AbstractIn order to improve the global search ability of the optimization algorithm when solving the path synthesis problem, this paper proposes a synthesis method of a four-bar mechanism based on the bisection strategy of the Lévy-PSO evolutionary algorithm. First, a synthesis equation of the target point is established based on the closed-loop vector method. Use the bisection strategy to cut the hinge coordinate variation range to reduce the probability of premature maturity of the algorithm. The error algorithm of the circular proximity function is used to reduce the search dimension of the optimization algorithm and improve search efficiency. Use the improved particle swarm algorithm based on Lévy to improve global search capabilities. Differential evolution (DE) is among the best evolutionary algorithms for global optimization. However, the basic DE has several shortcomings, like the slow convergence speed, and it is more likely to be stuck at local optima. Additionally, DE's performance is sensitive to its mutation strategies and control parameters for mutation and crossover. In this scope, we present in this paper three mechanisms to overcome DE limitations. First, two novel mutations called DE/mean-current/2 and DE/best-mean-current/2 are proposed and integrated in the DE algorithm, and they have both exploration ability and exploitation trend. On the other hand, to avoid being trapped in local minima of hard functions, a new exploration operator has been proposed called Weibull flight based on the Weibull distribution. Finally, new adapted control parameters based on the Weibull distribution are integrated. These parameters contribute to the optimization process by adjusting mutation scale and alleviating the parameter setting problem often encountered in various metaheuristics. The efficacy of the proposed algorithms called meanDE, MDEW, AMDE, and AMDEW is validated through intensive experimentations using classical tests, some challenging tests, the CEC2017, CEC2020, the most recent CEC2022, four constraint engineering problems, and the data clustering problem. Moreover, comparisons with several popular, recent, and high-performance optimization algorithms show a high effectiveness of the proposed algorithms in locating the optimal or near-optimal solutions with higher efficiency. The experiments clearly indicate the effectiveness of the new mutations compared to the standard DE mutations. Moreover, the proposed Weibull flight has a great capacity to deal with the hard composition functions of CEC benchmarks. • Variational Quantum Circuits (VQCs) play a key role in several applications. • VQCs are parameterized quantum circuits trained by using classical optimizers. • The paper proposes to apply memetic algorithms to train VQCs. • The designed memetic algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art classical optimizers. Among the ready-to-implement quantum algorithms, Variational Quantum Circuits (VQCs) play a key role in several applications, including machine learning. Their strength lies in the use of a parameterized quantum circuit that is trained by means of an optimization algorithm run on a classical computer. In such a scenario, there is a strong need to design appropriate classical optimization schemes that deal efficiently with VQCs and pave the way for quantum advantage in machine learning. Among possible optimization schemes, those based on evolutionary computation are finding increasing interest, given the unconventional and nonanalytical nature of the problem to be solved. The phasmatodea population evolution algorithm (PPE) is a recently proposed meta-heuristic algorithm based on the evolutionary characteristics of the stick insect population. The algorithm simulates the features of convergent evolution, population competition, and population growth in the evolution process of the stick insect population in nature and realizes the above process through the population competition and growth model. Since the algorithm has a slow convergence speed and falls easily into local optimality, in this paper, it is mixed with the equilibrium optimization algorithm to make it easier to avoid the local optimum. Based on the hybrid algorithm, the population is grouped and processed in parallel to accelerate the algorithm's convergence speed and achieve better convergence accuracy. On this basis, we propose the hybrid parallel balanced phasmatodea population evolution algorithm (HP_PPE), and this algorithm is compared and tested on the CEC2017, a novel benchmark function suite. The results show that the performance of HP_PPE is better than that of similar algorithms. Finally, this paper applies HP_PPE to solve the AGV workshop material scheduling problem. For large-scale multiobjective evolutionary algorithms based on the grouping of decision variables, the challenge is to design a stable grouping strategy to balance convergence and population diversity. This paper proposes a large-scale multiobjective optimization algorithm with two alternative optimization methods (LSMOEA-TM). In LSMOEA-TM, two alternative optimization methods, which adopt two grouping strategies to divide decision variables, are introduced to efficiently solve large-scale multiobjective optimization problems. Furthermore, this paper introduces a Bayesian-based parameter-adjusting strategy to reduce computational costs by optimizing the parameters in the proposed two alternative optimization methods. The proposed LSMOEA-TM and four efficient large-scale multiobjective evolutionary algorithms have been tested on a set of benchmark large-scale multiobjective problems, and the statistical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. This paper introduces an evolutionary algorithm for n-dimensional single objective optimization problems: One-Dimensional Subspaces Optimization Algorithm (1D-SOA). The algorithm starts with an initial population in randomly selected positions. For each individual, a percentage of the total number of dimensions is selected, each dimension corresponding to a one-dimensional subspace. Later, it performs a symmetric search for the nearest local optima in all the selected one-dimensional subspaces (1D-S), for each individual at a time. The search stops if the new position does not improve the value of the objective function over all the selected 1D-S. The performance of the algorithm was compared against 11 algorithms and tested with 30 benchmark functions in 2 dimensions (D) and 30D. Dynamic economic emission dispatch（DEED） problem in power system is a kind of high-dimensional multiobjective optimization problem with large-scale constraints. The traditional evolutionary algorithm is easy to fall into local optimization, and the distribution and convergence of the obtained Pareto frontier are poor. In this paper, it fully explore the clonal selection principle of immune system, and propose a hybrid immune multi-objective optimization algorithm（HIMOA）. The proposed algorithm takes the traditional evolutionary algorithm as the basic framework.Since the deficiency of falling local optimization for the high-dimensional decision variables optimization, the external archive update mechanism is improved to preserve the excellent individuals from previous generations, and the cloning and Gaussian mutation strategy is adopted to strengthen the local exploitation ability, forcing effectively the HIMOA to jump out of the stagnant search state. In order to cope with the large-scale constraints, designing the fine-turning output power step by step to improve the feasibility of the evolutionary population. In the numerical simulation experiment, taking a 10-unit system as a test example, and compares HIMOA with the famous algorithms MODE,NSGAII, IMOEA/D-CH, ADEA, MOHDE＿SAT, MONNDE. The results show that HIMOA can provide a better Pareto solution to the 10-unit system of the DEED problem, and the convergence and distribution of the Pareto frontier obtained are better than other algorithms. With the development of current computing technology, workflow applications have become more important in a variety of fields, including research, education, health care, and scientific experimentation. A group of tasks with complicated dependency relationships constitute the workflow applications. It can be difficult to create an acceptable execution sequence while maintaining precedence constraints. Workflow scheduling algorithms (WSA) are gaining more attention from researchers as a real-time concern. Even though a variety of research perspectives have been demonstrated for WSAs, it remains challenging to develop a single coherent algorithm that simultaneously meets a variety of criteria. There is very less research available on WSA in the heterogeneous computing system. Classical scheduling techniques, evolutionary optimisation algorithms, and other methodologies are the available solution to this problem. The workflow scheduling problem is regarded as NP-complete. This problem is constrained by various factors, such as Quality of Service, interdependence between tasks, and user deadlines. In this paper, an efficient meta-heuristic approach named Multi-objective Artificial Algae (MAA) algorithm is presented for scheduling scientific workflows in a hierarchical fog-cloud environment. In the first phase, the algorithm pre-processes scientific workflow and prepares two task lists. In order to speed up execution, bottleneck tasks are executed with high priority. The MAA algorithm is used to schedule tasks in the following stage to reduce execution times, energy consumption and overall costs. In order to effectively use fog resources, the algorithm also utilises the weighted sum-based multi-objective function. The proposed approach is evaluated using five benchmark scientific workflow datasets. To verify the performance, the proposed algorithm's results are compared to those of conventional and specialised WSAs. In comparison to previous methodologies, the average results demonstrate significant improvements of about 43% in execution time, 28% in energy consumption and 10% in total cost without any trade-offs. The evolutionary game theory aims to simulate different decision strategies in populations of individuals and to determine how the population evolves. Compared to strategies between two agents, such as cooperation or noncooperation, strategies on multiple agents are rather challenging and difficult to be simulated via traditional methods. Particularly, in a knowledge spillover problem (KSP), cooperation strategies among more than hundreds of individuals need to be simulated. At the same time, the brain storm optimization (BSO) algorithm, which is a data-driven and model-driven hybrid paradigm, has the potential to simulate the complex behaviors in a group of simple individuals. In this paper, a modified BSO algorithm has been used to solve KSP from the perspective of evolutionary game theory. Knowledge spillover (KS) is the sharing or exchanging of knowledge resources among individuals. Firstly, the KS and evolutionary game theory were introduced. Then, the KS model and KS optimization problems were built from the evolutionary game perspective. Lastly, the modified BSO algorithms were utilized to solve KS optimization problems. Based on the applications of BSO algorithms for KSP, the properties of different swarm optimization algorithms can be understood better. The multi-objective optimization (MOO) of complex systems remains a challenging task in engineering domains. The methodological approach of applying MOO algorithms to simulation-enabled models has established itself as a standard. Despite increasing in computational power, the effectiveness and efficiency of such algorithms, i.e., their ability to identify as many Pareto-optimal solutions as possible with as few simulation samples as possible, plays a decisive role. However, the question of which class of MOO algorithms is most effective or efficient with respect to which class of problems has not yet been resolved. To tackle this performance problem, hybrid optimization algorithms that combine multiple elementary search strategies have been proposed. Despite their potential, no systematic approach for selecting and combining elementary Pareto search strategies has yet been suggested. In this paper, we propose an approach for designing hybrid MOO algorithms that uses reinforcement learning (RL) techniques to train an intelligent agent for dynamically selecting and combining elementary MOO search strategies. We present both the fundamental RL-Based Hybrid MOO (RLhybMOO) methodology and an exemplary implementation applied to mathematical test functions. The results indicate a significant performance gain of intelligent agents over elementary and static hybrid search strategies, highlighting their ability to effectively and efficiently select algorithms. Many-objective optimization problems (MaOPs) are challenging tasks involving optimizing many conflicting objectives simultaneously. Decomposition-based many-objective evolutionary algorithms have effectively maintained a balance between convergence and diversity in recent years. However, these algorithms face challenges in accurately approximating the complex geometric structure of irregular Pareto fronts (PFs). In this paper, an information entropy-driven evolutionary algorithm based on reinforcement learning (RL-RVEA) for many-objective optimization with irregular Pareto fronts is proposed. The proposed algorithm leverages reinforcement learning to guide the evolution process by interacting with the environment to learn the shape and features of PF, which adaptively adjusts the distribution of reference vectors to cover the PFs structure effectively. Moreover, an information entropy-driven adaptive scalarization approach is designed in this paper to reflect the diversity of nondominated solutions, which facilitates the algorithm to balance multiple competing objectives adaptively and select solutions efficiently while maintaining individual diversity. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, the RL-RVEA compared with seven state-of-the-art algorithms on the DTLZ, MaF, and WFG test suites and four real-world MaOPs. In this paper, a multi-operator differential evolution algorithm (MODE) is proposed to solve the Optimal Power Flow problem, called MODE-OPF. The MODE-OPF utilizes the strengths of more than one differential evolution operator in a single algorithmic framework. Additionally, an adaptive method is proposed to update the number of solutions evolved by each DE operator based on both the diversity of the population and the quality of solutions. This adaptive method has the ability to maintain diversity at the early stages of the optimization process and boost convergence at the later ones. The performance of the proposed MODE-OPF is tested by solving OPF problems for both small and large IEEE bus systems (i.e., IEEE-30 and IEEE-118) while considering intermittent solar and wind power generation. To prove the suitability of this proposed algorithm, its performance has been compared against several state-of-the-art optimization algorithms, where MODE-OPF outperforms other algorithms in all experimental results thereby improving a network's performance with lower cost. This paper introduces a novel surrogate-assisted multi-objective nutcracker optimization algorithm. This algorithm is built upon the recently proposed nutcracker optimization algorithm, drawing inspiration from the behaviours observed in Clark's nutcrackers. The algorithm is developed based on two distinct behaviours exhibited by these birds. To comprehensively evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, a dual-pronged approach is adopted. On the one hand, a set of artificial test problems is employed to scrutinize the algorithm's capabilities, while on the other hand, a set of real-world problems is considered to assess its practical efficacy. The results of the proposed algorithm are evaluated in comparison to existing baseline algorithms and state-of-the-art algorithms, using well-recognized performance metrics, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Combinatorial optimization problems (COPs) play an important role in both industrial production and theoretical research. As a classical class of optimization algorithms, evolutionary algorithms have shown good performance in COPs. However, as the size of the problem increases, it becomes difficult for evolutionary algorithms to produce satisfactory solutions within the specified time. In recent years, neural network algorithms have been applied to solve COPs and have shown superior effects. Inspired by this, this paper proposes a new algorithm based on graph structure for solving COPs. Through relaxation, COPs are transformed into their corresponding continuous optimization problems. The output state of our algorithm is converted to a discrete solution by approximation method. Compared with previous algorithms, our algorithm can not only solve COPs with general form such as binary quadratic programming (BQP), but also solve COPs with special form, which greatly expands the application scope of neural network algorithms. In addition, our algorithm can be embedded into other problem frameworks such as solving multi-objective combinatorial optimization problem (MOCOP) through scalarization method. A new penalty function is added to the objective function, which enables our algorithm to overcome the inconsistency between the optimal solution of the original problem and the corresponding continuous problem, so that our algorithm can perform well on various problems. Several numerical simulations are used to illustrate the effectiveness of our algorithm in solving COPs. Today, intelligent optimization has become a science that few researchers have not used in dealing with problems in their field. Diversity and flexibility have made the use, efficiency, and usefulness of various nature-inspired optimization methods, such as evolutionary and meta-heuristic algorithms, more evident in such problems. This work first provides a comprehensive overview of all considerations governing various optimization problems with detailed corresponding categories. Then, the most comprehensive review and recent methods (during 1965–2022) are presented in evolution-based, swarm-based, physics-based, human-based, and hybrid-based categories. More than 320 new algorithms have been reviewed. All specifications including authors, year, abbreviation, inspired source, controls, and their application are considered in this regard. Statistical analyzes of papers and publishers, annually and for 57 years, along with their ranking, are also examined in detail. The parameters of support vector machines (SVMs) such as kernel parameters and the penalty parameter have a great influence on the accuracy and complexity of the classification models. In the past, different evolutionary optimization algorithms were employed for optimizing SVMs; in this paper, we propose a social ski-driver (SSD) optimization algorithm which is inspired from different evolutionary optimization algorithms for optimizing the parameters of SVMs, with the aim of improving the classification performance. To cope with the problem of imbalanced data which is one of the challenging problems for building robust classification models, the proposed algorithm (SSD-SVM) was enhanced to deal with imbalanced data. In this study, eight standard imbalanced datasets were used for testing our proposed algorithm. For verification, the results of the SSD-SVM algorithm are compared with grid search, which is a conventional method of searching parameter values, and particle swarm optimization (PSO). The experimental results show that the SSD-SVM algorithm is capable of finding near-optimal values of SVMs parameters. The last few years have seen an increasing demand for high-capacity Internet services, and this need has intensified in the years 2020 and 2021. In 2020 and 2021, Internet usage grew by 50% in several European countries, mainly due to home office, video streaming, hybrid teaching, and others. High-capacity optical networks usually meet this growing demand for Internet services. Thus, investigations that can improve the quality of optical networks are highly relevant in the current context. One of the research problems in this area is related to the physical topology design (PTD) of optical networks, which is classified as NP-hard. Several studies on PTD consider the application of meta-heuristics that obtain suboptimal solutions in a time compatible with engineering applications. However, meta-heuristics and local search techniques have been combined in several other optimization problems, which is not typical for the PTD problem. This paper proposes a solution to the PTD problem that combines a known multipurpose optimization algorithm, the NSGA-III, with operators considering the domain-specific knowledge of the problem to provide superior-quality networks. The Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA) is a novel hunting-based optimizer. The MPA's central concept is based on the well-known Lévy Flight (LF) and Brownian Motion (BM) strategies as well as a simple transition model between these two strategies. The canonical MPA proposes three static steps to tune the transition behavior between the LF and BM strategies. Although MPA provides exemplary performance in many test functions, the discrete transition between the two mentioned phases causes it to get stuck in local optima when faced with real-world optimization problems. In order to address this shortcoming, this paper proposes a soft dynamic transition between LF and BM to model this encounter naturally, considering the continuous nature of the transition between LF and BM in marine predators' real life. In order to evaluate the performance of the developed Dynamic Foraging Strategy MPA (DFSMPA), twenty-nine optimization test functions, thirty complex CEC-BC-2017 functions, ten benchmarks of CEC06-2019 test suit, and ten real applicable engineering problems, including power system design, synthesis and process design, industrial chemical producer, power-electronic design, mechanical design, and animal feed ratio, are employed. The DFSMPA is evaluated against four groups of standard optimization approaches, including (1) Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (AOA), Slime Mould Algorithm (SMA), Equilibrium Optimizer (EO), Niching Chimp Optimization Algorithm (ChOA), Henry Gas Solubility Optimization (HGSO) as recent optimization algorithms, (2) Lévy Flight GWO (LGWO) and Evolutionary Algorithms with Adaptive Lévy Mutations (EALM) as the two best dynamic Lévy-based optimization algorithms, (3) SHADE, CMA-ES, and LSHADESPACMA as the three state-of-the-art optimization algorithms, and jDE100, DISHchain1e+12, CIPDE, and EBOwithCMAR as best performing algorithms in IEEE CEC06-2019 competition. Three non-parametric statistical tests, including the Wilcoxon rank-sum, Bonferroni–Dunn and Holm, and Friedman average rank tests, are utilized to perform a comprehensive assessment. The results show that the DFSMPA achieved the first rank among 46 out of 70 benchmark functions and engineering problems and exhibited similar results compared with SHADE and CMA-ES in other benchmarks. The statistical analysis demonstrated that DFSMPA is a significantly superior optimizer than the three first categories' benchmark algorithms, while its result is statistically similar to jDE100, DISHchain1e+12. Wind resource is one of the most promising renewable energy, which has become a suitable replacement for fossil fuels. Optimizing the transferring wind energy from a wind turbine is essential to obtain the maximum power output as other variables are uncontrollable. This paper presents four different optimization algorithms, namely ant lion optimization (ALO), whale optimization algorithm (WOA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and crow search optimization (CSO), considering a hybrid decision-making model to compare the performances of wind energy optimization. In the first phase, the evolutionary algorithms are defined based on several factors to meet the need for wind energy based on volumetric and time reliability, reversibility, and vulnerability as well as evaluate optimized energy to the subscriber from the Gansu region. In the second phase, the ordinal priority approach (OPA) is coupled with VIseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) method to rank the evolutionary algorithms. Then, the results are compared with the absolute optimal response based on the nonlinear programming method obtained from GAMS software. The results demonstrate that an ALO outperforms other algorithms. The average accuracy of ALO is 92%. CSO is the least accurate with 55% of the absolute optimal response. ALO is found to be faster, more efficient, and achieved economy and reliability as compared to other optimization algorithms for solving the problem under consideration. In addition, it is a population-based algorithm and it can be classified as both, swarm intelligence and evolutionary heuristics, because contributes with a different algorithmic structure. This paper proposes a binary version of the COA, named Binary COA (BCOA) applying to select the optimal feature subset for classification, based on the hyperbolic transfer function in a wrapper model. By this way, the features are selected based on the performance evaluation of a classification algorithm. We tested the effectiveness of the BCOA wrapper with the Naïve Bayes classifier and were used seven public domain benchmark datasets to compare the proposed approach in terms of classification accuracy, number of selected features and computational cost with other state-of-art algorithms of the literature.
