This paper examines the growth of the Olympic Games against that of former host cities to understand whether this mega-event may have 'outgrown' its hosts. The increasing hosting requirements and governments' expansive use of mega-events as tools for urban development would suggest that the 'Olympic city' – a term we use for describing the size of the Olympics as hosted in different cities over the decades – has grown at a faster rate than former host cities. The analysis contrasts historical indicators that capture the evolving size of planning for the event based on four dimensions – sport, spectators, marketing and costs – as well as the urban dimension of hosting experiences (venues and infrastructure) with city trajectories based on demographic and economic indicators. This is done through a longitudinal analysis of former Olympic host cities from the 1960s and 1970s and from which continuous longitudinal data are available: Tokyo, Munich, and Montreal. The findings indicate that the Olympic city has grown more strongly than these former host cities, although not uniformly across trajectories. This gives evidence for the need to review the size of mega-event impacts if they ought to continue to generate interest in hosting them in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The passing of Professor Arthur Getis in May of 2022 initiated a number of events to both reflect on and remember the tremendous contributions he has made over his career to geographical systems more broadly, but also spatial analysis, spatial statistics, regional science, geography and GIScience, among others. This began with a series of sessions at the North American Regional Science Council meetings held in Montreal, Canada in November of 2022, followed by an invitation from the editors of Journal of Geographical Systems, Manfred Fischer, Antonio Paez, and Petra Staufer-Steinnocher, to organize a special issue in his honor. Soon thereafter, an open call was initiated to solicit submissions to this special issue, seeking original contributions that overlap and complement the broad range of research undertaken by Professor Getis over a distinguished career and life. This paper offers an overview of prominent geographical systems work carried out by Professor Getis. Reflections on his many contributions are also detailed. The degradation of a concrete structure in northern climate is mainly due to the corrosion of steel reinforcements and cumulative damages from mechanical loading. Infrastructure managers heavily rely on ratings obtained from visual field surveys and the interpretation of inspection reports to predict the future structure states and to plan appropriate maintenance and replacement activities. In this paper, an effective structure management framework is proposed, combining information from on-site visual inspections and predictions from a nonlinear chloride transport model, to improve diagnostics for preventive maintenance. Meaningful predictions were obtained by using climatic data from neighboring weather stations and characterising the concrete transport properties with non-destructive tests. The chloride profiles from the model can be validated with core-drilled samples, if available. Predictions from the model were used to estimate the probability of the corrosion initiation and the condition states of the structural elements to complement the visual inspection observations. Finally, the ratings of each element were combined to obtain a global rating of the structure by considering the relative criticality of each element for the safety and the performance of the structure. Opened to traffic on 1 July 2019, the new Samuel De Champlain Bridge represents one of the largest infrastructure projects in North America. The rapidly deteriorating condition of the original Champlain Bridge in Montréal led the Government of Canada to accelerate its replacement and ultimately awarded a contract to the Signature on the Saint Lawrence Group, in 2015, to deliver a new replacement crossing. The project was fast-tracked, with a schedule of only 48 months from design to bridge opening. Due to its geographical location, this lifeline structure faces unique hazards including extreme cold temperatures, ice abrasion, de-icing salt attacks, wind, vessel collision, scour and seismic, while meeting its design life of 125 years. Sustainability and durability are also important project requirements. The 3.4 km long bridge is comprised of three independent structures: the 529 m long, asymmetric cable-stayed bridge (which features a single 169 m high tower), the 762 m long east approach and the 2044 m long west approach. The owner used a public–private partnership procurement model and the project was delivered using the design–build delivery method. An overview of this Can$2.4 billion mega project is provided in this paper, and the design and build solutions to overcome the suite of technical and schedule challenges are discussed. Veteran community engagement is an evolving discipline informed by traditional community-based participatory research, veteran studies, and veterans themselves. This Special Issue suggests that research collaborations including military veterans, soldiers, and their families as co-researchers is a critical next step toward a design thinking perspective in social and healthcare systems for this population. This Special Issue was conceptualized through a veteran community-academic partnership formed over a decade ago. This partnership hosted several Warrior Summit conferences from 2013 to present, with the last of this series calling for academic contributions. The resulting papers drawn from the conference and other authors form this issue, and include a wide range of topics: veteran microdosing and psychedelic self-medication; a historical view of the impact of education exchange between U.S. and South Korean military nurses; strategies for engaging veterans in research of a theater-based intervention for PTSD; interprofessional approaches to addressing veteran identity considerations through collaborations between chaplain service and psychologists in the VA Healthcare System; an international perspective exploring a community collaborative with veterans in Montréal, Canada; efforts to build long-term and sustainable models for veteran engagement in health services research; community-engaged strategies to address veteran homelessness within broader housing stability efforts; and examining the role of veteran peer mentorship programs in alcohol recovery. In this paper authors explore the main principles and regulations of airline transportation. This matter is of great importance in contemporary age. In fact, the focus of authors’ interest is the air passenger and his rights. Since air transport has developed excessively in the last century, it was necessary to establish a system of law in this branch. After introducing the reader in the matters of obligation law and torts, authors look upon matters of air transportation in general. This article particularly focuses on analysing rights of passengers according to Warsaw and Montreal conventions. Authors use historical – legal method reagarding this questions. After taking note on historical development, authors analyse contemporary law. By using comparative legal method, authors primarily explore statutory regulations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and former Yugoslavia. Focal point of this enquiry is Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Law on obligation relations in civil air transport. Hereafter, topic of this paper is also analysis of air passenger rights in airline legislation of European Union. Authors especially look into rights of passengers in case of being denied of boarding to plane, late flights and flight cancellation. The metropolitan community of Montreal (MMC) is located in Eastern Canada and included in the western Quebec seismic zone characterized by shallow crustal earthquakes and moderate seismicity. Most of the urbanized areas are settled close to the Saint-Lawrence River and its tributaries and within the region, delimiting the extension of the clay deposits from the Champlain Sea. The influence of these recent and soft deposits on seismic waves has been observed after the 1988 M5.8 Saguenay earthquake and has proven to be crucial in seismic hazard analysis. The shear-wave velocity Vs averaged over the 30 m of soil, abbreviated Vs30, is one of the most used parameters to characterize the site condition and its influence on seismic waves. Since 2000, a site condition model has been developed for the municipalities of Montreal and Laval, combining seismic and borehole data for risk mitigation purposes. The paper presents an extended version of the Vs30 mapping for the entire region of the MMC, which accounts for half of the population of Quebec, including additional ambient noise recordings, recently updated borehole datasets, geological vector map and unpublished seismic refraction data to derive Vs profiles. The estimated Vs30 values for thousands of sites are then interpolated on a regular grid of 0.01 degrees using the inverse distance weighted interpolation approach. Regions with the lowest estimated Vs30 values where site amplification could be expected on seismic waves are in the Northeastern part and in the Southwest of the MMC. The map expresses in terms of site classes is compared with intensity values derived from citizen observations after recent felt. In general, the highest reported intensity values are found in regions with the lowest Vs30 values on the map. Areas where this rule does not apply, should be investigated further. The association of ideologically motivated violence with mental health disorders raises specific challenges for security agencies and clinical services. The aim of this paper is to describe the clientele of a specialized intervention program based in Montreal, Quebec, in terms of type of violent ideology and clinical presentation. We conducted a retrospective chart review of 156 individuals referred for violent extremism who received clinical services between 2016 and 2021. Univariate statistics were used to present a description of client sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. Roughly a third of clients referred for violent extremism presented non-ideologically based violence (32.6%), followed by 31.4% affiliated with far-right extremist ideology and over a quarter (25.6%) holding extremist views on gender. Over a third of these individuals had a stress-related (35.7%) and/or mood and anxiety disorder (36.9%), followed by 28% with an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. The majority had some previous contact with mental health services. A significant number of clients displaying extremist discourses and/or actions needed psychiatric services but often failed to receive them because of the reluctance of clinicians to work with individuals perceived as high risk; in addition, individuals may be reluctant to engage in services perceived to be part of a socio-political system they reject. Specialized services are important as a means to provide mental health care to this group and also to develop knowledge and best practices for working with this clientele and provide consultation to mainstream mental health service providers. Nowadays, air conditioning consumes, on average, around one-fifth of the total power used in buildings globally. The present paper aims to provide the present status on the employment of Earth-to-Air Heat eXchangers (EAHX) to contain the consumption of energy and to reduce the effect on the environment in response to the Montreal and Kyoto protocols in a way to achieve cleaner energy production with a low Global Warming Potential (GWP) and a low ozone depletion potential (ODP). Different peculiarities and applications (direct or hybrid) are critically analyzed and reviewed. Specifically, in this paper, the different hybrid applications presented in the literature, where the Earth-to-Air Heat eXchangers are coupled to advanced systems, are reviewed. Finally, an IoT-based EAHX control system plan is reported and discussed to optimize energy efficiency and thermal comfort to suit operating conditions under different time zones. While scholars acknowledge the important role played by regulators in managing ride hailing and its impacts on cities, few studies have explored the implications for developing ride hailing regulations at different levels of governance. This paper examines regulatory approaches to ride hailing in Canada's three largest metropolitan regions: Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. Though united by a national border, these three regions are subject to unique governance approaches, histories, and trajectories. Although ground transportation in Canada usually falls within local or municipal authority, only Toronto, amongst these three city‐regions, treats the regulation of ground transportation as a local responsibility. In both Montreal and Vancouver, which are subject to different regulatory and governance structures, ride hailing is primarily regulated at the provincial level. As a more detailed examination reveals, we can further distinguish the three metropolitan areas based on the extent of intraregional coordination and regional mobility. By introducing these two concepts, the paper explores both the intended and unintended regional impacts of ride hailing regulations. These findings are relevant not only to ride hailing, but also to broader questions about governing both regional mobility and the platform economy. In a social and political context marked by increasingly polarized attitudes towards immigration and ethnic diversity, the paper uses the results of two research projects conducted ten years apart in Brussels and Montréal to reflect on methodological issues. The paper discusses two themes to show how to engage methodologically within a changing context, both theoretically and politically, and how various methodological choices might be used to fill some knowledge gaps. The first theme concerns the choice of research methods, and the type of knowledge they produce. The second theme addressed in this paper stresses the importance of paying more attention to the context where the research takes place, a process denoted here by the term situating. Two different interview methods are central to the discussion: in-depth interviews and 'on-the-spot' short interviews. This paper proposes the concept of mapping-ofrenda, which envisions mapping as a form of mourning and remembering while living in the context of migration. Inspired by the traditional Mexican ofrenda, the mapping-ofrenda aims to collect, curate, and represent posthumous memories. It can be produced collaboratively or individually, built with physical or digital maps, shared with other people, or kept private, and be dedicated to a single deceased or to an entire community. Through the process of co-designing two online ofrenda-maps with two Latina-American women living in Montreal (Canada) we identified some of the potential of mapping-ofrenda, including its capacity to stimulate our memories and remember stories on the verge of disappearing, to ground them to places, and to share them with people that might live far away. Mapping-ofrenda can also be a way of making visible the global geography of migration through highly intimate memories and acknowledging both the very personal and the highly universal need to remember and grieve. Finally, the main value of mapping-ofrenda in the context of migration, may be its capacity to reactivate and strengthen existing links and connections between people that are still alive but that may live far away. The potential of semiotics to theorize and analyze the field of sustainable architecture is still largely unexplored. This paper uses a triadic structure for defining sustainable design signs and distinguishes two separate modes of sustainable design reasoning: namely deductive and abductive sustainable design reasoning. This theoretical framework is used to analyze two architectural projects submitted for an international design competition in Montreal, Canada. The architectural texts, considered in this paper the representamen of the signs, prove to be indicative of the mode of reasoning deployed. The analysis also reveals that the mode of reasoning used dictates the types of signs produced, the role designed-objects have in the signs, as well as the functional possibilities design elements perform in the project. The paper proposes that deductive sustainable design reasoning brings to a halt the process of semiosis – presenting a status-quo approach – and that abductive sustainable design reasoning allows semiosis ad infinitum – presenting a future driven outlook. Additionally, a gap appeared between the open form of critical judgement proposed for competitions and the conceptual fixation inherit in deductive sustainable design reasoning. • Building form archetypes for medium-sized net zero energy (NZE) buildings were made. • A roof-integrated building-integrated photovoltaic/thermal (BIPV/T) system was used. • Sensitivity analysis ranked/quantified influential early design stage factors for NZE. • Separate sensitivity analyses were run for four different roof tilt angles. • Orientation, window-wall ratio south/north, and plan shape were most influential. This paper is the first of two that examine the influence of building form, including courtyards, on the energy performance of medium-sized institutional solar net zero energy buildings incorporating building-integrated photovoltaic/thermal (BIPV/T) roof systems. The inclusion of BIPV/T at the early design stage along with passive design techniques extends to energy flexibility considerations with a smart grid. A two storey 3 000 m2 medium-sized archetype building was considered. Through simulations, different building plan shapes and BIPV/T roof tilt angles supported by a range of related building enclosure variables such as insulation level and window characteristics were analyzed and compared. The design configurations used BIPV/T heat recovery for winter ventilation air preheating in the Montreal region. In this first paper, the methodology is presented. Then, using annual net energy use intensity as the target, a global sensitivity analysis was performed to rank and quantify the most sensitive design variables at different BIPV/T roof slopes. Out of the nine input variables analyzed, the most influential by rank were the orientation, the window to wall ratio for the south and north façades, and the plan shape, for roof tilt angles of 35°, 40°, and 45°. For a roof tilt angle of 30°, the window to wall ratio of the south façade was the most influential, switching rank with the orientation. Although not an input variable to the sensitivity analysis, this indicates as well the influence of the BIPV/T roof tilt angle. Also, there was a significant interaction effect between the plan shape and orientation, highlighting the utility of analyzing interaction effects at the early design stage and the importance of these two factors in solar-enhanced buildings. At the other end of the spectrum, the window type, the wall and roof insulation level, and the window to wall ratios for the east and west facades were the least significant – at least approximately one order of magnitude less sensitive than the first ranked input. In the second paper, the methodology is applied in a case study for early stage design in which relative comparisons are made considering building form, net-zero energy, and extended to the grid considering load matching and energy flexibility. Objective: Gestational diabetes (GDM) is a form of glucose intolerance which manifests during pregnancy. There is lack of literature regarding the study of cognitive functions in GDM. Recent evidences suggests an increase in accumulation of serum Advanced glycated end products (AGE’S) during GDM. Accumulation of AGE’s in brain can induce changes in permeability of blood brain barrier and creates oxidative stress and inflammation that can alter cognitive functions. In this study we hypothesize that diagnosis of GDM in pregnancy is related to lower cognitive scores which is correlated to increased serum AGE’s level. Method: This was a cross sectional case control study which recruited 60 participants in total consisting of two groups with 30 participants in each - diagnosed cases of GDM and healthy pregnant controls. Subjects were recruited from OPD of Obstetrics & Gynecology department in a tertiary care hospital in South India at gestational age of 32–36 weeks. On the first appointment, biochemical parameters of Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) & HbA1C was measured in both groups. Serum was obtained for testing levels of N Carboxy methyl lysine (N-CML) (a form of AGE). On second appointment, pen and paper neurocognitive tests including Montreal cognitive tests (MOCA) and Trail making test (TMT A & B) was presented. Event related potentials (ERP’s) are time locked EEG wave signals produced in response to a sensory, motor or cognitive event. P300 is an “endogenous” ERP produced by cognitive processing in response to a stimuli presented to subject. P300 wave Latency and amplitude was recorded in both the groups as an objective marker of cognitive processing. Above mentioned biochemical and neurocognitive parameters were compared between both the groups and correlation analysis between serum AGE levels and neurocognitive parameters was performed using SPSS software. Results: Biochemical parameters of HbAIC & N-CML(A form of AGE) levels were increased in GDM group (HbA1C 6.01±0.30 and N CML 236.25 ± 68.9) vs Control group (HbA1C 4.11 ± 0.68 and NCML 198.42 ± 44.2). Scores in MOCA were significantly lower in GDM (28 (27–29)) group as compared to controls (24 (23–25)). GDM subjects took significantly greater time to perform TMT A (24.59 ± 2.60 s) test than controls (29.7 ± 1.72 s). Significant changes were not found in P300 Latency & amplitude in GDM group. Decreased MOCA scores and increased duration of TMT A attempt were correlated with increased serum AGE concentration in GDM group. Conclusions: Our study indicates the vulnerability of women suffering from GDM to cognitive impairment during pregnancy. Digital sequence information (DSI) is crucial to technological advancements in diverse product areas from agriculture to environment and therapeutics. Advances in DNA sequencing technology have made it possible to generate and share vast amounts of genetic information data of various organisms at the global level at a relatively low cost. Advocates of open science support open access to DSI of genetic resources stored in public and private databases in silos. Due to the existing conundrum over the application of ABS mechanism under the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) and its Nagoya Protocol(NP) to intangible genetic data, much of the DSI usage is happening without obtaining Prior Informed Consent(PIC) of provider countries and communities, a mandatory requirement for access and utilisation of genetic material. This is hampering the negotiations under the CBD and NP framework for sharing of benefits of commercial utilisation of the resources with the resource providers. Allowing free access to genetic resource sequence information without PIC and Mutually Agreed Terms (MAT) will be detrimental to the interests of indigenous peoples and local communities who foster and preserve biodiversity in their jurisdictions. The paper examines the issues and arguments surrounding DSI and investigates the possibility and prospects of applying the ABS under the CBDNP framework to DSI. It will analyse the negotiations taking place under the United Nations Convention on Biodiversity as well as the decisions on DSI that arrived in the COP15(Committee of Parties) held in Montreal in December 2022. Urban ecology is a promising research field in limnology, but we still need to evaluate how urban waterbodies can sustain biodiversity. In this paper, we present a comprehensive foodweb perspective of urban waterbodies in the city of Montréal (Québec, Canada). The research goals are to evaluate if biodiversity and community structure of foodweb components (phytoplankton, zooplankton, and macroinvertebrates) are valuable tools for assessing the ecological status of urban waterbodies and examine how they are controlled by multiple factors related to trophic status and habitat complexity (origin, water residence, macrophyte cover, fish, and management practices). Multiple factor analysis, correlations, and non-parametric tests were used to examine the relationships between the environmental factors and foodweb biological variables. Our case study confirms that urban waterbodies are important sources of biodiversity and reveals that foodweb-based biological indicators are reliable tools for the biomonitoring of urban waterbodies. Foodweb biodiversity and community structure were more influenced by habitat complexity than by trophic status. The key determinants of variation were the differences in water regime, management of temporary and permanent waterbodies, and contrasts in habitat complexity depending on pond origin (artificial or natural) and macrophyte cover. Conventional construction materials which rely on a fossil-based, nonrenewable extractive economy are typically associated with an entrenched linear economic approach to production. Current research indicates the clear interrelationships between the production and use of construction materials and anthropogenic climate change. This paper investigates the potential for emerging high-performance biobased construction materials, produced sustainably and/or using waste byproducts, to enable a more environmentally sustainable approach to the built environment. Life-cycle assessment (LCA) is employed to compare three wall assemblies using local biobased materials in Montreal (Canada), Nairobi (Kenya), and Accra (Ghana) vs. a traditional construction using gypsum boards and rockwool insulation. Global warming potential, nonrenewable cumulative energy demand, acidification potential, eutrophication potential, and freshwater consumption (FWC) are considered. Scenarios include options for design for disassembly (DfD), as well as potential future alternatives for electricity supply in Kenya and Ghana. Results indicate that all biobased alternatives have lower (often significantly so) life-cycle impacts per functional unit, compared to the traditional construction. DfD strategies are also shown to result in −10% to −50% impact reductions. The results for both African countries exhibit a large dependence on the electricity source used for manufacturing, with significant potential for future decarbonization, but also some associated tradeoffs in terms of acidification and eutrophication. Transit-oriented development (TOD) is characterized as compact, mixed-use, and pedestrian-friendly development around transit stations, aiming to balance land use and transportation, enhance sustainability, and improve public transport accessibility. There are various TOD assessment methods; each target one of these goals. This paper proposes a comprehensive approach that addresses TOD goals in a multistage assessment. In the first stage, we identify station areas' typology using weighted node, place, and tie indices based on the correlation between land use and transportation. Then, feasible station areas for enhancing density and diversity are selected using a canonical score. In the second stage, station areas' typology is defined by sustainability criteria and a TOD index. Then, the efficiency of selected station areas for compactness is assessed using Data Envelopment Analysis. Finally, public transport accessibility is optimized for these stations in the third stage. We investigate the effects of weighting indicators of the node–place model in the first stage and aggregation methods in the second stage. We conduct a feasibility and efficiency assessment for the typology of station areas in Metro Montreal. This paper analyzes how the City of Montréal employed tools of urban planning—including a district plan, street redesign, rezoning, selective public consultation, expropriation, policing and surveillance—to spatially banish sex work from its historic district, using the red light symbol as a branding strategy. This coincided with a change in federal law (Bill C-36) and a policy shift to reposition sex workers as passive victims of sex trafficking. Using a case study design, this work explores the state's refusal to recognize the agency of those engaged in embodied socio-economic exchanges and the safety and solidarity possible in public space. In interviews, sex workers described strategies of collective organizing, resistance and protest to hold the city accountable during this process of displacement. This paper considers three configurations of air source heat pumps and building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems in a solar house. This study evaluates energy efficiency and flexibility when interacting with a smart grid. The reference case is a 5 kW BIPV system on the roof with a separate air-source heat pump water heater (HPWH). In the two more novel options we have: first, a 5 kW BIPV/thermal (BIPV/T) roof system where the heated air from the BIPV/T system is ducted to the air source of the HPWH, which also contains integrated thermal storage (hot water); in the second case we have an attached solarium with a 5 kW semi-transparent photovoltaic façade, with the solar heated air in the solarium connected to the air source of the HPWH with integrated water thermal storage. The three cases are modelled with an explicit finite difference thermal network model, and energy performance is determined and compared over a typical heating season in Montreal, Canada. The energy flexibility potential of the options is compared for different scenarios, such as heating the thermal water storage during the daytime (e.g. using the solar heat in the novel options) and using it for space heating during the time that the grid is under stress (and may have price incentives). Results show that the second novel case utilizing the solarium air as the source of the heat pump resulted in an over 80% energy use reduction relative to the reference. In comparison, the BIPV/T configuration had around 20% reduction compared to the reference case. The tank volume and solarium size had the highest impact on the flexibility of the system. Crutzen (1974) and Crutzen and Ehhalt (1977) presented two key papers in Ambio that in Ambioexemplify how science first revealed to humankind the potential for damage to our ozone shield in the Anthropocene. Crutzen's (1974) review is a sweeping summary of the risks to the ozone layer from supersonic aircraft, chlorofluorocarbons, as well as nuclear weapons testing and nuclear war. Crutzen and Ehhalt (1977) described how the nitrous oxide produced from fertilizers could pose another threat to the stability of the stratospheric ozone layer. The two papers are part of a body of influential scientific work that led to the pioneering Montreal Protocol to Protect the Earth's Ozone Layer to phase out production of chlorofluorocarbons (in 1987), as well as national decisions that slowed or stopped production of supersonic planes (in the 1970s). Objectives: Respondent-Driven Sampling (RDS) is a variant of link-tracing, a sampling technique for surveying hard-to-reach communities that takes advantage of community members' social networks to reach potential participants. While the RDS sampling mechanism and associated methods of adjusting for the sampling at the analysis stage are well-documented in the statistical sciences literature, methodological focus has largely been restricted to estimation of population means and proportions, while giving little to no consideration to the estimation of population network parameters. As a network-based sampling method, RDS is faced with the fundamental problem of sampling from population networks where features such as homophily (the tendency for individuals with similar traits to share social ties) and differential activity (the ratio of the average number of connections by attribute) are sensitive to the choice of a sampling method. Methods: Many simple approaches exist to generate simulated RDS data, with specific levels of network features (mainly homophily and differential activity), where the focus is on estimating means and proportions (Gile 2011; Gile et al. 2015; Spiller et al. 2018). However, recent findings on the inconsistency of estimators of network features such as homophily in partially observed networks (Crawford et al. 2017; Shalizi and Rinaldo 2013) raise the question of whether those target features can be recovered using the observed RDS data alone – as recovering information about these features is critical if we wish to condition upon them. In this paper, we conduct a simulation study to assess the accuracy of existing RDS simulation methods, in terms of their abilities to generate RDS samples with the desired levels of two network parameters: homophily and differential activity. Results: The results show that (1) homophily cannot be consistently estimated from simulated RDS samples and (2) differential activity estimators are more precise when groups, defined by traits, are equally active and equally represented in the population. We use this approach to mimic features of the Engage Study, an RDS sample of gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in Montréal, Canada. Conclusions: In this paper, we highlight that it is possible, in some cases, to simulate population networks by mimicking the characteristics of real-world RDS data while retaining accuracy and precision for target network features in the samples. This paper extends the methodology presented in the companion paper to study the effects of non-structural components' (NSCs) damping ratio and their location in the building on the pseudo-acceleration floor response spectra (PA-FRS) of reinforced concrete buildings, and propose equations to derive floor acceleration design spectra (FDS) directly from the uniform hazard design spectra (UHS) for Montréal, Canada. The buildings used in the study are 27 existing reinforced concrete structures with braced frames and shear walls as their lateral load resisting systems: 12 are low-rise (up to 3 stories above ground), 10 are medium-rise (4 to 7 stories), and 5 are high-rise (10 to 18 stories). Based on statistical and regression analysis of floor acceleration spectra generated from linear dynamic analysis of coupled building–NSC systems, two sets of modification factors are proposed to account for floor elevation and NSC damping, applicable to the experimentally-derived FDS for roof level and 5% NSC damping. Modification factor equations could be derived only for the low-rise and medium-rise building categories, as insufficient correlation in trends could be obtained for high-rises given their low number. The approach is illustrated in detail for two typical buildings of the database, one low-rise (Building #4) and one medium-rise (Building #18), where the proposed FDS/UHS results show agreement with those obtained from detailed dynamic analysis. Utility-based shortfall risk measure (SR) has received increasing attentions over the past few years. Recently Delage et al. [Shortfall Risk Models When Information of Loss Function Is Incomplete, GERAD HEC, Montréal, 2018] consider a situation where a decision maker's true loss function in the definition of SR is unknown but it is possible to elicit a set of plausible utility functions with partial information and consequently propose a robust formulation of SR based on the worst-case utility function. In this paper, we extend this new stream of research to a multi-attribute prospect space since multi-attribute decision-making problems are ubiquitous in practical applications. Specifically, we introduce a preference robust multivariate utility-based shortfall risk measure (PRMSR) and demonstrate that it is law invariant and convex. We then apply the PRMSR to an optimal decision-making problem where the objective is to minimize the PRMSR of a vector-valued cost function and propose some numerical scheme for solving the resulting optimization problem in the case when the underlying exogenous uncertainty is finitely distributed. Finally, we discuss statistical robustness of the PRMSR based optimization model by examining qualitative stability of the estimator of the optimal value obtained with potentially contaminated data. Drawing on secondary literature, this paper first identifies trends in Jewish religious intermarriage in Canada--including variation over time, gender, age and community size. It then critically examines results from the 2018 Survey of Jews in Canada to explore factors associated with intermarriage. Binary logistic regression demonstrates that intermarriage is significantly and independently associated with residing in cities other than Montreal and Toronto, relative youth, male gender, having little Jewish secondary socialization outside the family and having both parents born in Canada. The statistically positive effect of having intermarried parents on children's likelihood of intermarriage falls if children attend full-time Jewish school and summer camp with Jewish content. The effect disappears if at least one parent is an immigrant. These findings imply that the rising rate of intermarriage can be significantly mitigated if the Jewish community finds the means to increase the proportion of children who undergo intensive Jewish secondary socialization and the proportion of immigrants in the Jewish community. This paper adopts a spatial-temporal lens to examine mainstream print media representations of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer and Two-Spirit (LGBTQ2S) suburbanites in Canada's largest metropolitan areas in the 1990s. Due to major changes in Canadian gay rights legislation, the 1990s were a decade when the spatial and temporal reproduction of heteronormativity was contested, including in suburban areas. Through a focus on the metropolitan periphery, this paper argues that LGBTQ2S people and their politics were discursively positioned in print media coverage as spatially unexpected and temporally disruptive of heteronormativity. Drawing upon a suburban LGBTQ2S print-media database from 1985 to 2005 (n = 1300), an analysis of aggregate patterns is provided and three exemplary case studies of suburban 'moral panics' detailed from within case-study metropolitan areas of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. The paper concludes that the greatest public debate in the print media was generated when queers intruded upon institutions that were central to the reproduction of heteronormative futures, that is, the institutions that are the very foundation of suburbia such as recreational spaces, religious institutions and schools. While discourses of peace abound in cultural, youth and EDMC studies, notably in relation to concepts like communitas, the dominant moral and modern conceptions of peace and conflict appear limited to tackling the inevitable conflict dynamics inside parties and around the vibe as a peak experience. Inspired by contemporary peace studies, Peter Sloterdijk's psychopolitical-morphological argument known as spherology and participation in Montreal's psytrance scenes, this paper offers an alternative understanding of productive conflicts at work in the vibe and outside of it. At the end, this paper seeks to offer observers and practitioners means to discuss the various peace-conflict dynamics nascent on dance floors with effects on global cultural formations. This paper presents a heuristic model predictive control (MPC) methodology to activate energy flexibility in fully electric school buildings in cold climates to reduce electricity demand during peak demand periods of the electric grid. To streamline the implementation of MPC, the proposed approach employs grey-box archetypes, a clustering of weather conditions to identify typical scenarios and a limited number of possible setpoint profiles. A data-driven grey-box approach is used to create archetype models for different thermal zones in a typical school building; this approach enables rapid development and requires much less calibration data than black-box models. A third-order resistance-capacitance thermal network for zones with convective heating and a fourth-order model for zones with radiant floor heating are developed and calibrated using measured data from an all-electric school building in Québec, Canada. The weather data are clustered into several categories, representing different weather conditions (6 clusters representing two ambient temperature ranges and three solar radiation ranges). The heuristic MPC strategy uses predefined optimal setpoint profiles for each cluster and weather prediction one day ahead to shift the building load from on-peak to off-peak hours. For each heuristic MPC scenario, the model runs a simulation using forecast weather data to quantify and activate energy flexibility in response to grid requirements. The developed MPC framework was implemented in the school used as the case study. Ten classrooms are investigated, with six using the MPC and four as a reference case with the reactive control system and default zone setpoint profiles. Results indicate that the school building can provide between 47% and 95% energy flexibility (load shifting relative to reference) during on-peak hours and up to 44% electricity cost reduction while satisfying acceptable temperature constraints. By implementing the proposed MPC, energy flexibility of 32 W/m2 of floor area for the zones with a convective heating system and 65 W/m2 of floor area for the zones with radiant heating can be achieved during a demand response event. This paper reports on the findings of an empirical study of the street‐level visual spatialities of urban platforms in three Canadian cities: Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Enumerating, typologizing, and spatially analyzing incidences of platforms in these three cities, we find platforms to be concentrated in neighbourhoods classified as "gentrified," "gentrifying," and "gentrifiable," while being largely absent from established affluent enclaves. We theorize the significance of these spatialities in three ways. First, we suggest that the emplaced visibility of platforms functions to cue expenditures of digital spatial capital—the ability to stake claims to space through engagements with digital technologies—in neighbourhoods where these platformized materialities are visually encountered. Second, we argue that these expenditures of spatial capital are associated with the ways in which platforms glamorize mundane urban consumption practices (the aestheticization of consumption) while decoupling acts of consumption from face‐to‐face interaction (the anaestheticization of social relations). And third, we identify propositions for how these an/aesthetic dynamics may potentially influence the further densification of platforms on city streets in transitioned (gentrified) and transitional (gentrifying and gentrifiable) urban enclaves. Waterfront redevelopment is one of the main categories of urban project in major cities since the 1980s. However, waterfronts are faced with issues of fragmented land ownership and a lack of integration with other central neighbourhoods. Using Montreal's waterfront as a case study, this paper shows how the governance framework of urban design may undermine their integration. The observation of user behaviour within public spaces offers a new perspective for the redesign of these links between neighbourhoods, and seeks to contribute to a vision of waterfront precincts beyond the limits imposed by administrative constraints. Since it was first published, Alexandre Chenevert (The Cashier) has regularly been studied from the so-called “psychological” perspective while the hero’s bodily dimension, as revealed through the narrative, has long been ignored. But what literally and properly can be said about Alexandre’s body? The aim of our paper is to answer this question, at least in part. Through a semiotic reading of the body seen as a vector of communicative signs, for which we provide the methodological principles, we first of all define the protagonist’s behavioural attitude in relationship to other characters in the novel. Secondly, we isolate the conditions behind the existence of various behaviours. Finally, and concurrently, we establish the poetics of the non-verbal in Gabrielle Roy based on three extracts, i.e. chapters two, three and five of the first part of the novel. Our analysis leads us to conclude that labelling Alexandre as a “victim” is not always appropriate. Although the label appears to fit, Alexandre is confronted with people who are permeated with the language of propaganda, false advertising and information. This language abounds in the novel and the Montreal cashier tells himself he must constantly be on his guard against it. The character’s alienation is subjected to yet another trial but, for Alexandre, body language is a way to escape it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Audits conducted on medical records have been traditionally used in hospitals to assess and improve quality of medical care but have yet to be properly integrated and used for suicide prevention purposes. We aimed to (1) revise a quality of care grid and adapt it to an adult population of suicide attempters and (2) identify quality of care deficits in managing adult suicide attempters at the emergency department (ED) in two different Montreal university hospitals. An existing checklist for quality of medical and social care in the ED was adapted. A systematic search and data extraction of all suicide attempters in two different Montreal university hospitals were then conducted. All identified individuals who attempted suicide were fully reviewed and quality of care was assessed. Eleven criteria were kept by the expert focus group in the revised grid that was then used to rate 369 individuals that attempted suicide. Suicide risk assessment was only present in 63% of attempters before discharge. Although family history was documented for 90% of attempters, in only 41% of the cases were interviews conducted with relatives. Most discharged patient lacked proper follow-up considering 11% of their relatives received written information on resources in case of need. Paper records may be used to systematically assess the quality of care for suicide attempters seen in ED. Results reiterate the need for better suicide prevention strategies for these individuals. Inspired by the South American research tradition known as "social technology," this article proposes an operational framework to advance the understanding of mechanisms that help to promote social transformation. To illustrate its theorizing potential, we apply the framework to a nonprofit organization–Parole d'excluEs–that was created in Montreal (Canada) in 2006 and that has been promoting citizen mobilization and commitment to social change (parole-dexclues.ca). To that end, we offer a theoretical paper with an empirical illustration as a first step in a reflection on employing a global South theoretical lens–drawing on the concept of social technology–to make sense of a global North social innovation experience and to advance existing knowledge on the mechanisms of social transformation. Moving averages and other functional forecasting models are used to inform policy in pandemic response. In this paper, we analyze an infectious disease model in which the contact rate switches between two levels when the moving average of active cases crosses one of two thresholds. The switching mechanism naturally forces the existence of periodic orbits. In order to make unbiased comparisons between periodic orbits in this model and a traditional one where the contact rate switches based on more simplistic pointwise evaluations of active cases, we use a rigorous homotopy continuation method. We develop computer-assisted proofs that can validate the continuation and prove that the branch of periodic orbits has no folds and is isolated in the space of periodic solutions. This allows a direct, rigorous comparison between the geometric and quantitative properties of the cycles with a moving average threshold and a pointwise threshold. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the method on a sample problem modeled off of the COVID-19 pandemic in the city of Montreal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
