Reducing building energy consumption and increasing the use of renewable energy are essential to energy conservation. Photovoltaic thermoelectric heat pumps have been considered as a sustainable measure to supply detached houses with hot water, especially those that even do not have access to the power grid. This paper investigates a stand-alone photovoltaic/thermal integrated thermoelectric water heating system (PV/T-TEWH). A dynamic model of PV/T-TEWH is developed and validated. The performance of the system in Lhasa, Beijing, Changsha and Guangzhou is simulated and analyzed respectively, and the economics of the system are compared. Results show that PV/T-TEWH can rely on the electric energy it generates without additional power supply when the current is less than or equal to 1.4 A in Lhasa and 1.0 A in Beijing, Changsha and Guangzhou. The annual total heat gain of the PV/T-TEWH system increases as the operating current increases, but the COP of the system falls with the rise of operating current. When the system is operating at the currents of 0.6 A, 1.0 A, 1.4 A, and 1.8 A, the payback period shortens with the increase of current. Lhasa has the shortest payback period among four cities and it is only 2.2 years when the working current is 1.8 A. Abstract: Energy use in the built environment represents a large part of total energy use in Sweden and is one important sector where energy conservation needs to be significantly improved in order to meet the national implementation of the European goals. One key question that needs to be investigated in relation to these goals is the performance and implementation of passive or low-energy houses. This paper presents results and an evaluation of a newly built house in an area with passive houses in Linköping, Sweden. Nine passive houses were built with the aim to be energy efficient, with an annual space heating demand of 21kWh/m2, and at the same time to have the same visual appearance as any other building in the surrounding area. This study evaluates the energy performance of a residential area with low-energy buildings based on Building Energy Simulation (BES) (IDA ICE 4), and measurements from the real object. Both annual and hourly validation is performed using room by room modeling and internal heat gains. A novel approach to internal heat gain modeling is presented using time-use data (TUD). The results show possible improvements in the design, the building envelope and in the heating control. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper analyzes the thermal and energy behaviour of apartments in three-story block buildings located along a NE-SW axis (azimuth=120°) in a temperate-cold climate (latitude: 36°57′; longitude: 64°27′) in the city of Santa Rosa, La Pampa, central Argentina. Four apartments had been monitored during May and June 2009. Three of them are located in Block 126. Two of these apartments face South: 15 and 23 on the SE end, ground and first floor, respectively; 18 faces N on the second floor. Finally apartment, 12 is located in Block 374, on the first floor, faces N and shows a carpentry-closed balcony. The purpose of this work is – to study the evolution of the indoor temperature in each apartment; to analyze energy consumption and comfort conditions; to study energy potential and energy intervention in order to reduce energy consumption; to analyze bioclimatic alternatives feasibility and the possibility to extrapolate results to all blocks. On the basis of the analysis of natural gas historical consumption records, results showed that regarding heating energy consumption during the period May–June, Apartment 12, facing N, with its only bedroom facing NW and its carpentry-closed, transparent glass balcony, presented a mean temperature of 21.2°C, using a halogen heater for 6h/day between 9pm and 2am (0.16kWh/day/m2). Apartment 15, on the SE end, first floor of the block consumed 22.5kWh/day (0.43kWh/day/m2) (mean temperature=22.2°C). Apartment 23, located on the second and top floor (on top of Apartment 15) with higher energy loss, consumed 28kWh/day (0.54kWh/day/m2) (mean temperature=23.7°C). Apartment 18, also on the second floor and facing N, located in the centre and with its only bedroom facing SE, consumed 18.8kWh/day (0.48kWh/day/m2) (mean temperature=22.3°C). Apartment 23, with higher thermal loss through its envelope, but with heat transfer from the apartment located below, is the one that showed the highest level of consumption/m2. Closing the balcony with carpentry produced an important reduction of energy consumption while reaching comfort conditions. The analysis of the experimental results allowed: (a) to determine through analysis of historical consumption of natural gas prior to the year 2009 that the owner lived under conditions of comfort, (b) to evaluate possible interventions in the building that would lead to saving heating energy. Thermal insulation of roof and envelope appears as the most feasible alternative whereas closing balconies constitute a very good design option in winter. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Green roofs are a passive cooling technique that stop incoming solar radiation from reaching the building structure below. Many studies have been conducted over the past 10 years to consider the potential building energy benefits of green roofs and shown that they can offer benefits in winter heating reduction as well as summer cooling. This paper reviews the current literature and highlights the situations in which the greatest building energy savings can be made. Older buildings with poor existing insulation are deemed to benefit most from a green roof as current building regulations require such high levels of insulation that green roofs are seen to hardly affect annual building energy consumption. As over half of the existing UK building stock was built before any roof insulation was required, it is older buildings that will benefit most from green roofs. The case for retrofitting existing buildings is therefore reviewed and it is found there is strong potential for green roof retrofit in the UK. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: It is well known that it is necessary to insulate the buildings to decrease the thermal demand and to decrease the use of heating and cooling. Due to the high cost of fossil fuels and to the necessity to reduce CO2 emissions, and also due to the new building regulations more attention is paid to the insulation of buildings. Different insulation materials are available in the market. Usually, they are compared by their thermal conductivity and with theoretical calculations, but there are no experimental comparisons available, where the behavior of such insulation materials in a building is compared over time. This is why the authors started a comparison of three typical insulation materials, polyurethane, polystyrene, and mineral wool. For this purpose, four house-like cubicles were constructed (with a size of 2.4m×2.4m×2.4m) and their thermal performance throughout the time was measured. The cubicles were built under a conventional Mediterranean construction system, differing only in the insulation material used. During 2008 and the first months of 2009 the performance of these cubicles was evaluated, and the results are presented in this paper. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper presents a detailed meta-analysis of end and primary energy use for heating, cooling and ventilation of 11 low-energy non-residential buildings and one residential building in Germany that belong to the EnOB research program launched by the German Federal Ministry for Economy. In particular, the analysis emphasizes the substantial impact of auxiliary energy use on the efficiency of heating and cooling performance. The investigated buildings employ environmental energy sources and sinks – such as the ground, ground water, rainwater and the ambient air – in combination with thermo-active building systems. These concepts are promising approaches for slashing the primary energy use of buildings without violating occupant thermal comfort. A limited primary energy use of about 100kWhprim/(m2 neta) as a target for the complete building service technology (HVAC and lighting) was postulated for all buildings presented. With respect to this premise, a comprehensive long-term monitoring in high time resolution was carried out over the course of two to five years, with an accompanying commissioning of the building performance. Measurements include the energy use for heating, cooling, and ventilation, as well as the auxiliary equipment, the performance of the environmental heat source and sink, and local climatic site conditions. Abstract: The large thermal time constant of thermally activated building systems (TABS) hampers communication between the system''s production and emission. Therefore, conventional building control strategies, typically using room temperature feedback, are unadapted to control thermal comfort efficiently. In this paper, measurement data and simulation results reveal that unadapted TABS control has a dramatic impact on overall energy performance. Measurements in a TABS building with room temperature feedback show the HVAC system switching between heating and cooling in a very short time frame. A simplified, generic room model is used to simulate, understand and evaluate this behaviour. For room temperature feedback control, only 45% of the cold and 15% of the heat produced actually controls room temperature. The remainder is stored in the TABS and exchanged between the heating and cooling system. Enlarging the heating-to-cooling set point band improves this ratio, while maintaining thermal comfort. On the other hand, night time operation control of the circulation pump, adapted to the TABS thermal time constant, eliminates this ‘unused’ energy completely. In this case, however, even with perfect heat gain forecasts, it is difficult to avoid room temperatures dropping below thermal comfort limits during initial office hours.
