication cost. Simulation results in the free field and with measured room impulse responses both demonstrate that the proposed augmented diffusion algorithm with bidirectional communication can achieve a faster convergence speed than that based on one-way communication with a lower memory, computation, and communication burden. In an active headrest system virtual sensing tends to transfer the spatial zone of quiet from the residual error microphone to the ear canal. An attempt has been made in this paper to develop an auxiliary filter based virtual sensing scheme integrated with the filtered-x least mean square/fourth algorithm for an active headrest. The performance of the proposed method has been evaluated experimentally using periodic and band limited white noise. Improved noise control performance has been observed for both periodic and broadband noise. The effect of causality constraint of the performance of the algorithm has also been tested. The bin-normalized frequency domain block least mean square (NFBLMS) algorithm is a good choice in the active noise control system due to its benefit of high convergence speed. However, it suffers from a biased steady-state solution with insufficient adaptive filter length, often unavoidable due to the influence of the secondary path. A modified frequency domain block least mean square (MFBLMS) algorithm with guaranteed optimal steady-state performance has been proposed recently. However, its convergence speed is generally lower than that of the NFBLMS algorithm. In this paper, a mixed algorithm combining the NFBLMS and MFBLMS algorithms is proposed based on the analysis of the initial convergence trajectory of the NFBLMS algorithm. An effective switching strategy is designed, enabling the MFBLMS algorithm after the NFBLMS algorithm approaches its steady state and shifting back to the NFBLMS algorithm when the change of environment is detected. The mixed algorithm has both the high convergence speed and the optimal steady-state performance, and its effectiveness is validated by simulations using measured acoustic transfer functions. Measured cross-spectral matrices (CSMs) from a microphone array will in some cases be contaminated by severe incoherent noise signals in the individual channels. A typical example is flow noise generated in the individual microphones when measuring in a wind tunnel. Assuming stationary signals and performing long-time averaging, the contamination will be concentrated on the CSM diagonal. When the CSM is used for traditional frequency-domain beamforming, diagonal removal (DR) will avoid use of the diagonal. DR is effective at suppressing the contamination effects, but it also has some side effects. With other beamforming algorithms and in connection with acoustic holography, however, the diagonal of the CSM is needed. The present paper describes a method for removal of incoherent noise contamination from the CSM diagonal. The method formulates the problem as a semidefinite program, which is a convex optimization problem that can be solved very efficiently and with guaranteed convergence properties. A first numerical study investigates the question, whether the semidefinite program formulation will provide in all cases the desired output. A second numerical study investigates the limitations introduced by off-diagonal noise contributions due to finite averaging time. Multi-channel active noise control (ANC) is currently an attractive solution for the attenuation of low-frequency noise fields, in three-dimensional space. This paper develops a controller for the case when the noise source components are sparsely distributed in space. The anti-noise signals are designed as in conventional ANC to minimize the residual errors but with an additional term containing an ll norm regularization applied to the signal magnitude. This results in that only secondary sources close to the noise sources are required to be active for cancellation of sparse noise fields. In active noise control (ANC) systems, virtual microphones provide a means of projecting the zone of quiet away from the physical microphone to a remote location. To date, linear ANC algorithms, such as the filtered-x least mean square (FXLMS) algorithm, have been used with virtual sensing techniques. In this paper, a nonlinear ANC algorithm is developed for a virtual microphone by integrating the remote microphone technique with the filtered-s least mean square (FSLMS) algorithm. The proposed algorithm is evaluated experimentally in the cancellation of chaotic noise in a one-dimensional duct. The secondary paths evaluated experimentally exhibit non-minimum phase response and hence poor performance is obtained with the conventional FXLMS algorithm compared to the proposed FSLMS based algorithm. This is because the latter is capable of predicting the chaotic signal found in many physical processes responsible for noise. In addition, the proposed algorithm is shown to outperform the FXLMS based remote microphone technique under the causality constraint (when the propagation delay of the secondary path is greater than the primary path). A number of experimental results are presented in this paper to compare the performance of the FSLMS algorithm based virtual ANC algorithm with the FXLMS based virtual ANC algorithm. In this paper, real-time results are given for broadband multichannel active noise control using the regularized modified filtered-error algorithm. As compared to the standard filtered-error algorithm, the improved convergence rate and stability of the algorithm are obtained by using an inner–outer factorization of the transfer path between the actuators and the error sensors, combined with a delay compensation technique using double control filters and a regularization technique that preserves the factorization properties. The latter techniques allow the use of relatively simple and efficient adaptation schemes in which filtering of the reference signals is unnecessary. Results are given for a multichannel adaptive feedback implementation based on the internal model control principle. In feedforward systems based on this algorithm, colored reference signals may lead to reduced convergence rates. An adaptive extension based on the use of affine projections is presented, for which real-time results and simulations are given, showing the improved convergence rates of the regularized modified filtered-error algorithm for colored reference signals. In some situations of active noise control, infinite impulse response (IIR) filters are more suitable than finite impulse response (FIR) filters owing to the poles in the transfer function. A number of algorithms have been derived for applying IIR filters in active noise control; however, most of them use the direct form IIR filter structure, which faces the difficulties of checking stability and relatively slow convergence speed for noise composed of narrow-band components with large power disparity. To overcome these difficulties along with using the direct form IIR filters, a new adaptive algorithm is proposed in this paper, which uses and updates the lattice form adaptive IIR filter in an active noise control system. Full mathematical derivations of the proposed algorithm are presented, and the comparison between the proposed algorithm and the commonly used filtered-u LMS and filtered-v LMS algorithms shows the superiority of the proposed algorithm.
