Capillary wicking in a thicker gel blot microfluidics paper has been investigated through a combination of an analytical framework, experiments, and numerical simulations. The primary objectives of this work are to investigate the concentration-dependent wicking process inside thicker microfluidic paper and to estimate the concentration-dependent permeability using both theoretical models and experimental data. An additional goal is to estimate the parameters for saturation-dependent flow modeling in thicker microfluidic paper. To comprehend the wicking phenomenon on thicker gel blot paper, a series of experiments employing aqueous food dye solutions at varying concentrations has been conducted. In order to calculate the temporal wicking length analytically, the Brinkman-extended Darcy equation is implemented. By modifying the permeability expression for a simple rectangular unidirectional fiber cell and pure liquid, the expression of effective permeability for the analytical framework has also been introduced. The concentrations of the food dye solutions appear to have a substantial influence on the wicking phenomenon. Effective permeability and wicking length have been found to follow a decreasing pattern at lower concentrations while both increase at higher values. Intriguingly, employing a microfluidics paper with a relatively greater thickness facilitates the visualization of the fluid front. This phenomenon is identified by the formation of an acute angle at intermediate time instants, while the fluid front angle assumes an angle nearly ∼90° during smaller and higher time instants. In order to evaluate the saturation-dependent capillary pressure and permeability, the empirical correlation of concentration-dependent Brooks and Corey parameters is additionally determined experimentally. These parameters are subsequently employed in numerical simulations to illustrate the saturation-dependent flow field using Richards' equation. Furthermore, numerical simulations based on these estimated model parameters have been conducted, and it turns out that the saturation field has an excellent agreement with the experimental results. In this article, we present a mathematical model and numerical simulation of the coffee-ring effect on porous papers. The numerical method is based on Monte Carlo simulation. The proposed model is simple but can capture the main mechanism of coffee stain formation on porous papers. Several numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm. We can obtain the coffee-ring effect on porous papers as the computer simulation results. In view of the present situation that the exhaust waste heat of the hot air hood in the paper drying section is too much and the environment is not friendly, a closed heat pump drying system model applied to the exhaust air hood is proposed and established. Effects of evaporation temperature and condensation temperature on supply air temperature, supply air moisture content, system performance coefficient (COP) and dehumidification energy consumption ratio (SMER) were studied. Results show that with the increase of condensation temperature, the supply air temperature is unchanged, and the moisture content of the supply air increase, while the COP and SMER of the system show a downward trend. The moisture content of supply air decrease with the increase of evaporation temperature, while the supply air temperature, COP and SMER all show an upward trend. Therefore, in order to improve the drying characteristics and improve the performance of the heat pump system, the condensation temperature can be reduced and the evaporation temperature can be increased. Numerical simulation of polypropylene laminated paper insulation is a serious challenge, as it must take into account the layered structure and presence of longitudinal and radial gaps in the coils of the winded tape for cables with sector-shape conductive cores. Thus far, it has been performed only with serious simplifications. We propose a technique for numerical modeling of electric parameters in this type of insulation by reducing a complex 3D problem to a simplified 2D model that takes into account the main influencing factors. The results of modeling the distribution of electric field strength and current density in insulation are presented, and the influence of the location of gaps between the edges of winded tape on the conductivity of cable insulation is estimated. Analytical expressions are obtained for estimating the electrical resistance of insulation while taking into account the parameters of the butt gap between the insulating tapes. The results of calculations, numerical modeling, and experimentally measured values of electrical resistance are compared, showing that there is a good match. The specific energy absorption of a thin-walled tube can be improved by filler. This study examined the potential use of a cheaper biomass filler, paper scraps, to enhance the energy absorption characteristics of the structure while reducing its cost, compared to that with a traditional filler such as foam material. Quasi-static crushing tests and finite element simulations were performed by using the explicit non-linear finite element software LS-DYNA to determine the improvements to the mean crushing force and specific energy absorption of the steel tube when filled with different densities of paper scraps. The mean crushing force and specific energy absorption of the empty tube, the paper scraps, and thin-walled tube filled with paper scraps were determined, and corresponding numerical simulations were performed. The simulation and test results showed that the impact performance of tube filled with paper scraps was greatly improved when paper scraps density was 0.35 g/cm3. By optimizing paper scraps filling structure, a new structure that could further enhance the specific energy absorption was obtained. Alternating current (ac) losses in conductor-on-rounded-core (CORC) cables of YBCO high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes are a significant challenge in HTS power applications. This study employs two finite element analysis (FEA) models to investigate the contributions from different ac loss components and provide approaches for reducing ac losses in cables. An FEA model based on the T-A formulation treats the cross section of thin superconducting layers as 1D lines and, therefore, only can predict the ac loss generated by the perpendicular magnetic field. In contrast, the model based on H-formulation can be performed on the actual 2D rectangular cross section HTS tapes to provide the total ac losses generated by magnetic fluxes penetrating from both the edges and surfaces of HTS tapes, although this model requires more computing time and memory. The 1D and 2D simulation models were validated by cross comparing the results from both models and by comparing sub-section and full cross section models. Subsequently, two models relate cable design and operational parameters to the surface and edge losses of a two-layer CORC cable by considering the (1) relative contributions of edge and surface losses to the overall ac losses; (2) effect of the current distribution between inner and outer HTS layers on ac losses; (3) impact of the tape alignment on ac losses in each HTS layer; (4) influence of the thickness of HTS layers on ac losses; (5) effect of size and number of inter-tape gaps on ac losses; and (6) contribution frequency on the ac losses. The research results given in this paper are therefore not only valuable to suggest strategies for reducing ac loss in multi-layer cables but also for developing more accurate and effective methods to calculate ac loss in CORC HTS cables. The heterocharge accumulated in the oil‐paper insulation system of the converter transformer will enhance the local electric field and cause insulation deterioration. Numerical simulation is an effective method to analyze heterocharge. Currently, the numerical simulation of heterocharge is mainly based on the bipolar charge transport (BCT) model and the impurity ion transport (IIT) model. However, the effects of temperature, conductivity, and thickness of oil‐impregnated paper on charge transport have not been considered in these models. In view of this, a modified charge transport (MCT) model by introducing the Maxwell–Wagner model and heat conduction equation is proposed in this paper based on the BCT model and IIT model. Then, the influence of multi‐factors (temperature gradient, moisture content, and oil‐impregnated paper thickness) on heterocharge accumulation is investigated by using the MCT model. The simulation results obtained by the MCT model are more consistent with the experimental results than the BCT model, which proves the accuracy and superiority of the MCT model. Moreover, the increase in temperature gradient, moisture content, and oil‐impregnated paper thickness will enlarge the ion dissociation rate, conductivity, and trap density, and thus promote the generation of heterocharge. In this work, we determine the dissociation line of the nitrogen (N2) hydrate by computer simulation using the TIP4P/Ice model for water and the TraPPE force field for N2. This work is the natural extension of Paper I, in which the dissociation temperature of the N2 hydrate has been obtained at 500, 1000, and 1500 bar [Algaba et al., J. Chem. Phys. 159, 224707 (2023)] using the solubility method and assuming single occupancy. We extend our previous study and determine the dissociation temperature of the N2 hydrate at different pressures, from 500 to 4500 bar, taking into account the single and double occupancy of the N2 molecules in the hydrate structure. We calculate the solubility of N2 in the aqueous solution as a function of temperature when it is in contact with a N2-rich liquid phase and when in contact with the hydrate phase with single and double occupancy via planar interfaces. Both curves intersect at a certain temperature that determines the dissociation temperature at a given pressure. We observe a negligible effect of occupancy on the dissociation temperature. Our findings are in very good agreement with the experimental data taken from the literature. We have also obtained the driving force for the nucleation of the hydrate as a function of temperature and occupancy at several pressures. As in the case of the dissociation line, the effect of occupancy on the driving force for nucleation is negligible. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the effect of the occupancy on the driving force for nucleation of a hydrate that exhibits sII crystallographic structure is studied from computer simulation. This paper presents a brief overview of the use of magnetic field in studying droplet adhesion to a fiber or a fibrous surface. The paper starts by discussing ways to quantify the force required to detach a droplet from a fiber for its applications in coalescence filtration, i.e., removal of dispersed droplets from a gaseous or liquid flow using a fibrous filter. It then continues to discuss droplet detachment from a fibrous surface or penetrating into a thin fibrous coating. The emphasis is put on a recently develop magnetic approach for measuring force of detachment and on its novel simplicity and non-intrusive nature in the context of existing droplet detachment methods. Our review also includes a discussion on force of detachment for multiphase droplets comprised of two immiscible liquids, i.e., compound droplets. Thin-walled tubular deployable composite boom (DCB) has gained significant attention due to its lightweight, simple structure and high packaging efficiency. The experimental and numerical simulation methods were employed in this paper to investigate the folding behavior of the DCB. Using T700/epoxy unidirectional reinforced prepreg as raw material, DCB specimens were prepared by the vacuum bag method. To complete the folding experiments of DCB specimens, a folding mechanism was designed and manufactured. Folding experiments of DCB specimens were conducted and folding moment versus rotational displacement curves were measured. In addition, a Finite Element Model (FEM) was established to predict the folding behavior of the DCB. Different failure criteria were considered in the numerical analysis, including the Tsai‐Hill criterion and maximum stress criterion. Prediction results using the FEM were compared with experimental results, and both sets of results were in good agreement. It is shown that the DCB can achieve the folding function without failure. The research results in this paper are of great significance to the practical engineering application of the DCB. Paper chromatography is a simple and harmless experiment suitable for lower secondary education. Besides the training of subject‐specific contents, paper chromatography allows the application of modelling and simulation since the submicroscopic processes can be simplified in a way that they become understandable in lower secondary education. Here, the application of digital tools in addition to the experimental performance of paper chromatography in a compulsory STEM course in grade 6 is reported. Following a series of experiments, chromatography is at first simulated by a board game and then by computer simulations. Such simulation program allows the variation of the parameters in order to explore the model and to introduce the particle concept of matter and molecular interactions. The implementation with a graphical programming environment such as Scratch also allows the programming by pupils in this age group. The ability to determine the condition of paper (e.g. its brittleness) and its permanence is a need in libraries and archives. This study investigates various bend tests and applies these tests to aged paper with the goal of finding easy, non-destructive tests to determine the mechanical properties of paper. The cantilever test was previously shown to accurately assess mechanical properties of paper-based materials, such as elastic and bending moduli as well as the bending length. This work investigates the hanging pear loop and clamped fold tests and compares the results with those found with the cantilever test. The results show that the strain and curvature induced by the two tests are much larger than those experienced in the cantilever test. This large strain and curvature induce plastic behaviour and make the hanging pear loop and clamped fold tests inappropriate for use on paper-based materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydrothermal treatment of sludge within the pulp and paper industry can have a wide range of possible reactor solid loads for different sludge types. The objectives of this work were to determine the effect of reactor temperature and solid load on the properties of sludge hydrochar and to simulate hydrothermal treatment of sludge within a pulp and paper mill. Laboratory experiments were first performed within reactor temperature and solid load ranges of 180–260 °C and 10–50%, respectively, and the effects of sludge treatment were determined by comparing parallel mill-scale simulations. Based on the results, both reactor temperature and solid load had a statistically significant effect on the solid, ash, carbon and energy yields of sludge hydrochar. Increasing solid load minimized carbon dissolution to the liquid phase and increased the solid and energy yield of the attained hydrochar. According to mill-scale simulations in a 9 m 3 batch reactor, treating primary sludge alone produced an energy surplus of 22–36 GJ through char incineration, decreasing to 12–22 GJ and 3.4–9.1 GJ for mixed and secondary sludge, respectively. Mixing primary and secondary sludge reduced the overall energy surplus by 2–8% compared with treating the sludge streams separately in two reactors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract We report here on paper-supported thin sample layer voltammetry for the determination of ions. To achieve this goal, a simple setup for the coupling of a commercially available electrode to a silver rod electrode was designed and evaluated for paper-supported thin-layer voltammetry. Linear scan ion transfer voltammetry was explored here for ion-selective membranes doped with an ionophore. The ion-transfer processes and electrochemical behaviors of the system are here evaluated and confirmed by numerical simulation. In the proof-of-concept experiments described, the ions tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBA+) and potassium (K+) were studied as model analytes at membranes without and with ionophore, respectively. A linear relationship from 0.1 mM to 1.0 mM K+ was obtained between the charge and ion concentration. The coexistence of background sodium ions did not give appreciable interference, but the background wave was not completely isolated from the analyte wave, as also confirmed by the model. The methodology was successfully demonstrated for determination of K+ in mineral water. It is anticipated that this paper-supported thin-layer detection approach may provide an attractive readout protocol for disposable paper-based analytical devices as the methodology does not place strict demands on reference electrode performance. In this study, the space charge in oil-impregnated thick pressboard and Kraft paper were measured by the pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) method from -20 to +60 °C. A bipolar charge transport model was used to simulate the transport processes of homocharge and heterocharge, and the acoustic attenuation process in the samples. The test results show that space charge accumulates in the thick pressboard and Kraft paper increases first and then decreases with temperature, and its maximum appears at 40°C, while little space charge accumulates at -20°C. The space charge near the lower electrode shrinks in the oil-impregnated thick pressboard at high temperature and the shrinkage is larger at 60°C. In the oil-impregnated Kraft paper, the accumulation and charge density of positive charge is different from negative charge. The ion transport process model simulates the charge shrinkage near the electrode, and disappears at the upper electrode after the acoustic attenuation simulation. The model established in this paper can well simulate the space charge distribution of oil-impregnated thick pressboard and Kraft paper under different temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract A number of problems associated with dimensional stability of paper products have to do with hygroexpansion in response to changes in humidity or moisture content. The main underlying mechanism of hygroexpansion in paper is the effect of the change of fiber cross-sections transferred through fiber bonds. In fact, the transverse expansion of fibers can be an order of magnitude greater than the longitudinal expansion. Addressing such problems using modeling on the microscale is associated with large computational costs since both the bonds and the fibers need to be resolved. We present a method for modeling the hygro or thermal expansion of interconnected fiber networks modeled with beam elements and connected through beam-to-beam contact. Being a line structure, beams can only support pointwise contact, which poses a challenge for modeling the force transfer induced by the deformation of the cross-sections at the contact point. The idea of implementing the stress transfer is to use a concurrent multiscale approach in which the bond level is resolved in detail using the configuration of the fibers and the computed strains are passed over to the beam elements. We verify and prove the applicability of this approach by comparing it with continuum models. We demonstrate the advantage of using this approach in terms of its tremendous saving in time. The use of beam models for modeling the hygro- or thermal expansion of fiber networks enables considering relevant sizes in the problems involving dimensional stability, in particular those associated with embedded inhomogeneities. We will show the applicability of the model by providing insights into published experimental observations on the hygroexpansion properties of paper products. Finally, we will demonstrate that the use of a 2D model to simulate the inter-fiber bonds in a network, not only leads to underestimation of out-of-plane deformations, but also to overestimation of the contribution of the transverse deformation of fibers to the in-plane dimensional change of the network. An epiretinal membrane (ERM) is a fibrocellular proliferation on the inner surface of the retina causing blurred and distorted central vision. Surgery is the only effective method for ERM removal. This paper investigated the mechanical properties of ERM peeling using the finite element (FE) method. A FE model of ERM formation on the retina surface was constructed. The failure criterion was applied to the attachment pegs to represent the adhesive force between the ERM and retina. The simulation results were consistent with the experimental data in published research. The maximum peeling force was 4.1 mN at a peeling velocity of 2 mm/s and an angle of 30°. The peeling force was minimum at the peeling angle of 45° and increased with the increase in peeling velocity and Young's modulus of the membrane. Inspired by the emerging field of twistronics, moiré photonic structures have attracted great interest. In this paper, we introduce the concept of the moiré Kagome lattice (MKL), which arises from the overlapping of a Kagome lattice at a commensurable angle of 38.211°. MKL exhibits a significantly broader main photonic bandgap (PBG) when compared to the traditional Kagome lattice. Through numerical simulations, we delved into the adjustable properties of the PBG of MKL by varying lattice parameters, including filling factors and materials. Meanwhile, we also observed the presence of photonic flatbands within the MKL structure. Specifically, the emergence of a super flat isolated flatband aids in achieving single-mode omnidirectional lasers and enhancing the omnidirectional electromagnetic interaction of materials, thereby expanding the applications of moiré photonic crystals. The access of new energy improves the flexibility of distribution network operation, but also leads to more complex mechanism of line loss. Therefore, starting from the nonlinear, fluctuating and multi-scale characteristics of line loss data, and based on the idea of decomposition prediction, this paper proposes a new method of line loss frequency division prediction based on wavelet transform and BIGRU-LSTM (Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit-Long Short Term Memory Network).Firstly, the grey relation analysis and the improved NARMA (Nonlinear Autoregressive Moving Average) correlation analysis method are used to extract the non-temporal and temporal influencing factors of line loss, and the corresponding feature data set is constructed. Then, the historical line loss data is decomposed into physical signals of different frequency bands by using wavelet transform, and the multi-dimensional input data of the prediction network is formed with the above characteristic data set. Finally, the BIGRU-LSTM prediction network is built to realize the probabilistic prediction of high-frequency and low-frequency components of line loss. The effectiveness and applicability of the method proposed in this paper were verified through numerical simulation. By dividing the line loss data into different frequency bands for frequency prediction, the mapping relationship between different line loss components and influencing factors was accurately matched, thereby improving the prediction accuracy. Burden is one of the most important parameter which plays an immense role in rock breakage using explosive energy. It is very difficult to select the optimum burden under different geotechnical and geomining condition. The selection becomes more critical when the excavation method is underground as very few researches or studies have been carried out in such cases. Therefore, in this paper, numerical simulation-based approach has been employed to estimate the optimum burden for ring blasting. The numerical models were created under different scenario including blasthole diameter and strength of the rock. The RHT concrete constitutive model has been used in this paper to study the damage contour under different circumstances. The model output has been used to calculate the volume of rock damage along the free face. This damage volume is further correlated with various parameters. This correlation shows that the damage volume along the free face initially rises with the increase in burden and then starts decreasing after a certain value. The burden value which recorded the maximum volume of rock excavated along the free face has been considered as the optimum burden in this paper. The trial blast has been also carried out at the experimental site for twenty-four rings. The optimum burden achieved from the experimental trial for 102 mm blasthole diameter and rock having uniaxial compressive strength as 92 MPa lies between 2.4 and 2.65 m. However, the optimum burden predicted through developed empirical equation from the numerical model is 2.6 m. The study shows that the simulation-based prediction exhibits a minor deviation within 15% with the experimental result. Hence, to assess the optimum burden under various geotechnical and geomining circumstances, numerical simulation-based approach may be carried out using the proposed methodology. Over 90% of Australia's surfaced roads are unbound pavements with sprayed seals. However, achieving complete impermeability with these seals is challenging, leading to some moisture exchange between pavement layers and the environment. As moisture fluctuations influenced by climatic factors significantly affect the structural performance of particularly unbound granular layers, there is a pressing need to enhance Australian pavement design by incorporating climatic effects to meet better pavement performance. Hence, the current study numerically evaluates the degree of moisture saturation ( S r) variations of pavement layers under different Australian climates. This paper reveals how ambient climate impacts the moisture variations of pavement layers based on the results of 126 numerical simulations performed. Results indicated that the annual rainfall is not an appropriate parameter to decide the service moisture condition of the UGM layer, but the ratio between annual rainfall and annual pan evaporation ( P PE ) combined with the saturated permeability of the seal ( K s) is found to be a better indicator. More importantly, this study develops a novel empirical model to predict the service moisture condition of the UGM layers aiming to advance the current Australian pavement design guide. Furthermore, a correlation between pavement moisture and a widely used climatic index, Thornthwaite Moisture Index (TMI ) is presented in this study. Furthermore, this paper proposes a novel approach to integrating climatic factors into the current Australian pavement design of unbound pavements with thin seals. Hydrogen is an ideal energy source and plays an important role in increasingly global energy issues and environmental problems. Liquid hydrogen (LH2) has many advantages over other storage methods, especially in terms of energy density. However, it may cause enormous harm once it leaks accidently. LH2 leakage is a complex multiphase process involving evaporation, condensation, transfer of mass and heat, and dispersion. In order to study LH2 transportation and storage systems safety, a research project has been carried out to develop a 3D numerical model using an open-source CFD code, OpenFoam, for investigating LH2 accidental release scenarios. Since the release of LH2 is a very complex process, our strategy is to study it step by step. Therefore, in this paper we present our research work at the first stage, a dispersion process of room-temperature gaseous hydrogen without multiphase flow. A small-scale hydrogen release conducted by Sandia National Laboratories is simulated. In this experiment, room-temperature gaseous hydrogen is injected upwards into the air from a small hole with a 1.91 mm diameter. The situations of Froude (Fr) number = 99, 152, and 268 are studied, respectively. The behavior of hydrogen at different Fr numbers is discussed. When high-speed hydrogen enters the air, the speed and concentration of hydrogen decrease rapidly. In addition, the greater the speed, the faster it decays. The result shows a close range of hydrogen reach. Details about the numerical model are introduced. The simulation results are used to verify the validity of the developing numerical model for dispersion and mixing of multi-species. The simulated concentrations and velocity distribution are analyzed and compared with experimental data. The simulation shows a good agreement with the data of Sandia National Laboratories. The agreement between experiments and simulations is measured using the Pearson correlation coefficient (>0.98), which indicates excellent consistency. In the next step, we will integrate the multiphase flow and phase change into the current model. Deep water areas with soft subsea soils, conventional surface conductor into the mud depth is too deep, long waiting time for resting, prone to surface conductor sinking and submerged wellhead instability. In this paper, based on the basic principles of mechanics and the understanding of the structure of the surface conductor, a mechanical model of the bearing capacity of the surface conductor is established. Three types of expandable surface conductors were designed by changing the distribution of the expansion material, in contrast to conventional surface conductors. The bearing characteristics of different structural surface conductors are also investigated by changing the soil parameters from the strength of the submarine soil. The study has obtained: the load-bearing capacity comparison graph between conventional surface conductor and expandable surface conductor; the load-bearing capacity change of expandable surface conductor under the change of soil parameters and the change of expansion material section; and the load-bearing capacity improvement effect of the three expandable surface conductors designed in the paper compared with conventional surface conductors, using stress as the evaluation criterion. In this paper, we first present multiple numerical simulations of the anti-symmetric matrix in the stability criteria for fractional order systems (FOSs). Subsequently, this paper is devoted to the study of the admissibility criteria for descriptor fractional order systems (DFOSs) whose order belongs to (0, 2). The admissibility criteria are provided for DFOSs without eigenvalues on the boundary axes. In addition, a unified admissibility criterion for DFOSs involving the minimal linear matrix inequality (LMI) variable is provided. The results of this paper are all based on LMIs. To solve the control problem of time-varying state-scale nonlinear systems whose initial state is not affected by settling time, fixed-time convergence algorithms are proposed for first-order systems and higher-order systems in this paper. First, a scalar model is used to illustrate how the time-varying feedback parameter can guarantee that the system achieves asymptotic stability while achieving finite-time convergence, and it is proved that the settling time obtained in this paper is only related to the prescribed boundary. This allows us to design the settling time with an appropriate parameter based on the prescribed boundary. To exhibit the effectiveness and extensibility of the proposed algorithm for first-order scalar systems, the results are subsequently extended to general higher-order systems based on the backstepping method. By introducing numerical simulation results, this paper verifies that the proposed algorithm will make the system achieve asymptotic stability and its output can converge to a given boundary, regardless of the system's initial states. This work investigates a prey–predator model featuring a Holling-type II functional response, in which the fear effect of predation on the prey species, as well as prey refuge, are considered. Specifically, the model assumes that the growth rate of the prey population decreases as a result of the fear of predators. Moreover, the detection of the predator by the prey species is subject to a delay known as the fear response delay, which is incorporated into the model. The paper establishes the preliminary conditions for the solution of the delayed model, including positivity, boundedness and permanence. The paper discusses the existence and stability of equilibrium points in the model. In particular, the paper considers the discrete delay as a bifurcation parameter, demonstrating that the system undergoes Hopf bifurcation at a critical value of the delay parameter. The direction and stability of periodic solutions are determined using central manifold and normal form theory. This paper employs a numerical approach to investigate the impact of liquidity shocks on European options in modeling markets. To accurately capture the behavior of European options under liquidity shocks, a coupled system of differential equations is employed, consisting of a degenerate parabolic equation and a diffusion-free equation. The primary focus is on developing and analyzing implicit-explicit methods for numerically simulating European option pricing, specifically considering the presence of liquidity shocks while ensuring the positivity of the solution. In this paper, a mathematical model for a solid spherically symmetric vascular tumor growth with nutrient periodic supply and time delays is studied. Compared to the apoptosis process of tumor cells, there is a time delay in the process of tumor cell division. The cells inside the tumor obtain nutrient σ(r,t) through blood vessels, and the tumor attracts blood vessels at a rate proportional to α(t). So, the boundary value condition ∂σ ∂r + α(t)(σ − ψ(t)) = 0,r = R(t),t > 0, holds on the boundary, where the function ψ(t) is the concentration of nutrient externally supplied to the tumor. Considering that the nutrients provided by the outside world are often periodic, the research in this paper assumes that ψ(t) is a periodic function. Sufficient conditions for the global stability of zero steady state are presented. Under certain conditions, we prove that there exists at least one periodic solution to the model. This paper's primary motivation is to present a globally predefined-time sliding mode control (PtSMC) strategy to stabilize a class of second-order systems subjected to matched and mismatched disturbances. To achieve this, the paper proposes a new exact time disturbance observer (DOB) based on a terminal time regulator, which accurately estimates the disturbances within a prescribed time, effectively preventing the system state from escaping to infinity due to high gains and overestimation. In addition, a new predefined-time sliding mode variable with the estimation of DOB is developed to ensure a predefined-time convergence on the sliding mode phase against mismatched disturbances. The proposed DOB-based technique can alleviate the chattering resulting from the use of an overestimated gain, in contrast to the controller without employing a DOB. Furthermore, a predefined-time reaching law is introduced to guarantee a global predefined-time convergence. This paper establishes the stability of the disturbed second-order system under the proposed controller through strict Lyapunov analysis. The novelty of the proposed method lies in its global predefined-time convergence, chattering-reduced properties and robustness against matched and mismatched disturbances. Therefore, in this article, we designed a six-dimensional fractional-order social media addiction model (FOSMA) in the sense of Caputo, which took into account the professional operations population. The tanh function was introduced into the scheme of sliding mode surface. The elimination of addiction was achieved by the action of the fractional order sliding mode control law. Finally, simulation results showed that fractional order values, nonlinear transmission rates, and specialized operating populations had a significant impact on predicting and controlling addiction. In this paper, a fractional active disturbance rejection control (FADRC) scheme is proposed for remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to enhance high-precision positioning and docking control in the presence of ocean current disturbances and model uncertainties. The scheme comprises a double closed-loop fractional-order PI λ D μ controller (DFOPID) and a model-assisted finite-time sliding-mode extended state observer (MFSESO). Among them, DFOPID effectively compensates for non-matching disturbances, while its fractional-order term enhances the dynamic performance and steady-state accuracy of the system. MFSESO contributes to enhancing the estimation accuracy through the integration of sliding-mode technology and model information, ensuring the finite-time convergence of observation errors. Numerical simulations and pool experiments have shown that the proposed control scheme can effectively resist disturbances and successfully complete high-precision tasks in the absence of an accurate model. This underscores the independence of this control scheme on accurate model data of an operational ROV. Meanwhile, it also has the advantages of a simple structure and easy parameter tuning. Autonomous search is an ongoing cycle of sensing, statistical estimation, and motion control with the objective to find and localise targets in a designated search area. Traditionally, the theoretical framework for autonomous search combines sequential Bayesian estimation with information theoretic motion control. This paper formulates autonomous search in the framework of possibility theory. Although the possibilistic formulation is slightly more involved than the traditional method, it provides a means for quantitative modelling and reasoning in the presence of epistemic uncertainty. This feature is demonstrated in the paper in the context of partially known probability of detection, expressed as an interval value. The paper presents an elegant Bayes-like solution to sequential estimation, with the reward function for motion control defined to take into account the epistemic uncertainty. In this paper, we investigate an initial-boundary value problem of a reaction–diffusion equation in a bounded domain with a Robin boundary condition and introduce some particular parameters to consider the non-zero flux on the boundary. This problem arises in the study of mosquito populations under the intervention of the population replacement method, where the boundary condition takes into account the inflow and outflow of individuals through the boundary. Using phase plane analysis, the present paper studies the existence and properties of non-constant steady-state solutions depending on several parameters. Then, we prove some sufficient conditions for their stability. We show that the long-time efficiency of this control method depends strongly on the size of the treated zone and the migration rate. This paper explores the finite‐time stability of reaction–diffusion genetic regulatory networks with time‐varying mixed delays. These delays encompass discrete delays and distributed delays. Unlike many existing studies, this paper assumes that both types of delays are bounded and continuous, without requiring differentiability. Additionally, the analysis combines the inequality approach and comparison method, while neither a Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional is constructed nor the finite‐time stability theorem is involved. The finite‐time stability of the addressed networks is then ensured by several suitable algebraic criteria. Some extended results are deduced for networks without considering reaction–diffusion and distributed delays effects as special cases. In this paper, the effects of different designs of pressure vessels on hydrodynamic parameters and the performance of seawater RO systems are investigated using computer simulations. Simulation results showed that designs using pressure vessels with four membranes in two-pass RO systems have a lower energy consumption, 5.29 and 0.33 kWh/m3 for the first and second passes, respectively, than those with two or three membranes. Also, designs No. 4 and No. 10 were the most efficient, 41 and 56% for the first and second passes, respectively, compared to other ones. The first and second passes required a lower permeate and feed pressure when using designs No. 3, No. 6, No. 9, and No. 12 where pressure vessels with two membranes were used. In addition, hybrid designs of two-pass RO systems were found to have the best efficiency and the lowest energy consumption among various other designs. Findings showed that in two-pass RO systems, the first pass consumes more energy than the second pass. Thus, the efficiency of the second pass in all designs of two-pass RO systems is more than the first pass. Active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) is widely used in airborne optoelectronic stabilization platforms due to its minimal reliance on the mathematical model of the controlled object. The extended state observer (ESO) is the core of ADRC, which treats internal parameter variations and external disturbances as total disturbances, observes the disturbances as extended states, and then compensates them into the control loop to eliminate their effects. However, the ESO can only achieve a precise estimation of constant or slowly varying disturbances. When the disturbance is periodically changing, satisfactory results cannot be obtained. In this paper, a generalized high-order extended state observer (GHOESO) is proposed to achieve the precise estimation of known frequency sinusoidal disturbance signals and improve disturbance suppression levels. Through numerical simulations, a traditional ESO and GHOESO are compared in terms of disturbance observation capability and disturbance suppression ability for single and compound disturbances based on our prior knowledge of disturbance frequency. The effectiveness of the proposed GHOESO method is verified. Finally, the algorithm is applied to an airborne optoelectronic stabilization platform for a 1°/1 Hz swing experiment on a space hexapod swing table. This paper studies the folding of square, kirigami-inspired space structures consisting of concentrically arranged modular elements formed by thin shells. Localized elastic folds are introduced in the thin shells and different folding strategies can be obtained by varying the location of the folds and the sequence of imposed rotations. Modeling each modular element with rigid rods connected by revolute joints, numerical simulations of the kinematics of folding are obtained, including constraints that represent folding aids and a gravity offload system. These simulations are used to study two specific packaging schemes, and the folding envelopes of a specific structure are analyzed to identify the scheme that is easier to implement in practice. Accurate identification of structural displacements is important for structural state assessment and performance evaluation. This paper proposes a real-time structural displacement detection model based on computer vision and deep learning. The model consists of three stages: identification, tracking, and displacement resolution. First, the displacement target is identified and tracked by the improved YOLO v7 algorithm and the improved DeepSORT algorithm. Then, the Euclidean distance method based on inverse perspective mapping (IPM-ED) is proposed for the analytical conversion of the displacement. Next, the accuracy and effectiveness of this displacement detection model are evaluated through four groups of bamboo axial compression tests. A comparative analysis is conducted between the IPM-ED displacement analysis method and the commonly used ED displacement analysis method. Finally, the robustness of this method is tested by using a cable breakage test of a cable dome structure as an application case. The research results demonstrate that the maximum average error of the four groups of bamboo displacement tests is only 3.10 mm, and the maximum relative error of peak displacement is only 6.54 mm. The RMSE basically stays around 3.5 mm. The maximum displacement error in the application case is only 4.91 mm, with a maximum MAPE of 4.94%. In addition, the error percentage under the IPM-ED algorithm is basically within 5%, while the error percentage of the ED algorithm is more than 10%. The method in this paper achieves efficient and intelligent identification of structural displacements in a non-contact manner. The proposed method is suitable for environments where the contact displacement sensor is easily affected by vibration, the site is complex and requires additional displacement sensor fixing equipment, the displacement sensor with super-high structure is unsafe to deploy, and the contact displacement sensor in narrow space is inconvenient to deploy, so it has broad application prospects. The regularized lattice Boltzmann method (RLBM) has the advantage of improving the accuracy of numerical simulations without increasing the computational overhead. The RLBM usually uses the standard Cartesian grid in numerical simulation. This paper introduces the multi-layer grid technique, the multi-layer grid has different resolutions, which is also more consistent with the physical laws of the flow field. Based on this, a multi-layer grid regularized lattice Boltzmann method (ML-RLBM) for solving complex flow problems is proposed. The proposed method performs local refinement of the grid on the standard Cartesian grid to achieve a multi-layer grid, which can reduce the computational overhead. In order to realize the local grid refinement easily, this paper adopts the center point format to store the multi-layer grid. The ML-RLBM designs a buffer scheme between different layers of grids, which realizes that only spatial interpolation is required at the interface of different layers of grids without temporal interpolation. Although paper-based analysis is known for centuries, only during the last decade this simple substrate became an object of detailed microfluidic studies. In order to obtain optimum performance and separation of the analytes in a microfluidic channel, devices should be optimized, both in terms of architecture and paper properties. Enzyme immobilization methods can not only increase the storage stability but also have an impact on the flow in paper matrix, providing additional charges, and changing the porous structure of paper. Therefore it should be guaranteed that the method of choice will not obstruct the flux in the final device. Paper-based device proposed in this study was composed of a bioactive channel, Pt working electrode, pencil drawn pseudo-reference electrode, a buffer filled sponge providing the wicking solution and a stack of wicking pads to guarantee continuous flow. Based on our previous research we chose 4 methods of enzyme immobilization relying on different phenomena (adsorption, covalent linkage, layer-by-layer, capsules). Different channel architectures were also evaluated in order to achieve optimum time of the enzymatic reaction, separation of peaks and the time of measurement. Experimental results were compared with computer simulations. Final device could quantify glucose (2.0-10.0 mmol L−1) and uric acid (0.1-1.2 mmol L−1) in their clinical range with good repeatability. Abstract: We study the oscillatory dynamics in the generic three-species rock–paper–scissors games with mutations. In the mean-field limit, different behaviors are found: (a) for high mutation rate, there is a stable interior fixed point with coexistence of all species; (b) for low mutation rates, there is a region of the parameter space characterized by a limit cycle resulting from a Hopf bifurcation; (c) in the absence of mutations, there is a region where heteroclinic cycles yield oscillations of large amplitude (not robust against noise). After a discussion on the main properties of the mean-field dynamics, we investigate the stochastic version of the model within an individual-based formulation. Demographic fluctuations are therefore naturally accounted and their effects are studied using a diffusion theory complemented by numerical simulations. It is thus shown that persistent erratic oscillations (quasi-cycles) of large amplitude emerge from a noise-induced resonance phenomenon. Ridesharing is an effective approach to alleviate traffic congestion. In most existing works, drivers and passengers are assigned prices without considering the constraints of desired benefits. This paper investigates ridesharing by formulating a matching and pricing problem to maximize the total payoff of drivers, with the constraints of desired benefit and quality of experience. An efficient algorithm is proposed to solve the formulated problem based on coalitional double auction. Secondary pricing based strategy and sacrificed minimum bid based strategy are proposed to support the algorithm. This paper also proves that the proposed algorithm can achieve a Nash-stable coalition partition in finite steps, and the proposed two strategies guarantee truthfulness, individually rational and budget balance. Extensive simulation results on the real-world dataset of taxi trajectory in Beijing city show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing ones, in terms of average total payoff of drivers while meeting the benefits of passengers.
