Purpose: This study provides a bibliometric analysis of bank efficiency and competition over the past years (from 1993 to 2022) to (1) discover the past and current state of knowledge on bank competition and efficiency, (2) identify leading and authoritative journals and scholars who made significant contributions to the distribution of knowledge and impact, (3) identify nations that made a significant contribution and impact to the literature and (4) identify the structure of collaboration that exists between scholars in the areas of bank competition and efficiency and key thematic areas. Design/methodology/approach: A total number of 868 documents made up of articles, reviews, book chapters, book and conference papers from the Scopus database were gathered. This study used a bibliometric analytic approach. Findings: The number of documents on bank competitiveness and efficiency has increased significantly, as have their total publications, citations and national output. Additionally, the most esteemed and prestigious academic journals of eminent academics who have had a significant impact on the dissemination of knowledge on bank efficiency and competition literature champion papers on banking efficiency and competition. In terms of citation performance and collaborative efforts, the United States tops the developed countries, led by China, which is also the most productive. Additionally, single-country publications predominate in the literature, with China ranking first among the top five countries with corresponding authors. While the Lerner index, H-statistic, concentration index and market power were used to measure bank competitive behaviour, the data envelopment analysis approach predominates efficiency estimation techniques that are linked to cost, profit or revenue, scale, technical and productivity indexes. Originality/value: This study is one of the first to offer bibliometric evidence of both bank competition and efficiency. Due to budget and sensor technology constraints, a single sensor cannot simultaneously provide observational images with both a high spatial and temporal resolution. To solve the above problem, the spatiotemporal fusion (STF) method was proposed and proved to be an indispensable tool for monitoring land surface dynamics. There are relatively few systematic reviews of the STF method. Bibliometrics is a valuable method for analyzing the scientific literature, but it has not yet been applied to the comprehensive analysis of the STF method. Therefore, in this paper, we use bibliometrics and scientific mapping to analyze the 2967 citation data from the Web of Science from 1991 to 2023 in a metrological manner, covering the themes of STF, data fusion, multi-temporal analysis, and spatial analysis. The results of the literature analysis reveal that the number of articles displays a slow to rapid increase during the study period, but decreases significantly in 2023. Research institutions in China (1059 papers) and the United States (432 papers) are the top two contributors in the field. The keywords "Sentinel", "deep learning" (DL), and "LSTM" (Long Short-Term Memory) appeared most frequently in the past three years. In the future, remote sensing spatiotemporal fusion research can address more of the limitations of heterogeneous landscapes and climatic conditions to improve fused images' accuracy. Background: Somatic symptoms and related factors in patients with chronic heart failure have been extensively researched. However, more insight into the complex interconnections among these constructs is needed, as most studies focus on them independently from each other. Aims: The aim of this study is to gain a comprehensive understanding of how somatic symptoms and related factors are interconnected among patients with chronic heart failure. Methods: A total of 379 patients were enrolled. Network analysis was used to explore the interconnections among the somatic symptoms and related risk factors. Results: The four core symptoms of chronic heart failure were daytime dyspnea, dyspnea when lying down, fatigue and difficulty sleeping. Within the network, the edge weights of depression–anxiety, subjective social support–objective social support, and subjective social support–social support availability were more significant than others. Among physiological, psychological and environmental factors, the edge weights of NYHA–dyspnea, depression–difficulty sleeping, and social support availability–dyspnea when lying down were more significant than others. Depression and anxiety had the highest centrality, indicating stronger and closer connections with other nodes. Conclusions: Psychological and environmental factors stood out in the network, suggesting the potential value of interventions targeting these factors to improve overall health. Limited studies have explored core somatic symptoms in patients with chronic heart failure using network analysis.There is a lack of a holistic perspective when studying symptoms in patients with chronic heart failure and their association with various factors. Purpose: This paper explores international trade of the Chinese manufacturing industries through the lenses of network analysis (NA) to visualise the world trade network of the Chinese economy, describe its topology and better explain the international organisation of Chinese manufacturing industries. Design/methodology/approach: The authors built a dataset of 40,550 Chinese companies and their 107,026 subsidiaries in 118 countries from Orbis-BVD and used a NA to investigate the connection between China and other countries. In particular, the authors studied the connections between Chinese companies and their subsidiaries in order to build a network of Chinese industries. Findings: The authors found that the network of Chinese companies is ramified but not wide and it can be divided into two clusters. Moreover, the relations between China and other peripheral countries are strongly mediated by a few leading locations (e.g. Hong Kong and the USA). Originality/value: This paper contributes to the literature in several ways. First, the authors provide empirical evidence on the magnitude and ramifications of Chinese enterprises in the world. The existing studies generally focus on applying NA to sectoral insights (Mao and Yang, 2012; Shaikh et al., 2016; Zheng et al., 2016; Wanzenbö ck, 2018; Krichene et al., 2019), whereas in this work the authors take a comprehensive view of the entire Chinese manufacturing system. Second, this paper complements the existing literature identifying the difference between cluster levels in Chinese manufacturing (Wu and Jiang, 2011) by proposing a cluster centralisation method to analyse the international network of Chinese firms rather than just the national network. Peer attention is a significant feature in the horizontal cross-loading of EU countries when there are many uncertainties in the decision-making. Taking the case of the 28-EU countries' interactive media attention during China's second Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) forum in April 2019, this paper explores the two questions of who pays attention to whose action to the BRI, and what are the determinants of the peer attentions? The measurements from the network analysis identify the positions and roles of EU countries in the attention network. The gravity model further examines the determinants on different levels of peer attention flows. The findings suggest that the peer attention network the EU countries formulate is a core-periphery structure where big powers and forerunners construct the core and connect other big power and peripheral countries from the nearby to the far-reaching. Substantively, this paper contributes to the literature on the horizontal interaction of countries in response to China's engagement. Methodologically, the network analysis is an innovative method to study how a country receives the influence imposed by a single country, by a cluster of countries and the peer attention network as a whole. Innovations in precision agriculture continue to increase in both number and significance. Contemporaneously, given their expanding scope and application, the growing pool of technologies is increasingly complex. Although some recent attempts have been made, a knowledge gap remains in respect to the evolution of precision agricultural innovation. Synthesized, such knowledge should inform the untapped opportunities for innovation. This paper narrows this gap by conducting a network analysis of patent applications in areas concerning precision agriculture. Spanning the years from 1960 to 2021, the analysis shows an annual average growth in patent applications of 15.1%. During the last decade, this growth is almost entirely attributable to China and the USA. Priority innovation themes have been dynamic. Its phases can be characterized as 'motorized mechanization' (1960–1999), 'mechanical automation' (2000–2009), 'digital mechanization' (2010–2019), and 'digital automation' (2020–2021). The significance of information communication technology has grown in association with other innovation clusters, but a lag time has persisted in introducing innovations based on such technologies. This paper contributes to debates about the globalisation of higher education by providing a pioneering geographical exploration of Chinese–foreign cooperation in running transnational higher education, or TNHE, programs. Departing from widespread neoliberal and postcolonial critiques of TNHE, which tend to emphasise liberal market forces and Anglo‐American hegemony in the circulation of academic knowledge, our study examines how the Chinese state's developmental targets, strategic policies, and political–ideological considerations have shaped the evolutionary trajectory, geographical distribution, and cross‐border connections of China's TNHE programs. We demonstrate that the place‐based development of TNHE is mediated by governments' interventionist policies and embedded in existing higher education regimes, especially in the context of East Asian developmental states. By maintaining a higher education system dominated by public universities and by being the ultimate examination and approval authority, the Chinese government both determines the status of TNHE in the national higher education system, constrains the typologies and sources of knowledge flows, and shapes the national landscape of TNHE development. The territorial geographies of TNHE thus reflect complicated interactions between the state and the market, the global and the local, and economic and political/cultural forces. The global value chains have become the core skeleton of the global economy. As a large-scale international cooperation initiative, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI hereafter) may have a significant impact on the global economic landscape. In this context, the spatiotemporal pattern and evolution of the value chain connection of the Silk Road countries and whether the BRI will promote the value chain connections between China and these countries are important research questions for understanding the changing global economic landscape. This paper employs input-output analysis, network analysis and difference-in-differences based on Propensity Score Matching (PSM-DID) to conduct an in-depth quantitative study of these questions. The results show that, first, the overall value chain connection between China and the Silk Road countries has been rising since 2001. From the perspective of geographical distribution, Southeast Asia is the highest value chain connection region with China, and the growth in the central and eastern Europe is the most significant, whereas the central Asia is the lowest value connection region. From the perspective of complex network analysis, China's position in the network of value flow among the Silk Road countries has been increasing continuously, and it has been in the lead position since 2008. Besides, the implementation of the BRI has had a significant positive influence on the overall value chain connection between China and the Silk Road countries, but this positive influence is limited to the central and eastern Europe region, whereas it is not significant in other regions. Finally, this paper suggests that to promote the development of value chain connection, the Silk Road countries need to develop more specific policies related to value chains. Policymakers need to be able to correctly identify the comparative advantages of the region and the types of value chains that are compatible with them and then find suitable partners and formulate targeted promotion policies. Zero Energy Building (ZEB) is gaining more attention as a solution to significantly mitigate the environment concerns. However, a bibliometric analysis of the topic, a very useful method to analyze the database of published publications and reviews, is lacking. Especially, to provide when and how this concept has been brought out, insights into the state-of-art technology, the findings of the collaboration networks and the challenges of ZEB. To address this gap, in this paper, ZEB studies have been reviewed using multiple perspectives and analytical tools, such as VOSviewer and Biblioshiny to analyze the collaboration networks and the thematic trends of ZEB publications. The original data was retrieved in Scopus, a total of 1051 documents including research articles and reviews published from 1976 to 2020. The analysis of the number of publications over the years shows that the development of Zero energy building research has gone through three stages: a slow development period from 1076 to 1999, followed by a development from 2000 to 2010 and finally a rapid development from 2011 to 2020. The study also reveals different rankings, including the most widely collaborated scholars, the most cited scholars, the most published countries, etc. Therein, the United State, United Kingdom and China have the most research on ZEB. Based on the analysis of co-occurrence network and evolution of thematic keywords, it is found that energy efficiency and life cycle assessment (LCA) are the main challenges for the achievement of ZEB target. The topographical advantage is the contribution of topographic and traffic conditions to the operational efficiency such as afforestation, cutting, logging, and transportation of forestland. The classification of topographical advantage is of great importance to evaluate the costs of afforestation and cutting. In this paper, slope, distance, and elevation were selected as three main factors influencing the topographical advantage of forestland according to the Expert Scoring method. The Analytic Hierarchy Process was used to determine the weight of each factor, and ArcGIS10.2 software was used for spatial analysis of terrain and traffic data. The topographical advantage was then divided by the equal-difference method. We applied this method to Lingnan forest farm in Xiuning County, China. Results showed that it was difficult for afforestation and cutting in Lingnan forest farm. This paper presents a quantitative method combining spatial analysis and the Analytic Hierarchy Process for the topographical advantage, which will provide a scientific basis for the cost-effective accounting of afforestation. The aim of this work is to present a method for calculating seismic fragility function of urban road network. In this paper, urban road system is simplified to a planar network. The spatial correlation of seismic ground motions is considered. The damage probability of network edge is determined by the fragility function of single road section. By repeating simulation, a large number of samples of post-earthquake road network are obtained. Their damage states are classified as minor, moderate, extensive and complete by piece number and diameter of the maximal piece. The seismic fragility function of road network is assumed in the form of lognormal cumulative distribution function and its parameters are identified by fitting the fragility function to the exceeding probability of the damage states. To demonstrate the practicality of the proposed method, an application to the urban road network of Tangshan City is performed. The case study indicates that the rare earthquake may cause the disconnection and fragmentation of the road network with high probability. The proposed framework is a valuable contribution to the seismic performance evaluation of urban road system and provides engineers and practitioners with a tool to design road network in high seismic hazard zone. Background: As a common social phenomenon, nurses' occupational burnout has a high incidence rate, which seriously affects their mental health and nursing level. The current assessment mostly uses the total score model and explores the influence of external factors on burnout, while the correlation between burnout items or dimensions is less explored. Ignoring the correlation between the items or dimensions may result in a limited understanding of nurse occupational burnout. This paper explores the item and dimension network structure of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) in Chinese nurses, so as to gain a deeper understanding of this psychological construct and identify potential targets for clinical intervention. Methods: A total of 493 Chinese nurses were recruited by cluster sampling. All participants were invited to complete the survey on symptoms of burnout. Network analysis was used to investigate the item network of MBI-GS. In addition, community detection was used to explore the communities of MBI-GS, and then network analysis was used to investigate the dimension network of MBI-GS based on the results of community detection. Regularized partial correlation and non-regularized partial correlation were used to describe the association between different nodes of the item network and dimension network, respectively. Expected influence and predictability were used to describe the relative importance and the controllability of nodes in both the item and dimension networks. Results: In the item network, most of the strongly correlated edges were in the same dimension of emotional exhaustion (E), cynicism (C) and reduced professional efficacy (R), respectively. E5 (Item 5 of emotional exhaustion, the same below) "I feel burned out from my work", C1 "I have become more callous toward work since I took this job", and R3 "In my opinion, I am good at my job" had the highest expected influence (z-scores = 0.99, 0.81 and 0.94, respectively), indicating theirs highest importance in the network. E1 "I feel emotionally drained from my work" and E5 had the highest predictability (E1 = 0.74, E5 = 0.74). It shows that these two nodes can be interpreted by their internal neighbors to the greatest extent and have the highest controllability in the network. The spinglass algorithm and walktrap algorithm obtained exactly the same three communities, which are consistent with the original dimensions of MBI-GS. In the dimension network, the emotional exhaustion dimension was closely related to the cynicism dimension (weight = 0.65). Conclusions: The network model is a useful tool to study burnout in Chinese nurses. This study explores the item and domain network structure of nurse burnout from the network perspective. By calculating the relevant indicators, we found that E5, C1, and R3 were the most central nodes in the item network and cynicism was the central node in the domain network, suggesting that interventions aimed at E5, C1, R3 and cynicism might decrease the overall burnout level of Chinese nurses to the greatest extent. Co‐production of films entails a variety of transborder mobility and trans‐local production networks, which are further complicated by state intervention through co‐production treaties or arrangements. This paper unravels the process of Mainland China–Hong Kong film co‐production that has been explosive after the promulgation of 'Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement' (CEPA). Drawing on the information of all Mainland–Hong Kong co‐produced films between 1998 and 2017, we chart the collaborative networks of studios and creative staffs and examine the commercial and artistic performances of co‐produced films to illustrate the impact of regulatory reform on the evolution of cross‐border film co‐production. We argue that CEPA is among the series of national regulatory reforms to enable marketisation of the film industry and, further, to construct an imagined new identity of Chinese culture at the supranational scale. This paper proposes an innovative framework that identifies the structural characteristics and the evolution process of real estate industry in China from 2002 to 2017 through a series of modified network analysis methods. Our results suggest that the growth momentum of real estate industry can be extended to a wide range of industries especially the financial industry while the systematic risk of the industry is becoming evident. Therefore, macro-prudential policies tailored to local conditions should continue to be the first line of defense. In addition, guiding policies towards professional service for developers are supposed to be emphasized since Chinese real estate industry is within the transition from construction-oriented towards service-oriented. Moreover, to satisfy the demand of citizens for improved housing and promote the upgrading of housing consumption is also critical because the role as supplier of housing in macroeconomy is becoming increasingly important according to our calculation. This paper aims to optimize a desirable fare structure for the public transit service along a bus-subway corridor with the consideration of those factors related to equity in trip, including travel distance and comfort level. The travel distance factor is represented by the distance-based fare strategy, which is an existing differential strategy. The comfort level one is considered in the area-based fare strategy which is a new differential strategy defined in this paper. Both factors are referred to by the combined fare strategy which is composed of distance-based and area-based fare strategies. The flat fare strategy is applied to determine a reference level of social welfare and obtain the general passenger flow along transit lines, which is used to divide areas or zones along the corridor. This problem is formulated as a bi-level program, of which the upper level maximizes the social welfare and the lower level capturing traveler choice behavior is a variable-demand stochastic user equilibrium assignment model. A genetic algorithm is applied to solve the bi-level program while the method of successive averages is adopted to solve the lower-level model. A series of numerical experiments are carried out to illustrate the performance of the models and solution methods. Numerical results indicate that all three differential fare strategies play a better role in enhancing the social welfare than the flat fare strategy and that the fare structure under the combined fare strategy generates the highest social welfare and the largest resulting passenger demand, which implies that the more equity factors a differential fare strategy involves the more desirable fare structure the strategy has. Diversity indices (dominance and evenness) and ecological spatial structure (lifestyles and relative abundances) are important features of Changhsingian brachiopod communities prior to the end‐Permian mass extinction (EPME) and could predict temporal and spatial extinction patterns during the EPME. In South China, Changhsingian brachiopod communities show higher diversity than other contemporaneous brachiopod communities in the world and have been reported from a variety of sedimentary environments. In this paper, brachiopods from 18 sections in South China were selected to divide communities and compare their ecological structure. Based on the results of network analysis, cluster analysis and quantitative data from the selected sections, we show that Changhsingian brachiopod communities in South China can be categorized into three assemblages along a marine depth gradient: the Neochonetes–Fusichonetes–Paryphella Assemblage from the shallow‐water clastic‐rock facies, Spinomarginifera–Peltichia–Oldhamina Assemblage from the shallow‐water carbonate platform facies and Fusichonetes–Crurithyris Assemblage from the deep‐water siliciclastic intracontinental basin facies. Compared with communities from carbonate platform facies, the communities from siliciclastic facies were characterized by high dominance, low evenness and low lifestyle diversity, which might be important biotic factors leading to earlier extinctions. After the extinction began in all environments, the whole earliest Triassic brachiopod community was first dominated by Fusichonetes and then by Crurithyris. These patterns of domination and replacement could be explained by morphological and ecological advantages. The domination of these two genera, which were already adapted to the oxygen and food‐limited deep‐water habitat, indicates that the cooler deep‐water environment might have been a relatively less stressed habitat after the beginning of the EPME. This suggests that global warming might be the main trigger among the previously proposed synergistic environmental stresses, while anoxia might not, at least for the beginning of EPME. As of November 1, 2018, China's "One Belt and One Road" Initiative has involved 123 countries and promoted worldwide communication, cooperation and trade exchange. This paper constructs correlation networks of exchange rates among the countries along “The Belt and Road” and analyzes the risk contagion structure. It is found that when “The Belt and Road” initiative is initialized, countries in Eastern Europe occupy important positions in the network and play a vital role in the spreading of exchange rate risks; however, during the process of “The Belt and Road” initiative, the exchange rate risks are decentralized geographically, whereas they are centralized in countries that have in-depth communication and cooperation. The minimum Spanning Tree method is also proposed to investigate the structure of complex networks. It is found that the geographical link between exchange rate fluctuations and correlations among the countries has been strengthened while China has become an important node in the exchange rate network after the launch of “The Belt and Road” initiative. China's large-scale HSR network has a significant influence on both accessibility and connectivity, but little attention has been paid to its impacts on connectivity. Changes in connectivity largely affect the external relations among cities, thus influencing the structure of the city network. This paper examines the impacts of China's HSR network on the overall connectivity and nodal centrality of the city network, as evaluated by passenger trains from 2003 to 2014. This paper employs the graph index, average path length, clustering coefficient and three indicators of centrality, namely weighted degree centrality (WDC), weighted closeness centrality (WCC) and weighted betweenness centrality (WBC). The results show that the HSR network largely increased overall connectivity according to the increasing Beta index and clustering coefficient, and decreasing average path length. The HSR lines also increased the average centrality of the city network and the inequality of nodal centrality according to the WCC indicator, but they decreased the inequality of nodal centrality with regard to the WDC and WBC indicators. Meanwhile, the growing HSR network led to the centrality tended to intensify in large cities in terms of the WCC indicator, but intensify in small cities according to the WDC and WBC indicators. Spatially, the cities with HSR stations, population over 3 million and GDP over 100 billion RMB saw higher increases in centrality than the others; the cities with high values of WDC and WCC, especially the top 20 cities, tended to concentrate in the populous areas with well-developed economies (e.g., Yangtze River Delta), whereas the cities with high WBC values in 2014 were coupled with the hub cities of regional railway management administration. In this paper, based on the panel data of 31 provinces and cities in China from 1991 to 2016, the regional development efficiency matrix of high-end talent is obtained by DEA method, and the matrix is converted into a continuous change of complex networks through the construction of sliding window. Using a series of continuous changes in the complex network topology statistics, the characteristics of regional high-end talent development efficiency system are analyzed. And the results show that the average development efficiency of high-end talent in the western region is at a low level. After 2005, the national regional high-end talent development efficiency network has both short-range relevance and long-range relevance in the evolution process. The central region plays an important intermediary role in the national regional high-end talent development system. And the western region has high clustering characteristics. With the implementation of the high-end talent policies with regional characteristics by different provinces and cities, the relevance of high-end talent development efficiency in various provinces and cities presents a weakening trend, and the geographical characteristics of high-end talent are more and more obvious. Circuity, defined as the ratio of the shortest network distance to the Euclidean distance between one origin–destination (O-D) pair, can be adopted as a helpful evaluation method of indirect degrees of train paths. In this paper, the maximum circuity of the paths of operated trains is set to be the threshold value of the circuity of high-speed train paths. For the shortest paths of any node pairs, if their circuity is not higher than the threshold value, the paths can be regarded as the reasonable paths. With the consideration of a certain relative or absolute error, we cluster the reasonable paths on the basis of their inclusion relationship and the center path of each class represents a passenger transit corridor. We take the high-speed rail (HSR) network in China at the end of 2014 as an example, and obtain 51 passenger transit corridors, which are alternative sets of train paths. Furthermore, we analyze the circuity distribution of paths of all node pairs in the network. We find that the high circuity of train paths can be decreased with the construction of a high-speed railway line, which indicates that the structure of the HSR network in China tends to be more complete and the HSR network can make the Chinese railway network more efficient. Aimed at the complicated problems of attraction characteristics regarding passenger flow in urban rail transit network, the concept of the gravity field of passenger flow is proposed in this paper. We establish the computation methods of field strength and potential energy to reveal the potential attraction relationship among stations from the perspective of the collection and distribution of passenger flow and the topology of network. As for the computation methods of field strength, an optimum path concept is proposed to define betweenness centrality parameter. Regarding the computation of potential energy, Compound Simpson’s Rule Formula is applied to get a solution to the function. Taking No. 10 Beijing Subway as a practical example, an analysis of simulation and verification is conducted, and the results shows in the following ways. Firstly, the bigger field strength value between two stations is, the stronger passenger flow attraction is, and the greater probability of the formation of the largest passenger flow of section is. • We compared the structural characteristics of 18 urban agglomerations in China. • Our framework contained analysis of 3 different scales based on 4 elements' flows. • Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao urban Agglomeration had the greatest average flow (5.15). • Shandong Peninsula Urban Agglomeration had the best performance in overall network. • Cities with high centrality were in the bidirectional or main spillover subgroups. Flows of different elements among cities can affect urban organizational structures, leading to specific links between and roles for cities within urban agglomerations. Previous studies have mainly focused on flows produced by specific elements in a single urban agglomeration, and they cannot reveal differences in organizational structures affected by multiple elements among different urban agglomerations. Therefore we selected 18 typical urban agglomerations in China and explored their structural characteristics under comprehensive effects of four elements: economy, resources, population and technology, with gravity model and social network analysis. Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Urban Agglomeration had a maximum flow intensity of 5.15, this concentration range was the largest from 0.65 to 3.75, indicating that more elements flowed internally. Shandong Peninsula Urban Agglomeration had the largest network density at 0.412, the lowest efficiency at 0.567, and the lowest hierarchy at 0.000, showing that intercity relationships within SP were the tightest among the18 urban agglomerations. Geographical proximity and topological structure of subgroups proved that connections among subgroups were not complex, and cities of different provinces lacked close interactions. Furthermore, most of the key cities with high centrality indexes were municipalities directly under the Central Government or provincial capitals; these cities played important roles in networks and were distributed into "main spillover" and "bidirectional spillover" subgroups. This paper provides a unified analytical framework aimed at urban agglomerations that accounts for flows of multiple types of elements and explores urban organizational structures, and our results could provide scientific guidance for promoting the coordinated and sustainable development of urban agglomerations. Agglomeration economies have been an increasingly prevalent interest in research communities of regional and urban studies. Recent evidence reports the importance of agglomeration economies closely associated with the urban network. However, limited efforts have been proposed to emphasize the spatial-functional roles of regional agglomeration and their network behaviors. With the use of geospatial big data and network analytical approaches, this paper, therefore, presents a data-driven intraregional case study in China's Greater Bay Area (GBA) to investigate the curiosities related to a regional network of sectoral agglomeration economies. By extracting industry-related points of interest (POIs), industrial activities are derived by topic modeling in representing industrial functional topics. Bipartite network projection is implemented to construct a one-mode network based on the two-mode agglomeration network. Community detection is further applied over the agglomeration networks, for uncovering groups of agglomerations that are closely connected by their industrial functions. The results confirm substantial geographic heterogeneities of agglomeration networks related to locational advantages. A robust radiation effect on the north-western hinterland is observed regarding material and mechanical production industries. The effectiveness of rapid rail transit system is analyzed using tools of complex network for the first time. We evaluated the effectiveness of the system in Beijing quantitatively from different perspectives, including descriptive statistics analysis, bridging property, centrality property, ability of connecting different part of the system and ability of disease spreading. The results showed that the public transport of Beijing does benefit from the rapid rail transit lines, and the benefit of different regions from RRTS is gradually decreased from the north to the south. The paper concluded with some policy suggestions regarding how to promote the system. This study offered significant insight that can help understand the public transportation better. The high speed railway (HSR) network in China has developed rapidly over the past ten years, offering a new means of travel and also regenerating and redistributing economic activities by encouraging population mobility. Using the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration as a case study, this paper investigates the redistribution of economic activities resulting from HSRs by developing a locally weighted regression model, geographically network weighted regression (GNWR). This GNWR is formulated in light of the current account identity in economics, and incorporates the changes in network-based travel time from HSRs and the degrees of cities, thereby offering a more appropriate method of capturing the movement of economic activities. Importantly, the coefficients in GNWR can reflect the net inflow or outflow of different cities in terms of their residents' investment and/or consumption. The results of the analysis show that HSRs have significantly changed the spatial redistribution of economic activities due to more frequent and rapid mobility. For investment activities, HSR drew the inflow to the second tier cities alongside HSR and strengthened the status of core cities; for consumption activities, HSR motivated the inflow to non-HSR cities located in the peripheral areas. Although studies have increasingly linked air pollution to specific health outcomes, less well understood is how public perceptions of air quality respond to changing pollutant levels. The growing availability of air pollution measurements and the proliferation of social media provide an opportunity to gauge public discussion of air quality conditions. In this paper, we consider particulate matter (PM) measurements from four Chinese megacities (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu) together with 112 million posts on Weibo (a popular Chinese microblogging system) from corresponding days in 2011–2013 to identify terms whose frequency was most correlated with PM levels. These correlations are used to construct an Air Discussion Index (ADI) for estimating daily PM based on the content of Weibo posts. In Beijing, the Chinese city with the most PM as measured by U.S. Embassy monitor stations, we found a strong correlation (R = 0.88) between the ADI and measured PM. In other Chinese cities with lower pollution levels, the correlation was weaker. Nonetheless, our results show that social media may be a useful proxy measurement for pollution, particularly when traditional measurement stations are unavailable, censored or misreported. A decade after retrocession to China, Hong Kong still has limited democracy. Only half of the legislature is directly elected by the people, and the Chief Executive - the leader of Hong Kong government - is chosen by an election committee of 800 people, most of them loyal to Beijing. In December 2007, the Chinese Central Government announced that the direct election of the Chief Executive and the whole legislature may be implemented from 2017 and 2020, respectively. Still, in this paper it is suggested that real democracy in the foreseeable future is unlikely. This paper demonstrates the existence of a “power elite” of tightly knit business-state networks in Hong Kong society and argues that this constitutes a systemic barrier against further democratic development. Central to the discussion is an analysis of the formation and composition of the legislature and the relations to the elite-interlocks among influential organisations in society. Phosphorus (P) is an indispensable element for all life on Earth, and clarifying soil P components can favor the precise management of soil nutrients. This paper hypothesized that soil total P (TP) and P components in different aggregates and leachable fractions differed between poplar shelterbelts and farmlands. Such changes were strongly associated with fungal variations. Total 24 soil samples were collected from 0 to 40 cm soil layers in 12 pairs of poplar shelterbelts and neighboring farmlands in four sites in Northeast China Plain. The soil P was determined in three soil aggregates (macroaggregates, microaggregates, and silt + clay) and nine sequential leachable fractions (H 2 O-Pi, NaHCO 3 -Pi, NaHCO 3 -Po, NaOH-Pi, NaOH-Po, HCl-Pi, conc. HCl-Pi, conc. HCl-Po, and Re-P), and soil fungi in bulk soils were analyzed by Illumina sequencing. Our data revealed that poplar shelterbelts had 27.75% lower soil TP than neighboring farmlands, mainly occurring in macroaggregates (0.25–2 mm) with no changes in microaggregates and silt + clay. In leachable P fractions, reduced TP was caused by changes in HCl-Pi contributed 47.8%, and NaOH-Pi contributed 34.2% (low or medium plant-available). Poplar shelterbelts decreased the soil fungi diversity and network relations with fewer nodes, edges, and modularity but contained more ectomycorrhizal and less pathogenic fungi than farmlands. The macroaggregates P reduction was mainly driven by fungal community changes, while the fraction-P changes were more closely related to soil pH and tree growth of poplar trees. Our findings highlighted high P depletion from poplars, possible risks for plant availability, and soil fungi roles in the China shelterbelt program, supporting the evaluation and management of soil P-related nutrients in the farmland afforesting system. Hierarchy is an important property of a street network, which suggests that only a small number of streets are prominent. A previous empirical study of a European city has identified four levels of scale in a street network, namely the top 1%, top 20%, bottom 80%, and bottom 20%. This paper investigates such street hierarchies in a large Asian city, Wuhan, with a complicated network of streets. Based on network analysis, we find that street hierarchies in this case study are slightly different so that the fourth scale is adjusted from the initial 20 to 25%. The detected street hierarchies are further compared to the intensity of large-scale traffic flows at different time scales. We find that distributions of both daily and hourly traffic conform well to the street hierarchies. More specifically, the 20% of top streets accommodate about 98% of traffic flow, and the 1% of top streets account for more than 60% of traffic flow. Moreover, this finding indicates that the current street network of Wuhan needs to be improved because the top 20% of streets are rather overburdened leading to traffic congestion. Large-scale and diffuse population flow amplifies the localized COVID-19 outbreak into a widespread pandemic. Network analysis provides a new methodology to uncover the topology and evolution of the population flow and understand its influence on the early dynamics of COVID-19 transmission. In this paper, we simulated 42 transmission scenarios to show the distribution of the COVID-19 outbreak across China. We predicted some original (Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen) had higher total aggregate population outflows than Wuhan, indicating larger spread scopes and faster growth rates of COVID-19 outbreak. We built an importation risk model to identify some major cities (Dongguan and Foshan) with the highest total importation risk values and the highest standard deviations, indicating the core transmission chains (Dongguan-Shenzhen, Foshan-Guangzhou). We built the population flow networks to analyze their Spatio-temporal characteristics and identify the influential sub-groups and spreaders. By removing different influential spreaders, we identified Guangzhou can most influence the network's topological characteristics, and some major cities' degree centrality was significantly decreased. Wild fish faeces play an important role in mediating marine organic carbon cycle, but the faeces released dissolved organic matter (DOM) and its potentials in contribution to refractory DOM is unclear. The mixed wild fish (including mesopelagic fish) faecal samples from the northern South China Sea were collected and incubated up to 75 days using the waters collected at 800 m depth of the same site, to reveal the stability of the faeces released DOM. Our result showed that the faeces had a good DOM-release potential and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was up to 150 μM in the first day and reached its maximum (172 μM) on day 3, which was in comparison with the control group (DOC <70 μM). In our incubations, the faecal samples contributed net DOC of 110 μM, in which 42 μM persisted till the end of the 75 days dark incubation. This meant the faeces-released DOC had a refractory fraction of 38% over the incubation. Total hydrolysable amino acids concentration significantly dropped, and amino acids molecular indicator (DI, AA C yield and D/L ratio) changes over the incubation indicated the fast transformation of DOM from labile to degraded stage. Network analysis was applied to the amino acids and our result showed that D-form amino acids were almost positively coupled with L-form amino acids. Glycine (in mol%) showed consistent accumulation along with DOM degradation. Also, glycine was at the key node position of the amino acids network, showing negative relation with all other amino acids enantiomers in both faeces group and control group. China invested vastly in overseas infrastructure projects under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which aims at improving international connectivity through collaboration with partner countries. For these countries, capturing the developments from BRI's massive transport infrastructure investments becomes a crucial economic multiplier. But there are few methods available in the existing literature. In this paper, we developed an analytical protocol that evaluates the changes in transport network connectivity before and after the BRI transport infrastructure construction, using open-source data and tools, and tested it on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the flagship project of BRI. Results show that China's transport infrastructure investment may improve connectivity and the potential for economic agglomeration in certain key cities and some regions in Pakistan but would widen the development inequality in the country. Our protocol benefits are threefold. First, it provides a quantitative estimation of the change in economic geography, accessibility and agglomeration-forming potentials, resulting from China's transport infrastructure investment. Second, it can be replicated to different scales and locations with easy-access open data. Last, its usage of open-source platforms and open data enables wide adoption by the public, especially agents with limited resources. Potential beneficiaries such as the governments of recipient countries, academics, funding providers, and private sectors can follow our protocol to assess the likely regional accessibility patterns and potential spatial economy from BRI-related transport infrastructure developments. The tradition of keeping written records of gift received during household ceremonies in many countries offers researchers an underutilized means of data collection for social network analysis. This paper first summarizes unique features of the gift record data that circumvent five prevailing sampling and measurement issues in the literature, and we discuss their advantages over existing studies at both the individual level and the dyadic link level using previous data sources. We then document our research project in rural China that implements a multiple wave census-type household survey and a long-term gift record collection. The pattern of gift-giving in major household social events and its recent escalation is analyzed. There are significantly positive correlations between gift network centrality and various forms of informal insurance. Finally, economic inequality and competitive marriage market are among the main demographic and socioeconomic determinants of the observed gift network structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: China has become a significant player in the international standardization regime of telecommunications. It is currently attempting international standardization of its indigenous technologies. This paper examines how China’s approach for standardization has evolved in the cases of locally developed 3G and 4G mobile standards: TD-SCDMA and TD-LTE. The authors address the question in terms of alliance formation. They apply network analysis, which visualizes the formation and transformation of alliances. They argue that China’s approach to standardization has evolved from techno-nationalism to techno-globalism. In building, developing, and maintaining alliances, relatively more weight is placed on links with foreign firms over time than on those with local firms, and China is increasingly open to foreign firms to gain their support and cooperation, which is required for international standardization and commercialization of locally-developed standards. This study makes a contribution in that it applies a quantitative method of network analysis and thereby visualizes the formation of alliances in 3G and 4G mobile communication industries. This paper looks at the current state of multilateral development banks (MDBs) for climate change measures and the funding status of those invested in mitigation technology in order to briefly review the current outcome of the technology transfer and financial support. In other words, the aim of this study is to collect and analyze information about the current status of total investment in the field of technology for mitigating GHGs (Greenhouse Gases) from MDBs and identify implications of the status. In this study, a screening technique has been used three times to make a database for project information in the field of mitigation of climate change. So far, based on the finalized DB (Database), mitigation technology projects supported by MDBs have been investigated; based on the result, a connected analysis has been conducted between MDBs, mitigation technology, and countries. According to the derived current status, project support in renewable energy and energy demand areas turned out to be the highest at 75% of the entire mitigation technology. Rather than the renewable energy and energy demand areas where climate technology projects have frequently been performed throughout the world, it was confirmed that long-term climate technology projects for GHG fixation were being performed. According to the results of comparison and analysis of countries with high GHG emissions and their centrality, centrality turned out to be high in the field of GHG fixation in China, the country with the highest GHG emissions. This seems to indicate that countries emitting a substantial amount of GHGs will invest more on projects in the field of GHG fixation as well as on projects on renewable energy. Thus, this study is expected to contribute to understanding the trends of climate technology projects for coping with climate change and using them in establishing future policies on climate technology.
