The accretion and recycling of Archean-Paleoproterozoic continental crust is the key to understanding the formation and evolution of early continental crust. Early Precambrian metamorphic basement is well developed in the Aktashtagh area, southeastern margin of the Tarim Craton, northwestern China. We report zircon SHRIMP U Pb dating, LA-MC-ICP-MS Lu Hf isotopic analysis and whole-rock geochemical analysis on 16 samples (mainly TTG, tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite) from Aktashtagh. Multiple episodes of early Precambrain magmatism, including 3.72 Ga, 3.63 Ga, 3.10 Ga, 2.83–2.69 Ga, 2.55–2.50 Ga, 2.05–2.02 Ga and 1.93–1.82 Ga events, have been identified in the Aktashtagh region. The most intense magmatism occurred in the late Mesoarchean to early Neoarchean. Significantly, 3.63 Ga and 3.10 Ga TTG rocks are identified, together with more extensive 2.8–2.7 Ga and ∼ 2.5 Ga TTG rocks. The TTG suites are dominated by tonalitic, with some trondhjemitic and grandioritic rocks. They show large variations in REE contents, are mainly distributed in the high- and medium-pressure fields in the Sr/Y-Y and La/Yb-Yb diagrams, and the 2.7 Ga TTG rocks commonly show higher and more variable Sr/Y and La/Yb ratios. The 3.63–3.10 Ga TTG rocks have magmatic zircon ε Hf (t) values of −3.9 to +3.1 and t DM1 (Hf) model ages of 3.9–3.6 Ga, whereas the ∼2.7–2.51 Ga TTG rocks have magmatic zircon ε Hf (t) values of −13.4 to +2.1 and t DM1 (Hf) model ages of 3.3–3.0 Ga. The ∼2.7 to ∼2.0 Ga meta-gabbroic-dioritic rocks have magmatic zircon ε Hf (t) values of −19.7 to +0.6 and t DM1 (Hf) model ages of 3.2–2.4 Ga. Metamorphic zircon ages of 3.56 Ga, 2.75–2.73 Ga, 2.53–2.51 Ga, 2.03–1.96 Ga and ∼ 1.85 Ga are also recorded, whereas ∼2.83 Ga, 2.53–2.40 Ga, 2.05–2.02 Ga and 1.86–1.83 Ga crustally-derived K-rich granites are identified, with the most important occurring in the late Neoarchean and late Paleoproterozoic. In this regard, the Tarim Craton is similar to the North China Craton in its early Precambrian geological evolution. The main difference is that the Paleoproterozoic tectonothermal event in the Tarim Craton started as early as 2.00 Ga, whereas in the North China Craton it occurred between 1.95 and 1.80 Ga. • Aktashtagh of the southeastern Tarim Craton has multiple episodes of magmatism from 3.72 to 1.82 Ga. • TTG show large Sr/Y-Y and La/Yb-Yb variations and magmatic zircons have ε Hf (t) of −15.2 to +3.1. • There were multiple Paleoarchaean to Paleoproterozoic events leading to crustal recycling. • The early Precambrian geological records are similar to those in the North China Craton. • The Tarim and North China cratons may be different portions of a larger craton. Early Paleoproterozoic supracrustal rocks are relatively rare worldwide and only a few have been reported in the North China Craton (NCC). Daqingshan is a typical area of the Khondalite Belt, northwestern NCC, where early Precambrian supracrustal and intrusive rocks are widely distributed, although the precise age of all units remains unconfirmed. The Lower Wulashan Group is mainly composed of acidic to mafic volcanic and volcano-sedimentary rocks that have undergone amphibolite to granulite facies metamorphism; it was previously considered to be of Mesoarchean age. This study utilized integrated field and petrographic work, whole-rock geochemistry, and Nd whole-rock and zircon U-Pb-Hf isotopic analyses on the Lower Wulashan Group and related intrusive rocks. SHRIMP U-Pb dating of eight samples from the supracrustal rocks, interpreted as metavolcanics, yielded magmatic zircon ages of 2455–2382 Ma, thus for the first time identifying early Paleoproterozoic supracrustal rocks in the Daqingshan area. Thus it is of great importance for understanding the Precambrian evolution of the NCC as well as the Earth because this is within the period when magmatism was globally weak. Six samples from a variety of intrusive rocks have zircon U-Pb ages of 2436–2362 Ma, thus further confirming the depositional ages of the supracrustal rocks. These rocks include meta-alkali basalt, and are high in total rare earth element contents and have magmatic zircon ε Hf (t) values of −3.00 to +6.62 and crustal model ages of 3.12–2.52 Ga (38 analyses), and whole-rock ε Nd (t) of +1.0 to +2.6 with crustal model ages of 2.74–2.60 Ga (5 analyses). It is considered that the early Paleoproterozoic supracrustal rocks of the Lower Wulashan Group and related intrusive rocks formed in a continental environment, but more work is required to determine the tectonic regime (extension or subduction). Western Shandong Province is a typical area of the North China Craton (NCC) where Neoarchean plutonic and supracrustal rocks are widely distributed. Early studies documented that ∼2.7 Ga and ∼2.5 Ga magmato-tectono-thermal events are well developed in the area. Here we report SHRIMP U–Pb ages and Hf-in-zircon isotopic data from ten samples of different magmatic rock types including hornblendite, gneissic tonalite, gneissic trondhjemite and gneissic granite. Magmatic zircon grains have 207 Pb/ 206 Pb ages ranging from 2667 to 2598 Ma. Some rocks contain ∼2.5 Ga metamorphic rims and ∼2.7 Ga zircon cores. The magmatic zircon grains have ɛ Hf ( t ) values and Hf crustal model ages of −1.1 to +11.3 and 3.02–2.4 Ga, respectively. Combined with an earlier study, our main conclusions are that the middle Neoarchean rocks mainly occur together with early Neoarchean rocks in the northeastern portion of the central belt. Juvenile additions to continental crust and crustal recycling played important roles in the middle Neoarchean of western Shandong Province, and the entire Neoarchean tectonic evolution can be divided into middle to early Neoarchean (2.75–2.6 Ga) and late Neoarchean (2.6–2.5 Ga) events. The Daqingshan area in the North China Craton (NCC) incorporates several suites of magmatic intrusives including gabbros, granodiorites, charnockites and syenogranites, which were overprinted by subsequent metamorphic events. In this study, we report detailed morphological and textural characteristics as well as sensitive high resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) U-Pb ages of zircons from ten representative samples of the magmatic suites including syenogranites, charnockites and granodiorites. The zircons in these rocks are characterized by typical magmatic crystallization features including elongate prismatic grains with angular to sub-angular faces which are overprinted by a variety of reworked textures indicating strong recrystallization. These structures are terminated by thin and variable metamorphic overgrowths. U-Pb analyses of the zircons reveal multiple tectono-thermal events including magmatic crystallization at 2.30-2.00, 1.96-1.94 and 1.85-1.82 Ga and metamorphic overprint at 1.97-1.94 and 1.87-1.82 Ga. The episodic magmatism and regional metamorphism recorded in our study show a complex sequence of tectonic processes during the early to late Palaeoproterozoic associated with the amalgamation of crustal blocks within the NCC, with the youngest episode of the syenogranites representing regional extension at the end of the final cratonization of the NCC. Abstract: At the end of the Neoarchean continental evolution, voluminous syenogranites were emplaced in the North China Craton, together with other magmatic rocks (trondhjemite–tonalite–granodiorite (TTG), monzogranite, diorite, gabbro). Syenogranites are widely distributed in Anshan-Benxi, Qinhuangdao and western Shandong, and also occur in southern Jilin, northern Liaoning, northwestern Hebei and central Henan. Based on geological relationships, degree of metamorphism, deformation and magmatic zircon ages, two phases of syenogranite magmatism are recognized. Rocks produced during the first phase show a gneissic texture and were formed between 2.53 and 2.52Ga and locally comprise abundant TTG. Rocks of the second phase cut late Neoarchean TTG and supracrustal rocks, display a massive structure, and mainly formed between 2.52 and 2.50Ga. All syenogranites share the same features in major element compositions, being high in SiO2 and low in CaO, total FeO, MgO, TiO2 and P2O5. However, they are different in trace and REE compositions and can be subdivided into three types. (1) Type 1 shows a large variation in total REE contents, low (La/Yb) n ratios, strong negative Eu*/Eu anomalies and Ba depletion; (2) Type 2 is similar to Type 1 but has higher (La/Yb) n ratios. (3) Type 3 shows a large variation in total REE and (La/Yb) n ratios and significantly do not show strongly negative Eu*/Eu anomalies and Ba depletion. Whole-rock Sm–Nd isotopic compositions show large variations in ɛ Nd(t) values and t DM(Nd) modal ages, ranging from −9.49 to −4.72 and 3.70 to 3.25Ga (Type 1), 0.55–1.03 and 2.77–2.71Ga (Type 2) and −2.35 to 1.23 and 2.93–2.66Ga (Type 3), respectively. Hf isotopic compositions of zircons from three samples have ɛ Hf(t) values and t DM1(Hf) ages of 0.7–7.2 and 2.84–2.56Ga (Type 1), 2.6–7.4 and 2.74–2.56Ga (Type 2) and 2.1–6.3 and 2.76–2.60Ga (Type 3). It is concluded that syenogranites were generated by melting of continental crust with different mean crustal residence ages, and most of them were emplaced during the second phase (2.52–2.50Ga) in an extensional tectonic regime. The formation of these voluminous syenogranites marks a tectono-magmatic event resulting in stabilization of the North China Craton at the end of the Neoarchean. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In the Daqingshan area within the Khondalite Belt of the North China Craton, Paleoproterozoic gabbro and dolerite intrusions show amphibolite to granulite-facies metamorphism. U–Pb zircon dating and whole-rock geochemistry were undertaken on these rocks in order to understand the timing of mantle magmatism and thermal processes. Ten samples yielded zircon U–Pb formation ages of 2.46–2.44Ga, 1.97–1.92Ga and 1.84Ga and metamorphic ages of 1.95–1.83Ga. They are variable in geochemical composition with some being enriched in light rare earth and large ion lithosphere elements but depleted in Nb–Ta. Combined with previous results, it is concluded that mafic magmatism at 2.45–2.37Ga and 1.97–1.92Ga indicates two Paleoproterozoic extensional phases, with the latter accompanied by HT–UHT metamorphism as a result of underplating of mantle magma. Eastern Shandong is one of the important early Precambrian areas in the North China Craton, where extensive 2.5, 2.7 and 2.9 Ga magmatic activities have been identified, followed by very strong late Neoarchean and Paleoproterozoic tectono-thermal events. We carried out SHRIMP zircon dating, Hf-in-zircon isotope analysis and a whole-rock geochemical study on ca. 2.9 Ga Mesoarchean magmatic rocks. These include gneissic diorite, gneissic quartz diorite, gneissic tonalite and gneissic high-Si trondhjemite and were identified in five new areas. All these rocks contain ca. 2.5 Ga metamorphic zircons. The dioritic and tonalitic rocks are enriched in large ion lithosphile (LIL) elements (K, Rb, Ba) and depleted in Nb and P with moderate to highly fractionated REE patterns, similar in chemical compositions to Archean TTG rocks worldwide. The high-Si trondhjemites are characterized by very high SiO 2 and very low FeOt + MgO. The magmatic zircon grains from all these rocks are similar in their Hf isotopic compositions and have ɛ Hf ( t ) values ranging from + 1.3 to +9.9. Combined with previous work, our main conclusions are: (1) eastern Shandong underwent a major magmatic event at ca. 2.9 Ga; (2) diorites and tonalites formed by melting of thickened lower crust or the root of an oceanic plateau, whereas the high-Si trondhjemites were derived from melting of intermediate to felsic rocks; (3) the Mesoarchean (ca. 2.9 Ga) was a major period of juvenile crustal addition from the depleted mantle, earlier than the major crustal growth period at 2.7–2.8 Ga in the North China Craton; (4) the 2.7–2.9 Ga rocks underwent strong metamorphism at ca. 2.5 Ga, probably as a result of magmatic underplating. Abstract: Near Anshan city in the North China Craton, the oldest rocks in Asia (⩾3300Ma) have been thoroughly documented at two localities (Baijiafen and Dongshan). In this paper we report the full geological context for more ancient rocks from a third Anshan locality – the polyphase migmatite Shengousi Complex. SHRIMP U–Pb zircon dating indicates a protracted tectono-magmatic history for the Shengousi Complex: The oldest recognised component is banded trondhjemitic gneiss (3773±6Ma), which is veined by strongly deformed granitic pegmatite. These occur with a second generation of trondhjemitic rocks (3454±8 and 3448±9Ma). The next generation of plutonic rocks is a composite suite of iron-enriched mafic dykes (3332±6 and 3331±8Ma) with broadly coeval felsic veins (3311±4Ma). Finally there was intrusion of monzogranite (3129±6Ma). Strong deformation has generally brought these 3773–3129Ma plutonic phases into close concordance to form banded rocks. However, locally cross-cutting relationships are preserved in small lower strain domains, that give a relative chronology agreeing with the absolute zircon U–Pb chronology. All of this complex history is recorded in a single<50m wide outcrop. Some of the<3600Ma rocks of the Shengousi Complex contain 3780–3730 and 3660–3600Ma inherited zircon xenocrysts. The stronger prominence of 3660–3600Ma components distinguishes the Shengousi Complex from the Baijiafen and Dongshan complexes, where components of this age are rarer. One possibility is that at 3660–3600Ma, the Shengousi Complex was at a deeper crustal level than the Baijiafen and Dongshan complexes, and underwent migmatisation at that time. The ∼3450Ma igneous phases discovered in the Shengousi Complex are new ages for igneous rocks in the Anshan area. The Precambrian geology of the Anshan area is thus marked by polyphase Eoarchaean orthogneisses, the newly recognised ∼3450Ma phases, widespread 3360–3300 magmatic activity, found in association with Mesoarchaean plutonic rocks and the Neoarchaean Anshan Group and Palaeoproterozoic Liaohe Group metasedimentary rocks. This shows that the geology of the Anshan area has a strong similarity with the Narryer Gneiss Complex of Western Australia, which contains the polyphase Eoarchaean Meeberrie gneisses, the 3490–3440Ma Eurada gneiss association, ∼3300Ma granites and migmatisation, and is intercalated with younger Precambrian metasedimentary rocks of different ages containing Hadean detrital zircons. No other ancient gneiss complexes in the world show such a close match in their history with the Anshan area rocks. This means that the Anshan area is prospective for locating new occurrences of Hadean crustal components intercalated with younger sedimentary rocks. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
