This paper presents the concept of an innovative control of a central heating system in a multifamily building based on the original thermodynamic model, the resulting architecture of the control system, and the originally designed and manufactured wireless temperature sensors for thermal zones. The novelty of this solution is the developed layers of the control system: distributed measurement and correction analysis, which is based on the existing infrastructure and the local HVAC controller. This approach allows for the effective use of the measured temperature data from thermal zones and finally sending the value of the calculated correction of settings to the controller. Moreover, in the analytical layer, a model was also implemented that calculates the necessary amount of energy based on data from the subsystem of temperature sensors located in the thermal zones of the building. The use of the algorithmic strategy presented in this paper extends the functionality and significantly improves the energy efficiency of the existing, classic, reference heating control algorithm by implementing additional control loops. Additionally, it enables integration with demand-side response systems. The presented concept was successfully tested, achieving real energy savings for heating by 12%. These results are described in a case-study format. The authors believe that this concept can be used in other buildings and thus will have a positive impact on the energy savings used to maintain thermal comfort in buildings and significantly reduce CO2 emissions. A model of the influence of the climatic conditions of Slovakia on the consumption of firewood and the production of emissions in creating thermal comfort in a heated building is presented in the paper. The temperature of atmospheric air ranges from -11°C to -18°C in winter and the number of days of the heating period in the range between 202-253 in individual localities of Slovakia is reflected in the size of heat losses of the heated building, fuel consumption, and emissions production. The presented model allows for balancing the consumption of firewood and emission production for individual localities in Slovakia, following the locality's climatic conditions, the heated object's size, the boiler's thermal efficiency, and the type of firewood. For areas with hot summer and cold winter, air conditioning is an essential tool to improve the living environment, but the traditional air conditioning needs to consume a lot of energy in cooling and heating, the fan operation noise is large and the sense of blowing will be uncomfortable. This paper briefly introduced the basic structure of a ground-source heat pump-floor radiant air conditioning system and the control strategy which was used for regulating the operation of the air conditioning system. Then, in order to ensure the appropriate comfort and reduce energy consumption, the control strategy was optimized. An experimental room in Xining, Qinghai province, was taken as an example for analysis. The results showed that the thermal comfort under the control strategy proposed in this study was more stable at the moderate degree and the temperature was slightly higher under the traditional control strategy, although the indoor temperature fluctuation under the optimal control strategy was large and the temperature was slightly lower than that under the traditional control strategy; under the control strategy proposed in this study, the air conditioning system had shorter operation time and less power consumption. In times of great transition of the European construction sector to energy efficient and nearly zero energy buildings (nZEB), a market observation containing qualitative and quantitative indications should help to fill out some of the current gaps concerning the EU 2020 carbon targets. Next to the economic challenges, there are equally important factors that hinder renovating the existing residential building stock and adding newly constructed high performance buildings. Under these circumstances this paper summarises the findings of a cross-comparative study of the societal and technical barriers of nZEB implementation in 7 Southern European countries. The study analyses the present situation and provides an overview on future prospects for nZEB in Southern Europe. The result presents an overview of challenges and provides recommendations based on available empirical evidence to further lower those barriers in the European construction sector. The paper finds that the most Southern European countries are poorly prepared for nZEB implementation and especially to the challenge/opportunity of retrofitting existing buildings. Creating a common approach to further develop nZEB targets, concepts and definitions in synergy with the climatic, societal and technical state of progress in Southern Europe is essential. The building sector accounts for significant portion of total final energy use in most countries. One way to reduce significantly building energy consumption is to adopt energy efficiency technologies and strategies. Due to environmental concerns and high cost of energy in recent years there has been a renewed interest in building energy efficiency. Passive House (PH) standard provides a cost-efficient way of minimizing energy demand of buildings in accordance with global principle of sustainability. However, it is ongoing challenge to improve building energy efficiency without compromising indoor environmental quality. The objective of this paper is to review the interactions between energy performance and indoor environment quality in buildings with PH standard, considering parametric sensitivity study including effects of diverse parameters on PH building performance. Passive House technologies including heat and cooling recovery ventilation, pre heating/cooling fresh air, pre-ventilation and passive cooling are presented considering different weather conditions. Thermal comfort represented by recommended thermal range and comfort zone and indoor air quality indicated by CO2 concentration have been numerically and experimentally analysed. In electric buses, the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system is responsible for up to 50% of the energy consumption, thereby significantly affecting the efficiency. It is therefore necessary to identify improved thermal settings for the bus cabin to minimize the energy consumption, while guaranteeing good thermal comfort. To achieve this goal, this paper presents the results of climatic measurements in an electric bus in Berlin, Germany. These measurements were performed for outer temperatures between 5.3 °C and 7.8 °C and four cabin temperature settings. During the measurements, several climatic parameters and the energy consumption were measured, whereas the thermal comfort (TC) was evaluated via 71 passengers' surveys. The results show that the climatic conditions in the bus vary greatly depending on the position (up to 3 K difference in mean air temperature) and height (up to 8 K/m temperature-to-height ratio). Additionally, the surveys show that the mean value of the thermal comfort parameter TC is minimized to a value of 0.15 (corresponding to "comfortable" thermal perception) for a set temperature of 21 °C, whereas the thermal conditions are perceived as acceptable even with heating off. Current indoor thermal environment is usually automatically controlled based on a temperature set-point given by room occupants or building managers. However, investigation shows that many temperature set-points are far from the comfortable temperature range recommended by design handbooks. Such unreasonable temperature set-points will result in not only uncomfortable indoor thermal environment, but also waste of cooling or heating energy. The authors have proposed a methodology of satisfaction based control to take place of the traditional set-point based control. This paper describes the experimental comparison results between satisfaction based indoor thermal environment control and set-point based control. Two test-beds were set up and a series of experiments was conducted to compare control performances, user acceptances, user work performances and system energy consumptions of the set-point based and satisfaction based control. The comparison results show that the satisfaction based control can achieve more stable thermal environment. Both of the two control methods can get relatively high scores regarding user acceptance and work performance. There are no statistically significant differences for user acceptance and work performance between two control methods. However, satisfaction based control consumed 15.3% and 11.9% less energy at two test-beds respectively than set-point based control due to more reasonable temperature settings given by the satisfaction based control. This paper presents a district energy management strategy devoted to monitor and control the district power consumption in a twofold human-centered perspective: the respect of user’s comfort preferences and the minimization of the power consumption and costs. The presented district energy management system forwards the power profile determined the day ahead to each building energy management system that, in turn, minimizes its real-time power consumption and costs (based on rewards and penalties), respecting the comfort preferences. Successively, the power is redistributed among the district buildings in order to minimize the penalties by applying two approaches: a centralized approach for public buildings and a distributed methodology for private buildings. Such optimization problems are formalized by defining some linear programming problems: two case studies are solved to show the applicability of the proposed management strategies. Existing theories have little to say about thermal comfort in the home. Most previous studies have focused on non-domestic buildings in which the occupants have limited opportunities to change the ambient environmental conditions. At home, people generally have greater freedom and, subject to the capabilities of the building and its systems, can decide and create conditions they consider comfortable. This paper reports on a detailed study of thermal comfort practices and energy consumption in different dwellings in South Wales using mixed methods to record physical conditions and householders' accounts of how and why they create those conditions. The methodology includes a robust form of thermal comfort survey that has enabled us to link reported comfort votes to measurements of prevailing environmental conditions. Householders also participated in in-depth interviews to describe how they maintain comfort in their everyday lives. This study reveals diverse time-varying profiles of thermal conditions, in which there are significant differences in temperatures in the main living spaces and in the temperature distribution, for example, between living rooms and bedrooms. It shows how householders develop a range of behaviours, skills and knowledge to create thermal conditions they consider acceptable rather than those predicted by conventional comfort theories. Abstract: The use of external fixed shading devices to adjust solar influx radiation and to save energy is well known. However, fixed shading devices can reduce daylight availability, increase artificial light needs and block the beneficial winter solar radiation. This paper is part of a research on the characteristics of the optimum shading device. The aim is to investigate the balance between the energy needs for heating and cooling the space that the shading device is used for and the energy that is used for lighting the same space and the energy that the shading device can produce. In order to investigate the balance between the above mentioned parameters, thirteen types of fixed shading devices have been studied and categorized according to their energy performance, for a single occupant office room. The same office room is tested for two different Mediterranean latitudes in Athens and in Chania, Crete in Greece and for two different south facing windows’ sizes. The thermal behavior of the devices is assessed through computer simulation application and the daylight analysis is assessed with both computer simulation and physical modeling. Stable parameters were the internal loads in the office room, the south orientation of the façade and the type of glazing. Variable parameter was the type of the fixed shading device. The study shows that all shading devices with integrated south facing PV can efficiently produce electricity which may be used for lighting. The study highlights the fact that shading devices such as Surrounding shading, Brise–Soleil full façade and Canopy inclined double work efficiently against thermal and cooling loads and may be used to produce sufficient electricity and control daylight. The study defines the geometrical parameters that will be incorporated to the overall characteristics of the optimum fixed shading device and proposes new fields of development for the BIPV technologies. Abstract: A data-driven approach for the optimization of a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system in an office building is presented. A neural network (NN) algorithm is used to build a predictive model since it outperformed five other algorithms investigated in this paper. The NN-derived predictive model is then optimized with a strength multi-objective particle-swarm optimization (S-MOPSO) algorithm. The relationship between energy consumption and thermal comfort measured with temperature and humidity is discussed. The control settings derived from optimization of the model minimize energy consumption while maintaining thermal comfort at an acceptable level. The solutions derived by the S-MOPSO algorithm point to a large number of control alternatives for an HVAC system, representing a range of trade-offs between thermal comfort and energy consumption. Abstract: Based on the need to reduce CO2 emissions and minimize energy dependency, the EU Member States have set ambitious energy policies goals and have developed respective, specific regulations, in order to improve the energy performance of the building sector. Thus, specific measures regarding the buildings’ envelope, the use of efficient HVAC technologies and the integration of renewable energy systems are being constantly studied and promoted. The effective combination of these three main aspects will consequently result in maximum energy efficiency. Germany has played a key role in this development, with intensive work focusing in the improvement of the energy behaviour of the residential building stock. In this paper, the use of radiative heating systems placing special emphasis on infrared is being studied as part of the energy renovation of residential buildings from the 1970’s. This is done by applying an integrated assessment model to evaluate specific interventions regarding the improvement of the energy behaviour of the buildings’ envelope and the use of radiative heating systems, based on a thorough Life Cycle Analysis according to criteria of energy, economic and environmental performance, as well as thermal comfort. Abstract: A traditional Chinese heating system, the Chinese Kang, is used by 175 million people in detached houses in the rural regions of China, especially in Northeast China. This system utilizes biomass such as corn stalks, straw, corncob and energy plants as the heat sources. The objective of this paper is to establish a set of models to simulate the energy performance of the Kang heating system in one Chinese detached house. An experimental field study was carried out to collect practical parameters in a newly constructed Chinese detached house. The dynamic performance of the Kang heating system was simulated by using IDA-ICE 4.0 embedded with an empirical model built in the field study. The results show that the simulation can obtain good overall agreement with the field measurement results. It was confirmed that the Kang model created by IDA-ICE 4.0 is capable of simulating the performance of the Kang system and of calculating energy consumption in the detached house. Moreover, the result reveals that the thermal environment in the present Chinese detached house is still poor during the severe cold season if only the Kang system is used to heat the whole house. Abstract: This paper discusses the strategy of improving the efficiency of air-source heat pumps by adding a small amount of heat to the sensor of the thermostatic expansion valve (TXV). TXV heating retards the closing of the valve and boosts energy efficiency in heating mode. Test results demonstrate that appropriate TXV heating achieves an improvement in coefficient of performance (COP) and thermal comfort. The required heating power is no more than 40W and the additional equipment cost is less than $20 at manufacturer cost (2006). Abstract: This paper presents a detailed meta-analysis of end and primary energy use for heating, cooling and ventilation of 11 low-energy non-residential buildings and one residential building in Germany that belong to the EnOB research program launched by the German Federal Ministry for Economy. In particular, the analysis emphasizes the substantial impact of auxiliary energy use on the efficiency of heating and cooling performance. The investigated buildings employ environmental energy sources and sinks – such as the ground, ground water, rainwater and the ambient air – in combination with thermo-active building systems. These concepts are promising approaches for slashing the primary energy use of buildings without violating occupant thermal comfort. A limited primary energy use of about 100kWhprim/(m2 neta) as a target for the complete building service technology (HVAC and lighting) was postulated for all buildings presented. With respect to this premise, a comprehensive long-term monitoring in high time resolution was carried out over the course of two to five years, with an accompanying commissioning of the building performance. Measurements include the energy use for heating, cooling, and ventilation, as well as the auxiliary equipment, the performance of the environmental heat source and sink, and local climatic site conditions. Abstract: The Chinese kang is an ancient integrated home system for cooking, sleeping, domestic heating and ventilation. It is still widely used today in nearly 85% of rural homes in northern China. In 2004, there were 67 million kangs used by 175 million people. Existing kang designs are mostly based on the intuition and accumulation of craftsman experience. There is a trend that Chinese kang is gradually replaced by bed and coal-burning radiators, domestic heating stoves, etc. using commercial energy. As rural building heating constitutes 25% of total building energy consumption in China, we consider that the transition and new technologies for rural home heating in northern China is crucial for managing future building energy consumption in China. This paper reviews the basic heat transfer and airflow principles of Chinese kang, as well as describing the traditional grounded kang and the relatively new elevated kang. The thermal performance of the kang is shown by data from literature and field surveys. The future of Chinese kang and research needs is also briefly discussed. Abstract: This paper reports on an analytical investigation into the energy saving potential associated with modified comfort limits in transitional spaces in buildings. Such spaces may not require the same high level and close environmental control of more fully occupied spaces and thus a wider variation in conditions and interpretation of thermal comfort may be permitted. Estimations are made of energy saving potential based upon typical floor area proportions utilised for transition spaces of various types in office/commercial buildings. The data are combined with suggested norms for comfort expectation that have wider temperature limits than for normally occupied office zones. The method has been applied to a series of building types situated in the climate of the East Pennines area of the UK using a thermal analysis tool. The results show that useful energy savings (particularly for heating) are possible by allowing for a modest (and realistic) relaxation of prescribed comfort standards in transition spaces. The optimal control of the HVAC system in the nearly zero energy buildings (nZEBs) can be considered as a challenge. Indeed, the lack of data given by monitored data does not allow understanding what are the implications of different strategies on thermal comfort and energy consumptions. This paper determines an approach for the evaluation of the management of the heating system in an existing educational nZEB. The aim is to understand how the energy efficiency of the heating system is sensitive to controls strategies and the important role played by the control systems. The test lecture rooms on KU Leuven Ghent Technology Campus (Belgium) have been chosen as case study. A deep analysis, starting from an in-field monitoring, was carried out during the winter period of 2019, in order to assess the actual operation and the energy use of building systems under real conditions. Then, a building energy simulation (BES) model of the building and its systems was developed and calibrated against the real monitoring data. Control strategies of the heating system are simulated and compared to the current configuration. The simulation results show that strategies based on a definition of a heating curve for the boiler can reduce the comfortable time (−23%). Controlling the temperature inside the storage tank as a function of the outdoor temperature together with the control on the activation of the air handling unit result in an energy savings from 32% to 46%, with a correspondent increase of comfort time in the period from 0.6% to 3.4% compared to the baseline scenario, depending to the relationship between the external temperature and water temperature inside the water storage tank. This paper presents the investigation of a local heating system consisting of three heating mats incorporated within a sedentary workplace. Thermal comfort and individual power settings for the heating mats were studied in experiments with 41 human subjects. Experiments were performed in a climate chamber at two operative temperatures: 16 and 18 °C. Results showed that local heating systems improved occupants' comfort and were able to create acceptable thermal conditions under both temperatures. The power settings identified were used to study the applicability of heating mats in an industrial hall. Multi-variant analysis of energy consumption for heating was carried out using an ESP-r (Environmental Systems Performance–Research) simulation program. The analysis results demonstrate that in some cases, the installation of local heating mats in industrial halls may reduce energy usage compared to having to heat the entire hall. However, the benefits depend on numerous parameters. Local heating is most advantageous when installed in halls with a small number of workstations, small internal heat gains, and low-efficiency central heating systems. In reality for the satisfactory implementation of local heating systems for a particular application, it is advised to perform analysis for the specific local conditions.
