A pneumonia outbreak was primarily reported in the fall of 2019 in Wuhan, Hubei province, China, with the identity SARS-CoV-2, a novel coronavirus. It quickly grew from a local epidemic to a global pandemic and was declared a public health emergency by the WHO. A total of three prominent waves were identified across the globe, with a slight temporal variability as per the geographical locations, and has impacted several sectors which connect the world. By March 2022, the coronavirus had infected 444.12 million people and claimed 6.01 million human lives worldwide, and these numbers have not yet stabilized. Our paper enlightens readers on the seven strains of human coronaviruses, with special emphasis on the three severe deadliest outbreaks (SARS-2002, MERS-2012, and COVID-19). This work attempts a comprehensive understanding of the coronavirus and its impact on the possible sectors that link the world through the economic chain, climate conditions, SDGs, recycling of the event, and mitigations. There are many points that are raised by the authors in the possible sectors, which are emerging or are as yet unnoticed and thus have not been taken into consideration. This comprehension will leave sets of new challenges and opportunities for the researchers in various streams, especially in earth sciences. Vegetation coverage in catchment has a direct impact on its ecological environment, and monitoring vegetation coverage change and its determinants is important to reconstruct effectively ecological engineering projects to sustain economic development without compromising ecological environment. Danjiangkou Reservoir is a waterhead at the middle route of the South-North Water Transfer Project in China, and its ecological environment has a direct impact on quality and quantity of the water in the transferring cannel. Available study on vegetation coverage change in this area is problematic, including short experiment duration and inadequate evaluation of the impact of the human activities. We address this knowledge gap in this paper using data extracted from GIMMS NDVI and MODIS NDVI. The empirical orthogonal teleconnection (EOT) algorithm was used to reconstruct the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from 1982 to 2018, from which we analyzed the spatiotemporal change in the vegetation coverage and individual contribution of climate factors and human activities to the vegetation coverage changes. The results revealed that NDVI showed an oscillating increase from 1982 to 2018 at an average rate of 0.002 9 /a (P<0.05). Spatially, 89.93% of the studied areas saw a first-year increase in NDVI, and 10.06% witnessed a first-year decrease. Temperature impacted on NDVI most with a correlation coefficient of 0.792 (P<0.05), followed by precipitation with a correlation coefficient of - 0.43 (P<0.05). The influence of climate factors on vegetation coverage varied spatially. In mountainous areas, vegetation growth was affected by precipitation and temperature combined, while in basins and river valleys characterized by low and flat terrain, NDVI was positively correlated with temperature and negatively with precipitation, both at significant level. Human activities impacted on vegetation coverage in two opposite ways. On the one hand, human activity in 67.74% of the studied areas had a positive effect on vegetation coverage due to engineering measures being taken to restore and improve ecological functions of these area. On the other hand, human activity in 32.26% of the studies areas had a detrimental impact on vegetation coverage due to unsustainable activities used in social-economic development. The impacts of climate and human activities on regional vegetation coverage were separated by the residual method, and the results indicated that overall contribution of the climate factors to the vegetation coverage change was 92.14%, compared to the 7.86% from the human activities. Spatially, in areas with more human activities, such as areas that had taken ecological measures or in the proximity of central city, human activities have been becoming the determinants of the NDVI change. [Display omitted] • A numerical model is proposed for seasonal thermal energy storage (STES) couple with solar collector. • The model is featured as relatively high computational speed and accuracy. • An analysis on technical planning and operational design for the STES is offered. • The key parameters for system design and control are investigated with instructive results. Seasonal thermal energy storage (STES) systems are a key component in expanding the share of renewables in energy programs because they provide schedulability and flexibility. However, such a large-scale system requires careful planning to avoid high investment costs. Therefore, numerical models are becoming increasingly important as an alternative. This paper develops a numerical model of STES coupled with solar collector. The model was verified based on the experimental data of the Huangdicheng Project in China. The results show that the relative error in the charging mode and discharging mode is only 1.57 % and 0.46 %, respectively. Then, the effects of different charging and discharging mode on the heat storage efficiency of the tank and the efficiency of solar collector systems in STES were studied. The study found that in the initial charging stage, the water temperature rise curve caused by different flow rates is very different. In the design of the collector-storage area ratio, the relatively economical collector-storage ratio of this model is around 3768 L/m2. The selection of different proportions of discharging energy in the discharge stage has a great impact on the heat storage efficiency of the system in the next year. Moreover, the influence of different depth-diameter ratios of the tank on the system heat storage efficiency is discussed in detail, which has important guiding significance for model application and system analysis. As a powerful dynasty ruling northern China from 386 to 534 CE, the Northern Wei dynasty unexpectedly moved its capital from Pingcheng to Luoyang in 494 CE. This move has great significance in Chinese history, and the reasons for it have aroused intense and long-lasting controversy. To explore the environmental factors underlying this event, this study focuses on the impact of natural disasters on Pingcheng in the fifth century based on continuous high-resolution paleoclimatic data combined with extensive historical records. It finds that Pingcheng experienced a significant decline in the late 470s CE as a result of continuous droughts and a low-temperature environment. Moreover, it is argued that the rapid growth of the population in Pingcheng might have increased its societal vulnerability to natural disasters. By comparing the food systems and geographical locations of Pingcheng and Luoyang, this study suggests that the relocation of the capital should be considered as an adaptation to climate change and a mitigation of its effects by the Northern Wei dynasty. Mineral-associated organic carbon (MOC), that is stabilized by fine soil particles (i.e., silt plus clay, <53 μm), is important for soil organic carbon (SOC) persistence and sequestration, due to its large contribution to total SOC (TSOC) and long turnover time. Our objectives were to investigate how climate, soil type, soil texture, and agricultural managements affect MOC contributions to TSOC in China. We created a dataset from 103 published papers, including 1106 data points pairing MOC and TSOC across three major land use types: cropland, grassland, and forest. Overall, the MOC/TSOC ratio ranged from 0.27 to 0.80 and varied significantly among soil groups in cropland, grassland, and forest. Croplands and forest exhibited significantly higher median MOC/TSOC ratios than in grassland. Moreover, forest and grassland soils in temperate regions had higher MOC/TSOC ratios than in subtropical regions. Furthermore, the MOC/TSOC ratio was much higher in ultisol, compared with the other soil types. Both the MOC content and MOC/TSOC ratio were positively correlated with the amount of fine fraction (silt plus clay) in soil, highlighting the importance of soil texture in stabilizing organic carbon across various climate zones. In cropland, different fertilization practices and land uses (e.g., upland, paddy, and upland-paddy rotation) significantly altered MOC/TSOC ratios, but not in cropping systems (e.g., mono- and double-cropping) characterized by climatic differences. This study demonstrates that the MOC/TSOC ratio is mainly driven by soil texture, soil types, and related climate and land uses, and thus the variations in MOC/TSOC ratios should be taken into account when quantitatively estimating soil C sequestration potential of silt plus clay particles on a large scale. Potash deposits commonly accumulate in highly restricted settings at the final stage of brine evaporation. This does not mean that potash deposits are formed simply as a result of the evaporation concentration of seawater or lake water, but rather as a coupling result of particular provenance, tectonics and climate activities. In this paper, we focus on the formative mechanism of the potash deposits of Lop Nur depression in Tarim Basin to interpret the detailed coupling mechanism among provenance, tectonics and climate. In terms of the provenance of Lop Nur Lake, the water of the Tarim River which displays 'potassium-rich' characteristics play an important role. In addition, the Pliocene and Lower-Middle Pleistocene clastic beds surrounding Lop Nur Lake host a certain amount of soluble potassium and thus serves as 'source beds' for potash formation. During the late Pliocene, the Lop Nur region has declined and evolved into a great lake from the previous piedmont and diluvial fan area. Since the mid Pleistocene, the great-united Lop Nur Lake has been separated and has generated a chain system consisting of Taitema Lake, Big Ear Lake and Luobei Lake which has turned into the deepest sag in Lop Nur Lake. Dry climate in Lop Nur region has increased since the Pliocene, and became extreme at the late Pleistocene. The study implies that potash formation in Lop Nur Lake depends on the optimal combination of extreme components of provenance, tectonics and climate during a shorter-term period. The optimal patterns of three factors are generally characterized by the long-term accumulation and preliminary enrichment of potassium, the occurrence of the deepest sub-depression and the appearance of an extremely arid climate in Lop Nur region. These factors have been interacting synergistically since the forming of the saline lake and in the later stages strong 'vapor extraction' caused by extremely arid climate is needed to trigger large scale mineralization of potash deposits. Based on compilation of a large number of archaeological and palaeosol 14C-ages, the Summed Probability Method is used to reconstruct population history and climatic patterns on the Chinese Loess Plateau during the period 8.5–3.5 cal. ka BP. During this period, the population experienced two major expansion periods and several climatic fluctuations. The first population expansion began at around 7.8 cal. ka BP, and the second at around 5.8 cal. ka BP. During the first period, although already in combination with cultivation of broomcorn millet the population growth was supported mainly by hunting and gathering. With the switch from broomcorn millet to foxtail millet, plant cultivation became the major factor promoting a second population increase. In this paper, we demonstrate that, initially, suitable climate and agriculture both can facilitate population growth and climate events had a significant influence on demographic fluctuations. As one of the most intensively eroded regions worldwide, soil erosion assessment is currently gaining further momentum in the Loess Plateau (LP), China. However, there exist very few review studies that assess soil erosion in relation to land use and land cover (LULC), climate, and ecosystem services (ESs) at multiple temporal and spatial scales in the LP. Thus, this review provides a comprehensive review of the interactions among soil erosion assessment, climate change, LULC change, and ESs at different scales. We focused on the academic literature published in the English language and analyzed the coverage of soil erosion across 109 publications. Our results highlighted three aspects: (1) studies dealing with the effects of LULC change on soil erosion are abundant. A recent surge in research interest is to explore a threshold of vegetation cover to support a sustainable eco-hydrological environment in the LP. However, the impacts of multiple stressors on soil erosion have received limited attention. (2) The short-term soil erosion assessment dominated the published studies. Cross-spatial-scale and long-term erosion assessments have received little attention. (3) 43% of reviewed papers used a field measurement method to assess soil erosion with the validation of measurement methods. 41% of reviewed papers used empirical models to assess soil erosion, but the modeling validation remains an unsolved problem. Then, three recommendations are listed as follows: (1) the combined impacts of LULC and climate change on soil erosion need to be further examined. (2) Long-term and cross-spatial-scale soil erosion assessments need to be established. In this paper, we present a δ13C record that covers the past 750 years at a resolution of 2 - 3 years which was preserved in a precisely dated stalagmite (DY-1) obtained from the Dayu Cave on the south flank of the Qinling Mountains in central China. Between 1249 AD and 1800 AD, climate-induced vegetation changes appear to have been the primary control on δ13C values at a centennial scale. Variations in precipitation amounts control the residence time of seepage water and may have affected the dissolution of bedrock, prior carbonate precipitation in the unsaturated zone above the cave, and the degassing of CO2 within the cave. These hydrogeochemical processes are likely to have been the most important controls on δ13C levels over annual to decadal scales, and may also have influenced centennial-scale variations. The reduced δ13C value of atmospheric CO2 since the Industrial Revolution may have caused the decreasing trend in δ13C values seen in stalagmite DY-1 after 1800 AD. Increased visitor numbers in the unventilated Dayu Cave over time produced a large amount of CO2, and maintained a raised level of pCO2 in the cave air. This artificially enhanced pCO2 may have decreased the fraction of CO2 degassing, and hence carbonate precipitation, which could partly cause the decreasing trend in the stalagmite δ13C seen over the past 200 years. Abstract: A cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBEs) is a promising final cover for controlling water infiltration into a waste containment system. A CCBE consisting of a layer of fine soil and a layer of coarse soil relies on the particle size contrast of the two soils. Although CCBEs have been successfully used in dry climate, their performance under high precipitation intensities and high evaporation conditions (e.g., in South China) is still unclear. This paper aims to evaluate the performance of the CCBE in high-precipitation areas and propose appropriate combinations of local soils for constructing a CCBE in South China. Several combinations of lean clay, clayed sand, and silty sand with gravel are examined using saturated/unsaturated seepage analysis. Two contrasting conditions, i.e., a drizzle lasting for a long time and an intense storm lasting for a short time, are applied to the covers. The covers perform well when subject to prolonged small rainfall at an initial maximum suction of 150kPa. When subject to a short-time heavy rainfall, breakthrough occurs in the cover consisting of clayed sand overlying silty sand with gravel. Of the three covers, a CCBE consisting of lean clay overlying silty sand with gravel performs well under both prolonged light rainfall and short time heavy rainfall conditions. This CCBE has the longest period of time before breakthrough and the least amount of percolated water under prolonged heavy rainfall. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In the regions surrounding the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, changes in erosion rates have been linked to the tectonics, climate and topography over different time scales. To understand the mechanisms governing the changes of erosion rates, it is important to study erosion rates by different methods and for different time scales. In inland drainage basins, deposition rates of terminal lake sediments can indicate basin-wide erosion rates at the millennial-scale. This paper presents three lake records of the Last Deglaciation and Holocene (Huahai Lake, Zhuye Lake and Yanchi Lake) from the Hexi Corridor, north of the Qilian Mountains, in arid China. Organic matter, terrestrial pollen concentrates, seeds, grasses and plant debris are used for conventional and AMS 14C dating. On the basis of 66 radiocarbon dates, lithology and grain-size, we infer relatively high basin-wide erosion rates during the Last Deglaciation and early Holocene in the three drainage basins, when the three lake sediments were seriously affected by reworking. The deposition rates were an order of magnitude or greater in these lakes during the Last Deglaciation and early Holocene than during the mid-to-late Holocene. During the transition period of the last glacial–interglacial cycle, significant climatic changes occurred in East and Central Asia, corresponding to the strengthening of the Asian summer monsoon and to increasing effective moisture in arid Central Asia, which can have strong impacts on basin-wide erosion rates north of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau. Moreover, melting glaciers in the Qilian Mountains probably also contributed to the high basin-wide erosion rates. At the same time, tectonic activity was not recognizable in the study area during that period. In the arid and semiarid regions surrounding the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, dramatic changes in erosion rates appear during the transition periods of the glacial–interglacial cycles, which illustrate the climatic controls on erosion rates at this time scale. Abstract: The earliest evidence of prehistoric religious practice in China found so far comes from excavations at Beifudi, about 120 km south of Beijing, in the form of votive offerings and porcelain sorcery masks dated to the period 8000–7000 yr BP. These finds are part of a rich Neolithic site located on the second river terrace on the north shore of the Yi River. This paper presents results of pollen analysis of part of a sediment profile from a depression at the edge of first terrace towards second terrace, a few hundred metres away from the main archaeological finds. A sequence of marked changes in environment occurred between 9000 cal yr BP and 6000 cal yr BP, and dating evidence suggests strong associations with the ebb and flow of human activity in the area. The first phase of activity on the site begins at around 8000 cal yr BP, towards the end of a period of relatively dry, cold environmental conditions. Between 7800 cal yr BP and 7400 cal yr BP, the first clear evidence of cereal cultivation appears in the pollen record. Rich archaeological finds occur during the same time period, suggesting local prosperity. This first phase of the Beifudi culture ends at 7300 cal yr BP, when warmer and wetter conditions are inferred and wetland areas expand, reducing the area available for crop cultivation near the site. A return to drier and cooler conditions from 6900 cal yr BP corresponds with the second phase of apparent prosperity in the archaeological record from Beifudi. This phase ends at around 6500 cal yr BP, at the start of another shift towards wetter conditions in the flood plain environment. The pollen record suggests that environmental conditions in the flood plain were a major determinant of human activity at Beifudi in the early-mid Holocene. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Climate and tectonism are both particularly intense in the Yarlung Zangbo (Tsangpo) Great Canyon in the eastern Himalayan syntaxis, which is characterized by the most rapid landscape evolution of anywhere in the world. Thus, the eastern Himalayan syntaxis is one of the best locations to study the interactions between climate and tectonics. This paper investigates the cooling ages of the Doxong La-Baibung profile using apatite fission track (AFT) dating on 11 bedrock samples at elevations ranging from 4210 to 710 m. There are topographic, climatic, metamorphic, and thermochronological gradients in the profile, providing good conditions to study interactions between climate and tectonics. AFT ages ranged from 4.6±0.6 Ma to 1.7±0.3 Ma, and the mean fission track lengths ranged from 11.0 to 12.4 µm. It was found that the cooling rates revealed by AFT ages increased with decreasing elevation. However, the tendency of the cooling rates revealed by the 40Ar-39Ar ages was different from that indicated by the AFT ages. Moreover, for most districts of the eastern Himalayan syntaxis, the compiled AFT age distribution correlates well with the annual average precipitation, indicating the coupling of the cooling and erosion rates of the near-surface rock and precipitation. The geothermal history modeling results indicate an obvious increase in the cooling and erosion rate between 1.0 and 0.5 Ma. This age is consistent with other research findings for this time, when the vapor channel of the Yarlung Zangbo Great Canyon began to take effect. These evidences suggest that climate, especially precipitation, has acting as a key factor influencing the rapid cooling and erosion in the Yarlung Zangbo Great Canyon since 1-0.5 Ma. Abstract: The relationships between climate, topography, and erosion are significant in understanding landscape evolution. In order to study this relationship in a tectonically active landscape, the details of 11 drainage basins were collected from Qilian Shan Mountains. Decadal-scale erosion rates, including the mechanical load and solute load contributions, are estimated in natural conditions. The calculated erosion rates show that the average erosion rate of Qilian Shan Mountains is about 0.08mm/yr, while the variation of annual erosion rates within each basin is significant. The changes of topography and climate, which potentially control erosion rates, are also employed in this paper for correlating analyses. Correlation analyses indicate that erosion rates are more closely correlated with topographic variables, such as mean local relief and mean slope, than all of the climatic variables; and mean local relief and decadal-scale erosion rates show a linear relationship in these tectonically active mountains. However, some topographic variables like basin area and elongation ratio exert limited influence on erosion rates; while others, such as basin elevation, basin relief and basin roughness, show poor correlation. The results indicate that topographic control, like aspects of the local terrain steepness, plays the most important role in spatial distribution of decadal-scale erosion rates throughout Qilian Shan Mountains. Under topographic control, some climatic variables, like discharge and runoff, however, could account for the significant variation of annual erosion rates in individual basin. When comparing erosion rates on different timescales, we found that the decadal-scale erosion rates are lower than the long-term river incision rates, as well as the exhumation rates during early and middle Miocene. The change to more arid climatic condition since the middle Miocene combining with tectonic uplift should attribute to the inconsistent erosion rates over different timescales in Qilian Shan Mountains. Abstract: Understanding the sensitivity of soil respiration to temperature change and its impacting factors is an important base for accurately evaluating the response of terrestrial carbon balance to future climatic change, and thus has received much recent attention. In this study, we synthesized 161 field measurement data from 52 published papers to quantify temperature sensitivity of soil respiration in different Chinese ecosystems and its relationship with climate factors, such as temperature and precipitation. The results show that the observed Q 10 value (the factor by which respiration rates increase for a 10°C increase in temperature) is strongly dependent on the soil temperature measurement depth. Generally, Q 10 significantly increased with the depth (0cm, 5cm, and 10cm) of soil temperature measuring point. Different ecosystem types also exhibit different Q 10 values. In response to soil temperature at the depth of 5cm, alpine meadow and tundra has the largest Q 10 value with magnitude of 3.05±1.06, while the Q 10 value of evergreen broadleaf forests is approximately half that amount (Q 10 =1.81±0.43). Spatial correlation analysis also shows that the Q 10 value of forest ecosystems is significantly and negatively correlated with mean annual temperature (R =−0.51, P <0.001) and mean annual precipitation (R =−0.5, P <0.001). This result not only implies that the temperature sensitivity of soil respiration will decline under continued global warming, but also suggests that such acclimation of soil respiration to warming should be taken into account in forecasting future terrestrial carbon cycle and its feedback to climate system. Net primary productivity (NPP) is a key component of energy and matter transformation in the terrestrial ecosystem, and the responses of NPP to global change locally and regionally have been one of the most important aspects in climate-vegetation relationship studies. In order to isolate causal climatic factors, it is very important to assess the response of seasonal variation of NPP to climate. In this paper, NPP in Xinjiang was estimated by NOAA/AVHRR Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data and geographic information system (GIS) techniques. The impact of climatic factors (air temperature, precipitation and sunshine percentage) on seasonal variations of NPP was studied by time lag and serial correlation ageing analysis. The results showed that the NPP for different land cover types have a similar correlation with any one of the three climatic factors, and precipitation is the major climatic factor influencing the seasonal variation of NPP in Xinjiang. It was found that the positive correlation at 0 lag appeared between NPP and precipitation and the serial correlation ageing was 0 d in most areas of Xinjiang, which indicated that the response of NPP to precipitation was immediate. However, NPP of different land cover types showed significant positive correlation at 2 month lag with air temperature, and the impact of which could persist 1 month as a whole. Peatlands are one of the most significant carbon reservoirs in the terrestrial ecosystem. Understanding past peatland carbon accumulation processes and their responses to varying external and internal forcing factors would help reveal the general development patterns of peatland ecosystems and provide useful insights into projecting the fate of carbon reservoirs into the future. In this paper, the basal ages of 17 peat cores were used to explore the lateral expansion processes of the Laolike peatland, northeast China. Two cores were selected to calculate carbon accumulation rates (CAR) and reconstruct moisture/precipitation records based on δ13C and grain size analyses. The basal ages show that the peatland was initiated at 12.1 cal kyr BP, then laterally expanded with its fastest rate occurring during the early Holocene, and reached its largest area around 6 cal kyr BP. The time-weighted mean CAR in the Laolike peatland ranged from 31.1 to 52.9 g C/m2/yr (with an average of 42 g C/m2/yr) during the Holocene. The peatland experienced a high CAR of 52.5 g C/m2/yr from 11.7 to 5 cal kyr BP, followed by a low CAR of 35.1 g C/m2/yr after 5 cal kyr BP. Both lateral expansion and vertical accretion are consistent with the summer insolation, climate seasonality, and the strength of the East Asia summer monsoon (EASM) over multi-millennium timescales, where the CAR correlated well with δ13C and grain size, implying moisture/precipitation might be the primary factors controlling carbon accumulation over millennium timescales. Local conditions, such as topography and hydrology, also played an important role in the process of peatland initiation and lateral expansion, as well as the discrepant CAR within the peatland. This study reveals the roles of climate and local conditions in peatland initiation, expansion, and CAR during the Holocene. The paper explores the use of Resilience Theory to provide an improved theoretical framework for the analysis of socio-ecological interactions over decadal—millennial timescales. It identifies landscape system behaviour through analysis of proxy records for land use, erosion and monsoon intensity over the past 3000 years in the Erhai lake-catchment system, Yunnan, SW China. Analysis of the records shows the possibility of alternative steady states in the landscape, as expressed by the relationship between land use and erosion. In particular, a period of agricultural expansion ~1400 cal. yr BP triggered rapid gully erosion that led to the formation of an eroded landscape state that has existed since ~800 cal. yr BP to the present day. Comparison of detrended time-series data suggests that over 3000 years erosion and land use should be considered 'slow' processes relative to the 'faster' monsoon intensity and flooding. In the past, the effects of high monsoon variance on flooding have been suppressed by paddy farming and the maintenance of terraced field systems. Mapping the Adaptive Cycle on to the millennial record of land use and erosion suggests that the modern landscape may be approaching a 'conservation' phase characterized by minimum resilience. Such 'historical profiling' of modern landscapes offers a new dimension for hypothesis testing, for the development and testing of simulation models and for the creation of appropriate management strategies. In Asia, especially in China, our knowledge of the distribution of testate amoebae is still limited. In this paper, the geographical distribution of testate amoebae in Tibetan Plateau and northwestern Yunnan Plateau, southwest China and their relationships with the climatic factors have been studied. We found testate amoebae shifted in the most dominant species and increased in species (or genus) richness from northwest to southeast. Further, the linear regression analyses revealed that both species richness and genus richness have higher positive correlations with the mean temperature of the warmest month and annual mean precipitation as contrasted with the mean altitude, which showed weak negative correlation. This indicates that the temperature and precipitation are more significant influences on the richness than the altitude. The cluster analysis based on the community structure, defined by Sørenson’s coefficient matrix, suggested four groups from the 10 physiographical regions. This geographical distribution pattern was also closely related with the climatic regionalization. The present climatic regionalization pattern of the study area originated from the uplift of Tibetan Plateau and mainly occurred in or after the late Pleistocene. Therefore, the geographical distribution of testate amoebae in our study area may have experienced complicated and drastic changes corresponding to the variation of the climate caused by the geological events.
