The VST Optical Imaging of the CDFS and ES1 Fields (VOICE) Survey is a Guaranteed Time programme carried out with the European Southern Observatory (ESO) VLT Survey Telescope (VST) telescope to provide deep optical imaging over two 4 deg2 patches of the sky centred on the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) and ES1 as part of the ESO-Spitzer Imaging Extragalactic Survey. We present the cosmic shear measurement over the 4 deg2 covering the CDFS region in the r band using LensFit. Each of the four tiles of 1 deg2 has more than 100 exposures, of which more than 50 exposures passed a series of image quality selection criteria for weak-lensing study. The 5σ limiting magnitude in r band is 26.1 for point sources, which is ≳1 mag deeper than other weak-lensing survey in the literature [e.g. the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS) at VST]. The photometric redshifts are estimated using the VOICE u, g, r, i together with near-infrared VIDEO data Y, J, H, Ks. The mean redshift of the shear catalogue is 0.87, considering the shear weight. The effective galaxy number density is 16.35 gal arcmin−2, which is nearly twice the one of KiDS. The performance of LensFit on such a deep data set was calibrated using VOICE-like mock image simulations. Furthermore, we have analysed the reliability of the shear catalogue by calculating the star–galaxy cross-correlations, the tomographic shear correlations of two redshift bins and the contaminations of the blended galaxies. As a further sanity check, we have constrained cosmological parameters by exploring the parameter space with Population Monte Carlo sampling. We present cosmological constraints from 2D weak gravitational lensing by the large-scale structure in the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS) which spans 154 deg2 in five optical bands. Using accurate photometric redshifts and measured shapes for 4.2 million galaxies between redshifts of 0.2 and 1.3, we compute the 2D cosmic shear correlation function over angular scales ranging between 0.8 and 350 arcmin. Using non-linear models of the dark-matter power spectrum, we constrain cosmological parameters by exploring the parameter space with Population Monte Carlo sampling. The best constraints from lensing alone are obtained for the small-scale density-fluctuations amplitude σ8 scaled with the total matter density Ωm. For a flat Λcold dark matter (ΛCDM) model we obtain σ8(Ωm/0.27)0.6 = 0.79 ± 0.03.We combine the CFHTLenS data with 7-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP7), baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO): SDSS-III (BOSS) and a Hubble Space Telescopedistance-ladder prior on the Hubble constant to get joint constraints. For a flat ΛCDM model, we find Ωm = 0.283 ± 0.010 and σ8 = 0.813 ± 0.014. In the case of a curved wCDM universe, we obtain Ωm = 0.27 ± 0.03, σ8 = 0.83 ± 0.04, w0 = −1.10 ± 0.15 and ΩK = 0.006+ 0.006− 0.004.We calculate the Bayesian evidence to compare flat and curved ΛCDM and dark-energy CDM models. From the combination of all four probes, we find models with curvature to be at moderately disfavoured with respect to the flat case. A simple dark-energy model is indistinguishable from ΛCDM. The accuracy of galaxy photometric redshift (photo- z) can significantly affect the analysis of weak gravitational lensing measurements, especially for future high-precision surveys. In this work, we try to extract photo- z information from both galaxy flux and image data expected to be obtained by China Space Station Telescope (CSST) using neural networks. We generate mock galaxy images based on the observational images from the Advanced Camera for Surveys of Hubble Space Telescope (HST -ACS) and COSMOS catalogues, considering the CSST instrumental effects. Galaxy flux data are then measured directly from these images by aperture photometry. The multilayer perceptron (MLP) and convolutional neural network (CNN) are constructed to predict photo- z from fluxes and images, respectively. We also propose to use an efficient hybrid network, which combines the MLP and CNN, by employing the transfer learning techniques to investigate the improvement of the result with both flux and image data included. We find that the photo- z accuracy and outlier fraction can achieve σNMAD = 0.023 and |$\eta = 1.43{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| for the MLP using flux data only, and σNMAD = 0.025 and |$\eta = 1.21{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| for the CNN using image data only. The result can be further improved in high efficiency as σNMAD = 0.020 and |$\eta = 0.90{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| for the hybrid transfer network. These approaches result in similar galaxy median and mean redshifts 0.8 and 0.9, respectively, for the redshift range from 0 to 4. We present a sample of 16 likely strong gravitational lenses identified in the VST Optical Imaging of the CDFS and ES1 fields (VOICE survey) using convolutional neural networks (CNNs). We train two different CNNs on composite images produced by superimposing simulated gravitational arcs on real Luminous Red Galaxies observed in VOICE. Specifically, the first CNN is trained on single-band images and more easily identifies systems with large Einstein radii, while the second one, trained on composite RGB images, is more accurate in retrieving systems with smaller Einstein radii. We apply both networks to real data from the VOICE survey, taking advantage of the high limiting magnitude (26.1 in the r band) and low PSF FWHM (0.8 arcsec in the r band) of this deep survey. We analyse ∼21 200 images with magr < 21.5, identifying 257 lens candidates. To retrieve a high-confidence sample and to assess the accuracy of our technique, nine of the authors perform a visual inspection. Roughly 75 per cent of the systems are classified as likely lenses by at least one of the authors. Finally, we assemble the LIVE sample (Lenses In VoicE) composed by the 16 systems passing the chosen grading threshold. Three of these candidates show likely lensing features when observed by the Hubble Space Telescope. This work represents a further confirmation of the ability of CNNs to inspect large samples of galaxies searching for gravitational lenses. We present the cluster mass-richness scaling relation calibrated by a weak lensing analysis of ≿ 18 000 galaxy cluster candidates in the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS). Detected using the 3D-Matched-Filter (MF) cluster-finder of Milkeraitis et al., these cluster candidates span a wide range of masses, from the small group scale up to ~1015M⊙, andredshifts 0.2 ≲ z ≲ <0.9. The total significance of the stacked shear measurement amounts to 54σ. We compare cluster masses determined using weak lensing shear and magnification, finding the measurements in individual richness bins to yield 1σ compatibility, but with magnification estimates biased low. This first direct mass comparison yields important insights for improving the systematics handling of future lensing magnification work. In addition, we confirm analyses that suggest cluster miscentring has an important effect on the observed 3D-MF halo profiles, and we quantify this by fitting for projected cluster centroid offsets, which are typically ~0.4 arcmin. We bin the cluster candidates as a function of redshift, finding similar cluster masses and richness across the full range up to z ~ 0.9. We measure the 3D-MF mass-richness scaling relation M200 = M0 (N200/20)β. We find a normalization M0 ~ (2.7-0.4+0.5) x 1013M⊙, and a logarithmic slope of β ~ 1.4 ± 0.1, both of which are in 1σ agreement with results from the magnification analysis. We use weak gravitational lensing to analyse the dark matter haloes around satellite galaxies in galaxy groups in the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS) data set. This data set is derived from the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey Wide survey, and encompasses 154 deg2 of high-quality shape data. Using the photometric redshifts, we divide the sample of lens galaxies with stellar masses in the range 109–1010.5 M⊙ into those likely to lie in high-density environments (HDE) and those likely to lie in low-density environments (LDE). Through comparison with galaxy catalogues extracted from the Millennium Simulation, we show that the sample of HDE galaxies should primarily (∼61 per cent) consist of satellite galaxies in groups, while the sample of LDE galaxies should consist of mostly (∼87 per cent) non-satellite (field and central) galaxies. Comparing the lensing signals around samples of HDE and LDE galaxies matched in stellar mass, the lensing signal around HDE galaxies clearly shows a positive contribution from their host groups on their lensing signals at radii of ∼500–1000 kpc, the typical separation between satellites and group centres. More importantly, the subhaloes of HDE galaxies are less massive than those around LDE galaxies by a factor of 0.65 ± 0.12, significant at the 2.9σ level. A natural explanation is that the haloes of satellite galaxies are stripped through tidal effects in the group environment. Dark energy may be the first sign of new fundamental physics in the Universe, taking either a physical form or revealing a correction to Einsteinian gravity. Weak gravitational lensing and galaxy peculiar velocities provide complementary probes of general relativity, and in combination allow us to test modified theories of gravity in a unique way. We perform such an analysis by combining measurements of cosmic shear tomography from the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS) with the growth of structure from the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey and the Six-degree-Field Galaxy Survey, producing the strongest existing joint constraints on the metric potentials that describe general theories of gravity. For scale-independent modifications to the metric potentials which evolve linearly with the effective dark energy density, we find present-day cosmological deviations in the Newtonian potential and curvature potential from the prediction of general relativity to be ΔΨ/Ψ = 0.05 ± 0.25 and ΔΦ/Φ = −0.05 ± 0.3, respectively (68 per cent confidence limits). ABSTRACT We present the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS) that accurately determines a weak gravitational lensing signal from the full 154 deg2 of deep multicolour data obtained by the CFHT Legacy Survey. Weak gravitational lensing by large-scale structure is widely recognized as one of the most powerful but technically challenging probes of cosmology. We outline the CFHTLenS analysis pipeline, describing how and why every step of the chain from the raw pixel data to the lensing shear and photometric redshift measurement has been revised and improved compared to previous analyses of a subset of the same data. We present a novel method to identify data which contributes a non-negligible contamination to our sample and quantify the required level of calibration for the survey. Through a series of cosmology-insensitive tests we demonstrate the robustness of the resulting cosmic shear signal, presenting a science-ready shear and photometric redshift catalogue for future exploitation.
