In response to the challenges posed by small objects in remote sensing images, such as low resolution, complex backgrounds, and severe occlusions, this paper proposes a lightweight improved model based on YOLOv8n. During the detection of small objects, the feature fusion part of the YOLOv8n algorithm retrieves relatively fewer features of small objects from the backbone network compared to large objects, resulting in low detection accuracy for small objects. To address this issue, firstly, this paper adds a dedicated small object detection layer in the feature fusion network to better integrate the features of small objects into the feature fusion part of the model. Secondly, the SSFF module is introduced to facilitate multi-scale feature fusion, enabling the model to capture more gradient paths and further improve accuracy while reducing model parameters. Finally, the HPANet structure is proposed, replacing the Path Aggregation Network with HPANet. Compared to the original YOLOv8n algorithm, the recognition accuracy of mAP@0.5 on the VisDrone data set and the AI-TOD data set has increased by 14.3% and 17.9%, respectively, while the recognition accuracy of mAP@0.5:0.95 has increased by 17.1% and 19.8%, respectively. The proposed method reduces the parameter count by 33% and the model size by 31.7% compared to the original model. High-resolution remote sensing image-based vegetation monitoring is a hot topic in remote sensing technology and applications. However, when facing large-scale monitoring across different sensors in broad areas, the current methods suffer from fragmentation and weak generalization capabilities. To address this issue, this paper proposes a multisource high-resolution remote sensing image-based vegetation extraction method that considers the comprehensive perception of multiple features. First, this method utilizes a random forest model to perform feature selection for the vegetation index, selecting an index that enhances the otherness between vegetation and other land features. Based on this, a multifeature synthesis perception convolutional network (MSCIN) is constructed, which enhances the extraction of multiscale feature information, global information interaction, and feature cross-fusion. The MSCIN network simultaneously constructs dual-branch parallel networks for spectral features and vegetation index features, strengthening multiscale feature extraction while reducing the loss of detailed features by simplifying the dense connection module. Furthermore, to facilitate global information interaction between the original spectral information and vegetation index features, a dual-path multihead cross-attention fusion module is designed. This module enhances the differentiation of vegetation from other land features and improves the network's generalization performance, enabling vegetation extraction from multisource high-resolution remote sensing data. To validate the effectiveness of this method, we randomly selected six test areas within Anhui Province and compared the results with three different data sources and other typical methods (NDVI, RFC, OCBDL, and HRNet). The results demonstrate that the MSCIN method proposed in this paper, under the premise of using only GF2 satellite images as samples, exhibits robust accuracy in extraction results across different sensors. The study of ancient irrigation is crucial in the archaeological research of arid regions. It covers a wide range of topics, with the Near East being the focus for decades. However, political instability and limited data have posed challenges to these studies. The primary objective is to establish a standardised method applicable to different arid environments using the Google Earth Engine platform, considering local relief of terrain and seasonal differences in vegetation. This study integrates multispectral data from LANDSAT 5, Sentinel-2, SAR imagery from Sentinel 1, and TanDEM-X (12 m and 30 m) DSMs. Using these datasets, calculations of selected vegetation indices such as the SMTVI and NDVSI, spectral decomposition methods such as TCT and PCA, and topography-based methods such as the MSRM contribute to a comprehensive understanding of landscape irrigation. This paper investigates the influence of modern environmental conditions on the visibility of features like levees and palaeo-channels by testing different methods and parameters. This study aims to identify the most effective approach for each case study and explore the possibility of applying a consistent method across all areas. Heterogeneous image change detection is a very practical and challenging task because the data in the original image have a large distribution difference and the labeled samples of the remote sensing image are usually very few. In this study, we focus on solving the issue of comparing heterogeneous images without supervision. This paper first designs a self-paced multi-scale joint feature mapper (SMJFM) for the mapping of heterogeneous data to similar feature spaces for comparison and incorporates a self-paced learning strategy to weaken the mapper's capture of non-consistent information. Then, the difference information in the output of the mapper is evaluated from two perspectives, namely noise robustness and detail preservation effectiveness; then, the change detection problem is modeled as a multi-objective optimization problem. We decompose this multi-objective optimization problem into several scalar optimization subproblems with different weights, and use particle swarm optimization to optimize these subproblems. Finally, the robust evaluation strategy is used to fuse the multi-scale change information to obtain a high-precision binary change map. Compared with previous methods, the proposed SMJFM framework has the following three main advantages: First, the unsupervised design alleviates the dilemma of few labels in remote sensing images. Secondly, the introduction of self-paced learning enhances SMJFM's capture of the unchanged region mapping relationship between heterogeneous images. Change detection is crucial for evaluating land use, land cover changes, and sustainable development, constituting a significant component of Earth observation tasks. The difficulty in extracting features from high-resolution images, coupled with the complexity of image content, poses challenges for traditional change detection algorithms in terms of accuracy and applicability. The recent emergence of deep learning methods has led to substantial progress in the field of change detection. However, existing frameworks often involve the simplistic integration of bi-temporal features in specific areas, lacking the fusion of temporal information and semantic details in the images. In this paper, we propose an attention-guided multi-scale fusion network (AMFNet), which effectively integrates bi-temporal image features and diverse semantics at both the encoding and decoding stages. AMFNet utilizes a unique attention-guided mechanism to dynamically adjust feature fusion, enhancing adaptability and accuracy in change detection tasks. Our method intelligently incorporates temporal information into the deep learning model, considering the temporal dependency inherent in these tasks. We decode based on an interactive feature map, which improves the model's understanding of evolving patterns over time. Additionally, we introduce multi-level supervised training to facilitate the learning of fused features across multiple scales. In comparison with different algorithms, our proposed method achieves F1 values of 0.9079, 0.8225, and 0.8809 in the LEVIR-CD, GZ-CD, and SYSU-CD datasets, respectively. Our model outperforms the SOTA model, SAGNet, by 0.69% in terms of F1 and 1.15% in terms of IoU on the LEVIR-CD dataset, by 2.8% in terms of F1 and 1.79% in terms of IoU on the GZ-CD dataset, and by 0.54% in terms of F1 and 0.38% in terms of IoU on the SYSU-CD dataset. This paper describes the creation of a fast, deterministic, 3D fractal cloud renderer for the AFIT Sensor and Scene Emulation Tool (ASSET). The renderer generates 3D clouds by ray marching through a volume and sampling the level-set of a fractal function. The fractal function is distorted by a displacement map, which is generated using horizontal wind data from a Global Forecast System (GFS) weather file. The vertical windspeed and relative humidity are used to mask the creation of clouds to match realistic large-scale weather patterns over the Earth. Small-scale detail is provided by the fractal functions which are tuned to match natural cloud shapes. This model is intended to run quickly, and it can run in about 700 ms per cloud type. This model generates clouds that appear to match large-scale satellite imagery, and it reproduces natural small-scale shapes. This should enable future versions of ASSET to generate scenarios where the same scene is consistently viewed from both GEO and LEO satellites from multiple perspectives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Remote sensing datasets usually have a wide range of spatial and spectral resolutions. They provide unique advantages in surveillance systems, and many government organizations use remote sensing multispectral imagery to monitor security-critical infrastructures or targets. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has advanced rapidly in recent years and has been widely applied to remote image analysis, achieving state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance. However, AI models are vulnerable and can be easily deceived or poisoned. A malicious user may poison an AI model by creating a stealthy backdoor. A backdoored AI model performs well on clean data but behaves abnormally when a planted trigger appears in the data. Backdoor attacks have been extensively studied in machine learning-based computer vision applications with natural images. However, much less research has been conducted on remote sensing imagery, which typically consists of many more bands in addition to the red, green, and blue bands found in natural images. In this paper, we first extensively studied a popular backdoor attack, BadNets, applied to a remote sensing dataset, where the trigger was planted in all of the bands in the data. Our results showed that SOTA defense mechanisms, including Neural Cleanse, TABOR, Activation Clustering, Fine-Pruning, GangSweep, Strip, DeepInspect, and Pixel Backdoor, had difficulties detecting and mitigating the backdoor attack. We then proposed an explainable AI-guided backdoor attack specifically for remote sensing imagery by placing triggers in the image sub-bands. Our proposed attack model even poses stronger challenges to these SOTA defense mechanisms, and no method was able to defend it. This paper is the first to examine the operation of the HawkEye satellite in the presence of dust aerosol. The study region is the Black Sea. Dust transport dates were identified using visual inspection of satellite imagery, back-kinematic HYSPLIT trajectory analysis, CALIPSO aerosol stratification and typing maps, and the global forecasting model SILAM. In a comparative analysis of in-situ and satellite measurements of the remote sensing reflectance, an error in the atmospheric correction of HawkEye measurements was found both for a clean atmosphere and in the presence of an absorbing aerosol. It is shown that, on average, the dependence of the atmospheric correction error on wavelength has the form of a power function of the form from λ−3 to λ−9. The largest errors are in the short-wavelength region of the spectrum (412–443 nm) for the dust and dusty marine aerosol domination dates. A comparative analysis of satellite and in situ measurements of the optical characteristics of the atmosphere, namely the AOD and the Ångström parameter, was carried out. It is shown that the aerosol model used by HawkEye underestimates the Angström parameter and, most likely, large errors and outliers in satellite measurements are associated with this. The detection of burnt areas from satellite imagery is one of the most straightforward and useful applications of satellite remote sensing. In general, the approach relies on a change detection analysis applied on pre- and post-event images. This change detection analysis usually is carried out by comparing the values of specific spectral indices such as: NBR (normalised burn ratio), BAI (burn area index), MIRBI (mid-infrared burn index). However, some potential sources of error arise, particularly when near-real-time automated approaches are adopted. An automated approach is mandatory when the burnt area monitoring should operate systematically on a given area of large size (country). Potential sources of errors include but are not limited to clouds on the pre- or post-event images, clouds or topographic shadows, agricultural practices, image pixel size, level of damage, etc. Some authors have already noted differences between global databases of burnt areas based on satellite images. Sources of errors could be related to the spatial resolution of the images used, the land-cover mask adopted to avoid false alarms, and the quality of the cloud and shadow masks. This paper aims to compare different burnt areas datasets (EFFIS, ESACCI, Copernicus, FIRMS, etc.) with the objective to analyse their differences. The comparison is restricted to the Italian territory. Furthermore, the paper aims to identify the degree of approximation of these satellite-based datasets by relying on ground survey data as ground truth. To do so, ground survey data provided by CUFA (Comando Unità Forestali, Ambientali e Agroalimentari Carabinieri) and CFVA (Corpo Forestale e Vigilanza Ambientale Sardegna) were used. The results confirm the existence of significant differences between the datasets. The subsequent comparison with the ground surveys, which was conducted while also taking into account their own approximations, allowed us to identify the accuracy of the satellite-based datasets. This paper proposes an efficient and high-fidelity image fusion method based on adaptive smoothing filtering for panchromatic (PAN) and multispectral (MS) image fusion. The scale ratio reflects the ratio of spatial resolution between the panchromatic image and the multispectral image. When facing a multiscale fusion task, traditional methods are unable to simultaneously handle the problems of spectral resolution loss resulting from high scale ratios and the issue of reduced spatial resolution due to low scale ratios. To adapt to the fusion of panchromatic and multispectral satellite images of different scales, this paper improves the problem of the insufficient filtering of high-frequency information of remote sensing images of different scales by the classic filter-based intensity modulation (SFIM) model. It uses Gaussian convolution kernels instead of traditional mean convolution kernels and builds a Gaussian pyramid to adaptively construct convolution kernels of different scales to filter out high-frequency information of high-resolution images. It can adaptively process panchromatic multispectral images of different scales, iteratively filter the spatial information in panchromatic images, and ensure that the scale transformation is consistent with the definition of multispectral images. Using 15 common fusion methods, this paper compares the experimental results of ZY-3 with scale ratio 2.7 and SV-1 with scale ratio 4 data. In this paper, a new simultaneous retrieval method of the SIRAW algorithm is introduced and carried out on FY3D/MERSI-II satellite images to obtain the aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and normalized water-leaving radiance (WLR) over the ocean. In order to improve the operation efficiency of SIRAW, a machine learning solver is developed to improve the speed of forward radiative transfer computation during retrieval. Ground-based measurement data from AERONET-OC and satellite products from VIIRS are used for comparative verification. The results show that the retrieved AOT and WLR from SIRAW are both in good agreement with those of AERONET-OC and VIIRS. Further, considering the degradation of the MERSI sensor, a new calibration scheme on 412 nm and 443 nm is adopted and an evaluation is carried out. Inter-comparison of derived WLR between MERSI and VIIRS indicates that the new calibration scheme could effectively improve the WLR retrieval accuracy of MERSI with better consistency to the official data of VIIRS. Therefore, this paper confirms that a simultaneous retrieval scheme combined with effective calibration coefficients can be used for high-precision retrieval of real aerosol and water-leaving radiation. Remote sensing technology has become a popular tool for crop classification, but it faces challenges in accurately identifying crops in areas with fragmented land plots and complex planting structures. To address this issue, we propose an improved method for crop identification in high-resolution remote sensing images, achieved by modifying the DeepLab V3+ semantic segmentation network. In this paper, the typical crop area in the Jianghuai watershed is taken as the experimental area, and Gaofen-2 satellite images with high spatial resolutions are used as the data source. Based on the original DeepLab V3+ model, CI and OSAVI vegetation indices are added to the input layers, and MobileNet V2 is used as the backbone network. Meanwhile, the upper sampling layer of the network is added, and the attention mechanism is added to the ASPP and the upper sampling layers. The accuracy verification of the identification results shows that the MIoU and PA of this model in the test set reach 85.63% and 95.30%, the IoU and F1_Score of wheat are 93.76% and 96.78%, and the IoU and F1_Score of rape are 74.24% and 85.51%, respectively. The identification accuracy of this model is significantly better than that of the original DeepLab V3+ model and other related models. The proposed method in this paper can accurately extract the distribution information of wheat and rape from high-resolution remote sensing images. Coral reefs are an essential source of marine biodiversity, but they are declining at an alarming rate under the combined effects of global change and human pressure. A precise mapping of coral reef habitat with high spatial and time resolutions has become a necessary step for monitoring their health and evolution. This mapping can be achieved remotely thanks to satellite imagery coupled with machine-learning algorithms. In this paper, we review the different satellites used in recent literature, as well as the most common and efficient machine-learning methods. To account for the recent explosion of published research on coral reel mapping, we especially focus on the papers published between 2018 and 2020. Our review study indicates that object-based methods provide more accurate results than pixel-based ones, and that the most accurate methods are Support Vector Machine and Random Forest. We emphasize that the satellites with the highest spatial resolution provide the best images for benthic habitat mapping. We also highlight that preprocessing steps (water column correction, sunglint removal, etc.) and additional inputs (bathymetry data, aerial photographs, etc.) can significantly improve the mapping accuracy. Unsupervised change detection of land cover in multispectral satellite remote sensing images with a spatial resolution of 2–5 m has always been a challenging task. This paper presents a method of detecting land cover changes in high-spatial-resolution remote sensing imagery. This method has three characteristics: (1) Extended center-symmetric local binary pattern (XCS-LBP) is used to extract image features to emphasize spatial context information in initial change detection. Then, spectral information is combined to improve the accuracy of change detection. (2) The local histogram distance of XCS-LBP features is used as the change vector to improve the expression of change information. (3) A progressive Otsu method is developed for threshold segmentation of the change vector to reduce the false detection rate. Four datasets with different landscape complexities and seven state-of-the-art unsupervised change detection methods were used to test the performance of the proposed method. Quantitative results showed that the proposed method reduced the false detection rate and improved the accuracy of the detection of land cover changes. The F1 score achieved by the proposed method reached 0.8688, 0.8867, 0.7725, and 0.6634, respectively, which are higher than the highest corresponding F1 score achieved by the benchmark methods (0.8533, 0.8549, 0.6545, and 0.5895, respectively). The identification of maritime targets plays a critical role in ensuring maritime safety and safeguarding against potential threats. While satellite remote-sensing imagery serves as the primary data source for monitoring maritime targets, it only provides positional and morphological characteristics without detailed identity information, presenting limitations as a sole data source. To address this issue, this paper proposes a method for enhancing maritime target identification and positioning accuracy through the fusion of Automatic Identification System (AIS) data and satellite remote-sensing imagery. The AIS utilizes radio communication to acquire multidimensional feature information describing targets, serving as an auxiliary data source to complement the limitations of image data and achieve maritime target identification. Additionally, the positional information provided by the AIS can serve as maritime control points to correct positioning errors and enhance accuracy. By utilizing data from the Jilin-1 Spectral-01 satellite imagery with a resolution of 5 m and AIS data, the feasibility of the proposed method is validated through experiments. Following preprocessing, maritime target fusion is achieved using a point-set matching algorithm based on positional features and a fuzzy comprehensive decision method incorporating attribute features. Subsequently, the successful fusion of target points is utilized for positioning error correction. Experimental results demonstrate a significant improvement in maritime target positioning accuracy compared to raw data, with over a 70% reduction in root mean square error and positioning errors controlled within 4 pixels, providing relatively accurate target positions that essentially meet practical requirements. Change detection is widely used in the field of building monitoring. In recent years, the progress of remote sensing image technology has provided high-resolution data. However, unlike other tasks, change detection focuses on the difference between dual-input images, so the interaction between bi-temporal features is crucial. However, the existing methods have not fully tapped the potential of multi-scale bi-temporal features to interact layer by layer. Therefore, this paper proposes a multi-scale feature interaction network (MFINet). The network realizes the information interaction of multi-temporal images by inserting a bi-temporal feature interaction layer (BFIL) between backbone networks at the same level, guides the attention to focus on the difference region, and suppresses the interference. At the same time, a double temporal feature fusion layer (BFFL) is used at the end of the coding layer to extract subtle difference features. By introducing the transformer decoding layer and improving the recovery effect of the feature size, the ability of the network to accurately capture the details and contour information of the building is further improved. The F1 of our model on the public dataset LEVIR-CD reaches 90.12%, which shows better accuracy and generalization performance than many state-of-the-art change detection models. Morphological features of the Mediterranean Sea basin have recently been precursors to a significant increase in the formation of extreme events, in relation to climate change effects. It happens very frequently that rotating air masses and the formation of mesoscale vortices can evolve into events with characteristics similar to large-scale tropical cyclones. Generally, they are less intense, with smaller size and duration; thus, they are called Medicanes, a short name for Mediterranean hurricanes, or tropical-like cyclones (TLCs). In this paper, we propose a new perspective for the study and analysis of cyclonic events, starting with data and images acquired from satellites and focusing on the diagnostics of the evolution of atmospheric parameters for these events. More precisely, satellite remote sensing techniques are employed to elaborate on different high spatial-resolution satellite images of the events at a given sensing time. Two case studies are examined, taking into account their development into Medicane stages: Ianos, which intensified in the Ionian Sea and reached the coast of Greece between 14 and 21 September 2020, and Apollo, which impacted Mediterranean latitudes with a long tracking from 24 October to 2 November 2021. For these events, 20 images were acquired from two different satellite sensors, onboard two low-Earth orbit (LEO) platforms, by deeply exploiting their thermal infrared (TIR) spectral channels. A useful extraction of significant physical information was carried out from every image, highlighting several atmospheric quantities, including temperature and altitude layers from the top of the cloud, vertical temperature gradient, atmospheric pressure field, and deep convection cloud. The diagnostics of the two events were investigated through the spatial scale capabilities of the instruments and the spatiotemporal evolution of the cyclones, including the comparison between satellite data and recording data from the BOLAM forecasting model. In addition, 384 images were extracted from the geostationary (GEO) satellite platform for the investigation of the events' one-day structure intensification, by implementing time as the third dimension. Due to the limited semantic information extraction with small objects and difficulty in distinguishing similar targets, it brings great challenges to target detection in remote sensing scenarios, which results in poor detection performance. This paper proposes an improved YOLOv5 remote sensing image target detection algorithm, SEB-YOLO (SPD-Conv + ECSPP + Bi-FPN + YOLOv5). Firstly, the space-to-depth (SPD) layer followed by a non-strided convolution (Conv) layer module (SPD-Conv) was used to reconstruct the backbone network, which retained the global features and reduced the feature loss. Meanwhile, the pooling module with the attention mechanism of the final layer of the backbone network was designed to help the network better identify and locate the target. Furthermore, a bidirectional feature pyramid network (Bi-FPN) with bilinear interpolation upsampling was added to improve bidirectional cross-scale connection and weighted feature fusion. Finally, the decoupled head is introduced to enhance the model convergence and solve the contradiction between the classification task and the regression task. Experimental results on NWPU VHR-10 and RSOD datasets show that the mAP of the proposed algorithm reaches 93.5% and 93.9%respectively, which is 4.0% and 5.3% higher than that of the original YOLOv5l algorithm. Assessing the performance of optical imaging systems is crucial to evaluate their capability to satisfy the product requirements for an Earth Observation (EO) mission. In particular, the evaluation of image quality is undoubtedly one of the most important, critical and problematic aspects of remote sensing. It involves not only pre-flight analyses, but also continuous monitoring throughout the operational lifetime of the observing system. The Ground Sampling Distance (GSD) of the imaging system is often the only parameter used to quantify its spatial resolution, i.e., its capability to resolve objects on the ground. In practice, this feature is also heavily influenced by other image quality parameters such as the image sharpness and Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). However, these last two aspects are often analysed separately, using unrelated methodologies, complicating the image quality assessment and posing standardisation issues. To this end, we expanded the features of our Automatic Edge Method (AEM), which was originally developed to simplify and automate the estimate of sharpness metrics, to also extract the image SNR. In this paper we applied the AEM to a wide range of optical satellite images characterised by different GSD and Pixel Size (PS) with the objective to explore the nature of the relationship between the components of overall image quality (image sharpness, SNR) and product geometric resampling (expressed in terms of GSD/PS ratio). Our main objective is to quantify how the sharpness and the radiometric quality of an image product are affected by different product geometric resampling strategies, i.e., by distributing imagery with a PS larger or smaller than the GSD of the imaging system. The AEM allowed us to explore this relationship by relying on a vast amount of data points, which provide a robust statistical significance to the results expressed in terms of sharpness metrics and SNR means. The results indicate the existence of a direct relationship between the product geometric resampling and the overall image quality, and also highlight a good degree of correlation between the image sharpness and SNR. Convolutional neural networks (CNN) have shown great results for object-detection tasks by learning texture and pattern-extraction filters. However, object-level interactions are harder to grasp without increasing the complexity of the architectures. On the other hand, Point Process models propose to solve the detection of the configuration of objects as a whole, allowing the factoring in of the image data and the objects' prior interactions. In this paper, we propose combining the information extracted by a CNN with priors on objects within a Markov Marked Point Process framework. We also propose a method to learn the parameters of this Energy-Based Model. We apply this model to the detection of small vehicles in optical satellite imagery, where the image information needs to be complemented with object interaction priors because of noise and small object sizes. Multi-scale object detection is critical for analyzing remote sensing images. Traditional feature pyramid networks, which are aimed at accommodating objects of varying sizes through multi-level feature extraction, face significant challenges due to the diverse scale variations present in remote sensing images. This situation often forces single-level features to span a broad spectrum of object sizes, complicating accurate localization and classification. To tackle these challenges, this paper proposes an innovative algorithm that incorporates an adaptive multi-scale feature enhancement and fusion module (ASEM), which enhances remote sensing image object detection through sophisticated multi-scale feature fusion. Our method begins by employing a feature pyramid to gather coarse multi-scale features. Subsequently, it integrates a fine-grained feature extraction module at each level, utilizing atrous convolutions with varied dilation rates to refine multi-scale features, which markedly improves the information capture from widely varied object scales. Furthermore, an adaptive enhancement module is applied to the features of each level by employing an attention mechanism for feature fusion. This strategy concentrates on the features of critical scale, which significantly enhance the effectiveness of capturing essential feature information. Compared with the baseline method, namely, Rotated FasterRCNN, our method achieved an mAP of 74.21% (0.81%) on the DOTA-v1.0 dataset and an mAP of 84.90% (+9.2%) on the HRSC2016 dataset. The current image generative models have achieved a remarkably realistic image quality, offering numerous academic and industrial applications. However, to ensure these models are used for benign purposes, it is essential to develop tools that definitively detect whether an image has been synthetically generated. Consequently, several detectors with excellent performance in computer vision applications have been developed. However, these detectors cannot be directly applied as they areto multi-spectral satellite images, necessitating the training of new models. While two-class classifiers generally achieve high detection accuracies, they struggle to generalize to image domains and generative architectures different from those encountered during training. In this paper, we propose a one-class classifier based on Vector Quantized Variational Autoencoder 2 (VQ-VAE 2) features to overcome the limitations of two-class classifiers. We start by highlighting the generalization problem faced by binary classifiers. This was demonstrated by training and testing an EfficientNet-B4 architecture on multiple multi-spectral datasets. We then illustrate that the VQ-VAE 2-based classifier, which was trained exclusively on pristine images, could detect images from different domains and generated by architectures not encountered during training. Finally, we conducted a head-to-head comparison between the two classifiers on the same generated datasets, emphasizing the superior generalization capabilities of the VQ-VAE 2-based detector, wherewe obtained a probability of detection at a 0.05 false alarm rate of 1 for the blue and red channels when using the VQ-VAE 2-based detector, and 0.72 when we used the EfficientNet-B4 classifier. Oriented object detection for remote sensing images poses formidable challenges due to arbitrary orientation, diverse scales, and densely distributed targets (e.g., across terrain). Current investigations in remote sensing object detection have primarily focused on improving the representation of oriented bounding boxes yet have neglected the significant orientation information of targets in remote sensing contexts. Recent investigations point out that the inclusion and fusion of orientation information yields substantial benefits in training an accurate oriented object system. In this paper, we propose a simple but effective orientation information integrating (OII) network comprising two main parts: the orientation information highlighting (OIH) module and orientation feature fusion (OFF) module. The OIH module extracts orientation features from those produced by the backbone by modeling the frequency information of spatial features. Given that low-frequency components in an image capture its primary content, and high-frequency components contribute to its intricate details and edges, the transformation from the spatial domain to the frequency domain can effectively emphasize the orientation information of images. Subsequently, our OFF module employs a combination of a CNN attention mechanism and self-attention to derive weights for orientation features and original features. These derived weights are adopted to adaptively enhance the original features, resulting in integrated features that contain enriched orientation information. Given the inherent limitation of the original spatial attention weights in explicitly capturing orientation nuances, the incorporation of the introduced orientation weights serves as a pivotal tool to accentuate and delineate orientation information related to targets. Semantic segmentation of remote sensing (RS) images is vital in various practical applications, including urban construction planning, natural disaster monitoring, and land resources investigation. However, RS images are captured by airplanes or satellites at high altitudes and long distances, resulting in ground objects of the same category being scattered in various corners of the image. Moreover, objects of different sizes appear simultaneously in RS images. For example, some objects occupy a large area in urban scenes, while others only have small regions. Technically, the above two universal situations pose significant challenges to the segmentation with a high quality for RS images. Based on these observations, this paper proposes a Mask2Former with an improved query (IQ2Former) for this task. The fundamental motivation behind the IQ2Former is to enhance the capability of the query of Mask2Former by exploiting the characteristics of RS images well. First, we propose the Query Scenario Module (QSM), which aims to learn and group the queries from feature maps, allowing the selection of distinct scenarios such as the urban and rural areas, building clusters, and parking lots. Second, we design the query position module (QPM), which is developed to assign the image position information to each query without increasing the number of parameters, thereby enhancing the model's sensitivity to small targets in complex scenarios. Finally, we propose the query attention module (QAM), which is constructed to leverage the characteristics of query attention to extract valuable features from the preceding queries. Being positioned between the duplicated transformer decoder layers, QAM ensures the comprehensive utilization of the supervisory information and the exploitation of those fine-grained details. Architecturally, the QSM, QPM, and QAM as well as an end-to-end model are assembled to achieve high-quality semantic segmentation. In comparison to the classical or state-of-the-art models (FCN, PSPNet, DeepLabV3+, OCRNet, UPerNet, MaskFormer, Mask2Former), IQ2Former has demonstrated exceptional performance across three publicly challenging remote-sensing image datasets, 83.59 mIoU on the Vaihingen dataset, 87.89 mIoU on Potsdam dataset, and 56.31 mIoU on LoveDA dataset. Remote sensing images change detection technology has become a popular tool for monitoring the change type, area, and distribution of land cover, including cultivated land, forest land, photovoltaic, roads, and buildings. However, traditional methods which rely on pre-annotation and on-site verification are time-consuming and challenging to meet timeliness requirements. With the emergence of artificial intelligence, this paper proposes an automatic change detection model and a crowdsourcing collaborative framework. The framework uses human-in-the-loop technology and an active learning approach to transform the manual interpretation method into a human-machine collaborative intelligent interpretation method. This low-cost and high-efficiency framework aims to solve the problem of weak model generalization caused by the lack of annotated data in change detection. The proposed framework can effectively incorporate expert domain knowledge and reduce the cost of data annotation while improving model performance. To ensure data quality, a crowdsourcing quality control model is constructed to evaluate the annotation qualification of the annotators and check their annotation results. Furthermore, a prototype of automatic detection and crowdsourcing collaborative annotation management platform is developed, which integrates annotation, crowdsourcing quality control, and change detection applications. To address the challenges of handling imprecise building boundary information and reducing false-positive outcomes during the process of detecting building changes in remote sensing images, this paper proposes a Siamese transformer architecture based on a difference module. This method introduces a layered transformer to provide global context modeling capability and multiscale features to better process building boundary information, and a difference module is used to better obtain the difference features of a building before and after a change. The difference features before and after the change are then fused, and the fused difference features are used to generate a change map, which reduces the false-positive problem to a certain extent. Experiments were conducted on two publicly available building change detection datasets, LEVIR-CD and WHU-CD. The F1 scores for LEVIR-CD and WHU-CD reached 89.58% and 84.51%, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that when utilized for building change detection in remote sensing images, the proposed method exhibits improved robustness and detection performance. Anthropogenic and environmental processes present unique challenges for preserving cultural heritage in North Africa. Large parts of this region are characterised by unfavourable arid and semi-arid conditions and rapid changes to the landscapes caused by heightened regional development (e.g., urban expansion, road building, agricultural intensification, and socio-political conflicts). As a result, we are facing a fast-paced disappearance of heritage sites in regions that are still poorly understood. Following this, the utilisation of Earth observation data through aerial photographs and satellite imagery has emerged as an unmatched tool in the exploration of endangered archaeological heritage. Drawing on this context, this paper underscores the critical significance of incorporating digital research methods, such as remote sensing, GIS, or cartographic analysis, to ensure the evaluation and (digital) preservation of the historical sites along these vulnerable areas. Change detection (CD) stands out as a pivotal yet challenging task in the interpretation of remote sensing images. Significant developments have been witnessed, particularly with the rapid advancements in deep learning techniques. Nevertheless, challenges such as incomplete detection targets and unsmooth boundaries remain as most CD methods suffer from ineffective feature fusion. Therefore, this paper presents a multi-scale gated fusion network (MSGFNet) to improve the accuracy of CD results. To effectively extract bi-temporal features, the EfficientNetB4 model based on a Siamese network is employed. Subsequently, we propose a multi-scale gated fusion module (MSGFM) that comprises a multi-scale progressive fusion (MSPF) unit and a gated weight adaptive fusion (GWAF) unit, aimed at fusing bi-temporal multi-scale features to maintain boundary details and detect completely changed targets. Finally, we use the simple yet efficient UNet structure to recover the feature maps and predict results. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the MSGFNet, the LEVIR-CD, WHU-CD, and SYSU-CD datasets were utilized, and the MSGFNet achieved F1 scores of 90.86%, 92.46%, and 80.39% on the three datasets, respectively. With the emergence of the Smart City concept, the rapid advancement of urban three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction becomes imperative. While current developments in the field of 3D reconstruction have enabled the generation of 3D products such as Digital Surface Models (DSM), challenges persist in accurately reconstructing shadows, handling occlusions, and addressing low-texture areas in very-high-resolution remote sensing images. These challenges often lead to difficulties in calculating satisfactory disparity maps using existing stereo matching methods, thereby reducing the accuracy of 3D reconstruction. This issue is particularly pronounced in urban scenes, which contain numerous super high-rise and densely distributed buildings, resulting in large disparity values and occluded regions in stereo image pairs, and further leading to a large number of mismatched points in the obtained disparity map. In response to these challenges, this paper proposes a method to refine the disparity in urban scenes based on open-source GIS data. First, we register the GIS data with the epipolar-rectified images since there always exists unignorable geolocation errors between them. Specifically, buildings with different heights present different offsets in GIS data registering; thus, we perform multi-modal matching for each building and merge them into the final building mask. Subsequently, a two-layer optimization process is applied to the initial disparity map based on the building mask, encompassing both global and local optimization. Finally, we perform a post-correction on the building facades to obtain the final refined disparity map that can be employed for high-precision 3D reconstruction. Experimental results on SuperView-1, GaoFen-7, and GeoEye satellite images show that the proposed method has the ability to correct the occluded and mismatched areas in the initial disparity map generated by both hand-crafted and deep-learning stereo matching methods. The DSM generated by the refined disparity reduces the average height error from 2.2 m to 1.6 m, which demonstrates superior performance compared with other disparity refinement methods. Furthermore, the proposed method is able to improve the integrity of the target structure and present steeper building facades and complete roofs, which are conducive to subsequent 3D model generation. High dynamic range imaging (HDRI) is an essential task in remote sensing, enhancing low dynamic range (LDR) remote sensing images and benefiting downstream tasks, such as object detection and image segmentation. However, conventional frame-based HDRI methods may encounter challenges in real-world scenarios due to the limited information inherent in a single image captured by conventional cameras. In this paper, an event-based remote sensing HDR imaging framework is proposed to address this problem, denoted as ERS-HDRI, which reconstructs the remote sensing HDR image from a single-exposure LDR image and its concurrent event streams. The proposed ERS-HDRI leverages a coarse-to-fine framework, incorporating the event-based dynamic range enhancement (E-DRE) network and the gradient-enhanced HDR reconstruction (G-HDRR) network. Specifically, to efficiently achieve dynamic range fusion from different domains, the E-DRE network is designed to extract the dynamic range features from LDR frames and events and perform intra- and cross-attention operations to adaptively fuse multi-modal data. A denoise network and a dense feature fusion network are then employed for the generation of the coarse, clean HDR image. Then, the G-HDRR network, with its gradient enhancement module and multiscale fusion module, performs structure enforcement on the coarse HDR image and generates a fine informative HDR image. In addition, this work introduces a specialized hybrid imaging system and a novel, real-world event-based remote sensing HDRI dataset that contains aligned remote sensing LDR images, remote sensing HDR images, and concurrent event streams for evaluation. Predicting particulate matter with a diameter of 10 μm (PM10) is crucial due to its impact on human health and the environment. Today, aerosol optical depth (AOD) offers high resolution and wide coverage, making it a viable way to estimate PM concentrations. Recent years have also witnessed in-creasing promise in refining air quality predictions via deep neural network (DNN) models, out-performing other techniques. However, learning the weights and biases of the DNN is a task classified as an NP-hard problem. Current approaches such as gradient-based methods exhibit significant limitations, such as the risk of becoming ensnared in local minimal within multi-objective loss functions, substantial computational requirements, and the requirement for continuous objective functions. To tackle these challenges, this paper introduces a novel approach that combines the binary gray wolf optimizer (BGWO) with DNN to improve the optimization of models for air pollution prediction. The BGWO algorithm, inspired by the behavior of gray wolves, is used to optimize both the weight and bias of the DNN. In the proposed BGWO, a novel sigmoid function is proposed as a transfer function to adjust the position of the wolves. This study gathers meteorological data, topographic information, PM10 pollution data, and satellite images. Data preparation includes tasks such as noise removal and handling missing data. The proposed approach is evaluated through cross-validation using metrics such as correlation rate, R square, root-mean-square error (RMSE), and accuracy. The effectiveness of the BGWO-DNN framework is compared to seven other machine learning (ML) models. The experimental evaluation of the BGWO-DNN method using air pollution data shows its superior performance compared with traditional ML techniques. The BGWO-DNN, CapSA-DNN, and BBO-DNN models achieved the lowest RMSE values of 16.28, 19.26, and 20.74, respectively. Conversely, the SVM-Linear and GBM algorithms displayed the highest levels of error, yielding RMSE values of 36.82 and 32.50, respectively. The BGWO-DNN algorithm secured the highest R2 (88.21%) and accuracy (93.17%) values, signifying its superior performance compared with other models. Additionally, the correlation between predicted and actual values shows that the proposed model surpasses the performance of other ML techniques. Forest fires are one of the most devastating natural disasters, and technologies based on remote sensing satellite data for fire prevention and control have developed rapidly in recent years. Early forest fire smoke in remote sensing images, on the other hand, is thin and tiny in area, making it difficult to detect. Satellites with high spatial resolution sensors can collect high-resolution photographs of smoke, however the impact of the satellite's repeat access time to the same area means that forest fire smoke cannot be detected in time. Because of their low spatial resolution, photos taken by satellites with shorter return durations cannot capture small regions of smoke. This paper presents an early smoke detection method for forest fires that combines a super-resolution reconstruction network and a smoke segmentation network to address these issues. First, a high-resolution remote sensing multispectral picture dataset of forest fire smoke was created, which included diverse years, seasons, areas, and land coverings. The rebuilt high-resolution images were then obtained using a super-resolution reconstruction network. To eliminate data redundancy and enhance recognition accuracy, it was determined experimentally that the M11 band (2225–2275 nm) is more sensitive to perform smoke segmentation in VIIRS images. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated experimentally that improving the accuracy of reconstructed images is more effective than improving perceptual quality for smoke recognition. The final results of the super-resolution image segmentation experiment conducted in this paper show that the smoke segmentation results have a similarity coefficient of 0.742 to the segmentation results obtained using high-resolution satellite images, indicating that our method can effectively segment smoke pixels in low-resolution remote sensing images and provide early warning of forest fires. Multi-class geospatial object detection in high-resolution remote sensing images has significant potential in various domains such as industrial production, military warning, disaster monitoring, and urban planning. However, the traditional process of remote sensing object detection involves several time-consuming steps, including image acquisition, image download, ground processing, and object detection. These steps may not be suitable for tasks with shorter timeliness requirements, such as military warning and disaster monitoring. Additionally, the transmission of massive data from satellites to the ground is limited by bandwidth, resulting in time delays and redundant information, such as cloud coverage images. To address these challenges and achieve efficient utilization of information, this paper proposes a comprehensive on-board multi-class geospatial object detection scheme. The proposed scheme consists of several steps. Firstly, the satellite imagery is sliced, and the PID-Net (Proportional-Integral-Derivative Network) method is employed to detect and filter out cloud-covered tiles. Subsequently, our Manhattan Intersection over Union (MIOU) loss-based YOLO (You Only Look Once) v7-Tiny method is used to detect remote-sensing objects in the remaining tiles. Finally, the detection results are mapped back to the original image, and the truncated NMS (Non-Maximum Suppression) method is utilized to filter out repeated and noisy boxes. To validate the reliability of the scheme, this paper creates a new dataset called DOTA-CD (Dataset for Object Detection in Aerial Images-Cloud Detection). With the wide application of remote sensing technology, target detection based on deep learning has become a research hotspot in the field of remote sensing. In this paper, aimed at the problems of the existing deep-learning-based desert land intelligent extraction methods, such as the spectral similarity of features and unclear texture features, we propose a multispectral remote sensing image desert land intelligent extraction method that takes into account band information. Firstly, we built a desert land intelligent interpretation dataset based on band weighting to enhance the desert land foreground features of the images. On this basis, we introduced the deformable convolution adaptive feature extraction capability to U-Net and developed the Y-Net model to extract desert land from Landsat remote sensing images covering the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Finally, in order to analyze the spatial and temporal trends of the desert land in the study area, we used a structural equation model (SEM) to evaluate the direct and indirect effects of natural conditions and human activities, i.e., population density (PD), livestock volume (LS), evaporation (Evp), temperature (T), days of sandy wind conditions (LD), humidity (RH), precipitation (P), anthropogenic disturbance index (Adi), and cultivated land (CL). The results show that the F1-score of the Y-Net model proposed in this paper is 95.6%, which is 11.5% more than that of U-Net. Based on the Landsat satellite images, the area of desert land in the study area for six periods from 1990 to 2020 was extracted. The results show that the area of desert land in the study area first increased and then decreased. The main influencing factors have been precipitation, humidity, and anthropogenic disturbance, for which the path coefficients are 0.646, 0.615, and 0.367, respectively. With the accelerated development of artificial intelligence, remote-sensing image technologies have gained widespread attention in smart cities. In recent years, remote sensing object detection research has focused on detecting and counting small dense objects in large remote sensing scenes. Small object detection, as a branch of object detection, remains a significant challenge in research due to the image resolution, size, number, and orientation of objects, among other factors. This paper examines object detection based on deep learning and its applications for small object detection in remote sensing. To overcome the limitations of traditional on-orbit modulation function transfer (MTF) measurement methods that are heavily dependent on natural features, scenery, artificial edges, and point source targets, this paper presents an on-orbit MTF measurement method of remote sensing imager based on the refined image kernel (RIK) acquired directly from remote sensing images. First, the kernel is estimated from some remote sensing sub-images with rich texture details by using an iterative support detection (ISD) algorithm; then, it is refined by central pixel energy concentration (EC) to obtain the RIK. Secondly, the MTF curves are calculated by interpolating RIK and Fourier transform. Finally, the final MTF is the average value of MTFs at Nyquist frequency acquired by each RIK. To demonstrate the feasibility and validity of this method, the MTFs were compared to the result of the ISO12233 edge method with an error of no more than 7%. The relative error of the measured results does not exceed 5% for image signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) above 20dB. The results obtained from the on-orbit MTF measurement using remote sensing images of the Jilin-1 satellite have a maximum error of less than 2% compared with the ISO12233 edge method. These demonstrate that the method proposed in this paper supplies highly accurate and robust results and can successfully increase the efficiency of on-orbit MTF measurement, providing a reference for high-frequency monitoring of satellite on-orbit stability and their optical imaging quality. For many remote sensing applications, the instantaneous waterline on the image is critical boundary information to separate land and water and for other purposes. Accurate waterline extraction from satellite images is a desirable feature in such applications. Due to the complex topography of low tidal flats and their indistinct spatial and spectral characteristics on satellite imagery, the waterline extraction for tidal flats (especially at low tides) from remote sensing images has always been a technically challenging problem. We developed a novel method to extract waterline from satellite images, assuming that the waterline's elevation is level. This paper explores the utilization of bathymetry during waterline extraction and presents a novel approach to tackle the waterline extraction issue, especially for low tidal flats, using remote sensing images at mid/high tide, when most of the tidal flat area is filled with seawater. Repeated optical satellite images are easily accessible in the current days; the proposed approach first generates the bathymetry map using the mid/high-tide satellite image, and then the initial waterline is extracted using traditional methods from the low-tide satellite image; the isobath (depth contour lines of bathymetry), which corresponds to the initial waterline is robustly estimated, and finally an area-based optimization algorithm is proposed and applied to both isobath and initial waterline to obtain the final optimized waterline. A series of experiments using Sentinel-2 multispectral images are conducted on Jibei Island of Penghu Archipelago and Chongming Island to demonstrate this proposed strategy. The results from the proposed approach are compared with the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) methods. The results indicate that more accurate waterlines can be extracted using the proposed approach, and it is very suitable for waterline extraction for tidal flats, especially at low tides. Accurate delineation of individual agricultural plots, the foundational units for agriculture-based activities, is crucial for effective government oversight of agricultural productivity and land utilization. To improve the accuracy of plot segmentation in high-resolution remote sensing images, the paper collects GF-2 satellite remote sensing images, uses ArcGIS10.3.1 software to establish datasets, and builds UNet, SegNet, DeeplabV3+, and TransUNet neural network frameworks, respectively, for experimental analysis. Then, the TransUNet network with the best segmentation effects is optimized in both the residual module and the skip connection to further improve its performance for plot segmentation in high-resolution remote sensing images. This article introduces Deformable ConvNets in the residual module to improve the original ResNet50 feature extraction network and combines the convolutional block attention module (CBAM) at the skip connection to calculate and improve the skip connection steps. Experimental results indicate that the optimized remote sensing plot segmentation algorithm based on the TransUNet network achieves an Accuracy of 86.02%, a Recall of 83.32%, an F1-score of 84.67%, and an Intersection over Union (IOU) of 86.90%. Compared to the original TransUNet network for remote sensing land parcel segmentation, whose F1-S is 81.94% and whose IoU is 69.41%, the optimized TransUNet network has significantly improved the performance of remote sensing land parcel segmentation, which verifies the effectiveness and reliability of the plot segmentation algorithm. Reservoirs are essential hydraulic facilities for water resource allocation in Xinjiang. Since the 1950s, many reservoirs have been constructed for oasis water resource utilization in Xinjiang, enhancing the storage capacity of water resources. There are a few intact and open reservoir archives containing both geolocations and hydraulic attributes, such as the reservoir completion year, which can facilitate our understanding of the correlation between hydraulic engineering and oasis expansion. This paper mapped all the reservoirs of Xinjiang using Sentinel-2 MSI images from 2022. It associated their attributes with the reservoir's extent, such as the capacity, area, complete year, altitude, etc., by consulting historical almanac data to establish a full elemental dataset with both geographic and attribute information. Furthermore, the spatial variability and historical process of the reservoirs were discussed against geomorphic information and oasis evolution. The results showed that 804 reservoirs were mapped cumulatively in Xinjiang up to 2022, and 1960–1980 and 2005–2010 are the rapidly developed periods. The construction history of the reservoirs indicates that reservoirs' locations have the spatial tendency to shift from being in oasis plain areas to mountainous areas, and the newly built reservoirs showed a trend of miniaturization in area and maximization in volume. The ground is typically hidden by cloud and snow in satellite images, which have a similar visible spectrum and complex spatial distribution characteristics. The detection of cloud and snow is important for increasing image availability and studying climate change. To address the issues of the low classification accuracy and poor generalization effect by the traditional threshold method, as well as the problems of the misdetection of overlapping regions, rough segmentation results, and a loss of boundary details in existing algorithms, this paper designed a Multi-level Attention Interaction Network (MAINet). The MAINet uses a modified ResNet50 to extract features and introduces a Detail Feature Extraction module to extract multi-level information and reduce the loss of details. In the last down-sampling, the Deep Multi-head Information Enhancement module combines a CNN and a Transformer structure to make deep semantic features more distinct and reduce redundant information. Then, the Feature Interactive and Fusion Up-sampling module enhances the information extraction of deep and shallow information and, then, guides and aggregates each to make the learned semantic features more comprehensive, which can better recover remote sensing images and increase the prediction accuracy. The MAINet model we propose performed satisfactorily in handling cloud and snow detection and segmentation tasks in multiple scenarios. The classification of ship images has become a significant area of research within the remote sensing community due to its potential applications in maritime security, traffic monitoring, and environmental protection. Traditional monitoring methods like the Automated Identification System (AIS) and the Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) have their limitations, such as challenges with sea clutter and the problem of ships turning off their transponders. Additionally, classifying ship images in remote sensing is a complex task due to the spatial arrangement of geospatial objects, complex backgrounds, and the resolution limitations of sensor platforms. To address these challenges, this paper introduces a novel approach that leverages a unique dataset termed Heterogeneous Ship data and a new technique called the Spatial–Channel Attention with Bilinear Pooling Network (SCABPNet). First, we introduce the Heterogeneous Ship data, which combines Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical satellite imagery, to leverage the complementary features of the SAR and optical modalities, thereby providing a richer and more-diverse set of features for ship classification. Second, we designed a custom layer, called the Spatial–Channel Attention with Bilinear Pooling (SCABP) layer. This layer sequentially applies the spatial attention, channel attention, and bilinear pooling techniques to enhance the feature representation by focusing on extracting informative and discriminative features from input feature maps, then classify them. Finally, we integrated the SCABP layer into a deep neural network to create a novel model named the SCABPNet model, which is used to classify images in the proposed Heterogeneous Ship data. Our experiments showed that the SCABPNet model demonstrated superior performance, surpassing the results of several state-of-the-art deep learning models. SCABPNet achieved an accuracy of 97.67% on the proposed Heterogeneous Ship dataset during testing. This performance underscores SCABPNet's capability to focus on ship-specific features while suppressing background noise and feature redundancy. Fire accidents cause alarming damage. They result in the loss of human lives, damage to property, and significant financial losses. Early fire ignition detection systems, particularly smoke detection systems, play a crucial role in enabling effective firefighting efforts. In this paper, a novel DL (Deep Learning) method, namely BoucaNet, is introduced for recognizing smoke on satellite images while addressing the associated challenging limitations. BoucaNet combines the strengths of the deep CNN EfficientNet v2 and the vision transformer EfficientFormer v2 for identifying smoke, cloud, haze, dust, land, and seaside classes. Extensive results demonstrate that BoucaNet achieved high performance, with an accuracy of 93.67%, an F1-score of 93.64%, and an inference time of 0.16 seconds compared with baseline methods. BoucaNet also showed a robust ability to overcome challenges, including complex backgrounds; detecting small smoke zones; handling varying smoke features such as size, shape, and color; and handling visual similarities between smoke, clouds, dust, and haze. Guilin is situated in the southern part of China with abundant rainfall. There are 137 reservoirs, which are widely used for irrigation, flood control, water supply and power generation. However, there has been a lack of systematic and full-coverage remote sensing monitoring of reservoir dams for a long time. According to the latest public literature, high-resolution unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing has not been used to detect changes on the reservoir dams of Guilin. In this paper, an intelligent segmentation change detection method is proposed to complete the detection of dam change based on multitemporal high-resolution UAV remote sensing data. Firstly, an enhanced GrabCut that fuses the linear spectral clustering (LSC) superpixel mapping matrix and the Sobel edge operator is proposed to extract the features of reservoir dams. The edge operator is introduced into GrabCut to redefine the new energy function's smooth item, which makes the segmentation results of enhanced GrabCut more robust and accurate. Then, through image registration, the multitemporal dam extraction results are unified to the same coordinate system to complete the difference operation, and finally the dam change results are obtained. The experimental results of two representative reservoir dams in Guilin show that the proposed method can achieve a very high accuracy of change detection, which is an important reference for related research. Recently, deep learning-based object detection techniques have arisen alongside time-consuming training and data collection challenges. Although few-shot learning techniques can boost models with few samples to lighten the training load, these approaches still need to be improved when applied to remote-sensing images. Objects in remote-sensing images are often small with an uncertain scale. An insufficient amount of samples would further aggravate this issue, leading to poor detection performance. This paper proposes a Gaussian-scale enhancement (GSE) strategy and a multi-branch patch-embedding attention aggregation (MPEAA) module for cross-scale few-shot object detection to address this issue. High-resolution remote-sensing images cover more feature information, including texture, structure, shape, and other geometric details, while the relationships among target features are more complex. These factors make it more complicated for classical convolutional neural networks to obtain ideal results when performing a feature classification on remote-sensing images. To address this issue, we proposed an attention-based multiscale max-pooling dense network (DMAU-Net), which is based on U-Net for ground object classification. The network is designed with an integrated max-pooling module that incorporates dense connections in the encoder part to enhance the quality of the feature map, and thus improve the feature-extraction capability of the network. Equally, in the decoding, we introduce the Efficient Channel Attention (ECA) module, which can strengthen the effective features and suppress the irrelevant information. To validate the ground object classification performance of the multi-pooling integration network proposed in this paper, we conducted experiments on the Vaihingen and Potsdam datasets provided by the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS). We compared DMAU-Net with other mainstream semantic segmentation models. The experimental results show that the DMAU-Net proposed in this paper effectively improves the accuracy of the feature classification of high-resolution remote-sensing images. Current-day volcanic activity in the Azores archipelago is characterized by seismic events and secondary manifestations of volcanism. Remote sensing techniques have been widely employed to monitor deformation in volcanic systems, map lava flows, or detect high-temperature gas emissions. However, using satellite imagery, it is still challenging to identify low-magnitude thermal changes in a volcanic system. In 2010, after drilling a well for geothermal exploration on the northern flank of Fogo Volcano on São Miguel Island, a new degassing and thermal area emerged with maximum temperatures of 100 °C. In the present paper, using the ASTER sensor, we observed changes in the near-infrared signals (15 m spatial resolution) six months after the anomaly emerged. In contrast, the thermal signal (90 m spatial resolution) only changed its threshold value one and a half years after the anomaly was recognized. The results show that wavelength and spatial resolution can influence the response time in detecting changes in a system. This paper reiterates the importance of using thermal imaging and high spatial resolution images to monitor and map thermal anomalies in hydrothermal systems such as those found in the Azores. Mine pollution from mining activities is often widely recognised as a serious threat to public health, with mine solid waste causing problems such as tailings pond accumulation, which is considered the biggest hidden danger. The construction of tailings ponds not only causes land occupation and vegetation damage but also brings about potential environmental pollution, such as water and dust pollution, posing a health risk to nearby residents. If remote sensing images and machine learning techniques could be used to determine whether a tailings pond might have potential pollution and safety hazards, mainly monitoring tailings ponds that may have potential hazards, it would save a lot of effort in tailings ponds monitoring. Therefore, based on this background, this paper proposes to classify tailings ponds into two categories according to whether they are potentially risky or generally safe and to classify tailings ponds with remote sensing satellite images of tailings ponds using the DDN + ResNet-50 machine learning model based on ML.Net developed by Microsoft. In the discussion section, the paper introduces the environmental hazards of mine pollution and proposes the concept of "Healthy Mine" to provide development directions for mining companies and solutions to mine pollution and public health crises. Finally, we claim this paper serves as a guide to begin a conversation and to encourage experts, researchers and scholars to engage in the research field of mine solid waste pollution monitoring, assessment and treatment. Demand for food and water are increasing while the extent of arable land and accessible fresh water are decreasing. This poses global challenges as economies continue to develop and the population grows. With agriculture as the leading consumer of water, better understanding how water is used to produce food may help support the increase of Crop Water Productivity (CWP; kg/m3), the ratio of crop output per unit of water input (or crop per drop). Previous large-scale CWP studies have been useful for broad water use modeling at coarser resolutions. However, obtaining more precise CWP, especially for specific crop types in a particular area and growing season as outlined here are important for informing farm-scale water management decision making. Therefore, this study focused on California's Central Valley utilizing high-spatial resolution satellite imagery of 30 m (0.09 hectares per pixel) to generate more precise CWP for commonly grown and water-intensive irrigated crops. First, two products were modeled and mapped. 1. Landsat based Actual Evapotranspiration (ETa; mm/d) to determine Crop Water Use (CWU; m3/m2), and 2. Crop Productivity (CP; kg/m2) to estimate crop yield per growing season. Then, CWP was calculated by dividing CP by CWU and mapped. The amount of water that can be saved by increasing CWP of each crop was further calculated. For example, in the 434 million m2 study area, a 10% increase in CWP across the 9 crops analyzed had a potential water savings of 31.5 million m3 of water. An increase in CWP is widely considered the best approach for saving maximum quantities of water. This paper proposed, developed, and implemented a workflow of combined methods utilizing cloud computing based remote sensing data. The integrity of remote-sensing image data is susceptible to corruption during storage and transmission. Perceptual hashing is a non-destructive data integrity-protection technique suitable for high-accuracy requirements of remote-sensing image data. However, the existing remote-sensing image perceptual hash-authentication algorithms face security issues in storing and transmitting the original perceptual hash value. This paper proposes a remote-sensing image integrity authentication method based on blockchain and perceptual hash to address this problem. The proposed method comprises three parts: perceptual hash value generation, secure blockchain storage and transmission, and remote-sensing image integrity authentication. An NSCT-based perceptual hashing algorithm that considers the multi-band characteristics of remote-sensing images is proposed. A Perceptual Hash Secure Storage and Transmission Framework (PH-SSTF) is designed by combining Hyperledger Fabric and InterPlanetary File System (IPFS). The experimental results show that the method can effectively verify remote-sensing image integrity and tamper with the location. The perceptual hashing algorithm exhibits strong robustness and sensitivity. Meanwhile, the comparison results of data-tampering identification for multiple landscape types show that the algorithm has stronger stability and broader applicability compared with existing perceptual hash algorithms.
