Studies of many physical processes lead to the numerical solution of boundary-value problems for macroequations with a small parameter. Classical difference schemes poorly describe the solution of the original differential problem in boundary-layer regions, because they have an approximation viscosity comparable with the mesh size. This paper proposes difference schemes of higher order of approximation, which allow one to adequately simulate the motion of a viscous fluid in a wide range of Reynolds numbers, as well as reduce the time and amount of calculations due to the efficiency of the methods used in numerical simulation. In this paper, we present the formulation and a method for solving the problem of freezing living biological tissue with a flat circular cryoapplicator. The model is a two-dimensional boundary-value problem of Stefan type with nonlinear heat sources of a special type that provide the actually observed spatial localization of the temperature field. The paper presents numerical simulation of polycrystalline titanium deformation in terms of the crystal plasticity theory. Based on the experimental data, a three-dimensional polycrystalline model is generated by a method of step-by-step packing. Constitutive relations for the deformation behavior of grains are based on the crystal plasticity theory with regard to the crystalline structure and dislocation glide in hexagonal closepacked crystal lattices. The boundary value problem of elastoplastic deformation is solved numerically using the finite element method. The proposed model is tested by elastoplastic deformation of titanium single crystals having different orientation. In this paper we investigate the application of the localized method of fundamental solutions (LMFS) for solving three-dimensional inhomogeneous elliptic boundary value problems. A direct Chebyshev collocation scheme (CCS) is employed for the approximation of the particular solutions of the given inhomogeneous problem. The Gauss–Lobatto collocation points are used in the CCS to ensure the pseudo-spectral convergence of the method. The resulting homogeneous equations are then calculated by using the LMFS. In the framework of the LMFS, the computational domain is divided into a set of overlapping local subdomains where the traditional MFS formulation and the moving least square method are applied. The proposed CCS-LMFS produces sparse and banded stiffness matrix which makes the method possible to perform large-scale simulations on a desktop computer. Numerical examples involving Poisson, Helmholtz as well as modified-Helmholtz equations (with up to 1,000,000 unknowns) are presented to illustrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method. The immersed boundary method (IBM) is a well-suited tool for the direct numerical simulation of flows with dense particle suspensions, which feature strong and complex flow-particle and particle-particle interactions. With the aim to model such flows, this paper proposes to extend the Regularised Discrete Momentum Forcing (RDMF-) IBM of Abdol Azis et al. (2018) to immersed boundaries (IBs) whose motion is coupled to the flow. A modification to the direct-forcing formulation, resulting in an offset of the imposed no-slip boundary from a moving immersed boundary, is proposed. This offset is exploited in an iterative strong flow-particle coupling scheme, where the boundary forces are applied at the location of the IB known from the previous time level, while correctly enforcing the no-slip condition at the new location of the IB. This avoids having to reconstruct the interpolation and spreading stencils for every linear iteration of the flow-particle coupling, therefore reducing the computational load of the method. A technique to ensure the stable modelling of flows involving light particles is also presented and is shown to stably cope with a wide range of particle-fluid density ratios. The framework is validated by comparing the results of the simulation of a single sedimenting sphere with published experimental results. Simulations of the fluidisation of heavy rigid particles, as well as of the ascent of closely packed light particles, are also presented. Use of the radius retraction procedure, to compensate for the diffuse representation of the smooth-interface IBM, is demonstrated to consistently yield significant improvements for moving IB cases with low to intermediate Reynolds numbers. This paper deals with a reaction-diffusion system modeling a free boundary problem of the predator-prey type with prey-taxis over a one-dimensional habitat. The free boundary represents the spreading front of the predator species. The global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions to this system are established by the contraction mapping principle. With an eye on the biological interpretations, numerical simulations are provided which give a real insight into the behavior of the free boundary and the stability of the solutions. This paper touches upon the computer simulation of the propagation of elastic waves in three-dimensional multilayer fractured media. The dynamic processes are described using the defining system of equations in the partial derivatives of the deformed solid mechanics. The numerical solution of this system is carried out via the grid-characteristic method on curvilinear structural grids. The fractured nature of the medium is accounted for by explicitly selecting the boundaries of individual cracks and setting special boundary conditions in them. Various models of heterogeneous deformed media with a fractured structures are considered: a homogeneous medium, a medium with horizontal boundaries, a medium with inclined boundaries, and a medium curvilinear boundaries. The wave fields detected on the surface are obtained, and their structures are analyzed. It is demonstrated that it is possible to detect the waves scattered from fractured media even in the case of nonparallel (inclined and curvilinear) boundaries of geological layers. The flow field with a high order scheme is usually calculated so as to solve complex flow problems and describe the flow structure accurately. However, there are two problems, i.e., the reduced-order boundary is inevitable and the order of the scheme at the discontinuous shock wave contained in the flow field as the supersonic flow field is low. It is questionable whether the reduced-order boundary and the low-order scheme at the shock wave have an effect on the numerical solution and accuracy of the flow field inside. In this paper, according to the actual situation of the direct numerical simulation of the flow field, two model equations with the exact solutions are solved, which are steady and unsteady, respectively, to study the question with a high order scheme at the interior of the domain and the reduced-order method at the boundary and center of the domain. Comparing with the exact solutions, it is found that the effect of reduced-order exists and cannot be ignored. In addition, the other two model equations with the exact solutions, which are often used in fluid mechanics, are also studied with the same process for the reduced-order problem. In this paper, we have developed an efficient wavelet based approximation method to biofilm model under steady state arising in enzyme kinetics. Chebyshev wavelet based approximation method is successfully introduced in solving nonlinear steady state biofilm reaction model. To the best of our knowledge, until now there is no rigorous wavelet based solution has been addressed for the proposed model. Analytical solutions for substrate concentration have been derived for all values of the parameters δ and SL. The power of the manageable method is confirmed. Some numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the wavelet method. We report on the theoretical investigation of the acoustic cloaks working in complex background media in this paper. The constitutive parameters of arbitrary-shape cloaks are derived based on the transformation acoustic theory and coordinate transformation technique. The detailed analysis of boundaries conditions and potential applications of the cloaks are also presented in our work. To overcome the difficulty of achieving the materials with ideal parameters in nature, concentric alternating layered isotropic materials is adopted to approximate the required properties of the cloak. Theoretical design and excellent invisibility are demonstrated by numerical simulations. Climate simulations results can be very different when the regional climate model used is driven by different data. In this paper, the fifth generation Canadian Regional Climate Model (CRCM5) response is assessed when driven by various boundary conditions. The latter are provided by outputs from the second-generation Canadian Earth System Model (CanESM2) and the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology's Earth System Model (MPI-ESM-LR) and also from ERA-Interim reanalysis. Physical and dynamical tendencies are analysed when the regional model is well spun up and is sufficiently affected by the lateral forcing data. The results indicate that the model is very sensitive to those imposed lateral conditions. Compared to observations, the CRCM5 exhibits excessive heating in the lower levels and cooling above when driven by the three driving data. It is also found that the two global models contribute to these anomalies but with different effects. Temperature tendencies revealed a cooling in lower layers when CRCM5 is driven by CanESM2 while a heating is noted when the model is forced by MPI-ESM-LR. In this paper, a new unsteady aerodynamic design method is presented based on the Navier-Stokes equations and a continuous adjoint approach. A basic framework of time-accurate unsteady airfoil optimization which adopts time-averaged aerodynamic coefficients as objective functions is presented. The time-accurate continuous adjoint equation and its boundary conditions are derived. The flow field and the adjoint equation are simulated numerically by the finite volume method (FVM). Totally, spur dike is an economical way to preserve morphology of rivers. Numerical methods can be useful for evaluating hydraulic parameters for spur dike because of their reduced simulation time, while experimental ones take a long time and need lots of tools to simulate any models. In this paper, flow patterns around a T-shape spur dike and a support structure, which is located upstream of the T-shape spur dike, is analyzed in 90° bend channel by Flow-3D model. The numerical and laboratory data are compared in longitudinal section to verify numerical model. The results show very good correspondence between numerical and laboratory data. After verification numerical model, a support structure has been installed upstream of the T-shape spur dike with 3, 5, 7 and 9 times distance longer than the length of the T-shape spur dike. The support structure altered flow patterns and hydraulic parameters such as power of secondary flow and separation zone in all of sections. By increasing support structure distance from 3L up to 9L, the power of secondary flow around main spur dike decreases by 40-120% and the length of separation zone increases from 0.8 to 2.5 times bigger than the length of T-shape spur dike. This paper introduces a 2D lattice Boltzmann-Saltation (LBM-Saltation) model for numerical simulation of velocity profiles of windblown sand particles. The model is based on the LBM equations for transient, incompressible viscous flow. We first introduced a lattice Boltzmann subgrid model, which was used to predict the turbulent wind field. Two-way coupling was then used to describe the interaction between wind and the saltating sand particles. The correctness of the model was verified by comparing the simulated results of several important variables of wind-sand flow with that of experiment over a flat bed surface. To show the feasibility of this model with complex boundary conditions, we used it to simulate the wind-sand flow at porous wind fences and mainly discussed the particle velocity profiles. Single porous wind fence case was computed first and compared with the measurement. Two tandem porous wind fences cases were simulated next. Different distance and porosity of the fences were considered to quantitatively investigate the variation of the shelter effect. The simulated results achieved additional conclusions: The wind speed and the velocity of sand particles are obviously weakened because of the fence; reduction of the particle velocity by porous fence varies with the fence distance and porosity; the larger the distance or the porosity (significantly larger than the 0.3), the worse the shelter effect, and the weaker the reduction of particle velocity. In this paper, an actual landslide process that occurred in Southern China is simulated by a continuum approach, the particle finite element method (PFEM). The PFEM attempts to solve the boundary-value problems in the framework of solid mechanics, satisfying the governing equations including momentum conservation, displacement-strain relation, constitutive relation as well as the frictional contact between the sliding mass and the slip surface. To warrant the convergence behaviour of solutions, the problem is formulated as a mathematical programming problem, while the particle finite element procedure is employed to tackle the issues of mesh distortion and free-surface evolution. The whole procedure of the landslide, from initiation, sliding to deposition, is successfully reproduced by the continuum approach. It is shown that the density of the mass has little influence on the sliding process in the current landslide, whereas both the geometry and the roughness of the slip surface play important roles. In this paper, numerical treatment is presented for the solution of boundary value problems of one-dimensional Bratu-type equations using artificial neural networks. Three types of transfer functions including Log-sigmoid, radial basis, and tan-sigmoid are used in the neural networks' modeling. The optimum weights for all the three networks are searched with the interior point method. Various test cases of Bratu-type equations have been simulated using the developed models. In this paper, a stochastic technique is developed to solve 2-dimensional Bratu equations using feed-forward artificial neural networks, optimized with genetic and interior-point algorithms. The 2-dimensional equations are first transformed into a 1-dimensional boundary value problem, and a mathematical model of the transformed equation is then formulated with neural networks using an unsupervised error. Network weights are optimized to minimize the error. Evolutionary computing based on genetic algorithms is used as a tool for global search, integrated with an interior-point method for rapid local convergence. The methodology is applied to solve three cases of boundary value problems for the Bratu equations. The accuracy, convergence and effectiveness of the scheme is validated for a large number of simulations. Many atomistic-continuum coupling techniques employ an overlapping subdomain to suppress spurious wave reflections. In this paper, we propose the imposition of a new damping condition on the overlapping subdomain to enhance the capability of such methods in eliminating spurious wave reflections. In this technique, the total displacements of the atoms in the overlapping subdomain are decomposed into fine and coarse scales. The fine scale displacements represent the oscillations which cannot be resolved by the continuum mesh and must be eliminated to avoid the artificial reflections. This is achieved by modifying the equations of motion of the fine scale displacements to include a damping term. The flexibility of the proposed technique is verified by applying it to the bridging scale method and bridging domain method. Numerical simulations of one- and two-dimensional problems demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique in enhancing the elimination of the spurious wave reflections in coupled atomistic-continuum techniques. This paper presents a hybrid model for opinion formation in a large group of agents exposed to the persuasive action of a small number of strong opinion leaders. The model is defined by coupling a finite difference equation for the dynamics of leaders opinion with a continuous integro-differential equation for the dynamics of the others. Such a definition stems from the idea that the leaders are few and tend to retain original opinions, so that their dynamics occur on a longer time scale with respect to the one of the other agents. A general well-posedness result is established for the initial value problem linked to the model. The asymptotic behavior in time of the related solution is characterized for some general parameter settings, which mimic distinct social scenarios, where different emerging behaviors can be observed. Viscous boundaries are widely used in numerical simulations of wave propagation problems in rock mechanics and rock engineering. By using such boundaries, reflected waves from artificial boundaries can be eliminated; therefore, an infinite domain can be modeled as a finite domain more effectively and with a much greater accuracy. Little progress has been made, thus far, with the implementation and verification of a viscous boundary in the numerical, discrete element, discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) method. We present in this paper a new viscous boundary condition for DDA with a higher absorbing efficiency in comparison to previously published solutions. The theoretical derivation of the new viscous boundary condition for DDA is presented in detail, starting from first principles. The accuracy of the new boundary condition is verified using a series of numerical benchmark tests. We show that the new viscous boundary condition works well with both P waves as well as S waves. In this paper, we first briefly review the history of air-sea coupled models, and then introduce the current status and recent advances of regional air-sea coupled models. In particular, we discuss the core technical and scientific issues involved in the development of regional coupled models, including the coupling technique, lateral boundary conditions, the coupling with sea waves (ices), and data assimilation. Furthermore, we introduce the application of regional coupled models in numerical simulation and dynamical downscaling. In this paper, we present a physically based technique for simulating inviscid fluids. Our contribution is concerned with two issues. First, for solving the advection equation, we introduce a hybrid scheme that couples the FLIP scheme with the semi-Lagrangian scheme by adaptively distributing implicit particles and using a transition layer to propagate information. Secondly, for solving pressure, we develop a flux based scheme that can embed arbitrary solid boundaries into a Poisson equation. And based on this scheme we make further improvement to achieve two-way fluid/solid coupling on an octree structure with second-order accuracy. Finally, the experimental results demonstrate that our hybrid scheme for advection can preserve relatively fine surface details with less computation expenditure; and simultaneously our robust pressure solver can handle both stationary and moving obstacles more efficiently compared with unstructured meshes. For the coupled system with moving boundary values of multilayer dynamics of fluids in porous media, a characteristic finite difference fractional step scheme applicable to the parallel arithmetic is put forward. Some techniques, such as the change of regions, the calculus of variations, the piecewise threefold quadratic interpolation, the multiplicative commutation rule of difference operators, the decomposition of high order difference operators, and the prior estimates, are adopted. The optimal order estimates in the l norm are derived to determine the error in the approximate solution. This numerical method has been successfully used to simulate the flow of migration-accumulation of the multilayer percolation coupled system. In this paper, firstly, the acceleration of the temperature and concentration are assumed to need the extra increment of the heat and energy. The inertial entropy and the inertial chemical potential were proposed by Kuang (Acta Mech 203:1-11, , Acta Mech 214:275-289, ). Secondly, the expressions of dissipative energy produced by the variation of the temperature and concentration are derived by using the second law of thermodynamics. Finally, several variational principles for coupled temperature-diffusion-mechanics are established, and their corresponding governing equations and boundary conditions are naturally presented. We investigate the layer undulations that appear in smectic A liquid crystals when a magnetic field is applied in the direction parallel to the smectic layers. In an earlier work (G arcía-C ervera and J oo in J Comput Theor Nanosci 7:795-801, ) the authors characterized the critical field using the Landau-de Gennes model for smectic A liquid crystals. In this paper, we obtain an asymptotic expression of the unstable modes using Γ-convergence theory, and a sharp estimate of the critical field. Under the assumption that the layers are fixed at the boundaries, the maximum layer undulation occurs in the middle of the cell and the displacement amplitude decreases near the boundaries. Our estimate of the critical field is consistent with the Helfrich-Hurault theory. When natural boundary conditions are considered, the displacement amplitude does not diminish near the boundary, in sharp contrast with the Dirichlet case, and the critical field is reduced compared to the one calculated in the classical theory. This is consistent with the experiments carried out by I shikawa and L avrentovich (Phys Rev E 63:030501(R), ). Furthermore, we prove the existence and stability of the solution to the nonlinear system of the Landau-de Gennes model using bifurcation theory. This paper deals with a diffusive logistic equation on one dimensional isotropically growing domain. The model equation on growing domains is first presented, and the comparison principle is then proved. The asymptotic behavior of temporal solutions to the reaction-diffusion problem is given by constructing upper and lower solutions. Our result shows that when the domain grows slowly, the species successfully spreads to the whole habitat and stabilizes at a positive steady state, while it dies out in the long run if the domain grows fast. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelers require high-quality experimental data sets for validation of their numerical tools. Preferred features for numerical simulations of a sooting, turbulent test case flame are simplicity (no pilot flame), well-defined boundary conditions, and sufficient soot production. This paper proposes a non-premixed CH/air turbulent jet flame to fill this role and presents an extensive database for soot model validation. The sooting turbulent jet flame has a total visible flame length of approximately 400 mm and a fuel-jet Reynolds number of 10,000. The flame has a measured lift-off height of 26 mm which acts as a sensitive marker for CFD model validation, while this novel compiled experimental database of soot properties, temperature and velocity maps are useful for the validation of kinetic soot models and numerical flame simulations. Due to the relatively simple burner design which produces a flame with sufficient soot concentration while meeting modelers' needs with respect to boundary conditions and flame specifications as well as the present lack of a sooting 'standard flame', this flame is suggested as a new reference turbulent sooting flame. The flame characterization presented here involved a variety of optical diagnostics including quantitative 2D laser-induced incandescence (2D-LII), shifted-vibrational coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (SV-CARS), and particle image velocimetry (PIV). Producing an accurate and comprehensive characterization of a transient sooting flame was challenging and required optimization of these diagnostics. In this respect, we present the first simultaneous, instantaneous PIV, and LII measurements in a heavily sooting flame environment. Simultaneous soot and flow field measurements can provide new insights into the interaction between a turbulent vortex and flame chemistry, especially since soot structures in turbulent flames are known to be small and often treated in a statistical manner. Our motivation is a mathematical model describing the spatial propagation of an epidemic disease through a population. In this model, the pathogen diversity is structured into two clusters and then the population is divided into eight classes which permits to distinguish between the infected/uninfected population with respect to clusters. In this paper, we prove the weak and the global existence results of the solutions for the considered reaction-diffusion system with Neumann boundary. This paper is concerned with a two-species predator-prey reaction-diffusion system with Beddington-DeAngelis functional response and subject to homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. By linearizing the system at the positive constant steady-state solution and analyzing the associated characteristic equation in detail, the asymptotic stability of the positive constant steady-state solution and the existence of local Hopf bifurcations are investigated. Also, it is shown that the appearance of the diffusion and homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions can lead to the appearance of codimension two Bagdanov-Takens bifurcation. Moreover, by applying the normal form theory and the center manifold reduction for partial differential equations (PDEs), the explicit algorithm determining the direction of Hopf bifurcations and the stability of bifurcating periodic solutions is given. Abstract  The idea of transforming the geodetic boundary value problem into a boundary value problem with a fixed boundary dates back to the 1970s of the last century. This transformation was found by F. Sanso and was named as gravity-space transformation. Unfortunately, the advantage of having a fixed boundary for the transformed problem was counterbalanced by the theoretical as well as practical disadvantage of a singularity at the origin. In the present paper two more versions of a gravity-space transformation are investigated, where none of them has a singularity. In both cases the transformed differential equations are nonlinear. Therefore, a special emphasis is laid on the linearized problems and their relationships to the simple Hotine-problem and to the symmetries between both formulations. This paper introduces a new spontaneous potential log model for the case in which formation resistivity is not piecewise constant. The spontaneous potential satisfies an elliptic boundary value problem with jump conditions on the interfaces. It has been shown that the elliptic interface problem has a unique weak solution. Furthermore, a jump condition capturing finite difference scheme is proposed and applied to solve such elliptic problems. Numerical results show validity and effectiveness of the proposed method. This paper is concerned with an initial boundary value problem for strictly convex conservation laws whose weak entropy solution is in the piecewise smooth solution class consisting of finitely many discontinuities. By the structure of the weak entropy solution of the corresponding initial value problem and the boundary entropy condition developed by Bardos–Leroux–Nedelec, we give a construction method to the weak entropy solution of the initial boundary value problem. Compared with the initial value problem, the weak entropy solution of the initial boundary value problem includes the following new interaction type: an expansion wave collides with the boundary and the boundary reflects a new shock wave which is tangent to the boundary. According to the structure and some global estimates of the weak entropy solution, we derive the global L 1–error estimate for viscous methods to this initial boundary value problem by using the matching travelling wave solutions method. In this paper, we propose a lattice Boltzmann BGK model for simulation of micro flows with heat transfer based on kinetic theory and the thermal lattice Boltzmann method (He et al., J. Comp. Phys. 146:282, 1998). The relaxation times are redefined in terms of the Knudsen number and a diffuse scattering boundary condition (DSBC) is adopted to consider the velocity slip and temperature jump at wall boundaries. This paper presents computer simulation of the forging process using the finite volume method (FVM). The process of forging is highly non-linear, where both large deformations and continuously changing boundary conditions occur. In most practical cases, the initial billet shape is relatively simple, but the final shape of the end product is often geometrically complex, to the extent that it is commonly obtained using multiple forming stages. Examples of the numerical simulation of the forged pieces provided were created using Msc/SuperForge computer code.
