The survival prediction of children undergoing hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation is essential for successful transplantation. However, the performance of current algorithms for predicting mortality in this patient group has not improved over recent decades. This paper proposes a new feature selection technique for survival prediction problems using the Mud Ring Algorithm (MRA). Experiments and tests were initially performed on 13 real datasets with varying occurrences to compare the suggested algorithm with other algorithms. After that, the constructed model classification performance was compared to other techniques using the bone marrow transplant children's dataset. Modern techniques were used to acquire their classification results, which were then compared to the suggested outcomes using a variety of well-known metrics, graphical tools, and diagnostic analysis. This investigation has demonstrated that our suggested approach is comparable and outperformed other methods in terms of results. Detecting transformer faults is critical to avoid the undesirable loss of transformers from service and ensure utility service continuity. Transformer faults diagnosis can be determined based on dissolved gas analysis (DGA). The DGA traditional techniques, such as Duval triangle, Key gas, Rogers' ratio, Dornenburg, and IEC code 60599, suffer from poor transformer faults diagnosis. Therefore, recent research has been developed to diagnose transformer fault and the diagnostic accuracy using combined traditional methods of DGA with artificial intelligence and optimization methods. This paper used a novel meta-heuristic technique, based on Gravitational Search and Dipper Throated Optimization Algorithms (GSDTO), to enhance the transformer faults' diagnostic accuracy, which was considered a novelty in this work to reduce the misinterpretation of the transformer faults. The robustness of the constructed GSDTO-based model was addressed by the statistical study using Wilcoxon's rank-sum and ANOVA tests. With the development of artificial intelligence, big data classification technology provides the advantageous help for the medicine auxiliary diagnosis research. While due to the different conditions in the different sample collection, the medical big data is often imbalanced. The class-imbalance problem has been reported as a serious obstacle to the classification performance of many standard learning algorithms. SMOTE algorithm could be used to generate sample points randomly to improve imbalance rate, but its application is affected by the marginalization generation and blindness of parameter selection. Focusing on this problem, an improved SMOTE algorithm based on Normal distribution is proposed in this paper, so that the new sample points are distributed closer to the center of the minority sample with a higher probability to avoid the marginalization of the expanded data. Experiments show that the classification effect is better when use proposed algorithm to expand the imbalanced dataset of Pima, WDBC, WPBC, Ionosphere and Breast-cancer-wisconsin than the original SMOTE algorithm. In addition, the parameter selection of the proposed algorithm is analyzed and it is found that the classification effect is the best when the distribution characteristics of the original data was maintained best by selecting appropriate parameters in our designed experiments. This paper proposes a mixture regression model-based method for drug sensitivity prediction. The proposed method explicitly addresses two fundamental issues in drug sensitivity prediction, namely, population heterogeneity and feature selection pertaining to each of the subpopulations. The mixture regression model is estimated using the imputation-conditional consistency algorithm, and the resulting estimator is consistent. This paper also proposes an average-BIC criterion for determining the number of components for the mixture regression model. The proposed method is applied to the CCLE dataset, and the numerical results indicate that the proposed method can make a drastic improvement over the existing ones, such as random forest, support vector regression, and regularized linear regression, in both drug sensitivity prediction and feature selection. Filter or screening methods are often used as a preprocessing step for reducing the number of variables used by a learning algorithm in obtaining a classification or regression model. While there are many such filter methods, there is a need for an objective evaluation of these methods. Such an evaluation is needed to compare them with each other and also to answer whether they are at all useful, or a learning algorithm could do a better job without them. For this purpose, many popular screening methods are partnered in this paper with three regression learners and five classification learners and evaluated on ten real datasets to obtain accuracy criteria such as R-square and area under the ROC curve (AUC). The obtained results are compared through curve plots and comparison tables in order to find out whether screening methods help improve the performance of learning algorithms and how they fare with each other. Our findings revealed that the screening methods were useful in improving the prediction of the best learner on two regression and two classification datasets out of the ten datasets evaluated. High dimensional biomedical data contain tens of thousands of features, accurate and effective identification of the core features in these data can be used to assist diagnose related diseases. However, there are often a large number of irrelevant or redundant features in biomedical data, which seriously affect subsequent classification accuracy and machine learning efficiency. To solve this problem, a novel filter feature selection algorithm based on redundant removal (FSBRR) is proposed to classify high dimensional biomedical data in this paper. First of all, two redundant criteria are determined by vertical relevance (the relationship between feature and class attribute) and horizontal relevance (the relationship between feature and feature). Secondly, to quantify redundant criteria, an approximate redundancy feature framework based on mutual information (MI) is defined to remove redundant and irrelevant features. To evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm, controlled trials based on typical feature selection algorithm are conducted using three different classifiers, and the experimental results indicate that the FSBRR algorithm can effectively reduce the feature dimension and improve the classification accuracy. In addition, an experiment of small sample dataset is designed and conducted in the section of discussion and analysis to clarify the specific implementation process of FSBRR algorithm more clearly. Feature selection and classification are the main topics in microarray data analysis. Although many feature selection methods have been proposed and developed in this field, SVM-RFE (Support Vector Machine based on Recursive Feature Elimination) is proved as one of the best feature selection methods, which ranks the features (genes) by training support vector machine classification model and selects key genes combining with recursive feature elimination strategy. The principal drawback of SVM-RFE is the huge time consumption. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a more efficient implementation of linear support vector machines and improve the recursive feature elimination strategy and then combine them together to select informative genes. Besides, we propose a simple resampling method to preprocess the datasets, which makes the information distribution of different kinds of samples balanced and the classification results more credible. Moreover, the applicability of four common classifiers is also studied in this paper. Extensive experiments are conducted on six most frequently used microarray datasets in this field, and the results show that the proposed methods have not only reduced the time consumption greatly but also obtained comparable classification performance. Cost-sensitive feature selection learning is an important preprocessing step in machine learning and data mining. Recently, most existing cost-sensitive feature selection algorithms are heuristic algorithms, which evaluate the importance of each feature individually and select features one by one. Obviously, these algorithms do not consider the relationship among features. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for minimal cost feature selection called the rough sets and Laplacian score based cost-sensitive feature selection. The importance of each feature is evaluated by both rough sets and Laplacian score. Compared with heuristic algorithms, the proposed algorithm takes into consideration the relationship among features with locality preservation of Laplacian score. We select a feature subset with maximal feature importance and minimal cost when cost is undertaken in parallel, where the cost is given by three different distributions to simulate different applications. Different from existing cost-sensitive feature selection algorithms, our algorithm simultaneously selects out a predetermined number of “good” features. Extensive experimental results show that the approach is efficient and able to effectively obtain the minimum cost subset. A major issue of machinery fault diagnosis using vibration signals is that it is over-reliant on personnel knowledge and experience in interpreting the signal. Thus, machine learning has been adapted for machinery fault diagnosis. The quantity and quality of the input features, however, influence the fault classification performance. Feature selection plays a vital role in selecting the most representative feature subset for the machine learning algorithm. In contrast, the trade-off relationship between capability when selecting the best feature subset and computational effort is inevitable in the wrapper-based feature selection (WFS) method. This paper proposes an improved WFS technique before integration with a support vector machine (SVM) model classifier as a complete fault diagnosis system for a rolling element bearing case study. The bearing vibration dataset made available by the Case Western Reserve University Bearing Data Centre was executed using the proposed WFS and its performance has been analysed and discussed. The results reveal that the proposed WFS secures the best feature subset with a lower computational effort by eliminating the redundancy of re-evaluation. Since the importance of DNA-binding proteins in multiple biomolecular functions has been recognized, an increasing number of researchers are attempting to identify DNA-binding proteins. In recent years, the machine learning methods have become more and more compelling in the case of protein sequence data soaring, because of their favorable speed and accuracy. In this paper, we extract three features from the protein sequence, namely NMBAC (Normalized Moreau-Broto Autocorrelation), PSSM-DWT (Position-specific scoring matrix—Discrete Wavelet Transform), and PSSM-DCT (Position-specific scoring matrix—Discrete Cosine Transform). We also employ feature selection algorithm on these feature vectors. Then, these features are fed into the training SVM (support vector machine) model as classifier to predict DNA-binding proteins. Our method applys three datasets, namely PDB1075, PDB594 and PDB186, to evaluate the performance of our approach. The PDB1075 and PDB594 datasets are employed for Jackknife test and the PDB186 dataset is used for the independent test. Our method achieves the best accuracy in the Jacknife test, from 79.20% to 86.23% and 80.5% to 86.20% on PDB1075 and PDB594 datasets, respectively. In the independent test, the accuracy of our method comes to 76.3%. We live in a period when smart devices gather a large amount of data from a variety of sensors and it is often the case that decisions are taken based on them in a more or less autonomous manner. Still, many of the inputs do not prove to be essential in the decision-making process; hence, it is of utmost importance to find the means of eliminating the noise and concentrating on the most influential attributes. In this sense, we put forward a method based on the swarm intelligence paradigm for extracting the most important features from several datasets. The thematic of this paper is a novel implementation of an algorithm from the swarm intelligence branch of the machine learning domain for improving feature selection. The combination of machine learning with the metaheuristic approaches has recently created a new branch of artificial intelligence called learnheuristics. This approach benefits both from the capability of feature selection to find the solutions that most impact on accuracy and performance, as well as the well known characteristic of swarm intelligence algorithms to efficiently comb through a large search space of solutions. The latter is used as a wrapper method in feature selection and the improvements are significant. In this paper, a modified version of the salp swarm algorithm for feature selection is proposed. This solution is verified by 21 datasets with the classification model of K-nearest neighborhoods. Furthermore, the performance of the algorithm is compared to the best algorithms with the same test setup resulting in better number of features and classification accuracy for the proposed solution. Feature selection is a practical approach for improving the performance of text classification methods by optimizing the feature subsets input to classifiers. In traditional feature selection methods such as information gain and chi-square, the number of documents that contain a particular term (i.e. the document frequency) is often used. However, the frequency of a given term appearing in each document has not been fully investigated, even though it is a promising feature to produce accurate classifications. In this paper, we propose a new feature selection scheme based on a term event Multinomial naive Bayes probabilistic model. According to the model assumptions, the matching score function, which is based on the prediction probability ratio, can be factorized. Finally, we derive a feature selection measurement for each term after replacing inner parameters by their estimators. On a benchmark English text datasets (20 Newsgroups) and a Chinese text dataset (MPH-20), our numerical experiment results obtained from using two widely used text classifiers (naive Bayes and support vector machine) demonstrate that our method outperformed the representative feature selection methods. This paper proposes a new support vector machine (SVM) optimization scheme based on an improved chaotic fly optimization algorithm (FOA) with a mutation strategy to simultaneously perform parameter setting turning for the SVM and feature selection. In the improved FOA, the chaotic particle initializes the fruit fly swarm location and replaces the expression of distance for the fruit fly to find the food source. However, the proposed mutation strategy uses two distinct generative mechanisms for new food sources at the osphresis phase, allowing the algorithm procedure to search for the optimal solution in both the whole solution space and within the local solution space containing the fruit fly swarm location. In an evaluation based on a group of ten benchmark problems, the proposed algorithm’s performance is compared with that of other well-known algorithms, and the results support the superiority of the proposed algorithm. Moreover, this algorithm is successfully applied in a SVM to perform both parameter setting turning for the SVM and feature selection to solve real-world classification problems. Abstract: This paper presents a core vector machine (CVM)-based algorithm for on-line voltage security assessment of power systems. To classify the system security status, a CVM has been trained for each contingency. The proposed CVM-based security assessment has very small training time and space in comparison with support vector machines (SVM) and artificial neural networks (ANNs)-based algorithms. The proposed algorithm produces less support vectors (SV) and therefore is faster than existing algorithms. In this paper, a new decision tree (DT)-based feature selection technique has been presented, too. The proposed CVM algorithm has been applied to New England 39-bus power system. A cascade face detector uses a sequence of node classifiers to distinguish faces from nonfaces. This paper presents a new approach to design node classifiers in the cascade detector. Previous methods used machine learning algorithms that simultaneously select features and form ensemble classifiers. We argue that if these two parts are decoupled, we have the freedom to design a classifier that explicitly addresses the difficulties caused by the asymmetric learning goal. There are three contributions in this paper: The first is a categorization of asymmetries in the learning goal and why they make face detection hard. The second is the Forward Feature Selection (FFS) algorithm and a fast precomputing strategy for AdaBoost. FFS and the fast AdaBoost can reduce the training time by approximately 100 and 50 times, in comparison to a naive implementation of the AdaBoost feature selection method. The last contribution is a Linear Asymmetric Classifier (LAC), a classifier that explicitly handles the asymmetric learning goal as a well-defined constrained optimization problem. In protein tertiary structure prediction, assessing the quality of predicted models is an essential task. Over the past years, many methods have been proposed for the protein model quality assessment (QA) and selection problem. Despite significant advances, the discerning power of current methods is still unsatisfactory. In this paper, we propose two new algorithms, CC-Select and MDS-QA, based on multidimensional scaling and k-means clustering. For the model selection problem, CC-Select combines consensus with clustering techniques to select the best models from a given pool. Given a set of predicted models, CC-Select first calculates a consensus score for each structure based on its average pairwise structural similarity to other models. Then, similar structures are grouped into clusters using multidimensional scaling and clustering algorithms. In each cluster, the one with the highest consensus score is selected as a candidate model. For the QA problem, MDS-QA combines single-model scoring functions with consensus to determine more accurate assessment score for every model in a given pool. Using extensive benchmark sets of a large collection of predicted models, we compare the two algorithms with existing state-of-the-art quality assessment methods and show significant improvement. Abstract: Automatic communication signal recognition plays an important role for many novel computer and communication technologies. Most of the proposed techniques can only identify a few kinds of digital signal and/or low order of them. They usually require high levels of signal to noise ratio (SNR). In this paper, we investigate twofold. First, we propose an efficient system that uses a combination set of spectral characteristics and higher order moments up to eighth and higher order cumulants up to eighth as the effective features. As the classifier we used a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network. In this stage we investigate different learning algorithms of MLP neural networks that some of them, such as quick prop (QP) learning algorithm, extended delta-bar-delta (EDBD), super self adaptive back propagation (SuperSAB) and conjugate gradient (CG) are proposed for the first time in the area of communication signals recognition. Experimental results show that proposed system discriminates a lot of digital communication signals with high accuracy even at very low SNRs. But a lot of features are used for this recognition. Then at the second fold, in order to reduce the complexity of the recognizer, we have proposed a novel hybrid intelligent technique. In this technique we have optimized the classifier design by Bees Algorithm (BA) for selection of the best features that are fed to the classifier. Abstract: In this paper, we propose a meta-evolutionary approach to improve on the performance of individual classifiers. In the proposed system, individual classifiers evolve, competing to correctly classify test points, and are given extra rewards for getting difficult points right. Ensembles consisting of multiple classifiers also compete for member classifiers, and are rewarded based on their predictive performance. In this way we aim to build small-sized optimal ensembles rather than form large-sized ensembles of individually-optimized classifiers. Experimental results on 15 data sets suggest that our algorithms can generate ensembles that are more effective than single classifiers and traditional ensemble methods. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

There are numerous combinations of neural networks (NNs) and evolutionary algorithms (EAs) used in classification problems. EAs have been used to train the networks, design their architecture, and select feature subsets. However, most of these combinations have been tested on only a few data sets and many comparisons are done inappropriately measuring the performance on training data or without using proper statistical tests to support the conclusions. This paper presents an empirical evaluation of eight combinations of EAs and NNs on 15 public-domain and artificial data sets. Our objective is to identify the methods that consistently produce accurate classifiers that generalize well. In most cases, the combinations of EAs and NNs perform equally well on the data sets we tried and were not more accurate than hand-designed neural networks trained with simple backpropagation. Feature selection is a difficult but important issue in the field of machine learning and pattern recognition. In this paper, features for Chinese character recognition are selected by using inductive learning algorithms. The existing inductive learning method based on extension matrix requires precise consistency between positive example and negative example sets, which is very difficult to maintain in most practical cases. The traditional decision tree algorithm ID3 considers only the performance of the discriminating power while selecting features. However, in actual practice the consideration of the associated cost of feature extraction may become a significant concern. In addressing these problems we propose a modified extension matrix approach to select feature subset from the training example set with noises. A decision tree algorithm based on information gain and cost evaluation is also proposed to facilitate cost consideration. This paper presents feature selection algorithms for multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) and multiclass support vector machines (SVMs), using mutual information between class labels and classifier outputs, as an objective function. This objective function involves inexpensive computation of information measures only on discrete variables; provides immunity to prior class probabilities; and brackets the probability of error of the classifier. The maximum output information (MOl) algorithms employ this function for feature subset selection by greedy elimination and directed search. The output of the MOI algorithms is a feature subset of user-defined size and an associated trained classifier (MLP/SVM).
