This article presents abstracts of papers submitted at the 21st Annual Meeting of the Society of Cutaneous Research held in Leiden, the Netherlands on April 21-23, 1994. Langerhans cells are bone marrow-derived dendritic cells and recent reports indicate that human bone marrow stem cells may respond to growth factors and cytokines to differentiate into this distinctive cell. Researchers have contrasted the situation with bone marrow cells in man to that seen in CD-I mice. Langerhans cells originate from a proliferating pool of bone marrow precursors, their site of maturation and the conditions that direct their growth and differentiation are poorly characterized. Researchers followed the evolution of different states of differentiation of CD 1a-positive cells originated from human cord blood CD34+ hematopoietic progenitor cells.
