Slope failures are the result of various predisposing factors (geo-structural and morphological conditions, topography, geotechnical characteristics, etc.). In an ordinary phase, a typical slope stability analysis includes the identification of factors that can trigger a slope failure, its mechanisms, the modelling of stability conditions and their assessment during critical situations. To define the predisposing and triggering factors, integrated monitoring represents an essential and powerful tool. In this paper, referring to the case study of a medium-deep landslide that occurred in Calabria (Southern Italy) during the winter of 2009–2010, a method and means of defining an emergency geotechnical model ( smart geotechnical model ) using a geological model are proposed. The definition of both models considers the resources that may be obtained in an emergency and the short time available to achieve the objectives (protection of public and private safety, restoration of normal conditions, etc.). The proposed method allows the orderly and systematic acquisition, under emergency conditions, of data that are useful for the management of a particular situation and for defining an initial cognitive state of the problem. These elements can be particularly effective in both emergency (to manage risk using progressively quantitative knowledge) and ordinary conditions to plan, design, realize and manage definitive measures for risk adaptation, mitigation and reduction. Abstract: The aim of this paper is to analyze the reactivation mechanism of ancient earth flows, with a view to gleaning information that can subsequently be utilized to formulate a risk-reduction strategy. All considerations made herein are the result of direct experience and observation of actual events which have occurred over the past few decades in the Northern Apennines. Particular attention has been paid to the analysis of the evolution of landslides during actual reactivation, acknowledging a typical, recurring succession of events that precede the failure of the slope. The hazard assessment of these large landslide bodies, which are of slope scale, constitutes a thorny problem, especially in view of the inapplicability of traditional deterministic models such as limit equilibrium stability analysis. Nevertheless, a site-specific assessment of probability of reactivation of these large and ancient earth flows is fundamental to effective land-use planning. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The paper describes the study of two extremely slow, active-continuous, deep-seated landslides located in the Isarco Valley (Eastern Alps, Italy): a Multiple Rotational Rock Slide (MRRS) and partial reactivation of a Deep-Seated Gravitational Slope Deformation (DSGSD). Both landslides interact with viaducts on the E45 highway. Extensive multi-method field investigation, monitoring of surface and subsurface displacements and limit equilibrium stability analyses were adopted to fully characterize slope dynamics. In order to overcome the limitations due to the systematic errors affecting each single monitoring system and analysis method, an operative framework based on redundancy and coherence tests was introduced to check the reliability of the data and results. In this framework, the geological and geotechnical models of the investigated slopes were progressively refined. This allowed assessment of the type of interaction between the slopes and the highway viaducts. • Study of large, composite and extremely slow landslides requires extensive multi-method monitoring of displacements. • Systematic errors affecting the measurements may mask the actual rate of movement. • Redundancy and coherence tests of monitoring data as a tool to check reliability of data and results. • The reliability of displacement monitoring is crucial to analyse large extremely slow landslides.
