While nanoporous graphene oxide (GO) is recognized as one of the most promising reverse osmosis desalination membranes, limited attention has been paid to controlling desalination performance through the large GO pores, primarily due to significant ion leakage resulting in the suboptimal performance of these pores. In this study, we employed a molecular dynamics simulation approach to demonstrate that Mg2+ ions, adhered to carboxylated GO nanopores, can function as gates, regulating the transport of ions (Na+ and Cl−) through the porous GO membrane. Specifically, the presence of divalent cations near a nanopore reduces the concentration of salt ions in the vicinity of the pore and prolongs their permeation time across the pore. This subsequently leads to a notable enhancement in salt rejection rates. Additionally, the ion rejection rate increases with more adsorbed Mg2+ ions. However, the presence of the adsorbed Mg2+ ions compromises water transport. Here, we also elucidate the impact of graphene oxidation degree on desalination. Furthermore, we design an optimal combination of adsorbed Mg2+ ion quantity and oxidation degree to achieve high water flux and salt rejection rates. G-quadruplexes (GQs) are guanine-rich, non-canonical nucleic acid structures that play fundamental roles in biological processes. The topology of GQs is associated with the sequences and lengths of DNA, the types of linking loops, and the associated metal cations. However, our understanding on the basic physical properties of the formation process and the stability of GQs is rather limited. In this work, we employed ab initio, molecular dynamics (MD), and steered MD (SMD) simulations to study the interaction between loop bases and ions, and the effect on the stability of G-quadruplex DNA, the Drude oscillator model was used in MD and SMD simulations as a computationally efficient manner method for modeling electronic polarization in DNA ion solutions. We observed that the binding energy between DNA bases and ions (K+/Na+) is about the base stacking free energies indicates that there will be a competition among the binding of M+-base, H-bonds between bases, and the base-stacking while ions were bound in loop of GQs. Our SMD simulations indicated that the side loop inclined to form the base stacking while the loop sequence was Thy or Ade, and the cross-link loop upon the G-tetrads was not easy to form the base stacking. The base stacking side loop complex K+ was found to have a good stabilization synergy. Although a stronger interaction was observed to exist between Cyt and K+, such an interaction was unable to promote the stability of the loop with the sequence Cyt. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• The anion plays a crucial function in controlling the GO interlayer spacing. • The ion bridge is chiefly responsible for the reducing of the GO interlayer spacing. • The ion bridge is composed of one anion sandwiched by two cations. • The effect of the number of ion bridges on the GO interlayer spacing is investigated. Interlayer spacing of graphene oxide (GO) membranes can be precisely controlled using cations, which has been extensively used in nanofiltration membrane. However, no report definitely discloses the specific performance of anion in treating GO membrane, although cations and anions naturally coexist in aqueous solution. Subjectively, anion might have weak/reverse effect in maintaining the interlayer of negatively charged GO, which is yet confirmed by no evidence. In this work, combining molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations, we have discovered a long-time unexplored effect that anion can also sustain the GO membrane interlayer — specifically, two types of ion bridges (confined within two neighboring GO sheets), one composed of one anion intercalated into two cations and the other composed of two anions sandwiched by two cations, can effectively and stably fix the interlayer spacing of GO membrane. Our calculations revealed that the ion bridges greatly enhance the interaction between two neighboring GO sheets, making them highly stabilize in aqueous solution. Moreover, free energy calculations and density functional theory calculations further confirm the critical role of ion bridge in controlling the interlayer spacing of GO membrane. Our findings highlight, for the first time, the undiscovered control of GO membrane interlayer with anions via forming an ingenious ion bridge, rather than the preconceived weak/reverse effect of anions, which could inspire the future application of anions (and ion bridge) in membrane design.
