Abstract: Earth heat exchangers are essential parts of the ground-source heat pumps and the accurate prediction of their performance is of fundamental importance. This paper presents the development and validation of a numerical model for the simulation of energy flows and temperature changes in and around a borehole heat exchanger when a fluid circulates through a U-tube. Based on the time-dependent convection–diffusion equation, the FlexPDE software package is employed to solve the resulting boundary value problem that model a heat exchanger. First, the mathematical model is validated through a comparison with data obtained from experiments with real borehole set-ups in Cyprus. Then the validated model is used to study the heat flow and the temperature variation in the heat-exchanger. Finally conclusions are extracted on how various parameters like the U-tube diameter, the variation of the ground thermal conductivity and specific heat and the borehole filling material affect the temperature of the inlet and outlet fluid. The authors here extend a 0D-1D thermofluid dynamic simulation approach to describe the phenomena internal to the volumetric machines, reproducing pressure waves' propagation in the ducts. This paper reports the first analysis of these phenomena in a reciprocating compressor. The first part presents a detailed experimental analysis of an open-type reciprocating compressor equipped with internal sensors. The second part describes a 0D-1D thermofluid dynamic simulation of the compressor. Comparison of computed and measured values of discharge mass flow rate shows a good agreement between results for compression ratio ß < 5. Then, to improve the model fitting at higher pressures, a new scheme has been developed to predict the blow-by through the ring pack volumes. This model is based on a series of volumes and links which simulate the rings' motions inside the grooves, while the ring dynamics are imposed using data from the literature about blow-by in internal combustion engines. The validation is obtained comparing experimental and computing data of the two cylinder engine blowby. After the validation, a new comparison of mass flow rate on the compressor shows a better fitting of the curves at higher compression ratio. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper presents a meanline model to predict the performance parameters of a turbocharger turbine under steady state conditions. The turbine was developed at Imperial College and the design was based on a commercial nozzleless unit that was modified into a variable geometry single-entry turbine. The wide range of tests data from the Imperial College Turbocharger Group dynamometer enabled the evaluation of the model in the areas of the turbine map where currently no previous comparison had been made in the literature. This facility is designed to allow testing over a wide range of velocity ratios (0.3–1.1) previously unavailable with conventional test stands. The nozzleless turbine model was validated against experimental results spanning an equivalent speed range of 27.9 and 53.8rev/s√K while for the nozzled case the model was validated against one single speed (43.0rev/s√K) and three different vane angle settings (40°, 60° and 70°). The results of the model simulation showed that the performance can be predicted with excellent accuracy for different turbine speeds and vane angles. Based on the model prediction, a breakdown aerodynamic loss was performed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper compares several medium-voltage power conversion systems for plasma torch application. The thermal plasma torch rated for 3 MW, 2 kA with the physical size of 1 m long is selected. The dynamic characteristics of the dc arc in a plasma torch are investigated using advanced 3-D magnetohydrodynamics simulation. The arc voltage noise of ±10% due to the periodic pressure wave is modeled as a sawtooth waveform in arc power loss term. The parameters of the Cassie-Mayr arc model are calculated based on 3-D simulation. A 12-pulse thyristor rectifier and two-phase staggered three-level step-down dc-dc converter having 12-pulse front-end diode rectifier are compared under the same dynamic operating condition. The three-level dc-dc converter has superior dynamic performance over the 12-pulse thyristor rectifier under the existence of arc disturbance noise. This power converter topology provides higher ignition voltage around 5 kV during ignition phase and higher arc stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
