Abstract The sizing of a small-scale linear Fresnel reflector directly influences its primary cost as well as the annual energy output and, hence, its financial attractiveness. In addition, the area required for its installation is a critical parameter in most of the applications. This paper presents the analysis of the effects of the longitudinal movement on the performance of small-scale linear Fresnel reflectors. Our design, patented in year 2017, shows to be really innovative when compared to the existing designs shown in the literature. The three-movement option marks the novelty of the design. The effect of three parameters (i.e. energy absorbed by the absorber tube, primary cost, and reflector area ratio) is evaluated for two locations in Europe. Different configurations are analyzed and compared with the typical configuration of a large-scale linear Fresnel reflector. Numerical simulations were carried out using a MATLAB code to calculate the energy absorbed by the absorber tube, the primary cost, and the reflector area ratio. The comparison of the configurations provided insight into how latitude impacts on the results. It will be demonstrated that both the energy absorbed by the absorber tube and the primary cost increase with longitudinal movement, while the reflector area ratio decreases. The Mediterranean basin is the richest biodiversity region in Europe and a global hotspot of biological diversity. In spite of that, anthropogenic climate change is one of the most serious concerns for nature conservation in this region. One of the climatic threats is represented by shifts of the Mediterranean climate and expansion of the arid climate. In this paper, we present an assessment of changes in the spatial range of the Mediterranean climate in Europe and the conversion into arid climate under different greenhouse gas forcings, namely RCP4.5 and RCP8.5. We used 11 simulations in two future 30-year periods of state-of-the-art regional climate models from EURO-CORDEX. Our results indicate that by the end of the century under RCP8.5 the present Mediterranean climate zone is projected to contract by 16%, i.e. an area (~ 157,000 km2) equivalent to half the size of Italy. This compares with the less severe scenario RCP4.5 that projected only a 3% reduction. In addition, the Mediterranean climate zone is projected to expand to other zones by an area equivalent to 24 and 50% of its present extent under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, respectively. Our study indicates that expansion of the arid zone is almost always the cause for contraction of the Mediterranean zone. Under RCP8.5 the arid zone is projected to increase by more than twice its present extent, equivalent to three times the size of Greece. Results of this study are useful for identifying (1) priority zones for biodiversity conservation, i.e. stable Mediterranean climate zones, (2) zones requiring assisted adaptation, such as establishment of new protected areas, implementation of buffer zones around protected areas and creating ecological corridors connecting stable Mediterranean zones. In this paper we characterize the seasonal and inter-annual variabilities of cloud fraction profiles in both observations and simulation since they are critical to better assess the impact of clouds on climate variability. The spaceborne lidar onboard CALIPSO, providing cloud vertical profiles since 2006, is used together with a 23-year WRF simulation at 20 km resolution. A lidar simulator helps to compare consistently model with observations. The bias in observations due to the satellite under-sampling is first estimated. Then we examine the vertical variability of both occurrence and properties of clouds. It results that observations indicate a similar occurrence of low and high clouds over continent, and more high than low clouds over the sea except in summer. The simulation shows an overestimate (underestimate) of high (low) clouds comparing to observations, especially in summer. However the seasonal variability of cloud vertical profiles is well captured by WRF. Concerning inter-annual variability, observations show that in winter, those of high clouds is twice the low clouds one, an order of magnitude that is is well simulated. In summer, the observed inter-annual variability is vertically more homogeneous while the model still simulates more variability for high clouds than for low clouds. The good behavior of the simulation in winter allows us to use the 23 years of simulation and 8 years of observations to estimate the time period required to characterize the natural variability of the cloud fraction profile in winter, i.e. the time period required to detect significant anomalies and trends. Patients, physicians, and health care providers in Europe have more than 10 years of experience with biosimilars. However, there are still debates if switching between a biosimilar and its reference product influences the efficacy of the treatment. In this paper, we address this uncertainty by developing a formal statistical test that can be used for showing that switching has no negative impact on the efficacy of biosimilars. For that, we first introduce a linear mixed-effects model that is used for defining the null hypothesis (switching influences the efficacy) and the alternative hypothesis (switching has no influence on the efficacy). Using this as the foundation of our work, we propose several approaches for testing for changes in the efficacy of the treatment due to switching and discuss the properties of these tests in an extensive simulation study. It is shown that all these methods have advantages and disadvantages and the decision regarding which method is preferred depends on the expectation of a switching assessment. To demonstrate the applicability of the methods in practice, the approaches were applied to the data of the EGALITY study, which compares the reference product Enbrel® (Amgen) with the approved biosimilar Erelzi® (Sandoz). In this paper, we present a simple theoretical extension from the Economic Geography literature to characterize the main features of pollution havens (lax environmental regulation, good market access to high-income countries and corruption opportunities). Using structural and reduced-form estimations, we find that pollution havens are not a “popular myth” for European firms, laxer environmental standards significantly explain the location choice of polluting affiliates. We analyze in depth the role of trade costs (using various bilateral and multilateral measures), a 1% increase in access to the European market from a pollution haven fosters relocation there by 0.1%. We also find that corruption lowers environmental standards, which strongly attract polluting firms: a 1% increase of corruption fuels relocation by 0.28%. We test the economic significance of these empirical findings via simulations. The protection of the European market (e.g., a carbon tax on imports) to stop relocations to pollution havens must be high (a decrease of the European market for Morocco and Tunisia equivalent to 13%) not to say prohibitive (31% for China). Ethnopharmacological relevance This paper has two overarching aims: (1) presenting the results of studying the Albacete tariff of medicines of 1526 and (2) broadly analyzing the origin and influences of medicinal traditional knowledge in the region of Albacete, Spain. We use historical and modern literature that may have influenced this knowledge. Our primary goal was to determine the ingredients used in the pharmacy in the 16th century CE in Albacete through the analysis of the tariff, and our secondary goal was to investigate until when ingredients and uses present in pharmacy and herbals persisted in later periods. Methods The identity of medicines and ingredients was determined by analyzing contemporary pharmacopoeias and classical pharmaceutical references. We analyzed further 21 sources (manuscripts, herbals, and books of medicines, pharmacopoeias, pharmacy inventories, and modern ethnobotanical records) for the presence/absence of ingredients and complex formulations of the tariff. Using factorial and cluster analysis and Bayesian inference applied to evolution models (reversible-jump Markov chain Monte Carlo), we compared textual sources. Finally, we analyzed the medicinal uses of the top 10 species in terms of frequency of citation to assess the dependence of modern ethnobotanical records on Renaissance pharmacy and herbals, and, ultimately, on Dioscorides. Results In Albacete 1526, we determined 101 medicines (29 simple drugs and 72 compound medicines) comprising 187 ingredients (85% botanical, 7.5% mineral, and 7.5% zoological substances). All composed medicines appear standardized in the pharmacopoeias, notably in the pharmacopoeia of Florence from 1498. However, most were no longer in use by 1750 in the pharmacy, and were completely absent in popular herbal medicine in Albacete 1995 as well as in Alta Valle del Reno (Italy) in 2014. Among the ingredients present in different formulation are the flowers of Rosa gallica , honey ( Apis mellifera ), the roots of Nardostachys jatamansi , and Convolvulus scammonia , pistils of Crocus sativus , grapes and raisins ( Vitis vinifera ), rhizomes of Zingiber officinale , bark of Cinnamomum verum , leaves and fruits of Olea europaea , mastic generally of Pistacia lentiscus , and wood of Santalum album . The statistical analysis of sources produces four well-separated clusters (Renaissance Herbals and Pharmacopoeias, Ethnobotany and Folk Medicine, Old phytotherapy, and Modern phytotherapy including Naturopathy) confirming our a priori classification. The clade of Renaissance Herbals and Pharmacopoeias appears separated from the rest in 97% of bootstrapped trees. Bayesian inference produces a tree determined by an initial set of two well-distinct core groups of ingredients: 64, locally used in Mediterranean Europe during centuries; and 45, imported, used in pharmacy during centuries. Complexity reached its maximum in Albacete 1526 and contemporary pharmacopoeias, gradually decreasing over time. The analysis of medicinal uses of the top 10 ingredients showed low coincidence between Dioscorides and different Renaissance herbals or medical treatises and of all of them with ethnobotany in Albacete. Conclusions Regarding our question: is there something new under the sun? In some aspects, the answer is “No”. The contrast between expensive drugs, highly valued medicines, and unappreciated local wild medicinal plants persists since the Salerno's school of medicine. Old medicine in Mediterranean Europe, as reflected by Albacete 1526 tariff of medicines, involved strict formulations and preferences for certain ingredients despite other ingredients locally available but underappreciated. This confirms the fact that any system of medicine does not get to use all available resources. Ethnobiological records of materia medica, in rural areas of Albacete, describe systems with a high degree of stability and resilience, where the use of local resources, largely wild but also cultivated, is predominant in contrast with the weight of imported exotic products in pharmacy. Reanalysis models are rapidly gaining popularity for simulating wind power output due to their convenience and global coverage. However, they should only be relied upon once thoroughly proven. This paper reports the first international validation of reanalysis for wind energy, testing NASA's MERRA and MERRA-2 in 23 European countries. Both reanalyses suffer significant spatial bias, overestimating wind output by 50% in northwest Europe and underestimating by 30% in the Mediterranean. We derive national correction factors, and show that after calibration national hourly output can be modelled with R 2 above 0.95. Our underlying data are made freely available to aid future research. We then assess Europe's wind resources with twenty-year simulations of the current and potential future fleets. Europe's current average capacity factor is 24.2%, with countries ranging from 19.5% (Germany) to 32.4% (Britain). Capacity factors are rising due to improving technology and locations; for example, Britain's wind fleet is now 23% more productive than in 2005. Based on the current planning pipeline, we estimate Europe's average capacity factor could increase by nearly a third to 31.3%. Countries with large stakes in the North Sea will see significant gains, with Britain's average capacity factor rising to 39.4% and Germany's to 29.1%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studying and understanding human brain is one of the main challenges of 21st century scientists. The Human Brain Project was conceived for addressing this challenge in an innovative way, enabling collaborations between 112 partners spread in 24 European countries. The project is funded by the European Commission and will last until 2023. This paper describes the ongoing activity at one of the Italian units focused on innovative brain simulation through high performance computing technologies. Simulations concern realistic models of neurons belonging to the cerebellar cortex. Due to the level of biological realism, the computational complexity of this model is high, requiring suitable technologies. In this work, simulations have been conducted on high-end Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). The first technology is used during model tuning and validation phases, while the latter allows to achieve real time elaboration, aiming at a possible development of embedded implantable systems. The number of elderly patients requiring hospitalisation in Europe is rising. With a greater proportion of elderly people in the population comes a greater demand for health services and, in particular, hospital care. Thus, with a growing number of elderly patients requiring hospitalisation competing with non-elderly patients for a fixed (and in some cases, decreasing) number of hospital beds, this results in much longer waiting times for patients, often with a less satisfactory hospital experience. However, if a better understanding of the recurring nature of elderly patient movements between the community and hospital can be developed, then it may be possible for alternative provisions of care in the community to be put in place and thus prevent readmission to hospital. The research in this paper aims to model the multiple patient transitions between hospital and community by utilising a mixture of conditional Coxian phase-type distributions that incorporates Bayes' theorem. For the purpose of demonstration, the results of a simulation study are presented and the model is applied to hospital readmission data from the Lombardy region of Italy. Abstract: Building energy use accounts for almost 50% of the total CO2 emissions in the UK. Most of the research has focused on reducing the operational impact of buildings, however in recent years many studies have indicated the significance of embodied energy in different building types. This paper primarily focuses on illustrating the relative importance of operational and embodied energy in a flexible use light distribution warehouse. The building is chosen for the study as it is relatively easy to model and represents many distribution centres and industrial warehouses in Europe. A carbon footprinting study was carried out by conducting an inventory of the major installed materials with potentially significant carbon impact and material substitutions covering the building structure. Ecotect computer simulation program was used to determine the energy consumption for the 25 years design life of the building. This paper evaluates alternative design strategies for the envelope of the building and their effects on the whole life emissions by investigating both embodied and operational implications of changing the envelope characteristics. The results provide an insight to quantify the total amount of CO2 emissions saved through design optimisation by modeling embodied and operational energy. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Recently, a demand regarding the assessment of release of dangerous substances from construction products was raised by European Commission which has issued the Mandate M/366 addressed to CEN. This action is in relation with the Essential Requirement No. 3 “Hygiene, Health and Environment” of the Construction Products Directive (89/106/EC). The potential hazard for environment and health may arise in different life cycle stages of a construction product. During the service life stage, the release of substances due to contact with the rain water is the main potential hazard source, as a consequence of the leaching phenomenon. The objective of this paper is to present the development of a coupled chemical-transport model for the case of a concrete based construction product, i.e. concrete paving slabs, exposed to rain water under outdoor exposure conditions. The development of the model is based on an iterative process of comparing the experimental results with the simulated results up to an acceptable fit. The experiments were conducted at laboratory scale (equilibrium and dynamic leaching tests) and field scale. The product was exposed for one year in two types of leaching scenarios under outdoor conditions, “runoff” and “stagnation”, and the element release was monitored. The model was calibrated using the experimental data obtained at laboratory scale and validated against measured field data, by taking into account the specific rain water balance and the atmospheric CO2 uptake as input parameters. The numerical tool used in order to model and simulate the leaching behaviour was PHREEQC, coupled with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) thermodynamic data base. The simulation results are satisfying and the paper demonstrates the feasibility of the modelling approach for the leaching behaviour assessment of concrete type construction materials. Abstract: During the ITER operation, various Test Breeding Modules (TBM) will be tested in the equatorial ports of the reactor. These TBMs are currently being developed in several research centres around in the world. The Helium-Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) blanket is one of two breeder blanket concepts developed in Europe. HCPB uses Beryllium pebbles act as a neutron multiplier and Li4SiO4 or Li2TiO3 pebbles act as breeder materials. The structural analysis of the breeding blanket is complex in terms of its geometry and loading conditions. Advanced computer codes are needed in order to determine the reliability of the various designs. In this context the mechanical characterization of pebble beds is important in order to simulate their behaviour. This paper illustrates three-axial experimental tests performed on Li2TiO3 pebble beds. In addition, preliminary results of the numerical simulations are shown. The numerical analyses were performed using an original model, based on the elastic–plastic behaviour of a single pebble, implemented in an FEM code. The paper highlights the importance of the confining pressure on the mechanical behaviour of pebble beds and the possibility of simulating them with homogeneous materials. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Today computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is widely used in industrial companies, research institutes and technical safety organizations to supplement the design and analysis of diverse technical components and large systems. Such numerical programs are applied to better understand complex fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena. In the last decades there is an increasing interest in the nuclear community to utilize such advanced programs for the evaluation of different nuclear reactor safety issues, where traditional analysis tools show deficiencies. Within the FP7 European project THINS (Thermal Hydraulics of Innovative Nuclear Systems), CFD and coupled 1D-3D thermal–hydraulic simulations are being carried out. These are dedicated to the analysis of the thermal–hydraulics of gas, liquid metal and supercritical water cooled reactors. Such concepts utilize innovative fluids, which have different properties from the ones used in the current nuclear reactors. In order to improve the thermal–hydraulic predictions of their behavior, CFD development, application and validation activities are performed within THINS. The possibility of recovering waste and renewable heat in urban areas has made district heating networks one of the key infrastructures for decarbonising the heating sector in Europe. The ability to shift the heat production over time is an important asset to improve the competitiveness of both new and existing networks. To this purpose, the present study evaluates the flexibility potential provided by the water volume enclosed in the network pipelines using the district heating network of Verona (Italy) as a case study. Given the users heat demand in two representative weeks, computer simulations were carried out to calculate the network's thermal response to circulating flow rate variations. The latter were designed to cause an early or late shift in the daily peak thermal load. The local temperature drop at the users substations compared to the current situation was used as a relative discomfort indicator. The simulations were carried out using the model NeMo, which has been attached as supplementary material to this publication. The simulation results show that the network pre-charge strategy achieves significant benefits in terms of both peak shaving and load shifting with a limited impact on discomfort for the users. Furthermore, the paper shows that the available storage capacity of the network is significantly influenced by the duration of the flow adjustment, by the average velocity of the heat carrier fluid and by the daily heat demand pattern. Finally, it is shown that the energy flexibility of the network also depends on its topology. In this regard, the article provides preliminary indications on the number and position of the bypass pipes needed to implement the proposed flow rate variations. In conclusion, the article shows that the thermal inertia of the heat carrier fluid is an interesting source of flexibility for existing networks, and the results highlight its potential and limitations. In this paper we explore the impact of vegetation cover and soil moisture coupling on climate simulations over the Europe. For this purpose, the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) is used. The analysis is based on three targeted simulations for the period 1981-2010: a control experiment (with a simple land-surface model that mimics interaction of soil and atmosphere); an experiment with land-surface temperature and soil moisture coupling, and an experiment with both soil moisture and interactive vegetation coupling. The amplitude and interannual variability of surface air temperature, precipitation and evaporation for summer and winter seasons are examined. Compared to the control experiment, increasing of surface temperature over the continental Europe is found for the experiment with soil-moisture model for both, winter and summer seasons. However, when ICTP AGCM is coupled with the dynamic vegetation model, increasing of surface temperature is simulated only during the summer, while it is reduced during the winter. Generally, the dynamic vegetation model reduces total precipitation over the observed domain, and areas with the most pronounced decrease of the total precipitation coincide with areas of reduced evaporation. The results indicate substantial impact of soil moisture and vegetation coupling on amplitudes of simulated surface air temperature, precipitation and evaporation with predominant contribution of the soil moisture coupling. The simulation of urban mobility is a modeling challenge due to the complexity and scale. The complexity in modeling a social agent is due to three reasons: (i) the agent is behaviorally complex itself due to several interrelated/overlapping modeling aspects; (ii) the setting in which a social agent operates usually demands a multi-resolution approach; and (iii) the consideration of real spatial and population data is the underpinning that has to be realized. In this paper, we propose an agent-based parallel geo-simulation framework of urban mobility based on necessary modeling aspects. The aspect-oriented modeling paradigm relates the models vertically as well as horizontally and highlights the situations requiring multi-resolution interfacing. The framework takes into consideration the importance of technological footprints embedded with social behavior along with essential space and mobility features keeping focus on the importance of the city-scale scenario. We have used a real, high-quality raster map of a medium-sized city in central Europe converting it into a cellular automata (CA). The fine-grained CA readily supports pedestrian mobility and can easily be extended to support other mobility modes. The urban mobility simulation is performed on a real parallel and distributed hardware platform using a CA compatible software platform. Abstract: Industrial fire and explosion hazards due to accidents in fuel storage units have gained a considerable attention in recent years. Both, the regulatory bodies and scientific communities are heavily concerned about the proper safety measures to avoid such calamities in the future. This paper aims to bring some essentials related to the hazards that arose from recent fuel storage fire accidents occurring in Buncefield, UK (2005), Puerto Rico, USA (2009) and Sitapura, India (2009). The potential similarities behind occurrence of these accidents are studied. The applicability of various methods (models) and also computer simulations to estimate the safety distances according to the international standards for both explosion and fire hazard are verified. The overpressures caused by the Vapor Cloud Explosions (VCE) and radiation fluxes emitted by the fires are considered for respective explosion and fire hazard estimations. There are several measures that summarize the mortality experience of a population. Of these measures, life expectancies are generally preferred based on their simpler interpretation and direct age standardization, which makes them directly comparable between different populations. However, traditional life expectancy estimations are highly inaccurate for smaller populations and consequently are seldom used in small-area applications. In this paper, the authors compare the relative performance of traditional life expectancy estimation with a Bayesian random-effects approach that uses correlations (i.e., borrows strength) between different age groups, geographic areas, and sexes to improve the small-area life expectancy estimations. In the presented Monte Carlo simulations, the Bayesian random-effects approach outperforms the traditional approach in terms of bias, root mean square error, and coverage of the 95% confidence intervals. Moreover, the Bayesian random-effects approach is found to be usable for populations as small as 2,000 person-years at risk, which is considerably smaller than the minimum of 5,000 person-years at risk recommended for the traditional approach. Abstract: A European chemical weather forecasting portal is presented in this paper that has been developed within the COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) ES0602 action, “Towards a European Network on Chemical Weather Forecasting and Information Systems”. The portal includes an access to a substantial number (currently 21) of available chemical weather forecasting systems and their numerical forecasts; these cover in total more than 30 regions in Europe. This portal can be used, e.g., to find out, which services are available for a specific domain, for specific source categories or for specific pollutants. The portal currently expands its functionalities to allow for a harmonized presentation and inter-comparison of the various available forecasts, as well as for the computation of model ensemble predictions. It provides functions for obtaining relevant supplementary information, e.g., using the Model Documentation System of the European Environmental Agency. The new portal is an open access system, through which chemical weather forecasts can be added to the system, and the predictions can be accessed, analysed and inter-compared. Such a single point of reference for the European chemical weather forecasting information has previously not been in operation. We present the characteristics of the new portal, and discuss how this activity complements the GEMS and PROMOTE air quality forecasting portals. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The assessment of derailment safety of new railway vehicle designs is a fundamental concern worldwide. Although the methods used for assessment in different countries and regions vary considerably, the fundamental mechanisms being addressed are the same. This paper provides a detailed review of the current state-of-the-art methods for derailment safety assessment in several regions and countries including Europe, UK, USA, and Russia. Brief overviews of the methods used in China, Korea, and Japan are also included. Similarities and differences are discussed, including testing and computer simulations. References are provided for the origins of the methods and safety performance criteria used in each region. Previous paradigms for presence research were primarily established in the context of virtual reality (VR). The objective of this paper is to introduce a new agenda for research on presence suitable for the domain of mixed reality (MR). While established assumptions and methods of presence research from VR are applicable to MR experiences, we argue that they are not necessarily meaningful or informative. Specifically, a shift of attention is needed away from psycho-physiological studies coming from a laboratory experiment tradition, toward an ecological-cultural approach that is applicable in real world situations and relies on ethnographic rather than fully controlled methods. Abstract: The Bulgarian Emergency Response System (BERS) is being developed in the Bulgarian National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology since 1994. BERS is based on numerical weather forecast meteorological information and a numerical long-range dispersion model accounting for the transport, dispersion, chemical and radioactive transformations of pollutants. In the present paper, the further development of this system for a mixture of radioactive gaseous and aerosol pollutants is described. The basic module for the BERS, the numerical dispersion model EMAP, is upgraded with a “dose calculation block”. Two scenarios for hypothetical accidental atmospheric releases from two NPPs, one in Western, and the other in Eastern Europe, are numerically simulated. The effective doses from external irradiation, from air submersion and ground shinning, effective dose from inhalation and absorbed dose by thyroid gland formed by 37 different radionuclides, significant for the early stage of a nuclear accident, are calculated as dose fields for both case studies and discussed. The suction bucket foundation is considered as an effective option for offshore wind turbines because of its advantages in rapid installation and recyclability. However, the depth of the suction bucket inserted into the seabed is shallower compared to the monopile. Earthquakes and liquefaction threaten the safety and stability of suction bucket foundations in the North Sea of Europe and the Chinese offshore where earthquakes are active and the seabed is prone to liquefaction. This paper investigated the behavior of the suction bucket foundation located in the liquefiable sand under earthquakes using an advanced liquefaction model. The FE-FD method with the cyclic mobility constitutive model for soil was used to carry out the nonlinear dynamic analyses. Responses of the excess pore water pressure ratio, acceleration, displacement, and rotation were studied under different earthquake magnitudes and sand density. The distribution of excess pore water pressure of the suction bucket foundation from the results show strong space-time characteristics. The failure mechanism of the suction bucket foundation after liquefaction was revealed. The numerical results indicate that offshore wind turbines will be subjected to permanent displacements and tilt to reach 40% of the safety threshold due to earthquakes and liquefaction. As a result of many factors, including the European Union's aim to increase the share of electrical energy from renewable sources, the number of distributed-generation (DG) devices in Europe is significantly increasing. Increasing numbers of DG units may cause problems with power quality (PQ). In this paper, a PQ-management algorithm is presented that reduces or even solves this problem in low-voltage grids. This algorithm will be implemented as one of several software modules in a system for distributed power operation and PQ management in low-voltage grids. PQ management in this context means maintaining PQ within prescribed limits by optimizing the control of generators, storage units, and controllable loads. Significant advantages of the presented approach are that the algorithm is universal and that it adapts its control variables automatically. Therefore, a detailed analysis of the grid in advance is not necessary. Furthermore, local PQ control of distributed resources can work autonomously and continuously without triggering by external signals, which is advantageous in the case of loss of communications. Various simulations to validate the effectiveness and stable operation of the algorithm were performed and results presented that show a marked improvement in PQ. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The work is devoted to the implementation of a monitoring system for high performance concrete embedded in the span of an extradosed bridge deck using a modified maturity method augmented by numerical simulations conducted by the authors' FEM code. The paper presents all research stages of bridge construction and considers the conclusions drawn from the results of laboratory tests, field measurements, and numerical calculations. The monitored structure is the largest extradosed bridge in Europe in terms of the span's length. Due to the considerable size and duration of the investment, it was beneficial to use an alternative method for estimating the compressive strength of concrete based on the maturity function. The bridge sections were investigated in three stages: in summer, autumn, and early spring (in June, September, and March). The monitoring of in-place concrete provided information on the actual temperature of the concrete and its gradients. Based on recorded temperatures and proposed numerical procedures, the actual strength of the cast-in-place concrete and the optimal dates of prestressing were determined. Lightweight roof and wall structural systems are widely used for cladding of steel portal frames. It is a well-known fact, that assembled systems of profiled sheeting and purlins show significant stiffness to in-plane loads, which action is referred to as stressed skin effect. This research aimed to investigate the influencing parameters of stressed skin effect in those nonstandard diaphragm constructions, in which seam fasteners are omitted. The focus of this paper is on the results of an experimental test programme, that investigated the stiffness of nonstandard, 3.00 × 3.00 m sized diaphragm configurations for in-plane static load. The experimental results are compared against analytical results derived from calculated shear flexibilities according to current ECCS formulae. Upon experimental test results, a verified and validated numerical model is developed, and the range of experimental tests is extended by numerical simulations. The conclusions of numerical analyses demonstrated, that the effect of purlin section height and thickness is not followed by current ECCS provisions. The intended purpose of the research is to develop the current ECCS stressed skin design formulae to incorporate nonstandard diaphragm constructions, which are commonly used in industrial practice in Europe. The innovative feature of formulae improvement is to comprise the effect of those parameters, which are influencing shear flexibility and are not addressed in the current ECCS design methodology.
