The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted a debate about whether marginalized communities suffered the disproportionate brunt of the pandemic's mortality. Empirical studies addressing this question typically suffer from statistical uncertainties and potential biases associated with uneven and incomplete reporting. We use geo-coded micro-level data for the entire population of Sweden to analyze how local neighborhood characteristics affect the likelihood of dying with COVID-19 at individual level, given the individual's overall risk of death. We control for several individual and regional characteristics to compare the results in specific communities to overall death patterns in Sweden during 2020. When accounting for the probability to die of any cause, we find that individuals residing in socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods were not more likely to die with COVID-19 than individuals residing elsewhere. Importantly, we do find that individuals show a generally higher probability of death in these neighborhoods. Nevertheless, ethnicity is an important explanatory factor for COVID-19 deaths for foreign-born individuals, especially from East Africa, who are more likely to pass away regardless of residential neighborhood. A dominant view in economic anthropology is that farmers must overcome decreasing marginal returns in the process of intensification. However, it is difficult to reconcile this view with the emergence of urban systems, which require substantial increases in labor productivity to support a growing non-farming population. This quandary is starkly posed by the rise of Angkor (Cambodia, 9th–fourteenth centuries CE), one of the most extensive preindustrial cities yet documented through archaeology. Here, we leverage extensive documentation of the Greater Angkor Region to illustrate how the social and spatial organization of agricultural production contributed to its food system. First, we find evidence for supra-household-level organization that generated increasing returns to farming labor. Second, we find spatial patterns which indicate that land-use choices took transportation costs to the urban core into account. These patterns suggest agricultural production at Angkor was organized in ways that are more similar to other forms of urban production than to a smallholder system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main components (Ti, V, Cr, Co, Ni, and Mo) of metallic alloys currently used in hip and knee articular prostheses have been simultaneously determined in human whole blood and urine of implanted people by a (HR)-ICP–MS method previously developed in our laboratory. The determination of those elements has been carried out in patients with knee and hip prosthesis and in a group of pre-operation patients without any metallic device in their bodies, used as controls, demonstrating the usefulness of this technique to perform multielement analysis at ppt levels in complex matrices. The concentrations of V, Cr, Co, Ni, and Mo in urine and blood of implanted people turned out to be very similar to those obtained in control patients. However, raised Ti levels could be found both in urine and blood of patients with articular prostheses made or coated with a titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A sector field high-resolution (HR)-ICP-MS and an octapole reaction system (ORS)-ICP-MS have been compared for the simultaneous determination of traces of metals (Ti, V, Cr, Co, Ni, and Mo) released from dental implants and articular prostheses in human biological fluids. Optimum sample treatments were evaluated to minimize matrix effects in urine and whole blood. Urine samples were diluted tenfold with ultrapure water, whereas whole blood samples were digested with high-purity nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide and finally diluted tenfold with ultrapure water. In both matrices, internal standardization (Ga and Y) was employed to avoid potential matrix interferences and ICP-MS signal drift. Spectral interferences arising from the plasma gases or the major components of urine and whole blood were identified by (HR)-ICP-MS at 3,000 resolving power. The capabilities of (HR)-ICP-MS and (ORS)-ICP-MS for the removal of such spectral interferences were evaluated and compared. Results indicate that polyatomic interferences, which hamper the determination of such metallic elements in these biological samples, could be overcome by using a resolving power of 3,000. Using (ORS)-ICP-MS, all those elements could be quantified except Ti and V (due to the polyatomic ions 31P16O and 35Cl16O, respectively). The accuracy of the proposed methodologies by (HR)- and (ORS)-ICP-MS was checked against two reference materials. Good agreement between the given values and the concentrations obtained for all the analytes under scrutiny was found except for Ti and V when analyzed by (ORS)-ICP-MS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Self-report measures are the most used methodologies for the evaluation of adherence to psoriasis topical treatment, although currently there is no standard questionnaire for this purpose. Objective: The present study aimed at developing a novel questionnaire (Questionnaire for Adherence to TOPical treatment [QATOP]) for the assessment of adherence to topical treatment in psoriasis. Methods: A questionnaire containing nine items organized into two parts (part 1: current patient treatment; part 2: adherence to treatment, amount used, and treatment-associated variables) was developed, supported by a systematic literature review, qualitative patient focus interviews, and expert-group input. Its content validity was determined by a pilot study of six patients. Adherence to topical treatment was then assessed in 35 patients with psoriasis, after 45 days of treatment, using the QATOP and a medication log. Associations between different items of the QATOP and the log were investigated. Results: Adherence results were 63.5 ± 29.2% for the log and 60.9 ± 24.4% for the QATOP, and were strongly correlated ( R = 0.819, p < 0.001). Distinct posologic regimens were reported by patients, which, in some cases, were not the usual doses. Patients also reported using doses of medicine on each application that were markedly lower than required. Conclusion: The QATOP is a valid and reliable self-report measure of adherence to topical treatment in patients with psoriasis. The use of this standard questionnaire could improve the methodological quality of adherence studies. Improvement of the clarity of posologic instructions is clearly urgently needed.
