The article presents a brief introduction of "10th International Symposium in Medical Geography," which was held in Manchester, England in the year of 2003. It represents a selection of papers presented at the Symposium. The conference attracted participants from 23 countries and saw over 100 presentations given over 4 days. The program covered the breadth of contemporary research in medical/health geographies with sessions focusing on issues of health, disease as well as qualitative and quantitative methods. The breadth of papers presented reflected the considerable changes seen in medical geography over the last decade which has, in many ways, reinvigorated our sub-discipline.

The article reports on the celebration held at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, England in line with the launch of the Artists' Papers Register, an online register of documents relating to designers, artists and craftspeople. This paper adds to the limited evidence base around documentary representation of the wishes, feelings and views of children and young people involved in the child protection system. It presents the findings of a critical discourse analysis of 114 documents relating to 28 children and young people in the North of England who were the subject of a child protection conference (CPC) due to having experienced significant harm or the high likelihood of significant harm occurring. Three dominant and interlayering discourses were identified: a discourse of childhood, a discourse of participation and a discourse of professional social work practice. While some children and young people came to life in the reports and were afforded a unique identity, others were invisible and their views were marginalized. The findings support a dominant discourse of the unseen and unheard child, with participation normally mediated by power relationships between adults and children, and which marginalizes the experiences of children through a structurally constructed lens of risk and vulnerability. The findings signify the need to establish assessment practices and case reporting systems in which children are heard themselves as well as reported on by others. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents abstracts of papers presented at City University Centenary Conference, in London, England on June 1, 1994. All the speakers at the conference were former undergraduate or postgraduate students of the Department of Optometry and Visual Science at the university. One of the papers focused on the correction of presbyopia. According to researcher M.H. Freeman, any corrective device for presbyopia must provide acceptable optical quality over the corrective effect required. Another paper talked about the ocular response to sustained visual tasks. Various other topics on which papers were presented included retinoscopy, corneal regeneration and glaucoma.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to reflect upon the challenges posed for the ongoing implementation of multi-agency risk assessment conferences (MARACs) for police forces in England and Wales during the 2020 pandemic. Design/methodology/approach: This is rapid response research involving qualitative methods primarily online semi-structured interviewing with a sample of police domestic abuse leads in England and Wales. Findings: The findings point to increased use of virtual platforms particularly for MARACs and that this has beneficial consequences both for the police and in their view also for victim-survivors. Research limitations/implications: The findings reported here are from policing domestic abuse leads. More work needs to be done to explore the value of engaging in virtual MARACs for all the agencies concerned but also whether MARACs continue to be the best way to ensure the victim-survivor is kept in view. Practical implications: The use of virtual platforms carries a range of practice implications for the future of MARACs for the foreseeable future. These range from ensuring attendance of the appropriate agencies to the range and frequency of meetings, to infrastructural support for all agencies to engage. Originality/value: This is an original study funded by the Economic and Social Research Council examining police and court responses to domestic abuse during the covid-19 pandemic. AESOP's 2009 Congress was hosted by the University of Liverpool as part of the centenary celebration of its Department of Civic Design, the world's oldest university planning school. 'Why Can't the Future be More Like the Past?' was the conference title on all the banners and conference bags - an oddly querulous question, nevertheless it did the trick in getting participants to think historically throughout AESOP 2009. Michael Hebbert and Dirk Schubert ran a planning history track for six of the conference's seven parallel session slots. Their call for papers elicited 30 abstracts which reduced to 17 papers, a comfortable quantity allowing good time for presentation and discussion. The track had the fortune to be allocated a wood-panelled Architecture lecture theatre with superb projection facilities - more than one speaker gasped at the glory of their own PowerPoint images. The mouth may be presented and understood in different ways, be subject to judgement by others and, as we age, may intrude on everyday life due to problems that affect oral health. However, research that considers older people's experiences concerning their mouths and teeth is limited. This paper reports on qualitative research with 43 people in England and Scotland, aged 65–91, exploring the significance of the mouth over the lifecourse. It uses the concept of 'mouth talk' to explore narratives of maintaining, losing and replacing teeth. Participants engaged in 'mouth talk' to downplay the impact of the mouth, demonstrate socially appropriate ageing, and distance themselves from 'real' old age by retaining a moral identity and sense of self. They also found means to challenge dominant discourses of ageing in how they spoke about missing teeth. Referring to Leder's notion of 'dys-appearance' and Gilleard and Higgs' work on the social imaginary of the fourth age, the study illustrates the ways in which 'mouth talk' can contribute to sustaining a sense of self in later life, presenting the ageing mouth, with and without teeth, as an absent presence. It also argues for the importance of listening to stories of the mouth in order to expand understanding of people's approaches to oral health in older age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The author reflects on the 7th International Conference on Computation in Electromagnetics (CEM) held in Brighton, England in April 2008. He thinks that the developments in the field of CEM as applied to the interaction of electromagnetic fields with structures of wide ranging electrical size. He implies that compared to computation fluid dynamics and structural analysis, CEM is relatively immature, the high frequency application only emerging in production form in the 90s.

Before 1910, the study of liquid crystals was dominated by Lehmann and the German school of chemists. The point of gravity then moved to France with Friedel as a leading figure. While there are many studies about Lehmann, there are fewer about Friedel. He has written about himself, so to speak, and more people have cited him than read his original papers. In the first part of this historical review, I will, after a close reading of the original papers, trace the development on French soil between 1910 and 1922. After 1922, the progress stopped in France, but a renewal of interest in liquid crystals came from Germany in the late 1920s and the first international symposium was organised there in 1931, closely followed by one in England 1933. After the Second World War, a new symposium in 1958 revived the field and then came a new outburst of turbulent productivity in the late 1960s. My aim is to focus on some of the most prominent persons and some turning points also in this modern era. But my foremost aim is to illustrate that nothing happened in the straightforward way in which most texts tend to outline the history. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

In this paper I discuss the ways in which the conference stream ethics and values manifested at the 2015 RCGP Annual Conference in Glasgow, and the ways in which it is planned for the 2016 RCGP Annual Conference in Harrogate. The 2015 RCGP had plenaries, oral presentations, breakout symposia, a debate, and a poster stream. I briefly discuss each in turn before offering a manifesto (a public statement of aims and proposed policy) for ethics and values at healthcare conferences. It is my hope that others will critique this, flesh it out further and even consider how ethics and values relate to conferences for healthcare workers of various specialities. A conference provides opportunities for ethics and values discussion that are potentially distinctive from any other kind of forum. Because conferences offer the potential for knowledge and attitudes to be revisited and revised, issues can be ‘unsettled’ in a way that permits different perspectives to be more fully discussed. The 7th UK Young Coastal Scientists and Engineers Conference welcomed 60 scientists and engineers to come together and discuss coastal research. The conference was hosted by the National Oceanography Centre in Liverpool, 30-31 March 2011. Early career practitioners and researchers presented 42 short papers on a range of topics driven by current issues addressed by UK universities, government agencies and consultancies. Although all presentations had a coastal theme, content varied from small-scale processes to regional-scale monitoring and management, covering topics such as structure impact, sediment transport, morphology, waves, currents, ecology, oxygen, estuarine systems, stratification, modelling, observation, ice, renewables and extreme events. This paper presents the keynote lecture and six abstracts considered to be of particular merit by the panel of judges. The papers collected here are based on those presented at a colloquium entitled interac- tion in Complementary School Contexts: Developing Identities of Choice at the Sociolinguistics Symposium 15 in Newcastle, April 2004. The colloquium was convened by the editors of this volume and Arvind Bhatt. The genesis for bringing together papers on complementary schools, a much under-researched area, was a project sponsored by the ESRC on Complementari1j Schools and their Commuiiities in Leicester (Bhatt et al., 2004; Martinet al., 2004a, b).
