Disease diagnosis represents a critical and arduous endeavor within the medical field. Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, spanning from machine learning and deep learning to large model paradigms, stand poised to significantly augment physicians in rendering more evidence-based decisions, thus presenting a pioneering solution for clinical practice. Traditionally, the amalgamation of diverse medical data modalities (e.g., image, text, speech, genetic data, physiological signals) is imperative to facilitate a comprehensive disease analysis, a topic of burgeoning interest among both researchers and clinicians in recent times. Hence, there exists a pressing need to synthesize the latest strides in multi-modal data and AI technologies in the realm of medical diagnosis. In this paper, we narrow our focus to five specific disorders (Alzheimer's disease, breast cancer, depression, heart disease, epilepsy), elucidating advanced endeavors in their diagnosis and treatment through the lens of artificial intelligence. Our survey not only delineates detailed diagnostic methodologies across varying modalities but also underscores commonly utilized public datasets, the intricacies of feature engineering, prevalent classification models, and envisaged challenges for future endeavors. The use of radiomics and artificial intelligence applied for the diagnosis and monitoring of Alzheimer's disease has developed in recent years. However, this approach is not yet completely applicable in clinical practice. The aim of this paper is to provide a systematic analysis of the studies that have included the use of radiomics from different imaging techniques and artificial intelligence for the diagnosis and monitoring of Alzheimer's disease in order to improve the clinical outcomes and quality of life of older patients. A systematic review of the literature was conducted in February 2023, analyzing manuscripts and articles of the last 5 years from the PubMed, Scopus and Embase databases. All studies concerning discrimination among Alzheimer's disease, Mild Cognitive Impairment and healthy older people performing radiomics analysis through machine and deep learning were included. A total of 15 papers were included. The results showed a very good performance of this approach in the differentiating Alzheimer's disease patients—both at the dementia and pre-dementia phases of the disease—from healthy older people. In summary, radiomics and AI can be valuable tools for diagnosing and monitoring the progression of Alzheimer's disease, potentially leading to earlier and more accurate diagnosis and treatment. Background: The progressive aging of populations, primarily in the industrialized western world, is accompanied by the increased incidence of several non-transmittable diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases and adult-onset dementia disorders. To stimulate adequate interventions, including treatment and preventive measures, an early, accurate diagnosis is necessary. Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) represents a technique quite common for the diagnosis of neurological disorders. Increasing evidence indicates that the association of artificial intelligence (AI) approaches with MRI is particularly useful for improving the diagnostic accuracy of different dementia types. Objectives: In this work, we have systematically reviewed the characteristics of AI algorithms in the early detection of adult-onset dementia disorders, and also discussed its performance metrics. Methods: A document search was conducted with three databases, namely PubMed (Medline), Web of Science, and Scopus. The search was limited to the articles published after 2006 and in English only. The screening of the articles was performed using quality criteria based on the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS) rating. Only papers with an NOS score ≥ 7 were considered for further review. Results: The document search produced a count of 1876 articles and, because of duplication, 1195 papers were not considered. Multiple screenings were performed to assess quality criteria, which yielded 29 studies. All the selected articles were further grouped based on different attributes, including study type, type of AI model used in the identification of dementia, performance metrics, and data type. Conclusions: The most common adult-onset dementia disorders occurring were Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. AI techniques associated with MRI resulted in increased diagnostic accuracy ranging from 73.3% to 99%. These findings suggest that AI should be associated with conventional MRI techniques to obtain a precise and early diagnosis of dementia disorders occurring in old age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Disease severity identification using computational intelligence-based approaches is gaining popularity nowadays. Artificial intelligence and deep-learning-assisted approaches are proving to be significant in the rapid and accurate diagnosis of several diseases. In addition to disease identification, these approaches have the potential to identify the severity of a disease. The problem of disease severity identification can be considered multi-class classification, where the class labels are the severity levels of the disease. Plenty of computational intelligence-based solutions have been presented by researchers for severity identification. This paper presents a comprehensive review of recent approaches for identifying disease severity levels using computational intelligence-based approaches. We followed the PRISMA guidelines and compiled several works related to the severity identification of multidisciplinary diseases of the last decade from well-known publishers, such as MDPI, Springer, IEEE, Elsevier, etc. This article is devoted toward the severity identification of two main diseases, viz. Parkinson's Disease and Diabetic Retinopathy. However, severity identification of a few other diseases, such as COVID-19, autonomic nervous system dysfunction, tuberculosis, sepsis, sleep apnea, psychosis, traumatic brain injury, breast cancer, knee osteoarthritis, and Alzheimer's disease, was also briefly covered. Each work has been carefully examined against its methodology, dataset used, and the type of disease on several performance metrics, accuracy, specificity, etc. In addition to this, we also presented a few public repositories that can be utilized to conduct research on disease severity identification. We hope that this review not only acts as a compendium but also provides insights to the researchers working on disease severity identification using computational intelligence-based approaches. Purpose: Advanced machine learning (ML) algorithms can assist rapid medical image recognition and realize automatic, efficient, noninvasive, and convenient diagnosis. We aim to further evaluate the diagnostic performance of ML to distinguish patients with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) from normal older adults based on structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods: The Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant literature published up until July 2021. We used the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 (QUADAS-2) tool and Checklist for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging (CLAIM) to evaluate all included studies' quality and potential bias. Random-effects models were used to calculate pooled sensitivity and specificity, and the Deeks' test was used to assess publication bias. Results: We included 24 models based on different brain features extracted by ML algorithms in 19 papers. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, diagnostic odds ratio, and area under the summary receiver operating characteristic curve for ML in detecting AD were 0.85 (95%CI 0.81–0.89), 0.88 (95%CI 0.84–0.91), 7.15 (95%CI 5.40–9.47), 0.17 (95%CI 0.12–0.22), 43.34 (95%CI 26.89–69.84), and 0.93 (95%CI 0.91–0.95). Conclusion: ML using structural MRI data performed well in diagnosing probable AD patients and normal elderly. However, more high-quality, large-scale prospective studies are needed to further enhance the reliability and generalizability of ML for clinical applications before it can be introduced into clinical practice. In recent years, deep learning has been successfully applied to medical image analysis and provided assistance to medical professionals. Machine learning is being used to offer diagnosis suggestions, identify regions of interest in images, or augment data to remove noise. Training models for such tasks require a large amount of labeled data. It is often difficult to procure such data due to the fact that these requires experts to manually label them, in addition to the privacy and legal concerns that limiting their collection. Due to this, creating self-supervision learning methods and domain-adaptation techniques dedicated to this domain is essential. This paper reviews concepts from the field of deep learning and how they have been applied to medical image analysis. We also review the current state of self-supervised learning methods and their applications to medical images. Alzheimer's an irreversible neurodegenerative disease with the most far-reaching impact, the most extensive, and the most difficult to cure in the world. It is also the most common disease of Alzheimer's disease. With the rapid rise of data mining, machine learning and other fields, they have penetrated various disciplines. In particular, research in the field of AD is developing rapidly and has demonstrated strong vitality. In terms of data, Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) researchers collect, verify and use a variety of data modalities as predictors of disease, including MRI and PET images, genetics, cognitive testing, cerebrospinal fluid and blood biomarkers, etc. Therefore, this paper uses a multi-task learning algorithm based on the ADNI data set to implement regression tasks and predict the cognitive scores of subjects in the next 3 years. This method can effectively assess the cognitive trends of patients in the future and aims to predict the progression of the disease. In addition, we used four different machine learning classification algorithms to conduct fusion research on AD multi-modal data, including MRI, PET, and cognitive scoring data. This method can determine the current patient's cognitive stage, to achieve the effect of assisting doctors in diagnosis. Finally, we designed a multi-modal data platform technical architecture to standardize management and sharing of ADNI data and data obtained by offline medical institutions to improve the utilization and value of data. The design of the technical architecture proposed in this article is more easily scalable and compatible with other neurological diseases. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia that still has no effective treatment. Accurate classification of AD can help in its diagnosis and selection of the most effective treatment options. In the last decade, several studies have proven the effectiveness of deep learning algorithms for AD diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a U-net style model for AD diagnosis using 3D T1-weighted magnetic resonance images (MRI). Combining with deep supervision has been proved to be effective in improving the performance of the model. Our method has been tested on a subset of ADNI dataset and AIBL dataset and achieves a superior average accuracy of 95.71 ± 1.36 % for AD versus NC (normal control), 90.14 ± 3.66 % for EMCI (early mild cognitive impairment) versus LMCI (late mild cognitive impairment), 90.05 ± 2.63 % for AD versus LMCI, and 87.98 ± 4.54 % for NC versus EMCI, respectively. Besides these binary-classification tasks, we also test this model for multi-class classification task (AD vs. NC vs. EMCI vs. LMCI) and it achieves an accuracy of 86.47 ± 9.60 % . Furthermore, 3D-Grad-CAM method is used to visualize the focused areas of the proposed model. We find that the proposed model pays more attention to the characteristics of the ventricles, hippocampus, and some regions of cortex, which have been proven to be affected by AD. The path signature is a means of feature generation that can encode nonlinear interactions in data in addition to the usual linear terms. It provides interpretable features and its output is a fixed length vector irrespective of the number of input points or their sample times. In this paper we use the path signature to provide features for identifying people whose diagnosis subsequently converts to Alzheimer’s disease. In two separate classification tasks we distinguish converters from 1) healthy individuals, and 2) individuals with mild cognitive impairment. The data used are time-ordered measurements of the whole brain, ventricles and hippocampus from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). We find two nonlinear interactions which are predictive in both cases. The first interaction is change of hippocampal volume with time, and the second is a change of hippocampal volume relative to the volume of the whole brain. While hippocampal and brain volume changes are well known in Alzheimer’s disease, we demonstrate the power of the path signature in their identification and analysis without manual feature selection. Sequential data is becoming increasingly available as monitoring technology is applied, and the path signature method is shown to be a useful tool in the processing of this data. Recent studies on brain imaging analysis witnessed the core roles of machine learning techniques in computer-assisted intervention for brain disease diagnosis. Of various machine-learning techniques, sparse regression models have proved their effectiveness in handling high-dimensional data but with a small number of training samples, especially in medical problems. In the meantime, deep learning methods have been making great successes by outperforming the state-of-the-art performances in various applications. In this paper, we propose a novel framework that combines the two conceptually different methods of sparse regression and deep learning for Alzheimer’s disease/mild cognitive impairment diagnosis and prognosis. Specifically, we first train multiple sparse regression models, each of which is trained with different values of a regularization control parameter. Thus, our multiple sparse regression models potentially select different feature subsets from the original feature set; thereby they have different powers to predict the response values, i.e. , clinical label and clinical scores in our work. By regarding the response values from our sparse regression models as target-level representations , we then build a deep convolutional neural network for clinical decision making, which thus we call ‘ Deep Ensemble Sparse Regression Network .’ To our best knowledge, this is the first work that combines sparse regression models with deep neural network. In our experiments with the ADNI cohort, we validated the effectiveness of the proposed method by achieving the highest diagnostic accuracies in three classification tasks. Alzheimers disease (AD) is a complex neurodegenerative disease. Its early diagnosis and treatment have been a major concern of researchers. Currently, the multi-modality data representation learning of this disease is gradually becoming an emerging research field, attracting widespread attention. However, in practice, data from multiple modalities are only partially available, and most of the existing multi-modal learning algorithms can not deal with the incomplete multi-modality data. In this paper, we propose an Auto-Encoder based Multi-View missing data Completion framework (AEMVC) to learn common representations for AD diagnosis. Specifically, we firstly map the original complete view to a latent space using an auto-encoder network framework. Then, the latent representations measuring statistical dependence learned from the complete view are used to complement the kernel matrix of the incomplete view in the kernel space. Meanwhile, the structural information of original data and the inherent association between views are maintained by graph regularization and Hilbert-Schmidt Independence Criterion (HSIC) constraints. Finally, a kernel based multi-view method is applied to the learned kernel matrix for the acquisition of common representations.
