Over the past 20 years, the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), and its successor mission, GRACE‐Follow On (GRACE‐FO) have made significant contributions to time‐variable gravity field modeling. A Chinese low‐low satellite‐to‐satellite tracking gravimetry mission (i.e., Chinese future gravimetry mission) has been confirmed to be selected as the polar‐orbiting satellite gravimetry mission for China, because of the capability to collect gravity data globally. However, the analysis of potential contributions to geosciences from GRACE‐FO coupling with the Chinese future gravimetry mission is still limited. This study combines GRACE‐FO and Chinese future gravimetry missions as the Dual GRACE‐like Polar satellite Constellation (DGPC). By carefully choosing the initial orbit parameters of the Chinese future gravimetry mission with the differential evolution algorithm, the DGPC is expected to mitigate the temporal aliasing effects by improving the temporal resolution of time‐variable gravity solutions (i.e., 1‐day and 3‐day solutions). Regarding the spectral‐domain evaluation, zonal, tesseral, and sectorial coefficients estimated by the DGPC show approximately 6.01%–13.42% noise reductions compared with GRACE‐FO. Regarding the spatial‐domain evaluation, the DGPC can suppress noises of about 39.44% and 31.12% in annual amplitude and long‐term trend, respectively. On this basis, this paper analyzes the effectiveness of the DGPC in potential contributions to geosciences (e.g., hydrology, glaciology, and seismology). Specifically, the DGPC can improve accuracy by about 36.96%, 25.85%, and 33.16% with respect to GRACE‐FO for signals in the subhumid basin, signals of ice‐sheet mass balance over Greenland, and coseismic displacement of the fault zone, respectively. In general, the potential capability for high‐frequency signals recovery of the DGPC would facilitate contributions of satellite gravimetry to geosciences. In this study, we introduce an optimization algorithm (i.e., differential evolution algorithm) to carefully choose the initial orbit parameters of the Chinese future gravimetry mission. The dual GRACE‐like polar satellite constellation has been demonstrated to have the potential to mitigate the temporal aliasing effects of time‐variable gravity solutions. It is found that the dual GRACE‐like polar satellite constellation can improve accuracy by about 36.96%, 25.85%, and 33.16% with respect to GRACE‐FO for signals in the subhumid basin, signals of ice‐sheet mass balance over Greenland, and coseismic displacement of the fault zone, respectively. The Green's function approach is well‐established and widely used for modeling the surface mass loading displacements. Global mean Green's functions (MGFs) are commonly applied without considering local variations of the crustal structure. Derived from the modified layered Earth structure, the local Green's functions (LGFs) are theoretically beneficial to generate more accurate deformation, since they consider interior information of the local crust. This paper analyzed the differences among MGFs from Gutenberg–Bullen A model and two sets of LGFs derived from modified PREM Earth models consolidating with two crust models TEA12 and CRUST1.0, hereafter called PREMTEA and PREMCRU, respectively. Utilizing MGFs and two sets of LGFs, we modeled the corresponding 3D atmospheric loading displacements for 984 ITRF2014 stations and compared them with the ITRF2014 residuals. The results show that LGFs from PREMTEA and PREMCRU perform well in further promoting scatter reduction for ∼72%, ∼56%, and ∼85% of stations for the Up, East and North components, respectively. The improvements for the North components are significant (up to 3.6%). In particular, stations in the east coastal areas of North America and the west edge of Greenland exhibit further promoting scatter reduction for the East components (up to ∼2.5%), while those located in west coastline of North America show better performance for the North components. Nevertheless, there are significant anomalies in northern Europe for PREMCRU, the mutation margin of which should be carefully considered when using a resolution higher than 1°. In the area around station MORP (358.31°W, 55.21°N, sited at coastline of Britain), we suggest using PREMTEA model. Numerical modeling of ice sheet motion and hence projections of global sea level rise require information about the evolving subglacial environment, which unfortunately remains largely unknown due to its difficulty of access. Here we advance such subglacial observations by reporting multi‐year observations of seismic tremor likely associated with glacier sliding at Helheim Glacier. This association is confirmed by correlation analysis between tremor power and multiple environmental forcings on different timescales. Variations of the observed tremor power indicate that different factors affect glacial sliding on different timescales. Effective pressure may control glacial sliding on long (seasonal/annual) timescales, while tidal forcing modulates the sliding rate and tremor power on short (hourly/daily) timescales. Polarization results suggest that the tremor source comes from an upstream subglacial ridge. This observation provides insights on how different factors should be included in ice sheet modeling and how their timescales of variability play an essential role. In this paper, we observe small ground motions that are generated during glacier movement at a marine‐terminating glacier in Greenland. By analyzing the energy variation of the small ground motions over multiple years as well as observing the reasons that cause the variations, we learn that subglacial water pressure may control ice flow speeds on a seasonal/annual scale, and that ocean tides can change ice flow on an hourly/daily scale. This observation provides important constraints for computer simulations of future sea level rise in terms of the impacting factors and their respective timescales. This paper summarizes the results of the first investigation into the effect of particle‐laden plumes on glacier melting using laboratory experiments. We find that the melt rate, when the ice is exposed to a particle‐laden plume, can be larger than when exposed to an equivalent plume without particles. The increased melt rate is linked to an increase in the plume velocity in response to the presence of suspended particles. Including this increased velocity in a plume model improves melt rate predictions from the "three‐equation model" by approximately 45% for the range of particle concentrations used in this study. A chain of magnetometers has been placed in Antarctica for comparisons with magnetic field measurements taken in the Northern Hemisphere. The locations were chosen to be on magnetic field lines that connect to magnetometers on the western coast of Greenland, despite the difficulty of reaching and working at such remote locations. We report on some basic comparisons of the similarities and differences in the conjugate measurements. Our results presented here confirm that the conjugate sites do have very similar (symmetric) magnetic perturbations in a handful of cases, as expected. Sign reversals are required for two components in order to obtain this agreement, which is not commonly known. More frequently, a strong Y component of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) breaks the symmetry, as well as the unequal conductivities in the opposite hemispheres, as shown in two examples. In one event the IMF Y component reversed signs twice within 2 hours, while the magnetometer chains were approaching local noon. This switch provided an opportunity to observe the effects at the conjugate locations and to measure time lags. It was found that the magnetic fields at the most poleward sites started to respond to the sudden IMF reversals 20 min after the IMF reaches the bow shock, a measure of the time it takes for the electromagnetic signal to travel to the magnetopause, and then along magnetic field lines to the polar ionospheres. An additional 9–14 min is required for the magnetic perturbations to complete their transition. In the past few years it has become possible to acquire magnetic field measurements in the southern polar region as well, as a result of the placement of a chain of magnetometer stations in a remote part of Antarctica. Each of these magnetometers were placed where the Earth's magnetic field connects to an existing magnetometer in the Northern Hemisphere, on the western coast of Greenland. The locations follow a roughly north‐south meridian in geomagnetic coordinates. These "conjugate" magnetometer chains are useful for observing the similarities and differences between the ionospheric currents flowing in opposite hemispheres as a result of the solar wind's interaction with the Earth's magnetosphere. This paper presents results showing how the inter‐hemispheric measurements are very similar in some cases, but only if the signs of two of the vector components are reversed. In other cases the magnetic fields in the two polar hemispheres are different, mainly due to the summer‐winter differences in conductivity. GRACE‐D accelerometer data show significant bias jumps since one month after the launch of the GRACE Follow‐On (GRACE‐FO) satellites in May 2018, making them inapplicable for correcting GRACE‐FO products for non‐gravitational accelerations. The GRACE‐FO Science Data System (SDS) compensated this issue by transplanting the GRACE‐C accelerometer data toward that of GRACE‐D. Recently, GRACE‐FO SDS implemented an updated transplant method, used in the latest release of GRACE‐FO data. Here, we examine the impact of updated accelerometer transplant data (ACH) on GRACE‐FO measurements at all levels: (a) Level‐1B inter‐satellite laser ranging residuals measured along satellite orbit, (b) Level‐2 time‐variable gravity solutions from all SDS centers (JPL, CSR, and GFZ), and (c) Level‐3 mascon solutions. We show that inter‐satellite laser ranging residuals are modified at low frequencies below 1 mHz, affecting the along‐orbit analysis of large‐scale time‐variable gravity signals. When mapped into monthly Level‐2 spherical harmonic coefficients of geopotential, the low‐frequency change in inter‐satellite ranging residuals leads to substantial improvement of coefficients associated with resonant orders (i.e., 15, 30, 45, etc.) and C30. We also present an improved SLR‐derived C30 which significantly improves the agreement with updated GRACE‐FO C30 at seasonal and interannual timescales. Moreover, we demonstrate the noise reduction in mass change estimates from new GRACE‐FO Level‐2 data over oceans, Greenland, and Antarctica for all SDS solutions. GRACE‐FO mascon solutions show a moderate change in the updated release. Our comprehensive analyses demonstrate high‐quality estimates of non‐gravitational accelerations by the updated transplant method, resulting in more accurate GRACE‐FO time‐variable gravity and mass change observations. Background: Research suggests that head‐mounted displays (HMD) can spark situational interest when they are used to provide science learning experiences that are not possible in traditional classroom settings. However, few studies have investigated the lasting effects of using HMDs in an authentic instructional intervention. Objectives: We investigated the effects of a one‐time experience of a virtual field trip to Greenland in a sample of 105 middle school students. Methods: Students used either a standard 2D video (video condition; N = 50) or an HMD (HMD condition; N = 55) as part of a six‐lesson educational activity on the topic of climate change. Informed by social cognitive career theory (SCCT), we investigated the effects of the different conditions (video vs. HMD) on the outcomes of self‐efficacy, outcome expectations, interest, and science intentions across three time points. Results and Conclusions: The results showed that using the HMD‐based virtual field trip, compared to the video, had a positive immediate effect on self‐efficacy and interest, and total later effects on self‐efficacy, outcome expectations, and interest an average of two and a half weeks after the virtual field trip. The results suggest that HMD‐based virtual field trips can influence self‐efficacy, outcome expectations, and interest more than a video‐based virtual field trip when measured approximately two and a half weeks after the intervention. At the Pingorsuit Glacier in North‐West Greenland, an organic‐rich deposit that had recently emerged from the retreating ice cap was discovered at an elevation of 480 m above sea level. This paper reports on macrofossil analyses of a coarse detritus gyttja and peaty soil, which occurred beneath a thin cover of till and glacifluvial deposits. The sediments contained remains of vascular plants, mosses, beetles, caddisflies, midges, bryozoans, sponges and other invertebrates. The flora includes black spruce, tree birch, boreal shrubs and wetland and aquatic taxa, which shows that mires, lakes and ponds were present in the area. We describe a new extinct waterwort species Elatine odgaardii. The fossils were deposited in a boreal environment with a mean July air temperature that was at least 9 °C higher than at present. The fossil assemblages show strong similarities with others from Greenland that have been assigned an Early Pleistocene age, and we suggest a similar age for the sediments found at the margin of the Pingorsuit Glacier. Ice cores provide detailed records of past climate change. Water stable isotopes are the most commonly used ice core climate proxy, but their quantitative interpretation remains challenging. Here, I argue that the gas age‐ice age difference (Δage) is a powerful proxy for past surface temperature. An analytical framework is derived that directly links past temperature to firn properties that can be reliably reconstructed (Δage, lock‐in depth). The framework is calibrated using both present‐day spatial patterns and last glacial maximum temperatures reconstructed via borehole thermometry. The usefulness of the method is demonstrated using three case studies from Greenland and Antarctic ice cores. The calibration suggests that several firn densification models, with the possible exception of the Herron‐Langway model, have insufficient sensitivity to accumulation rates. This low sensitivity, in combination with large amplitude temperature forcing, can explain historical difficulties of densification models in simulating ice age firn thickness in East Antarctica. Using the depth (z) and density (ϱ) frameworks, we analyze local contributions to AMOC variability in a 900‐year simulation with the AWI climate model. Both frameworks reveal a consistent interdecadal variability; however, the correlation between their maxima deteriorates on year‐to‐year scales. We demonstrate the utility of analyzing the spatial patterns of sinking and diapycnal transformations through depth levels and isopycnals. The success of this analysis relies on the spatial binning of these maps which is especially crucial for the maps of vertical velocities which appear to be too noisy in the main regions of upwelling and downwelling because of stepwise bottom topography. Furthermore, we show that the AMOC responds to fast (annual or faster) fluctuations in atmospheric forcing associated with the NAO. This response is more obvious in the ϱ than in the z framework. In contrast, the link between AMOC and deep water production south of Greenland is found for slower fluctuations and is consistent between the frameworks. Plain Language Summary: The variability and trends in Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) are some of the most important characteristics of an ocean model simulation that are relevant for climate. Usually, the AMOC is computed as a meridional transport (from bottom to top) of zonally integrated flow along constant depth levels (z‐AMOC). However, water in the ocean generally flows along the density surfaces. In low latitudes, they are nearly flat and the general picture given by z‐AMOC is highly relevant. In high latitudes, where the most important processes of dense water formation and sinking take place, density surfaces are sloping, and the z‐AMOC gives a distorted image of the real circulation. This is why recent studies underlined the importance of computing the AMOC as a function of density in addition to AMOC as the function of vertical coordinate. In this paper, we analyze the fundamental differences with respect to AMOC variability in both frameworks in a 900‐year run with the AWI climate model. We demonstrate that the latitudinal position of overturning maxima, amplitude, and variability show substantial differences between the frameworks. We suggest that the ϱ‐AMOC and watermass transformation framework should be used routinely in standard analyses, including forthcoming intercomparison projects. In East Greenland, sedimentation during the Middle Devonian‐earliest Carboniferous interval was characterized by the Old Red Sandstone Molasse Basin deposits. The continental succession recorded folding and intrabasinal unconformities associated with the activation of extensional detachments and core complex formation which post‐dated high‐P granulite facies metamorphism at c. 403 Ma. The extensional collapse responsible for the initiation of the Devonian basin and associated bimodal magmatism must be understood in the context of continued continental convergence during the Early Carboniferous, required by ultrahigh‐pressure metamorphism in North‐East Greenland at c. 355 Ma. Along a small nunatak within the Wordie Gletscher in Payer Land, NE Greenland (lat. 74°N), Precambrian gneisses recording Devonian granulite‐facies metamorphism are in tectonic contact with the molasse deposits along an ESE‐ward dipping thrust fault: the Scotstounhill Thrust. This paper will discuss the role of Devonian contractional structures and contemporaneous extensional faulting and present a new tectonic model that accounts for the exhumation of deep crustal rocks by these coupled mechanisms. The Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS) was launched aboard the Ice Cloud and land‐Elevation Satellite‐2 (ICESat‐2) satellite in September 2018. ATLAS is a single wavelength (532 nm) lidar system designed to acquire high resolution measurements of the earth's surface while also obtaining atmospheric backscatter from molecules, clouds, and aerosols. Because ATLAS is optimized for altimetry, the atmospheric data acquired is unique in many respects and requires non‐standard analysis techniques. For example, the high repetition rate laser limits the vertical extent of the profiles to just 14 km and causes atmospheric scattering from above 15 km to be added to the scattering in the lower 0–14 km profile. In addition, the limited vertical range of the acquired profiles renders it difficult to compute the magnitude of the solar background and hinders the application of standard calibration techniques. Despite these limitations, methods have been developed to successfully produce data products that have value to the atmospheric community for cloud and aerosol research and are currently available at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). In this paper we describe the ICESat‐2 atmospheric channel and the methods used to process the ATLAS raw photon count data to obtain calibrated backscatter and higher level products such as layer heights and type, blowing snow, column optical depth and apparent surface reflectance. The creation of a long record of cloud and aerosol observations is very important for detecting changes that may be occurring due to humanity's influence on the climate system. Sea surface temperature (SST) observations in the North Atlantic since 1870 reveal a region of enhanced warming off the northeastern coast of North America, and a region of cooling to the south of Greenland. It has been hypothesized that these adjacent SST trends are a result of long‐term changes in the buoyancy‐driven ocean circulation—a slowdown of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. The impacts of these historical SST trends on the atmosphere are estimated using idealized atmospheric general circulation model experiments in which the global atmosphere is exposed to modern climatological forcing minus the aforementioned regional SST trends. The local response includes a negative North Atlantic Oscillation tendency and southward shift of the wind forcing for the subtropical gyre. Due to planetary wave propagation, the regional SST trends also induce a northward shift of the intertropical convergence zone over the Indian Ocean. Implications for climate feedbacks and projections are discussed. Plain Language Summary: The ocean surface is warming over most of the planet, with a couple of notable exceptions. One is over the North Atlantic Ocean, just south of Greenland, where the temperature of the ocean surface has actually been cooling by about 1°C since 1870. Climate change threatens many well‐preserved archaeological sites in the Arctic. The paper presents the first Arctic multi‐threat assessment focusing on the Nuuk region of Greenland. The results suggest that the majority of the 336 known archaeological sites are already exposed to impacts from microbial degradation, permafrost thaw and vegetation, and that these impacts will increase over the next 80 years. Additional impacts from coastal erosion are only noted at a limited number of sites due to a predominant consolidated and uplifting coast. Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is a new technology in which seismic energy is detected, at high spatial and temporal resolution, using the propagation of laser pulses in a fiber‐optic cable. We show analyses from the first glaciological borehole DAS deployment to measure the englacial and subglacial seismic properties of Store Glacier, a fast‐flowing outlet of the Greenland Ice Sheet. We record compressional and shear waves in 1,043 m‐deep vertical seismic profiles, sampled at 10 m vertical resolution, and detect a transition from isotropic to anisotropic ice at 84% of ice thickness, consistent with the Holocene‐Wisconsin transition. We identify subglacial reflections originating from the base of a 20 m‐thick layer of consolidated sediment and, from attenuation measurements, interpret temperate ice in the lowermost 100 m of the glacier. Our findings highlight the promising potential of DAS technology to constrain the seismic properties of glaciers and ice sheets. Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) is an Arctic highly autonomous subnational island jurisdiction (SNIJ) of Denmark, its former coloniser. The coronavirus (COVID‐19) pandemic of 2020 has influenced both Kalaallit Nunaat's relations with the outside world and relations between people and places within the territory. The Kalaallit Nunaat government's response to the pandemic, including both internal and external travel bans and restrictions on movement, has focused on eradicating the disease from the territory. This strategy, however, is challenged both by the SNIJ's economic reliance on Denmark and by the Danish government's own strategy of mitigating the disease. This paper explores the ways in which the coronavirus pandemic has altered how the people of Kalaallit Nunaat interact with the people of Denmark and with one another, ultimately shedding light on the relationship between islands, disease, and geopolitics more generally. From the onset of melt in early June, corresponding declines in Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite‐2 (ICESat‐2) freeboard and surface albedo can be seen over the entire Arctic sea ice cover. In the 2019 summer, area‐averaged freeboard decreased from 34 cm prior to melt to a minimum of 12 cm in August while the area‐averaged albedo decreased from ~0.7 to 0.38 for the same period. Calculations using ICESat‐2 freeboards and modeled ice thickness from Pan‐Arctic Ice Ocean Modeling and Assimilation System (PIOMAS) give area‐averaged snow depths ranging from 17 cm prior to melt to 3 cm in August over seasonal ice and from 34 to 4 cm over multiyear ice. Mean rates of snow ablation (including evaporation) in mid‐June were as high as 2 cm/day, comparable to field records from other years. Increases in freeboard after mid‐August in the high latitude (>80°N) multiyear ice cover, north of the Greenland coast, are likely due to earlier freeze‐up and snow accumulation in these regions with shorter melt seasons. These results will allow for an improved understanding of the impact of the snow layer on the fate of the ice cover at the end of the summer. Passive acoustic monitoring has revolutionized the characterization of industrial processes and the acoustic wavefield in various environments. However, cryospheric acoustic phenomena remain largely unknown, especially at medium and small scales. Furthermore, the englacial drainage system is poorly documented, even though it is fundamental for understanding water routing through the glacier body. Here I present the first‐of‐its‐kind in situ records of periodic or sustained acoustic signals generated by water drainage through crevasses at the calving front of a glacier, in this case a Greenlandic tidewater glacier. The generative mechanisms of gurgling and bubbling noise are explained as flow‐induced sounds that are excited by intermittent air‐water two‐phase flow and Helmholtz resonance, respectively. This paper demonstrates that there is the tremendous potential to study near‐surface glacier systems using acoustic methods and detect different flow patterns in englacial conduits from their acoustic signatures, both of which can significantly advance our understanding of glaciological processes. Substantial changes have occurred in the Arctic Ocean in the last decades. Not only sea ice has retreated significantly, but also the ocean at middepth showed a warming tendency. By using simulations we identified a mechanism that intensifies the upward trend in ocean heat supply to the Arctic Ocean through Fram Strait. The reduction in sea ice export through Fram Strait induced by Arctic sea ice decline increases the salinity in the Greenland Sea, which lowers the sea surface height and strengthens the cyclonic gyre circulation in the Nordic Seas. The Atlantic Water volume transport to the Nordic Seas and Arctic Ocean is consequently strengthened. This enhances the warming trend of the Arctic Atlantic Water layer, potentially contributing to the Arctic "Atlantification." Our study suggests that the Nordic Seas can play the role of a switchyard to influence the heat budget of the Arctic Ocean. Nares Strait, a major connection between the Arctic Ocean and Baffin Bay, was blocked by coalescent Innuitian and Greenland ice sheets during the last glaciation. This paper focuses on the events and processes leading to the opening of the strait and the environmental response to establishment of the Arctic‐Atlantic throughflow. The study is based on sedimentological, mineralogical and foraminiferal analyses of radiocarbon‐dated cores 2001LSSL‐0014PC and TC from northern Baffin Bay. Radiocarbon dates on benthic foraminifera were calibrated with ΔR = 220±20 years. Basal compact pebbly mud is interpreted as a subglacial deposit formed by glacial overriding of unconsolidated marine sediments. It is overlain by ice‐proximal (red/grey laminated, ice‐proximal glaciomarine unit barren of foraminifera and containing >2 mm clasts interpreted as ice‐rafted debris) to ice‐distal (calcareous, grey pebbly mud with foraminifera indicative of a stratified water column with chilled Atlantic Water fauna and species associated with perennial and then seasonal sea ice cover) glacial marine sediment units. The age model indicates ice retreat into Smith Sound as early as c. 11.7 and as late as c. 11.2 cal. ka BP followed by progressively more distal glaciomarine conditions as the ice margin retreated toward the Kennedy Channel. We hypothesize that a distinct IRD layer deposited between 9.3 and 9 (9.4–8.9 1σ) cal. ka BP marks the break‐up of ice in Kennedy Channel resulting in the opening of Nares Strait as an Arctic‐Atlantic throughflow. Overlying foraminiferal assemblages indicate enhanced marine productivity consistent with entry of nutrient‐rich Arctic Surface Water. A pronounced rise in agglutinated foraminifers and sand‐sized diatoms, and loss of detrital calcite characterize the uppermost bioturbated mud, which was deposited after 4.8 (3.67–5.55 1σ) cal. ka BP. In order to document changes in Holocene glacier extent and activity in NE Greenland (~73° N) we study marine sediment records that extend from the fjords ( PS2631 and PS2640), across the shelf ( PS2623 and PS2641), to the Greenland Sea ( JM07-174 GC). The primary bedrock geology of the source areas is the Caledonian sediment outcrop, including Devonian red beds, plus early Neoproterozoic gneisses and early Tertiary volcanics. We examine the variations in colour ( CIE*), grain size, and bulk mineralogy (from X-ray diffraction of the <2 mm sediment fraction). Fjord core PS2640 in Sofia Sund, with a marked red hue, is distinct in grain size, colour and mineralogy from the other fjord and shelf cores. Five distinct grain-size modes are distinguished of which only one is associated with a coarse ice-rafting signal - this mode is rare in the mid- and late Holocene. A sediment unmixing program (SedUnMix MC) is used to characterize down-core changes in sediment composition based on the upper late Holocene sediments from cores PS2640 (Sofia Sund), PS2631 (Kaiser Franz Joseph Fjord) and PS2623 (south of Shannon Is), and surface samples from the Kara Sea (as an indicator of transport from the Russian Arctic shelves). Major changes in mineral composition are noted in all cores with possible coeval shifts centred c. 2.5, 4.5 and 7.5 cal. ka BP (±0.5 ka) but are rarely linked with changes in the grain-size spectra. Coarse IRD (>2 mm) and IRD-grain-size spectra are rare in the last 9-10 cal. ka BP and, in contrast with areas farther south (~68° N), there is no distinct IRD signal at the onset of neoglaciation. Aim This paper integrates pollen-analytical data from sites across southern Greenland to revisit the debate regarding which plants may have been introduced during the Norse colonization or landnám c. ad 985. Location Palynological data are drawn from 14 sites (lakes and mires) located within the former Eastern Settlement of Norse Greenland ( c. 60.9° N, 45.5° W). Methods Maps are presented displaying palynological data for three taxa ( Rumex acetosella, Polygonum aviculare and Achillea millefolium), which earlier scholars have argued are 'Old Norse' anthropochores. The maps display pollen frequencies at regular ( c. 100-year) intervals across a period ( ad 800-1500) encompassing Norse settlement. Results Maps for c. ad 800 and 900 (prior to Norse arrival) display the taxa as locally absent, with the appearance and expansion of their pollen at multiple sites from c. ad 1000 ( landnám) providing support for the assumption that each taxon arrived with the first settlers. A general and widespread decline in pollen frequencies for these 'Old Norse' elements on the c. ad 1500 map (following Norse abandonment) demonstrates a close connection between these plants and a cultural landscape that was shaped and maintained predominantly via animal husbandry. Main conclusions Patterns emerging from this exercise may initiate wider debates related to the pattern and character of the Norse colonization of Greenland. It is suggested that differences in the function or role of farm sites could have led to the creation of greater areas of favourable habitat for ' Old Norse' flora in some locations relative to others, and that uneven patterns of colonization and the spread of ' Old Norse' plants might be explained if their introduction - presumably from Iceland - first occurred at only a few locations. Until recently nothing indicated an unequal sex ratio in the widespread Greenland seed-bug Nysius groenlandicus (Zetterstedt) (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae). However, recently populations more or less devoid of males were discovered in high arctic Northeast Greenland. This initiated an inspection of the entire material of the species collected in Greenland and now preserved at the Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen. It was found that the sex ratio varied significantly among different locations. In most cases females were most abundant, but males were either scarce or absent only in samples from Northeast Greenland, indicating that here the species reproduces asexually. This paper demonstrates that the differing sex distributions can be explained by climatic factors (temperature, precipitation) and that the degree of continentality (distance from the open sea) promotes female-biased sex ratios. Aim The objective of this paper is to explore the relationships that exist between vegetation and modern pollen rain in the open, largely treeless landscape of subarctic Greenland. The implications of these results for the interpretation of fossil pollen assemblages from the time of the Norse landnám are then examined. Location The study area is the sheep farming district of Qassiarsuk in the subarctic, subcontinental vegetational and climatic zone of southern Greenland (61° N, 45° W). Between c.ad 1000–1500 this region was contained within the Norse Eastern Settlement. Methods Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) of harmonized plant–pollen data sets is used to compare plant cover in 64 vegetation quadrats with pollen assemblages obtained from moss polsters at matching locations. Presence/absence data are also used to calculate indices of association, over- and under-representation for pollen types. Results Good correspondence between paired vegetation–pollen samples occurs in many cases, particularly in locations where Salix glauca– Betula glandulosa dwarf shrub heath is dominant, and across herbaceous field boundaries and meadows. Pollen samples are found to be poor at reflecting actual ground cover where ericales or Juniperus communis are the locally dominant shrubs. Dominant or ubiquitous taxa within this landscape ( Betula, Salix and Poaceae) are found to be over-represented in pollen assemblages, as are several of the ‘weeds’ generally accepted as introduced by the Norse settlers. Main conclusions Due to their over-representation in the pollen rain, many of the Norse apophytes and introductions (e.g. Rumex acetosa and R. acetosella) traditionally used to infer human activity in Greenland should be particularly sensitive indicators for landnám, allowing early detection of Norse activity in fossil assemblages. Pteridophyte spores are found to be disassociated with the ground cover of ferns and clubmosses, but are over-represented in pollen assemblages, indicating extra-local or regional sources and long residence times in soil/sediment profiles for these microfossils. A pollen record for Hordeum-type registered in close proximity to a field containing barley suggests that summer temperatures under the current climatic regime are, at least on occasion, sufficient to allow flowering. Summary Ikaite tufa columns from the Ikka Fjord in south-western Greenland constitute a natural, stable environment at low temperature and with a pH ranging from neutral at the exterior to very alkaline (pH 10.4) at the interior of the column. Phylogenetic analysis of culturable organisms revealed ten different isolates representing three of the major bacterial divisions. Nine of the isolates showed 94–99% similarity to known sequences, whereas one isolate displayed a low degree of similarity (less than 90%) to a Cyclobacterium species. Seven of the isolates were shown to be cold active alkaliphiles, whereas three isolates showed optimal growth at neutral pH. Phylogenetic analysis of DNA isolated directly from the ikaite material demonstrated the presence of a microbial flora more diverse than the culturable isolates. Whereas approximately half of the phylotypes showed 90–99% similarity to known meso- or thermophilic alkaliphiles, the rest of the sequences displayed less than 90% similarity when compared to known 16S rRNA gene sequences in databases. Thus, in the present paper, we demonstrate that ikaite columns that host a specialized macroscopic flora and fauna also contain a unique, cold active, alkaliphilic microflora. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract This paper investigates the relationship between vascular plant production and CH4 emissions from an arctic wet tundra ecosystem in north-east Greenland. Light intensity was manipulated by shading during three consecutive growing seasons (1998–2000). The shading treatment resulted in lower carbon cycling in the ecosystem as mean seasonal net ecosystem exchange (NEE) decreased from -336 to -196 mg CO2 m-2 h-1 and from -476 to -212 mg CO2 m-2 h-1 in 1999 and 2000, respectively, and total ecosystem respiration decreased from 125 to 94 mg CO2 m-2 h-1 in 1999 and from 409 to 306 mg CO2 m-2 h-1 in 2000. Seasonal mean CH4 emissions in controls and shaded plots were, respectively, 6.5 and 4.5 mg CH4 m-2 h-1 in 1999 and 8.3 and 6.2 mg CH4 m-2 h-1 in 2000. We found that CH4 emission was sensitive to NEE and carbon turnover, and it is reasonable to assume that the correlation was due to a combined effect of vegetative CH4 transport and substrate quality coupled to vascular plant production. Total above-ground biomass was correlated to mean seasonal CH4 emission, but separation into species showed that plant-mediated CH4 transport was highly species dependent. Potential CH4 production peaked at the same depth as maximum root density (5–15 cm) and treatment differences further suggest that substrate quality was negatively affected by decreased NEE in the shaded plots. The concentration of dissolved CH4 decreased in the control plots as the growing season progressed while it was relatively stable in the shaded plots. SummaryThe high-arctic environment is an environment where the consequences of global warming may be significant. In this paper we report on findings on carbon dioxide and water vapour fluxes above a sedge-dominated fen at Zackenberg (74°28′N, 20°34′ W) in The National Park of North and East Greenland. Eddy covariance measurements were initiated at the start of the growing season and terminated shortly before its end lasting 45 days. The net CO2 flux during daytime reaches a high of 10 μmol m–2s–1, and around the summer solstice, net CO2 assimilation occurred at midnight, resulting in net carbon gain during the night. The measured carbon dioxide fluxes compare well to estimates based on the photosynthesis model by Collatz et al. (1991). The total growing-season net ecosystem CO2 exchange was estimated to be 96 g C m–2 based on the carbon dioxide model and micrometeorological data. Finally, the combined CO2 assimilation and soil respiration models are used for examining the dependence of the carbon dioxide budget on temperature. The ecosystem is found to function optimally given the present temperature conditions whereas either an increase or a decrease in temperature would reduce the ecosystem CO2 accumulation. Summary Aim The aim of this paper is to describe and interpret early Holocene floras and faunas. Location The floras and faunas come from various localities in North-east Greenland. Methods Sediment samples were wet sieved, and macrofossils picked out and dated by the AMS radiocarbon-dating method. Results Sediments, dated to the first centuries after the last glacial stage came to an abrupt end, contain a macroflora of bryophytes and a few herbs, and we suggest that these plant remains represent a pioneer vegetation entirely without woody plants. The named species of herbs are either confined to the northern parts of Greenland at present, or they become increasingly more important towards the north. Crowberry is the oldest woody plant recovered; it was present at 10.4 cal. ka BP, and it appears to have been common during the early Holocene in East Greenland. Main conclusions We suggest that the majority of the extant flora of vascular plants of East Greenland arrived by long distance dispersal during the Holocene. Some species may also have arrived during the late-glacial, and a few hardy species that are adapted to low summer temperatures may have survived the last glacial stage in nonglaciated areas. Some hardy animals may also have survived, but the majority of the fauna are considered Holocene immigrants. Establishing the timing of maximum Holocene warmth in the Arctic is critical for understanding global climate system response to external forcing. In Greenland, challenges in obtaining climate records that span the full Holocene have hampered efforts to robustly identify when the Holocene Thermal Maximum occurred. Reconstructing land‐based ice sheet history can fill this gap because these ice sheet regions respond sensitively to summer temperature. We synthesize new and published 10Be and 14C ages from southwest Greenland to map Greenland ice sheet margin positions from 12 to 7 ka and calculate retreat rates from 12 to 0 ka. We found that maximum Greenland ice sheet recession occurred between ~10.4 and 9.1 ka. Our reconstruction suggests that summer air temperatures in southwest Greenland were highest from ~10.4 to 9.1 ka, providing support for an early regional Holocene Thermal Maximum. These results can serve as benchmarks for comparison with ice sheet and climate model simulations. Plain Language Summary: As the climate warms, Arctic temperatures are expected to increase at a faster rate than the rest of the world. Previous research has determined that Arctic temperatures were several degrees Celsius higher than today at some point in the past 12,000 years, and understanding when this warm time occurred might give scientists important insights into Arctic climate conditions in the future. However, in Greenland, the timing of maximum warmth is not well defined because many existing climate reconstructions do not span all of the past 12,000 years. In this paper, we use the retreat rate of the western Greenland ice sheet to determine when the warmest time of the past 12,000 years occurred. This method is advantageous because (1) retreat rates of this part of the Greenland ice sheet are directly related to summer air temperature and (2) the retreat history of the western Greenland ice sheet retreat is well known. We bring together new and previously published data that relates to Greenland ice sheet change to calculate how quickly the ice sheet retreated between 12,000 years ago and the present. Using this information, we determined that the warmest time of the past 12,000 years occurred between about 10,400 and 9,100 years ago, which is several thousand years earlier than some previous estimates. These results can help improve computer simulations that are used to predict future changes in Arctic ice sheet extent, climate, and sea‐level.
