The location planning of relief distribution centres (DCs) is crucial in humanitarian logistics as it directly influences the disaster response and service to the affected victims. In light of the critical role of facility location in humanitarian logistics planning, the study proposes a two-stage relief distribution location problem. The first stage of the model determines the minimum number of relief DCs, and the second stage find the optimal location of these DCs to minimize the total cost. To address a more realistic situation, restrictions are imposed on the coverage area and capacity of each DCs. In addition, for optimally solving this complex NP-hard problem, a novel two-phase algorithm with exploration and exploitation phase is developed in the paper. The first phase of the algorithm i.e., exploration phase identifies a near-optimal solution while the second phase i.e. exploitation phase enhances the solution quality through a close circular proximity investigation. Furthermore, the comparative analysis of the proposed algorithm with other well-known algorithms such as genetic algorithm, pattern search, fmincon, multistart and hybrid heuristics is also reported and computationally tested from small to large data sets. The chimp optimization algorithm (ChOA) is a nature-inspired algorithm that imitates chimpanzees' individual intelligence and hunting behaviors. In this algorithm, the hunting process consists of four steps: driving, blocking, chasing, and attacking. Because of the novelty of ChOA, the steps of the hunting process have been modeled in the simplest possible way, leading to slow and premature convergence similar to other iterative algorithms. This paper proposes six spiral functions and introduces two novel hybrid spiral functions (SEB-ChOA) to rectify the abovementioned deficiencies. The SEB-ChOAs' performance is evaluated on 23 standard benchmarks, 20 benchmarks of IEEE CEC-2005, 10 cases of IEEE CEC06-2019 test-suite, and 12 constrained real-world engineering problems of IEEE CEC-2020. The SEB-ChOAs are compared with three groups of optimization algorithms, including Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) as the most well-known optimization algorithms, Slime Mould Algorithm (SMA), Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA), Ant Lion Optimization (ALO), Henry Gas Solubility Optimization (HGSO), as almost novel optimization algorithms, and jDE100 and DISHchain1e+12, as winners of IEEE CEC06-2019 competition, and also EBOwithCMAR and CIPDE as superior secondary optimization algorithms. The SEB-ChOAs reached the first rank among almost all benchmarks and demonstrated very competitive results compared to jDE100 and DISHchain1e+12 as the best-performing optimizers. Statistical evidence shows that the SEB-ChOA outperforms the PSO, GA, SMA, MPA, ALO, and HGSO optimizers while producing results comparable to those of the jDE100 and DISHchain1e+12 algorithms. Purpose: This paper aims to offer a hybrid genetic algorithm and the ant colony optimization (GA-ACO) algorithm for task mapping and resource management. The paper aims to reduce the makespan and total response time in fog computing- medical cyber-physical system (FC-MCPS). Design/methodology/approach: Swift progress in today's medical technologies has resulted in a new kind of health-care tool and therapy techniques like the MCPS. The MCPS is a smart and reliable mechanism of entrenched clinical equipment applied to check and manage the patients' physiological condition. However, the extensive-delay connections among cloud data centers and medical devices are so problematic. FC has been introduced to handle these problems. It includes a group of near-user edge tools named fog points that are collaborating until executing the processing tasks, such as running applications, reducing the utilization of a momentous bulk of data and distributing the messages. Task mapping is a challenging problem for managing fog-based MCPS. As mapping is an non-deterministic pol ynomial-time-hard optimization issue, this paper has proposed a procedure depending on the hybrid GA-ACO to solve this problem in FC-MCPS. ACO and GA, that is applied in their standard formulation and combined as hybrid meta-heuristics to solve the problem. As such ACO-GA is a hybrid meta-heuristic using ACO as the main approach and GA as the local search. GA-ACO is a memetic algorithm using GA as the main approach and ACO as local search. Findings: MATLAB is used to simulate the proposed method and compare it to the ACO and MACO algorithms. The experimental results have validated the improvement in makespan, which makes the method a suitable one for use in medical and real-time systems. Research limitations/implications: The proposed method can achieve task mapping in FC-MCPS by attaining high efficiency, which is very significant in practice. Meta-heuristics have been successfully applied to many complex optimization problems. One of the main reasons for its success is its ability to handle non-convex, nonlinear, multimodal, multi-variable, and multi-objective problems with easy implementation. However, the quality of the response of these algorithms to an optimization problem is highly susceptible to the control parameters, and few works aim to tune them or find tools that can improve the algorithms. The literature is rich in proposals for new algorithms, but not for improving existing ones. This paper presents different strategies for tuning and accelerating meta-heuristics using the first hybrid algorithm in the literature. The Lichtenberg algorithm is inspired by lightning and Lichtenberg figures and has been increasingly successfully applied to various optimization problems. However, a study of its best parameters has never been presented until now. After a discussion of the best tuning tools, its tuning parameters are performed using response surface methodology. Then, 14 versions are studied through 10 test functions using chaos theory and Lévy flights scenarios. After 13,500 simulations, the chaotic Lichtenberg algorithm equipped with the piecewise function and tuned parameters proved the best version with only 16% similarity to the original algorithm. Then, it was compared to the genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization, gray wolf optimizer, salp swarm optimization, whale optimization algorithm, and dragonfly algorithm. In this paper, a hybrid nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithm based on the Genetic Algorithm and the African Buffalo Optimization is proposed. The hybrid approach adaptively switches between the Genetic Algorithm and the African Buffalo Optimization during the optimization process, leveraging their respective strengths to improve performance. To improve randomness, the hybrid approach uses two high-quality pseudorandom number generators—the 64-bit and 32-bit versions of the SIMD-Oriented Fast Mersenne Twister. The effectiveness of the hybrid algorithm is evaluated on the NP-hard Container Relocation Problem, focusing on a test set of restricted Container Relocation Problems with higher complexity. The results show that the hybrid algorithm outperforms the individual Genetic Algorithm and the African Buffalo Optimization, which use standard pseudorandom number generators. The adaptive switch method allows the algorithm to adapt to different optimization problems and mitigate problems such as premature convergence and local optima. Moreover, the importance of pseudorandom number generator selection in metaheuristic algorithms is highlighted, as it directly affects the optimization results. The use of powerful pseudorandom number generators reduces the probability of premature convergence and local optima, leading to better optimization results. Traffic planning and management is an important task for governments to achieve a proper functioning of the cities. The configuration of road signs and traffic lights is part of this process. The selection of an appropriate configuration is modeled as a variant of the traffic light cycle optimization problem (TLCOP), which is NP-Hard. To evaluate the impact of each configuration, agent-based simulations can be performed. Based on the importance and complexity of the problem, the objective of this paper is to present and evaluate a metaheuristic scheme to solve it and analyze solutions obtained. In this paper, a new U-shaped assembly line balancing problem is studied. For the first time, the criteria such as equipment cost, number of stations and activity performing quality level are considered to be optimized simultaneously by activity to station and worker to station decisions. For this aim, a multi-objective nonlinear formulation is proposed and its linearized version is also presented. Since, according to the literature, the U-shaped assembly line balancing problem with equipment requirements is an NP-hard problem, the problem of this study is NP-hard too. Because of this complexity, the classical algorithms like simulated annealing, variable neighborhood search, and classical genetic algorithm with a novel encoding/decoding scheme are used as solution approaches. As an extension, two hybrid versions of the proposed classical algorithms are proposed according to the characteristics of the problem. In order to evaluate the proposed meta-heuristics, because the problem is new, some test problems are generated randomly. Computational study of the paper, including sensitivity analysis of the proposed meta-heuristics and final experiments on the test problems, proves the superiority of the hybrid versions of the classical algorithms. Recent studies show that the performance of Evolutionary Algorithms often depends on choosing appropriate parameter configurations. Thus, researchers have generally tuned these parameters either looking at the similar research areas in the literature or manually, e.g. Grid Search. However, searching the parameter manually is laborious and timeconsuming; therefore, meta-optimization techniques have become commonly used methods to adjust parameters of an algorithm. These techniques can be classified in two widespread manners: off-line, tuning parameters of an algorithm before the algorithm initiates, and on-line, tuning the parameters while it is working. In this paper, Bipolar Matching Tendency (BMT) algorithm has been chosen as the selection method of a Genetic Algorithm (GA). The new obtained algorithm is named GA-BMT and has been used for the first time as an online metaoptimizer. In addition, the paper utilizes two search algorithms (Grid Search, Coarse to Fine Search) with three meta-optimization methods (Standard GA, Particle Swarm Optimization, GA-BMT) to investigate the best parameter settings of the Standard GA for 17 test functions, and offers a comparative work by comparing their results. Furthermore, non-parametric statistical tests, Friedman and Wilcoxon Signed Rank, were performed to demonstrate the significance of the results. This paper addresses a new multi-level serial closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) model with an integrated formulation of batch deliveries, quality-dependent return rate, random defective rate, rework process, and learning effects. The vendor managed inventory contract has motivated companies to cope with the bullwhip effect and its associated shortages. However, getting precise information on manufacturing/remanufacturing time is a challenge owing to human learning. Accordingly, this paper tries to incorporate the learning effect on the inventory control problem. This is a bridge to fill the gaps in the literature by considering how the learning process affects the production time and system costs in a CLSC problem. Moreover, the mean-standard deviation utility function is used in order to take the random defective rate into account, to minimize mean system costs with respect to the standard deviation. Due to the complexity of the proposed mixed-integer nonlinear programming model, three metaheuristic algorithms named, genetic algorithm, invasive weed optimization algorithm, and moth flame optimization algorithm are used to solve the problem, and Fibonacci algorithm will examine the validity of the applied methods. Two sets of numerical examples in small, medium, and large sizes are presented to illustrate the performance of the algorithms in terms of objective function values and required CPU-time. Afterward, a statistical analysis is utilized in order to evaluate the proposed algorithms. In recent years, an increasing number of population-based metaheuristic algorithms have been proposed to solve the flexible job-shop scheduling problem (FJSP) according to its practicality and complexity. Most of these algorithms are single-population-based and hence are very susceptible to becoming trapped in local optimal values. Thus, multipopulation methods are widely used to improve these algorithms, resulting in multipopulation algorithms. These multipopulation algorithms have been widely studied in the context of single-layer complex networks recently. However, coupled networks used to control two (or more) algorithms simultaneously to get a better algorithm are always ignored in literature. Therefore, in this paper, using coupled scale-free networks (with different scaling exponents) to control the genetic algorithm (GA) and the invasive weed optimization (IWO) simultaneously, a multipopulation GA/IWO with coupled scale-free networks (MPGAIWO-SF) is proposed to solve FJSP. Then, we study how some parameters (e.g., subpopulation size, subpopulation number, and scaling exponent) of MPGAIWO-SF affect its performance, which is also ignored in literature. The simulation results illustrate that (1) the performance of MPGAIWO-SF is significantly improved compared with that of GA and IWO; (2) as the subpopulation size increases, the performance of MPGAIWO-SF first becomes better and then remains almost unchanged; (3) as the subpopulation number increases, the performance of MPGAIWO-SF first becomes better and then decreases rapidly; and (4) the performance of MPGAIWO-SF becomes worse slightly as the scaling exponent decreases. The minimum vertex cover problem (MVCP) is one of the well-known NP-complete problems that can be used to formulate numerous real-life applications. The MVCP has been solved using different approaches, exact, heuristic, and metaheuristic. Chemical reaction optimization (CRO) is a population-based metaheuristic algorithm that simulates what happens in chemical reactions to solve many problems. In this paper, the MVCP is solved using hybridization of a modified version of the CRO algorithm and the best-first search (BFS) algorithm. This hybridization is symbolized by MCROA-BFS. The BFS algorithm is exploited to generate initial populations with high-quality initial solutions in comparison with the random bit-vector (RBV) approach as a traditional approach for generating initial populations for several population-based metaheuristic algorithms. At first, the MCROA is evaluated analytically in terms of run time complexity. Then the performance of the MCROA is evaluated experimentally to show the effectiveness of exploiting the BFS in terms of quality of gained solutions and run time. The most valuable player algorithm (MVPA), genetic algorithm (GA), and hybrid CRO algorithm (HCROA) are metaheuristic algorithms that used the RBV approach to generate the initial population. MCROA-BFS is compared, under the selected performance metrics, with these metaheuristic algorithms in addition to MCROA with the RBV approach (MCROA-RBV). The conducted experiments were carried out using 18 instances of DIMACS and BHOSLIB benchmarks. The experimental results revealed the superiority of MCROA-BFS over MVPA, GA, and MCROA-RBV in terms of both performance metrics. Power system stabilizers (PSSs) are extensively used in generator units to enhance the transient stability of the power system. Hence, optimal tuning and placement of the parameters of PSS are crucial for the efficiency of the stabilizer. Researchers have been proposed many methods for optimizing such parameters. In this paper, the Crow search algorithm (CSA), which is based on the intelligence of crows, was employed in a single-machine infinite-bus (SMIB) system to determine the optimum parameters of the PSS. Modeling and simulation of the SMIB and designing of PSS were made by MATLAB/Simulink. PSSs are designed to minimize low-frequency oscillations such as power angle, rotor speed, and field current deviation following a large disturbance. Our objective in this study is the minimization of the rotor speed deviation. The results of the simulations proved the effectiveness and robustness of the optimization process compared to other metaheuristic algorithms such as particle swarm optimization (PSO) and genetic algorithm (GA). When compared to the performance attained by the GA-based and PSO-based PSS controller designs, the simulations show that the CSA-based PSS delivers a far better dynamic response when the system is disrupted. The CSA-based PSS settles 48.1% faster than the PSO-based PSS and 55.7% faster than the GA-based PSS. CSA has just 2 parameters to adjust, making it much easier to implement than other methods. These parameters for PSO and GA are 4 and 6. When CSA-based PSS is used in the SMIB system, overshoot and low-frequency oscillations are also significantly reduced compared to other methods. Optimisation of three-dimensional (3D) underground stope layouts is a computationally complex process since it involves the modelling of many variables and constraints. As the number of variables and constraints increases to reflect the actual mining practice, the model complexity and solution time tend to increase exponentially, making the optimisation problem intractable. Metaheuristic approaches have therefore been used predominantly to solve the problem, but do not guarantee 'true' optimality. To minimise this limitation, a dual interchange algorithm (DIA) was developed by combining the strengths of two metaheuristic generic algorithms, namely the particle swarm optimisation (PSO) and genetic algorithm (GA). The DIA performance was compared to that of the Mineable Shape Optimizer (MSO) on four different design scenarios. The DIA generated stope layout economic values (SLEV) for three scenarios which were 0.3%, 3.4%, and 8.3% higher than for MSO under fixed and variable stope width conditions, while MSO produced a SLEV which was 9.7% higher than the DIA for a fixed stope width. In this paper, we present a novel hybrid metaheuristic for the Knapsack Problem with Forfeits (KPF). KPF is a recently introduced generalization of the Knapsack Problem. In this variant, a penalty cost incurs whenever both items composing a so-called forfeit pair belong to the solution. Our proposed algorithm, called GA–CG Forfeits, combines the strengths of the Genetic and Carousel Greedy paradigms. In this work, we define the algorithm and compare it with two previously proposed heuristics on a set of benchmark instances. Cloud providers deliver heterogeneous virtual machines to run complicated jobs submitted by users. The task scheduling issue is formulated to a discrete optimization problem which is well-known NP-Hard. This paper presents a hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm based on genetic and thermodynamic simulated annealing algorithms to solve this problem. In the proposed algorithm, the genetic and simulated annealing algorithms have respective global and local search inclinations covering each other's shortcomings. A novel theorem is presented and applied to produce a semi-conducted initial population. In a used genetic algorithm with a global trend, the crossover operator is performed to explore search space. The thermodynamic simulated annealing algorithm is utilized to improve the efficiency, which considers entropy and energy difference concepts in the cooling schedule process. After obtaining a suitable solution, one of the three novel neighbor operators is randomly called to enhance the given solution potentially. In this way, the efficient balance between exploration and exploitation in the search space is achieved. Simulation results prove that the proposed hybrid algorithm has 10.17%, 9.31%, 7.76%, and 8.21% dominance in terms of makespan, schedule length ratio, speedup, and efficiency against other comparative algorithms. The main objective of this paper is to develop a hybrid predictor based on intelligence techniques for dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) to estimate the reference load voltage and self‐tuned voltage regulation to enhance voltage power quality issues. The best fitted predictor model is obtained by using the potential merits of metaheuristic algorithms coupled with Antlion Optimization (ALO) and Genetic Algorithm (GA). This article proposes ALO optimized multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network (NN) control algorithm for appropriate selection of weights and biases to generate the subsequent switching signal with lower error rates for load voltage estimation. The ANFIS‐GA control algorithm is implemented for automatic tuning of fuzzy rules with fewer membership functions (MFs) to obtain the perfect ANFIS (Takagi–Sugeno) predictive models for effective DC and AC link voltage regulation. The proposed hybrid controller counteracts the drawbacks of traditional ANN such as early convergence, slow learning mechanism, less probability of local entrapment, and difficulties to achieve the estimated target under parametric uncertainties, namely, sag, swell, unbalance, and distortion. The accuracy of the prediction model is computed by considering the error indices for the training and testing data set. Feature transformation methods can be used effectively to improve the performance of the machine learning techniques, such as classification and clustering, via enhancing the discrimination among the samples. Additionally, binary representation of features may be necessary in several circumstances. For example, distributed systems may have limited bandwidth, storage, and energy that necessitate rough quantization of the measurements. This paper proposes a random projection-based feature transformation method that maps the data points from the original space into a new binary space. In the proposed transformation method, the random projection process is formulated as an optimization problem. A modified chaotic version of the sine–cosine algorithm is used to find the optimal random projector. The performance of the proposed transformation method is validated using 15 standard UCI benchmark datasets against the linear discernment analysis. Moreover, it is compared to other metaheuristic-based feature reduction methods including the gray wolf optimizer, the genetic algorithm, and the antlion optimizer. Today, there are a lot of useful algorithms for covering array (CA) generation, one of the branches of combinatorial testing. The major CA challenge is the generation of an array with the minimum number of test cases (efficiency) in an appropriate run-time (performance), for large systems. CA generation strategies are classified into several categories: computational and meta-heuristic, to name the most important ones. Generally, computational strategies have high performance and yield poor results in terms of efficiency, in contrast, meta-heuristic strategies have good efficiency and lower performance. Among the strategies available, some are efficient strategies but suffer from low performance; conversely, some others have good performance, but is not such efficient. In general, there is not a strategy that enjoys both above-mentioned metrics. In this paper, it is tried to combine the genetic algorithm and the Augmented Lagrangian Particle Swarm Optimization with Fractional Order Velocity to produce the appropriate test suite in terms of efficiency and performance. Also, a simple and effective minimizing function is employed to increase efficiency. This study designs a new variant of the capacitated vehicle routing problem (CVRP) under a fuzzy environment. In CVRP, several vehicles start their journey from a central depot to provide services to different cities and finally return to the depot. This paper introduces an additional time beyond the service time at each city to fulfill the pre-ordered demands. The need for this excess service time is to provide the services to new customers who are not enlisted at the start of the process. It is a market enhancement step. The proposed model's main objective is to find the maximum time-dependent profit by using the optimum number of vehicles in an appropriate route and spending optimum excess service time in each city. The model considers travel time and travel cost as fuzzy numbers. An expected value model (EVM) is formulated using the credibility approach on fuzzy variables. A hybrid meta-heuristic method combining a genetic algorithm (GA) and bacteria foraging optimization algorithm (BFOA) is designed to solve the proposed model. Summary: The high peak‐to‐average power ratio (PAPR) is the main challenge of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Partial transmit sequence (PTS) is a useful approach to diminish the PAPR. Although the PTS approach significantly decreases the PAPR, it requires to explore all possible sequences of phase weighting factors. Hence, the computational cost exponentially increases with the number of divided subblocks. This paper proposes a novel PTS technique based on ant colony optimization (ACO) to diminish the high PAPR and computational cost of OFDM systems. By the new representation of phase factors as a graph, the improved ACO algorithm is combined with the PTS method to explore the optimal compound of the phase rotation factors. Simulation results represent that the proposed ACO‐based PTS approach significantly reduces the PAPR and improves the computational cost at the same time. A comparative analysis of the other meta‐heuristics shows that the ACO‐PTS approach outperforms the genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization, and gray wolf optimization in terms of reducing PAPR. Location and routing problems belong to well-known optimization ones, whose combinations have merged as a location-routing problem (LRP). Arc routing has recently become a popular interest of researchers. Accordingly, the location-arc routing problem (LARP) is defined. This paper deals with a location-arc routing problem when there are transportation decisions from suppliers to established depots (TLARP). It is addressed by developing a bi-objective mathematical model to optimize the total costs and makespan. An augmented ε-constraint algorithm is employed to find the true Pareto solutions. Then two meta-heuristics are considered: non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) and multi-objective late acceptance hill-climbing (MOLAHC) algorithm. There are four heuristics regarding NSGA-II, its combination with MOLAHC, and having/not having a local search (LS). Results demonstrate that NSGA-II+LS is the best and hybrid+LS is the second best heuristics while the solving time of hybrid+LS is significantly less than the time of NSGA-II+LS. Cloud computing delivers practical solutions for long-term image archiving systems. Cloud data centers consume enormous amounts of electrical energy that increases their operational costs. This shows the importance of investing on energy consumption techniques. Dynamic placement of virtual machines to appropriate physical nodes using metaheuristic algorithms is among the methods of reducing energy consumption. In metaheuristic algorithms, there should be a balance between both exploration and exploitation aspects so that they can find better solutions in a search space. Exploration means looking for a solution in a wider area, while exploitation is producing new solutions from existence ones. Artificial bee colony optimization, which is a biological metaheuristic algorithm, is a sign-oriented approach. It has a strong exploration ability, but a relatively weaker exploitation power. On the other hand, tabu search is a popular algorithm that shows better exploitation in comparison with ABC. In this study, cloud computing environments are detailed with an allocation protocol for efficient energy and resource management. The technique of energy-aware allocation splits data centers (DCs) resources among client applications end routes to enhance energy efficacy of DCs and also achieves anticipated quality of service (QoS) for everyone. Heuristic protocols are exercised for optimizing the distribution of resources to upgrade the efficiency of DC. In the current paper, energy-aware resources allotment technique is employed and optimized in clouds via a new approach called Tabu Job Master (JM). Tabu JM claims the benefits of some variables and also rapid convergence speeds. Results are duly achieved for energy consumption—the count of virtual machines (VMs) migration and also makespan. A significant number of search and optimisation techniques whose principles seek inspiration from nature and biology phenomena have been proposed in the last decades. These methods have been successfully applied to solve a wide range of engineering problems. This is also the case of greenhouse environment control, which has been incorporating this type of techniques into its design. This paper addresses evolutionary and bio-inspired methods in the context of greenhouse environment control. Algorithm principles for reference techniques are reviewed, namely: simulated annealing, genetic algorithm, differential evolution and particle swarm optimisation. This paper presents a hybrid scheme based on two population-based metaheuristic techniques, namely genetic algorithm (GA) and cuckoo search (CS). In particular, the hybrid is formed by the application of standard simple genetic algorithms (SGA) and CS, specifically adapted and for first time applied by the authors for the purposes of parameter identification of yeast fed-batch fermentation process model. The parameters of the hybrid technique SGA-CS have been thoroughly explored and tuned to meet the specific peculiarities of the considered here optimization problem. A comparison of SGA, CS and developed hybrid SGA-CS has been performed, outlining the advantages and disadvantages of each algorithm. Additionally, a new modification of SGA-CS hybrid technique, inspired by proven as very effective modification of SGA, working with implementation of main genetic operators in order crossover, mutation and selection, has been here elaborated. Summary: In the electrical grids, the main target of the controller design is represented in the decreasing of the settling time and the overshoot of frequency deviations. The optimization of the controller gains represents the main challenge that affects the controller performance. Many intelligence techniques are used for the tuning of the controller gains such as the genetic algorithm (GA) and the bacterial foraging optimization algorithm (BFOA). These algorithms may have some drawbacks when the complexity of the system increases. These drawbacks may be due to the design method of the gain selection of the proportional‐integral (PI) controller. The design method may characterize the PI controller to reduce the maximum overshoot of the system response but the settling time increases. On the contrary, another different design method may characterize the PI controller to reduce the settling time of the system response but the maximum overshoot increases. This paper suggests a new variable structure gain scheduling (VSGS) for frequency regulation. The VSGS can take advantage of the BFOA‐based PI controller, which is the minimization of settling time, and the advantage of the GA‐based PI controller, which is the minimization of overshoot. Abstract Selection of primary controlled variables (CVs) with due consideration of economic loss and ease of control is an important step for achieving optimal plant operation under design and off-design conditions. However, the computational expense of the combinatorial optimization step that is undertaken for CV selection renders the existing approaches unaffordable for fast selection of optimal CVs. Two approaches are proposed in this paper for improving the computational efficiency of the optimization step. Typically, the CV selection process is typically executed by considering the entire plant together. Opposed to that, the first approach proposed here seeks to decompose the process plant into multiple partitions based on the connectivity strength. Then the CV selection algorithm can be executed on each partition independently. The decomposition algorithm is biomimetic and has been developed, in analogy to neuroscience, mimicking how the information about the connectivity information is extracted using a dynamic casual model. This approach can significantly decrease the number of combinatorial optimization problems that needs to be solved and facilitates parallelization of the solution. In the second approach, a multiagent optimization framework is proposed that utilizes metaheuristic optimization strategies such as the efficient ant colony algorithm, simulated annealing and the genetic algorithm. These two approaches can be used by themselves or in combination. This framework enables cooperative search by a group of algorithmic agents facilitated through an information sharing protocol. These two approaches are applied to a toy problem and an acid gas removal unit as part of an integrated gasification combined cycle. Graph drawing, or the automatic layout of graphs, is a challenging problem. There are several search based methods for graph drawing which are based on optimizing an objective function which is formed from a weighted sum of multiple criteria. In this paper, we propose a new neighbourhood search method which uses a tabu search coupled with path relinking to optimize such objective functions for general graph layouts with undirected straight lines. To our knowledge, before our work, neither of these methods have been previously used in general multi-criteria graph drawing. Tabu search uses a memory list to speed up searching by avoiding previously tested solutions, while the path relinking method generates new solutions by exploring paths that connect high quality solutions. We use path relinking periodically within the tabu search procedure to speed up the identification of good solutions. We have evaluated our new method against the commonly used neighbourhood search optimization techniques: hill climbing and simulated annealing. Our evaluation examines the quality of the graph layout (objective function’s value) and the speed of layout in terms of the number of evaluated solutions required to draw a graph. We also examine the relative scalability of each method. Our experimental results were applied to both random graphs and a real-world dataset. We show that our method outperforms both hill climbing and simulated annealing by producing a better layout in a lower number of evaluated solutions. In addition, we demonstrate that our method has greater scalability as it can layout larger graphs than the state-of-the-art neighbourhood search methods. Collaborative beamforming (CBF) with a finite number of collaborating nodes (CNs) produces sidelobes that are highly dependent on the collaborating nodes’ locations. The sidelobes cause interference and affect the communication rate of unintended receivers located within the transmission range. Nulling is not possible in an open-loop CBF since the collaborating nodes are unable to receive feedback from the receivers. Hence, the overall sidelobe reduction is required to avoid interference in the directions of the unintended receivers. However, the impact of sidelobe reduction on the capacity improvement at the unintended receiver has never been reported in previous works. In this paper, the effect of peak sidelobe (PSL) reduction in CBF on the capacity of an unintended receiver is analyzed. Three meta-heuristic optimization methods are applied to perform PSL minimization, namely genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm algorithm (PSO) and a simplified version of the PSO called the weightless swarm algorithm (WSA). An average reduction of 20 dB in PSL alongside 162% capacity improvement is achieved in the worst case scenario with the WSA optimization. Document clustering can be applied in document organisation and browsing, document summarisation and classification. The identification of an appropriate representation for textual documents is extremely important for the performance of clustering or classification algorithms. Textual documents suffer from the high dimensionality and irrelevancy of text features. Besides, conventional clustering algorithms suffer from several shortcomings, such as slow convergence and sensitivity to the initial value. To tackle the problems of conventional clustering algorithms, metaheuristic algorithms are frequently applied to clustering. In this paper, an improved ant clustering algorithm is presented, where two novel heuristic methods are proposed to enhance the clustering quality of ant-based clustering. In addition, the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) is used to represent textual documents in a compact and efficient way. The clustering quality of the proposed ant clustering algorithm is compared to the conventional clustering algorithms using 25 text benchmarks in terms of F-measure values. Comprehensive learning particle swarm optimization (CLPSO) is a powerful state-of-the-art single-objective metaheuristic. Extending from CLPSO, this paper proposes multiswarm CLPSO (MSCLPSO) for multiobjective optimization. MSCLPSO involves multiple swarms, with each swarm associated with a separate original objective. Each particle’s personal best position is determined just according to the corresponding single objective. Elitists are stored externally. MSCLPSO differs from existing multiobjective particle swarm optimizers in three aspects. First, each swarm focuses on optimizing the associated objective using CLPSO, without learning from the elitists or any other swarm. Second, mutation is applied to the elitists and the mutation strategy appropriately exploits the personal best positions and elitists. Third, a modified differential evolution (DE) strategy is applied to some extreme and least crowded elitists. The DE strategy updates an elitist based on the differences of the elitists. The personal best positions carry useful information about the Pareto set, and the mutation and DE strategies help MSCLPSO discover the true Pareto front. The efficiency of a metaheuristic algorithm for global optimization is based on its ability to search and find the global optimum. However, a good search often requires to be balanced between exploration and exploitation of the search space. In this paper, a new metaheuristic algorithm called Ringed Seal Search (RSS) is introduced. It is inspired by the natural behavior of the seal pup. This algorithm mimics the seal pup movement behavior and its ability to search and choose the best lair to escape predators. The scenario starts once the seal mother gives birth to a new pup in a birthing lair that is constructed for this purpose. The seal pup strategy consists of searching and selecting the best lair by performing a random walk to find a new lair. Affected by the sensitive nature of seals against external noise emitted by predators, the random walk of the seal pup takes two different search states, normal state and urgent state. In the normal state, the pup performs an intensive search between closely adjacent lairs; this movement is modeled via a Brownian walk. In an urgent state, the pup leaves the proximity area and performs an extensive search to find a new lair from sparse targets; this movement is modeled via a Levy walk. The switch between these two states is realized by the random noise emitted by predators. The algorithm keeps switching between normal and urgent states until the global optimum is reached. Tests and validations were performed using fifteen benchmark test functions to compare the performance of RSS with other baseline algorithms. The results show that RSS is more efficient than Genetic Algorithm, Particles Swarm Optimization and Cuckoo Search in terms of convergence rate to the global optimum. The RSS shows an improvement in terms of balance between exploration (extensive) and exploitation (intensive) of the search space. Currently, the genetic algorithm (GA) technique has been used in finance-based scheduling to devise critical path method (CPM) schedules exhibiting cash flows of periodical finance needs below preset cash constraints. The chromosomes of the schedules that violate this condition are referred to as finance-infeasible chromosomes. Infeasibility related to finance is peculiar to finance-based scheduling problems. In scheduling problems, chromosomes that are infeasible based on precedence relationships are typically penalized. This paper introduces a repair algorithm for the finance-infeasible chromosomes generated within the GA systems. The repair algorithm identifies the periods exhibiting finance needs that exceed the constrained cash, calculates the amounts of finance needs above the constraints, identifies the ongoing activities, selects randomly an activity for delaying its start time, determines the impact of the delay on the finance needs, and repeats the procedure until finance feasibility is attained. A 13-activity project was used to demonstrate the proposed repair algorithm. The performance of the repaired-chromosome GA system is evaluated through comparison against replaced-chromosome and penalized-chromosome GA systems using a fairly big project of 210 activities. Finally, the results that were validated using the integer programming technique proved the superior performance of the repaired-chromosome GA in terms of the computational cost and quality of solutions. The performance efficiency of the proposed technique is demonstrated on IEEE 30 BUS test system consisting of four thermal units and two hydro power plants. A wide range of thermal, hydraulic, and security constraints such as real power balance constraint, ramp rate, minimum up/down time, minimum and maximum limits of thermal and hydro units, prohibited operating zones (POZ), valve point effect, spinning reserve, available production, water dynamic balance and transmission line constraint are taken into account. The simulation results obtained from the new binary/real GA are compared with the outcomes obtained from some heuristic methods, such as DA-PSO and PSO-GWO to reveal the validity and verify the feasibility of the proposed technique. Transmission expansion planning (TEP), the determination of new transmission lines to be added to an existing power network, is a key element in power system planning. Using classical optimization to define the most suitable reinforcements is the most desirable alternative. However, the extent of the under-study problems is growing, because of the uncertainties introduced by renewable generation or electric vehicles (EVs) and the larger sizes under consideration given the trends for higher renewable shares and stronger market integration. This means that classical optimization, even using efficient techniques, such as stochastic decomposition, can have issues when solving large-sized problems. This is compounded by the fact that, in many cases, it is necessary to solve a large number of instances of a problem in order to incorporate further considerations. Thus, it can be interesting to resort to metaheuristics, which can offer quick solutions at the expense of an optimality guarantee. Metaheuristics can even be combined with classical optimization to try to extract the best of both worlds. There is a vast literature that tests individual metaheuristics on specific case studies, but wide comparisons are missing. In this paper, a genetic algorithm (GA), orthogonal crossover based differential evolution (OXDE), grey wolf optimizer (GWO), moth–flame optimization (MFO), exchange market algorithm (EMA), sine cosine algorithm (SCA) optimization and imperialistic competitive algorithm (ICA) are tested and compared. The algorithms are applied to the standard test systems of IEEE 24, and 118 buses. Bio-inspired computing is an emerging paradigm which is based on the basics and inspiration of natural phenomena to design new and robust competing techniques. Various nature science areas have motivated the inspiration for the design of new intelligent systems. Chemical engineering is one of them. In Chemistry, the vapor-liquid equilibrium process describes the distribution of chemical species combining two essential phases: vapor phase and liquid phase. Using a binary system of compounds is possible to simulate a search process based on the equilibrium between both phases. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm inspired by this chemical phenomenon for solving a new patient bed assignment problem. This problem consists of assigning patients to beds by considering relevant medical requirements trying to maximize the most covered soft constraints. For that, we take a traditional model, and we transform it by using the constraint optimization paradigm. We test our algorithm on 30 benchmarks taken of Chilean health services. To verify results, we perform statistical comparatives with artificial bee algorithm, ant colony optimization, the bat method, cuckoo search, genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization, and a random strategy. Computational experiments illustrate that the VLE algorithm properly solved 30 instances, finding all global optimal. In nineteen instances, VLE converged towards the best solution in its median value. In ten instances, the median, the average and the best value, all of them achieved the global optimal. Now, when comparing VLE against other techniques, we can note that VLE is surpassed by the artificial bee colony in two instances only. Many real-life systems in production and transportation logistics are complex, large-scale, and stochastic in nature. As a consequence, simheuristic approaches – which integrate simulation inside a metaheuristic framework – are becoming increasingly popular in the optimization and simulation communities. In a simheuristic algorithm, time-consuming simulation runs are required in order to: (i) obtain accurate results on the stochastic performance of solutions generated by the metaheuristic; and (ii) provide feedback that can be useful to better guide the metaheuristic search. If the underlying system is complex, discrete-event simulation might be needed, and then the simulation component could easily overrun the computational time of the metaheuristic component. Thus, for each new solution generated by the metaheuristic, several related questions arise: (i) should the simulation component be applied to that solution? – i.e., is that solution 'promising' enough to invest additional computational time on retrieving information about its performance in a stochastic environment?; and (ii) if so, how many simulation runs are needed in order to obtain useful information (i.e., statistics with a minimum level of accuracy)? This paper discusses these issues and proposes several concepts that allow to improve the efficiency (in terms of computational time) of simheuristic algorithms. A case study, based on a typical manufacturing system, is introduced. In order to illustrate and test different speeding-up techniques, the system is optimized by using a simheuristic that integrates a genetic algorithm with discrete-event simulation. This paper investigated the performance of a radial flow turbine by coupling metaheuristic algorithms with Computational Fluid Dynamics. We performed the optimization of the casing and wheel of the turbine simultaneously. The computer codes of four metaheuristic algorithms, namely the Genetic Algorithm, Flower Pollination Algorithm, Grey Wolf Optimizer, and the Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm were developed using MATLAB. The optimization results indicated that Grey Wolf Optimizer is the most powerful algorithm to achieve a higher temperature drop in comparison with other algorithms. Revealed by the study, choosing the best angle at the blade inlet is the most influential factor for efficiency improvement. Besides, casing optimization has a positive effect on the pressure recovery of the turbine by eliminating swirling flow. A comparison of the physics of fluid in the optimized and base wheel showed that the flow is more attached to the optimized blade since the backward-facing step produces a favorable pressure gradient mainly in the recirculating bubble. Employing pulsating flow confirmed that the efficiency of the optimized turbine has a significant increase in comparison to the base turbine by more than 2% in high mass flow rates. Shelf space is a scarce and expensive resource in the retail industry because a large number of products compete for limited display space. Thus, shelf-space allocation is frequently implemented in shops to increase product sales and profits. In the past few decades, numerous models and solution methods have been developed to deal with the shelf-space allocation problem (SSAP). In this paper, a novel population-oriented metaheuristic algorithm, teaching–learning-based optimization (TLBO) is applied to solve the problem and compared with existing solution methods with respect to their solution performance. Further, a hybrid algorithm that combines TLBO with variable neighborhood search (VNS) is proposed to enhance the performance of the basic TLBO. The research results show that the proposed TLBO-VNS algorithm is superior to other algorithms in terms of solution performance, in addition to using fewer control parameters.
