During the routine surveillance, we isolated nine H4N6 subtype avian influenza viruses (AIVs) in Jiangsu Province, China, in March 2023. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that nine H4N6 viruses belonged to the Eurasian lineage and underwent complex genetic recombination among Asian countries during their evolution. It is particularly noteworthy that the PB2 and PB1 genes of our representative virus were descended from clade 2.3.4.4b H5 high-pathogenic AIVs in Japan. Mutations of D3V and D622G in PB1, N66S in PB1-F2, N30D, I43M, and T215A in M1, and P42S and I106M in NS1 were observed in nine isolates, which may increase the pathogenicity of the viruses in mice. The receptor binding analysis showed that the tested H4N6 virus could bind to both avian-type and human-type receptors. Vitro infection kinetics revealed that the representative virus could efficiently replicate in mammalian cells, including MDCK and 293T cells. Pathogenicity tests in mice indicated that the representative virus could replicate in nasal turbinates and lungs without prior adaptation. Our data reveal the potential public health issues represented by H4N6 viruses from wild birds and highlight the need to strengthen routine surveillance of wild birds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Both types of EV71 vaccines showed satisfactory safety profiles in the target population. • The AEFI profiles of EV71 vaccines were identical to those in pre-marketing studies. • AEFIs after EV71 vaccination were mild and common. Two types of enterovirus 71 (EV71) vaccines, manufactured using human diploid (H2) and Vero cells, have been administered in Jiangsu Province, China since 2017. In this study, we evaluated their safety profiles using records collected from the Chinese National Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFIs) Information System (CNAEFIS) and Electronic Immunization Registries System (EIRS) between 2017 and 2019. Demographic characteristics of the patients, AEFI incidence rates(IRs), symptoms, and time intervals were summarized from the reported AEFI data in the CNAEFIS. Also, the administered doses of the two vaccines were exported from the EIRS to calculate the IRs of AEFIs and thus compare the AEFIs between the two types of EV71 vaccines. In total, 209, 407, and 344 AEFIs cases following EV71 vaccine administration were reported during 2017, 2018, and 2019, respectively, yielding IRs of 59.2, 48.2, and 54.2 per 100,000 doses, respectively. Fever, irritability, allergic eruptions, fatigue, loss of appetite, redness and induration at the injection site were the most commonly reported AEFIs. No significant differences in rare reactions were found between the two types of EV71 vaccinations. The majority of AEFIs were developed within 30 min to 3 days after administration. EV71 vaccines showed satisfactory safety profiles since their first use 3 years ago in the Jiangsu Province. The AEFI profiles were identical to those in pre-marketing studies; most AEFIs after vaccination were mild and common. Background: The incidence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) has decreased year by year in China after the expansion of vaccination, but there is still a high disease burden in Jiangsu Province of China. Methods: The year-by-year incidence data of HBV in Jiangsu Province from 1990 to 2021 were collected. The incidence rates of males and females age groups were clustered by systematic clustering, and the incidence rates of each age group were analyzed and studied by using Joinpoint regression model and age-period-cohort effect model (APC). Results: Joinpoint regression model and APC model showed a general decrease in HBV prevalence in both males and females. In addition, the results of the APC model showed that the age, period, and cohort effects of patients all affected the incidence of HBV, and the incidence was higher in males than in females. The incidence is highest in the population between the ages of 15 and 30 years (mean: 21.76/100,000), especially in males (mean: 31.53/100,000) than in females (mean:11.67/100,000). Another high-risk group is those over 60 years of age (mean: 21.40/100,000), especially males (mean: 31.17/100,000) than females (mean: 11.63/100,000). The period effect of the APC model suggests that HBV vaccination is effective in reducing the incidence of HBV in the population. Conclusions: The incidence of HBV in Jiangsu Province showed a gradual downward trend, but the disease burden in males was higher than that in females. The incidence is higher and increasing rapidly in the population between the ages of 15 and 30 years and people over 60 years of age. Remote sensing technologies are frequently employed in monitoring and evaluating agricultural meteorological disasters because they can provide high throughput and cost-effective accesses to obtain a variety of real-time spatial data related to crop growth information. Accurately and timely estimating the drought dynamics using remote sensing is valuable for improving crop management level and promoting agricultural sustainable development. In this study, the responses of winter wheat during the critical growth stages to different drought levels from 2010 to 2020 in the Huang-Huai-Hai (HHH) region of China were evaluated based on Google Earth Engine. Four critical developmental stages of winter wheat were highlighted: greening－jointing, jointing－heading, heading－milking maturity, and milking maturity－maturity stages. The temperature vegetation dryness index (TVDI) was constructed for evaluating the drought of winter wheat. Our results indicated that the winter wheat in the HHH region during 2010－2020 was clearly impacted by drought disasters, mainly mild to moderate droughts. In particular, the TVDI index during the critical development stages of winter wheat from 2010 to 2020 wavered in the scope of 0.48 and 0.61, and the soil moisture content at a depth of 10 cm tended to obviously reducing with a rate of − 0.1615/a. For critical growth stages, the winter wheat in the HHH Region was the most prone to threatened by drought during the stage of jointing－heading, following the stage of milking maturity－maturity. The high probability incidence of drought in winter wheat gradually shifted from the nutritional growth to the reproductive growth stages, which increased the risk of drought affecting yield. Furthermore, the notable spatial variations of drought in winter wheat in the HHH region were found. The winter wheat was evidently threatened by moderate and severe droughts in certain areas such as southern Hebei province, northern Jiangsu province, Anhui province, etc. Our results provide new insights into the studies on monitoring and evaluating agricultural meteorological disasters based on remote sensing technology. Aims: The bivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (bOPV; Sabin types 1 and 3) replaced the trivalent OPV (Sabin types 1, 2 and 3) globally in April 2016. A routine schedule of 1 dose of inactivated poliovirus vaccine and 3 subsequent doses of bOPV was implemented in Jiangsu simultaneously. The schedule was changed to 2 inactivated poliovirus vaccines + 2 bOPV on 1 September 2019. Although OPV type 2 has been removed, challenges persist because of adverse events following immunization (AEFIs) with bOPV. Therefore, we analysed and evaluated the safety profile of bOPV administered in children based on passive postmarketing AEFI surveillance. Methods: We collected all bOPV‐related AEFI reports in Jiangsu from the Chinese National AEFI Information System (CNAEFIS) between May 2016 and April 2020. We obtained the administered doses of bOPV from the Jiangsu Provincial Electronic Immunization Registries System. A descriptive analysis was performed. Results: In total, 2084 bOPV‐related AEFIs were retrieved from the CNAEFIS. The overall reporting rate was 24.16 per 100 000 doses. Most AEFIs were nonserious. The most frequently reported symptoms were fever, rash and gastrointestinal disorders. Only 1.34% of AEFIs were serious, which thrombocytopenic purpura accounted for the largest category. Seventeen serious adverse events, including 2 vaccine‐associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP) cases, were considered to be related to bOPV vaccination. The rate of VAPP was 0.2 per million doses. Conclusion: AEFI analysis showed that bOPV was well tolerated. The events most frequently reported were nonserious. However, bOPV can still cause VAPP. • We study the impact of supplementary immunization activities (SIAs) on the measles transmission dynamics and its implications for measles elimination goals in China. • The model takes into account population demographics, age-specific contact patterns, seasonality, routine vaccination, SIAs, and the waning vaccine-induced immunity. • SIAs have greatly reduced the measles incidence and the fraction of susceptibles, but the benefit may wane over time. Additional SIAs may accelerate the measles elimination. • The outbreak risk may be greater than 70% once the monthly imported measles cases exceed ten. Measles has re-emerged globally due to the accumulation of susceptible individuals and immunity gap, which causes challenges in eliminating measles. Routine vaccination and supplementary immunization activities (SIAs) have greatly improved measles control, but the impact of SIAs on the measles transmission dynamics remains unclear as the vaccine-induced immunity wanes. We developed a comprehensive measles transmission dynamics model by taking into account population demographics, age-specific contact patterns, seasonality, routine vaccination, SIAs, and the waning vaccine-induced immunity. The model was calibrated by the monthly age-specific cases data from 2005 to 2018 in Jiangsu Province, China, and validated by the dynamic sero-prevalence data. We aimed to investigate the short-term and long-term impact of three-time SIAs during 2009–2012 (9.68 million and 4.25 million children aged 8 months-14 years in March 2009 and September 2010, respectively, and 140,000 children aged 8 months-6 years in March 2012) on the measles disease burden and explored whether additional SIAs could accelerate the measles elimination. We estimated that the cumulative numbers of measles cases from March 2009 to December 2012 (in the short run) and to December 2018 (in the long run) after three-time SIAs (base case) were 6,699 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2,928–10,469), and 22,411 (15,146–29,675), which averted 45.0% (42.9%-47.0%) and 34.3% (30.7%-37.9%) of 12,226 (4,916–19,537) and 34,274 (21,350–47,199) cases without SIAs, respectively. The fraction of susceptibles for children aged 8–23 months and 2–14 years decreased from 8.3% and 10.8% in March 2009 to 5.8% and 5.8% in April 2012, respectively. However, the fraction of susceptibles aged 15–49 years and above 50 years increased gradually to about 15% in 2018 irrespective of SIAs due to the waning immunity. The measles elimination goal would be reached in 2028, and administrating additional one-off SIAs in September 2022 to children aged 8–23 months, or young adolescents aged 15–19 years could accelerate the elimination one year earlier. SIAs have greatly reduced the measles incidence and the fraction of susceptibles, but the benefit may wane over time. Background: Changes in the epidemiological characteristics of measles since 2007 appeared in the Jiangsu province. Although the reported coverage with two doses of measles vaccine was greater than 95% in most regions of the province, measles incidence remained high across the whole province. Cross-sectional serological surveys of measles antibodies in the Jiangsu province of China were conducted from 2008 to 2010 to assess and track population immunity. Methods: Measles-specific IgG levels were measured in serum samples using ELISA. GMTs and seroprevalence with 95% CIs were calculated by region, gender, and age. ANOVA and χ2 tests were used to test for statistically significant differences between groups for GMT levels and seroprevalence, respectively. Results: Seroprevalence showed a significantly increasing trend annually (CMH χ2 = 40.32, p<0.0001). Although the seroprevalence among children aged 2–15 years was consistently over 95%, vaccine-induced measles antibodies may wane over time. Measles seropositivity in the Jiangsu province was 91.7% (95% CI: 90.1–93.2%) in 2010. Among adults aged 15 to 29-year-olds, the seropositivity rate was 88.4% (95% CI: 82.7–92.8%). Conclusions: Vaccination strategies may need to be adjusted depending on the individual age and regions, particularly individuals between the ages of 8 months-14 years old and 20–29 years old. • Comparison between straw-biochar and straw under an equal C input. • CO 2 from soil heterotrophic respiration was included in GHG emissions. • Straw return increased CO 2 and CH 4 but suppressed N 2 O emissions. • Straw-biochar suppressed emissions of CO 2 , CH 4 and N 2 O simultaneously. • Straw-biochar reduced GHGI by reducing GWP and enhancing cotton yield. Recycling crop straw to cropland can improve soil fertility, increase crop yield, and enhance soil carbon (C) sequestration, but also increase the risk of soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, the differences in GHG emissions among different straw management methods are not well understood. Here, we investigated the responses of GHG emissions and their driving factors to the application of straw (S, 5.0 t ha−1), straw plus microbial inoculant (SI, 5.0 t ha−1), straw mulching (SM, 5.0 t ha−1), straw-biochar (SB, 3.5 t ha−1), and no straw or straw-biochar (CK) based on an equal amount of C input in a cotton field in Yancheng city, Jiangsu province, China from 2017 to 2018. Our results showed that the carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions from soil heterotrophic respiration were decreased markedly under SB, but increased markedly under SI and S. The response of soil methane (CH 4) emissions to all treatments was similar to the CO 2 emissions. Soil nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions were consistently decreased under SB, SI, S and SM, ranking as CK > SM > S>SI > SB. Compared with CK, SI and S significantly increased the global warming potential (GWP), whereas SB significantly decreased GWP by 17.9 %–19.8 %. Lint yield of cotton was highest in SB, followed by SI, S and SM, and lowest in CK. Consequently, SI, S and SM had no significant effects on the greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI), but SB significantly decreased GHGI by 28.4 %–35.7 %. Background: In recent years, outbreaks of varicella have continued to occur, and the coverage rate of varicella vaccine in Jiangsu Province, China, remains unclear. This study aims to analyse the levels of immune antibody against varicella and obtain a comprehensive understanding of the varicella attenuated live vaccine (VarV) coverage rate in children aged 1-9 years in Jiangsu Province.Methods: From June to October 2016, a cross-sectional survey was conducted to collect 3631 serum samples from healthy children aged 1-9 years in Jiangsu Province. The immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody levels of varicella were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).Results: The VarV coverage rate of healthy children was only 43.1% (95% CI: 41.1-44.7%). The seroprevalence after vaccination with a single dose of VarV was only 57.1%, and the overall seropositivity and geometric antibody titre (GMC) were 43.5% and 225.4 mU/ml, respectively. The seropositivity was significantly higher in girls than in boys (χ2 = 18.82, P < 0.001). The difference in seropositivity between the 5-9 age group and 1-4 age group was statistically significant (χ2 = 84.31, P < 0.001). The difference in seropositivity between different regions was statistically significant, with the highest seropositivity in the northern area, 53.7% (χ2 = 35.64, P < 0.001). The seropositivity in the group receiving one dose of VarV was significantly higher than that of the unvaccinated group (χ2 = 205.16, P < 0.001). Linear regression analysis suggested that the GMC of varicella antibodies wanes with the time since vaccination (F = 65.01, P = 0.002).Conclusion: The VarV coverage rate of healthy children in Jiangsu Province was low. Sero-conversion rates were also low after one dose of VarV, and the immune effectiveness of a single dose of VarV was limited. To control the spread of varicella, VarV should be included in the routine immunization program, and strengthened immunization measures for the varicella-susceptible population warrant additional consideration.
