Economic Dispatch Problems (EDP) refer to the process of determining the power output of generation units such that the electricity demand of the system is satisfied at a minimum cost while technical and operational constraints of the system are satisfied. This procedure is vital in the efficient energy management of electricity networks since it can ensure the reliable and efficient operation of power systems. As power systems transition from conventional to modern ones, new components and constraints are introduced to power systems, making the EDP increasingly complex. This highlights the importance of developing advanced optimization techniques that can efficiently handle these new complexities to ensure optimal operation and cost-effectiveness of power systems. This review paper provides a comprehensive exploration of the EDP, encompassing its mathematical formulation and the examination of commonly used problem formulation techniques, including single and multi-objective optimization methods. It also explores the progression of paradigms in economic dispatch, tracing the journey from traditional methods to contemporary strategies in power system management. The paper categorizes the commonly utilized techniques for solving EDP into four groups: conventional mathematical approaches, uncertainty modelling methods, artificial intelligence-driven techniques, and hybrid algorithms. It identifies critical research gaps, a predominant focus on single-case studies that limit the generalizability of findings, and the challenge of comparing research due to arbitrary system choices and formulation variations. The present paper calls for the implementation of standardized evaluation criteria and the inclusion of a diverse range of case studies to enhance the practicality of optimization techniques in the field. Detecting transformer faults is critical to avoid the undesirable loss of transformers from service and ensure utility service continuity. Transformer faults diagnosis can be determined based on dissolved gas analysis (DGA). The DGA traditional techniques, such as Duval triangle, Key gas, Rogers' ratio, Dornenburg, and IEC code 60599, suffer from poor transformer faults diagnosis. Therefore, recent research has been developed to diagnose transformer fault and the diagnostic accuracy using combined traditional methods of DGA with artificial intelligence and optimization methods. This paper used a novel meta-heuristic technique, based on Gravitational Search and Dipper Throated Optimization Algorithms (GSDTO), to enhance the transformer faults' diagnostic accuracy, which was considered a novelty in this work to reduce the misinterpretation of the transformer faults. The robustness of the constructed GSDTO-based model was addressed by the statistical study using Wilcoxon's rank-sum and ANOVA tests. The results revealed that the constructed model enhanced the diagnostic accuracy up to 98.26% for all test cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is concerned with the application of computational intelligence techniques to the conceptual design and development of a large-scale floating settlement. The settlement in question is a design for the area of Urla, which is a rural touristic region located on the west coast of Turkey, near the metropolis of Izmir. The problem at hand includes both engineering and architectural aspects that need to be addressed in a comprehensive manner. We thus adapt the view as a multi-objective constrained real-parameter optimization problem. Specifically, we consider three objectives, which are conflicting. The first one aims at maximizing accessibility of urban functions such as housing and public spaces, as well as special functions, such as a marina for yachts and a yacht club. The second one aims at ensuring the wind protection of the general areas of the settlement, by adequately placing them in between neighboring land masses. The third one aims at maximizing visibility of the settlement from external observation points, so as to maximize the exposure of the settlement. To address this complex multi-objective optimization problem and identify lucrative alternative design solutions, a multi-objective harmony search algorithm (MOHS) is developed and applied in this paper. When compared to the Differential Evolution algorithm developed for the problem in the literature, we demonstrate that MOHS achieves competitive or slightly better performance in terms of hyper volume calculation, and gives promising results when the Pareto front approximation is examined. Non-preemptive schedulers, despite their many discussed drawbacks, remain a very popular choice for practitioners of real-time and embedded systems. The non-preemptive 'thrift' cyclic scheduler-variations of which can be found in other application areas-has recently received considerable attention for the implementation of such embedded systems. A thrift scheduler provides a flexible and compact implementation model for periodic task sets with comparatively small overheads; additionally, it can overcome several of the problems associated with traditional 'cyclic executives'. However, severe computational difficulties can still arise when designing schedules for non-trivial task sets. This paper is concerned with an optimization version of the offset-assignment problem, in which the objective is to assign task offsets such that the required CPU clock speed is minimized whilst ensuring that task overruns do not occur; it is known that the decision version of this problem is complete for Σ2 p. The paper first considers the problem of candidate solution verification-itself strongly coNP-Complete- and a fast, exact algorithm for this problem is proposed; it is shown that for any fixed number of tasks, its execution time is polynomial. The paper then proposes two heuristic algorithms of pseudo-polynomial complexity for solving the offset-assignment problem, and considers how redundant choices of offset combinations can be eliminated to help speed up the search. UAV trajectory planning is one of the research focuses in artificial intelligence and UAV technology. The asymmetric information, however, will lead to the uncertainty of the UAV trajectory planning; the probability theory as the most commonly used method to solve the trajectory planning problem in uncertain environment will lead to unrealistic conclusions under the condition of lacking samples, while the uncertainty theory based on uncertain measures is an efficient method to solve such problems. Firstly, the uncertainties in trajectory planning are sufficiently considered in this paper; the fuel consumption, concealment and threat degree with uncertain variables are taken as the objective functions; the constraints are analyzed according to the maneuverability; and the uncertain multi-objective trajectory planning (UMOTP) model is established. After that, this paper takes both the long-term benefits and its stability into account, and then, the expected-value and standard-deviation efficient trajectory model is established. What is more, this paper solves the Pareto front of the trajectory planning, satisfying various preferences, which avoids the defects of the trajectory obtained by traditional model only applicable to a certain specific situation. In order to obtain a better solution set, this paper proposes an improved backbones particle swarm optimization algorithm based on PSO and NSGA-II, which overcomes the shortcomings of the traditional algorithm such as premature convergence and poor robustness, and the efficiency of the algorithm is tested. Finally, the algorithm is applied to the UMOTP problem; then, the optimal trajectory set is obtained, and the effectiveness and reliability of the model is verified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thanks to the built in intelligence (deployment of new intelligent devices and sensors in places where historically they were not present), the Smart Grid and Microgrid paradigms are able to take advantage from aggregated load forecasting, which opens the door for the implementation of new algorithms to seize this information for optimization and advanced planning. Therefore, accuracy in load forecasts will potentially have a big impact on key operation factors for the future Smart Grid/Microgrid-based energy network like user satisfaction and resource saving, and new methods to achieve an efficient prediction in future energy landscapes (very different from the centralized, big area networks studied so far). This paper proposes different improved models to forecast next day's aggregated load using artificial neural networks, taking into account the variables that are most relevant. In particular, seven models based on the multilayer perceptron will be proposed, progressively adding input variables after analyzing the influence of climate factors on aggregated load. In the pulping industry, thermo-mechanical pulping (TMP) as a subdivision of the refiner-based mechanical pulping is one of the most energy-intensive processes where the core of the process is attributed to the refining process. In this study, to simulate the refining unit of the TMP process under different operational states, the idea of machine learning algorithms is employed. Complicated processes and prediction problems could be simulated and solved by utilizing artificial intelligence methods inspired by the pattern of brain learning. In this research, six evolutionary optimization algorithms are employed to be joined with the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) to increase the refining simulation accuracy. The applied optimization algorithms are particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO), differential evolution (DE), biogeography-based optimization algorithm (BBO), genetic algorithm (GA), ant colony (ACO), and teaching learning-based optimization algorithm (TLBO). The simulation predictor variables are site ambient temperature, refining dilution water, refining plate gap, and chip transfer screw speed, while the model outputs are refining motor load and generated steam. Findings confirm the superiority of the PSO algorithm concerning model performance comparing to the other evolutionary algorithms for optimizing ANFIS method parameters, which are utilized for simulating a refiner unit in the TMP process.
