Simple Summary: Trismus is a common complication in oral cancer patients that may influence surgical outcomes. This retrospective matched cohort analysis examined the influence of preoperative trismus on survival outcomes in 40 male Taiwanese oral cancer patients undergoing transoral robotic surgery (TORS). Through 1:1 propensity score matching, 20 trismus patients were compared to 20 non-trismus controls. TORS demonstrated comparable short-term surgical outcomes in trismus patients compared to non-trismus patients. There were no significant differences between groups in operation time, blood loss, margin status, flap reconstruction rates, duration of nasogastric tube feeding, or length of hospital stay. Analysis of long-term oncological outcomes demonstrated similar 5-year disease-free survival between groups, indicating comparable tumor control. However, trismus patients experienced significantly poorer 5-year overall survival. After adjusting for confounders, trismus independently conferred a 13-fold higher long-term mortality risk. Ultimately, this study highlights preoperative trismus as a harbinger of non-inferior short-term surgical outcomes, but diminished long-term survival in oral cancer patients treated robotically, even among those with equivalent tumor persistence following surgery. Further research should explore mechanisms linking trismus to mortality and approaches to improve outcomes in this population. However, the impact of trismus on survival outcomes in oral cancer patients undergoing transoral robotic surgery (TORS) is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the associations between trismus and surgical outcomes in Taiwanese male oral cancer patients treated with TORS. We conducted a retrospective propensity score-matched cohort study of 40 Taiwanese male oral cancer patients who underwent TORS between 2016 and 2022. Overall, 20 patients with trismus were matched to 20 patients without trismus. TORS achieved similar operative and short-term clinical outcomes in trismus patients to non-trismus patients. There were no significant differences between groups in operation time, blood loss, margin status, flap reconstruction rates, duration of nasogastric tube feeding, or length of hospital stay. Kaplan–Meier and Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were performed to compare overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) between the two groups. The overall survival (OS) rate at three years was significantly lower in patients with trismus than those without trismus (27.1% vs. 95.0%, log-rank p = 0.02). However, there was no significant difference in disease-free survival (DFS) rates between the trismus and non-trismus groups (36.6% vs. 62.7%, log-rank p = 0.87). After adjusting for confounders, trismus was independently associated with a 13-fold increased risk of mortality (adjusted HR 12.87, 95% CI 1.55–106.50, p < 0.05). In conclusion, trismus appears to be an independent prognostic factor for reduced long-term OS in Taiwanese male oral cancer patients undergoing TORS, though short-term surgical outcomes were non-inferior in the trismus patients. Simple Summary: Oral cancer is a significant health problem in Taiwan, with high rates of occurrence and cancer-related deaths. Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) is an innovative surgical approach that might offer treatment advantages and improve outcomes. We conducted a study in a Taiwanese hospital with 72 patients in each group, comparing TORS to conventional open surgery over three years. After carefully matching the patients, we found that those who had TORS had a better overall survival compared to the open-surgery group. We used various analyses to confirm that TORS was linked to a lower risk of death. The TORS group had significantly better survival rates at all stages of cancer, and it was particularly effective for late stages, i.e., stage III and IV patients. In conclusion, our study suggests that TORS could be a better option for treating oral cancer in Taiwan, offering improved chances of survival and potential advantages over conventional surgery. Oral cancer poses a major health challenge in Taiwan, consistently ranking among the highest globally in both incidence and cancer-related mortality. A case–control study with propensity score matching was conducted in a single teaching hospital in Taiwan. It included 72 oral cancer patients in each group to analyze and compare survival outcomes between the surgical approaches. Moreover, the TORS group exhibited improved overall survival rates for stage III and IV patients compared to the conventional open-surgery group. (1) Background: No association between air pollution and periodontitis has yet been shown. Thus, we merged two nationwide databases to evaluate the risk of periodontitis in Taiwanese residents with long-term exposure to air pollution. (2) Methods: We conducted a nationwide retrospective cohort study using the Longitudinal Generation Tracking Database and the Taiwan Air Quality-Monitoring Database. The daily average air pollutant concentrations were categorized into quartiles (Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4). We carried out Cox proportional hazards models to compute the hazard ratios of periodontitis, with 95% confidence intervals, in Q2–Q4 of the daily average air pollutant concentrations, compared with Q1. (3) Results: the adjusted HR (95 CI%) for periodontitis in Q2–Q4 increased with increased exposure to SO2, CO, NO, NO2, NOX, PM2.5, and PM10 from 1.72 (1.70, 1.76) to 4.86 (4.78–4.94); from 1.89 (1.85–1.93) to 2.64 (2.59–2.70); from 1.04 (1.02–1.06) to 1.52 (1.49–1.55); from 1.61 (1.58–1.64) to 2.51 (2.47–2.56); from 1.48 (1.45–1.51) to 2.11 (2.07–2.15); from 2.02 (1.98–2.06) to 22.9 (22.4–23.4, and from 2.71 (2.66–2.77) to 17.2 (16.8–17.6), respectively, compared to Q1. Background: The association between exposure to air pollution and sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) has not been extensively discussed in the literature. Therefore, we conducted this nationwide study to evaluate the risk of SSNHL in Taiwanese residents with exposure to air pollution.Methods: We enrolled subjects aged older than 20 years with no history of SSNHL from 1998 to 2010, and followed up until developing SSNHL, withdrawn from the National Health Insurance program, and the end of the database (2011/12/31). The air quality data are managed by Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration. The annual concentrations of PM2.5, SO2, CO, NO, and NO2 from 1998 to 2010 were classified into the three levels according to tertiles. We calculated the annual average of pollutants from baseline until the end of the study, and classified into tertiles. The adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) was estimated by using the multivariate Cox proportional hazard model.Results: When considered continuous air pollutants concentration, subjects who exposed with higher concentration of CO (aHR = 2.16, 95% CI 1.50-3.11), NO (aHR = 1.02, 95% CI 1.01-1.03), and NO2 (aHR = 1.02, 95% CI 1.01-1.04) developing significant higher risk of SSNHL. When classified air pollutants concentration into low, moderate and high level by tertiles, and selected low level as reference, patients exposed with moderate (aHR = 1.56, 95% CI 1.20-2.04) or high level (aHR = 1.33, 95% CI 1.01-1.75) of PM2.5 showed significant higher risk of developing SSNHL.Conclusion: This study indicated an increased risk of SSNHL in residents with long-term exposure to air pollution.
