Climate change and the resulting higher frequency of extreme weather events have a direct negative impact on mental health. Natural disasters are particularly associated with an increase in the prevalence of depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder. Indirect consequences of climate change, such as food shortages, economic crises, violent conflicts and forced migration, additionally represent severe psychological risk and stress factors. Climate anxiety and solastalgia, the distress induced by environmental change, are new psychological syndromes in the face of the existential threat posed by the climate crisis. Accordingly, a sustainable psychiatry must prepare for increasing and changing demands. The principles of psychiatric treatment need to focus more on prevention to reduce the overall burden on the healthcare system. Waste of resources and CO2 emissions in psychiatric treatment processes as well as infrastructure must be perceived and prevented. Psychiatric education, training and continuing education concepts should be expanded to include the topic of climate change in order to comprehensively inform and sensitize professionals, those affected and the public and to encourage climate-friendly and health-promoting behavior. More in-depth research is needed on the impact of climate change on mental health. The diagnosis of dengue infection is still a critical factor determining success in the clinical management and treatment of patients. Here, the development of microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) utilizing a sandwich immunoassay on wax patterned paper functionalized with anti-dengue NS1 monoclonal antibodies for point-of-care detection of dengue NS1 (DEN-NS1-PAD) is reported. Various assay conditions, including the length of the channel and diluent, were optimized, and the response detected by the naked eye and digitized images within 20–30 min. The DEN-NS1-PAD was successfully tested in the field for detecting dengue NS1 in buffer, cell culture media, and human serum. The limit of detection (LoD) of the DEN-NS1-PAD obtained with the naked eye, scanner, and a smartphone camera was 200, 46.7, and 74.8 ng mL−1, respectively. The repeatability, reproducibility, and stability of the DEN-NS1-PAD were also evaluated. High true specificity and sensitivity in the serum of pediatric patients were observed. These evaluation results confirm that the DEN-NS1-PAD can potentially be used in point-of-care dengue diagnostics, which can significantly impact on the spreading of mosquito-borne diseases, which are likely to become more prevalent with the effects of global warming. The atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration has been increasing rapidly since the Industrial Revolution, which has led to unequivocal global warming and crucial environmental change. It is extremely important to investigate the interactions among atmospheric CO2, the physical climate system, and the carbon cycle of the underlying surface for a better understanding of the Earth system. Earth system models are widely used to investigate these interactions via coupled carbon-climate simulations. The Chinese Academy of Sciences Earth System Model version 2 (CAS-ESM2.0) has successfully fixed a two-way coupling of atmospheric CO2 with the climate and carbon cycle on land and in the ocean. Using CAS-ESM2.0, we conducted a coupled carbon-climate simulation by following the CMIP6 proposal of a historical emissions-driven experiment. This paper examines the modeled CO2 by comparison with observed CO2 at the sites of Mauna Loa and Barrow, and the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) CO2 product. The results showed that CAS-ESM2.0 agrees very well with observations in reproducing the increasing trend of annual CO2 during the period 1850–2014, and in capturing the seasonal cycle of CO2 at the two baseline sites, as well as over northern high latitudes. These agreements illustrate a good ability of CAS-ESM2.0 in simulating carbon-climate interactions, even though uncertainties remain in the processes involved. This paper discusses the radiation budget and its temporal variability over Poland. The data analysis is based on the MERRA-2 reanalysis for the years 1980–2020. During the last four decades, the enhancement of climate warming has been observed, which coincides with the changes in the radiation budget. Positive and statistically significant trends at the top of the atmosphere (TOA; 0.7 ± 0.2 W/m2/10 year) and on the Earth's surface (1.5 ± 0.2 W/m2/10 year) radiation budget (net downward flux) are mainly a consequence of changes in the amount of aerosol and greenhouse gases (GHG). According to MERRA-2, the AOD during this period decreased by − 0.19 (at 550 nm), which is 87% of the long-term (1980–2021) mean value (0.22). The reduction of AOD is due mainly to the decline of non-absorbing sulfate particles, which leads to a reduction of single-scattering albedo (SSA) by − 0.008 per decade and Angstrom exponent (AE) by − 0.06 per decade (both trends statistically significant). On the other hand, the GHG concentration increased by 4.9%/10 year and 3%/10 year, respectively, for CO2 and CH4. The total column of water vapor increased (1.3%/10 year), while ozone decreased (− 1%/10 year). Despite the fact that cloud cover and cloud optical depth (COD) decreased (− 1.8%/10 year and − 1.0%/10 year), the impact of cloud on temporal variability radiation budget is small. It can be explained by nearly compensated shortwave (SW) cooling and longwave (LW) heating effects. During the analysis period, near-surface air temperature increased by 2.0 °C. The estimated increase in SW net surface radiation (7.9 W/m2) leads to climate warming by 0.8 °C, which is a consequence mainly of the reduction of aerosol (0.4 °C) and cloud cover (0.2 °C). The impact of the change of SW radiation on air temperature is more pronounced during the warm season, while during the cold, air temperature change is controlled mainly by the variability of air mass advection. In recent decades, the atmospheric moisture capacity has increased globally in concert with global warming, with a particularly notable warming trend in Arctic regions. However, due to limited observational data, the variation and causes of polar precipitation, especially large-scale precipitation events associated with Arctic cyclones, remain unclear. In this paper, GPM satellite data are compared with ERA5 reanalysis data to explore the characteristics of summer precipitation at the northern margin of the Eurasian region (NMER) and the influence of cyclone activity on precipitation. It is revealed that high precipitation values in the Arctic region, as indicated by the GPM and ERA5 data, are mainly concentrated at the NMER. However, the GPM data show an overall larger precipitation amount, while the station observations more closely agree with the ERA5 precipitation changes at the NMER. The cyclone identification results indicate that summer cyclones at the NMER are mainly distributed in the Barents, Kara and Laptev Seas, and the precipitation contribution rate of ERA5-derived cyclones is 37.35%, which is significantly higher than that of GPM-derived cyclones (29.47%). Furthermore, high cyclone activity results in more intense precipitation, with the top 5% of the strongest cyclones contributing 60% (GPM) and 40% (ERA5) to the total cyclonic precipitation. The spatial clustering of life satisfaction scores noted in recent empirical research suggests that 'happier' people may live in specific neighbourhoods or regions. This prompts the questions: Do 'happier' people choose to move to specific places? Does living in specific places make people 'happier'? To answer these questions, this paper explores possible occurrences of selective mobility, and social and ecological influence. Using panel data collected in Australia from 2013 to 2021, we examine the association between life satisfaction scores and selective geographic mobility, and the possible influence that living at specific locations may have on individual life satisfaction trajectory, while controlling for individual personality traits and socio-demographic factors. Our results indicate that urban residents reporting lower life satisfaction scores before the move have a higher probability of moving to a rural area. Similarly, lower life satisfaction scores are associated with a higher probability of moving to a region with a different climate. We also find evidence that moving from the city to the country is associated with an uplift of the life satisfaction trajectory for the individual. A similar conclusion is reached for people who moved to a warmer climate, but not for a move to a cooler climate. To our knowledge, this is the first time the concepts of selective mobility and social and ecological influence have been applied in life satisfaction research. Our work provides an indicator that can be important to demographers predicting population movements. AI chatbots such as ChatGPT help people produce texts. According to media reporting, these texts are also used for educational purposes. Thus, AI influences people's knowledge and perception of current issues. This paper examines the narrative of ChatGPT's stories on climate change. Our explorative analysis reveals that ChatGPT's stories on climate change show a relatively uniform structure and similar content. Generally, the narrative is in line with scientific knowledge on climate change; the stories convey no significant misinformation. However, specific topics in current debates on global warming are conspicuously missing. According to the ChatGPT narrative, humans as a species are responsible for climate change and specific economic activities or actors associated with carbon emissions play no role. Analogously, the social structuration of vulnerability to climate impacts and issues of climate justice are hardly addressed. Biodiversity reserves are a crucial in-situ method to conserve biodiversity hotspots as they are sensitive to climate change. The Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve (NDBR) in the western Himalayas is enriched with diverse endemic flora and fauna and endorses the second-highest mountain peak in the world. However, in the recent decade, this region has potentially warmed at an alarming rate. With 36 temperature and precipitation indices from high-resolution 40-year data from ERA5 reanalysis and CHIRPS, this paper assesses the state of warming and extreme climatic events. Apart from the indices, Landsat (NASA/USGS, USA) and QuickSCAT (ISRO, India) were utilized to assess the region's response to climate change. An increase of 0.73ºC in the last decade for minimum, 0.26°C for maximum temperatures was observed, with the highest anomaly of 1.7°C in 2016. The reserve's vegetation pattern has changed with the vegetative region's dispersal towards the north and higher elevations. In the year 2000, the area without any vegetation covered 79% of the total area, which declined to a mere 23.8% in the year 2020, equivalent to a 70% decline in the area. Similarly, the area with very dense region covered only 0.02% of the total area in the year 2000, and in the year 2020, it increased to 109%. Snow cover seems to be worst affected in the region with dense snow cover declining maximum by 2020. From coverage of 12.3% of the total area of the reserves, it was reduced to a mere 0.02%, showing a decline of nearly 100% in the region. Our findings show that although protected areas are meant to be resilient to external anthropogenic intrusions, they are highly susceptible to the intrinsic forces of induced climate change. We suggest that reserve managers enable robust measures to identify the distribution of vulnerable species and introduce new methods to preserve the pristine hotspot region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The STatistical Analogue Resampling Scheme (STARS) statistical approach was recently used to project changes of climate variables in Germany corresponding to a supposed degree of warming. We show by theoretical and empirical analysis that STARS simply transforms interannual gradients between warmer and cooler seasons into climate trends. According to STARS projections, summers in Germany will inevitably become dryer and winters wetter under global warming. Due to the dominance of negative interannual correlations between precipitation and temperature during the year, STARS has a tendency to generate a net annual decrease in precipitation under mean German conditions. Furthermore, according to STARS, the annual level of global radiation would increase in Germany. STARS can be still used, e.g., for generating scenarios in vulnerability and uncertainty studies. In recent years, under the influence of changes in natural conditions and human social activities, the issue of global warming has become increasingly prominent. So it is crucial to effectively predict the future trend of temperature changes. In this regard, from the perspective of statistical models, this paper studies a new combination model, namely the new GM-ARIMA model, based on linear combination of weight calculation. Furthermore, it also analyzes the prediction effect through comparative experiments and uses multiple performance evaluation indicators, so as to prove the scientificity and effectiveness of the proposed combination model in this paper. Finally, according to the experimental results, it can be clearly found that among the four methods for calculating the weights of linear combination, namely the equal weight method, the variance reciprocal method, the residual reciprocal method and the standard deviation method, the combination model using the standard deviation method for calculation has the highest prediction accuracy, so it is finally decided to use this method to build the combination model (namely S-GM-ARIMA). In addition, the experimental results show that the S-GM-ARIMA model achieves the best prediction results compared to other existing prediction models. Among them, the MAE of S-GM-ARIMA decreases by 10.38% and 16.22% compared to the GM(1,1) model and ARIMA model, respectively. The RMSE of S-GM-ARIMA decreases by 4.52% and 10.03% compared to the GM(1,1) model and ARIMA model, respectively. And the MAPE of S-GM-ARIMA decreases by 10.34% and 16.17% compared to the GM(1,1) model and ARIMA model, respectively. Therefore, the new GM-ARIMA combination model studied in this paper has relatively higher prediction accuracy when making predictions, and can be used to make more effective and accurate predictions of global average temperature. Climatic and geographic factors characterizing local conditions, as well as the ecological state of the external environment, have a direct effect on human health, morbidity, and life expectancy. The paper considers the basic concepts of medical ecology, a pathogenetic role of environmental atmospheric pollution in the development of environmentally induced and environmentally dependent diseases associated with exposure to meteorological factors. In addition to the major hygienic risk factors affecting the public health (a level of air, water, and soil pollution), the levels of acoustic and electromagnetic background, the type of human nutrition, architectural and planning conditions of human life are of significant importance. Global climate warming causes numerous environmental changes, primarily an increase in surface air temperature, which in turn entails global changes in weather conditions that lead to various weather anomalies. Human health is directly dependent on environmental conditions and a degree of adaptation to them. The paper highlights the issues of diagnosing environmentally induced diseases and measures to counteract their spread. Based on the system diagnosis using physiological indicators of human health and the integration of the adaptation and nosological approaches, a hardware-software complex has been developed and introduced into medical practice. Corrective technologies of regenerative medicine that are used for ecologically dependent pathologies are described. During extreme heat events (EHEs) the public often learns about health protective actions through the media. Visual news coverage can act as a powerful tool to help convey complex health protective actions to the public. Despite the importance of images in helping the public understand the risk, there has been no systematic analysis to assess what images have been used by media outlets in Canada during EHEs. This paper helps to fill that gap by analyzing how the Canadian media visually communicated the risks of extreme heat to the public during the unprecedented 2021 Heat Dome. A review of thousands of online news media articles published about the 2021 Heat Dome in Canada was conducted on five subscription news databases. Overall, 845 images were coded to identify denotative, connotative, and ideological content. Only 16% of these published images implied that heat was dangerous, of which only 40% depicted people, and 46% implied human suffering. Our findings demonstrate that the majority of images used in Canadian news coverage on the 2021 Heat Dome are incompatible with, and frequently contradict, evidence-based heat protective actions. Governments, public health agencies, and other stakeholders engaged in distributing heat preparedness messaging (e.g., journalists) should prioritize improving the images of extreme heat in news coverage to align with evidence-based public health messages. With rising global temperatures due to climate change and the associated increases in the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events, prioritizing these actions is critically important to offset the threat posed to public health. In northern regions, the long-term serviceability of infrastructure founded on frozen ground is adversely affected by climate warming. Rates of change in temperature, which are not identical spatially and temporally, can remarkably dictate the magnitude and evolution of permafrost degradation. Investigating such impacts requires a non-isothermal rate-dependent geomechanical constitutive model for ice-contained geomaterials. In this paper, a critical-state thermo-elasto-viscoplastic (TEVP) constitutive model is developed for modeling time- and temperature-dependent behavior of frozen soils using the concepts of thermo-elasticity and thermo-viscoplasticity. Solid phase stress (defined as the excess of total stress over fluid pressure), in addition to the cryogenic suction, are considered as the two independent stress state variables to establish the model. In the context of global warming and intensified human activities, glacier instability in plateau regions has increased, and glacier debris flows have become active, which poses a significant threat to the lives and property of people and socioeconomic development. The mass movement process of glacier debris flows is extremely complex, so this paper uses the 2018 Sedongpu glacier debris flow event on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau as an example and applies a numerical simulation method to invert the whole process of mass movement. In view of the interaction between phases in the process of motion, we use the fluid-solid coupling method to describe the mass movement. The granular-flow model and drift-flux model are employed in FLOW3D software to study the mass movement process of glacier debris flows and explore their dynamic characteristics. The results indicate that the glacier debris flow lasted for 700 s, and the movement process was roughly divided into four stages, including initiation, scraping, surging and deposition; the depositional characteristics calculated by the fluid-solid coupling model are consistent with the actual survey results and have good reliability; strong erosion occurs during the mass movement, the clear volume amplification effect, and the first wave climbs 17.8 m across the slope. The fluid-solid coupling method can better simulate glacier debris flows in plateau regions, which is helpful for the study of the mechanism and dynamic characteristics of such disasters. Drought concepts, definition, and classification processes have been in the field of research for decades, and especially the effects of global warming and the resulting climate change have accelerated these researches. The most used procedure for drought categorization has been in the literature under the name of Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) with the recommendation of the World Meteorological Organization, and many modified versions of it have appeared in the open literature. Although conceptually the SPI is based on the probabilistic standardization index (PSI), some publications use the statistical standardization procedure (SSP) incorrectly. This paper lays out and explains the difference between the two types of standardization. In proper SPI applications, it is necessary to convert a given hydro-meteorological time series probability distribution function (PDF) to a standard (Gaussian) PDF with zero mean and unit standard deviation. SSP cannot accomplish this task, because the original PDF type remains the same after shifting and scaling applications. The comparison of PSI vs. SSP is provided along with their pros and cons. The paper analyzes the effect of ever increasing anthropogenic impacts on land waters and analyzes V.I. Vernadsky's works on natural waters and their significance for assessing modern biogeochemical processes. The paper demonstrates the scale of the influx of chemical elements and compounds into the modern biosphere as a result of the emission of greenhouse gases, nitrogen and phosphorus dissemination, acid-forming gases, and metals. Key changes in some regions and the biosphere as a whole are highlighted. The consequences of anthropogenically induced processes are illustrated by the example of a remote Arctic region, the northern Kola Peninsula in Russia: the effects of climate warming and the acidification and eutrophication of the waters and their enrichment in metals. In the wake of V.I. Vernadsky's ideas about the role of land waters in supporting the life necessities of the planet's human population, approaches to assessing water quality from the standpoint of the ecological paradigm are described. In this paper, an electric servo actuator implementation scheme with an energy recovery link is proposed to address the potential energy being wasted when a load falls. The new electric servo actuator recovers the potential energy dissipated during the load-falling progress by using an accumulator. The accumulator can also provide extra thrust when the load is lifted. Moreover, a dynamic model is established based on the theory of power bond graphs to analyze the dynamic and energy consumption characteristics of the new electric servo actuator. The simulation results show that the new electric servo actuator can significantly reduce the required motor power and effectively recover the potential energy of the load. This achievement is very significant for improving the energy efficiency of electric servo actuators and mitigating global warming. In addition, the modeling method used in this paper has important reference significance for the energy consumption analysis of other mechanical systems with complex energy domains. Calcareous algae are an important marine ecosystem that is under threat due to global warming and local stressors like oil and gas offshore. Under this condition, an important Brazilian oil and gas company started to monitor that environment. To carry out this monitoring, a deep learning classifier was proposed. However, the elaborated dataset presented noisy labels. Noisy labels mean that some dataset samples are mislabeled, and it degenerates the robustness of the model. State-of-the-art models to deal with it use small loss technique. This technique excludes from the training set noisy labels and keeps the cleans. The state-of-the-art models apply different techniques on the set of clean samples to improve their performance. We introduce in this work a novel framework to deal with noise, that can improve "small loss" models' performance, named retrieving discard samples (RDS), that under ideal conditions is equivalent to training without any noise. The main idea of this method is to retrieve the discarded samples, add a pseudo-label to the excluded samples and return them to the training stage. This paper demonstrates the adaptability of the framework RDS to other models utilizing the small loss approach. Furthermore, two novel models are proposed to effectively handle noisy labels. Results show that RDS significantly improves the accuracy of both models, achieving superior results than the state-of-the-art approaches. We also developed a deep learning model for calcareous algae environmental monitoring based in RDS approach that improved the performance of F'-Score in 4.2% when compared to standard deep learning classifiers. The paper is devoted to anthropogenic and biogeochemical processes that effect the formation of the water and bottom sediment (BS) of subarctic Imandra Lake. The data of long-term observations are presented that show changes in the chemical composition of the water during the period of maximum pollution and after the reduction in the anthropogenic load over the past 30 years. The concentrations of toxic metals in the water has decreased, but climate warming has increased the inflow of organic matter and nutrients, and this intensified the production processes. The enrichment of the water in heavy metals during the period of intense pollution resulted in the accumulation of these metals in the bottom sediments, with the highest concentrations of the metals found in the uppermost layers accumulated during the modern sedimentation period. The development of anoxic conditions in the bottom water horizons due to sedimentation and oxidation of organic matter leads to the circulation of metals and hampers their burial. Physicochemical and biogeochemical processes are considered as explaining the diffusion of metals to the surface of the bottom sediments and the accumulation of anomalously high concentrations of metals in the surface layers of BS despite the significant decrease in the concentrations of metals in water. Two algorithms have been proposed in this paper. One is another scanning t test of trend change points in regression slope coefficients in two phases, along with a coherency analysis of trend changes between two time series. It is different from the previously published scanning Fmax test of trend changes. The second is a fuzzy weighted moving average (FWMA). Then, the algorithms were applied to two series of monthly temperatures over global land and ocean surfaces for 1850–2021. The applied results show that significant changes in segment trends appeared in two gradations on the interdecadal and intradecadal scales. All subsample regression models were found to fit well with those data. Global warming started in April 1976 with a good coherency of warming trends between land and sea. The global warming "hiatus" mainly occurred in SST cooling from November 2001 to April 2008, but was not evinced over land on interdecadal scales. The "land/sea warming contrast" was detected only in their anomaly series, but disappeared in their standardized differences. Abstract—The paper presents the results of a study of spatiotemporal variability of the characteristics of the wind field in the free atmosphere of the Northern Hemisphere in the SEVIRI radiometer field of view of European geostationary meteorological satellites of the second generation Meteosat 8–Meteosat 11 in the time interval 2007–2021. It is noted that the maximum wind speeds, as well as the maximum average monthly and seasonal anomalies of the wind speed modulus, are observed over the Atlantic. A feature of the temporal variability of the area-averaged wind speed modulus is revealed, which consists in a change in the sign of the trend at the turn of 2015–2017 from positive to negative. At the same time, positive linear trends in the time intervals from 2007 to the points of a change in the sign of the trend over the Atlantic, the entire region under consideration and Eurasia, including the European territory of the Russian Federation, are significantly different from zero with a probability of more than 95% and the negative trend is significant only over the Atlantic. A high correlation was noted in the area of seasonal wind speed variations with the area of Arctic sea ice and temperature characteristics of the troposphere at levels of 500 and 200 hPa. Based on the analysis of the relationship between wind speed variability and the main climatic characteristics and large-scale atmospheric processes, a scheme is proposed for the effect of the accelerating reduction in the area of Arctic sea ice associated with global warming on wind speed in the free atmosphere. The ongoing climate changes have the greatest impact on the natural ecosystems in high-latitude areas because climate warming and ever increasing anthropogenic load associated with the development of Arctic regions contribute to degradation of frozen peatlands and an increase in the seasonal thaw depth. The research into oligotrophic peat soils (Cryic Histosols) of the northern territories in Western Siberia is relevant because their degradation enriches natural waters with organomineral substances containing a large set of chemical elements, including heavy metals, thereby enhancing the changes in the hydrogeochemical properties of natural waters of the North. The paper describes the main properties of peat sampled from different horizons of soil profiles in the key areas covering the territory of the Yamalo-Nenets autonomous okrug from north to south and from west to east. The chemical composition of soils has been analyzed at the Institute of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry (Siberian Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences) using standard methods. The concentrations of gross and mobile forms of metals (Fe, Ca, K, Na, Mg, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) have been determined using optical atomic emission spectrometry and flame atomic absorption spectrometry, respectively. A characteristic feature in the distribution of concentrations of the target chemical elements in oligotrophic peat soils in the northern part of Western Siberia is two maxima in soil profiles. The first maximum is confined to the upper horizons showing signs of degradation, while the second one is observed in the upper part of permafrost. Statistical analysis using principal component method shows that the low ash content, pH, and C/N ratio are associated with a high mobility of K, Cu, Zn, and Mg. It is essential to predict carbon prices precisely in order to reduce CO2 emissions and mitigate global warming. As a solution to the limitations of a single machine learning model that has insufficient forecasting capability in the carbon price prediction problem, a carbon price prediction model (GWO–XGBOOST–CEEMDAN) based on the combination of grey wolf optimizer (GWO), extreme gradient boosting (XGBOOST), and complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) is put forward in this paper. First, a random forest (RF) method is employed to screen the primary carbon price indicators and determine the main influencing factors. Second, the GWO–XGBOOST model is established, and the GWO algorithm is utilized to optimize the XGBOOST model parameters. Finally, the residual series of the GWO–XGBOOST model are decomposed and corrected using the CEEMDAN method to produce the GWO–XGBOOST–CEEMDAN model. Three carbon emission trading markets, Guangdong, Hubei, and Fujian, were experimentally predicted to verify the model's validity. Based on the experimental results, it has been demonstrated that the proposed hybrid model has enhanced prediction precision compared to the comparison model, providing an effective experimental method for the prediction of future carbon prices. The warming in the first half of the 20th century in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) (early 20th century warming (ETCW)) was comparable in magnitude to the current warming, but occurred at a time when the growth rate of the greenhouse gas (GG) concentration in the atmosphere was 4–5 times slower than in recent decades. The mechanisms of the early warming are still a subject of discussion. The ETCW was most pronounced in the high latitudes of the NH, and the recent reconstructions consistently indicate a significant negative anomaly of the Arctic sea ice area during early warming period linked with enhanced Atlantic water inflow to the Arctic and amplified warming in high latitudes of the NH. Assessing the contributions of internal variability and external natural and anthropogenic factors to this climatic anomaly is key for understanding historical and modern climate dynamics. This paper considers mechanisms of ETCW associated with various internal variability and external anthropogenic and natural factors. An analysis of the findings on the topic of long-term studies of climate variations in the NH during the period of instrumental observations does not allow one to attribute the ETCW to one particular mechanism of internal climate variability or external forcing of the climate. Most likely, this event was caused by a combined effect of long-term climatic fluctuations in the North Atlantic and the North Pacific with a noticeable contribution of external radiative forcing associated with a decrease in volcanic activity, changes in solar activity, and an increase in GG concentration in the atmosphere due to anthropogenic emissions. Furthermore, this climate variation in high latitudes of the NH has been enhanced by a number of positive feedbacks. An overview of existing research is given, as are the main mechanisms of internal and external climate variability in the NH in the early 20th century. Despite the fact that the internal variability of the climate system is apparently the main mechanism that explains the ETCW, the quantitative assessment of the contribution of each factor remains uncertain, since it significantly depends on the initial conditions in the models and the lack of instrumental data in the early 20th century, especially in polar latitudes. Globe's primary issue is global warming, water temperatures have accompanied it as the sea surface temperature, and it is the primary attribute to balance the energy on the earth's surface. Sea surface temperature prediction is vital to climate forecast. Downwelling currents carry some of this heat to the ocean's bottom layers, which are also heating, covering far behind the increase in sea surface temperature. In deep learning models, the correct loss function will try to reduce the error and converge fast. The proposed improved loss function correctly estimates how close the predictions made by the long short-term memory match the observed values in the training data. This research considers location-specific sea surface temperature predictions using the improved loss function in the long short-term memory neural network at six different locations around India for daily, weekly, and monthly time horizons. Most existing research concentrated on periodic forecasts, but this paper focused on daily, weekly, and monthly predictions. The improved loss function—long short-term memory, achieved 98.7% accuracy, and this improved loss function overcomes the limitations of the existing techniques and reduces the processing time to ~ 0.35 s. In this research, the sea surface temperature prediction using the improved loss function in the long short-term memory neural network gives better results than the standard prediction models and other existing techniques by considering the long-time dependencies and obtaining features from the spatial data. The paper discusses changes in the temperature and precipitation regimes against the background of ongoing climate change in arid climate. Climatic variability is considered not on the time intervals of equal duration, but during natural climatic periods of the state of the Earth's climate system: the first and second waves of global warming, the period of stabilization. Differences in the features of changes in the temperature and precipitation regimes on territories differing in a degree of climate continentality are revealed. Against the second wave of global warming, a degree of hydrometeorological risks of crop cultivation in the Saratov oblast is assessed using the probabilistic values of the hydrothermal coefficient. The paper discusses the distribution and origin of organic matter in natural waters with regard to the latitudinal geographic zoning in the European territory of Russia (ETR) and Western Siberia (WS) and demonstrates how conditions on the catchments and climate affect the content of autochthonous and allochthonous organic matter. Conditional coefficients of the ratios of these forms are calculated. The influence of the temperature factor on the content of autochthonous organic matter in the waters of the southern territories of the ETR and WS was proved by multivariate statistical methods of analysis. General trends and relations are identified in the distribution of lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates of the autochthonous and allochthonous organic compounds. The mechanism of biochemical transformation of bound carbohydrates of allochthonous organic compounds into free autochthonous ones via the microbial decomposition is demonstrated, which is more typical of waters in the southern regions of WS. We present a methodology to develop the integrated toxicity and climate change risk assessment of Europe based facilities, industries and regions. There is an increasingly important need for large scale sustainability measurement solutions for company reporting with high granularity. In this paper we measure key aspects of Sustainable Development Goals in terms of human, cancer and non-cancer toxicity, ecotoxicity together with global warming impact potentials from point source pollutant releases of more than 10,000 companies and their 33,000 facilities in Europe from 2001 to 2017, by using the European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register. For our assessment, we deploy a scientific consensus model, USEtox for characterizing human and ecotoxicological impacts of chemicals and the global warming potential values from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. We discuss water and air emissions of dozens of pollutants in urban, rural, coastal and inland areas. Companies in the electricity production sector are estimated to have the largest human toxicity impact potential (46% of total) and the largest global warming impact potential (50%), while companies in the sewerage sector have the largest ecotoxicity impact potential (50%). In the overall economy, the correlation between facilities' global warming and toxicity impact potentials is positive, however, not very strong. Therefore, we argue that carbon footprint of industrial organizations can be only used as a climate change risk indicator, but not as an overall environmental performance indicator. We confirm impact potentials of major pollutants in previous research papers (Hg accounting for 76% of the total human toxicity and Zn accounting for 68% of total ecotoxicity), although we draw the attention to the limitations of USEtox in case of metals. From 2001 to 2017 total human toxicity dropped by 28%, although the downward trend reversed in 2016. Ecotoxicity and global warming impact potentials remained unchanged in the same period. Finally, we show that the European pollutant release monitoring data quality could be further improved, as only three quarters of the toxic releases are measured in the Member States of the European Union, and a high share of toxic pollutant releases are only estimated in some countries. Of the measured or calculated toxic releases, only one third is reported according to the most robust CEN/ISO standards and about one fifth according to the least preferred other methods, like engineering judgements. Harmful heatwave events that cause serious damage to human society and natural environment have occurred with increasing frequencies worldwide. In this paper, we classify summer heatwave events in the Northern Hemisphere through a new method considering more comprehensive event characteristics of the intensity, duration, affected area and humidity amplification. Apart from low-severity events in which all event characteristics are at normal levels, there are also five main different high-severity event types in nature, including high-intensity, high-humidity-amplification, long-duration, large-area and long-duration-large-area events. Different types of high-severity events usually occur at different locations in the Northern Hemisphere. The proportion of high-severity events, which is calculated as the ratio of the high-severity event number to the total heatwave number, increased significantly after 1989, and these increases probably came mostly from large-area and long-duration-large-area events. Further model analyses using the Detection and Attribution Model Intercomparison Project and Scenario Model Intercomparison Project of CMIP6 show that greenhouse gas-related external forcing is the leading cause of the significant increases in these two types of heatwave events. Anthropogenic activities are suggested to cause more rapidly increasing occurrences of extreme heatwaves with large affected areas and heatwaves with both long durations and large affected areas. The Arctic is rapidly warming posing a significant threat to underlying permafrost. Permafrost degradation has already resulted in extensive damage to the Arctic's built infrastructure, putting communities and industries at risk. Projected climate warming will further reduce the capacity of permafrost to support infrastructure, thereby requiring a rethinking of construction and development of permafrost regions in the future. This paper focuses on three Arctic regions with a substantial presence of population and infrastructure on permafrost: USA (Alaska), Canada, and Russia. The three regions' permafrost construction practices are examined in order to identify best practices and major gaps. We identify a lack of standardized, codified construction guidelines; an absence of permafrost-geotechnical monitoring in communities; barriers to integrating climate scenarios into future planning; limited data sharing; and low numbers of permafrost professionals as major constraints limiting the region's resilience in the face of climate change. Refining building practices and standards, implementing operational permafrost monitoring systems, developing downscaled climate projections, and integrating local knowledge will minimize the impacts of permafrost degradation under rapidly warming climatic conditions. In the past, long-term recordings of solar radiation energy were not commonly conducted. However, several observations using the Arago-Davy actinometer were made in different parts of the world during the nineteenth century. In this paper, we propose a method to convert actinometric degree data into information on global solar irradiance on a horizontal surface. We utilized hourly actinometric degree data from the Montsouris Observatory in Paris recorded between 1873 and 1877. Three models were tested for estimating solar global irradiance at ground level from actinometric degrees. Despite the quality of the solar irradiance data provided by the Twentieth Century Reanalysis Project version 3 (20CRv3) was subjected to criticisms, these data are used here as a reference, taking into account the lack of similar data for the nineteenth century. One of the main challenges in this study is the fact that the solar irradiance incident on the Arago-Davy actinometer is not global solar irradiance on horizontal surface, G H , a quantity which is usually measured and recorded. To address this issue, a proxy value of G H , named G H + , is defined by using the first sub-model of the Ferrel-Pouillet model (named FP1). The analysis showed that G H + is suitable for estimating both hourly and daily averaged values of the global solar irradiance G H . However, the model FP1 requires two input parameters, namely the actinometric degree D and the bright-bulb thermometer temperature t bright - bulb , while most long-term observations on the globe have data only for D . This makes the FP1 model less useful in these cases. To address this, a method was proposed that relies only on D as an input parameter. This method provides hourly and daily averaged irradiance data that are similar to those obtained using the FP1 model with two input parameters. The accuracy of this method is expected to remain the same in colder climates but decrease in warmer climates. The proposed method also provides credible lower and upper bounds for the interval of variation of monthly averaged irradiance. The paper aims to put forward and check the hypothesis that interannual variations in the monthly means of sea ice thickness and concentration in the Kara Sea gulfs from November to March can be significantly influenced by variations in their sea levels. Some areas of the Gulf of Ob, Yenisei, Baidarata and Gydan gulfs are considered. The areas where such influence was really observed in 1993–2019 are identified. It is suggested that with further warming of the Arctic climate, the total extent of such areas will grow, and consideration of the revealed relationships will provide more precise prediction of changes in ice and navigation conditions in these gulfs. This paper presents an analysis of future precipitation patterns over the Lake Victoria Basin, East Africa, using bias-corrected CMIP6 model projections. A mean increase of about 5% in mean annual (ANN) and seasonal [March–May (MAM), June–August (JJA), and October–December (OND)] precipitation climatology is expected over the domain by mid-century (2040–2069). The changes intensify towards the end of the century (2070–2099) with an increase in mean precipitation of about 16% (ANN), 10% (MAM), and 18% (OND) expected, relative to the 1985–2014 baseline period. Additionally, the mean daily precipitation intensity (SDII), the maximum 5-day precipitation values (RX5Day), and the heavy precipitation events—represented by the width of the right tail distribution of precipitation (99p–90p)—show an increase of 16%, 29%, and 47%, respectively, by the end of the century. Climate change is a critical issue of our time, and its causes, pathways, and forecasts remain a topic of broader discussion. In this paper, we present a novel data driven pathway analysis framework to identify the key processes behind mean global temperature and sea level rise, and to forecast the magnitude of their increase from the present to 2100. Based on historical data and dynamic statistical modeling alone, we have established the causal pathways that connect increasing greenhouse gas emissions to increasing global mean temperature and sea level, with its intermediate links encompassing humidity, sea ice coverage, and glacier mass, but not for sunspot numbers. Our results indicate that if no action is taken to curb anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, the global average temperature would rise to an estimated 3.28 °C (2.46–4.10 °C) above its pre-industrial level while the global sea level would be an estimated 573 mm (474–671 mm) above its 2021 mean by 2100. However, if countries adhere to the greenhouse gas emission regulations outlined in the 2021 United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26), the rise in global temperature would lessen to an average increase of 1.88 °C (1.43–2.33 °C) above its pre-industrial level, albeit still higher than the targeted 1.5 °C, while the sea level increase would reduce to 449 mm (389–509 mm) above its 2021 mean by 2100. This paper presents a thermodynamic analysis of a novel dual-ejector transcritical CO2 refrigeration system for applications in warm climate. Dual-ejector flow-pressurization and flow-splitting for higher ambient temperature operation are implemented to improve the performance. The proposed system is compared with various previously published CO2 systems including B1 (Standard CO2 booster system), B2 (CO2 booster system with parallel compression), B3 (CO2 booster system with flooded LT evaporator), B4 (CO2 booster system with work recovery expander), B5 (CO2 booster system with parallel compression integrated with flooded LT evaporator and work recovery expander) and also with a multi-stage ejector system. The investigation is carried out at ambient temperatures ranging from 34 to 43 °C. Ambient temperature and gas-cooler pressure were found to have a significant effect on the effective flow area of the ejectors. The COP of the proposed system is found to be 32% higher than B5 and 26% higher than the multi-ejector system. Exergy analysis is also carried out to comprehend system response to various parameters including extent of flow-splitting and change in inter-cooler pressure. The ejector Ej-2 was found to have the highest contribution to irreversibility accounting for an increment of 30% with the increase in ambient temperature from 34 to 43 °C. A detailed analysis of the ejector performance is also presented. Mixing chamber diameter is found to be an important parameter affecting the energetic and exergetic performance of the ejector. An enhancement of 29.63% in pressure lift and reduction of 61.11% in the irreversibility contribution of the ejector is possible by increasing the mixing chamber diameter from 0.012 to 0.015 m. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) affects its surrounding regions through thermal and dynamic processes. Hydrological cycles in TP are experiencing dramatic changes under the warming climate. As one of the most important circulations, the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) affects precipitation changes and therefore has a major effect on TP water resources. In this paper, the widths of ISM are defined as extents perpendicular to the moisture trajectories. They were calculated using ground-based measurements and verified with reanalysis datasets. The directions of maximum summer precipitation decreases (Dirmin) were selected using the cluster proxy of directions of daily maximum winds (Wd) and the slope aspects derived from digital elevation models (DEMs) at various resolutions. The major findings were that (1) similar southwestern Dirmin were found based on the Wd and the slope aspects derived from DEMs with resolutions of 100 and 200 km; (2) Reanalysis data from China Meteorological Forcing Dataset verified that a high percentage (~ 90%) of cells showing precipitation decreases also had slope aspects (derived from 100- and 200-km resolution DEMs) in the range of 112.5°–247.5°; (3) The possible widths of ISM trajectories in TP were approximately 100–200 km. Biodegradable plastics are among the most promising materials to replace conventional petroleum-based plastics that have caused many adverse impacts on the environment, such as pollution (land, water, etc.) and global warming. Among a range of biodegradable plastics, poly lactic acid (PLA) is not only widely available but also safe to be decomposed after its usage without polluting the environment. PLA is also in parity with other conventional plastics such as PP, PET in terms of various properties suitable for industrial usage such as mechanical, physical, biocompatibility and processability. Thus, PLA has become the most used biopolymers in many industries such as agriculture, automotive and packaging by having these characteristics. Its higher demand has contributed to a stable increment in the global PLA market. In fact, over the years, the market for PLA has grown up and will keep on expanding in the future. Overall, the PLA-based bioplastic would be an excellent substitute for the existing conventional plastics in various applications, hence will serve to protect the environment not only from pollution but also work as a sustainable and economical product. This paper examines meteorological and vegetation-monitoring data collected in the Northern Caspian semidesert over a 70-year period. It is established that the average air temperature of the hydrological year has gradually increased over the monitoring period by 2.73°C (0.039°C/years). Prior to 2000, this increase in temperature was caused by warming of the cold season; after 2000, by warming of the warm season. The precipitation amount in the spring–summer period increased, mainly in 1978–1995, due to rainfalls in April–June. The humidity factor dynamics makes it possible to distinguish three periods. The first period (1951–1977) features insignificant fluctuations around the average humidity factor value (0.30). The second period (1978–1994) is characterized by abundant wetting. By contrast, the third period (1995–2020) is distinguished by severe aridity. These climatic changes have significantly transformed mechanisms responsible for the formation of snow cover, surface runoff of spring melt water, and groundwater level. Despite such fluctuations in natural conditions, the annual vegetation productivity on virgin lands remains in dynamic equilibrium changing over time in a wave-like manner; no invasions of alien species occur. By 2000, the ongoing warming of the winter months made the sustainable development of forest crops impossible. The absence of snow accumulation and surface inflow of spring melt waters deprived planted forest stands of additional wetting sources. Recurrent summer atmospheric droughts intensified their withering. The production of agricultural crops was discontinued since the mid-1990s due to annual harvest failures and the aridity of growing seasons. The climate warming observed in the last two decades contributes to the restoration of the original appearance of plain semidesert Northern Caspian landscapes (without agricultural fields and planted forest stands). Bioethanol is expected to have a major contribution to transportation fuel consumption; hence, environmental analyses are crucial tools to evaluate its environmental performances. In this paper, a life cycle assessment is carried out to study the environmental performance of a bioethanol production system from Tunisian waste dates. The life cycle foreground data were derived from process simulation, while the background data were provided by the Ecoinvent 3.3 database. The impact assessment method applied is the ReCiPe midpoint (H). Seven environmental impact categories are discussed in detail in the interpretation section: global warming, acidification, eutrophication, agricultural land occupation, water depletion, cumulative energy, and cumulative exergy demands. The results indicate that 1 MJ of bioethanol produced from waste dates generates approximately 0.07 kg CO2-eq, which appears comparable with second-generation bioethanol production. One MJ of bioethanol requires approximately 1.087 MJ-eq of primary energy consumption of which 1.065 MJ is nonrenewable. The electric power generation process is the main contributor to most of the environmental impact categories (process hot spot). Life cycle assessments conducted in the last decade on forest-derived solid biofuels contain key insights to assess the environmental impact of such fuels under different contexts. This paper reports on the results of a systematic review of 87 studies that applied life cycles assessment on five types of solid biofuels: firewood, charcoal, wood chips, briquettes, and pellets. By considering the particularities of the countries in which the studies were conducted, biomass sources, end-uses and life cycle methodological choices, and key insights were derived about the global distribution of studies and what existing works can contribute to general understanding of the sustainability of wood-based fuels. First, most life cycles assessment focus on modern solid biofuels in developed countries, only 13% were on traditional solid biofuels such as firewood and charcoal in developing countries. Secondly, there are remarkable inconsistencies across studies in how they report and define their system boundaries. Thirdly, global warming potential is the most widely applied impact category. A meta-analysis of a subset of the studies (N = 26) revealed that, in general, forest-derived solid biofuels have lower global warming potential than fossil-based alternatives. Given the global imbalance of life cycle assessment efforts on forest-derived solid biofuels, there is need to mobilize capacities in order to increase applications in developing nations. However, persistent low uptake of standardized application and reporting in life cycle assessment studies perpetuates oft-mentioned limitations for cross-study comparisons. Paleontological studies of the distant past and historical chronicles of the last millennia indicate that warming and cooling of the climate on our planet, replacing each other, have taken place in a continuous series. An important role in this process has been and is played by cosmic factors: variations in solar activity and parameters of the Earth's orbital motion in the gravitational field of the Sun and the planets of the Solar System. It is suggested that the currently observed climate change is associated with a decrease in the eccentricity of the Earth's orbit and the inclination of the axis of its rotation relative to the plane of the ecliptic, which has been going on for almost 30 thousand years. Both processes lead to changes in the boundaries of climatic zones. In the foreseeable future, these processes will proceed in the same direction. Therefore, the current trend towards climate change will continue. Despite the importance of addressing the problem of reducing greenhouse-gas emissions as soon as possible, this paper expresses doubts about the possibility of fending off climate warming in this way. It is proposed to focus on the development of mathematical climate models taking into account space factors and on finding the best ways to adapt industry, transport systems, and the environment to the conditions of expected climate change. A destructive earthquake, especially if it occurs in areas of high seismic risk, in the form of certain factors, has a significant impact on the environment, including biodiversity. These factors (earthquake effects) are determined by the strength of the earthquake (manifestations of intensity on the earth's surface), local conditions (geomorphological, geological structure, level of urbanization and seismic risk, etc.), disaster-zone recovery processes (fast and effective recovery, localization and prevention of secondary consequences, environmental protection, state opportunities and political decisions, etc.). It is clear that these three important basic conditions of effects are different in different seismic regions and countries, which means that the impact of an earthquake on the environment is different. To consider the features and factors of the impact of an earthquake on the environment, the 1988 Spitak earthquake—one of the most detailed and comprehensively studied earthquakes in the world—was taken as a test object. The main purpose of this article is to highlight in more detail and more fully the possible natural and human factors of the impact of a strong earthquake on the environment and predict the extent of these impacts. Thirty-six major earthquake factors affecting the environment have been identified, which are conditionally divided into three main groups according to the time of formation and genesis: (a) purely seismic, (b) secondary seismic, and (c) post seismic. This is an extended editors’ commentary on the topical collection “Historical and recent change in extreme climate over East Asia”, which collects a total of 15 papers related to the change and variability of extreme climate events in East Asia over the last few hundreds years. The extreme climate events are broadly classified into three categories: temperature and extreme warmth/coldness, precipitation and floods/droughts and western North Pacific typhoons. This commentary briefly summarizes the main findings presented in each paper in this topical collection, and outlines the implications of these findings for monitoring, detecting and modeling of regional climate change and for studying climate change impacts and adaptability. It also assesses the uncertainties of these studies, as well as the remaining knowledge gaps that should be filled in the future. One solid conclusion we can draw from these studies is that there was a marked decadal to multi-decadal variability of extreme climate events in East Asia in recent history, and the extreme events as observed during the last decades of the instrumental era were still within the range of natural variability except for some of those related to temperature. More severe and enduring droughts occurred in the early 20 th century or the earlier periods of history, frequently leading to great famines in northern China. Uncertainties remain in reconstructing historical extreme climate events and analyzing the early instrumental records. Further research could focus on the improvement of methodology in proxy based reconstruction of multi-decadal variations of surface air temperature and precipitation/drought, the recovery, digitization, calibration and verification of the early instrumental records, and the mechanisms of the observed multi-decadal variability of extreme climate in the region. Utilizing solar energy to split water (photocatalytic water-splitting) is a good solution for global warming. However, it is difficult to find suitable materials for photocatalytic water-splitting. In this paper, through HSE06 and GW-BSE calculations, it is found that vdWHs with Se facing g-GeC (WSSe/g-GeC vdWHs) are an ideal photocatalytic material. The WSSe/g-GeC vdWHs can form a II-type band alignment, and the band gap exceeds the free energy of water splitting. The built-in electric field from Janus WSSe and vdWHs can effectively separate photo-generated electron–hole pairs and improve carrier lifetime. Compared with single-layer WSSe, WSSe/g-GeC vdWHs exhibit smaller exciton binding energy, especially for the WSSe/g-GeC vdWH I stacking (0.32 eV). Furthermore, WSSe/g-GeC vdWHs are of high absorption coefficient in the visible light regions, showing significant advantages of using solar energy. Regional climate projections indicate that European summer precipitation may change considerably in the future. Southern Europe can expect substantial drying while Northern Europe could actually become wetter. Model spread and internal variability in these projections are large, however, and unravelling the processes that underlie the changes is essential to get more confidence in these projections. Large-scale circulation change is one of the contributors to model spread. In this paper we quantify the role of future large-scale circulation changes to summer precipitation change, using a 16-member single-model ensemble obtained with the regional climate model RACMO2, forced by the global climate model EC-Earth2.3 and the RCP8.5 emission scenario. Using the method of circulation analogues three contributions to the future precipitation change are distinguished. The first is the precipitation change occurring without circulation change (referred to as the thermodynamic term). This contribution is characterised by a marked drying-to-wetting gradient as one moves north from the Mediterranean. The second contribution measures the effects of changes in the mean circulation. It has a very different spatial pattern and is closely related to the development of a region of high pressure (attaining its maximum west of Ireland) and the associated anti-cyclonic circulation response. For a large area east of Ireland including parts of western Europe, it is the major contributor to the overall drying signal, locally explaining more than 90% of the ensemble-mean change. In regions where the patterns overlap, the signal-to-noise ratio of the total change is either enhanced or reduced depending on their relative signs. Although the second term is expected to be particularly model dependent, the high-pressure region west of Ireland also appears in CMIP5 and CMIP6 ensemble-mean projections. The third contribution records the effects of changes in the circulation variability. This term has the smallest net contribution, but a relatively large uncertainty. The analogues are very good in partitioning the ensemble-mean precipitation change, but describe only up to 40% of the ensemble-spread. This demonstrates that other precipitation-drivers (SST, spring soil moisture etc.) will generally strongly influence trends in single climate realisations. This also re-emphasises the need for large ensembles or using alternative methods like the Pseudo Global Warming approach where signal to noise ratios are higher. Selecting the best portfolio of projects by considering several objectives, including financial, social, and environmental goals, is the main goal in sustainable project portfolio selection problems while addressing staff assignment and financing options. Issues, such as global warming or social unrests, have made the problem of sustainable project portfolio selection a vital process for many firms. In other words, the success of firms in reaching their stated goals requires a selection of the best portfolio of projects. Given the importance of this topic, this paper presents a novel mathematical modeling approach for sustainable project portfolio selection. The model regards staff assignment based on learning and forgetting effects. Moreover, financing each phase of the projects is determined while addressing the possibility of outsourcing. To make it possible to consider uncertain decision-making environments, interval type-2 fuzzy sets are used, and a new uncertain optimization process is extended. The application of the model shows that it is capable of assisting the main decision makers in finding the best portfolio of sustainable projects while performing staff assignments based on learning and forgetting effects, finding a proper outsourcing plan, and selecting the best financing option for projects under uncertainty. This special issue aims to display the breadth and depth of qualitative studies of the environment. In terms of breadth, the work here demonstrates that sociology should have a capacious definition of the environment and treat it with the same scrutiny as other folk concepts. Doing so—with the caveat that individual studies need to carefully operationalize ‘the environment’—reveals how a sociology of the environment has great deal to contribute to our understandings of community, culture, and inequality. In terms of depth, these articles develop new theoretical and empirical areas for environmental sociology, expanding the subfield internationally and bringing it up to date in terms of its relevance for understanding our current moment of pandemic, global warming, and nature fetishization. The outstanding papers collected in this special issue provide manifold lessons, connect to other sociological subfields, and, together, generate a sense of urgency for more qualitative studies of the environment.
